- 0:22SPEAKER_00: In this week's shorter episodes, we're talking about a few ways to start writing today.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: A great way to do this is by writing articles.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Now, yesterday on the podcast, I talked about writing blog posts, and articles are similar to blog posts, except that they're posted on other places beside your own website.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And you can write for magazines, journals, newsletters, newspapers, or even other blogs or websites.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: You can also post these articles on social media such as Facebook or LinkedIn.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: The possibilities really are endless as to what you can do with these blog posts or articles.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Now the big question everybody wrestles with is where do I start with writing for other places?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: It's really easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options, so let me present to you two of the simplest ones.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The first option is writing articles for other bloggers.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And this is a super easy win.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So if you know somebody who writes about the same topics that you do, ask if they might be willing to do an article swap.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: You write an article for their site, they write an article for your site, you benefit, they benefit, and both of your audiences benefit by having a different point of view on the same topic.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And so it's kind of a win all the way around.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I remember a few years ago when several other bloggers and myself did a series on leadership in the movies, and we did guest appearances on each other's blogs.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It was really, really fun.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And it was almost like, you know, back in the 80s and 90s, and maybe they still do this in comic books today, I don't know.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But back when I was a kid and reading comic books, sometimes they would have a storyline that went from, you know, it was Detective Comics number 411.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And at the end of that, that issue, they would say, this story is continued in, you know, Batman number 286.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And you would jump from series to series, but it would be the same storyline and in the same continuance.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And I think that's really, really fun.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I remember doing that and it was a blast.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: And maybe I'll do something down on the podcast, maybe like a podcast swap or a podcast series where it's on writing, but we're kind of continuing the same themes.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: That might be actually kind of fun.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: But anyway, that's something that you can do that's really, really fun.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It's super simple.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So find one or two other people who write about the same things you do and do a blog swap or do an article swap.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Now, the second really simple way to start writing for other places is to submit an article to a site where you can get accepted fairly easily.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I recommend submitting an article to the Goodmen Project.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: The Goodman Project is a large media site with several million visitors per month.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And I used to be a lead editor there as well as a writer.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: They're always looking for new writers, and writing for GMP is a great way to hone your writing skills and build your audience at the same time.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: For example, one time I wrote an article on the Goodman Project about the singer Tony Bennett, and his manager saw it and emailed me saying that Tony Bennett loved the article.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've never heard of Tony Bennett, first of all, I'm shocked.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Second of all, Tony is a world-famous singer and he's been making music literally for many, many decades.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: He's in his 90s now, and he's a huge, huge deal in the music world, particularly in the vocal jazz world.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Tony is an amazing guy, super, super inspirational, makes fantastic music.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And I was honestly really, really shocked that I literally got an email from his manager saying, hey, Tony read this article and he really liked it.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: So the point here is that you never know what might happen when you put your writing out there on places other than your own blog or website.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: You never know what's going to happen when you take a risk and you write for other outlets besides the place that you own.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So I really want to encourage you to think about this.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Start writing for other places.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And the two easiest ways, once again, are other blogs by people that you know and other websites, such as the Goodman Project.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I would recommend starting there.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: It's a fairly easy place to get into.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and there are a huge, huge site, and it's just really, really good people over there.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So here's today's question.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If you had to write an article today for a place other than your own website or blog, where would it be?
