- 0:07Welcome back to the Simply Christ podcast hosted by Leon
- 0:11Martin, along with Aaron Keaton, Melvin Martin, Andrew Schrock
- 0:14and Dan Blatz. Let's get right to it.
- 0:19All righty, we are back at it tonight with the Simply Christ
- 0:24Bible Study webinar. Thank you for joining us.
- 0:28We look forward to keep it on going here in first Corinthians
- 0:32chapter 12 regarding the gifts of the Spirit or diversities of
- 0:37the Spirit. We ended at verse 11 last week
- 0:41and we're going to continue through this chapter because I
- 0:45think it's it kind of completes the the whole thing here for us.
- 0:48So before we do that, though, let's open up with the word of
- 0:53prayer. Melvin, if you.
- 0:55Let you know. Sure, let's pray.
- 0:57Father, we come to you tonight and we just praise you and we
- 1:00honor you for this time together.
- 1:02Father, that we can open up your word and and we can just read
- 1:09your word and study your word. Father, I just pray that the
- 1:12Spirit would guide us tonight, that we can read the word and
- 1:17interpret the word as you intended to.
- 1:20And Father, I just pray that people could hearts could be
- 1:24softened and their ears and eyes could be opened and to be able
- 1:29to see you most of all in a much clearer way and, and that they
- 1:37could see the word and have a hunger for the word.
- 1:39Father, I just pray that we all could have a hunger for the word
- 1:43and because your word is light and it is our guide and, and
- 1:49it's it's our map for for this life here on this earth.
- 1:53And so Father, we just praise you and we thank you for
- 1:56redeeming us by sending your son Jesus to die on the cross for
- 2:00our sins. And we just honor you and
- 2:02glorify you and we love you in Jesus name, Amen.
- 2:05Amen. That's right, Dan, I'll let you
- 2:10kind of take verse 12 then right off the bat.
- 2:12But so last week we talked kind of a lot about the different
- 2:18rips and what they do in our experience with them.
- 2:20Maybe we weren't all alone, I guess was damn missing.
- 2:25Maybe I can't remember. I was, yeah.
- 2:27Yeah. So we just, we just talked about
- 2:29the different ones, what our experiences were with some of
- 2:31them and whatever. But I, I do remember one of the
- 2:34things that really kind of stuck out to me regarding that was
- 2:39that verse 7 where it says, but the manifestation of the spirit
- 2:42is given to every man to profit with all.
- 2:45So there we have a really clear indicator of what this is for.
- 2:52You know, it's not for a spiritual high.
- 2:54It's not to make you feel closer to God, you know, necessarily,
- 2:57or make you like seem like a certain milestone or whatever,
- 3:02but rather it's profitable. It's something that adds value
- 3:06to what already been. So I just I just wanted to recap
- 3:11with that because I think that's actually a pretty pivotal where
- 3:15where a lot of us kind of run a buck in this in this gifts of
- 3:20the spirit thing. The tendency to go off into some
- 3:26kind of spiritual spaces is large in this area.
- 3:31So anyway, so verse 12 says, and he's kind of coming back now to
- 3:37the body of Christ and you're going to you're going to see
- 3:39that for the next well, I don't know, 10 or 15 verses about he's
- 3:45going to be talking about how that these are divert and how
- 3:50they're distributed and stuff. So we ended up with verse 11
- 3:54last week, but says, but all these worketh that wanted self
- 3:57saved spirit dividing to every man severally as he will, And
- 4:01maybe we could actually start by just a little bit.
- 4:03Me and my wife were talking about these gifts.
- 4:08It looks according to that verse 11.
- 4:10I could be wrong, but it looks to me like that is saying that,
- 4:14you know, one person would would maybe one time have a gift of
- 4:18healing where he could be able to, you know, heal somebody.
- 4:22But another time he might have a word of wisdom like in other
- 4:26words, a person doesn't acquire one gift, and that's the only
- 4:29gift that he practices all his life flow.
- 4:32But it's divided several. So it's divided amongst us as we
- 4:36go. And then he goes into
- 4:37activation. 12 For as the body is 1 and hath many members, and
- 4:42all the members of that one body being many are one body, so also
- 4:46is Christ. So Daniel, thoughts on that?
- 4:51Yeah, I have definitely considered that.
- 4:52I mean, first of all, you see the Apostle Paul with many of
- 4:55these gifts at different times, different places.
- 4:58Suddenly he's preaching with the gift of teaching perhaps, and
- 5:02prophecy. And then he discovers there that
- 5:04there's somebody sick and then he can heal them suddenly,
- 5:07right? Like it's that these gifts seem
- 5:09to have come and gone at different times, right.
- 5:11So I I think there is definitely a room for that kind of view of
- 5:14this where God divides severally as you will like just suddenly
- 5:18you might have a certain type of gift at any one time.
- 5:22Later on as we get to some of the other portions about
- 5:25teachers healing governments helps.
- 5:29It does seem to almost tie closer together with your
- 5:33personal character and sometimes natural abilities that seem to
- 5:37have been translated to some kind of spiritual ability now as
- 5:41well, right? You have a the ability to
- 5:43communicate clearly sometimes then you're naturally gifted
- 5:46with that spiritual gift of teaching, right?
- 5:48It's almost like a, a natural gift becomes a supernatural.
- 5:52But I don't think that's necessarily what he's talking
- 5:53about in many of these cases like the healings and and
- 5:56tongues and whatever else, right?
- 5:59So in verse 12 the one that you just read for as the body is 1
- 6:04or did you not read it? Yes, I did.
- 6:06You did OK and hath many members.
- 6:09All the members of that one body, being many are one body.
- 6:12So also is Christ. And then I for me, I always have
- 6:15to read verse 13 together with it.
- 6:17I will try not to get into it too much, but it says that by
- 6:20one Spirit we're all baptized into one body.
- 6:23So he's kind of delivering the gospel to us here while he's
- 6:27trying to show the Corinthians how they ought to view gifts.
- 6:31You all were scattered individual people.
- 6:33You were all different members of something.
- 6:36You were taken by 1 Spirit and all of you at different,
- 6:39seemingly different times. But really, it all happened 2000
- 6:42years ago, or in that case, 60 or 80 years ago, whatever it
- 6:46might have been, you were all at the same time baptized into one
- 6:49body. Didn't matter if you were Jew or
- 6:52Gentile, if you were a bond man or a free man.
- 6:54All of us have been made to drink into one spirit.
- 6:57And it's a gift to all of us, like from the moment we become a
- 7:00believer and are baptized spiritually into Christ's body,
- 7:05we become members of His body. Therefore, the gifts are not to
- 7:09give you any kind of glory. The gift is not to draw
- 7:12attention to yourself. The gift is for the functioning
- 7:15of the body. It's it's meant and designed so
- 7:18that all the body will be benefited by whatever gifting he
- 7:22has bestowed upon you, whether it's an individual gift at one
- 7:26point in time or if it's a gift of ministry that you are able to
- 7:30work regularly. But just like Christ's body was
- 7:341 when it was crucified, now we even though we look like many
- 7:38different people, we're actually not.
- 7:40We actually are functioning together as one unit, and this
- 7:43is not something we're trying to become.
- 7:46We're not trying to become one body.
- 7:48You know, a lot of people try to hone in their doctrine and try
- 7:51to force everybody into a certain way of thinking, a
- 7:54certain way of external appearance is a certain way of
- 7:57praying or whatever it might be until we all look like one.
- 8:00That's uniformity. This unity that we're talking
- 8:02about here that has already taken place is something God has
- 8:06done and now we're trying to walk according to what He's
- 8:09already done. We were all different
- 8:11individuals. Now we are one, just like
- 8:14Christ's body was one. We are currently one and now we
- 8:18need to live out from that. Not trying to separate and say,
- 8:22well, I'm the I'm, I'm an ear. Well, I'm this, I'm that.
- 8:25No, we're all one thing, right? So I'm not sure if I'm
- 8:29clarifying, but to me it's a very beautiful truth to know
- 8:32this is done. This is something that we
- 8:34already are. Yeah, no, that's, that's
- 8:37beautiful. I love that.
- 8:38That's that's a good. And I agree I should have read
- 8:4013 right away. But your thoughts on 12 and or
- 8:4413? But I mean, I'll read 13 then
- 8:45too, Melvin. Yeah, I think it's interesting.
- 8:50One of the things that I've seen in here kind of the pattern, you
- 8:54know, as we were going through the gifts of the Spirit and now
- 8:57as he's going into the body, there's this there's this
- 9:02oneness like there's this, there's this one focus which is
- 9:09Christ right, and the Spirit and God, but it also carries into
- 9:14the body. But I want to start by saying
- 9:17this in verse 11. It is interesting.
- 9:19He says dividing to every man severally as he will.
- 9:23And the I think the key there is, is that he divides it to
- 9:27every man as he will, as God's will, right?
- 9:31It So many times we want to try and make it happen, right?
- 9:37And I'm not saying we shouldn't. Maybe sometimes it is OK to
- 9:42like, how would you say covet a gift or, or, you know, a gift of
- 9:46healing or something. But it, it sounds to me like God
- 9:51will make that gift, give that gift.
- 9:55So, but it's not make it, but give it to you as he will and as
- 9:59he sees fit. And obviously it is in the
- 10:04context of the body. And if oneness, it's not like
- 10:08you were saying, Dan, like it's a it's not where it's to elevate
- 10:12one man higher than the other or one person higher or even
- 10:16another woman or whatever it is in the body.
- 10:18It's not to be elevated to different levels, but we're to
- 10:23be 1 and unity in Christ, not unity as far as looking the same
- 10:30and and thinking the same and all that.
- 10:32But it's Christ already has that.
- 10:36That is Christ, that is who he is because it says there, you
- 10:42know, in verse 12, whereas the body is 1 and had many members
- 10:45and all the members of that one body being many are one body.
- 10:48So also is Christ. So Christ is 1 and so we are one
- 10:54in him, right? And that's just so beautiful
- 10:58when we can, like you were saying, damn.
- 11:00And we can operate like that. That's a beautiful truth,
- 11:04actually, that will set you free.
- 11:05I'm telling you that's that's good.
- 11:09I'm loving this, Aaron. Go ahead.
- 11:12Yeah, I'll just say just kind of more of a general comment, but I
- 11:17do think this is a this would be kind of the starting point in
- 11:21which he is addressing the fact that there's a there's a
- 11:25temptation in people to either feel like they don't contribute
- 11:32or feel like it's all about them.
- 11:35You know what I mean? Like he's going to go on to say
- 11:37the foot, can't say the hand or so on and so forth.
- 11:41And, you know, and I think that when he says that, that is what
- 11:44he's addressed. And he's addressed one saying,
- 11:46well, I'm not the eye, so I must not be worth anything.
- 11:49And the other says, well, I actually don't need anybody else
- 11:51because I run the show, you know, So I think that that's, I
- 11:56think the beginning of this is the fact that he's started out
- 11:58by saying you're 1 body. I think he started out by, in
- 12:03other words, in the beginning, the 1st 11 verses, I think he's
- 12:05kind of addressing the fact that if somebody, it does have a
- 12:08gift, it's given by the same Lord, it's ministered by the
- 12:12same spirit that, you know, as long as they're blessing Christ
- 12:17and not cursing Christ, it's the same God that's working in this.
- 12:20And then he's going to go on from here and address the fact
- 12:23that you shouldn't be lifted up higher than anybody else, nor
- 12:26should you feel like you're useless.
- 12:28Because the thing that we don't put much emphasis on is actually
- 12:32more important often times. So I think this is like, that's
- 12:35just general, but I think this is the start of that.
- 12:39Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:40Good stuff, Andrew. Yeah, I I agree with everything
- 12:44that was said. And I'll add a a little
- 12:46different angle. Remember in the beginning of
- 12:48this chapter he's talking about there are so many divisions
- 12:51among them. Some were saying I'm of Paul and
- 12:55I'm of Apollos. You know, there's always like,
- 12:57who are we following? News almost getting fed up with
- 13:01it where he's like, I wish you really wouldn't know anything
- 13:04except Christ and him crucify. It sounds like you didn't even
- 13:07carefully knew about the miracles or the gifts and stuff.
- 13:10He's like, I just want you to know that you're Christ and him
- 13:13crucified and that crucifixion is what brought in this oneness
- 13:19that made that is what made us all one Christ.
- 13:22And with that oneness comes these gifts.
- 13:26Then it's good for us to hear and to know that when you hear
- 13:31of a believer somewhere that is has a certain gift, like an
- 13:34outstanding gift of healing, I want to be a part of that.
- 13:38Like I if I'm sick, I want to get healed.
- 13:40I'm not going to be opposed and say, well, that's what they do
- 13:43over there. No, he's of the same spirit,
- 13:46right? Like if it's through the name of
- 13:48Jesus Christ and he's operating from as a believer, you know,
- 13:53that's from the same Spirit according to this passage, is
- 13:56all of 1 spirit these gifts are a part of and I want to benefit
- 14:00from it. I want to benefit from every
- 14:01gift. I don't want to be standoffish
- 14:03about these gifts. I just hate how it's been
- 14:07misused and abused and lied about.
- 14:10And a lot of the gifts that people are practicing, it's not
- 14:15the way that Paul did. Paul and Peter, when they were
- 14:17walking, they could just walk up to a person by themselves, no
- 14:21music, no drums, no sound backs, no smooth, nothing.
- 14:25And they could just grab his hand, say in the name of Jesus
- 14:28Christ, rise up and walk. The power of the Holy Ghost
- 14:32within them, within. It wasn't something that they
- 14:35had to do without. All the stuff that has to do
- 14:38without, I think is no different than Indians dancing around
- 14:41until spirits move. They can get supernatural
- 14:43activities going. That's not what this is.
- 14:47And but if I find somebody that has that gift, there's humble
- 14:51that is not out like they can just out on the street get
- 14:54people genuinely healed. There's no tricks.
- 14:57I'm not opposed to it. That's my brother.
- 14:59That's part of part of the body of Christ.
- 15:02And he's one with me and that's his gift and that got my gift.
- 15:06So he's not greater and I'm not less and I'm not more not he's
- 15:11not less like we're all one and this body.
- 15:14So I, I felt like last time we were kind of sounding like we're
- 15:19all just against these gifts. I'm not, I, I want to embrace
- 15:23everything that Christ has to offer for us.
- 15:26I want to live in every power that is available to us.
- 15:29I want to magnify and glorify his name with whatever tools he
- 15:33has given us to do it. And I just want to say that what
- 15:37I am against is the false using stuff that actually disables the
- 15:43gifts to work. You know, it actually, like we
- 15:47were saying last time, it breeds unbelief instead of faith.
- 15:51Yeah, and really, it's not profitable for anybody.
- 15:56It's. Confusing and destructive in the
- 15:58long run, even if it looks right in the start.
- 16:00So yeah, for a little context where you use those of you
- 16:04listening, I said that we would kind of breeze through the next
- 16:0815 or so verses and end up we want to really actually talk
- 16:11about verse 282930 and 31. Here's 15 minutes, one of the
- 16:15first verse. But anyway, good stuff.
- 16:21Yeah, that's I like that. And thinking about baptism here,
- 16:25verse 13 for by 1 Spirit, we are all baptized into one body,
- 16:29whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be free and have all
- 16:34been made to drink into one spirit.
- 16:37And I'll let Melvin go on on this.
- 16:41Dan already commented on it a little bit, but he disappeared.
- 16:44So not sure if there is crack, but Mel, you can go ahead on
- 16:48this. I like that picture.
- 16:50We started this the the subjects kind of one of our subjects that
- 16:53we had went went over the last month or two months ago,
- 16:58whenever it was was baptism and just a beautiful, beautiful
- 17:02picture here in verse 13. Yeah, and I don't have a whole
- 17:08lot on this. It's just like clarifying to me,
- 17:11like what we were talking about being baptized into Christ.
- 17:15When you, you know, believe on Jesus and confess Jesus with
- 17:20your mouth and believe on him with your whole heart, then you
- 17:23are baptized into Christ. And then because of that, you
- 17:28are baptized into one body. That's what it says here.
- 17:31One body meaning the body of Christ, like the church.
- 17:35And whether they be Jew or Gentiles, bond or free, it
- 17:38doesn't matter. Who you are?
- 17:41Or what you, your ethnic, it doesn't matter, you know, what
- 17:47your background is or where you come from or if you're grew up
- 17:50in the city or it, it you're 1 body, you're automatically
- 17:54become one. And I think this is really
- 17:57important about the body of Christ, but also about the
- 18:04spirit and the gifts of the spirit.
- 18:05Because, you know, it's so freeing to me when we can be
- 18:11part of 1 body in Christ and not, not this, you know,
- 18:17denominations and all this, this stuff, you know, and preferences
- 18:21and, and whatever, but one body because of Christ and we and we
- 18:26are one spirit because of the Holy Spirit.
- 18:31And then those gifts come, like you were saying, Andrew, because
- 18:36of that is not something that we're trying to get the gifts to
- 18:41be part of the body or to be part of Christ.
- 18:45But we first are baptized into Christ and into one body, and
- 18:50then the gifts come for the edification of the body, and for
- 18:54the Fathering of the Kingdom and for his glory.
- 18:57Yeah, that's, that's good. And and a verse like this would
- 19:00have been absolute. This would have been astonishing
- 19:05action to the Gentiles at one point, because they were
- 19:08convinced by the Jews that God was kind of for them.
- 19:11The Gentiles were kind of out of luck, you know, in a lot of
- 19:14ways. And here he's saying that Jews
- 19:16or Gentiles bond or free, you know, air your thoughts on that
- 19:19verse. I'm just going to focus on the
- 19:22last part of that verse where he says that we've all been made to
- 19:26drink into one spirit. And, and I think that he's
- 19:28pointing to the fact that whatever your, whatever gift it
- 19:33is, whether it is as simple as a word of knowledge or whether it
- 19:37is as as amazing as healing, we're drinking, we're partaking
- 19:44of that one spirit that's coming by the one spirit.
- 19:48And this, this little story came to my mind actually just now.
- 19:52It's an example of not drinking of that one spirit actually is
- 19:56Acts chapter 19. It's in verse 11, it talks about
- 20:00Paul doing all these great miracles where he just sends a a
- 20:04handkerchief or an apron to people and they were healed.
- 20:07And based on those great things it inspired other people.
- 20:11Verse 13 says this is Acts 1913 says been certain of the
- 20:15Vagabond Jews exorcist took upon them to call over them which had
- 20:21evil spirits. The name of the Lord Jesus
- 20:23saying we adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches, right that I
- 20:28mean, like in their very in their very calling, they were
- 20:32they're kind of admitting they're not drinking of that
- 20:34spirit. They're just trying to do it by
- 20:35somebody else's drinking. You know what I mean?
- 20:38So it says we adjure thee by whom Paul preaches.
- 20:41And there were seven sons of 1 Skiva, a Jew chief.
- 20:44Of the priest. Which did so and the evil spirit
- 20:48answered and said, Jesus, I know and Paul I know, but who are ye?
- 20:54And the man in whom those evil spirit was leaked on them and
- 20:57overcame them and prevailed against them so that they fled
- 21:00out of the house naked and wounded.
- 21:03So they, I think that's an example of trying to use a gift,
- 21:08but not drinking of the spirit. You know what I mean?
- 21:11Like they were not they had not they were not drinking of that
- 21:14same spirit because they were just trying to use.
- 21:18I mean, think about the way they said it.
- 21:19We adjure thee by the by Jesus whom Paul preaches not not that
- 21:23we're a partaker of, but this guy that Paul's preaching.
- 21:26And I just, I like to say that I hope you see the connection
- 21:28there. It was, oh, that was a story.
- 21:31Yeah. No, that's a good.
- 21:32That's a good point. I like that, Andrew.
- 21:35Yeah, in that case they they missed the baptism part.
- 21:38Yeah, that's right. They have to 1st get baptized
- 21:41into Christ. I'm just going to do a real
- 21:44short 1 here. It's good news to the world.
- 21:49Doesn't matter where you come from.
- 21:51Doesn't matter if you're a little Schwarzentruber or Amish
- 21:54kid that has no education or, you know, there's a lot of
- 22:00people that feel like they don't matter, that basically they feel
- 22:05forsaken, that God doesn't care. Nobody likes me.
- 22:09A lot of people committing suicide these days.
- 22:14But this verse should give you hope, bond free, study.
- 22:18Whatever you are, whoever you are, you can be made one with
- 22:21the family of God, the King of kings, the Lord of Lords, reign
- 22:26with Christ by just simply believing and putting your faith
- 22:31and trust in Jesus Christ and you'll be one that makes you one
- 22:35that that baptism, spiritual baptism makes you one with the
- 22:38Almighty God. It does not matter where you
- 22:41come from though. The only reason you're sad is
- 22:45because you don't know this and you're not believing it.
- 22:48Some people hear this and they know it, but they still choose
- 22:53sadness. And at that, God did the work.
- 22:56He did the dying. He did the raising from the
- 22:58dead. He brought the victory, and it's
- 23:00up to you to receive it. It's no longer God's fault if
- 23:03you're in misery. That's a fact.
- 23:06That's good stuff, Dad. Any additional comments on 13?
- 23:11Mostly just a little bit of a reiteration of what you guys
- 23:13have all been saying already, Aaron, Andrew already kind of
- 23:16pointed this out that if you go to the very beginning of this
- 23:18book, he's dealing with a very similar thing.
- 23:22In some ways, this passage here in our First Corinthians 12/12
- 23:27and 13 could kind of be the crux of the book in a sense, because
- 23:30at the beginning he said they were splitting over who's Paul,
- 23:33who's Paul, who's Cephas. And he said that's, that's not
- 23:36the goal. We are all one in Christ.
- 23:39And then in in there's a few other places where you could
- 23:41point to different things that were very similar to this.
- 23:44But in chapter 8, he's talking about eating meat offered to
- 23:47idols. And he says, we know that some
- 23:49have knowledge, but knowledge that puffs up is not a good kind
- 23:52of knowledge. You should be considerate of
- 23:54your brother. And then, and we talked about
- 23:56this in First Corinthians 11, how they were having communion
- 24:00apart from each other, not considering the Lord's body, not
- 24:03waiting for one another. So it was this constant division
- 24:07in the Church of I'm more important, I'm richer, I'm more
- 24:11wealthy, or I'm nothing, I'm not good enough, I'm too poor.
- 24:14And he's just making them all equal in Christ.
- 24:17And the gifts are the same thing.
- 24:20Like all of these things that the Corinthians were involved
- 24:22with, whether it was eating meat offered to idols or whether it
- 24:25was who their favorite preacher was or what their favorite gift
- 24:28was, he was all always dividing them.
- 24:30And here he brings them all under this one umbrella and says
- 24:33you are all one. That like from the moment you
- 24:36were conceived in the gospel through the Paul's preaching,
- 24:40you became one with one another. Not only one with God through
- 24:44Christ, but one with each other. We are all one body.
- 24:47There's no difference between each other.
- 24:49We have different gifts, but it's all for this one self
- 24:53saying purpose and it's the same spirit in all of us.
- 24:55So he's he's obviously going to keep reiterating that throughout
- 24:58this passage here, but it's it's a neat to see that theme
- 25:01throughout the whole book. Yeah, that's right.
- 25:05And, and I like, well, I'll read a couple of verses here because
- 25:09he makes a couple different points, but he's talking, he's
- 25:11making the same point with the different illustrations here.
- 25:15For the body is not one member, but many.
- 25:19If the foot shall say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the
- 25:22body, is there therefore, is it therefore not of the body?
- 25:27Well, the answer obviously is, of course it is.
- 25:30And if the ear shall say, because I am not the eye, I am
- 25:33not of the body, or is it therefore not of the body?
- 25:38If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing?
- 25:42If the whole were hearing, where were the spelling now?
- 25:47But now hath God set the members, every one of them in
- 25:51his body as it hath pleased him. And this is where this go, and
- 25:56I'll let you go on this. Erm, but back to dividing to
- 26:00every man severally as he will. You know, it says, and I find
- 26:04this interesting. And maybe this is kind of
- 26:07opposing what I said about, you know, one person having it once,
- 26:11you know, but or having multiple gifts.
- 26:13I don't know, because here it says and he makes the point that
- 26:17is that's God set the members, every one of them in the body.
- 26:22And I know that my spleen can't be my colon ever.
- 26:27You know, if you if you look at it that way, then then that's my
- 26:31spleen is going to be a spleen for as long as it's alive,
- 26:34right. Anyway, your thoughts on on that
- 26:37verse 18 of the previous ones here?
- 26:41I think there's two different things that he's going to do.
- 26:43And I think this this first section is the case in which one
- 26:48member looks at the other and says I can't do what they do, so
- 26:52I must not be part of the body. But he's going to change that in
- 26:55a minute and say that the one looks at the others that are not
- 26:59doing what he's doing and saying they're not the body because
- 27:01they're not or I don't need them because they're not as relevant
- 27:04as I am. So I think this first part is
- 27:06just a because that's what he says.
- 27:08It's the foot looking and saying, well I'm not the hand.
- 27:12I can't. I can't do what the hand does,
- 27:14so I must not be. Part of the body.
- 27:16And and I think he's pointing out that I really like the verse
- 27:20there. Well, I don't know if you read
- 27:2419, but I like 18 and 19 together when he says, but now
- 27:28as God set the members, every one of them in the body as it
- 27:31pleased him. And if they were all one member,
- 27:36where were the body? And I don't know if you read
- 27:38that verse. I don't think you read 19, but I
- 27:40think that's really relevant. He's the point is not to look
- 27:45around and say I can't do what the other persons do.
- 27:49The point is to look and say, what gift can I use for the
- 27:55glory of Christ for the benefit of the rest of the body?
- 27:59Like what can I do to to profit with all right, I mean, that's
- 28:03what we said back there in verse 7.
- 28:06What can I do to profit everybody else?
- 28:09Because I mean, we don't we don't look at it.
- 28:13That were was it in this list when he when he used mercy?
- 28:16Or is that the another list of another book?
- 28:18I can't remember if he I know this one had faith, but I don't
- 28:22know another list listed as mercy being one of them.
- 28:26And I think it's so it's so overlooked that if you was to be
- 28:31a kind of the kind of person that can go up to somebody,
- 28:34somebody that's in a hard time, in a downcast time and lift them
- 28:39up by maybe just having an encouraging word for them, going
- 28:44along beside them, asking them what's going on in their life,
- 28:47whatever, that's extremely important.
- 28:50Now, that's not showy, right? It's not, it may not, it may not
- 28:54even appear to any of the rest of the body, but that one other
- 28:56member. But it's extremely important.
- 29:00And I think that that's kind of his point in verse 19.
- 29:03If everybody, if all that everybody did was just prophecy
- 29:11or heal people, where would the guy where, where would any of us
- 29:15ever get a word of encouragement?
- 29:17Where would ever any of us ever get a word of wisdom?
- 29:19You know what I mean? Like that's his point.
- 29:21Where would you ever get what you have to offer if you did the
- 29:25same thing that the most showy, you know, not necessarily show
- 29:28in a bad way. I'm just saying the most obvious
- 29:30gifts like healing or prophesying or speaking in
- 29:33tongues is. Where would where would that?
- 29:35Other thing come from that we all need the mercy or the person
- 29:39of faith or the person that has a word of wisdom.
- 29:41Like where would you? Where would that come from?
- 29:43From That's his point I think. But.
- 29:45Yeah, boy, that's rich Andrew. Yeah, I try to preach this quite
- 29:54often, this concept at our fellowship because it gives
- 29:59everybody a purpose. And I think to Leon's point
- 30:05here, whether you can do multiple ones, I believe most of
- 30:09us have a whole host of gifts, mercy, faith, charity, like
- 30:15loving one another. Love, I think is a gift 'cause
- 30:20he says love, trunks, charity trunks, all the gifts.
- 30:26So Can you imagine what would happen in the church if we would
- 30:32all be focused on that one body just like we are?
- 30:35I don't care what part of your body, if you hit it with a
- 30:37hammer, the rest of your body is going to respond very quickly to
- 30:41that little spot there. It comes to 8 man.
- 30:46If you get a splinter under your little toenail, your whole body
- 30:50is going to stop what it's doing and go focus on that splinter
- 30:53under that little toenail and try to remove it, fix it.
- 30:59You know, it, if we would treat our bodies the same way we do at
- 31:04church, we would say, oh, that's just their annoying toenail,
- 31:06it'll be fine. Or we don't really need it.
- 31:09And, you know, then we'd have an infect.
- 31:12Then we have an infection and all of a sudden the whole body
- 31:15is hurting because we thought that little toenail was
- 31:17insignificant. Yeah, that's good.
- 31:22You know, and I just as, as Aaron was talking and you,
- 31:27Andrew, you know, we look at a, we might tend to look all right.
- 31:31In the past in the religious circles, you know what somebody
- 31:34was maybe had a gift of mercy. We didn't recognize it as such.
- 31:37We, we, we just talked about all that pusher.
- 31:40But you know, he just lets people run over him when in fact
- 31:43he was a godly man full of mercy and just willing to, you know,
- 31:46be abused in the name of God, you know, or whatever.
- 31:49And so I mean, this is kind of just talking to me like, how do
- 31:52I respond to the people? Like, do I recognize it as a
- 31:55gift, some of these things that people are practicing?
- 31:58Or do I look, tend to look it as a fault or like what?
- 32:01They'd only do this or that and then it would be better, you
- 32:04know? So yeah, it's this.
- 32:06This goes two ways, doesn't it? We can learn about what these
- 32:08gifts are and how they operate, but how do they affect the rest
- 32:11of us? Listen to get a watch it too.
- 32:14Damn. I think the body illustration
- 32:19obviously is a very, very fruitful way of discussing this
- 32:23because the church now, it seems, has narrowed down to
- 32:29basically a gathering to hear a gifted speaker.
- 32:33And we kind of forget that the church is actually a group of
- 32:37people that does gather to hear teaching and preaching and sing
- 32:41songs of worship and praise. But there's a lot more that the
- 32:44body does than just eat. There's a lot more that the body
- 32:47does than just see, you know, the body is doing things
- 32:49constantly behind the scenes, like you mentioned before, liver
- 32:52and spleen, things that we don't think even do anything are
- 32:56constantly at work inside the body.
- 32:58And so I like that he points that like Aaron already
- 33:01mentioned that this part here is from the the perspective like,
- 33:05well, I look at the church, which to me is Sunday morning
- 33:08and I don't have anything to offer.
- 33:09So I must not be part of the body.
- 33:11I don't have anything to give. I Can't Sing a song, I can't
- 33:15play an instrument, I can't preach A sermon.
- 33:17Therefore I'm not of the body. You're thinking much too
- 33:20narrowly about what the body of Christ is.
- 33:23There's so many different ways in which we can contribute, and
- 33:25He's going to give us a whole long list of them.
- 33:27So I won't get into too many little illustrations here.
- 33:30But I like that he's saying, especially at the end, that as
- 33:33it hath pleased him. So if a man is genuinely from
- 33:38his heart, a very gifted speaker in his preaching, God was
- 33:43pleased to give that man that gift, and God is pleased to use
- 33:47that man's gift to benefit the whole body.
- 33:50But if God has gifted you to be the kind of guy who takes
- 33:54someone fishing and gives them a word of encouragement, that
- 33:57pleases God just as much as the man standing behind the pulpit
- 34:01or giving or rating some great sermon like this is what pleased
- 34:05God. He throws it this way.
- 34:07We should not be looking at this and jealousy because all one
- 34:11body you don't don't have a finger wishing it was a toe and
- 34:15vice versa like those are there. Our body is content being the
- 34:19different members that it is because the recognizes it's all
- 34:23part of 1 body and that's kind of the point he's driving home
- 34:26here. Yeah, that's really good,
- 34:28Velvet. Yeah, I don't have a whole lot,
- 34:30but I was just going to say it's very obvious that he is focusing
- 34:35on one like because the verses that we have read up to this
- 34:39point, the word 1 member or one body is used nine times.
- 34:46And so if the his focal, what he's trying to get across is you
- 34:50guys, no matter how poor or rich or, or great or low you are, you
- 34:59know, in status wise, you are one body and out of that works.
- 35:07God works through his spirit and gifts of the spirit in a
- 35:12miraculous way. And I, I like what you were
- 35:14saying, Dan, and that's kind of what I wanted to focus on too,
- 35:18is that so we think that, you know, a lot of people say, well,
- 35:22how can I use my gifts? Like, you know, like I can't, I
- 35:26don't have the opportunity to use my gifts or I don't really
- 35:29want to. Maybe I just go to church on
- 35:31Sunday morning and I sit in the service and we worship and we
- 35:34listen to the preacher and then we go home and, you know, how
- 35:37can I well, guess what of being of the body of Christ is more
- 35:42than that actually. So I, I think it obviously is
- 35:49where we are basically living. How would you say not living
- 35:55together necessarily, but we are one body and we're functioning
- 35:59daily or weekly for sure, and almost daily as one.
- 36:06And that should be happening. Like, like you were saying, Dan,
- 36:10where maybe your gift is taking someone fishing or you know,
- 36:14whatever it is or giving someone a call and and encouraging them
- 36:19because you know, you've heard that they're feeling down or, or
- 36:23whatever it is. All that is a working of the
- 36:25body, not just someone standing behind a pulpit and preaching or
- 36:30someone meeting worship. Right.
- 36:32So it's it's much. Broader than that, yeah, for
- 36:36sure. I wonder if these gifts kind of
- 36:40come naturally if if it's something that you learn or
- 36:46exercise in or get good at or that's the secondary discussion.
- 36:53But I'll I'll read the next verses.
- 36:55If you have any input on that, let me know.
- 36:59Verse 20 And now are they many members yet but one body and the
- 37:05I cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of the nor again
- 37:09the head to the feet. I have no need of you.
- 37:12They much more those members of the body which seem to be more
- 37:17feeble are necessary, and those members of the body which we
- 37:22think to be less honorable upon those we bestow more abundant
- 37:27honor, and our uncombly parts have more abundant comebliness.
- 37:34And then I'll let you go on this.
- 37:37But that's that is a that what kind of gets your attention
- 37:43doesn't. Yeah, I'm sure a lot of a lot of
- 37:48good could be said here. But the thing that came to my
- 37:50mind was that, you know, as a general rule, I tend to dress
- 37:55myself in a way that would hopefully accentuate the parts
- 38:00that are kind of worth looking at.
- 38:01Like I, I don't want you to be keep staring at my toes or my
- 38:05knees or my hips or anything weird like I love handles and
- 38:09whatever else like that there. Those parts are less calmly,
- 38:13they, they don't look quite as nice.
- 38:15And so in a, in a physical way of, of looking at things, we can
- 38:19almost think, well, that's a part that I'd rather just cover
- 38:22up. And, and it sounds almost like
- 38:24a, a shame type of thing. And it could be to a degree, but
- 38:29those parts, all the parts that you have, obviously that, you
- 38:32know, like I'm, I've made a joke about love handles or excess fat
- 38:36or something, you're not proud of those parts.
- 38:38But all the different members of your body, the different
- 38:40functions that they have all serve at an extraordinary
- 38:44purpose. And now he's kind of taking the
- 38:46reverse stand of what he was earlier.
- 38:48Like Aaron pointed out before, it's not from this perspective
- 38:52of I can't participate because I don't, I'm not this.
- 38:55I can't be that because I'm not this.
- 38:57Now he's saying, by the way, say it's it's not don't look down on
- 39:01someone because they're a less only looking part.
- 39:07It it's takes some humility on all parts to recognize that this
- 39:12person who may be to you and your pride might you might feel
- 39:15like they are a lesser part. You have to recognize that all
- 39:20parts are as necessary as each other part, right?
- 39:23So I think that's kind of the attention he's trying to bring
- 39:26to it is sometimes the less honorable, the less calmly, the
- 39:30more feeble parts are some of the most important parts, as
- 39:34Andrew pointed out, like if your toe is hurting, it takes
- 39:37precedent over everything. And so even if it's an unconely
- 39:40part or a less feeble or more feeble part or less honorable
- 39:44part, that there of no less significance.
- 39:46And it's up to us to kind of discover where does my gift
- 39:49actually fit in? And, and do it with joy.
- 39:52Do it with a in a way where it's like I'm content to be right
- 39:55here. This is where I actually want to
- 39:57be, not because I'm avoiding being my gift, but because I am
- 40:01being my gift. I am being what I'm supposed to
- 40:03be to the church. And you don't, you don't need to
- 40:06take pride in whatever position you have because all parts are
- 40:09for one purpose or another. So.
- 40:13No. And it it almost seems like in
- 40:15some places in the Bible, he might be talking about humility
- 40:18here, recognizing that gift that you tend to deem as less or
- 40:22whatever to recognize it as still part of the body.
- 40:26But Melbourne? Yeah, so it's interesting, you
- 40:29know, I just was saying it. He seems to be making a point
- 40:31about 1 and he and he was earlier.
- 40:36You know, he's saying that you're 1 body one, you're all
- 40:39one Now he's saying, but look, guys, don't be looking down on
- 40:44one another, like don't be looking on the members that are
- 40:47not as commonly right. He says like you were.
- 40:50You mentioned the word humility, Lee, and that's kind of what I
- 40:53see there. You know he says that we should
- 40:56actually be still more abundant honor on the uncommonly parts
- 41:01right and so because he says in verse 24.
- 41:06I don't think you read that, but he says for our commonly parts
- 41:10have no need, but God had tempered the body together
- 41:13having giving more abundant honor to the part which lacketh.
- 41:17So if you know, if someone doesn't seem to have a gift that
- 41:22seems to matter. We should actually be bestowing
- 41:27them more abundant honor because in fact, most times things that
- 41:33are behind the scenes or getting done, like whether it's in a
- 41:40like a show or anything, the things that are getting done
- 41:44behind the scenes are actually the most important, right?
- 41:49Because if it wouldn't be for that, the show wouldn't happen
- 41:53and the show wouldn't be near as good.
- 41:54I mean, so that's what he's trying to get across here is
- 41:59that don't look down on one another.
- 42:02But be more humble with one another.
- 42:11I have a couple of things that may seem a little zoomed out,
- 42:15but one is I don't. I'm not saying, I'm certainly
- 42:21not saying, because he goes on to say another place, how that
- 42:25the prophecy or the tongues affect the unbeliever.
- 42:28So I'm not saying that the gift is not profitable to the
- 42:33unbeliever, but I am saying that a lot of these things that I
- 42:36think he's talking about here, it is the body profiting itself.
- 42:41Would you, would you agree with that?
- 42:42In other words, it's, it's the body benefiting.
- 42:45It's it's, it's like we're working together.
- 42:48We're temp. He's going to go on to say it's
- 42:49tempered together like and I'm and I'm said that to say this
- 42:54sometimes the sometimes maybe the guy that is able to be
- 43:01eloquent in the speaking needs the most encouragement because
- 43:06maybe he's, you know, got a lot going on in his life personally.
- 43:11You know what I mean? Like so so the member that is
- 43:13saying somewhat seems like behind the scene comes up and
- 43:17gives that that obvious part, that comely part that speaker,
- 43:22that that obvious worker outward, you know, that
- 43:26everybody's seeing and encouragement and the body works
- 43:29together to profit itself. You know what I mean?
- 43:32Like, does that make sense? I mean, you understand what I'm
- 43:34saying there that I don't like I said, I'm not, I'm not saying
- 43:38that some of these gifts do not reach outside of that box, but I
- 43:43am saying that I think he is. He just said, and I mean, that's
- 43:46what he said back. We've said it several times,
- 43:48verse 7. It's to profit with all like
- 43:50it's to profit each other. You know, this body, this body
- 43:53is, is working together to profit itself.
- 43:58And this will be the last thing I say.
- 44:01But that would lead me to say this.
- 44:04I went to several churches, which granted, a lot of my I
- 44:08lived further away from, but but I would go to places and preach.
- 44:12And I know that most of the church, if they got there 15
- 44:17minutes before the services started and left 5 minutes after
- 44:21it ended, that's all they saw each other.
- 44:24And I don't and you know, like if, if, if the point is that
- 44:29some of these things, well, I'll say it a different way.
- 44:32That's the reason the foot is saying I don't or the eyes
- 44:37saying I don't need to the well, how do you say it?
- 44:41The I cannot say to the hand. That's the reason I would say
- 44:44the hand because if that's all the body is together, if that's
- 44:48all they're seeing each other is while this guy's up here leading
- 44:51the songs and this is up here, you know, doing the sermon and
- 44:55the bodies never together. No wonder people feel like
- 44:58they're useless, right? So I would just like I said, I
- 45:01hope that makes sense that I tied that together in a way.
- 45:06But I do think that that is important for us to realize is
- 45:10that we need to be an actual body like that.
- 45:13We need to be functioning together outside of the hour
- 45:17service or whatever it is. And that we are, I mean, because
- 45:22that's what he says, do good unto all men, especially those
- 45:25of the household of faith, right?
- 45:27I mean, we are, we should be working together as a body, you
- 45:31know, and profiting each other. For sure.
- 45:35Yeah, absolutely, Andrew. Yeah, it he's, I think he's
- 45:43still on the same thing about the body.
- 45:45Like it's, it's just going in more little bit more detail.
- 45:50What this challenges me to do is to teach, not only teach this,
- 45:57like I said the last time, but to give that opportunity, make
- 46:01that opportunity extremely available in our fellowships.
- 46:07If that opportunity is not available in our fellowship and
- 46:10it's not talked about and it's not embraced, every gift, even
- 46:15if it's completely uncommonly like cleaning the toilets or
- 46:21doing ministry and stuff, going out to eat with somebody or
- 46:27talking to somebody that is just annoying or whatever, Nobody's
- 46:30watching right? During the week.
- 46:32I think the body is functioning during the week like it
- 46:35functions 24/7. So when we do hard things, we go
- 46:40and help somebody when we're already tied up and busy.
- 46:43But somebody needs help and we make time and it's hard, but
- 46:47nobody knew. That I went.
- 46:49And helped that person. Those are the gifts and those
- 46:53are the things that God sees. It's the things that are not
- 46:56seen that are not glorified. And again, I can't emphasize
- 47:02enough how that this should give all the believers great purpose.
- 47:07And I think we've all been given gifts that you can start
- 47:10exercising right now. And when you start exercising
- 47:13them, God multiplies it as you get your senses and your gifts
- 47:18exercised. He keeps adding on and doing
- 47:21things where you look back and go, wow, what happened there?
- 47:25But if you just sit around and think, well, I don't have a gift
- 47:28or I don't know what my calling is, then maybe, maybe God won't
- 47:34do much for you because you're not willing to go out in faith
- 47:38exercising the gifts that you already have.
- 47:40I would say everybody needs to get out and start exercising
- 47:43their gifts that they already have.
- 47:45Simple, uncommonly gifts, uncommonly things that nobody
- 47:49recognizes, Those are glorified in God's eyes.
- 47:52Yeah, very good. I can say something.
- 47:57You are there. I discovered many years ago that
- 48:02I might not be the best person to greet all the newcomers.
- 48:06Sometimes I can do it fine and we hit it off and things work
- 48:09great. But I I can be a little bit too
- 48:11abrupt with certain people, like they, I feel like I'm too much
- 48:14for them almost right where I can be in their face too much,
- 48:16ask questions that maybe are too, too much of A of a
- 48:20challenge, almost right. Like, hey, where are you from?
- 48:22How long you been a Christian? It's almost like, whoa, whoa,
- 48:24slow down. I'm just here to check it out,
- 48:26right? And so I started to see there
- 48:29was other people in the church who to me didn't look that
- 48:32gifted. They didn't seem to appear to
- 48:35have some great spiritual purpose in the church, but the
- 48:38newcomers all gravitated to them.
- 48:40They were super welcoming. They were just one of those
- 48:43people that everybody wanted to be around.
- 48:45They were the first to be have have someone in their house for
- 48:48lunch and whatnot. And it made me realize very
- 48:51quickly that I could think myself somehow more important
- 48:55because I can throw sentences together when he hears this guy
- 48:58who seems less calmly, less important in some ways, doing a
- 49:02much more purposeful work at that time, being very profitable
- 49:07to the body in ways that I couldn't even be right.
- 49:10So on one hand, I made me recognize, OK, I'll just kind of
- 49:12stay in my lane a bit more. The other hand, it made me
- 49:15appreciate someone like him. And then the other thing I
- 49:17wanted to say about the uncomely parts, You think about the heart
- 49:21and the liver in the stomach. Those are some of our most
- 49:23uncomely parts. And I'm glad they're on the
- 49:25inside and somewhere that nobody can see them because they, they
- 49:27seem kind of disgusting to most people, but they're the most
- 49:31important ones. They're the ones we protect with
- 49:33all that we have, right? Like you cover that chest up no
- 49:36matter what. Like, I want those organs, those
- 49:38parts protected. And so it should show us some
- 49:42lessons in this way to the people who often bring the the
- 49:46atmosphere to the church and and make it a welcoming place.
- 49:49We ought to protect them and care for them.
- 49:51And it could be the other way too, like maybe someone who
- 49:54recognizes that they're not the teacher or the preacher.
- 49:56They should feel that kind of protection for those that do do
- 50:00that well and bestow double honor upon those that labor in
- 50:03the Word and the doctrine and all that so.
- 50:06Yeah, that's, that's really good.
- 50:07And that that kind of I was going to give an illustration a
- 50:10little bit too like we were just me and my field Rep for the for
- 50:14the horse sale. We're down in Gifford, Illinois
- 50:18at a large Percher draft horse auction last week.
- 50:23And a lot of these people in the draft horse world are becoming
- 50:27to realize that that Waverly, the sale that I bought 2 years
- 50:31ago is kind of starting to come back on the map.
- 50:34And they come to me. Lots and lots of people that I
- 50:36didn't know even would come over here.
- 50:38And hey, congratulations on taking Waverly over.
- 50:40I see it's coming back. There's more horses consigned
- 50:43than ever. And I get all this praise from
- 50:45different people that I don't even know.
- 50:47And but what they don't know is the 10s of hours that we sit in
- 50:52in meetings with each other, my entire team, all the staff.
- 50:56You don't just brainstorming. And I'm.
- 50:59I'm not making this thing better.
- 51:01Yeah, OK, maybe I'm the face of it.
- 51:02Maybe I'm the comely part that he's talking about here in a
- 51:06sense not not naturally, but. Yeah.
- 51:09And but but what, what he what it looks like when we read this
- 51:15verse 24, it says that the comely part has no need.
- 51:19You know, I get all kinds of flattery from people in the
- 51:21world. You know, I have what I need
- 51:23more of it than I need ever, but I make a point of making sure
- 51:28that that gets fed down downstream to the guys that are
- 51:31actually making the difference on the back end because it looks
- 51:34like I'm changing that thing. I'm not.
- 51:37They are coming up with ideas that I implemented, put in
- 51:40motion and make happen. And this whole thing is true in
- 51:43the church world too. There's a lot of stuff that
- 51:45could. Melvin, you talked about a
- 51:46little bit what several of you did.
- 51:48There's a lot of stuff that goes on the inside.
- 51:50Even, you know, our heart. You can't tell necessarily until
- 51:54it's sick or not working properly that it's even there
- 51:56hardly, you know, and but it's making you that's making you
- 52:01alive. And there's a lot of parts just
- 52:03like that. So verse 24 and I'll let Andrew
- 52:07go first on this for comely parts have no need, but God hath
- 52:12tempered the body together. I like that that use of that
- 52:16word tempered the body together. That's neat, having given more
- 52:19abundant honor to that part, part which lacked so that there
- 52:24should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have
- 52:28the same care one for another. That's a beautiful verse when
- 52:32you look at or versus when you look at it in the in the realm
- 52:35of a church body, right? I mean, that's good, Andrew.
- 52:41Yeah, that's just what we were saying, right?
- 52:44Exactly. If that toe hurts, the same
- 52:47attention is paid to that, as it were.
- 52:50If someone was in your eye, well, I don't know.
- 52:53The eye's pretty critical. We get something in your eye.
- 52:57It's like, you know, somebody got something in their eye.
- 53:00We responded a little bit more different, but I was just
- 53:05communicating with one of the guys that's actually listening.
- 53:09He's a a no order minister, Amish minister that's listening
- 53:13tonight. And he was just saying how that
- 53:15his neighbor talked of a guy that committed suicide and one
- 53:22of his notes was that nobody would even wave at him or smile.
- 53:27You know, I think that is the uncomb with things that it's so
- 53:31easy for every one of us to do that makes a difference in
- 53:35someone's life, regardless how immature we think someone would
- 53:39be to let that bother them if oh, nobody waved to me, now I'm
- 53:43depressed. But that's the uncommonly gifts
- 53:47that God is saying. That member, that body, that
- 53:51person, it's just as important as the eye of a person, You
- 53:58know, that would be like the acid in the stomach that
- 54:01dissolves the food is just as important as the heart or
- 54:05whatever. Like if that acid wasn't
- 54:07working, then we would also be in trouble.
- 54:11A lot of nasty, disgusting, smelly things in our gut that if
- 54:15they weren't working, he'd be in trouble.
- 54:19And so we need to, I think, I think this will help us look
- 54:23past a lot of ugly things to help a brother or sister, ugly
- 54:29stuff, nasty, stinky, whatever, you know, think about the date.
- 54:35I mean, the nursing homes. I mean, that's some work right
- 54:37there. Like, but he's referring this to
- 54:42people, though, a person, a whole person, regardless of what
- 54:48that person brings to the body of Christ, He's telling us
- 54:53doesn't matter how uncomely he is, how hard it is to get along
- 54:58with that person. If he's hurting, you respond
- 55:01just like you would if your toe was hurting or your your heart
- 55:06was hurting. You know.
- 55:08Well, Can you imagine what the church would be?
- 55:10We would really focus on this a little more.
- 55:13Everybody would get purpose. Everybody would activate their
- 55:16gifts. Everybody would start
- 55:17ministering more purposefully and just bring a lot of joy in
- 55:22the fellowship. And we couldn't.
- 55:24I mean, I think we got a taste of it.
- 55:27We love coming together, where we get together.
- 55:29It's I think everybody likes it. It I hear something.
- 55:32It could be just magnified a little bit more.
- 55:36Good stuff. Damn.
- 55:40Yeah, I guess my my thought went right back to that same thing as
- 55:43before, the part that lacked. It says here God have put more
- 55:47abundant honor on the part that lacked.
- 55:49It seems like he's talking about the uncombly part still.
- 55:52So again, the liver, the heart, the brains, the kidneys, those
- 55:56are things that we protect with all that we have because we
- 56:00value those parts more than the rest.
- 56:03Like like Andrew did, as he was saying that we value the toe as
- 56:07much as the eye. He even recognized that no,
- 56:09actually, while the eye would come first, like your eye is
- 56:11done, you can't work anymore. If your toe hurts, you can
- 56:14probably somehow tough it out and just keep going.
- 56:16So there are certain parts, you know, we put eyeglass protection
- 56:19on and we put vests on. We try to protect the parts that
- 56:23are the the most valuable to us in a sense, the parts that keep
- 56:28us alive and keep us functioning.
- 56:31And it's I don't know exactly what God means here by saying
- 56:34that God hath given more abundant honor to the part which
- 56:38lacked. And I'd be curious to to get
- 56:41more in depth understanding of that.
- 56:43What it what does that mean exactly like the parts that
- 56:46lacked our other. We often think of the more
- 56:48comely parts as the preachers and teachers and the the more
- 56:52the missionary types, right? And are those less abundantly
- 56:57honorable than the parts that are not doing those things?
- 57:00I I, I would love to hear more on that if you guys have some
- 57:03thoughts. Yeah, that's a good question.
- 57:07Mel would go go ahead on 24 and five there.
- 57:10Yeah, I don't know if I have the answer, Dan, but it does say in
- 57:13verse 24, if you read the just before that, it says but God had
- 57:19tempered the body together. So in other words, he may It
- 57:22makes it sound like the uncommonly parts are tempered
- 57:27together with a commonly part like.
- 57:30So in other words, there shouldn't be more honor going to
- 57:36the commonly parts and the uncommonly part.
- 57:38It's like equal abundant honor from God.
- 57:42Maybe, I don't know, that's just.
- 57:43What the he says in verse 25 that we'd have the same care for
- 57:47one another. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:49I don't know. That's just that's just, I don't
- 57:50know if that is an answer to your question, but that's just
- 57:53one thing I see. But there there's it's just so
- 57:58important that we because that we look to each other and I
- 58:05think of that verse where it says think, think not.
- 58:11Oh man, I don't know if I can get it together or it says every
- 58:15man think not of himself more highly than other.
- 58:19And that video, yeah, I'm I'm butchering a little bit, but I
- 58:22should have looked it up. But it's just that we need to be
- 58:26looking at one another to lift one another up right in the body
- 58:32so that he says in verse 25. So there's no schism in the
- 58:36body. In other words.
- 58:37So there is no, because think about it, if, if the heart, if
- 58:41my heart and my liver or my stomach would not be getting
- 58:47along with each other. Like what?
- 58:50Wait a minute, I'll rephrase that.
- 58:52What in my stomach and my large intestine weren't getting along
- 58:55with each other? You know, I would have a serious
- 58:57problem, right? I mean, there could be I'd have
- 59:00issues, serious issues. So he's just saying, look, as as
- 59:04a body, you're all one member. There should not be any schisms
- 59:09in the body. And I think that is so important
- 59:11where so many times we get focused on one another and our
- 59:17like, because our other person's like you were saying, Daniel or
- 59:21Andrew, the other person's stinks or, or makes us whatever
- 59:26drives us nuts or whatever. And then that's what we focus
- 59:29on. And that is not what we should
- 59:30be focusing on, but focusing on lifting each other up and
- 59:35encouraging one another in the body.
- 59:38Amen. Amen, Aaron.
- 59:40I'll let you finish it up. I'm actually going to kind of
- 59:43back up to 23 and and notice this, he says in 23 those
- 59:49members of the body which we think to be less honorable upon
- 59:52these we bestow more abundant honor.
- 59:56So like I think that that's something I guess I will ask it
- 1:00:01in a question why to myself and all of us is do do we honor?
- 1:00:08Appreciate the other members of the body because in this, in a,
- 1:00:13in a sense, you know, we're all we, I say as five, we're all in
- 1:00:17a similar position where we would probably all do some
- 1:00:19teaching or be one of the comely parts of a body.
- 1:00:24Do we appreciate, do we honor the rest of the body?
- 1:00:28You know what I mean? Like, because that's what he
- 1:00:30said. He he says it as a factual
- 1:00:32statement. Like we like himself and others,
- 1:00:35we bestow more abundant honor upon these less honorable parts.
- 1:00:42And then he, like one of you all said, he ends at verse 25 by
- 1:00:46saying, but that the member should have the same care one
- 1:00:49for another. Like do you know Melvin pointed
- 1:00:54us out the whole time. He's how many times has he said
- 1:00:56one body 1, you know, 1111 all that together, I think we, we
- 1:01:03probably should all evaluate our appreciation and honor that we
- 1:01:07are given to all the members of our particular body.
- 1:01:10Like are we actually bestowing honor upon all those members?
- 1:01:14Do we appreciate the fact they're part of this body that
- 1:01:17we're in? You know, like, I think that
- 1:01:18would be a good way to look at that is just kind of look at
- 1:01:22yourself and consider what do you really appreciate all those
- 1:01:25that are in the body with you? But.
- 1:01:27Yeah, Yep. Good stuff.
- 1:01:31Well, that was that was a good study.
- 1:01:34I always enjoy what comes out of these.
- 1:01:36I just figured we kind of breeze through this.
- 1:01:38Everyone knows what we're talking about when we talk about
- 1:01:40the ear of the eye that be in the elbow.
- 1:01:43We understand that. But when you really dig out into
- 1:01:45there's no way to to read it properly without giving give a
- 1:01:49thought to these discussions that come out.
- 1:01:51So it's really good. So anyway, that is it for
- 1:01:55tonight. Join us again next Monday night,
- 1:01:58same time, same place. We're going to finish this
- 1:02:00chapter, Lord Willa, next week and then we'll see about either
- 1:02:05going back into a book or hit another subject.
- 1:02:07I'm not sure yet, but we'll figure that out and go from
- 1:02:12there. So anyway, have a good week
- 1:02:14guys. God bless you for your time and
- 1:02:16your efforts here. I do appreciate it.
- 1:02:17Many others do too. God bless you guys and we'll see
- 1:02:20you.
