- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Monday the 29th of January
- 0:18and you have tapped on play Made Some space in your day to invite
- 0:22me in so that you and I can unwrap and read the next chapter
- 0:28of God's Word. As we continue on this
- 0:30fascinating story of David coming into his own and saw
- 0:35being squeezed out. The the whole book of Samuel 1st
- 0:40and 2nd is not written as a biographical account of what
- 0:45happened and who did what. This is the story that is
- 0:49theological. This is a story teaching us
- 0:51about God, about God establishing his covenant with
- 0:55David and about God establishing his kingship through David and
- 1:00beyond. There is so much going on and a
- 1:03lot of the story really does revolve around David and we will
- 1:07hear Saul doing all sorts of terrible mean and and we will
- 1:13hear soul really becoming quite an unlikable character in
- 1:16today's reading. And this is all to say that this
- 1:21is not David who came along and snatched the throne from Saul,
- 1:24but saw really disqualified himself from continuing in that
- 1:29role as king, and God takes it from him and gifts it to David.
- 1:33David is not in the business of snatching Thrones, but he is
- 1:37receiving that responsibility from God.
- 1:40That is enough from me. Let us read this together.
- 1:44Let's open up and read First Samuel chapter 20.
- 1:59David now fled from Naioth in Ramah and found Jonathan.
- 2:04What have I done? He exclaimed.
- 2:07What is my crime? How have I offended your father
- 2:10that he is so determined to kill me?
- 2:12That's not true, Jonathan protested.
- 2:15You're not going to die, He always tells me.
- 2:18Everything is going to do, even the little things.
- 2:21I know my father wouldn't hide something like this from me.
- 2:24It just isn't. So then David took an oath
- 2:29before Jonathan and said your father knows perfectly well
- 2:33about our friendship. So he has said to himself, I
- 2:36won't tell Jonathan why should I hurt him?
- 2:40But I swear to you that I am only a step away from death.
- 2:45I swear it by the Lord and by your own soul.
- 2:49Tell me what I can do to help you, Jonathan exclaimed.
- 2:54David replied. Tomorrow we celebrate the New
- 2:57Moon Festival. I've always eaten with the king
- 3:00on this occasion, but tomorrow I'll hide in the field and stay
- 3:04there until the evening of the third day.
- 3:07If your father asks where I am, tell him I asked permission to
- 3:11go home to Bethlehem for an annual family sacrifice.
- 3:15If he says, fine, you will know all this well.
- 3:19But if he is angry and loses his temper, you will know he is
- 3:23determined to kill me. Show me this loyalty as my sworn
- 3:27friend, for we made a solemn pact before the Lord.
- 3:31Or kill me yourself if I've sinned against your father.
- 3:34But please, don't betray me to him.
- 3:37Never, Jonathan exclaimed. You know that even if the
- 3:41slightest notion my father was planning to kill you, I would
- 3:44tell you at once then? David asked.
- 3:48How will I know whether or not your father is angry?
- 3:51Come out to the field with me, Jonathan replied.
- 3:54And they went out there together.
- 3:56Then Jonathan told David, I promise by the Lord, the God of
- 4:01Israel, that by this time, tomorrow or the next day at the
- 4:04latest, I will talk to my father and let you know at once how he
- 4:09feels about you, Even if he speaks favourably about you.
- 4:12I will let you know. But if he is angry and wants you
- 4:16killed, may the Lord strike me and even kill me if I don't warn
- 4:20you, so you can escape and live. May the Lord be with you as you
- 4:25used to be with my Father, and may you treat me with the
- 4:29faithful love of the Lord as long as I live.
- 4:33But if I die, treat my family with this faithful love, even
- 4:37when the Lord destroys all your enemies from the face of the
- 4:40earth. So Jonathan made a solemn pact
- 4:43with David, saying, May the Lord destroy all your enemies.
- 4:49And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again.
- 4:53For Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.
- 4:57Then Jonathan said, Tomorrow we celebrate the New Moon festival.
- 5:02You will be missed when you're placed at the table is empty the
- 5:06day after tomorrow, toward evening, go to the place where
- 5:09you hid before and wait there by the stone pile.
- 5:13I will come out and shoot 3 arrows to the side of the stone
- 5:16pile as though I was shooting at a target.
- 5:19Then I will send a boy to bring the arrows back.
- 5:22If you hear me tell him they're on this side, then you will know
- 5:27as surely as the Lord lives at all, is well and there is no
- 5:31trouble. But if I tell him, go farther,
- 5:34the arrows are still ahead of you.
- 5:36Then it will mean that you must leave immediately, for the Lord
- 5:40is sending you away. And may the Lord make us keep
- 5:43our promises to each other, for He has witnessed them.
- 5:48So David hid himself in the field, and when the New Moon
- 5:51Festival began, the King sat down to eat.
- 5:55He sat at his usual place against the wall, with Jonathan
- 5:58sitting opposite him and Abner beside him.
- 6:01But David's place was empty. Saul didn't say anything about
- 6:06it that day, for he said to himself, something must have
- 6:10made David ceremonially unclean. But when David's place was empty
- 6:15again the next day, Saul asked Jonathan why hasn't the son of
- 6:19Jesse been here for the meal, either yesterday or today?
- 6:23Jonathan replied. David earnestly asked me if he
- 6:27could go to Bethlehem. He said.
- 6:29Please let me go, for we are having a family sacrifice.
- 6:33My brother demanded that I be there, so please let me get away
- 6:36to see my brothers. That's why he isn't here at the
- 6:39King's table. Saul boiled with rage at
- 6:44Jonathan. You stupid son of a whore.
- 6:48He swore at him. Do you think I don't know that
- 6:51you want him to be king in your place, shaming yourself and your
- 6:56mother? As long as that son of Jesse is
- 6:59alive, you'll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill
- 7:04him, but why should he be put to death?
- 7:07Jonathan asked his father. What has he done then?
- 7:11Saul hurled his spear at Jonathan, intending to kill him.
- 7:14So at last, Jonathan realised that his father was really
- 7:18determined to kill David. Jonathan left the table in
- 7:22fierce anger and refused to eat on that second day of the
- 7:26festival, for he was crushed by his father's shameful behaviour
- 7:30toward David. The next morning, as agreed,
- 7:34Jonathan went out into the field and took a young boy with him to
- 7:37gather his arrows. Start running, he told the boy.
- 7:41So you can find the arrows as I shoot them.
- 7:44So the boy ran, and Jonathan shot an arrow beyond him.
- 7:48When the boy had almost reached the arrow, Jonathan shouted.
- 7:51The arrow was still ahead of you.
- 7:53Hurry, hurry. Don't wait, said the boy quickly
- 7:57gathered up the arrows and ran back to his master.
- 8:00He, of course, suspected nothing.
- 8:02Only Jonathan and David understood the signal.
- 8:06Then Jonathan gave his bow and arrows to the boy and told him
- 8:10to take them back to town. As soon as the boy was gone,
- 8:14David came out from where he had been hiding near the stone pile.
- 8:18Then David bowed three times to Jonathan with his face to the
- 8:22ground. Both of them were in tears as
- 8:25they embraced each other and said goodbye.
- 8:28Especially David. At last, Jonathan said to David.
- 8:33Go in peace, for we have sworn loyalty to each other in the
- 8:37Lord's name. The Lord is the witness of a
- 8:40bond between us and our children for ever.
- 8:44Then David left and Jonathan returned to the town.
- 8:59Lord Jesus, thank you for this week.
- 9:01Thank you for the opportunities we will have to further your
- 9:06Kingdom. Thank you for the people that
- 9:09you were placed in our path, that we can approach them not
- 9:12with anger or with selfishness, but with love, with justice and
- 9:19with forgiveness. Thank you that you give us this
- 9:23anti example in Seoul who is just so moved by his own
- 9:28ambition that it blinds him. Lord, I pray that your ambition
- 9:33would always trump our own. As we choose which path to
- 9:37travel each day, in every moment where we're faced with different
- 9:41possibilities of ways that we can choose to go thank you.
- 9:46That you don't just love us, you don't just forgive us.
- 9:49You don't just invite us into your family, but you invite us
- 9:53to be agents of your Kingdom. Lord, I just pray that we follow
- 10:00your heart, that you shape us and mould us to do this work,
- 10:05but most importantly to do the work of knowing in our heart
- 10:09that we are loved and forgiven, children of you, our Most High
- 10:13God and Saviour. And it's in Jesus name that we
- 10:16pray. All of this I mean.
