- 0:11Speaker 1: write Julius Jones a single setback? Matt pumpfis looking at
- 0:14Speaker 1: the gold line. He throws it into the end zone. Touchdown.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Say Hawks, it's Michael Bumpas with a diving catching the
- 0:21Speaker 1: end zone our ten yard touchdown reception for Puppas and
- 0:25Speaker 1: the kid out of Washington State has found himself a
- 0:29Speaker 1: place on this team powered by Seahawks dot Com. What else, Swells?
- 0:34Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk. I'm your host, Michael Bumpas,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and today we get to talk to the new kid
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the block, Shane Walging. How you doing today, man,
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm doing great, Michael, appreciate you having me on. Hey,
- 0:45Speaker 1: thanks for taking time out of your day. Ay, first question,
- 0:48Speaker 1: First thing first, like y Seattle, you know you come
- 0:52Speaker 1: from a hot rams offense. You're the passing coordinator, a
- 0:54Speaker 1: lot of success. I would assume there were teams that
- 0:57Speaker 1: has some interest in you. What about this organization and
- 1:00Speaker 1: this kind of felt right for you? I think just
- 1:03Speaker 1: from the initial talks. It was all about the right fit.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It felt natural, It felt, you know, like a place
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's got a great established culture. You know, Coach Carroll
- 1:12Speaker 1: has done such an unbelievable job of developing that competitive
- 1:16Speaker 1: spirit up there, and uh, you know, just seeing it
- 1:18Speaker 1: from the opposite sideline and all these great competitions we've
- 1:22Speaker 1: had against each other, you know, it felt like a
- 1:24Speaker 1: place that that really was a spot that I'd love
- 1:27Speaker 1: to have a chance to be. And then sure enough
- 1:29Speaker 1: when the process started, you know, it didn't hurt that
- 1:31Speaker 1: it was in the in the Pacific Northwest, so there
- 1:34Speaker 1: was that aspect to it and just a lot of
- 1:36Speaker 1: things that came together where it just felt right awesome. Well,
- 1:39Speaker 1: let's talk talk a little football. So you're coming from
- 1:42Speaker 1: the Rams. You got weapons over there. You guys found
- 1:44Speaker 1: cam Akers, he's getting going m Cooper cup. When you
- 1:47Speaker 1: look at this officeive person Noel for the Seattle Seahawks,
- 1:50Speaker 1: what's your first impression. Yeah, I think there's a lot
- 1:53Speaker 1: of guys that have a lot of different unique talent sets,
- 1:57Speaker 1: you know, and I think that's what it's really what
- 1:59Speaker 1: makes re offense so so fun To be a part
- 2:01Speaker 1: of it and work with is you know, you get
- 2:03Speaker 1: a chance to to get into building and then see
- 2:06Speaker 1: how everyone's unique skill set kind of take shape within
- 2:10Speaker 1: an offensive system. And so you know, there's there's a
- 2:12Speaker 1: lot of different pieces. There's there's a lot of pieces that,
- 2:15Speaker 1: like I said, it's kind of seen from from the
- 2:17Speaker 1: opposite sideline that I'm excited to get to know more
- 2:20Speaker 1: and more and and you know, really it's about now
- 2:22Speaker 1: figuring out moving forward, what can everyone do. You've had
- 2:26Speaker 1: You've had a journey man you know from Portland, Oregon,
- 2:30Speaker 1: so you're you're a Northwest guy yourself. You go east
- 2:32Speaker 1: coast to college order Dame, UM, New England, Washington football team. UM.
- 2:37Speaker 1: What has your journey taught you? And how how has
- 2:40Speaker 1: it prepared you for this moment? I think every every
- 2:44Speaker 1: stop along the way has just been a great learning experience.
- 2:47Speaker 1: You know, been very fortunate to work for a lot
- 2:49Speaker 1: of great head coaches. And then you know, not only
- 2:52Speaker 1: the head coaches, but all these assistant coaches that I've
- 2:54Speaker 1: been able to develop relationships with and stayed in touch
- 2:58Speaker 1: with throughout the years to be able to have the
- 3:00Speaker 1: those football talks kind of all throughout the offseason. And
- 3:03Speaker 1: then you know, each stop along the way, I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: because it is such a relationship based business, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: being able to develop relationships with players at different spots.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And I think one of the the uh, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 1: fortunate parts about when when this job did break and
- 3:17Speaker 1: things did happen, you know, just some people that reach
- 3:19Speaker 1: out and you know just how appreciative I am of
- 3:22Speaker 1: what they've meant to me in the past and being
- 3:25Speaker 1: able to stay in touch. And and I think that's
- 3:27Speaker 1: just a huge, huge part of this because it is
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, it is a business, but there's there's a
- 3:31Speaker 1: relationship element to it that you know, It's not just
- 3:34Speaker 1: walking the door and then leave the building and that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: it right there. There's got to be more to that.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And that's why football is such a great game. As
- 3:41Speaker 1: you do develop those relationships, you do meet different people
- 3:43Speaker 1: from every you know, every spot in the in the country.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And you know, in my case, I've I've coached guys
- 3:49Speaker 1: from you know, Germany all the way on through everywhere
- 3:51Speaker 1: in the United States that have been on rosters. So
- 3:54Speaker 1: you know, I just think all throughout those stops there's
- 3:56Speaker 1: just different learning experiences and and you try to take
- 3:59Speaker 1: all all those things and and build your own formula
- 4:03Speaker 1: from each stop that you you've been a part of. Yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: that's what I love about football. And it's a frat
- 4:07Speaker 1: like once you're in, you make all these connections. You've
- 4:10Speaker 1: had many stops, so you're a part of a big network. So, um, balance, Right,
- 4:15Speaker 1: that's the word that we keep hearing when it comes
- 4:17Speaker 1: to what people want this offense to be. And some
- 4:20Speaker 1: people kind of get scared when they hear balance. They think, oh, man,
- 4:22Speaker 1: they're just going to run the football or they're just
- 4:24Speaker 1: going to pass the rock. What does balance mean to you? Yeah?
- 4:28Speaker 1: To me, balance is just making sure you're distributing the field, uh,
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, horizontally, vertically, Uh, making that defense defend every
- 4:36Speaker 1: blade of grass. And So in my mind, and I
- 4:38Speaker 1: had referred to this before because there is that I
- 4:41Speaker 1: guess that connotation and maybe balance means y'all that's that
- 4:44Speaker 1: sounds you know, kind of boring, and but I think
- 4:47Speaker 1: that that doesn't mean conservative. Balance just means that we
- 4:49Speaker 1: want to be able to utilize every everyone's skill set
- 4:52Speaker 1: within the within the system. And like I said, it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: you know, it's a players league, right, and so it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: about finding out what the players can do and how
- 5:00Speaker 1: how do they fit within you know, that system, and
- 5:02Speaker 1: then how do we create that great, fundamentally sound atmosphere
- 5:06Speaker 1: where where they can maximize their ability and just go
- 5:08Speaker 1: out and play. So you haven't called games on a
- 5:12Speaker 1: live game a Sunday. I think you've done preseason games,
- 5:14Speaker 1: You've done some scrimmages. How excited are you? Man? I
- 5:17Speaker 1: see I coached high school ball and I called plays
- 5:19Speaker 1: in high school, and I was jacked up. I could imagine, Man,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you're really excited for this opportunity to call some plays.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I am, you know, you know, different stops along the way,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I've had different opportunities, but nothing like a real Sunday
- 5:31Speaker 1: call in the game. And so it's one of those
- 5:33Speaker 1: things like I've been preparing my whole life for this opportunity.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So it's one of those opportunities that now I was
- 5:38Speaker 1: right there in front of me, and I can't wait
- 5:40Speaker 1: for it. I know it takes a lot of people
- 5:42Speaker 1: around me to help, and it's a it's a team
- 5:44Speaker 1: effort in that regard, But you know, I think I
- 5:47Speaker 1: couldn't be more excited for that challenge. And trust me,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I understand what a big challenge it is. And I'm
- 5:52Speaker 1: totally appreciative of it, and but I'm ready to go
- 5:54Speaker 1: attack that thing. Man. I heard you talking your presser
- 5:57Speaker 1: and you said, um, you seem open minded about your
- 6:00Speaker 1: approach when it comes to offense. Like you look at
- 6:01Speaker 1: college games, you look at high school games. How often
- 6:05Speaker 1: do you watch a game and jot a note down,
- 6:07Speaker 1: like you know what, I might want to try that
- 6:08Speaker 1: this week? Oh yeah, you know, I think I think
- 6:12Speaker 1: every coach has that little uh, that notebook or that
- 6:15Speaker 1: that file somewhere where they've got everything jotted down, or
- 6:17Speaker 1: they've got this uh kind of running cut up from
- 6:20Speaker 1: around the league or around football that that you want
- 6:22Speaker 1: to have in that in that archive. And to me,
- 6:24Speaker 1: the important part about that is really always keeping a
- 6:27Speaker 1: pulse of what's going on around football. Whether it's uh,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know, any level, doesn't really matter because there's great,
- 6:32Speaker 1: great ideas at every level of football, you know, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: having the pulse of that, but then also making sure
- 6:36Speaker 1: you're you're cognizant of how it fits into into the
- 6:39Speaker 1: guys you have, into the scheme that you have. So
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's not just you know, picking out a shining and
- 6:44Speaker 1: your toy. It's putting a lot of thought into it
- 6:45Speaker 1: and seeing how it how it fits with with everything
- 6:48Speaker 1: that we're doing as well. You got Russell Wilson, future
- 6:52Speaker 1: Hall of Famer quarterback, you're gonna be calling plays for.
- 6:55Speaker 1: What's that relationship been like so far? He's been great.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You know, we've had a chance to kind of get
- 7:00Speaker 1: to know each other, you know, just that as people,
- 7:03Speaker 1: you know, and and you know, it's a it's a
- 7:05Speaker 1: different time where you know, with with FaceTime or with
- 7:09Speaker 1: phone calls. But I think everyone's really adjusted and adapted
- 7:12Speaker 1: to that, and that's you know, the right thing and
- 7:14Speaker 1: the right approach right now and and uh for him,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and I think it's just about developing that relationship where
- 7:20Speaker 1: we know each other as people, because when the football
- 7:23Speaker 1: gets going, you know, the football is always going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: be that competitive challenge and like anything else in this game,
- 7:29Speaker 1: there's gonna be ups and downs and and you know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: highs and lows, and being able to have that good
- 7:34Speaker 1: balance and that good relationship that we've built from now
- 7:38Speaker 1: till the time we actually do get to get on
- 7:39Speaker 1: the grass. I think it's just a huge part of
- 7:42Speaker 1: that foundation so that we can work together and and
- 7:45Speaker 1: be able to work through and and always be able
- 7:47Speaker 1: to talk through everything that comes up throughout the game
- 7:49Speaker 1: of football. All right, Now, I'm from California myself, West
- 7:53Speaker 1: La Culver City. You might be familiar down there. Oh yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you're you're coming up to the Northwest. Well a little different.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I know you're from the Northwest. Is your your wife
- 8:02Speaker 1: is a family? Are they ready for that change? You know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: they're they're ready. We got we got some of these
- 8:06Speaker 1: uh you know, rain boots, and you know it rains
- 8:08Speaker 1: in California and you might as well. It's like nat
- 8:10Speaker 1: it's a statewide news on on on the weather channel there.
- 8:14Speaker 1: But uh no, it's it's good. Uh it was. It
- 8:16Speaker 1: was nice seventy this morning when I went off for
- 8:18Speaker 1: a little a little quick walk after I dropped the
- 8:20Speaker 1: kids off. But you know, I think, uh, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 1: that area up there is so beautiful. I've had a
- 8:25Speaker 1: chance obviously growing up in just outside of Portland, I
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know, used to go up to Seattle. We go
- 8:30Speaker 1: up and see uh you know, go up to the
- 8:31Speaker 1: Kingdome and watch h Griffy dropping some bombs you know
- 8:35Speaker 1: out there, and Buna and those guys, and so you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I've had I've had my experience up there. I love
- 8:40Speaker 1: the area. You know, my wife's originally from Massachusetts, so
- 8:43Speaker 1: she's uh, she's been a you know, she's been a
- 8:46Speaker 1: cold weather girl before, so she's all she's all good
- 8:48Speaker 1: with this. And and my kids think we're moving there.
- 8:51Speaker 1: They just think we can just throw everything in the
- 8:52Speaker 1: car and drive up there tonight, so they're good to
- 8:55Speaker 1: go too. Hey man, well, I'm glad your prep want
- 8:59Speaker 1: these prep the it's ready to go. The twelves are
- 9:01Speaker 1: happy to have you. I appreciate you taking time out
- 9:04Speaker 1: of your day. I know you're moving and packing it
