- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi friends, Megan and Wendy Here and in honor of
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hallmark airing The Chicken Sisters on Hallmark Channel, we are
- 0:06Speaker 1: re airing our original reviews and recaps of these episodes
- 0:11Speaker 1: that were originally recorded back in September and October of
- 0:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. So enjoy The Chicken Sisters and enjoy
- 0:19Speaker 1: these recaps and reviews. This is a Bramble Jam podcast.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:46Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark movie fan. I'm Wendy.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm a former Homewark hater. Today we're discussing The Chicken
- 0:52Speaker 1: Sisters episode two, maybe titled I Walk the Line, streaming
- 0:57Speaker 1: exclusively on Hallmark Plus. There is a disparity between what
- 1:02Speaker 1: IMDb is calling these episodes and how they are listed
- 1:05Speaker 1: on Hallmark Plus. So last week we said episode one
- 1:09Speaker 1: was called Family is Family and this episode is I
- 1:12Speaker 1: Walk the Line. If you look at Hallmark Plus, episode
- 1:15Speaker 1: one was Welcome to Merrinac, y'all, and episode two is
- 1:18Speaker 1: We're on the same team, y'all. Wendy, notice that disparity.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Are they gonna keep that ye y'all y'all thing? From
- 1:26Speaker 1: episode to episode, right? Is this like a like a
- 1:29Speaker 1: friend's the one where they situation, you know, they name
- 1:33Speaker 1: them and they're like, no, we need something to tie
- 1:35Speaker 1: it in. We got to go back to the way
- 1:36Speaker 1: home where everything's a song title. What's going to be
- 1:38Speaker 1: our thing? Apparently y'all's their thing. Okay, we shall say
- 1:44Speaker 1: quick housekeeping. If you want to hang out with us
- 1:47Speaker 1: outside the podcast, please follow us on Instagram, where we
- 1:49Speaker 1: have not one, but two Instagram accounts. We are Girls
- 1:53Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark for All Things Homemark and we are Megan
- 1:55Speaker 1: and Wendy. You don't understand the joy I feel when
- 1:59Speaker 1: I see someone who I recognize as a follower on
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Girl's Gone Hamewark account is also a follower on
- 2:06Speaker 1: the Megan and Wendy account. Does that bring you joys?
- 2:08Speaker 1: It does? Yeah? Yeah, sure does. Hey. We have a
- 2:14Speaker 1: Facebook group. It's for listeners of the podcast and Hallmark
- 2:19Speaker 1: fans in general. It is called Girls Gone Hamewark. As
- 2:23Speaker 1: the words are coming out of my mouth, I'm thinking
- 2:26Speaker 1: not a lot of people are talking about this show
- 2:29Speaker 1: and in our group. No. I do think homework plus
- 2:33Speaker 1: is a little bit of a barrier for some people,
- 2:35Speaker 1: just based on the response in the group to the
- 2:39Speaker 1: additional streaming service. And I think it will be interesting
- 2:44Speaker 1: to see and I don't know how much we'll know,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but I'm very curious how it's performing based on Homewark's projection,
- 2:51Speaker 1: because this is a little bit of an experiment they're doing,
- 2:55Speaker 1: launching a service with all of this exclusive content. They
- 2:57Speaker 1: did occasionally have a direct to streaming movie like Christmas
- 3:03Speaker 1: in July countdown to Christmas in that situation. Mm hm.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But we this is new. We're never gonna know the details.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We'll never know the numbers. No, No, I agree, we
- 3:14Speaker 1: won't ever know the numbers. I mean, because it's like
- 3:16Speaker 1: Netflix doesn't really right and Lisa Daily Hamilton switch it around.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Lisa Hamilton Daily came from Netflix. She's not gonna share
- 3:28Speaker 1: the secrets. No, of course not. It will be interesting
- 3:31Speaker 1: to see if this comes to linear programming quicklier than
- 3:33Speaker 1: we imagined it might have. I if it does, it
- 3:37Speaker 1: it won't be until after the first of the year.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I mean for sure. Definitely sometimes in the in this
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the season they need it in March, after The
- 3:46Speaker 1: Way Home is concluded. Yeah, yeah, exactly. If you have
- 3:50Speaker 1: thoughts on the Chicken Sisters and want to share them
- 3:53Speaker 1: with us, you can always email us Girls Gone Homemark
- 3:56Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. I'm just noodling over this in
- 4:01Speaker 1: my head. I actually think the ideal release time for
- 4:05Speaker 1: this series on linear programming would be summer twenty twenty
- 4:08Speaker 1: five because you'll have The Way Home and then you'll
- 4:10Speaker 1: have the new season of One Calls the Heart. Then
- 4:12Speaker 1: you could air this and if History repeats itself, the
- 4:16Speaker 1: new season begins in September, so you're can people up
- 4:19Speaker 1: the season ends, then they got to subscribe to get
- 4:22Speaker 1: the new season or they have to wait an entire year.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Guys Hire, Megan, that's my that's my prediction. We have
- 4:28Speaker 1: been talking off Mike about Hallmark Plus. Yeah, I know
- 4:33Speaker 1: this isn't in our rundown of things we're gonna talk about.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I can pivot. We were talking about their drop dates
- 4:39Speaker 1: and how they are a little bit frustrating. It's just
- 4:44Speaker 1: Thursday heavy. Everything drops on Thursdays, yes, but so if
- 4:49Speaker 1: you don't have Hallmark Plus. What they're doing is they
- 4:51Speaker 1: drop every new episode and new movies on Thursdays like everything,
- 4:56Speaker 1: And as of right now, that means Chicken Sisters, The
- 4:58Speaker 1: Jane Mysteries, and Love on the Danube. New episodes and
- 5:01Speaker 1: new movies are dropping on Thursday, so it's three things,
- 5:04Speaker 1: but there are six other days of the week. It's
- 5:07Speaker 1: hard as a Hallmark movie review podcast to actually consume
- 5:11Speaker 1: all that entertainment over the span of a weekend. And
- 5:15Speaker 1: here we are, we're recording this on Monday. For me,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it would be way easier if they were dropping it earlier.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I just wonder if it's like the pivot from this
- 5:23Speaker 1: is an audience of people who look forward to new
- 5:25Speaker 1: weekend content. They're used to new Friday and Saturday content,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and so now we're just extending the weekend a little bit.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But I think we need to pivot to the behavior
- 5:33Speaker 1: of a streamer, which is like I need something to
- 5:35Speaker 1: watch on Monday night when I sit down with my
- 5:37Speaker 1: TV to disassociate after a long day at work. I
- 5:40Speaker 1: also wish that they would drop multiple episodes instead of
- 5:45Speaker 1: just one. That's the behavior of a streamer to binge watch.
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know, Apple TV drops, they do persodically wholudaus to
- 5:55Speaker 1: They'll drop like one or two at a time. And
- 5:57Speaker 1: even Netflix has been toying around with drop being like
- 6:00Speaker 1: the first half of a season and the second half
- 6:02Speaker 1: of the season. They just did that with Emily in Paris,
- 6:05Speaker 1: so that they drag it out. That's also done so
- 6:08Speaker 1: that people have to pay for a second month of streaming. Sure,
- 6:12Speaker 1: I mean, I know there's a rhyme and reason behind
- 6:14Speaker 1: all of it, but I'm honestly glad they didn't drop
- 6:17Speaker 1: the whole thing. From our reviewing standpoint, I don't even
- 6:20Speaker 1: think we could have readma I would literally be like
- 6:22Speaker 1: a cartoon in Quicksand with a white platt. All right,
- 6:27Speaker 1: so let's talk about episode two. Let's do it. Whatever
- 6:30Speaker 1: the title is, it's either I walk the line or
- 6:32Speaker 1: we're on the same team, y'all. Here's the synopsis. As
- 6:36Speaker 1: Kitchen Clash begins filming, tensions between Frannie's and Mimi's and
- 6:42Speaker 1: sisters Amanda and May and their mother Gus are running high. Wow,
- 6:48Speaker 1: that's a lot. Tensions are running high with every party involved. Indeed,
- 6:56Speaker 1: this the stars Skyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Leah Thompson, and
- 7:02Speaker 1: Wendy Malick, who has appeared on All My movie. We
- 7:06Speaker 1: did issue a correction the very next day on our
- 7:08Speaker 1: episode of Loving the Danube. But if you're only looking
- 7:11Speaker 1: listening to Chicken sister's content. We heard you loud and clear.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I did make a mistake in last week's news and notes.
- 7:16Speaker 1: We are aware that Wendy Malick, of her many many credits,
- 7:19Speaker 1: does include several appearances on the Hallmark Channel. Our deepest
- 7:22Speaker 1: apologies to Wendy Malick and her resume. You've been really
- 7:27Speaker 1: carrying this on your shoulders for a whole week having
- 7:30Speaker 1: to you we have when I tell you, people have
- 7:33Speaker 1: contacted us via every medium Instagram, DM email, YouTube comment,
- 7:38Speaker 1: pleacebook comment. I'm like, they're gonna knock out my front
- 7:41Speaker 1: door next. It's like Harry Potter. This isn't a reference.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You're gonna understand. But when she's talking to me about
- 7:49Speaker 1: the Harry Potter reference because I don't know anything, go ahead. Yes,
- 7:52Speaker 1: When his uncle throws away the Hogwarts letter and continues
- 7:57Speaker 1: to throw them away, those owls are gonna find their
- 7:59Speaker 1: way in, and they're like shooting through the fireplace. That's
- 8:02Speaker 1: how I felt about these comments. I actually do appreciate
- 8:05Speaker 1: when people reach out with information that we didn't know.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I just felt badly about myself for the mistake. It's
- 8:11Speaker 1: a fine Malec. We'd love to have you on the show.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Our format for these episodes is a little bit different
- 8:18Speaker 1: than our movies or movie reviews. So what we're gonna
- 8:21Speaker 1: do first is talk news and notes. Last week we
- 8:24Speaker 1: ran through a good portion of the cast, but it
- 8:27Speaker 1: is a pretty big cast, so don't worry. We didn't
- 8:30Speaker 1: forget about the rest of them. We're gonna jump right
- 8:32Speaker 1: in with James Cott, who plays Frank Junior. James has
- 8:35Speaker 1: thirty one acting credits, and most recently those credits include
- 8:38Speaker 1: Virgin River, Christmas on Cherry Lane, and one Calls the Heart.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I don't remember him from Christmas on Cherry Lane. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: think I do remember him. I think he was like
- 8:50Speaker 1: the young dad who was the police officer who died.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I could be wrong by James Jake Foy, please can
- 9:00Speaker 1: if Hey, we first met Jake when he played Tough
- 9:02Speaker 1: McMurray on the one season Wonder Ride. We're glad to
- 9:06Speaker 1: have him back on Hallmark. I think he's very good.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Other roles in his twenty two credits include Designated Survivor,
- 9:13Speaker 1: A Little Daytime Drama, Wilderness, and Allegiance. I'm a little
- 9:18Speaker 1: bit shocked that you use the expression one season lounder,
- 9:21Speaker 1: because you notice that exact phrase appears later in these
- 9:23Speaker 1: very same notes, Cardi Wong plays Jen. Cardi has fifty
- 9:27Speaker 1: four acting credits, including his role on Tip Line Mysteries
- 9:29Speaker 1: Dial One for Murder. His other Hallmark appearances include Flip
- 9:33Speaker 1: That Romance, One Winter Proposal, My Best Friend's Bouquet, and
- 9:36Speaker 1: The Crossword Mysteries I Loved Cardi Wong and Tipline Mysteries.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He was really good. I like to see a second
- 9:43Speaker 1: movie in that franchise. Ekdor Rivera plays Sergio. He's the
- 9:51Speaker 1: He's the cook. They call him the cook, the hot chess,
- 9:54Speaker 1: not even chef. He is the cook. It's the vibe
- 9:57Speaker 1: of Mimei's they got a fry cook. Yes. This is
- 10:00Speaker 1: his thirteenth acting credit and his third appearance on Hallmark,
- 10:03Speaker 1: having previously appeared in ground Swell The Lacy Shreber Joint.
- 10:09Speaker 1: He also had a role in the thriller Startup, which
- 10:14Speaker 1: is streaming on Crackle. Look if listeners here don't have
- 10:19Speaker 1: Homer and plus they surely don't have Crackle, but crackles free.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Oh okay, I know your husband watches Crackle a lot.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Right to get his old TV toob is the source
- 10:27Speaker 1: of old television BT doves. If you like old shows
- 10:30Speaker 1: toob is free, lots of ads. Archie Candola plays cameraman Gordo.
- 10:37Speaker 1: He's currently appearing in the Hulu series How To Die Alone, which,
- 10:41Speaker 1: by the way, just strolling through his credits, maybe want
- 10:44Speaker 1: to watch that. That is another series that is dropping
- 10:46Speaker 1: episodically on Hulu. His twenty five credits also include Our
- 10:50Speaker 1: Big Punjabi Family Upload and the one season Wonder I
- 10:54Speaker 1: Wish Everyone would watch No Tomorrow available on Netflix. Y'all.
- 10:58Speaker 1: It's like ten or twelve episodes. It's so good. It's
- 11:02Speaker 1: sci fi. I'm out, it's barely sci fi. It's a
- 11:05Speaker 1: guy who believes the world is ending, but there's that.
- 11:07Speaker 1: He doesn't like time travel. He just thinks the world
- 11:10Speaker 1: is ending. The world doesn't end. Sameir Salem plays Jay.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He has a total of thirty three acting credits, mostly
- 11:17Speaker 1: trending toward grittier fair. He did appear in one episode
- 11:21Speaker 1: of Hudson and Rex and also has appeared in Yellow Jackets,
- 11:26Speaker 1: The Handmaid's Tail, and The Good Doctor. Andrew J. Hampton
- 11:30Speaker 1: plays Kenneth's husband, hat Trick. Andrew's first full length feature
- 11:34Speaker 1: was in Greece Live, where he had an uncredited role.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Since then, He has appeared in Atypical, The Flash So
- 11:40Speaker 1: helped Me Todd, Blockbuster, Dream Moms, and Upload for a
- 11:43Speaker 1: total of fifteen acting credits. Funny with the Upload crossover
- 11:46Speaker 1: here mentioned more than once. Kimmy Gatewood and Annie Meeba
- 11:51Speaker 1: return as director and writer, respectively. Let's take a quick
- 11:55Speaker 1: break and we'll come right back with more Chicken Sisters.
- 12:05Speaker 1: All right, so this is episode two and we are
- 12:09Speaker 1: gonna run down kind of the key events in this episode.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Do you have like an overall feeling about this episode
- 12:16Speaker 1: compared to episode one. I hate to say it, but
- 12:19Speaker 1: I didn't like it as much as I liked the pilot.
- 12:23Speaker 1: The pilot to me, was snappy, It was filled with
- 12:27Speaker 1: one liners. It was real funny. I think maybe now
- 12:34Speaker 1: we gotta tell the story right. The pilot was like
- 12:36Speaker 1: had such a heavy burden on it to introduce all
- 12:39Speaker 1: these characters, introduce the story, and now we gotta like
- 12:42Speaker 1: take it back, y'all and slow it down and just
- 12:46Speaker 1: tell the story. I agree with you, but I also
- 12:50Speaker 1: think did episode two get hollmarkified a little bit? Oh?
- 12:55Speaker 1: Because if you listen to our episode one review, I
- 13:00Speaker 1: went through a list of things that they said, words,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I've never heard on Hallmark before. This episode completely lacked
- 13:06Speaker 1: any of that kind of verbiage. I mean, yes, but
- 13:13Speaker 1: the behavior. I mean they address miscarriage, which isn't something
- 13:15Speaker 1: we use. Yes, yes, we got teens breaking the law.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Let's talk about how this movie start. This episode has
- 13:25Speaker 1: kind of an overarching theme of what it means to
- 13:28Speaker 1: be a Franny's girl, particularly from Nancy's perspective, and how
- 13:32Speaker 1: Nancy always wanted to be a Franny's girl. A Franny's
- 13:35Speaker 1: girl is a good girl and a meanie's girl is
- 13:39Speaker 1: from the wrong side of the tracks, basically. And I
- 13:42Speaker 1: like that they set this up this way because then
- 13:45Speaker 1: you clearly see that there's a lot of factors at
- 13:49Speaker 1: play here. It could be like socioeconomic factor wrong side
- 13:53Speaker 1: of the tracks, like who's who has more, who has less?
- 13:58Speaker 1: I like that they divided that, and there's like some
- 14:05Speaker 1: meat to it, and there's almost to me, it felt
- 14:08Speaker 1: like a little bit of an acknowledgment of the sacrifices
- 14:11Speaker 1: that Nancy had to make in order to be a
- 14:14Speaker 1: Franny's Girl, although not called out by name, to me,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it felt like there was some jealousy towards maybe the
- 14:21Speaker 1: freedom that the quote Mimi's Girl had. Sure, I assume
- 14:25Speaker 1: that girl playing cornhole is Gus young Gus just drinking
- 14:30Speaker 1: a beer and playing with the guys. And although Nancy
- 14:33Speaker 1: in that scene is walking with her husband or future husband,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and she has what she wanted, there's also this other
- 14:40Speaker 1: side where she's like, look at how fun that is too? Yeah?
- 14:45Speaker 1: The grass is always greener, right, Well, I will say that,
- 14:49Speaker 1: I you know, I think Nancy is a very unifying
- 14:54Speaker 1: force in this story, and I think introducing her as
- 14:58Speaker 1: someone who, as opposed to Gus is angry, Gus does
- 15:03Speaker 1: not share that. I can understand the Franny's Girl and
- 15:07Speaker 1: the Memi's Girl feeling. She's like, oh, those are the
- 15:09Speaker 1: Memi's people are bad, and Nancy is more like I
- 15:14Speaker 1: wanted to be a Franny's Girl. But I can see
- 15:16Speaker 1: the appeal of being a Memi's girl. I'm getting a
- 15:19Speaker 1: lot of like the outsiders vibe, you remember, like the
- 15:22Speaker 1: socias and the the greasers. That's my favorite grade. Oh
- 15:27Speaker 1: really yeah, and especially of the time too, because that,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I would guess would be like the timeframe that these
- 15:35Speaker 1: teenagers were growing up in was very much like them
- 15:39Speaker 1: and us. Sure, I felt bad for Nancy being like
- 15:45Speaker 1: the woman behind the man and like just pouring her
- 15:49Speaker 1: whole everything into who he was and to become very
- 15:57Speaker 1: much a shadow of him. I just and I always
- 16:03Speaker 1: try to relate to my own life, and I have
- 16:05Speaker 1: a teenage daughter, and there is no way I would
- 16:07Speaker 1: want her to live that life. You know, it's interesting
- 16:10Speaker 1: because she feels really lost. The narrator says, like, when
- 16:14Speaker 1: your entire identities being a wife and a mom, what
- 16:16Speaker 1: happens when you're no longer those things? Right? And when
- 16:20Speaker 1: you watch this this story starts, we don't have a
- 16:23Speaker 1: Frank in the picture. He's passed. Nancy seems like she's
- 16:28Speaker 1: running the show, but she feels like, no, I've just
- 16:32Speaker 1: taken Frank's place, Like this isn't my place. I'm just
- 16:35Speaker 1: filling in a hole that was left behind. And what's
- 16:39Speaker 1: also really hard to watch is the rate the way
- 16:41Speaker 1: Frank Junior treats her. Agree, And the narrator makes a
- 16:45Speaker 1: comment like you could see why she would allow that,
- 16:47Speaker 1: But to me, I'm like, I understand that she was heartbroken.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Frank Junior was her one and only child. She struggled
- 16:54Speaker 1: with fertility and with pregnancy loss, and that's heartbreaking, and
- 16:57Speaker 1: I love that they're giving us that storyline. But to me,
- 16:59Speaker 1: I'm like, just because you've got this one kid who sucks,
- 17:04Speaker 1: She's just like, please love me, Please give back to
- 17:08Speaker 1: me what I've given to you, Like, please let me
- 17:10Speaker 1: have fulfillment in being your mom. And he's just so unhappy.
- 17:15Speaker 1: What is funny is I wonder if did Frank Senior
- 17:22Speaker 1: treat her that way too, Like was that behavior modeled
- 17:25Speaker 1: for Frank Junior or does Frank Junior just suck in general?
- 17:29Speaker 1: He surely doesn't treat his wife that well either. I
- 17:31Speaker 1: will say in the book, we do learn some stuff
- 17:34Speaker 1: about the Franks. Well, I hope that's coming because there
- 17:38Speaker 1: does need to be a little context for those characters.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Let's talk about Sabrina. I love Sabrina. We learn a
- 17:45Speaker 1: lot about her, and we have a little bit of
- 17:48Speaker 1: a moment where she and May reconnect. And what I
- 17:51Speaker 1: love is the Amanda's looking on and she's seeing this moment.
- 17:56Speaker 1: She's like, oh, they're friends and Sergio seph and he's like,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I'm sure it's fine, great for me because I'm te
- 18:00Speaker 1: Mimi's right. But we very quickly learned that Sabrina is
- 18:04Speaker 1: the master of making you believe one thing and acting
- 18:07Speaker 1: another way, like she's a real sneaky snake. She's gonna
- 18:10Speaker 1: get the shot at whatever the cost, and so she's
- 18:17Speaker 1: letting May believe like things are all good while telling
- 18:19Speaker 1: Amanda like, oh no, we are not good friends, we've
- 18:24Speaker 1: worked together, and trying to worm her way in with Amanda.
- 18:28Speaker 1: And then she's kind of her cameraman filming this conversation
- 18:31Speaker 1: she has, yeah, and she gets Amanda to accidentally spill
- 18:35Speaker 1: about donkeys, which to me, I'm like, that's Hooters right
- 18:38Speaker 1: for sure, because Sabrina is like the butt restaurant because
- 18:42Speaker 1: they couldn't make it the boobs restaurant. What is significant
- 18:48Speaker 1: we learn about Sabrina? Obviously May knows what's up. May
- 18:52Speaker 1: tells Amanda at the end she will make you believe
- 18:54Speaker 1: that she's your friend, and you see it on Amanda's face.
- 18:57Speaker 1: She's like, oh shit, I've already fallen for it. Okay,
- 19:02Speaker 1: you see it on Amanda's face, But the narrator says
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's too late for Amanda. My question is do you
- 19:09Speaker 1: think Amanda believes May in that moment, Like is she
- 19:14Speaker 1: inclined to believe or is she just like May doesn't
- 19:17Speaker 1: want good things for me. I think Amanda in May's
- 19:21Speaker 1: relationship is real complicated, and it's not made better by
- 19:24Speaker 1: the fact that May comes in and she's like, got
- 19:27Speaker 1: her I've been on TV energy and is trying to
- 19:29Speaker 1: tell everyone. I actually think it's really smart from an
- 19:32Speaker 1: outsider's perspective. She's like, no, y'all need media training. You
- 19:35Speaker 1: need to know that Sabrina will do what she's gonna
- 19:38Speaker 1: do to get the shot. But Amanda doesn't want to
- 19:41Speaker 1: listen to her, and it also creates all this conflict.
- 19:44Speaker 1: You see Gus and Nancy that's won't even face She's
- 19:47Speaker 1: got her back to the entire group when they're having
- 19:50Speaker 1: their media training moment. So like, why does Gus have
- 19:54Speaker 1: beef with Nancy? Well, they haven't given it to us yet,
- 19:58Speaker 1: but you know because of the book, in the book
- 20:00Speaker 1: reasoning Why, But it's less Nancy and more like the
- 20:04Speaker 1: legacy of Franny's and the Franny's versus Mimi's of it all.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I am curious to see how they handle it in
- 20:10Speaker 1: the show and see if it's the same. But there's
- 20:13Speaker 1: just a long history of Gus feels like she hasn't
- 20:17Speaker 1: gotten what she's deserved. Got it? Got it? I mean
- 20:20Speaker 1: in the story, as we're told, right, it's that Mimi's
- 20:25Speaker 1: husband cheated with Franny, right, and so there's this long
- 20:29Speaker 1: standing beat. But there's got any more there. There's gotta
- 20:33Speaker 1: be more there there from my small town. Maybe Gus
- 20:38Speaker 1: was interested in Frank at some point, who knows. Whatever,
- 20:41Speaker 1: that's what it was. Okay, let's talk about Kenneth. Yes,
- 20:47Speaker 1: Jake Foy. I'm so glad to see Jake Foy back
- 20:49Speaker 1: on Hallmark. By the way, He's very likable, super likable.
- 20:53Speaker 1: He was one of my favorite parts about Ride. Even
- 20:55Speaker 1: though that show was not that great. You liked it
- 20:58Speaker 1: a lot less than I did. I found it washable
- 21:00Speaker 1: but forgettable. But I'm real happy to have Jake Foyd back.
- 21:04Speaker 1: He plays and I like his story, like he the
- 21:07Speaker 1: throwback is like he and May both were like got
- 21:10Speaker 1: to get the heck out of town, and he came
- 21:12Speaker 1: back because his mom was sick and settled, and he
- 21:17Speaker 1: is in this position where he's like I can see
- 21:21Speaker 1: the value in like giving back and building up and
- 21:25Speaker 1: being the change in this town, Like look at all
- 21:27Speaker 1: the things that I've done here, look at the people here.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And she's still very like I can't believe you're here, right,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I don't believe like you're friends with my mom. Mm
- 21:34Speaker 1: And he's like, well, yeah, she's been pretty great to me. Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I think, well May needs a person in her life.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So I think it's a good character introduction. I like
- 21:46Speaker 1: that he is her friend, but he's also like gonna
- 21:49Speaker 1: call her on her bullshit. Yeah, yeah, me too. Like that.
- 21:51Speaker 1: She says something about like everybody in this town sucks,
- 21:53Speaker 1: like there's nothing good to ever come out of this town.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And he's like that, oh, like that's when he leaves.
- 21:59Speaker 1: He bails. He's like, I'm not stupid restaurant overnight. Yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 1: like I had a coffee shop and an inter run
- 22:05Speaker 1: in this small town. I don't have time for your bullshit.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, no, that's good. And then to your point
- 22:11Speaker 1: about the hallmarkification of this episode, she does get drunk
- 22:14Speaker 1: and just slap paint over the chicken sign. Okay, fine,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just being difficult. I
- 22:20Speaker 1: just think they turned the homemarkified dial a little maybe
- 22:24Speaker 1: a little bit mm hm. Lots of questions about the
- 22:28Speaker 1: character of Jen, played by Cardi Wong. Yeah, so I
- 22:31Speaker 1: was wrong. I suspected last week that he was Kenneth's
- 22:35Speaker 1: husband Patrick. That is incorrect. That's played by the actor
- 22:38Speaker 1: Andrew J. Hampton. I mentioned that there's some information that
- 22:43Speaker 1: we have about Gusts from the book that I don't
- 22:45Speaker 1: know if that'll be introduced here. We think he's potentially
- 22:49Speaker 1: her therapist, some sort of in that role somehow, And
- 22:53Speaker 1: I think they're still trying to like, maybe they're having
- 22:56Speaker 1: an affair, but they're not having an affair. They're trying
- 22:59Speaker 1: to mislead sure viewers. Yeah, that's something salacious is happening.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I agree with you definitely. Post first episode, I was like,
- 23:08Speaker 1: what's going on between these two? They were fooling around
- 23:11Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah blah. But now, yeah, I see
- 23:14Speaker 1: that's not the case. Maybe if you're just watching this
- 23:17Speaker 1: as a casual viewer and not trying to really figure
- 23:20Speaker 1: out like who everybody is and all the players in
- 23:21Speaker 1: the game, then you don't question like I also think
- 23:26Speaker 1: this is one of the reasons I have really mixed
- 23:28Speaker 1: feelings about reading the book before I see a movie
- 23:31Speaker 1: or TV adaptation of it. Typically, I'm like, you got
- 23:33Speaker 1: to read the book first, But then I spend the
- 23:35Speaker 1: entire time going wait did that happen? The book? Wait
- 23:38Speaker 1: did that happen? And my memory for things that I
- 23:40Speaker 1: read is like a goldfish, so I don't remember things
- 23:43Speaker 1: very long. So sometimes I prefer not to have read
- 23:48Speaker 1: the book, and I can't, but I can't help myself.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I know things about the book, so I'm trying to compare.
- 23:53Speaker 1: One thing we didn't talk about is in the book,
- 23:55Speaker 1: And maybe this will be the last time I say that.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Today May is married with two children. Are married. I
- 24:01Speaker 1: think the reason that they've made them engage is because
- 24:03Speaker 1: it doesn't make sense. In the book, her husband doesn't
- 24:07Speaker 1: know her mom, Like maybe they met at her wedding,
- 24:09Speaker 1: but he's never been to her hometown. It's completely shocked
- 24:12Speaker 1: by this state of things, like she has kept all
- 24:15Speaker 1: of this from him, And I think that's harder to
- 24:18Speaker 1: believe when you're married with two children than just engaged.
- 24:21Speaker 1: This guy doesn't know the ins and outs of your family.
- 24:24Speaker 1: In the book, does May return home with the husband
- 24:27Speaker 1: and the two kids? No, she returns home with the children. Oh. Interesting,
- 24:33Speaker 1: it's the same situation. Like she gets fired and he's like, cool,
- 24:36Speaker 1: now we can take time off and travel the world
- 24:38Speaker 1: and she's like, peace, I'm going home to be on
- 24:41Speaker 1: another show, and she takes the children. Got it. Finally
- 24:45Speaker 1: we have little Lindsay Sabrina's daughter, yes, who is a
- 24:50Speaker 1: challenging teenager, aren't they all? You know, it's funny. She's
- 24:54Speaker 1: just so over small town Marynac and poor Frankie's just
- 24:58Speaker 1: like trying to be a good friend and and she's like,
- 25:01Speaker 1: we got fun stuff here. But I love when Frankie
- 25:03Speaker 1: was like kind of over her. When Lindsay's like, do
- 25:07Speaker 1: y'all have a bodega? And she's like, we got a
- 25:09Speaker 1: stop and shop? And she goes, what's that? She's like,
- 25:11Speaker 1: it's a bodega. I mean they didn't fall off the
- 25:13Speaker 1: turnip truck. Like a stop and shop sounds like any
- 25:17Speaker 1: gas station market that you would go to. Now seriously,
- 25:21Speaker 1: I mean from New York City. I don't know where
- 25:24Speaker 1: I pulled back the brge on, but it's like the
- 25:27Speaker 1: same kind of thing, and the parallel is kind of
- 25:29Speaker 1: similar if you think about it. We have at the beginning,
- 25:32Speaker 1: you know, Nancy and Gus from two different sides, right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and now we have Lindsay and Frankie. They are from
- 25:39Speaker 1: two different worlds as well. Y, yes, great, but I
- 25:42Speaker 1: mean currently teenagers are pretty with it. She's on TikTok, yeah,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and she's seen the world outside of her little New
- 25:51Speaker 1: York window, and it's pretty funny to think, like, I mean,
- 25:55Speaker 1: obviously we live here in southern California, Like when I
- 26:00Speaker 1: see teenagers like, like I said, like, they're pretty with
- 26:03Speaker 1: it here. We have this teenager in Marynac who doesn't
- 26:08Speaker 1: seem very worldly. I don't think that's not unusual. It
- 26:15Speaker 1: is to me just because of where I'm from, you
- 26:19Speaker 1: know what I mean, when we're going to middle school.
- 26:22Speaker 1: My best friend moved to Sylum Springs, Arkansas our freshman
- 26:27Speaker 1: year of high school, and she was like, there's nothing
- 26:30Speaker 1: to do here. People drink like that's all they do,
- 26:33Speaker 1: Like they go to the football game and then they
- 26:36Speaker 1: go get drunks too. Yes, okay, Well, then if we're
- 26:43Speaker 1: applying that scenario to this, like Frankie seemed like she
- 26:47Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, we but never like well,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm just saying yeah, but Frankie seems like she's like
- 26:53Speaker 1: I got big plans, like I'm going to college. Oh well,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I will say in regards to like when she's like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I got big plans. I'm gonna go to New York
- 27:00Speaker 1: and Broadway and whatever. I thought. Lindsay was a real bitch. Yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: she was like, oh, you're not getting in. That was
- 27:05Speaker 1: so me. Yes, shut up, Lindsay, what are you doing?
- 27:10Speaker 1: What are you doing? Lindsay looking for the next rave.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Let's talk some clukworthy moments. My favorite scene is when
- 27:18Speaker 1: and we are already mentioned it, but when Amanda mistakenly
- 27:21Speaker 1: tells Sabrina that May worked at Donkey's. Sabrina's reaction was incredible.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I thought, I mean, I know, we're not supposed to
- 27:29Speaker 1: like Sabrina, but it was so funny to me. She
- 27:34Speaker 1: was like just spouts off about like deep fried kso
- 27:39Speaker 1: to tourists, it was it was good. I know we're
- 27:42Speaker 1: not supposed to like Sabrina as a person, but as
- 27:44Speaker 1: a character, I mean, she is bringing drama, so she's
- 27:47Speaker 1: super enjoyable to watch. Yeah, I agree. One thing I
- 27:50Speaker 1: loved was the montage of everyone getting ready. I loved
- 27:55Speaker 1: you know, they've got like May with like full contour
- 27:57Speaker 1: and the works that was. That was really executed really well.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I thought Gus splashes hose water on her face and
- 28:03Speaker 1: Sabrina tells Amanda, She's like, just blend it. Just blend
- 28:05Speaker 1: it all the way off. You got a so tarry over.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Speaking of Sabrina, when Lindsay's complaining to her, she's like,
- 28:12Speaker 1: I'm supposed to hang out with this random teen. She goes, yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and to her, you're also a random teen. As much
- 28:18Speaker 1: as Sabrina is like not about small town Maranac and
- 28:22Speaker 1: is like a New York elite, she's also like get
- 28:25Speaker 1: over yourself. Totally loved it. Here's a real sweet moment.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I loved when Gordo shares the footage with Nancy because
- 28:35Speaker 1: Nancy's like, I can't do this. This is not for me. Yeah,
- 28:38Speaker 1: like no, no, no, no no, And he shows the scene
- 28:41Speaker 1: showing her how sincere and warm. She comes off on
- 28:45Speaker 1: camera and Nancy's talking about Amanda being the daughter she
- 28:48Speaker 1: never had and we know the backstory there. I thought
- 28:50Speaker 1: it was a really touching moment because we don't know
- 28:52Speaker 1: Gordo up to that point. I like him too. Yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 1: he's like, the camera loves you. I don't know if
- 28:57Speaker 1: you said that, but that was the sentiment there, Yes,
- 29:00Speaker 1: did you love you? Can put your boots in the oven.
- 29:01Speaker 1: That don't make them biscuits. Did that just go way
- 29:06Speaker 1: over my head? The narrator said it at one time.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I don't even remember, and I don't remember which character said,
- 29:11Speaker 1: don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Lots of small town Southern colloquialism. Hey have a question
- 29:17Speaker 1: for you. I had read some criticism about the accent
- 29:21Speaker 1: Wendy Malick is using. Yeah, I would be the wrong
- 29:25Speaker 1: person to ask a Southern accent. To me, it sounds great.
- 29:29Speaker 1: What do I know from California New York City? I'm
- 29:34Speaker 1: a barbeker. I don't know. Yeah, the stuff's made in
- 29:38Speaker 1: New York City. It works well. It works well for me.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Me too, it works well for me. Do you have
- 29:43Speaker 1: a feathered friend of the week? To me, it's Gordo,
- 29:48Speaker 1: simply because he was the biggest surprise in this episode,
- 29:51Speaker 1: given that this episode was largely about Nancy and how
- 29:55Speaker 1: she sees herself, allowing him to be the vehicle to
- 29:59Speaker 1: allow her to make changed the way she sees herself. Yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 1: as like a fully formed human and not just the
- 30:05Speaker 1: replacement for the whole left behind for her husband. I
- 30:08Speaker 1: like a lot. Yeah, I oh, it's very thoughtful. Thanks,
- 30:12Speaker 1: who's your feathered friend of the week? I like I said,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I love the character of Sabrina. I think Rukiya Bernard
- 30:19Speaker 1: plays her perfectly. Every time she's on screen. I love
- 30:24Speaker 1: to watch her mouth. For some reason, I'm so drawn
- 30:27Speaker 1: into like watching her mouth. She just has a great
- 30:29Speaker 1: smile too. But I don't know what it is. It's
- 30:32Speaker 1: it's super weird. It's super weird that I'm watching that closely.
- 30:35Speaker 1: But I loved how like she navigated the whole replacing
- 30:40Speaker 1: Frank Junior in those scenes because he was an idiot,
- 30:44Speaker 1: like she was trying to convince Nancy. And then I
- 30:48Speaker 1: just think Sabrina is producing the shit out of the show, right,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and it's fun to watch. Yeah, it's real believable that
- 30:55Speaker 1: they're making the show. We gotta get the shot. Nobody
- 30:57Speaker 1: cares about you and your dumb taps, right. I did
- 31:03Speaker 1: feel a little bit bad for Frank Junior. He's like garbagehusband.
- 31:06Speaker 1: He is a garbage husband, he's a garbage son. But
- 31:09Speaker 1: Nancy had been like, just be yourself. So he's like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: this is who I am, this is what I contribute,
- 31:13Speaker 1: and she was like no. But I actually felt bad
- 31:18Speaker 1: for Nancy in that scene because she's like so proud
- 31:20Speaker 1: of this boy for being passionate about me whatever, and
- 31:25Speaker 1: then yeah, I don't like Frank Junior. Hey, thanks for
- 31:30Speaker 1: listening to this episode of Girls Gone Homework as a reminder.
- 31:35Speaker 1: You know what tomorrow is. That's my birthday. You know
- 31:38Speaker 1: what I want my birthday? I want reviews. I want
