- 0:00Speaker 1: This is to the Mark Somemon Show. I'm seventen w R.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk to Roger in a moment. We're all
- 0:12Speaker 2: hunting for him as we as we speak. Little controversy
- 0:15Speaker 2: yesterday the Health and Human Services, you know, the Robert F.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Kennedy and doctor Oz was there, Brooke Rollins for this thing.
- 0:23Speaker 2: They redid the food pyramid. I don't know if it's
- 0:27Speaker 2: good or bad. But do you know anybody actually looks
- 0:29Speaker 2: at this food pyramid? Do you know anybody that follows
- 0:31Speaker 2: the before you eat these say, let me check that
- 0:34Speaker 2: food pyramid. So they want you to eat more protein.
- 0:37Speaker 2: The good part is less sugar. That's the good part.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We'll get back to that anyway. But Roger Friedman, the
- 0:41Speaker 2: great entertainment reporter. His website, you should check it every day.
- 0:45Speaker 2: There's always great stories. Showbiz for one dot com, Showbiz
- 0:49Speaker 2: for one dot com. Roger Friedman, how you doing. I'm great,
- 0:54Speaker 2: Good morning, How are you good? Hey? We haven't talked
- 0:56Speaker 2: to a couple of weeks. I got to catch up
- 0:58Speaker 2: on a few things. One Marty Supreme. They talked about
- 1:02Speaker 2: it as the biggest movie of the year. It's doing okay,
- 1:05Speaker 2: but it's it's doing great. Did you see that I
- 1:08Speaker 2: used your picture? Yeah, and I featured you. I know
- 1:12Speaker 2: it was great. I actually knew the real Marty Supreme, who,
- 1:16Speaker 2: by the way, had nothing to do with this movie.
- 1:18Speaker 2: He was the ping pong champion. But this stuff with
- 1:21Speaker 2: the shot inspired by him. The idea movie is inspired
- 1:25Speaker 2: by him. Yeah, but with the chasing, the women, the gangsters,
- 1:28Speaker 2: the shootings, the car chases, none of that really happened
- 1:31Speaker 2: with him. He was actually a pretty boring guy in
- 1:33Speaker 2: real life. But I'm looking at the box office. It's
- 1:38Speaker 2: always like number two or three. It's not like number
- 1:40Speaker 2: one every week.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Well, you know, Avatar is out, so that's like the
- 1:46Speaker 1: big commercial movie at the moment. But Marty Supreme is
- 1:50Speaker 1: up to like sixteen million dollars. I think after just
- 1:53Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. That's great. Are you kidding? Okay,
- 1:56Speaker 1: that's wonderful.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It's a great. Yeah, I mean it's actually great. Everybody
- 2:01Speaker 2: should go see it. When does it start streaming because
- 2:03Speaker 2: some people wait for that.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Oh it's not. It's a sixty one million. That's fantastic
- 2:08Speaker 1: after twenty days. In the first few days were not
- 2:12Speaker 1: really they were just in two theaters. No it's doing great.
- 2:16Speaker 1: It won't be streaming for a long time. It's got
- 2:20Speaker 1: to get through the awards season. You know, Tomorrow Sunday
- 2:24Speaker 1: night is the Golden Globes. This past weekend was the
- 2:27Speaker 1: Critics Choice Awards, which he won Timothy Challamey. And then
- 2:33Speaker 1: we're gonna have the Golden Globes. Then we're gonna have
- 2:34Speaker 1: Oscar nominations. Then we're gonna have things like the SAG Awards,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and then finally the Oscars on March fifteenth. I don't
- 2:42Speaker 1: think you'll see Marty Supreme streaming until after March fifteenth.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Okay, it is, but that's.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Not bad it. Eventually it'll get there. But the two
- 2:51Speaker 1: big movies of this Oscar season are Marty Supreme in
- 2:56Speaker 1: one battle after another and they're going to battle for
- 3:00Speaker 1: the Oscar. And I think one battle will win the
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oscar and mart and Timothy Chalmer will win the Best
- 3:06Speaker 1: Actor Award.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It is. It is a great movie. Everybody should go
- 3:11Speaker 2: see Marty SUPREMEU love it.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It's a great movie. And it's funny because after you
- 3:14Speaker 1: said you knew him and you had pictures, a few
- 3:17Speaker 1: other people turned up in the papers saying that they
- 3:21Speaker 1: had known him also, And one of them was Tina Brown,
- 3:25Speaker 1: whose husband, Harry Evans, the famous editor, was sort of
- 3:28Speaker 1: like my mentor. And I had no idea that Marty
- 3:33Speaker 1: Riceman had written a second book that was never been published,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and he wanted Harry Evans to publish at a random house.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So he kept going to and Harry put a ping
- 3:43Speaker 1: pong table in his basement on fifty seventh Street, and
- 3:48Speaker 1: Marty was going over there and playing ping pong to
- 3:51Speaker 1: the discuss of Tita Brown, who didn't like him and
- 3:53Speaker 1: didn't want him in her house, but Harry loved it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And all they did was play ping pong night and day.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, he was an incredible ping pong player. Otherwise kind
- 4:03Speaker 2: of a dull and annoying sort of a guy, kind
- 4:05Speaker 2: of a little sleepy.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You could sort of see that in the movie. Actually,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you consider to see as he got older, this would
- 4:14Speaker 1: wear thin, you know.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. You know that the behavior is cute
- 4:19Speaker 2: when you're twenty two, when you're fifty two, right, that's cute.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Right now.
- 4:24Speaker 2: The other thing we haven't talked about, tell us about
- 4:26Speaker 2: what you know about Nick Reiner, Rob Reiner, the whole situation.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I don't know anything more than you do. It's such
- 4:31Speaker 1: a tragic story because Rob Reiner, who I knew, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: his wife Michelle, who I also knew, were just the
- 4:39Speaker 1: greatest people. And apparently they were living with this incredible
- 4:44Speaker 1: catastrophe in their house and didn't really know what to do,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and they were doing the.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Best they could.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And I thought, well, just you know, keep giving him
- 4:51Speaker 1: money and love and it'll turn around. And obviously the
- 4:54Speaker 1: kid was really sick. So now he's lost his lawyer.
- 5:00Speaker 1: His lawyer withdrew from the case this week and he's
- 5:04Speaker 1: going to have a public defender. And the lawyer didn't
- 5:07Speaker 1: say why, but my guess is that the brother and
- 5:11Speaker 1: sisters would not pay for the defense. This lawyer, his
- 5:15Speaker 1: name is Alan Jackson, probably costs one thousand dollars an
- 5:18Speaker 1: hour or whatever. And if you it's a tragic thing.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Can you imagine that your sibling kills your parents and
- 5:25Speaker 1: then comes to you and says, will you pay for
- 5:26Speaker 1: my defense? And what are you going to do?
- 5:29Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:29Speaker 1: And I think that probably they've decided they're not going
- 5:32Speaker 1: to pay for the defense. Anyway. He's going to wind
- 5:34Speaker 1: up in a mental hospital some kind, and they're going
- 5:37Speaker 1: to plead insanity and and it's horrible. He's ruined all
- 5:41Speaker 1: of their lives.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Apparently, apparently he's officially been diagnosed with being a schizophrenic,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and a couple of criminal lawyers told me, you have
- 5:50Speaker 2: to withdraw because you can't deal with schizophrenics as a lawyer.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Also, you need two lawyers. Actually, right, is it too
- 6:02Speaker 1: soon for jokes?
- 6:05Speaker 2: But now apparently the family has said they do not
- 6:08Speaker 2: want the death penalty. They've asked the DA and the.
- 6:11Speaker 1: D they don't want the death penalty for their brother.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but the DA has said the wishes of the
- 6:16Speaker 2: family will be a paramount to his decision, so they
- 6:19Speaker 2: will not seek the death penalty.
- 6:21Speaker 1: No, he's going to go to jail for the rest
- 6:23Speaker 1: of his life and he'll probably he'll die in jail,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and maybe it'll be a hospital jail because he's you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: obviously very very very sick guy. But what he's done
- 6:33Speaker 1: is just it's unforgivable. They'll never be able to forgive
- 6:36Speaker 1: him for this, and it must be the winding down
- 6:41Speaker 1: of any state when a person is older is a
- 6:43Speaker 1: very difficult thing. That you realize that Rob Bryer was
- 6:46Speaker 1: at the height of his career, so this must be
- 6:51Speaker 1: for these kids to have to deal with this now
- 6:53Speaker 1: is just the worst thing ever. It's unimaginable.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Hey, let's talk about Bruno Mars. It was always a
- 6:59Speaker 2: very big deal, but somehow he got hotter than ever
- 7:02Speaker 2: and now he's announced he's going to play stadiums. How
- 7:03Speaker 2: did he get so much hotter all of a sudden.
- 7:06Speaker 1: No, he's been hot for a while.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He had this huge hit with Lady Gaga over the
- 7:11Speaker 1: last year. It's a massive hit. It's called Die with
- 7:14Speaker 1: a Smile. It's a ballad and it's actually the biggest
- 7:18Speaker 1: record of the last year and a half. So that
- 7:22Speaker 1: really helped him. He also had a hit with one
- 7:24Speaker 1: of the young women from Black Pink and the Korean
- 7:27Speaker 1: pop so it really reignited. These two things really reignited him.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So he's made a new album that's coming out of
- 7:34Speaker 1: February twenty seventh, and last night he dropped a new
- 7:38Speaker 1: single and he's apparently in a fight online with one
- 7:42Speaker 1: of his fans who said on Twitter. The fan said,
- 7:47Speaker 1: this guy puts out the same song all the time
- 7:49Speaker 1: and no one ever says anything, and Bertobars attacked him
- 7:54Speaker 1: personally back on Twitter, which was hilarious. But I have
- 7:57Speaker 1: to say the song, which I can't remember. I think
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's called It Just Might, and it's a dance song
- 8:04Speaker 1: and it's fun. It sounds exactly like Leo Sayer's You
- 8:09Speaker 1: Make Me Feel Like Dancing. It's the exact same song.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And this is not the first time Bruno Mars has
- 8:16Speaker 1: done this. He did their song early in his career.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I can't rye the name of it. It sounded like
- 8:22Speaker 1: the Police w Sting. Every time I started playing, you thought, oh,
- 8:26Speaker 1: this is the Police. Bruno Mars is very good at
- 8:28Speaker 1: sort of copying other people's styles and then adding a
- 8:31Speaker 1: little bit of something else to make it sound new.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But he's fun, you know, he's a fun guy. He
- 8:37Speaker 1: has a great voice, and I don't mind him doing that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And Sting said at the time, I don't care, do
- 8:43Speaker 1: whatever you want. I don't know what Leo Sayer will
- 8:45Speaker 1: say when he hears this, but I played it. It
- 8:48Speaker 1: dropped on Spotify about twelve thirty last night, and I said,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'd better listen to this, and I'm like, this sounds
- 8:53Speaker 1: like something I know very much. So but he's but Bruno,
- 8:58Speaker 1: let's see, is he I'll tell you right now.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Is that a hit?
- 9:00Speaker 1: Probably it's probably number one, because you know, his people
- 9:03Speaker 1: don't even know who leos Aa was. Yeah, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 1: his fans they have no idea.
- 9:07Speaker 2: No, he had a bunch of hits mid seventies. Is
- 9:09Speaker 2: he still alive? I assuming of.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Course he is. You know, I'll tell you. I'll tell
- 9:14Speaker 1: you something about Bruno Mars that is smart. They booked
- 9:17Speaker 1: him this big tour. It's number six. They booked him
- 9:20Speaker 1: this big tour. But he's not going out on his own,
- 9:23Speaker 1: which is really smart. He's going out with four other
- 9:27Speaker 1: R and B stars, this girl Ray and Leon Thomas.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And this is what you have to do now because
- 9:35Speaker 1: people cannot fill these stadiums at these prices, so the
- 9:39Speaker 1: tickets are so jacked up. And you've seen a lot
- 9:43Speaker 1: of calamities of tours where you know there's like large
- 9:47Speaker 1: empty areas of stadiums. So I think that it's Bruno Marster.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I really want to see it, this Bruno Mars tour.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I think it's going to be great.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Well, you could have large empty areas if you're met
- 9:57Speaker 2: life jets are used to it. Giants are used to it.
- 10:00Speaker 1: The areas well, the giants maybe you're picking up some
- 10:04Speaker 1: steam now, aren't they.
- 10:06Speaker 2: That's when you know you're bad when you when when
- 10:08Speaker 2: you go four and thirteen they think it was a
- 10:10Speaker 2: great season. You know you're in trouble.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So you know you're only good as you're only as
- 10:15Speaker 1: good as your last game.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, Roger Friedman, great stuff. Check out his website.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And then there's new stories every day Showbiz four week.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I just put up a story. I just put up
- 10:25Speaker 1: a story about the Golden Globes, which are this Sunday,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and how it's changed. There's used to be all these
- 10:30Speaker 1: great Golden Globe parties and of course it's all everything
- 10:35Speaker 1: is diminished now. And if you want to read, I
- 10:38Speaker 1: think it's a pretty fun story to read about all
- 10:40Speaker 1: the Golden Globe stories on Golden Globe parties I've been
- 10:44Speaker 1: to all right.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Yeah, go to Showbiz for one one dot com. Showbiz
