Speaker 1: Part one Gorgons and Hydras and chimeras. Dire stories of
• 0:30
Speaker 1: Selino and the Harpies may reproduce themselves in the brain
• 0:34
Speaker 1: of superstition, but they were there before. They are transcripts types.
• 0:41
Speaker 1: The archetypes are in us and eternal. How else should
• 0:45
Speaker 1: the recital of that which we know in a waking
• 0:47
Speaker 1: sense to be false come to affect us at all?
• 0:51
Speaker 1: Is it that we naturally conceive terror from such objects
• 0:55
Speaker 1: considered in their capacity of being able to inflict upon
• 0:57
Speaker 1: us bodily injury? Oh? Least of all these terrors are
• 1:02
Speaker 1: of older standing. They date beyond body, or without the body,
• 1:08
Speaker 1: they would have been the same. That the kind of
• 1:11
Speaker 1: fear here treated is purely spiritual, that it is strong
• 1:15
Speaker 1: in proportion as it is objectless on earth, that it
• 1:19
Speaker 1: predominates in the period of our sinless infancy. Are difficulties,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: the solution of which might afford some probable insight into
• 1:26
Speaker 1: our anti mundane condition, and a peep at least into
• 1:30
Speaker 1: the shadowland of pre existence. Charles Lamb, witches and other
• 1:36
Speaker 1: night fears. One when a traveler in north central Massachusetts
• 1:45
Speaker 1: takes the wrong fork at the junction of the Aylesbury Pike,
• 1:48
Speaker 1: just beyond Dean's Corners, he comes upon a lonely and
• 1:52
Speaker 1: curious country. The ground gets higher, and the brier bordered
• 1:57
Speaker 1: stone walls press closer and closer against the ruts of
• 2:00
Speaker 1: the dusty curving road. The trees of the frequent forest
• 2:05
Speaker 1: belt seem too large, and the wild weeds, brambles, and
• 2:08
Speaker 1: grasses attain a luxuriance not often found in settled regions.
• 2:14
Speaker 1: At the same time, the planted fields appear singularly few
• 2:17
Speaker 1: and barren, while the sparsely scattered houses where a surprising
• 2:22
Speaker 1: uniform aspect of age, squalor, and dilapidation. Without knowing why,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: one hesitates to ask directions from the gnarled, solitary figures
• 2:32
Speaker 1: spied now and then on crumbling doorsteps or in the sloping,
• 2:36
Speaker 1: rock strewn meadows. Those figures are so silent and furtive
• 2:41
Speaker 1: that one feels somehow confronted by forbidden things with which
• 2:46
Speaker 1: it would be better to have nothing to do. When
• 2:49
Speaker 1: a rise in the road brings the mountains in view
• 2:52
Speaker 1: above the deep woods, the feeling of strange uneasiness is increased.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: The summits are too rounded and to give a sense
• 3:01
Speaker 1: of comfort and naturalness, and sometimes the sky silhouettes with
• 3:06
Speaker 1: especial clearness. The queer circles of tall stone pillars, with
• 3:10
Speaker 1: which most of them are crowned. Gorges and ravines of
• 3:14
Speaker 1: problematical depth intersect the way, and the crude wooden bridges
• 3:18
Speaker 1: always seem of dubious safety. When the road dips again,
• 3:23
Speaker 1: there are stretches of marshland that one instinctively dislikes and
• 3:27
Speaker 1: indeed almost fears. At evening when unseen Whipperwill's chatter and
• 3:32
Speaker 1: the fireflies come out in abnormal profusion to dance to
• 3:35
Speaker 1: the raucous, creepily insistent rhythms of stridently piping bullfrogs. The
• 3:42
Speaker 1: thin shining line of the Miskatonic's upper reaches has an
• 3:46
Speaker 1: oddly serpent like suggestion as it winds close to the
• 3:49
Speaker 1: feet of the domed hills among which it rises. As
• 3:53
Speaker 1: the hills draw nearer, one heeds their wooded sides more
• 3:57
Speaker 1: than their stone crown tops. Both sides loom up so
• 4:01
Speaker 1: darkly and precipitously that one wishes they would keep their distance,
• 4:05
Speaker 1: but there is no road by which to escape them.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: Across a covered bridge, one sees a small village huddled
• 4:12
Speaker 1: between the stream and the vertical slope of round mountain,
• 4:16
Speaker 1: and wonders at the cluster of rotting gambrel roofs bespeaking
• 4:20
Speaker 1: an earlier architectural period than that of the neighboring region.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: It is not reassuring to see, on a closer glance
• 4:28
Speaker 1: that most of the houses are deserted and falling to ruin,
• 4:31
Speaker 1: and that the broken steeple church now harbors the one
• 4:35
Speaker 1: slovenly mercantile establishment of the hamlet. One dreads to trust
• 4:40
Speaker 1: the tenebrous tunnel of the bridge, yet there is no
• 4:43
Speaker 1: way to avoid it. Once across, it is hard to
• 4:47
Speaker 1: prevent the impression of a faint malign odor about the
• 4:50
Speaker 1: village street, as of the massed mold and decay of centuries.
• 4:56
Speaker 1: It is always a relief to get clear of the
• 4:58
Speaker 1: place and to follow the narrow road around the base
• 5:01
Speaker 1: of the hills and across the level country beyond till
• 5:04
Speaker 1: it rejoins the Aylesbury Pike. Afterward, one sometimes learns that
• 5:09
Speaker 1: one has been through Dunwich. Outsiders visit Dunwich as seldom
• 5:15
Speaker 1: as possible, and since a certain season of horror, all
• 5:19
Speaker 1: the sign boards pointing toward it have been taken down.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: The scenery, judged by any ordinary esthetic canon, is more
• 5:26
Speaker 1: than commonly beautiful, yet there is no influx of artists
• 5:31
Speaker 1: or summer tourists. Two centuries ago, when talk of which blood,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: satan worship and strange forest presences was not laughed at,
• 5:40
Speaker 1: it was the custom to give reasons for avoiding the
• 5:43
Speaker 1: locality in our sensible age. Since the Dunwich horror of
• 5:48
Speaker 1: nineteen twenty eight was hushed up by those who had
• 5:50
Speaker 1: the towns and the world's welfare at heart, people shun
• 5:54
Speaker 1: it without knowing exactly why. Perhaps one reason, though it
• 5:59
Speaker 1: can not applied to uninformed strangers, is that the natives
• 6:03
Speaker 1: are now repellently decadent. Having gone far along that path
• 6:07
Speaker 1: of retrogression so common in many New England backwaters, they
• 6:12
Speaker 1: have come to form a race by themselves, with the
• 6:15
Speaker 1: well defined mental and physical stigmata of degeneracy and inbreeding.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: The average of their intelligence is woefully low, whilst their
• 6:25
Speaker 1: annals reek of overt viciousness and of half hidden murders, incests,
• 6:30
Speaker 1: and deeds of almost unabable violence and perversity. The old gentry,
• 6:35
Speaker 1: representing that two or three are midgerous families which came
• 6:38
Speaker 1: from Salem in sixteen ninety two, have kept somewhat above
• 6:42
Speaker 1: the general level of decay, though many branches are sunk
• 6:46
Speaker 1: into the sordid populace so deeply that only their names
• 6:50
Speaker 1: remain as a key to the origin they disgrace. Some
• 6:54
Speaker 1: of the wits and bishops still send their eldest sons
• 6:57
Speaker 1: to Harvard and Miskatonic, though those sons seldom returned to
• 7:01
Speaker 1: the moldering gambrel roofs under which they and their ancestors
• 7:05
Speaker 1: were born. No one, even those who have the facts
• 7:10
Speaker 1: concerning their recent horror, can say just what is the
• 7:13
Speaker 1: matter with Dunwich. Though old legends speak of unhallowed rites
• 7:17
Speaker 1: and conclaves of the Indians amidst which they called forbidden
• 7:21
Speaker 1: shapes of shadow out of the great rounded hills, and
• 7:25
Speaker 1: made wild orgiastic prayers that were answered by loud crackings
• 7:29
Speaker 1: and rumblings from the ground below. In seventeen forty seven,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: the Reverend Abijah Hoody, newly come to the Congregational Church
• 7:38
Speaker 1: at Dunwich Village, preached a memorable sermon on the close
• 7:42
Speaker 1: presence of Satan and his imps, in which he said,
• 7:46
Speaker 1: it must be allowed that these blasphemies of an infernal
• 7:49
Speaker 1: train of demons are matters of too common knowledge to
• 7:52
Speaker 1: be denied, the cursed voices of Azazel and Buzrael, of
• 7:58
Speaker 1: Beelzebub and Bilil being heard from underground by above a
• 8:03
Speaker 1: score of credible witnesses now living. I myself did not
• 8:08
Speaker 1: more than a fortnight ago catch a very plain discourse
• 8:11
Speaker 1: of evil powers in the hill behind my house, wherein
• 8:15
Speaker 1: there were a rattling and rolling, groaning, screeching and hissing,
• 8:20
Speaker 1: such as no things of this earth could raise up,
• 8:23
Speaker 1: and which must needs have come from those caves that
• 8:26
Speaker 1: only black magic can discover, and only the devil un luck.
• 8:32
Speaker 1: Mister Holy disappeared soon after delivering this sermon, but the
• 8:36
Speaker 1: text printed in Springfield is still extant. Noises in the
• 8:40
Speaker 1: hills continued to be reported from year to year and
• 8:44
Speaker 1: still form a puzzle to geologists and physiographers. Other traditions
• 8:50
Speaker 1: tell of foul odors near the hill, crowning circles of
• 8:53
Speaker 1: stone pillars, and of rushing airy presences, to be heard
• 8:58
Speaker 1: faintly at certain hours from stated points at the bottom
• 9:01
Speaker 1: of the great ravines. While still others try to explain
• 9:05
Speaker 1: the devil's hop yard, a bleak blasted hillside where no tree,
• 9:11
Speaker 1: shrub or grass blade will grow. Then, too, the natives
• 9:15
Speaker 1: are mortally afraid of the numerous whipperwills, which grow vocal
• 9:19
Speaker 1: on warm nights. It is vowed that the birds are
• 9:23
Speaker 1: psychopomps lying in wait for the souls of the dying,
• 9:27
Speaker 1: and that they time their eerie cries in unison with
• 9:30
Speaker 1: the sufferer struggling breath. If they can catch the fleeing
• 9:35
Speaker 1: soul when it leaves the body, they instantly flutter away,
• 9:38
Speaker 1: chittering in demon nike laughter. But if they fail, they
• 9:42
Speaker 1: subside gradually into a disappointed silence. These tales, of course,
• 9:48
Speaker 1: are obsolete and ridiculous, because they come down from very
• 9:52
Speaker 1: old times done, which is indeed ridiculously old, older by
• 9:57
Speaker 1: far than any of the communities within thirty miles of it.
• 10:01
Speaker 1: South of the village, one may still spy the cellar
• 10:04
Speaker 1: walls and chimney of the ancient bishop House, which was
• 10:07
Speaker 1: built before seventeen hundred, whilst the ruins of the mill
• 10:11
Speaker 1: at the Falls, built in eighteen o six, form the
• 10:14
Speaker 1: most modern piece of architecture to be seen. Industry did
• 10:19
Speaker 1: not flourish here, and the nineteenth century factory movement proved
• 10:23
Speaker 1: short lived. Oldest of all are the great rings of
• 10:28
Speaker 1: rough hewn stone columns on the hilltops, but these are
• 10:32
Speaker 1: more generally attributed to the Indians than to the settlers.
• 10:37
Speaker 1: Deposits of skulls and bones found within these circles and
• 10:41
Speaker 1: around the sizeable table like rock on Sentinel Hill sustained
• 10:45
Speaker 1: the popular belief that such spots were once the burial
• 10:48
Speaker 1: places of the Pocomtus, even though many ethnologists, disregarding the
• 10:53
Speaker 1: absurd improbability of such a theory, persist in believing the
• 10:57
Speaker 1: remains Caucasian. Two. It was in the township of Dunwich,
• 11:05
Speaker 1: in a large and partly inhabited farmhouse set against a hillside,
• 11:10
Speaker 1: four miles from the village and a mile and a
• 11:12
Speaker 1: half from any other dwelling, that Wilbur Weighty was born
• 11:15
Speaker 1: at five a m on Sunday, the second of February
• 11:19
Speaker 1: nineteen thirteen. This state was recalled because it was Candleness,
• 11:24
Speaker 1: which people in Dunwich curiously observe under another name, and
• 11:29
Speaker 1: because the noises in the hills had sounded and all
• 11:32
Speaker 1: the dogs of the countryside had barked persistently throughout the
• 11:35
Speaker 1: night before. Less worthy of notice was the fact that
• 11:39
Speaker 1: the mother was one of the decade at Witley's, a
• 11:42
Speaker 1: somewhat deformed and unattractive albino woman of thirty five, living
• 11:47
Speaker 1: with an aged and half insane father, about whom the
• 11:51
Speaker 1: most frightful tales of wizardly had been whispered in his youth.
• 11:55
Speaker 1: Lavinia Weightely had no known husband, but, according to the
• 11:59
Speaker 1: custom of the region, made no attempt to disavow the
• 12:02
Speaker 1: child concerning the other side of whose ancestry the country
• 12:06
Speaker 1: folk might and did speculate as widely as they chose.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: On the contrary, she seemed strangely proud of the dark,
• 12:15
Speaker 1: goatish looking infant who formed such a contrast to her
• 12:19
Speaker 1: own sickly and pink eyed albinism, and was heard to
• 12:23
Speaker 1: mutter many curious prophecies about its unusual powers and tremendous future.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: Lavinia was one who would be apt to mutter such things,
• 12:33
Speaker 1: for she was a lone creature, given to wandering amidst
• 12:36
Speaker 1: thunder storms in the hills and trying to read the
• 12:39
Speaker 1: great odorous books which her father had inherited through two
• 12:44
Speaker 1: centuries of Weitley's and which were fast falling to pieces
• 12:47
Speaker 1: with age and wormholes. She had never been to school,
• 12:52
Speaker 1: but was filled with disjointed scraps of ancient lore that
• 12:55
Speaker 1: Old Weighty had taught her. The remote farmhouse had always
• 12:59
Speaker 1: been feared because of Old Weighty's reputation for black magic,
• 13:04
Speaker 1: and the unexplained death by violence of Missus Weiteley when
• 13:07
Speaker 1: Lavinia was twelve years old had not helped to make
• 13:10
Speaker 1: the place popular. Isolated among strange influences, Lavinia was fond
• 13:17
Speaker 1: of wild and grandiose day dreams and singular occupations, nor
• 13:22
Speaker 1: was her leisure much taken up by household cares. In
• 13:25
Speaker 1: a home from which all standards of order and cleanliness
• 13:28
Speaker 1: had long since disappeared, there was a hideous screaming which
• 13:33
Speaker 1: echoed above even the hill noises and the dog's barking
• 13:37
Speaker 1: On the night Wilbur was born, but no known doctor
• 13:40
Speaker 1: or midwife presided at his coming. Neighbors knew nothing of
• 13:45
Speaker 1: him till a week afterward, when old Weighty drove his
• 13:48
Speaker 1: sleigh through the snow into Dunwich Village and discoursed incoherently
• 13:53
Speaker 1: to the group of loungers at Osborne's General store. There
• 13:57
Speaker 1: seemed to be a change in the old man, and
• 14:00
Speaker 1: added element of furtiveness in the clouded brain, which subtly
• 14:03
Speaker 1: transformed him from an object to a subject of fear.
• 14:07
Speaker 1: Though he was not one to be perturbed by any
• 14:10
Speaker 1: common family event, amidst at all, he showed some trace
• 14:15
Speaker 1: of the pride later noticed in his daughter, and what
• 14:18
Speaker 1: he said of the child's paternity was remembered by many
• 14:21
Speaker 1: of his hearers years afterward. I don't care what folks think.
• 14:27
Speaker 1: If Levinny's boy looked like his pa, he wouldn't look
• 14:30
Speaker 1: like nothing ye expect. You needn't think the only folks
• 14:34
Speaker 1: as the folks hereabouts Lavinni's read some and has seen
• 14:38
Speaker 1: some things. The most you only tell about. I calculate
• 14:42
Speaker 1: her man is as good a husband as you can
• 14:44
Speaker 1: find this side of Aylesbury. And if you know as
• 14:47
Speaker 1: much about the heroes ide, you wouldn't ask no better.
• 14:51
Speaker 1: Church Weddin nor Hearne let me tell you something. Some
• 14:55
Speaker 1: day you folks will hear a child of Lavinni's a
• 14:58
Speaker 1: call in his father's name on the top a sentinel hill.
• 15:03
Speaker 1: The only persons who saw Wilbur during the first month
• 15:06
Speaker 1: of his life were Old Zechariah Whitey of the undecayed Witley's,
• 15:10
Speaker 1: and Earl Sawyer's common law wife, Mami Bishop. Mami's visit
• 15:15
Speaker 1: was frankly one of curiosity, and her subsequent tales did
• 15:19
Speaker 1: justice to her observations. But Zechariah came to lead a
• 15:23
Speaker 1: pair of Alderney cows which Old Weighty had bought of
• 15:27
Speaker 1: his son Curtis. This marked the beginning of a course
• 15:30
Speaker 1: of cattle buying on the part of small Wilbur's family,
• 15:34
Speaker 1: which ended only in nineteen twenty eight, when the dune
• 15:37
Speaker 1: which horror came and went. Yet at no time did
• 15:41
Speaker 1: the ramshackle Weightly barn seem overcrowded with livestock. There came
• 15:46
Speaker 1: a period when people were curious enough to steal up
• 15:49
Speaker 1: and count the herd that grazed precariously on the steep
• 15:52
Speaker 1: hillside above the old farm house, and they could never
• 15:56
Speaker 1: find more than ten or twelve anemic, bloodless looking specimens Evidently,
• 16:01
Speaker 1: some blight or distemper, perhaps sprung from the unwholesome pasturage
• 16:06
Speaker 1: or the diseased fungi and timbers of the filthy barn,
• 16:10
Speaker 1: caused a heavy mortality amongst the weightly animals. Odd wounds
• 16:15
Speaker 1: or sores having something of the aspect of incisions seemed
• 16:19
Speaker 1: to afflict the visible cattle, and once or twice during
• 16:23
Speaker 1: the earlier months, certain callers fancied they could discern similar
• 16:27
Speaker 1: sores about the throats of the gray, unshaven old man
• 16:31
Speaker 1: and his slatternly, crinkly haired albino daughter. In the spring
• 16:36
Speaker 1: after Wilbur's birth, Lavinia resumed her customary rambles in the hills,
• 16:41
Speaker 1: bearing in her misproportioned arms the swarthy child. Public interest
• 16:47
Speaker 1: in the weightly subsided after most of the country folk
• 16:50
Speaker 1: had seen the baby, and no one bothered to comment
• 16:53
Speaker 1: on the swift development which that newcomer seemed every day
• 16:57
Speaker 1: to exhibit. Wilbur's growth indeed phenomenal, for within three months
• 17:03
Speaker 1: of his birth he had attained a size and muscular
• 17:06
Speaker 1: power not usually found in infants. Under a full year
• 17:09
Speaker 1: of age, his motions and even his vocal sounds showed
• 17:15
Speaker 1: a restraint and deliberateness highly peculiar in an infant, and
• 17:19
Speaker 1: no one was really unprepared when, at seven months he
• 17:23
Speaker 1: began to walk unassisted with falterings, which another month was
• 17:27
Speaker 1: sufficient to remove. It was somewhat after this time, on Halloween,
• 17:33
Speaker 1: that a great blaze was seen at midnight on the
• 17:35
Speaker 1: top of Sentinel Hill, where the old table like stone
• 17:39
Speaker 1: stands amidst his tumulus of ancient bones. Considerable talk was
• 17:44
Speaker 1: started when Silas, bishop of the Undecayed Bishops, mentioned having
• 17:48
Speaker 1: seen the boy running sturdily up that hill ahead of
• 17:52
Speaker 1: his mother about an hour before the blaze was remarked.
• 17:56
Speaker 1: Silas was rounding up a stray heifer, but he nearly
• 17:59
Speaker 1: forget got his mission when he fleetingly spied the two
• 18:02
Speaker 1: figures in the dim light of his lantern. They darted
• 18:07
Speaker 1: almost noiselessly through the underbrush, and the astonished watcher seemed
• 18:11
Speaker 1: to think they were entirely unclothed. Afterward, he could not
• 18:16
Speaker 1: be sure about the boy, whom may have had some
• 18:18
Speaker 1: kind of fringed belt and a pair of dark blue
• 18:21
Speaker 1: trunks or trousers on Wilbur was never subsequently seen alive
• 18:26
Speaker 1: and conscious without complete and tightly buttoned attire, the disarrangement
• 18:31
Speaker 1: or threatened disarrangement of which always seemed to fill him
• 18:33
Speaker 1: with anger and alarm. His contrast with his squalid mother
• 18:38
Speaker 1: and grandfather in this respect was thought very notable, until
• 18:42
Speaker 1: the horror of nineteen twenty eight suggested the most valid
• 18:45
Speaker 1: of reasons. The next January, gossips were mildly interested in
• 18:51
Speaker 1: the fact that Lavini's black brat had commenced to talk,
• 18:55
Speaker 1: and at the age of only eleven months. His speech
• 18:58
Speaker 1: was somewhat remarkable because of its difference from the ordinary
• 19:02
Speaker 1: accents of the region, and because it displayed a freedom
• 19:05
Speaker 1: from infantile lisping of which many children of three or
• 19:09
Speaker 1: four might well be proud. The boy was not talkative,
• 19:13
Speaker 1: yet when he spoke, he seemed to reflect some elusive
• 19:16
Speaker 1: element wholly unpossessed by Dunwich and its denizens. The strangeness
• 19:22
Speaker 1: did not reside in what he said, or even in
• 19:24
Speaker 1: the simple idioms he used, but seemed vaguely linked with
• 19:28
Speaker 1: his intonation or with the internal organs that produced the
• 19:32
Speaker 1: spoken sounds. His facial aspect, too, was remarkable for its maturity,
• 19:39
Speaker 1: For though he shared his mother's and grandfather's chinlessness. His
• 19:43
Speaker 1: firm and precociously shaped nose, united with the expression on
• 19:47
Speaker 1: his large, dark, almost Latin eyes to give him an
• 19:51
Speaker 1: air of quasi adulthood and well nigh preternatural intelligence. He was, however,
• 19:57
Speaker 1: exceedingly ugly, despite his appearance of brilliancy, there being something
• 20:03
Speaker 1: almost goatish or animalistic about his thick lips, large poured
• 20:08
Speaker 1: yellowish skin, coarse, crinkly hair, and oddly elongated ears. He
• 20:14
Speaker 1: was soon disliked even more decidedly than his mother and grandsire,
• 20:19
Speaker 1: and all conjectures about him were spiced with references to
• 20:23
Speaker 1: the bygone magic of Old Weightly. At how the hills
• 20:27
Speaker 1: once shook when he shrieked the dreadful name of yog
• 20:30
Speaker 1: Sothoth in the midst of a circle of stones, with
• 20:33
Speaker 1: a great book open in his arms before him. Dogs
• 20:37
Speaker 1: abhorred the boy, and he was always obliged to take
• 20:40
Speaker 1: various defensive measures against their barking menace. Three. Meanwhile, Old
• 20:47
Speaker 1: Weightly continued to buy cattle without measurably increasing the size
• 20:52
Speaker 1: of his herd. He also cut timber and began to
• 20:55
Speaker 1: repair the unused parts of his house, a spacious peak
• 20:59
Speaker 1: room fair whose rear end was buried entirely in the
• 21:03
Speaker 1: rocky hillside, and whose three least ruined ground floor rooms
• 21:07
Speaker 1: had always been sufficient for himself and his daughter. There
• 21:11
Speaker 1: must have been prodigious reserves of strength in the old
• 21:14
Speaker 1: man to enable him to accomplish so much hard labor,
• 21:18
Speaker 1: and though he still babbled immediately at times his carpentry
• 21:22
Speaker 1: seemed to show the effects of sound calculation. It had
• 21:26
Speaker 1: really begun as soon as Wilbur was born, when one
• 21:29
Speaker 1: of the many tool sheds had been put suddenly in order,
• 21:33
Speaker 1: clabrated and fitted with a stout fresh lock. Now in
• 21:37
Speaker 1: restoring the abandoned upper story of the house, he was
• 21:40
Speaker 1: a no less thorough craftsman. His mania showed itself only
• 21:45
Speaker 1: in his tight boarding up of all the windows in
• 21:48
Speaker 1: the reclaimed section, though many declared that it was a
• 21:52
Speaker 1: crazy thing to bother with the reclamation at all. Less
• 21:56
Speaker 1: inexplicable was his fitting up of another downstairs room for
• 21:59
Speaker 1: his new grandson, a room which several callers saw, though
• 22:04
Speaker 1: no one was ever admitted to the closely boarded upper story.
• 22:08
Speaker 1: This chamber he lined with tall firm shelving, along which
• 22:13
Speaker 1: he began gradually to arrange in apparently careful order all
• 22:17
Speaker 1: the rotting ancient books and parts of books, which during
• 22:21
Speaker 1: his own day had been heaped promiscuously in odd corners
• 22:24
Speaker 1: of the various rooms. I made some use of them,
• 22:29
Speaker 1: he would say, as he tried to mend a torn
• 22:31
Speaker 1: black letter page with paste prepared on the rusty kitchen stove.
• 22:36
Speaker 1: But the boys fitting to make better use of them,
• 22:39
Speaker 1: he'd order have him as well sought as a kin,
• 22:41
Speaker 1: for there's going to be all of his larnen. When
• 22:45
Speaker 1: Wilber was a year and seven months old in September
• 22:48
Speaker 1: of nineteen fourteen, his size and accomplishments were almost alarming.
• 22:53
Speaker 1: He had grown as large as a child of four,
• 22:56
Speaker 1: and was a fluent and incredibly intelligent talker. He ran
• 23:01
Speaker 1: freely about the fields and hills, and accompanied his mother
• 23:05
Speaker 1: on all her wanderings. At home, he would poor diligently
• 23:09
Speaker 1: over the queer pictures and charts in his grandfather's books,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: while old Weightly would instruct and catechise him through long,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: hushed afternoons. By this time, the restoration of the house
• 23:22
Speaker 1: was finished, and those who watched it wondered why one
• 23:25
Speaker 1: of the upper windows had been made into a solid
• 23:27
Speaker 1: plank door. It was a window in the rear of
• 23:31
Speaker 1: the east gable end, close against the hill, and no
• 23:35
Speaker 1: one could imagine why a cleated wooden runway was built
• 23:38
Speaker 1: up to it from the ground. About the period of
• 23:42
Speaker 1: this work's completion, people noticed that the old tool house
• 23:46
Speaker 1: tightly locked and windowlessly claborated since Wilbur's birth had been abandoned. Again.
• 23:52
Speaker 1: The door swung listlessly open, and when Earl Sawyer once
• 23:56
Speaker 1: stepped within after a cattle selling call on old Weightly,
• 24:00
Speaker 1: he was quite discomposed by the singular odor he encountered.
• 24:03
Speaker 1: Such a stench he averred as he had never before
• 24:06
Speaker 1: smelt in all his life, except near the Indian circles
• 24:10
Speaker 1: on the hills, and which could not come from anything
• 24:13
Speaker 1: sane or of this earth. But then the homes and
• 24:17
Speaker 1: sheds of Dune, which folk have never been remarkable for
• 24:20
Speaker 1: olfactory immaculateness. The following months were void of visible events,
• 24:26
Speaker 1: save that everyone swore to a slow but steady increase
• 24:29
Speaker 1: in the mysterious hill noises. On May Eve of nineteen
• 24:34
Speaker 1: fifteen there were tremors which even the Aylesbury people felt,
• 24:38
Speaker 1: whilst the following Halloween produced an underground rumbling queerly synchronized
• 24:42
Speaker 1: with bursts of flame them which wait these doings from
• 24:47
Speaker 1: the summit of Sentinel Hill. Wilbur was growing up uncannily,
• 24:52
Speaker 1: so that he looked like a boy of ten as
• 24:55
Speaker 1: he entered his fourth year. He read avidly by himself now,
• 24:59
Speaker 1: but talked much less than formerly. A settled taciturnity was
• 25:03
Speaker 1: absorbing him, and for the first time people began to
• 25:07
Speaker 1: speak specifically of the dawning look of evil in his
• 25:10
Speaker 1: goatish face. He would sometimes mutter an unfamiliar jargon and
• 25:15
Speaker 1: chant in bizarre rhythms, which chilled the listener with a
• 25:19
Speaker 1: sense of unexplainable terror. The aversion displayed toward him by
• 25:23
Speaker 1: dogs had now become a matter of wide remark, and
• 25:27
Speaker 1: he was obliged to carry a pistol in order to
• 25:29
Speaker 1: traverse the countryside in safety. His occasional use of the
• 25:33
Speaker 1: weapon did not enhance his popularity amongst the owners of
• 25:37
Speaker 1: Canine Guardians. The few callers at the house would often
• 25:41
Speaker 1: find Lavinia alone on the ground floor, while odd cries
• 25:45
Speaker 1: and footsteps resounded in the boarded up second story. She
• 25:50
Speaker 1: would never tell what her father and the boy were
• 25:53
Speaker 1: doing up there, though once she turned pale and displayed
• 25:57
Speaker 1: an abnormal degree of fear when a Jocot's fish pedler
• 26:00
Speaker 1: tried the locked door leading to the stairway. That peddler
• 26:04
Speaker 1: told the store loungers at Dunwich Village that he thought
• 26:08
Speaker 1: he heard a horse stamping on that floor above. The
• 26:11
Speaker 1: loungers reflected, thinking of the door and runway, and of
• 26:15
Speaker 1: the cattle that so swiftly disappeared. Then they shuddered as
• 26:20
Speaker 1: they recalled tales of old Weighty's youth, and of the
• 26:23
Speaker 1: strange things that are called out of the earth when
• 26:26
Speaker 1: a bullock is sacrificed at the proper time to certain
• 26:29
Speaker 1: heathen gods. It had for some time been noticed that
• 26:33
Speaker 1: dogs had begun to hate and fear the whole Weightly
• 26:36
Speaker 1: place as violently as they hated and feared young Wilbur personally.
• 26:41
Speaker 1: In nineteen seventeen, the war came, and Squire Sawyer Weighty,
• 26:45
Speaker 1: as chairman of the local draft board, had hard work
• 26:48
Speaker 1: finding a quota of young Dunwich men fit even to
• 26:52
Speaker 1: be sent to a development cap. The governments, alarmed at
• 26:56
Speaker 1: such signs of wholesale regional decadence, sent several officers and
• 27:00
Speaker 1: medical experts to investigate, conducting a survey which New England
• 27:04
Speaker 1: newspaper readers may still recall. It was the publicity attending
• 27:09
Speaker 1: this investigation which set reporters on the track of the
• 27:12
Speaker 1: Weightleys and caused the Boston Globe and Arkham Advertiser to
• 27:17
Speaker 1: print flamboyant Sunday stories of young Wilbur's precociousness, Old Weightly's
• 27:22
Speaker 1: black magic, the shelves of strange books, the sealed second
• 27:26
Speaker 1: story of the ancient farmhouse, and the weirdness of the
• 27:29
Speaker 1: whole region and its hill noises. Wilbur was four and
• 27:34
Speaker 1: a half then and looked like a lad of fifteen.
• 27:38
Speaker 1: His lip and cheek were fuzzy, with a coarse dark down,
• 27:42
Speaker 1: and his voice had begun to break. Earl Sawyer went
• 27:45
Speaker 1: out to the Weightly place with both sets of reporters
• 27:48
Speaker 1: and cameramen and called their attention to the queer stench
• 27:52
Speaker 1: which now seemed to trickle down from the sealed upper spaces.
• 27:56
Speaker 1: It was, he said, exactly like the smell he found
• 28:00
Speaker 1: in the tool shed abandoned when the house was finally repaired,
• 28:04
Speaker 1: and like the faint odors which he sometimes thought he
• 28:07
Speaker 1: caught near the stone circles on the mountains done which
• 28:11
Speaker 1: folk read the stories when they appeared, and grinned over
• 28:14
Speaker 1: the obvious mistakes. They wondered too, why the writers had
• 28:18
Speaker 1: made so much of the fact that Old Weightly always
• 28:21
Speaker 1: paid for his cattle in gold pieces of extremely ancient date.
• 28:26
Speaker 1: The Weightles had received their visitors with ill concealed distaste,
• 28:30
Speaker 1: though they did not dare court further publicity by a
• 28:34
Speaker 1: violent resistance or refusal to talk. Four For a decade,
• 28:42
Speaker 1: the annals of the Weightleys sink indistinguishably into the general
• 28:46
Speaker 1: life of a morbid community, used to their queer ways
• 28:50
Speaker 1: and hardened to their may Eve and all hallow orgies.
• 28:54
Speaker 1: Twice a year they would light fires on the top
• 28:56
Speaker 1: of Sentinel Hill, at which times the mountain rum would
• 29:00
Speaker 1: recur with greater and greater violence. While at all seasons
• 29:05
Speaker 1: there were strange and portentous doings at the Lonely farmhouse.
• 29:10
Speaker 1: In the course of time, Chorus professed to hear sounds
• 29:13
Speaker 1: in the sealed upper story even when all the family
• 29:17
Speaker 1: were downstairs, and they wondered how swiftly or how lingeringly
• 29:22
Speaker 1: a cow or bullock was usually sacrificed. There was talk
• 29:27
Speaker 1: of a complaint to the Society for the Prevention of
• 29:29
Speaker 1: Cruelty to Animals, but nothing ever came of it, since
• 29:33
Speaker 1: Dunwich folk are never anxious to call the outside world's
• 29:36
Speaker 1: attention to themselves. About nineteen twenty three, when Wilbur was
• 29:41
Speaker 1: a boy of ten, whose mind, voice, stature, and bearded
• 29:45
Speaker 1: face gave all the impressions of maturity, a second great
• 29:49
Speaker 1: siege of carpentry went on at the old house. It
• 29:53
Speaker 1: was all inside the sealed upper part, and from bits
• 29:57
Speaker 1: of discarded lumber people concluded that the youth and his
• 30:00
Speaker 1: grandfather had knocked out all the partitions and even removed
• 30:04
Speaker 1: the attic floor, leaving only one vast open void between
• 30:08
Speaker 1: the ground story and the peak roof. They had torn
• 30:12
Speaker 1: down the great central chimney too, and fitted the rusty
• 30:16
Speaker 1: range with a flimsy outside tin stovepipe. In the spring
• 30:21
Speaker 1: after this event, Old Weighty noticed the growing number of
• 30:24
Speaker 1: whipperwheels that would come out of cold spring Glen to
• 30:27
Speaker 1: chirp under his window at night. He seemed to regard
• 30:31
Speaker 1: the circumstance as one of great significance, and told the
• 30:35
Speaker 1: loungers at Osborne's that he thought his time had almost come.
• 30:40
Speaker 1: They whistled just in tune with my breathing. Now, he said, an,
• 30:45
Speaker 1: I guess they're getting ready to catch my soul. They
• 30:48
Speaker 1: know it's a goin' out and don't calculate to miss it.
• 30:52
Speaker 1: You'll know, boys are drum gone whether they get me
• 30:56
Speaker 1: or not. If they do, they'll keep us singin and
• 30:59
Speaker 1: last to break a day. If they don't, they'll kinder
• 31:03
Speaker 1: quiet down like I expect them, and the soul they
• 31:07
Speaker 1: huntsfer have some pretty tough tussles sometimes. On Lemmas Night
• 31:13
Speaker 1: nineteen twenty four, doctor Houghton of Aylesbury was hastily summoned
• 31:17
Speaker 1: by Wilbur Waiteley, who had lashed his one remaining horse
• 31:20
Speaker 1: through the darkness and telephoned from Osborne's in the village.
• 31:24
Speaker 1: He found Old Weighty in a very grave state, with
• 31:28
Speaker 1: a cardiac action and stertorous breathing that told of an
• 31:31
Speaker 1: end not far off. The shapeless albino daughter and oddly
• 31:36
Speaker 1: bearded grandson stood by the bedside, whilst from the vacant
• 31:40
Speaker 1: abyss overhead there came a disquieting suggestion of a rhythmical
• 31:45
Speaker 1: surging or lapping as of the waves on some level beach.
• 31:51
Speaker 1: The doctor, though, was chiefly disturbed by the chattering night
• 31:54
Speaker 1: birds outside, a seemingly limitless legion of whipperwills that cried
• 31:59
Speaker 1: their endless message and repetitions timed diabolically to the wheezing
• 32:04
Speaker 1: gasps of the dying man. It was uncanny and unnatural,
• 32:10
Speaker 1: too much, thought Doctor Howton, like the whole of the
• 32:13
Speaker 1: region he had entered so reluctantly. In response to the
• 32:16
Speaker 1: urgent call, toward one o'clock, Old Weighty gained consciousness and
• 32:22
Speaker 1: interrupted his wheezing to choke out a few words to
• 32:25
Speaker 1: his grandson. More space, Willy, more space. Soon you grows,
• 32:32
Speaker 1: and that grows faster. It'll be ready to serve you soon. Boy.
• 32:38
Speaker 1: Open up the gates to yog Sothoth with the long
• 32:41
Speaker 1: chant that you'll find on page seven fifty one of
• 32:44
Speaker 1: the complete edition, and then put a match to the
• 32:48
Speaker 1: prison fire from earth. Can't burn it, nohow. He was
• 32:53
Speaker 1: obviously quite mad. After a pause during which the flock
• 32:58
Speaker 1: of whibberwheels outside adjusted their cries to the altered tempo,
• 33:02
Speaker 1: while some indications of the strange hill noises came from
• 33:05
Speaker 1: afar off, he added another sentence or two fade it
• 33:10
Speaker 1: regular wily and mind the quantity, but don't let it
• 33:14
Speaker 1: grow too fast for the place. For if it busts
• 33:17
Speaker 1: quarters or gets out afore you opens to yugsutoth, it's
• 33:21
Speaker 1: all over and no use. Only them from beyond can
• 33:25
Speaker 1: make it multiply and work only them. The old es
• 33:29
Speaker 1: as wants to come back. But speech gave place to
• 33:34
Speaker 1: gasps again, and Lavinius screamed at the way the whipperwheels
• 33:38
Speaker 1: followed the change. It was the same for more than
• 33:41
Speaker 1: an hour. When the final throaty rattle came. Doctor Houghton
• 33:45
Speaker 1: drew shrunken lids over the glazing gray eyes as the
• 33:48
Speaker 1: tumult of birds faded imperceptibly to silence. Lavinius sobbed, but
• 33:54
Speaker 1: Wilbur only chuckled, whilst the hill noises rumbled faintly. They
• 33:59
Speaker 1: didn't get him, he muttered in his heavy bass voice.
• 34:04
Speaker 1: Wilbur was by this time a scholar of really tremendous
• 34:07
Speaker 1: eredition in his one sided way, and was quietly known
• 34:11
Speaker 1: by correspondence to many librarians in distant places where rare
• 34:15
Speaker 1: and forbidden books of old days are kept. He was
• 34:20
Speaker 1: more and more hated and dreaded around Dunwich because of
• 34:24
Speaker 1: certain youthful disappearances, which suspicion laid vaguely at his door,
• 34:29
Speaker 1: but was always able to silence inquiry through fear or
• 34:33
Speaker 1: through use of that fund of old time gold, which still,
• 34:36
Speaker 1: as in his grandfather's time, went forth regularly and increasingly
• 34:41
Speaker 1: for cattle buying. He was now tremendously mature of aspect,
• 34:45
Speaker 1: and his height, having reached the normal adult limit, seemed
• 34:49
Speaker 1: inclined to wax beyond that figure. In nineteen twenty five,
• 34:53
Speaker 1: when a scholarly correspondent from Miskatonic University called upon him
• 34:57
Speaker 1: one day and departed, pale and puzzle, he was fully
• 35:01
Speaker 1: six and three quarters feet tall. Through all the years,
• 35:05
Speaker 1: Wilbur had treated his half deformed albino mother with a
• 35:08
Speaker 1: growing contempt, finally forbidding her to go to the hills
• 35:12
Speaker 1: with him on May Eve and hallowmass. And in nineteen
• 35:15
Speaker 1: twenty six the poor creature complained to Mamie Bishop of
• 35:19
Speaker 1: being afraid of him. Day's more about him as I
• 35:23
Speaker 1: knows than I can tell you, Maimie, she said, And
• 35:26
Speaker 1: nowadays there's more nor what I know myself. I vow
• 35:31
Speaker 1: a fur god. I don't know what he wants nor
• 35:34
Speaker 1: what he's a tryin to do. That Halloween, the hill
• 35:38
Speaker 1: noises sounded louder than ever, and fire burned on Sentinel
• 35:42
Speaker 1: Hill as usual, but people paid more attention to the
• 35:45
Speaker 1: rhythmical screaming of vast flocks of unnaturally belated whibberwills, which
• 35:50
Speaker 1: seemed to be assembled near the unlighted Weighty farmhouse. After midnight,
• 35:56
Speaker 1: their shrill notes burst into a kind of pandamaniac cacination
• 36:00
Speaker 1: which filled all the countryside, and not until dawn did
• 36:03
Speaker 1: they finally quiet down. Then they vanished, hurrying southward, where
• 36:09
Speaker 1: they were fully a month overdue. What this meant, no
• 36:13
Speaker 1: one could quite be certain. Till later. None of the
• 36:16
Speaker 1: country folks seemed to have died, but poor Lavinia weitly.
• 36:20
Speaker 1: The twist at Albino was never seen again. In the
• 36:25
Speaker 1: summer of nineteen twenty seven, Wilbur repaired two sheds in
• 36:29
Speaker 1: the farmyard and began moving his books and effects out
• 36:32
Speaker 1: to them. Soon afterward, Earl Sawyer told the loungers at
• 36:36
Speaker 1: Osborne's that more carpentry was going on in the Weightly farmhouse.
• 36:41
Speaker 1: Wilbur was closing all the doors and windows on the
• 36:44
Speaker 1: ground floor and seemed to be taking out partitions as
• 36:48
Speaker 1: he and his grandfather had done upstairs four years before.
• 36:52
Speaker 1: He was living in one of the sheds, and Sawyer
• 36:55
Speaker 1: thought he seemed unusually worried and tremulous. People generally suspected
• 37:00
Speaker 1: him of knowing something about his mother's disappearance, and very
• 37:04
Speaker 1: few ever approached his neighborhood. Now his height had increased
• 37:08
Speaker 1: to more than seven feet and showed no signs of
• 37:12
Speaker 1: ceasing its development. End of Part one, Part two of
• 37:29
Speaker 1: The Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft. This LibriVox recording
• 37:34
Speaker 1: is in the public domain. The Dunwich Horror five. The
• 37:42
Speaker 1: following winter brought an event no less strange than Wilbur's
• 37:46
Speaker 1: first trip outside the Dunwich region. Correspondence with the Widner
• 37:51
Speaker 1: Library at Harvard, the BiblioTech Nationale in Paris, the British Museum,
• 37:55
Speaker 1: the University of Buenos Aires, and the Library of Miskatonic
• 37:59
Speaker 1: University at Arkham had failed to get him the loan
• 38:02
Speaker 1: of a book he desperately wanted, so at length he
• 38:05
Speaker 1: set out in person, shabby, dirty bearded, and uncouth of dialect,
• 38:11
Speaker 1: to consult the copy at miss Skatonic, which was the
• 38:14
Speaker 1: nearest to him. Geographically almost eight feet tall, and carrying
• 38:18
Speaker 1: a cheap now valise from Osborne's general store. This dark
• 38:23
Speaker 1: and goatish gargoyle appeared one day in Arkham in quest
• 38:26
Speaker 1: of the dreaded volume kept under lock and key at
• 38:29
Speaker 1: the college library, the hideous necronomicon of the mad Arab
• 38:34
Speaker 1: alhazred in Olas Wormius Latin version as printed in Spain
• 38:39
Speaker 1: in the seventeenth century. He had never seen a city before,
• 38:43
Speaker 1: but had no thought save to find his way to
• 38:46
Speaker 1: the university grounds, where indeed he passed heedlessly by the
• 38:50
Speaker 1: great white fanged watchdog that barked with unnatural fury and enmity,
• 38:55
Speaker 1: and tugged frantically at its stout chain. Wilber had whipped
• 39:00
Speaker 1: them the priceless but imperfect copy of doctor D's English version,
• 39:04
Speaker 1: which his grandfather had bequeathed him, and upon receiving access
• 39:08
Speaker 1: to the Latin copy, he at once began to collate
• 39:11
Speaker 1: the two texts with the aim of discovering a certain
• 39:14
Speaker 1: passage which would have come on the seven hundred fifty
• 39:17
Speaker 1: first page of his own defective volume. This much he
• 39:21
Speaker 1: could not civilly refrain from telling the librarian the same
• 39:25
Speaker 1: erudite Henry Armitage, a m. Meskatonic pH d. Princeton lit. D.
• 39:30
Speaker 1: Johns Hopkins, who had once called at the farm, and
• 39:34
Speaker 1: who now politely plied him with questions. He was looking.
• 39:38
Speaker 1: He had to admit for a kind of formula or
• 39:40
Speaker 1: incantation containing the frightful name Yog Solthoth, And it puzzled
• 39:46
Speaker 1: him to find discrepancies, duplications, and ambiguities which made the
• 39:50
Speaker 1: matter of determination far from easy. As he copied the formula,
• 39:55
Speaker 1: he finally chose. Doctor Armitage looked involuntarily over his shoulder
• 39:59
Speaker 1: at the o open pages, the left hand one of which,
• 40:03
Speaker 1: in the Latin version contains such monstrous threats to the
• 40:06
Speaker 1: peace and sanity of the world. Nor is it to
• 40:10
Speaker 1: be thought, ran the text, as Armitage mentally translated it,
• 40:14
Speaker 1: that man is either the oldest or the last of
• 40:16
Speaker 1: Earth's masters, or that the common bulk of life and
• 40:20
Speaker 1: substance walks alone. The old ones were, the old ones are,
• 40:25
Speaker 1: and the old ones shall be not in the space
• 40:28
Speaker 1: as we know, but between them they walk serene and primal, undimensioned.
• 40:34
Speaker 1: And to us unseen, Yog Sawthoth knows the gate. Yog
• 40:39
Speaker 1: Sawthoth is the gate. Yog Sawthoth is the key and
• 40:44
Speaker 1: guardian of the gate, past, present, future. All are one
• 40:49
Speaker 1: in Yog Sawthoth. He knows where the old ones broke
• 40:53
Speaker 1: through of old, and where they shall break through again.
• 40:56
Speaker 1: He knows where they have trod Earth's fields, and where
• 40:59
Speaker 1: they still tread them, and why no one can behold
• 41:03
Speaker 1: them as they tread by their smell. Can men sometimes
• 41:07
Speaker 1: know them near? But of their semblance can no man know.
• 41:11
Speaker 1: Saving only in the features of those they have begotten
• 41:14
Speaker 1: on mankind, And of those are their many sorts, differing
• 41:18
Speaker 1: in likeness from man's truest idolen to that shape without
• 41:22
Speaker 1: sight or substance, which is they. They walk unseen and foul,
• 41:27
Speaker 1: in lonely places, where the words have been spoken and
• 41:30
Speaker 1: the rights howled through. At their seasons, the wind jibbers
• 41:35
Speaker 1: with their voices, and the earth mutters with their consciousness.
• 41:39
Speaker 1: They bend the forest and crush the city. Yet may
• 41:43
Speaker 1: not forest or city behold the hand that smites Kadath
• 41:48
Speaker 1: in the cold waste hath known them? And what man
• 41:51
Speaker 1: knows Kadath. The ice, desert of the south, and the
• 41:55
Speaker 1: sunken isles of ocean hold stones, whereon their seal is engraven.
• 42:00
Speaker 1: But who hath seen the deep frozen city, or the
• 42:03
Speaker 1: seal tower long garlanded with seaweed and barnacles. Great Cthulhu
• 42:08
Speaker 1: is their cousin. Yet can he spy them only dimly?
• 42:12
Speaker 1: He a shub nigorath, as a foulness? Shall ye know them?
• 42:17
Speaker 1: Their hand is at your throats, yet ye see them not,
• 42:21
Speaker 1: and their habitation is even one with your guarded threshold.
• 42:25
Speaker 1: Yog Sothoth is the key to the gate whereby this
• 42:29
Speaker 1: fears meet. Man rules now where they ruled once, They
• 42:34
Speaker 1: shall soon rule where man rules now. After summer is winter,
• 42:39
Speaker 1: and after winter summer. They wait, patient and potent, for
• 42:44
Speaker 1: here shall they reign again. Doctor Armitage, associating what he
• 42:50
Speaker 1: was reading with what he had heard of Dunwich and
• 42:52
Speaker 1: its brooding presences, and of Wilburgh Waitly and his dim,
• 42:56
Speaker 1: hideous aura that stretch from a dubious berth to a
• 42:59
Speaker 1: cloud of probable matricide, felt a wave of fright as
• 43:03
Speaker 1: tangible as a draft of the tomb's cold clamminess. The bent,
• 43:08
Speaker 1: goldish giant before him seemed like the spawn of another
• 43:12
Speaker 1: planet or dimension, like something only partly of mankind, and
• 43:17
Speaker 1: linked to black gulfs of essence and entity that stretched
• 43:20
Speaker 1: like titan phantasms, beyond all spheres of force and matter,
• 43:24
Speaker 1: space and time. Presently, Wilbur raised his head and began
• 43:29
Speaker 1: speaking in that strange, resonant fashion which hinted at sound
• 43:33
Speaker 1: producing organs unlike the run of mankinds. Mister Armitage, he said,
• 43:40
Speaker 1: I calculate, I've got to take that book home. They's
• 43:44
Speaker 1: things in it. I've got to try under certain conditions
• 43:48
  Speaker 1: that I can't get here, And it'd be a mortal
• 43:51
Speaker 1: sin to let a red tape rule hold me up.
• 43:55
Speaker 1: Let me take it along, sir, And how swore they
• 43:58
Speaker 1: won't nobody know that difference. I don't need to tell you.
• 44:02
Speaker 1: I'll take good care of it. It want me that
• 44:06
Speaker 1: put this d copy in the shape it is. He
• 44:10
Speaker 1: stopped as he saw firm denial on the librarian's face,
• 44:14
Speaker 1: and his own goatish features grew Crafty. Armitage, half ready
• 44:18
Speaker 1: to tell him he might make a copy of what
• 44:20
Speaker 1: parts he needed, thought suddenly of the possible consequences and
• 44:24
Speaker 1: checked himself. There was too much responsibility in giving such
• 44:29
Speaker 1: a being the key to such blasphemous outer spheres. Watney
• 44:33
Speaker 1: saw how things stood, and tried to answer lightly while
• 44:38
Speaker 1: all right, if you feel that way about it, maybe
• 44:42
Speaker 1: Harvard won't be so fussy as you be. And without
• 44:46
Speaker 1: saying more, he rose and strode out of the building,
• 44:49
Speaker 1: stooping at each doorway. Armitage heard the savage yelping of
• 44:53
Speaker 1: the great Watchdog and studied Weightney's gorilla like lope. As
• 44:57
Speaker 1: he crossed a bit of campus visible from window, he
• 45:01
Speaker 1: thought of the wild tales he had heard, and recalled
• 45:04
Speaker 1: the old Sunday stories in the Advertiser. These things, and
• 45:08
Speaker 1: the lore he had picked up from Dunewich rustics and
• 45:11
Speaker 1: villagers during his one visit there unseen things not of Earth,
• 45:16
Speaker 1: or at least not of tried dimensional Earth, rushed fetid
• 45:20
Speaker 1: and horrible through New England's glens and brooded obscenely on
• 45:24
Speaker 1: the mountain tops. Of this he had long felt certain.
• 45:28
Speaker 1: Now he seemed to sense the close presence of some
• 45:31
Speaker 1: terrible part of the intruding horror, and to glimpse a
• 45:35
Speaker 1: hellish advance in the black dominion of the ancient and
• 45:38
Speaker 1: once passive Nightmare. He locked away the Necronomicon with a
• 45:43
Speaker 1: shudder of disgust, but the room still reeked with an
• 45:46
Speaker 1: unholy and unidentifiable stench as a foulness? Shall ye know them?
• 45:53
Speaker 1: He quoted, Yes, the odor was the same as that
• 45:57
Speaker 1: which had sickened him at the Weighty farmhouse lest A
• 46:00
Speaker 1: three years before. He thought of Wilbur goldish and ominous
• 46:05
Speaker 1: once again, and laughed mockingly at the village rumors of
• 46:08
Speaker 1: his parentage inbreeding. Armitage muttered half aloud to himself, Great God,
• 46:15
Speaker 1: what simpletons show them Arthur Mackin's Great God pan and
• 46:20
Speaker 1: they'll think it a common Dunwich scandal. But what thing,
• 46:25
Speaker 1: what cursed, shapeless influence on or off this three dimensional earth?
• 46:30
Speaker 1: Was Wilbur Waiteley's father, born on Candlemess nine months after
• 46:36
Speaker 1: May Eve of nineteen twelve, when the talk about the
• 46:39
Speaker 1: queer Earth noises reached clear to Arkham. What walked on
• 46:43
Speaker 1: the mountains that May night? What rude must horror fastened
• 46:47
Speaker 1: itself on the world in half human flesh and blood.
• 46:52
Speaker 1: During the ensuing weeks, doctor Armitage set about to collect
• 46:55
Speaker 1: all possible data on Wilbur Waighty and the formless presences
• 46:59
Speaker 1: around Dunnel, which he got in communication with doctor Houghton
• 47:03
Speaker 1: of Aylesbury, who had attended Old Weighty in his last illness,
• 47:07
Speaker 1: and found much to ponder over in the grandfather's last words.
• 47:11
Speaker 1: As quoted by the physician, A visit to Dunwich Village
• 47:15
Speaker 1: failed to bring out much that was new, but a
• 47:19
Speaker 1: close survey of the Necronomicon in those parts which Wilbur
• 47:22
Speaker 1: had sought so avidly, seemed to supply new and terrible
• 47:26
Speaker 1: clues to the nature, methods, and desires of the strange
• 47:30
Speaker 1: evil so vaguely threatening this planet. Talks with several students
• 47:35
Speaker 1: of archaic law in Boston and letters to many others
• 47:38
Speaker 1: elsewhere gave him a growing amazement, which passed slowly through
• 47:43
Speaker 1: varied degrees of alarm to a state of really acute
• 47:46
Speaker 1: spiritual fear. As the summer drew on, he felt dimly
• 47:51
Speaker 1: that something ought to be done about the lurking terrors
• 47:54
Speaker 1: of the upper Mescatonic Valley and about the monstrous being
• 47:58
Speaker 1: known to the human world as Wilbur Waitley six. The
• 48:06
Speaker 1: Dunwich Horror itself came between Lammis and the Equinox in
• 48:10
Speaker 1: nineteen twenty eight, and doctor Armitage was among those who
• 48:13
Speaker 1: witnessed its mantrous prologue. He had heard meanwhile, of Waitey's
• 48:17
Speaker 1: grotesque trip to Cambridge, and of his frantic efforts to
• 48:21
Speaker 1: borrow or copy from the Necronomicon at the Widner Library.
• 48:26
Speaker 1: Those efforts had been in vain, since Armitage had issued
• 48:29
Speaker 1: warnings of the keenest intensity to all librarians having charge
• 48:33
Speaker 1: of the dreaded volume. Wilbur had been shockingly nervous at Cambridge,
• 48:38
Speaker 1: anxious for the book, yet almost equally anxious to get
• 48:41
Speaker 1: home again, as if he feared the results of being away.
• 48:44
Speaker 1: Long Early in August, the half expected outcome developed, and
• 48:49
Speaker 1: in the small hours of the third Doctor Armitage was
• 48:53
Speaker 1: awakened suddenly by the wild, fierce cries of the savage
• 48:56
Speaker 1: watchdog on the college campus been terrible. The snarling, half
• 49:02
Speaker 1: mad growls and barks continued, always in mounting volume, but
• 49:06
Speaker 1: with hideously significant pauses. Then there rang out a scream
• 49:11
Speaker 1: from a wholly different throat, such a scream as roused
• 49:15
Speaker 1: half the sleepers of Arkham and haunted their dreams ever afterward,
• 49:19
Speaker 1: such a scream as could come from no being born
• 49:22
Speaker 1: of earth or wholly of earth. Armitage hastened into some
• 49:26
Speaker 1: clothing and rushed across the street and lawn to the
• 49:29
Speaker 1: college buildings, saw that others were ahead of him, and
• 49:33
Speaker 1: heard the echoes of a burglar alarm still shrilling. From
• 49:36
Speaker 1: the library. An open window showed black and gaping in
• 49:40
Speaker 1: the moonlight. What had come had indeed completed its entrance,
• 49:44
Speaker 1: for the barking and the screaming, now fast fading into
• 49:48
Speaker 1: a mixed low growling and moaning, proceeded unmistakably from within.
• 49:53
Speaker 1: Some instinct warned Armitage that what was taking place was
• 49:57
Speaker 1: not a thing for unfortified eyes to see, so he
• 50:00
Speaker 1: brushed back the crowd with authority as he unlocked the
• 50:03
Speaker 1: vestibule door. Among the others, he saw Professor Warren Rice
• 50:08
Speaker 1: and doctor Francis Morgan, men to whom he had told
• 50:11
Speaker 1: some of his conjectures and misgivings, and these two he
• 50:15
Speaker 1: motioned to accompany him inside. The inward sounds, except for
• 50:20
Speaker 1: a watchful droning whine from the dog, had by this
• 50:23
Speaker 1: time quite subsided. But Armitage now perceived with a sudden
• 50:28
Speaker 1: start that a loud chorus of whipperwheels among the shrubbery
• 50:32
Speaker 1: had commenced a damnably rhythmical piping, as if in unison
• 50:36
Speaker 1: with the last breath of a dying man. The building
• 50:40
Speaker 1: was full of a frightful stench, which doctor Armitage knew
• 50:43
Speaker 1: too well, and the three men rushed across the hall
• 50:47
Speaker 1: to the small genealogical reading room. Whence the low whining
• 50:50
Speaker 1: came for a second. Nobody dared to turn on the light.
• 50:55
Speaker 1: Then Armitage summoned up his courage and snapped the switch.
• 50:59
Speaker 1: One of the three, it is not certain which shrieked
• 51:02
Speaker 1: aloud at what sprawled before them among disordered tables and
• 51:05
Speaker 1: overturned chairs. Professor Rice declares that he wholly lost consciousness
• 51:10
Speaker 1: for an instant, though he did not stumble or fall.
• 51:15
Speaker 1: The thing that lay half bent on its side in
• 51:18
Speaker 1: a fetid pool of greenish yellow, icher and tarry stickiness
• 51:22
Speaker 1: was almost nine feet tall, and the dog had torn
• 51:25
Speaker 1: off all the clothing and some of the skin. It
• 51:28
Speaker 1: was not quite dead, but twitched silently and spasmodically, while
• 51:33
Speaker 1: its chest heaved in monstrous unison with the mad piping
• 51:37
Speaker 1: of the expectant whipper wheels. Outside, bits of shoe leather
• 51:41
Speaker 1: and fragments of apparel were scattered about the room, and
• 51:45
Speaker 1: just inside the window, an empty canvas sack lay where
• 51:48
Speaker 1: it had evidently been thrown near the central desk, a
• 51:52
Speaker 1: revolver had fallen a dented but undischarged cartridge, later explaining
• 51:58
Speaker 1: why it had not been fired. The thing itself, however,
• 52:02
Speaker 1: crowded out all other images at the time. It would
• 52:05
Speaker 1: be trite and not wholly accurate to say that no
• 52:09
Speaker 1: human pen could describe it, But one may properly say
• 52:12
Speaker 1: that it could not be vividly visualized by any one
• 52:15
Speaker 1: whose ideas of aspect and contour are too closely bound
• 52:19
Speaker 1: up with the common life forms of this planet. And
• 52:22
Speaker 1: of the three known dimensions, it was partly human beyond
• 52:26
Speaker 1: a doubt, with very manlike hands and head, and the
• 52:30
Speaker 1: goldish chinless face had the stamp of the weightlas upon it.
• 52:34
Speaker 1: But the torso and lower parts of the body were
• 52:37
Speaker 1: territologically fabulous, so that only generous clothing could ever have
• 52:42
Speaker 1: enabled it to walk on Earth unchallenged or uneradicated. Above
• 52:47
Speaker 1: the waist, it was semi anthropomorphic, though its chest, where
• 52:51
Speaker 1: the dog's rending paws still rested watchfully, had the leathery
• 52:55
Speaker 1: reticulated hide of a crocodile or alligator. The back was
• 53:00
Speaker 1: eyeballed with yellow and black, and dimly suggested the squamous
• 53:04
Speaker 1: covering of certain snakes below the waist, though it was
• 53:08
Speaker 1: the worst for here all human resemblance left off, and
• 53:12
Speaker 1: sheer fantasy began. The skin was thickly covered with coarse
• 53:16
Speaker 1: black fur, and from the abdomen a score of long,
• 53:20
Speaker 1: greenish gray tentacles with red sucking mouths protruded limply. Their
• 53:25
Speaker 1: arrangement was odd and seemed to follow the symmetries of
• 53:28
Speaker 1: some cosmic geometry unknown to Earth or the Solar System.
• 53:33
Speaker 1: On each of the hips, deep set in a kind
• 53:36
Speaker 1: of pinkish ciliated orbit, was what seemed to be a
• 53:40
Speaker 1: rudimentary eye, whilst in lieu of a tail there depended
• 53:44
Speaker 1: a kind of trunk or feeler with purple annular markings
• 53:49
Speaker 1: and with many evidences of being an undeveloped mouth or throat.
• 53:53
Speaker 1: The limbs, save for their black fur, roughly resembled the
• 53:57
Speaker 1: hind legs of prehistoric Earth's giants sarians, and terminated in
• 54:02
Speaker 1: ridgy veined pads that were neither hoofs nor claws. When
• 54:07
Speaker 1: the thing breathed, its tail and tentacles rhythmically changed color,
• 54:11
Speaker 1: as if from some circulatory cause normal to the non
• 54:15
Speaker 1: human side of its ancestry. In the tentacles. This was
• 54:19
Speaker 1: observable as a deepening of the greenish tinge, whilst in
• 54:23
Speaker 1: the tail it was manifest as a yellowish appearance, which
• 54:27
Speaker 1: alternated with a sickly grayish white. In the spaces between
• 54:30
Speaker 1: the purple rings of genuine blood, there was none, only
• 54:35
Speaker 1: the fetid, greenish yellow icher, which trickled along the painted
• 54:39
Speaker 1: floor beyond the radius of the stickiness, and left a
• 54:42
Speaker 1: curious discoloration behind it. As the presence of the three
• 54:47
Speaker 1: men seemed to rouse the dying thing, it began to mumble,
• 54:50
Speaker 1: without turning or raising its head. Doctor Armitage made no
• 54:54
Speaker 1: written record of its mouthings, but asserts confidently that nothing
• 54:58
Speaker 1: in English was uttered. At first, the syllables defied all
• 55:02
Speaker 1: correlation with any speech of earth. But toward the last
• 55:07
Speaker 1: there came some disjointed fragments, evidently taken from the necronomicon
• 55:12
Speaker 1: that monstrous blasphemy in quest of which the thing had perished.
• 55:17
Speaker 1: Those fragments, as Armadage recalls them, ran something like unai
• 55:22
Speaker 1: nungaga bug shahgug yeah yog saw thot yog saw doot.
• 55:32
Speaker 1: They trailed off into nothingness as the whipperwills shrieked in
• 55:36
Speaker 1: rhythmical crescendos of unholy anticipation. Then came a halt in
• 55:41
Speaker 1: the gasping, and the dog raised his head in a long,
• 55:44
Speaker 1: lugubrious howl. A change came over the yellow, goatish face
• 55:48
Speaker 1: of the prostrate thing, and the great black eyes fell
• 55:52
Speaker 1: in appallingly outside the window. The shrilling of the whipperwills
• 55:56
Speaker 1: had suddenly ceased, and above the murmurs of the gathering crowd,
• 56:00
Speaker 1: there came the sound of a panic struck whirring and
• 56:03
Speaker 1: fluttering against the moon. Vast clouds of feathery watchers rose
• 56:08
Speaker 1: and raced from sight, frantic at that which they had
• 56:11
Speaker 1: sought for prey. All at once, the dog started up abruptly,
• 56:16
Speaker 1: gave a frightened bark, and leaped nervously out the window
• 56:19
Speaker 1: by which it had entered. A cry rose from the crowd,
• 56:23
Speaker 1: and Doctor Armadage shouted to the men outside that no
• 56:26
Speaker 1: one must be admitted till the police or medical examiner came.
• 56:30
Speaker 1: He was thankful that the windows were just too high
• 56:33
Speaker 1: to permit of peering in, and drew the dark curtains
• 56:36
Speaker 1: carefully down over each one. By this time two policemen
• 56:41
Speaker 1: had arrived, and doctor Morgan, meeting them in the vestibule,
• 56:45
Speaker 1: was urging them for their own sakes to postpone entrance
• 56:48
Speaker 1: to the stench filled reading room till the examiner came
• 56:51
Speaker 1: and the prostrate thing could be covered up. Meanwhile, frightful
• 56:56
Speaker 1: changes were taking place on the floor. One need not
• 56:59
Speaker 1: describe the kind and rate of shrinkage and disintegration that
• 57:03
Speaker 1: occurred before the eyes of doctor Armitage and Professor Rice,
• 57:07
Speaker 1: but it is permissible to say that, aside from the
• 57:10
Speaker 1: external appearance of face and hands, the really human elements
• 57:14
Speaker 1: in Wilbur Weighty must have been very small. When the
• 57:17
Speaker 1: medical examiner came, there was only a sticky, whitish mass
• 57:21
Speaker 1: on the painted boards, and the monstrous odor had nearly disappeared. Apparently,
• 57:27
Speaker 1: Weightly had had no skull or bony skeleton, at least
• 57:31
Speaker 1: in any true or stable sense. He had taken somewhat
• 57:35
Speaker 1: after his unknown father seven. Yet all this was only
• 57:43
Speaker 1: the prolog of the actual Dunwich horror. Formalities were gone
• 57:47
Speaker 1: through by bewildered officials. Abnormal details were duly kept from
• 57:51
Speaker 1: press and public, and men were sent to Dunwich in
• 57:54
Speaker 1: Aylesbury to look up property and notify any who might
• 57:58
Speaker 1: be heirs of the late Wilbur Weightley. They found the
• 58:01
Speaker 1: countryside in great agitation, both because of the growing rumblings
• 58:05
Speaker 1: beneath the domed hills and because of the unwonted stench
• 58:09
Speaker 1: and the surging lapping sounds which came increasingly from the
• 58:13
Speaker 1: great empty shell formed by weightleys boarded up farmhouse. Earl Sawyer,
• 58:19
Speaker 1: who tended the horse and cattle during Wilbur's absence, had
• 58:22
Speaker 1: developed a woefully acute case of nerves. The officials devised
• 58:27
Speaker 1: excuses not to enter the noisome boarded place, and were
• 58:31
Speaker 1: glad to confine their survey of the deceased living quarters
• 58:35
Speaker 1: the newly mended sheds to a single visit. They filed
• 58:38
Speaker 1: a ponderous report at the courthouse in Aylesbury, and litigations
• 58:42
Speaker 1: concerning airship are said to be still in progress. Amongst
• 58:45
Speaker 1: the innumerable weightleas decayed and undecayed of the upper Mescatonic Valley,
• 58:52
Speaker 1: an almost interminable manuscript in strange characters, written in a
• 58:56
Speaker 1: huge ledger and adjudged a sort of diary because of
• 58:59
Speaker 1: the spacing and the variations in ink and penmanship, presented
• 59:04
Speaker 1: a baffling puzzle to those who found it on the
• 59:06
Speaker 1: old bureau, which served as its owner's desk. After a
• 59:10
Speaker 1: week of debate, it was sent to Miskatonic University, together
• 59:14
Speaker 1: with the deceased collection of Strange books, for study and
• 59:17
Speaker 1: possible translation. But even the best linguists soon saw that
• 59:22
Speaker 1: it was not likely to be unriddled with ease. No
• 59:26
Speaker 1: trace of the ancient gold with which Wilbur and Old
• 59:28
Speaker 1: Weighty always pay their debts has yet been discovered. It
• 59:33
Speaker 1: was in the dark of September ninth that the horror
• 59:36
Speaker 1: broke loose. The hill. Noises had been very pronounced during
• 59:40
Speaker 1: the evening, and dogs barked frantically all night. Early risers
• 59:44
Speaker 1: on the tenth noticed a peculiar stench in the air.
• 59:49
Speaker 1: About seven o'clock, Luther Brown, the hired boy at George Cory's,
• 59:53
Speaker 1: between Cold Spring Glen and the village, rushed frenziedly back
• 59:57
Speaker 1: from his morning trip to ten Acre Meadow with the cows.
• 1:00:01
Speaker 1: He was almost convulsed with fright as he stumbled into
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: the kitchen and in the yard outside. Then no less
• 1:00:07
Speaker 1: frightened herd were pawing and lowing pitifully. Having followed the
• 1:00:11
Speaker 1: boy back. In the panic, they shared with him. Between gasps,
• 1:00:15
Speaker 1: Luther tried to stammer out his tail to missus Corey.
• 1:00:19
Speaker 1: Up dar in the rud beyond the glen, Miss Cary,
• 1:00:22
Speaker 1: there's somethin bendar. It smells like thunder, and all the
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: bushes and little trees is pushed back from the rud
• 1:00:29
Speaker 1: like that a hou's been moved along of it. And
• 1:00:32
Speaker 1: that ain't the worst Another These prince in the road,
• 1:00:35
Speaker 1: Miss Corey, great round prince, as big as barrel heads,
• 1:00:39
Speaker 1: all sunk down deep like an elephant had been along.
• 1:00:42
Speaker 1: Only they's a sight more nor four feet could make.
• 1:00:46
Speaker 1: I looked at one or two before I run, and
• 1:00:48
Speaker 1: I see everyone was covered with lines spreading out from
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: one place, like as if big palm leaf fans twice
• 1:00:56
Speaker 1: or three times as big as any day is had
• 1:00:59
Speaker 1: of being pounded down into the road in the smill
• 1:01:02
Speaker 1: was awful, like what it is around Wizard Waitney's old house.
• 1:01:07
Speaker 1: Here he faltered and seemed to shiver afresh with the
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: fright that had sent him flying home. Missus Corey, unable
• 1:01:14
Speaker 1: to extract more information, began telephoning the neighbors, thus starting
• 1:01:19
Speaker 1: on its rounds. The overture of panic that heralded the
• 1:01:21
Speaker 1: major terrors. When she got Sallly Sawyer, housekeeper at Seth Bishop's,
• 1:01:26
Speaker 1: the nearest place to Waitley's. It became her turn to
• 1:01:29
Speaker 1: listen instead of transmit, for Sallie's boy Chauncey, who slept poorly,
• 1:01:35
Speaker 1: had been up on the hill toward Witley's and had
• 1:01:38
Speaker 1: dashed back in terror after one look at the place
• 1:01:41
Speaker 1: and at the pasturage where mister Bishop's cows had been
• 1:01:44
Speaker 1: left out all night. Yes, miss Corey, came Sallie's tremulous
• 1:01:49
Speaker 1: voice over the party wire. Chancy. He'd just come back
• 1:01:53
Speaker 1: a postin' and couldn't have talked for beIN scared. He says.
• 1:01:57
Speaker 1: Old Waitney's house is all blowed up, with the timbers
• 1:02:00
Speaker 1: scattered round like they've been dynamite inside, Only the bottom
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: floor ain't through, but it's all covered with a kind
• 1:02:08
Speaker 1: of tar like stuff that smells awful and drips down
• 1:02:12
Speaker 1: off in the ages on to the ground where the
• 1:02:14
Speaker 1: side timbers is blowed away. And these awful kind of
• 1:02:18
Speaker 1: marks in the yard too, great round marks, rigger round
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: than a hog's head, and all sticky with stuff like
• 1:02:25
Speaker 1: is on the blowed up house. Chancy. He says, they
• 1:02:29
Speaker 1: leads off into the meadows, where a great swath widin'
• 1:02:32
Speaker 1: a barn is matted down, and all the stun walls
• 1:02:35
Speaker 1: tumbled every which way wherever it goes. And he says,
• 1:02:39
Speaker 1: says he, miss Corey, as how he sought to look
• 1:02:42
Speaker 1: for Seth's cows, frightened as he was, and found him
• 1:02:46
Speaker 1: in the upper pasture. Now the Devil's hop yard in
• 1:02:48
Speaker 1: an awful shape. Half on 'em's clean gone, and not
• 1:02:53
Speaker 1: half of them what's left is sucked, most dry of blood,
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: with sores on 'em like they's been on waitneys cattle
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: ever since Laviny's black Brite was born. Seth, he's gone
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: out now to look at him, though I'll vow he
• 1:03:07
Speaker 1: won't here to get very nigh wizard Weightley's chancey didn't
• 1:03:11
Speaker 1: look careful to see where the big matted down swathe
• 1:03:14
Speaker 1: led arderit left the pasturage, but he says he thinks
• 1:03:17
Speaker 1: it pinted towards the Glen Rudd to the village. I
• 1:03:21
Speaker 1: tell you, miss Corey, they's somethin abroad, as hadn't order
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: to be abroad. And now for one think that black
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: wilbur Weiteley has come to the bad and he deserved
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: is at the bottom of the breeding of it. He
• 1:03:33
Speaker 1: want all human hisself, I always says to everybody. And
• 1:03:37
Speaker 1: I think he and old Weitey must have raised something
• 1:03:39
Speaker 1: in that there nailed up house as ain't even so
• 1:03:42
Speaker 1: human as he was. There's always been unseen things around
• 1:03:46
Speaker 1: Dunewich livin things as ain't human, an ain't good for
• 1:03:50
Speaker 1: human folks. The ground was a talkin' last night, and
• 1:03:54
Speaker 1: towards morning, Chancy he heard the whipper wheels so loud
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: in cold spring Glenn and sleep none. Then he thought
• 1:04:02
Speaker 1: he heard another feint like sound over toward Wizard. Wait
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: these a kind of rippin' or tearin' of wood, like
• 1:04:09
Speaker 1: some big box or crate was being opened. Fur off,
• 1:04:14
Speaker 1: What with this? An that he didn't get to sleep
• 1:04:16
Speaker 1: at all till sun up and no sooner wizy up
• 1:04:19
Speaker 1: this mornin'. But he's got to go over to wait
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: these and see what's the matter. He see enough, I
• 1:04:25
Speaker 1: tell you, miss Corey, this don't mean no good. And
• 1:04:28
Speaker 1: I think as all the men folks ought to get
• 1:04:31
Speaker 1: up a party and do somethin', I know somethin's awfuls
• 1:04:34
Speaker 1: about and feel my time is nigh, though only God
• 1:04:38
Speaker 1: knows just what it is. Did your Luther take account
• 1:04:43
Speaker 1: of whar them big tracks led to you? No, wow,
• 1:04:46
Speaker 1: Miss Corey. If they was on the glen rud this
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: side of the glen and ain't got to your house yet,
• 1:04:52
Speaker 1: I calculate they must go into the glen itself, they
• 1:04:56
Speaker 1: would do that, I Alla, says cold Spring. Then ain't
• 1:05:00
Speaker 1: no healthy, no decent place. The whipper wheels and fireflies
• 1:05:05
Speaker 1: there never did act like they was creatures of God,
• 1:05:08
Speaker 1: and thezed them, as says, ye can hear strange things
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: a Russian and a talkin in the air down there,
• 1:05:14
Speaker 1: if ye stand in the ripe place between the rock
• 1:05:17
Speaker 1: Falls and bears Den. By that noon, fully three quarters
• 1:05:22
Speaker 1: of the men and boys of Dunwich were trooping over
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: the roads and meadows between the new made weightly ruins
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: and cold Spring Glen, examining in horror the vast monstrous Prince,
• 1:05:33
Speaker 1: the maimed bishop cattle, the strange, noisome wreck of the farmhouse,
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: and the bruised, matted vegetation of the fields and roadsides.
• 1:05:42
Speaker 1: Whatever had burst loose upon the world had assuredly gone
• 1:05:45
Speaker 1: down into the great sinister ravine for all the trees
• 1:05:48
Speaker 1: on the banks were bent and broken, and a great
• 1:05:51
Speaker 1: avenue had been gouged in the precipice hanging underbrush. It
• 1:05:56
Speaker 1: was as though a house launched by an avalanche had
• 1:05:59
Speaker 1: slid down through the tangled growths of the almost vertical
• 1:06:02
Speaker 1: slope from below. No sound came, but only a distant,
• 1:06:07
Speaker 1: undefinable fetter, And it is not to be wondered at
• 1:06:10
Speaker 1: that the men preferred to stay on the edge and argue,
• 1:06:13
Speaker 1: rather than descend and beard the unknown cyclopean horror in
• 1:06:17
Speaker 1: its lair. Three dogs that were with the party had
• 1:06:21
Speaker 1: barked furiously at first, but seemed cowed and reluctant when
• 1:06:25
Speaker 1: near the glen. Some one telephoned the news to the
• 1:06:28
Speaker 1: Aylesbury Transcript, but the editor, accustomed to wild tales from Dunwich,
• 1:06:33
Speaker 1: did no more than concoct a humorous paragraph about it,
• 1:06:36
Speaker 1: an item soon afterward reproduced by the Associated Press. That night,
• 1:06:42
Speaker 1: everyone went home, and every house and barn was barricaded
• 1:06:46
Speaker 1: as stoutly as possible. Needless to say, no cattle were
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: allowed to remain in open pasturage. About two in the morning,
• 1:06:54
Speaker 1: a frightful stench and the savage barking of the dogs
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: awaken the household at Elmer Fry's on the eastern edge
• 1:07:00
Speaker 1: of cold Spring Glen, and all agreed that they could
• 1:07:03
Speaker 1: hear a sort of muffled swishing or lapping sound from
• 1:07:07
Speaker 1: somewhere outside. Missus Fry proposed telephoning the neighbors, and Elmer
• 1:07:13
Speaker 1: was about to agree when the noise of splintering wood
• 1:07:15
Speaker 1: burst in upon their deliberations. It came apparently from the barn,
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: and was quickly followed by a hideous screaming and stamping
• 1:07:24
Speaker 1: amongst the cattle. The dog slavered and crouched close to
• 1:07:28
Speaker 1: the feet of the fear numbed family. Fry lit a
• 1:07:32
Speaker 1: lantern through force of habit, but knew it would be
• 1:07:35
Speaker 1: death to go out into that black farm yard. The
• 1:07:39
Speaker 1: children and the women folk whimpered, kept from screaming by
• 1:07:42
Speaker 1: some obscure vestigial instinct of defense, which told them their
• 1:07:47
Speaker 1: lives depended on silence. At last, the noise of the
• 1:07:51
Speaker 1: cattle subsided to a pitiful moaning, and a great snapping,
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: crashing and crackling ensued. The Fries, huddled together in the
• 1:08:00
Speaker 1: sitting room, did not dare to move until the last
• 1:08:03
Speaker 1: echoes died away far down in cold Spring Glen. Then,
• 1:08:08
Speaker 1: amidst the dismal moans from the stable and the demoniac
• 1:08:11
Speaker 1: piping of late Whibberwills in the glen, Selina Fry tottered
• 1:08:16
Speaker 1: to the telephone and spread what new she could of
• 1:08:18
Speaker 1: the second phase of the horror. The next day all
• 1:08:22
Speaker 1: the countryside was in a panic and cowed. Uncommunicative groups
• 1:08:27
Speaker 1: came and went where the fiendish thing had occurred. Two
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: titan swaths of destruction stretched from the glen to the
• 1:08:34
Speaker 1: Fry farm yard. Monstrous prints covered the bare patches of ground,
• 1:08:39
Speaker 1: and one side of the old red barn had completely
• 1:08:41
Speaker 1: caved in. Of the cattle, only about a quarter could
• 1:08:45
Speaker 1: be found and identified. Some of these were in curious fragments,
• 1:08:50
Speaker 1: and all that survived had to be shot. Earl Sawyer
• 1:08:54
Speaker 1: suggested that help be asked from Aylesbury or Arkham, but
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: others maintained it would be of no use. Old Zebulon, Weightly,
• 1:09:03
Speaker 1: of a branch that hovered about half way between soundness
• 1:09:06
Speaker 1: and decadence, made darkly wild suggestions about rights that ought
• 1:09:11
Speaker 1: to be practiced on the hilltops. He came of a
• 1:09:14
Speaker 1: line where tradition ran strong and his memories of chantings
• 1:09:18
Speaker 1: in the Great Stone circles were not altogether connected with
• 1:09:21
Speaker 1: Wilbur and his grandfather. Darkness fell upon a stricken countryside,
• 1:09:26
Speaker 1: too passive to organize for real defense. In a few cases,
• 1:09:31
Speaker 1: closely related families would band together and watch in the
• 1:09:34
Speaker 1: gloom under one roof, but in general there was only
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: a repetition of the barricading of the night before, and
• 1:09:41
Speaker 1: a feudal, ineffective gesture of loading muskets and setting pitchforks handily.
• 1:09:46
Speaker 1: About nothing, however, occurred, except some hill noises, and when
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: the day came there were many who hoped that the
• 1:09:54
Speaker 1: new horror had gone as swiftly as it had come.
• 1:09:58
Speaker 1: There were even bold souls who posed an offensive expedition
• 1:10:01
Speaker 1: down in the glen, though they did not venture to
• 1:10:04
Speaker 1: set an actual example to the still reluctant majority. When
• 1:10:09
Speaker 1: night came again, the barricading was repeated, though there was
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: less huddling together of families. In the morning, both the
• 1:10:17
Speaker 1: Fry and the Seth Bishop households reported excitement among the
• 1:10:21
Speaker 1: dogs and vague sounds and stenches from afar, while early
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: explorers noted with horror a fresh set of the monstrous
• 1:10:29
Speaker 1: tracks in the road skirting Sentinel Hill. As before, the
• 1:10:33
Speaker 1: sides of the road showed a bruising indicative of the
• 1:10:36
Speaker 1: blasphemously stupendous bulk of the horror, whilst the confirmation of
• 1:10:41
Speaker 1: the track seemed to argue a passage in two directions,
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: as if the moving mountain had come from cold Spring
• 1:10:47
Speaker 1: Glen and returned to it along the same path. At
• 1:10:51
Speaker 1: the base of the hill, a thirty foot swath of
• 1:10:54
Speaker 1: crushed shrubbery and saplings led steeply upward, and the seekers
• 1:10:58
Speaker 1: gasped when they saw that eve, even the most perpendicular places,
• 1:11:01
Speaker 1: did not deflect the inexorable trail. Whatever the horror was,
• 1:11:06
Speaker 1: it could scale a sheer, stony cliff of almost complete verticality,
• 1:11:11
Speaker 1: and as the investigators climbed around to the hill summit
• 1:11:13
Speaker 1: by safer routes, they saw that the trail ended, or
• 1:11:17
Speaker 1: rather reversed there. It was here that the Watlas used
• 1:11:22
Speaker 1: to build their hellish fires and chant their hellish rituals
• 1:11:26
Speaker 1: by the table like stone on may Eve and Hallowmass.
• 1:11:30
Speaker 1: Now that very stone formed the center of a vast
• 1:11:33
Speaker 1: space thrashed around by the mountainous horror, whilst upon its
• 1:11:37
Speaker 1: slightly concave surface was a thick, featid deposit of the
• 1:11:41
Speaker 1: same tarry stickiness observed on the floor of the ruined
• 1:11:44
Speaker 1: Weightley farmhouse. When the horror escaped, men looked at one
• 1:11:48
Speaker 1: another and muttered. Then they looked down the hill. Apparently
• 1:11:53
Speaker 1: the horror had descended by a route much the same
• 1:11:56
Speaker 1: as that of its ascent. To speculate was feudle, reason, logic,
• 1:12:01
Speaker 1: and normal ideas of motivation stood confounded. Only old Zebulon,
• 1:12:07
Speaker 1: who was not with the group, could have done justice
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: to the situation or suggested a plausible explanation. Thursday night
• 1:12:15
Speaker 1: began much like the others, but it ended less happily.
• 1:12:19
Speaker 1: The whibberwheels in the glen had screened with such unusual
• 1:12:22
Speaker 1: persistence that many could not sleep, and about three a m.
• 1:12:26
Speaker 1: All the party telephones rang tremulously. Those who took down
• 1:12:30
Speaker 1: the receivers heard a fright mad voice shriek out help,
• 1:12:35
Speaker 1: oh my God, and some thought a crashing sound followed
• 1:12:38
Speaker 1: the breaking off of the exclamation. There was nothing more.
• 1:12:43
Speaker 1: No one dared do anything, and no one knew till morning,
• 1:12:46
Speaker 1: whence the call came. Then those who had heard it
• 1:12:50
Speaker 1: called everyone on the line and found that only the
• 1:12:52
Speaker 1: Fries did not reply. The truth appeared an hour later,
• 1:12:56
Speaker 1: when a hastily assembled group of armed men trudged down
• 1:13:00
Speaker 1: to the fry place at the head of the glen.
• 1:13:03
Speaker 1: It was horrible, yet hardly a surprise. There were mor
• 1:13:07
Speaker 1: swas and monstrous prints, but there was no longer any house.
• 1:13:12
Speaker 1: It had caved in like an eggshell, and amongst the ruins,
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: nothing living or dead could be discovered, only a stench
• 1:13:21
Speaker 1: and a tari stickiness. The Elmer Fries had been erased
• 1:13:26
Speaker 1: from Dunwich. End of Part two, Part three of The
• 1:13:43
Speaker 1: Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft. This LibriVox recording is
• 1:13:48
Speaker 1: in the public domain The Dunwich Horror eight. In the meantime,
• 1:13:56
Speaker 1: a quieter, yet even more spiritually poignant phase of the
• 1:13:59
Speaker 1: horse Or had been blackly unwinding itself behind the closed
• 1:14:03
Speaker 1: door of a shelf lined room in Arkham. The curious
• 1:14:07
Speaker 1: manuscript Record or Diary of Wilburg Witely, delivered to Miskatonic
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: University for translation, had caused much worry in bafflement among
• 1:14:15
Speaker 1: the experts and languages, both ancient and modern. Its very alphabet,
• 1:14:19
Speaker 1: notwithstanding a general resemblance to the heavily shaded Arabic used
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: in Mesopotamia, being absolutely unknown to any available authority, the
• 1:14:28
Speaker 1: final conclusion of the linguists was that the text represented
• 1:14:32
Speaker 1: an artificial alphabet, giving the effect of a cipher, though
• 1:14:36
Speaker 1: none of the usual methods of cryptographic solution seemed to
• 1:14:39
Speaker 1: furnish any clue, even when applied on the basis of
• 1:14:43
Speaker 1: every tongue the writer might conceivably have used. The ancient
• 1:14:47
Speaker 1: books taken from Waitey's quarters, while absorbingly interesting and in
• 1:14:51
Speaker 1: several cases promising to open up new and terrible lines
• 1:14:55
Speaker 1: of research among philosophers and men of science, were of
• 1:14:58
Speaker 1: no assistance whatever this matter. One of them, a heavy
• 1:15:02
Speaker 1: tone with an iron clasp, was in another unknown alphabet,
• 1:15:06
Speaker 1: this one of a very different caste and resembling Sanskrit
• 1:15:10
Speaker 1: more than anything else. The old ledger was at length
• 1:15:14
Speaker 1: given wholly into the charge of doctor Armitage, both because
• 1:15:17
Speaker 1: of his peculiar interest in the weightly matter and because
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: of his wide linguistic learning and skill in the mystical
• 1:15:23
Speaker 1: formulae of Antiquity and Middle Ages. Armitage had an idea
• 1:15:29
Speaker 1: that the alphabet might be something esoterically used by certain
• 1:15:32
Speaker 1: forbidden cults which have come down from old times, and
• 1:15:36
Speaker 1: which have inherited many forms and traditions from the wizards
• 1:15:39
Speaker 1: of the Saracenic world. That question, however, he did not
• 1:15:44
Speaker 1: deem vital, since it would be unnecessary to know the
• 1:15:47
Speaker 1: origin of the symbols if, as he suspected, they were
• 1:15:50
Speaker 1: used as a cipher in a modern language. It was
• 1:15:54
Speaker 1: his belief that, considering the great amount of text involved,
• 1:15:57
Speaker 1: the writer would scarcely have wished the truth using another
• 1:16:01
Speaker 1: speech than his own, save perhaps in certain special formulae
• 1:16:05
Speaker 1: and incantations. Accordingly, he attacked the manuscript with the preliminary
• 1:16:10
Speaker 1: assumption that the bulk of it was in English. Doctor
• 1:16:14
Speaker 1: Armitage knew from the repeated failures of his colleagues that
• 1:16:17
Speaker 1: the riddle was a deep and complex one, and that
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: no simple mode of solution could merit even a trial.
• 1:16:24
Speaker 1: All through late August, he fortified himself with the masked
• 1:16:28
Speaker 1: lore of cryptography, drawing upon the fullest resources of his
• 1:16:32
Speaker 1: own library, and waiting night after night amidst the arcana
• 1:16:36
Speaker 1: of Trithemius Polygraphia. John Baptista Portas de Fertivus letteratum notice

Speaker 1: Devasenaire's trait de schiff Falconer's Cryptomenesis, Peedifacta, Davies and Thickness's
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: eighteenth century treatises, and such fairly modern authorities as Blair
• 1:16:53
Speaker 1: von Martin and Kluber's Cryptographic. He interspersed his study of
• 1:16:58
Speaker 1: the books with attacks on the menu script itself, and
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: in time became convinced that he had to deal with
• 1:17:04
Speaker 1: one of those subtlest and most ingenious of cryptograms, in
• 1:17:08
Speaker 1: which many separate lists of corresponding letters are arranged like
• 1:17:12
Speaker 1: the multiplication table, and the message built up with arbitrary
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: keywords known only to the initiated. The older authority seemed
• 1:17:20
Speaker 1: rather more helpful than the newer ones, and Armitage concluded
• 1:17:24
Speaker 1: that the code of the manuscript was one of great antiquity,
• 1:17:27
Speaker 1: no doubt, handed down through a long line of mystical experimenters.
• 1:17:32
Speaker 1: Several times he seemed near daylight, only to be set
• 1:17:35
Speaker 1: back by some unforeseen obstacle. Then, as September approached, the
• 1:17:41
Speaker 1: clouds began to clear. Certain letters as used in certain
• 1:17:45
Speaker 1: parts of the manuscript emerged definitely and unmistakably, and it
• 1:17:50
Speaker 1: became obvious that the text was indeed in English. On
• 1:17:54
Speaker 1: the evening of September second, the last major barrier gave way,
• 1:17:58
Speaker 1: and doctor Armitage read for the first time a continuous
• 1:18:01
Speaker 1: passage of Wilburg Wait these annals. It was, in truth
• 1:18:05
Speaker 1: a diary, as all had thought, and it was couched
• 1:18:08
Speaker 1: in a style clearly showing the mixed occult erudition and
• 1:18:12
Speaker 1: general illiteracy of the strange being who wrote it. Almost
• 1:18:16
Speaker 1: the first long passage that Armitage deciphered and entry, dated
• 1:18:20
Speaker 1: November twenty sixth, nineteen sixteen, proved highly startling and disquieting.
• 1:18:26
Speaker 1: It was written, he remembered, by a child of three
• 1:18:28
Speaker 1: and a half who looked like a lad of twelve
• 1:18:31
Speaker 1: or thirteen. To day learned the Aclo for the Sabboth.
• 1:18:36
Speaker 1: It ran, which did not like it being answerable from
• 1:18:40
Speaker 1: the hill and not from the air. That upstairs more
• 1:18:43
Speaker 1: ahead of me than I thought it would be, and
• 1:18:46
Speaker 1: is not like to have much earth. Brain shot Elim
• 1:18:50
Speaker 1: Hutchinson's Collie Jack when he went to bite me, and
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: Elim says he would culle me if he dashed. I
• 1:18:55
Speaker 1: guess he won't. Grandfather kept me saying the dough formula
• 1:18:59
Speaker 1: last night, and I think I saw the inner city
• 1:19:02
Speaker 1: at the two magnetic poles. I shall go to those
• 1:19:05
Speaker 1: poles when the earth is cleared off, if I can't
• 1:19:08
Speaker 1: break through with the dough Na formula when I commit it.
• 1:19:13
Speaker 1: They from the air told me at Sabbath that it
• 1:19:15
Speaker 1: will be years before I can clear off the earth,
• 1:19:18
Speaker 1: and I guess Grandfather will be dead then. So I
• 1:19:21
Speaker 1: shall have to learn all the angles of the planes
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: and all the formulas between the Yur and the Ningur.
• 1:19:28
Speaker 1: They from outside will help, but they cannot take body
• 1:19:32
Speaker 1: without human blood. That upstairs looks it will have the
• 1:19:35
Speaker 1: right cast. I can see it a little when I
• 1:19:38
Speaker 1: make the Urish sign or blow the power of iban
• 1:19:41
Speaker 1: Ghazi at it. And it is near like them that
• 1:19:44
Speaker 1: may eve on the hill. The other face may wear
• 1:19:47
Speaker 1: off some. I wonder how I shall look when the
• 1:19:50
Speaker 1: earth is cleared and there are no earth beings on it.
• 1:19:53
Speaker 1: He that came with the Aklosabboth said I may be transfigured.
• 1:19:58
Speaker 1: There being much of outside to work on, morning found
• 1:20:02
Speaker 1: doctor Armitage in a cold sweat of terror and a
• 1:20:05
Speaker 1: frenzy of wakeful concentration. He had not left the manuscript
• 1:20:09
Speaker 1: all night, but sat at his table under the electric light,
• 1:20:13
Speaker 1: turning page after page with shaking hands as fast as
• 1:20:17
Speaker 1: he could decipher the cryptic text. He had nervously telephoned
• 1:20:21
Speaker 1: his wife he would not be home, and when she
• 1:20:23
Speaker 1: brought him a breakfast from the house, he could scarcely
• 1:20:26
Speaker 1: dispose of a mouthful. All that day he read on
• 1:20:30
Speaker 1: now and then halted maddeningly as a reapplication of the
• 1:20:33
Speaker 1: complex key became necessary. Lunch and dinner were brought him,
• 1:20:38
Speaker 1: but he ate only the smallest fraction of either. Toward
• 1:20:42
Speaker 1: the middle of the next night, he drowsed off in
• 1:20:44
Speaker 1: his chair, but soon woke out of a tangle of nightmares,
• 1:20:48
Speaker 1: almost as hideous as the truths and menaces to man's
• 1:20:51
Speaker 1: existence that he had uncovered. On the morning of September fourth,
• 1:20:56
Speaker 1: Professor Rice and doctor Morgan insisted on seeing him for
• 1:21:00
Speaker 1: a while, and departed trembling and ashen gray. That evening,
• 1:21:04
Speaker 1: he went to bed, but slept only fitfully. Wednesday, the
• 1:21:09
Speaker 1: next day, he was back at the manuscript and began
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: to take copious notes, both from the current sections and
• 1:21:15
Speaker 1: from those he had already deciphered. In the small hours
• 1:21:19
Speaker 1: of that night, he slept a little in an easy
• 1:21:22
Speaker 1: chair in his office, but was at the manuscript again
• 1:21:25
Speaker 1: before dawn. Some time before noon, his physician, doctor Hartwell
• 1:21:30
Speaker 1: called to see him and insisted that he cease work.
• 1:21:34
Speaker 1: He refused, intimating that it was of the most vital
• 1:21:37
Speaker 1: importance for him to complete the reading of the diary,
• 1:21:40
Speaker 1: and promising an explanation in due course of time. That evening,
• 1:21:45
Speaker 1: just as twilight fell, he finished his terrible perusal and
• 1:21:49
Speaker 1: sank back exhausted. His wife, bringing his dinner, found him
• 1:21:54
Speaker 1: in a half comatose state, but he was conscious enough
• 1:21:57
Speaker 1: to warn her off with a sharp cry when he
• 1:21:59
Speaker 1: saw her eyes wandered toward the notes he had taken weekly. Rising,
• 1:22:04
Speaker 1: he gathered up the scribbled papers and sealed them all
• 1:22:07
Speaker 1: in a great envelope, which he immediately placed in his
• 1:22:10
Speaker 1: inside coat pocket. He had sufficient strength to get home,
• 1:22:14
Speaker 1: but was so clearly in need of medical aid that
• 1:22:16
Speaker 1: doctor Hartwell was summoned at once. As the doctor put
• 1:22:20
Speaker 1: him to bed, he could only mutter, over and over again,
• 1:22:23
Speaker 1: but what in God's name can we do? Doctor Armitage slept,
• 1:22:29
Speaker 1: but was partly delirious. The next day. He made no
• 1:22:32
Speaker 1: explanations to Heartwell, but in his calmer moments, spoke of
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: the imperative need of a long conference with Rice and Morgan.
• 1:22:40
Speaker 1: His wilder wanderings were very startling, indeed, including frantic appeals
• 1:22:45
Speaker 1: that something in a boarded up farmhouse be destroyed, and
• 1:22:48
Speaker 1: fantastic references to some plan for the extirpation of the
• 1:22:52
Speaker 1: entire human race and all animal and vegetable life from
• 1:22:55
Speaker 1: the Earth by some terrible elder race of beings from
• 1:22:58
Speaker 1: another dimension. He would shout that the world was in danger,
• 1:23:02
Speaker 1: since the elder things wished to strip it and drag
• 1:23:05
Speaker 1: it away from the solar system and cosmos of matter
• 1:23:08
Speaker 1: into some other plain or phase of entity from which
• 1:23:11
Speaker 1: it had once fallen vegenttillions of eons ago. At other
• 1:23:16
Speaker 1: times he would call for the dreaded Necronomicon and the
• 1:23:19
Speaker 1: demonolatreea of Remigius, in which he seemed hopeful of finding
• 1:23:24
Speaker 1: some formula to check the peril he conjured up. Stop them,
• 1:23:28
Speaker 1: Stop them, he would shout, those weightleys meant to let
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: them in, and the worst of all is left. Tell
• 1:23:36
Speaker 1: Rice and Morgan, we must do something. It's a blind business,
• 1:23:40
Speaker 1: but I know how to make the powder. It hasn't
• 1:23:43
Speaker 1: been fed since the second of August when Wilbur came
• 1:23:47
Speaker 1: here to his death, and at that rate, but Armitage
• 1:23:51
Speaker 1: had a sound physique, despite his seventy three years, had
• 1:23:54
Speaker 1: slept off his disorder that night without developing any real fever.
• 1:23:59
Speaker 1: He woke late Friday, clear of head, though sober, with
• 1:24:03
Speaker 1: a gnawing fear and tremendous sense of responsibility. Saturday afternoon
• 1:24:09
Speaker 1: he felt able to go over to the library and
• 1:24:11
Speaker 1: summon Rice and Morgan for a conference. And the rest
• 1:24:14
Speaker 1: of that day and evening the three men tortured their
• 1:24:17
Speaker 1: brains in the wildest speculation and the most desperate debate.
• 1:24:21
Speaker 1: Strange and terrible books were drawn voluminously from the stack
• 1:24:25
Speaker 1: shelves and from secure places of storage, and diagrams and
• 1:24:29
Speaker 1: formulae were copied with feverish haste, and in bewildering abundance
• 1:24:34
Speaker 1: of skepticism there was none. All three had seen the
• 1:24:38
Speaker 1: body of Wilburg Waiteley as it lay on the floor
• 1:24:40
Speaker 1: in a room of that very building, and after that
• 1:24:43
Speaker 1: not one of them could feel even slightly inclined to
• 1:24:46
Speaker 1: treat the diary as a madman's raving. Opinions were divided
• 1:24:51
Speaker 1: as to notifying the Massachusetts State Police, and the negative
• 1:24:54
Speaker 1: finally won. There were things involved which simply could not
• 1:24:58
Speaker 1: be believed by those who had not a sample as
• 1:25:01
Speaker 1: indeed was made clear during certain subsequent investigations. Late at night,
• 1:25:06
Speaker 1: the conference disbanded without having developed a definite plan. But
• 1:25:10
Speaker 1: all day Sunday Armitage was busy comparing formulae and mixing
• 1:25:14
Speaker 1: chemicals obtained from the College laboratory. The more he reflected
• 1:25:19
Speaker 1: on the hellish Diary, the more he was inclined to
• 1:25:21
Speaker 1: doubt the efficacy of any material agent in stamping out
• 1:25:24
Speaker 1: the entity which Wilburg Witley had left behind him, the
• 1:25:28
Speaker 1: earth threatening entity which unknown to him was to burst
• 1:25:31
Speaker 1: forth in a few hours and become the memorable Dunwich horror.
• 1:25:37
Speaker 1: Monday was a repetition of Sunday with doctor Armitage, for
• 1:25:40
Speaker 1: the task in hand required an infinity of research and experiment.
• 1:25:45
Speaker 1: Further consultations of the Monstrous Diary brought about various changes
• 1:25:49
Speaker 1: of plan, and he knew that even in the end,
• 1:25:52
Speaker 1: a large amount of uncertainty must remain. By Tuesday, he
• 1:25:56
Speaker 1: had a definite line of action mapped out and believed
• 1:25:59
Speaker 1: he would try a trip to Dunwich within a week.
• 1:26:02
Speaker 1: Then on Wednesday, the great shock came. Tucked obscurely away
• 1:26:07
Speaker 1: in a corner of the Arkham Advertiser, was a facetious
• 1:26:10
Speaker 1: little item from the Associated Press telling what a record
• 1:26:13
Speaker 1: breaking monster the bootleg Whiskey of Dunwich had raised up. Armitage,
• 1:26:18
Speaker 1: half stunned, could only telephone for Rice and Morgan. Far
• 1:26:22
Speaker 1: into the night. They discussed, and the next day was
• 1:26:25
Speaker 1: a whirlwind of preparation on the part of them all.
• 1:26:29
Speaker 1: Armitage knew he would be meddling with terrible powers, yet
• 1:26:33
Speaker 1: saw that there was no other way to annul the
• 1:26:36
Speaker 1: deeper and more malign meddling which others had done before him.
• 1:26:43
Speaker 1: Nine Friday morning, Armitage, Rice and Morgan set out by
• 1:26:48
Speaker 1: mortar for Dunwich, arriving at the village about one in
• 1:26:51
Speaker 1: the afternoon. The day was pleasant, but even in the
• 1:26:55
Speaker 1: brightest sunlight, a kind of quiet, dread and portent seemed
• 1:26:59
Speaker 1: to hover about the strangely domed hills and the deep,
• 1:27:02
Speaker 1: shadowy ravines of the stricken region. Now and then on
• 1:27:07
Speaker 1: some mountain top, a gaunt circle of stones could be
• 1:27:10
Speaker 1: glimpsed against the sky from the air of hushed fright.
• 1:27:14
Speaker 1: At Osborne's store, they knew something hideous had happened, and
• 1:27:18
Speaker 1: soon learned of the annihilation of the Ilmer Frye house
• 1:27:21
Speaker 1: and family. Throughout that afternoon they rode around Dunwich, questioning
• 1:27:26
Speaker 1: the natives concerning all that had occurred, and seeing for
• 1:27:30
Speaker 1: themselves with rising pangs of horror, the drear fry ruins,
• 1:27:34
Speaker 1: with their lingering traces of the tari stickiness, the blasphemous
• 1:27:38
Speaker 1: tracks in the fry yard, the wounded seth bishop cattle,
• 1:27:42
Speaker 1: and the enormous swaths of disturbed vegetation in various places.
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: The trail up and down Sentinel Hill seemed to armitage
• 1:27:50
Speaker 1: of almost cataclysmic significance, and he looked long at the
• 1:27:53
Speaker 1: sinister altar like stone on the summit. At length, the
• 1:27:58
Speaker 1: visitors of a party of state police, which had come
• 1:28:02
Speaker 1: from Aylesbury that morning in response to the first telephone
• 1:28:05
Speaker 1: reports of the fry tragedy, decided to seek out the
• 1:28:08
Speaker 1: officers and compare notes as far as practicable. This, however,
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: they found more easily planned than performed, since no sign
• 1:28:17
Speaker 1: of the party could be found in any direction. There
• 1:28:20
Speaker 1: had been five of them in a car, but now
• 1:28:22
Speaker 1: the car stood empty near the ruins in the fry yard.
• 1:28:25
Speaker 1: The natives, all of whom had talked with the policemen,
• 1:28:28
Speaker 1: seemed at first as perplexed as Armitage and his companions.
• 1:28:33
Speaker 1: Then Old Sam Hutchins thought of something and turned pale,
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: nudging Fred Farr and pointing to the dank, deep hollow
• 1:28:40
Speaker 1: that yawned close by God, he gasped, I tell them
• 1:28:45
Speaker 1: not to go down into the glen, and I never
• 1:28:48
Speaker 1: thought nobody'd do it with them tracks and that smell,
• 1:28:50
Speaker 1: and the whipper wheels of screech and down dar in
• 1:28:52
Speaker 1: the dark and noonday. A cold shudder ran through the
• 1:28:56
Speaker 1: natives and visitors alike, and every ear seemed strange in
• 1:29:00
Speaker 1: a kind of instinctive, unconscious listening. Armitage, now that he
• 1:29:05
Speaker 1: had actually come upon the horror and its monstrous work,
• 1:29:08
Speaker 1: trembled with the responsibility he felt to be his Night
• 1:29:12
Speaker 1: would soon fall, and it was then that the mountainous
• 1:29:15
Speaker 1: Blasphemy lumbered upon its eldridge course Negotium perambulance in Tenebris.
• 1:29:22
Speaker 1: The old librarian rehearsed the formulae he had memorized, and
• 1:29:26
Speaker 1: clutched the paper containing the alternative ones he had not memorized.
• 1:29:30
Speaker 1: He saw that his electric flashlight was in working order.
• 1:29:34
Speaker 1: Rice beside him took from a valise a metal sprayer
• 1:29:37
Speaker 1: of the sort used in combating insects, whilst Morgan uncased
• 1:29:42
Speaker 1: the big game rifle on which he relied, despite his
• 1:29:45
Speaker 1: colleague's warnings that no material weapon would be of help. Armitage,
• 1:29:50
Speaker 1: having read the Hideous Diary, knew painfully well what kind
• 1:29:54
Speaker 1: of a manifestation to expect, but he did not add
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: to the fright of the Dunwich people by giving any
• 1:29:59
Speaker 1: hint or clues. He hoped that it might be conquered
• 1:30:04
Speaker 1: without any revelation to the world of the monstrous thing
• 1:30:07
Speaker 1: it had escaped. As the shadows gathered, the natives commenced
• 1:30:12
Speaker 1: to disperse homeward, anxious to bar themselves indoors, despite the
• 1:30:16
Speaker 1: present evidence that all human locks and bolts were useless
• 1:30:20
Speaker 1: before a force that could bend trees and crush houses
• 1:30:23
Speaker 1: when it chose. They shook their heads at the visitor's
• 1:30:26
Speaker 1: plan to stand guard at the fry ruins near the glen,
• 1:30:29
Speaker 1: and as they left, had little expectancy of ever seeing
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: the watchers again. There were rumblings under the hills that night,
• 1:30:38
Speaker 1: and the whipperwheels piped threateningly. Once in a while, a
• 1:30:42
Speaker 1: wind sweeping up out of cold Spring Glen would bring
• 1:30:45
Speaker 1: a touch of ineffable fetter to the heavy night air
• 1:30:49
Speaker 1: such a fetter, as all three of the watchers had
• 1:30:52
Speaker 1: smelled once before when they stood above a dying thing
• 1:30:56
Speaker 1: that had passed for fifteen years and a half as
• 1:30:58
Speaker 1: a human being. But the looked for terror did not appear.
• 1:31:03
Speaker 1: Whatever was down there in the glen was biting its time,
• 1:31:06
Speaker 1: and Armitage told his colleagues it would be suicidal to
• 1:31:10
Speaker 1: try to attack it in the dark. Morning came wanly
• 1:31:14
Speaker 1: and the night sound ceased. It was a gray, bleak
• 1:31:18
Speaker 1: day with now and then a drizzle of rain, and
• 1:31:21
Speaker 1: heavier and heavier clouds seemed to be piling themselves up
• 1:31:24
Speaker 1: beyond the hills to the northwest. The men from Arkham
• 1:31:28
Speaker 1: were undecided what to do. Seeking shelter from the increasing
• 1:31:32
Speaker 1: rainfall beneath one of the few undestroyed fry outbuildings, they
• 1:31:36
Speaker 1: debated the wisdom of waiting or of taking the aggressive
• 1:31:40
Speaker 1: and going down into the glen in quest of their nameless,
• 1:31:43
Speaker 1: monstrous quarry. The downpour waxed in heaviness, and distant peals
• 1:31:48
Speaker 1: of thunder sounded from far horizons. Sheet lightning shimmered, and
• 1:31:53
Speaker 1: then a forky bolt flashed near at hand, as if
• 1:31:57
Speaker 1: descending into the accursed glen itself. The sky grew very dark,
• 1:32:02
Speaker 1: and the watchers hoped that the storm would prove a short,
• 1:32:04
Speaker 1: sharp one, followed by clear weather. It was still gruesomely
• 1:32:09
Speaker 1: dark when not much over an hour later a confused
• 1:32:13
Speaker 1: babble of voices sounded down the road. Another moment brought
• 1:32:17
Speaker 1: to view a frightened group of more than a dozen
• 1:32:19
Speaker 1: men running, shouting, and even whimpering hysterically. Some one in
• 1:32:24
Speaker 1: the lead began sobbing out words, and the Arkham men
• 1:32:27
Speaker 1: started violently. When those words developed a coherent form, Oh
• 1:32:32
Speaker 1: my god, my god, the voice choked out, it's a
• 1:32:36
Speaker 1: goin again, and this time by day it's out. It's out,
• 1:32:40
Speaker 1: and a move in this very minute, and only the
• 1:32:43
Speaker 1: Lord knows when it'll be on us all. The speaker
• 1:32:47
Speaker 1: panted into silence, but another took up his message. Nigh
• 1:32:51
Speaker 1: on an hour ago, zeb Waitley here heard the phone
• 1:32:53
Speaker 1: a ringing, and it was Miss Corey, George's wife that
• 1:32:57
Speaker 1: lives down by the junction. She says. The higher boy
• 1:33:00
Speaker 1: Luther was out driving in the cows from the storm
• 1:33:03
Speaker 1: arter the big bolt. When he sees all the trees
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: a bending at the mouth of the glen, opposite side
• 1:33:09
Speaker 1: for this, and smelt the same awful smell like he
• 1:33:12
Speaker 1: smelt when he found the big tracks last Monday mornin',
• 1:33:16
Speaker 1: and she says, he says there was a swishin' lappin'
• 1:33:19
Speaker 1: sound more nor what the bendin' trees and bushes could make.
• 1:33:23
Speaker 1: And all on a sudden, the trees along the rud
• 1:33:25
Speaker 1: begun to get pushed one side, and there was an
• 1:33:28
Speaker 1: awful stompin' and splashing in the mud. But Manya, Luther,
• 1:33:32
Speaker 1: he didn't see nothing at all, only just a bendin'
• 1:33:35
Speaker 1: trees and underbrush. Then fur ahead where Bishop's Brook goes
• 1:33:40
Speaker 1: under the rud, he heard an awful creakin and straining
• 1:33:43
Speaker 1: on the bridge, and says he could tell the sound
• 1:33:47
Speaker 1: of wood a starting to crack and split, and all
• 1:33:50
Speaker 1: the whiles he never see a thing, only them trees
• 1:33:53
Speaker 1: and bushes a bending. And when the swishing sound got
• 1:33:57
Speaker 1: very fur off on the rud towards Wizerweitly and Sentinel Hill,
• 1:34:01
Speaker 1: Luther he had the gutster step up where he heard
• 1:34:04
Speaker 1: it fust and look at the ground. It was all
• 1:34:07
Speaker 1: mud and water, and the sky was dark and the
• 1:34:09
Speaker 1: ring was wiping out all tracks about as fast as
• 1:34:12
Speaker 1: could be. But beginner at the glenmouth where the tree's
• 1:34:16
Speaker 1: bed moved, they were still some of them awful prints,
• 1:34:20
Speaker 1: big as barrels, like he's seen Monday. At this point
• 1:34:24
Speaker 1: the first excited speaker interrupted, But that ain't the trouble, now,
• 1:34:29
Speaker 1: that was only the start. Zeb here was calling folks up,
• 1:34:32
Speaker 1: and everybody was a listening in. When a call from
• 1:34:35
Speaker 1: Seth Bishop's cut in. His housekeeper Sally was carrying on
• 1:34:39
Speaker 1: fit to kill. She just see the trees a bending
• 1:34:42
Speaker 1: beside the rud, and says there was a kind of
• 1:34:45
Speaker 1: mushy sound like an elephant puffin and treadin aheadin for
• 1:34:49
Speaker 1: the house. Then she up and spoke sudden of a
• 1:34:52
Speaker 1: fearful smell, and says her boy Chancy was a screamin'
• 1:34:56
Speaker 1: as how was just like what he smelt up to
• 1:34:58
Speaker 1: the weightly ruins day mornin', and the dogs was all
• 1:35:02
Speaker 1: barking and whining awful. And then she let out a
• 1:35:06
Speaker 1: terrible yell and says, the shed down the rud had
• 1:35:09
Speaker 1: just caved in, like the storm had blown it over.
• 1:35:13
Speaker 1: Only the wind want strong enough to do that. Everybody
• 1:35:17
Speaker 1: was listening and you could hear lots of folks on
• 1:35:19
Speaker 1: the wire a gasping all to once Sally she yielded
• 1:35:23
Speaker 1: again and says, the front yard picket fence bed just
• 1:35:26
Speaker 1: crumpled up, though they want no sign o what done it.
• 1:35:30
Speaker 1: Then everybody on the line could hear Chancy and old
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: Seth Bishop are yelling too, and Sally was shrieking out
• 1:35:36
Speaker 1: that something heavy had struck the house, not lightning nor nothing,
• 1:35:41
Speaker 1: but somethin heavy. Again the front that kept a launching
• 1:35:44
Speaker 1: itself again and again, though you couldn't see nothing out
• 1:35:48
Speaker 1: the front winders. And then and then lines of fright
• 1:35:53
Speaker 1: deepened on every face. An armitage, shaken as he was,
• 1:35:56
Speaker 1: had barely poison enough to prompt the speaker. And then
• 1:36:01
Speaker 1: Sally she yelled out, oh help, the house is a
• 1:36:04
Speaker 1: cavin inn. And on the wire we could horror a
• 1:36:07
Speaker 1: durable crashing and a whole flock of screamin, just like
• 1:36:11
Speaker 1: when Elmer Fry's place was took only wus The man paused,
• 1:36:16
Speaker 1: and another of the crowd spoke, that's all not a
• 1:36:20
Speaker 1: sound nor squeak over the phone, ardered that just steal
• 1:36:24
Speaker 1: like we that heard it, got out fords and wagons
• 1:36:27
Speaker 1: and rounded up as many able bodied men folks as
• 1:36:30
Speaker 1: we could get at Corey's place and come up here.
• 1:36:32
Speaker 1: Ter see what you thought best. Ter do not, but
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: what I think. It's the Lord's judgment for our iniquities
• 1:36:38
Speaker 1: that no mortal can ever set aside. Armitage saw that
• 1:36:43
Speaker 1: the time for positive action had come and spoke decisively
• 1:36:46
Speaker 1: to the faltering group of frightened rustics. We must follow it, boys,
• 1:36:52
Speaker 1: He made his voice as reassuring as possible. I believe
• 1:36:55
Speaker 1: there's a chance of putting it out of business. You
• 1:36:58
Speaker 1: men know that those weight were wizards. Well, this thing
• 1:37:02
Speaker 1: is a thing of wizardry and must be put down
• 1:37:05
Speaker 1: by the same means. I've seen wilburh Waitey's diary and
• 1:37:09
Speaker 1: read some of the strange old books he used to read,
• 1:37:12
Speaker 1: and I think I know the right kind of spell
• 1:37:14
Speaker 1: to recite to make the thing fade away. Of course,
• 1:37:18
Speaker 1: one can't be sure, but we can always take a chance.
• 1:37:22
  Speaker 1: It's invisible. I knew it would be, but there's a
• 1:37:25
Speaker 1: powder in this long distant sprayer that might make it
• 1:37:28
Speaker 1: show up for a second. Later on, we'll try it.
• 1:37:32
Speaker 1: It's a frightful thing to have alive, but it isn't
• 1:37:35
Speaker 1: as bad as what Wilbur would have let in if
• 1:37:37
Speaker 1: he'd live longer. You'll never know what the world has escaped. Now.
• 1:37:42
Speaker 1: We've only this one thing to fight, and it can't multiply.
• 1:37:46
Speaker 1: It can, though, do a lot of harm. So we
• 1:37:49
Speaker 1: mustn't hesitate to rid the community of it. We must
• 1:37:53
Speaker 1: follow it. And the way to begin is to go
• 1:37:55
Speaker 1: to the place that has just been wrecked. Let somebody
• 1:37:59
Speaker 1: lead the way. I don't know your roads very well,
• 1:38:02
Speaker 1: but I've an idea there might be a shorter cut
• 1:38:05
Speaker 1: across lots. How about it? The men shuffled about a moment,
• 1:38:09
Speaker 1: and then Earl Sawyer spoke softly, pointing with a grimy
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: finger through the steadily lessening rain. I guess ye can
• 1:38:18
Speaker 1: get to seth Bishop's quickest by cutting across the lower
• 1:38:21
Speaker 1: meado here, wading the brook at the low place, and
• 1:38:24
Speaker 1: climbing through Carrier's mowing and the timber lot beyond that
• 1:38:27
Speaker 1: comes out on the upper rud Mighty Nia Sys a
• 1:38:31
Speaker 1: little t'other side. Armitage with Rice and Morgan started to
• 1:38:35
Speaker 1: walk in the direction indicated, and most of the natives
• 1:38:38
Speaker 1: followed slowly. The sky was growing lighter, and there were
• 1:38:42
Speaker 1: signs that the storm had worn itself away. When Armitage
• 1:38:46
Speaker 1: indvertently took a wrong direction, Joe Osborne warned him and
• 1:38:49
Speaker 1: walked ahead to show the right one. Courage and confidence
• 1:38:53
Speaker 1: were mounting though the twilight of the almost perpendicular wooded hill,
• 1:38:57
Speaker 1: which lay toward the end of their short cuts, and
• 1:39:00
Speaker 1: among whose fantastic ancient trees they had to scramble as
• 1:39:03
Speaker 1: if up a ladder, put these qualities to a severe test.
• 1:39:08
Speaker 1: At length, they emerged on a muddy road to find
• 1:39:10
Speaker 1: the sun coming out. They were a little beyond the
• 1:39:13
Speaker 1: seth Bishop Place, but bent trees and hideously unmistakable tracks
• 1:39:18
Speaker 1: showed what had passed by. Only a few moments were
• 1:39:21
Speaker 1: consumed in surveying the ruins just around the bend. It
• 1:39:25
Speaker 1: was the Fry incident all over again, and nothing dead
• 1:39:28
Speaker 1: or living was found in either of the collapsed shells
• 1:39:31
Speaker 1: which had been the Bishop House and barn. No one
• 1:39:35
Speaker 1: cared to remain there amidst the stench and tarry stickiness,
• 1:39:38
Speaker 1: but all turned instinctively to the line of horrible prints
• 1:39:42
Speaker 1: leading on toward the wrecked, weighty farmhouse and the altar
• 1:39:45
Speaker 1: crowned slopes of Sentinel Hill. As the men passed the
• 1:39:50
Speaker 1: sight of Wilburg Witley's abode, they shuddered visibly and seemed
• 1:39:54
Speaker 1: again to mix hesitancy with their zeal. It was no joke,
• 1:39:58
Speaker 1: tracking down something as big as a house that one
• 1:40:00
Speaker 1: could not see, but that had all the vicious malevolence
• 1:40:04
Speaker 1: of a demon. Opposite the base of Sentinel Hill, the
• 1:40:07
Speaker 1: tracks left the road, and there was a fresh bending
• 1:40:10
Speaker 1: and matting visible along the broad swathe marking the monster's
• 1:40:14
Speaker 1: former route to and from the summit. Armitage produced a
• 1:40:19
Speaker 1: pocket telescope of considerable power and scanned the steep green
• 1:40:23
Speaker 1: side of the hill. Then he handed the instrument to Morgan,
• 1:40:26
Speaker 1: whose sight was keener. After a moment of gazing, Morgan
• 1:40:30
Speaker 1: cried out, sharply, passing the glass to Earl Sawyer and
• 1:40:34
Speaker 1: indicating a certain spot on the slope with his finger. Sawyer,
• 1:40:38
Speaker 1: as clumsy as most non users of optical devices are,
• 1:40:42
Speaker 1: fumbled awhile, but eventually focused the lenses with Armitage's aid.
• 1:40:47
Speaker 1: When he did so, his cry was less restrained than
• 1:40:50
Speaker 1: Morgan's had been. God, Almighty, the grass and bushes is moving.
• 1:40:56
Speaker 1: It's a goin up, slow like creeping up to the
• 1:40:59
Speaker 1: top this minute. Heaven only knows what fur. Then the
• 1:41:03
Speaker 1: germ of panic seemed to spread among the seekers. It
• 1:41:07
Speaker 1: was one thing to chase the nameless entity, but quite
• 1:41:10
Speaker 1: another to find it. Spells might be all right, but
• 1:41:14
Speaker 1: suppose they weren't. Voices began questioning Armitage about what he
• 1:41:19
Speaker 1: knew of the thing, and no reply seemed quite to satisfy.
• 1:41:24
Speaker 1: Everyone seemed to feel himself in close proximity to faces
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: of nature, and of being utterly forbidden and wholly outside
• 1:41:31
Speaker 1: the sane experience of mankind. Ten. In the end, the
• 1:41:39
Speaker 1: three men from Arkham, old white bearded doctor Armitage, stocky
• 1:41:44
Speaker 1: iron gray professor Rice, and lean youngish doctor Morgan ascended
• 1:41:49
Speaker 1: the mountain alone. After much patient instruction regarding its focusing
• 1:41:53
Speaker 1: and use. They left the telescope with the frightened group
• 1:41:56
Speaker 1: that remained in the road, and as they climbed they
• 1:41:59
Speaker 1: were watched closely by those among whom the glass was
• 1:42:02
Speaker 1: passed around. It was hard going, and Armitage had to
• 1:42:06
Speaker 1: be helped more than once. High above the toiling group,
• 1:42:10
Speaker 1: the great swath trembled as its hellish maker repassed with
• 1:42:14
Speaker 1: snail like deliberateness. Then it was obvious that the pursuers
• 1:42:18
Speaker 1: were gaining Curtis Weighty of the undecayed Branch, was holding
• 1:42:23
Speaker 1: the telescope when the Arkham party detoured radically from the swath.
• 1:42:28
Speaker 1: He told the crowd that the men were evidently trying
• 1:42:31
Speaker 1: to get to a subordinate peak, which overlooked the swath,
• 1:42:34
Speaker 1: at a point considerably ahead of where the shrubbery was
• 1:42:37
Speaker 1: now bending. This indeed proved to be true, and the
• 1:42:42
Speaker 1: party were seen to gain the minor elevation only a
• 1:42:45
Speaker 1: short time after the invisible blasphemy had passed it. Then
• 1:42:50
Speaker 1: Wesley Cory, who had taken the glass, cried out that
• 1:42:53
Speaker 1: Armitage was adjusting the sprayer which Rice held, and that
• 1:42:57
Speaker 1: something must be about to happen. The crowd stirred uneasily,
• 1:43:01
Speaker 1: recalling that this sprayer was expected to give the unseen
• 1:43:05
Speaker 1: horror a moment of his ability. Two or three men
• 1:43:08
Speaker 1: shut their eyes, but Curtis waitely snatched back the telescope
• 1:43:12
Speaker 1: and strained his vision to the utmost. He saw that Rice,
• 1:43:16
Speaker 1: from the party's point of vantage above and behind the entity,
• 1:43:19
Speaker 1: had an excellent chance of spreading the potent powder with
• 1:43:22
Speaker 1: marvelous effect. Those without the telescope saw only an instant's
• 1:43:27
Speaker 1: flash of gray cloud a cloud about the size of
• 1:43:30
Speaker 1: a moderately large building. Near the top of the mountain. Curtis,
• 1:43:34
Speaker 1: who had held the instrument, dropped it with a piercing
• 1:43:37
Speaker 1: shriek into the ankle deep mud of the road. He
• 1:43:41
Speaker 1: reeled and would have crumpled to the ground had not
• 1:43:43
Speaker 1: two or three others seized and steadied him. All he
• 1:43:47
Speaker 1: could do was moan, half inaudibly, Oh, oh, great God,
• 1:43:52
Speaker 1: that that there was a pandemonium of questioning, and only
• 1:43:57
Speaker 1: Henry Wheeler thought to rescue the fallen telescope and wipe
• 1:44:00
Speaker 1: it clean of mud. Curtis was past all coherence, and
• 1:44:04
Speaker 1: even isolated replies were almost too much for him. Bigger
• 1:44:09
Speaker 1: in the barn, all made of squirming ropes, hull things
• 1:44:13
Speaker 1: sort of shaped like a hen's egg, bigger than anything,
• 1:44:16
Speaker 1: with dozens of legs like hogsheads that half shut up
• 1:44:19
Speaker 1: when they stepped. Nothing solid about it, all like jelly,
• 1:44:24
Speaker 1: and made of separate rigular ropes pushed close together, great
• 1:44:29
Speaker 1: bulge and eyes all over it, ten or twenty mouths
• 1:44:32
Speaker 1: or trunks sticking out all along the sides, big as stovepipes,
• 1:44:36
Speaker 1: and all it tossing and opening and shutting, all gray
• 1:44:40
Speaker 1: with kinder blue or purple rings, and God in Heaven
• 1:44:44
Speaker 1: that half face on top. This final memory, whatever it was,
• 1:44:49
Speaker 1: proved too much for poor Curtis, and he collapsed completely
• 1:44:53
Speaker 1: before he could say more. Fred Farr and Will Hudgins
• 1:44:57
Speaker 1: carried him to the roadside and laid him on the
• 1:44:59
Speaker 1: damp grass. Henry Wheeler, trembling, turned the rescue telescope on
• 1:45:04
Speaker 1: the mountain to see what he might Through the lenses
• 1:45:07
Speaker 1: were discernible three tiny figures, apparently running toward the summit
• 1:45:11
Speaker 1: as fast as the steep incline allowed. Only these nothing more.
• 1:45:17
Speaker 1: Then everyone noticed a strangely unseasonable noise in the deep
• 1:45:20
Speaker 1: valley behind, and even in the underbrush of Sentinel Hill itself.
• 1:45:25
Speaker 1: It was the piping of unnumbered whipperwills, and in their
• 1:45:29
Speaker 1: shrill chorus there seemed to lurk a note of tense
• 1:45:32
Speaker 1: and evil expectancy. Earl Sawyer now took the telescope and
• 1:45:36
Speaker 1: reported the three figures as standing on the topmost ridge,
• 1:45:40
Speaker 1: virtually level with the altarstone, but at a considerable distance
• 1:45:44
Speaker 1: from it. One figure, he said, seemed to be raising
• 1:45:47
Speaker 1: its hands above its head at rhythmic intervals, and as
• 1:45:51
Speaker 1: Sawyer mentioned, the circumstance, the crowd seemed to hear a faint,
• 1:45:54
Speaker 1: half musical sound from the distance, as if a loud
• 1:45:58
Speaker 1: chant were accompanying the gestures. The weird silhouette on that
• 1:46:02
Speaker 1: remote peak must have been a spectacle of infinite grotesqueness
• 1:46:06
Speaker 1: and impressiveness, but no observer was in a mood for
• 1:46:09
Speaker 1: esthetic appreciation. I guess he's say in the spell, whispered
• 1:46:15
Speaker 1: Wheeler as he snatched back the telescope. The whipperwheels were
• 1:46:19
Speaker 1: piping wildly and in a singularly curious, irregular rhythm, quite
• 1:46:24
Speaker 1: unlike that of the visible ritual. Suddenly, the sunshine seemed
• 1:46:28
Speaker 1: to lessen, without the intervention of any discernible cloud. It
• 1:46:33
Speaker 1: was a very peculiar phenomenon, and was plainly marked by all.
• 1:46:37
Speaker 1: A rumbling sound seemed brewing beneath the hills, mixed strangely
• 1:46:41
Speaker 1: with a concordant rumbling which clearly came from the sky.
• 1:46:46
Speaker 1: Lightning flashed aloft, and the wondering crowd looked in vain
• 1:46:49
Speaker 1: for the portents of storm. The chanting of the men
• 1:46:52
Speaker 1: from Arkham now became unmistakable, and Wheelers saw through the
• 1:46:56
Speaker 1: glass that they were all raising their arms in the
• 1:46:59
Speaker 1: rhythmic incantapetion. From some farmhouse far away, came the frantic
• 1:47:04
Speaker 1: barking of dogs. The change in the quality of the
• 1:47:08
Speaker 1: daylight increased, and the crowd gazed about the horizon in wonder.
• 1:47:12
Speaker 1: A purplish darkness, born of nothing more than a spectral
• 1:47:15
Speaker 1: deepening of the sky's blue, pressed down upon the rumbling hills.
• 1:47:20
Speaker 1: Then the lightning flashed again, somewhat brighter than before, and
• 1:47:24
Speaker 1: the crowd fancied that it had showed a certain mistiness
• 1:47:27
Speaker 1: around the altar stone on the distant height. No one, however,
• 1:47:31
Speaker 1: had been using the telescope at that instant. The whipperwills
• 1:47:35
Speaker 1: continued their irregular pulsation, and the men of Dunwich braced
• 1:47:39
Speaker 1: themselves tensely against some imponderable menace with which the atmosphere
• 1:47:43
Speaker 1: seemed surcharged. Without warning, came those deep, cracked, raucous vocal
• 1:47:49
Speaker 1: sounds which will never leave the memory of the stricken
• 1:47:51
Speaker 1: group who heard them. Not from any human throat were
• 1:47:54
Speaker 1: they borne, for the organs of man can yield no
• 1:47:58
Speaker 1: such acoustic perversions. Rather, one would have said they came
• 1:48:02
Speaker 1: from the pit itself, had not their source been so
• 1:48:05
Speaker 1: unmistakably the altar stone on the peak. It is almost
• 1:48:09
Speaker 1: erroneous to call them sounds at all, since so much
• 1:48:13
Speaker 1: of their ghastly infro base timber spoke to dim seats
• 1:48:17
Speaker 1: of consciousness and terror, far subtler than the ear. Yet
• 1:48:21
Speaker 1: one must do so, since their form was indisputably, though vaguely,
• 1:48:25
Speaker 1: that of half articulate words. They were loud, loud as
• 1:48:29
Speaker 1: the rumblings and the thunder above which they echoed, Yet
• 1:48:33
Speaker 1: did they come from no visible being? And because imagination
• 1:48:37
Speaker 1: might suggest a conjectural source in the world of non
• 1:48:39
Speaker 1: visible beings, the huddled crowd at the mountain's base huddle
• 1:48:43
Speaker 1: still closer and winced, as if in expectation of a blow.
• 1:48:48
Speaker 2: Yug nai yug nai the.
• 1:48:51
Speaker 1: F k nagah yog soo'toth rang, the hideous croaking out
• 1:48:56
Speaker 1: of space yub think ye oh yeah nugurk. The speaking
• 1:49:04
Speaker 1: impulse seemed to falter here, as if some frightful psychic
• 1:49:08
Speaker 1: struggle were going on. Henry Wheeler strained his eye at
• 1:49:11
Speaker 1: the telescope, but saw only the three grotesquely silhouetted human
• 1:49:15
Speaker 1: figures on the peak, all moving their arms furiously in
• 1:49:19
Speaker 1: strange gestures as their incantation drew near its culmination. From
• 1:49:24
Speaker 1: what black whales of acarontic fear or feeling, from what
• 1:49:27
Speaker 1: unplumbed gulfs of extra cosmic consciousness or obscure long latent
• 1:49:32
Speaker 1: heredity were those half articulate thunder croakings drawn Presently they
• 1:49:37
Speaker 1: began to gather renewed force and coherence as they grew
• 1:49:41
Speaker 1: in stark utter ultimate frenzy.
• 1:49:44
Speaker 2: Eh yeah, yeah, yeah, yaha, yah yah yah ya luga
• 1:49:51
Speaker 2: lunga yo yo hoop hoop further father yog sothoth.
• 1:50:04
Speaker 1: But that was all. The pallid group in the road,
• 1:50:07
Speaker 1: still reading at the indisputably English syllables that had poured
• 1:50:10
Speaker 1: quickly and thunderously down from the frantic vacancy beside that
• 1:50:14
Speaker 1: shocking altarstone, were never to hear such syllables again. Instead,
• 1:50:19
Speaker 1: they jumped violently at the terrific report, which seemed to
• 1:50:22
Speaker 1: rend the hills the deafening cataclysmic peel whose source be
• 1:50:27
Speaker 1: it inner Earth or sky, no here was ever able
• 1:50:30
Speaker 1: to place. A single lightning bolt shot from the purple
• 1:50:34
Speaker 1: zenith to the altarstone, and a great tidal wave of
• 1:50:37
Speaker 1: viewless force and indescribable stench swept down from the hill

Speaker 1: to all the countryside. Trees, grass and underbrush were whipped
• 1:50:46
Speaker 1: into a fury, and the frightened crowd at the mountain's base,
• 1:50:49
Speaker 1: weakened by the lethal fetter that seemed about to asphyxiate them,
• 1:50:53
Speaker 1: were almost hurled off their feet. Dogs howled from the distance.
• 1:50:58
Speaker 1: Green grass and foliage wilted to a curious, sickly yellow gray,
• 1:51:02
Speaker 1: and overfield and forest were scattered the bodies of dead whipperwells.
• 1:51:08
Speaker 1: The stench left quickly, but the vegetation never came right again.
• 1:51:12
Speaker 1: To this day, there is something queer and unholy about
• 1:51:15
Speaker 1: the growth on and around that fearsome hill. Curtis Whiteley
• 1:51:19
Speaker 1: was only just regaining consciousness when the Arkha men came
• 1:51:22
Speaker 1: slowly down the mountain in the beams of a sunlight,
• 1:51:25
Speaker 1: once more brilliant and untainted. They were grave and quiet,
• 1:51:30
Speaker 1: and seemed shaken by memories and reflections even more terrible
• 1:51:33
Speaker 1: than those which had reduced the group of natives to
• 1:51:36
Speaker 1: a state of cowed quivering. In reply to a jumble
• 1:51:39
Speaker 1: of questions, they only shook their heads and reaffirmed one
• 1:51:43
Speaker 1: vital fact. The thing has gone forever. Armitage said, it
• 1:51:49
Speaker 1: has been split up into what it was originally made
• 1:51:51
Speaker 1: of and can never exist again. It was an impossibility
• 1:51:55
Speaker 1: in a normal world. Only the least fraction was really
• 1:51:59
Speaker 1: matter in any sense. We know. It was like its father,
• 1:52:03
Speaker 1: and most of it has gone back to him in
• 1:52:05
Speaker 1: some vague realm or dimension outside our material universe, some
• 1:52:10
Speaker 1: vague abyss out of which only the most accursed rites
• 1:52:14
Speaker 1: of human blasphemy could ever have called him. For a
• 1:52:16
Speaker 1: moment on the hills, there was a brief silence, and
• 1:52:21
Speaker 1: in that pause, the scattered senses of poor Curtis Wade
• 1:52:24
Speaker 1: began to knit back into a sort of continuity, so
• 1:52:27
Speaker 1: that he put his hands to his head with a moan.
• 1:52:30
Speaker 1: Memory seemed to pick itself up where it had left off,
• 1:52:33
Speaker 1: and the horror of the sight that had prostrated him
• 1:52:36
Speaker 1: burst in upon him again. Oh, oh my god, that
• 1:52:41
Speaker 1: half face, that half face on top of it, that
• 1:52:45
Speaker 1: face with the red eyes and creakly albino hair and
• 1:52:49
Speaker 1: no chin like the wheatlas. It was an octopus, centipede,
• 1:52:54
Speaker 1: spider kind of thing, but there was a half shaped
• 1:52:57
Speaker 1: man's face on top of it. It looked like wizard
• 1:53:01
Speaker 1: Weightley's only it was yards and yards across. He paused, exhausted,
• 1:53:07
Speaker 1: as the whole group of natives stared in a bewilderment
• 1:53:10
Speaker 1: not quite crystallized into fresh terror. Only Old Zebulon Weighty,
• 1:53:15
Speaker 1: who wanderingly remembered ancient things, but who had been silent
• 1:53:18
Speaker 1: heretofore spoke aloud. Fifteen year gone, he rambled. I heard
• 1:53:24
Speaker 1: Old Weightly say, as how some day we'd hear a child,
• 1:53:27
Speaker 1: old Viny's a call in his father's name on the
• 1:53:30
Speaker 1: top of Sentinel Hill. But Joe Osborne interrupted him to
• 1:53:34
Speaker 1: question the arkham Men anew What was it anyhow? And
• 1:53:39
Speaker 1: however did young wizard Weightly call it out of the air?
• 1:53:42
Speaker 1: It come from armitage. Chose his words carefully, It was well,
• 1:53:49
Speaker 1: it was mostly a kind of force that doesn't belong
• 1:53:52
Speaker 1: in our part of space, a kind of force that
• 1:53:55
Speaker 1: acts and grows and shapes itself by other laws than
• 1:53:58
Speaker 1: those of our sort of names. We have no business
• 1:54:02
Speaker 1: calling in such things from outside, and only very wicked
• 1:54:06
Speaker 1: people and very wicked cults, ever, try to. There was
• 1:54:10
Speaker 1: some of it in Wilburg Witley himself, enough to make
• 1:54:14
Speaker 1: a devil and a precocious monster of him, and to
• 1:54:17
Speaker 1: make his passing out a pretty terrible sight. I'm going
• 1:54:21
Speaker 1: to burn his accursed diary, And if you men are wise,
• 1:54:24
Speaker 1: you'll dynamite that altar stone up there and pull down
• 1:54:27
Speaker 1: all the rings of standing stones on the other hills.
• 1:54:31
Speaker 1: Things like that brought down the beings. Those weightleys were
• 1:54:34
Speaker 1: so fond of the beings they were going to lead
• 1:54:37
Speaker 1: intangibly to wipe out the human race and drag the
• 1:54:40
Speaker 1: earth off to some nameless place for some nameless purpose.
• 1:54:45
Speaker 1: But as to this thing, we've just set back the weight.
• 1:54:48
Speaker 1: Theees raised it for a terrible part in the doings
• 1:54:51
Speaker 1: that were to come. It grew fast and big from
• 1:54:54
Speaker 1: the same reason that Wilburg grew fast and big. But
• 1:54:58
Speaker 1: it beat him because it had greater share of the
• 1:55:01
Speaker 1: outsideness in it. You needn't ask how Wilbur called it
• 1:55:04
Speaker 1: out of the air. He didn't call it out. It
• 1:55:08
Speaker 1: was his twin brother. But it looked more like the

Speaker 1: Father than he did. The End of the Dunwich Horror
