- 0:00Welcome to the Doctor-Turned Health Coach Podcast. My name is Dr.
- 0:03Ashuri, family medicine doctor turned health coach.
- 0:07Today, we're going to talk about the power of consistency, persistence.
- 0:15Now, I know, listening to this on a podcast, it's just not that exciting,
- 0:20and I probably won't be able to get it across to you guys.
- 0:25But maybe I can give you some examples.
- 0:28And you can kind of see if in your life there's been some examples of your persistence,
- 0:34your consistency having paid off.
- 0:37When it comes to health, health is a long-term process.
- 0:42And while it's very difficult in our 20s and our 30s, even in our 40s,
- 0:47to see ourselves a few decades from now in our 60s, 70s, 80s,
- 0:52being healthy, being active, it's just a very hard thing to envision.
- 0:56It's a very hard thing to imagine the people
- 0:59who got there many just by
- 1:03pure chance just great genetics but i would
- 1:05say most most likely had a lot to do with it they they had they made a lot of
- 1:13decisions they made a lot of choices on a day-to-day basis that weren't huge
- 1:17they weren't massive these weren't the kind of choices where i would say oh
- 1:21my gosh like this guy made such a big sacrifice,
- 1:23spent years and hours in the gym.
- 1:25No, just these small, persistent, consistent habits.
- 1:31But they stuck with it. They didn't stop. And if you think back to any business you ever started,
- 1:38any artistic or athletic performance you ever excelled at, it was likely because
- 1:45you just did it on a consistent enough basis.
- 1:49It doesn't mean that you're performing at your best every single time when you show up.
- 1:54It's the fact that you show up every single time.
- 1:57And when you do stop, you get right back on it. You don't stop and then you
- 2:02forget about it for the next three years.
- 2:04I would say some of the best artists, some of the best musicians,
- 2:09some of the best painters, writers, doctors, artists.
- 2:14Anybody who's in sports, tennis stars, they were the kind of people who just kept doing it.
- 2:21Now, of course, it's much better and much, much easier if you really love it,
- 2:24if you really, really enjoy it.
- 2:26And yes, it's going to make it a lot easier for you to stick with something long term.
- 2:31I can give you an example in my own life. I love rock climbing,
- 2:34but there was a time when I think after the first few sessions,
- 2:40when you get a lot of really good results and you quickly go from a beginning climber,
- 2:45let's say a V0 rock climbing,
- 2:48bouldering person to like, ooh, I made it to a V3.
- 2:51Well, within that first year, you're likely going to lose the steam.
- 2:56But you do find something enjoyable about it and you kind of persist.
- 3:02You show up. You consistently go to the gym. You kind of keep showing up.
- 3:07Even though you're not making progress, maybe you're even regressing.
- 3:10And sure enough, after some time, you're going to have incredible results because the steam picks up.
- 3:16And because you showed up every single time, you figured out what you needed
- 3:20to do to consistently make some progress.
- 3:24I think that's one of the most powerful things that I've learned in my own personal journey.
- 3:28When it's come to building my own business, my own medical practice,
- 3:33my own health coaching practice, is it's the consistency of showing up,
- 3:38the persistence with maybe some of the more difficult things,
- 3:41but just showing up and doing it.
- 3:44When it comes to our health habits, it's just going to the rock climbing gym and climbing.
- 3:50It's just going to the exercise section of your gym and just getting on that
- 3:55bicycle and doing those spins, right?
- 3:57It's just doing it. And when you don't feel like doing it, you just still go and you do it.
- 4:03It's being able to get over that little bit of friction in the beginning,
- 4:07and once you do it long enough it does really become a habit
- 4:10it really really becomes a habit i can give you a great example of one of my
- 4:13clients who never believed that he could do meal prepping or get his food ready
- 4:19to be done so that he stopped eating out sure enough after just a few times
- 4:24he loved it he said it was so easy and we consistently kept him.
- 4:30Doing it. We consistently kept him making those dishes, putting those trays
- 4:34in the oven, getting that food
- 4:36ready ahead of time, because I knew if he didn't, he would lose the steam.
- 4:41And he's persisted. And it's been a few months, and he's going strong,
- 4:46and he's like, I don't even, I can't even imagine what it was like before.
- 4:49I just opened my fridge, and I know I got some good options, and I know I want those.
- 4:54And if he continues with that, I suspect he's going to have a lot of successes
- 4:59when it comes to how he eats and what he eats.
- 5:02I hope this content is of value. I hope that, again, I know it's not easy to
- 5:07convey the importance of being consistent, of doing something and not stopping,
- 5:11even if you want to give up, but just still doing it, even to some degree.
- 5:16But it's a valuable, valuable skill, and I hope that it pays off for you in the long run.
