- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:05Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning from the Virginia Mason Athletics. Hunter and Seahawks
- 0:09Speaker 2: Headquarters Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light.
- 0:12Speaker 2: As cold as the Rockies. The Seahawks returned from their
- 0:16Speaker 2: loss at Washington and their normal players day off yesterday
- 0:19Speaker 2: to practice for their game Sunday against the 0-3 Los
- 0:22Speaker 2: Angeles Chargers. Story of practice today is whether Julian Love's
- 0:26Speaker 2: going to be in it. Purple veteran safety missed the
- 0:29Speaker 2: Washington game with a calf injury. Coach Mike McDonald said
- 0:31Speaker 2: Monday that Love might practice this week. The coach talks
- 0:34Speaker 2: at noon here today. Amazon reportedly has a day to
- 0:37Speaker 2: extend Kirk Herbstreet as its television analyst for its Thursday
- 0:41Speaker 2: night NFL package. But The Athletic reports that the extension
- 0:44Speaker 2: has an out cause if Rams coach Sean McVay wants
- 0:46Speaker 2: to get into broadcasting. And it would be with Amazon.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Two days after the Mariners announced Dan Wilson is out
- 0:52Speaker 2: as manager, one day after Jerry DiPoto said the team
- 0:55Speaker 2: needs a new culture and leader from the outside the franchise,
- 0:57Speaker 2: multiple reports are that the M's top candidate is Arizona
- 1:02Speaker 2: Diamondbacks manager Torrey Lovello. Lovello's contract with Arizona just ended
- 1:06Speaker 2: when the Diamondbacks didn't make the playoffs. He said he
- 1:09Speaker 2: wants to stay in Arizona, but MLB.com reported that as
- 1:12Speaker 2: of this week, the team and the manager haven't talked
- 1:15Speaker 2: about a new deal in Arizona. So he, for now,
- 1:18Speaker 2: is a free agent. The MLB playoffs began yesterday with
- 1:21Speaker 2: game ones of the best of three wild card series.
- 1:23Speaker 2: The Braves beat the Phillies. The White Sox beat the
- 1:25Speaker 2: Trash Cans. The Yankees beat the Red Sox. And the
- 1:27Speaker 2: Padres beat the Cubs. Game twos of all those series today.
- 1:31Speaker 2: A chance for elimination games starting at 11 a.m. with
- 1:35Speaker 2: Philadelphia at Atlanta. The NHL season began last night. Five games,
- 1:38Speaker 2: including Vancouver, taking a three-goal lead at Edmonton. Blown it.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And the Canucks winning in overtime. A banger of a
- 1:44Speaker 2: game 6-5. The Kraken's opener is tomorrow, 6 p.m. at Calgary,
- 1:49Speaker 2: right here on your home of the Kraken, 93.3 KJR.
- 1:52Speaker 2: The Kraken's home opener is Sunday evening at Climate Pledge Arena,
- 1:55Speaker 2: also against Calgary, also right here on your home for
- 1:58Speaker 2: the Kraken. The Packers' offensive line is a mess. That's
- 2:01Speaker 2: why Green Bay has signed former Seahawks guard Laken Tomlinson.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Remember him? He's going to come off the practice squad.
- 2:07Speaker 2: He was on the Cowboys' practice squad at the beginning
- 2:09Speaker 2: of the season. Now he's signed to Green Bay's active roster.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Packers have also signed fellow former first-round pick Mekhi Becton.
- 2:16Speaker 2: to the practice squad. And today the Packers are signing
- 2:18Speaker 2: former first-round pick and guard Kevin Zeitler. Packs one and two.
- 2:22Speaker 2: That's why the NFL Flex Green Bay's game with Chicago
- 2:25Speaker 2: next week from the late Sunday to early Sunday afternoon
- 2:27Speaker 2: TV window. That clears the 49ers at the Seahawks for
- 2:31Speaker 2: the national game of the week on Fox late Sunday
- 2:33Speaker 2: afternoon window next week. Now on with the Wednesday show.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Greg Vo at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center and Justin
- 2:41Speaker 2: McIntyre is back at our Elliott Bay Studios in downtown Seattle.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Good morning, ma'am. Good morning.
- 2:45Speaker 3: How we doing?
- 2:46Speaker 2: We are okay. Yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 3: It's going to.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Be better when it's busy. It's all right. Midweek already.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Doesn't seem like it. September's gone. I mean, that's crazy. Yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I know.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I measure my life in minutes, seconds
- 3:03Speaker 4: and football games. So, yes, it is weird that, I mean,
- 3:07Speaker 4: you know, for the Seahawks, we're, you know, just barely
- 3:10Speaker 4: gracing the beginning of the season. But for me working
- 3:13Speaker 4: in college football, I'm like, we're a third of the
- 3:16Speaker 4: way done.
- 3:18Speaker 3: That's odd.
- 3:19Speaker 2: High school football in our state is almost halfway done. Right.
- 3:23Speaker 2: There's like eight or nine regular season games and then
- 3:25Speaker 2: they playoffs and. League playoffs and state playoffs. And, yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's crazy. We're already to October. Baseball's playoffs are starting.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Some say this is the best week of the calendar
- 3:38Speaker 2: year for sports. I'm not sure that's exactly true, but
- 3:41Speaker 2: I can see why people would say that. I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 2: baseball playoffs and college football and pro football. WNBA playoffs
- 3:48Speaker 2: have begun. The number one team, the Lynx in Minnesota,
- 3:51Speaker 2: is already out. New York Liberty ousted them.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Man, I remember the beginning of the season. It was
- 3:57Speaker 4: just like, oh, we're getting ready for summer. And now
- 3:59Speaker 4: we're like, oh, doom and gloom, fall.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Exactly. So that's actually a decent question to start the day. 49451,
- 4:07Speaker 2: you agree that October is the best sports month. Tomorrow
- 4:10Speaker 2: is October 1st.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It was a lot better last year for us.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah. We're going to talk about that, Jessamyn, about the
- 4:17Speaker 2: Mariners not being in the playoffs, which is why they're
- 4:19Speaker 2: looking for a new manager. We're going to dive deeper
- 4:22Speaker 2: into Tory Lavello and why the Mariners apparently are keenly
- 4:25Speaker 2: interested in him. to be their next manager out here
- 4:28Speaker 2: at Seahawks land. The Seahawks, they aren't chicken littling over
- 4:33Speaker 2: this loss at Washington. They talked after the game about
- 4:37Speaker 2: we know who we are, and Demarcus Lawrence talked in
- 4:40Speaker 2: the locker room about that, or the dark side defense.
- 4:43Speaker 2: We're not concerned. But they do have issues, and they're
- 4:46Speaker 2: seeking to fix some of those issues this week. One
- 4:50Speaker 2: of the issues, Chuck brought this up with me this
- 4:51Speaker 2: morning when I talked to him at 7 o'clock. We're
- 4:53Speaker 2: going to talk about it on the show today. They
- 4:55Speaker 2: are not getting a return so far on their $ 17
- 4:58Speaker 2: million a year investment in Rashid Shaheed at all. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: he needs to be part of the offense. He needs
- 5:05Speaker 2: a running game to help him open down the field
- 5:07Speaker 2: in the play-action pass game. And his punt return game
- 5:11Speaker 2: has not been there either. And that's part of a
- 5:13Speaker 2: bigger problem on special teams that Mike McDonald talked about
- 5:16Speaker 2: coming out of Washington. You'll hear Mike McDonald talk about that.
- 5:21Speaker 2: This has not been a special teams season start for
- 5:24Speaker 2: the Seahawks who had by all measures and metrics, the
- 5:27Speaker 2: best special teams units across the board. Last year, Washington
- 5:31Speaker 2: had many drive starts, not just after the turnovers, but
- 5:35Speaker 2: many drive starts, favorable drive starts because of kickoff returns,
- 5:39Speaker 2: because of punt coverage issues. And the Seahawks are not
- 5:42Speaker 2: generating anything in the return game to get better drive
- 5:44Speaker 2: starts either. And Rashid Jaheed, of course, largely signed back
- 5:48Speaker 2: to be the catalyst of that, hasn't happened. And Mike
- 5:53Speaker 2: McDonald said Monday, everyone is eligible to be on specialty starters, veterans,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and they're going to look for fixes. And if he
- 6:00Speaker 2: has to pull starters off his defense and his offense,
- 6:03Speaker 2: he may do that.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I think he said something like along the lines of
- 6:06Speaker 4: everyone's eligible.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Everyone's eligible is what he said. And we've seen that
- 6:10Speaker 2: in the past. Pete Carroll used to have Richard Sherman
- 6:13Speaker 2: and Doug Baldwin, even after they made their marks as
- 6:16Speaker 2: Seahawks starters and stars on special teams, Tyler Lockett used
- 6:19Speaker 2: to return kicks. Of course he started as a all
- 6:21Speaker 2: pro kick returner as a rookie, but yeah, That could
- 6:25Speaker 2: be an option for Mike McDonald to look at different
- 6:28Speaker 2: starters to put in on the special teams. But we'll
- 6:30Speaker 2: talk about those issues, including running back, including Jadarian Price,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and why I think he's going to be a very
- 6:36Speaker 2: big focal point of the offense on Sunday when the
- 6:40Speaker 2: Seahawks play the Chargers. Speaking of the Chargers, 11 o'clock,
- 6:43Speaker 2: we're going to go live to Los Angeles. We're going
- 6:44Speaker 2: to talk to Matt Money-Smith. What do they call him?
- 6:47Speaker 2: Money Smith?
- 6:48Speaker 4: I don't know, but I called him last week to
- 6:51Speaker 4: see if he could join us today.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yes, exactly. And he said, no, Matt's fine. And I'm like,
- 6:57Speaker 3: I kind of like money, man.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So maybe you can ask him about that because it
- 7:01Speaker 4: is listed for those outside of our industry that we
- 7:04Speaker 4: get this black book.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's called the NFL Black Book.
- 7:06Speaker 4: It gives all the media contacts, all the radio contacts,
- 7:10Speaker 4: television contacts, and just lets you know who is in
- 7:13Speaker 4: the market.
- 7:13Speaker 3: They also.
- 7:14Speaker 4: do a great job, the NFL as a whole, of
- 7:17Speaker 4: giving restaurant recommendations. There's a ton in this black book.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So I always utilize that. And I said, Matt Money Smith. Okay,
- 7:25Speaker 4: that could be fun. But he does play-by-play for the Chargers,
- 7:29Speaker 4: and he'll be a great resource for us.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Let's talk about Justin Herbert. And we're also talking about
- 7:34Speaker 2: something that Jory Epstein brought up with us yesterday in
- 7:36Speaker 2: our weekly talk with her when she said that she's
- 7:38Speaker 2: talked to teams around the league that think the Mike
- 7:40Speaker 2: McDaniel-Jim Harbaugh fix is Or meshing is not working. They're
- 7:45Speaker 2: just not meshing. And it's not working in L.A., especially
- 7:49Speaker 2: with the offense. Justin Herbert, we've mentioned his problems. We're
- 7:52Speaker 2: going to talk to Money Smith. Maybe I'll ask him
- 7:55Speaker 2: why he calls himself Money.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Or just like, not why he calls himself. Where did
- 7:59Speaker 4: that moniker come from? Let's not put it on him.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I don't think you give yourself a nickname.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Other people do.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Those play-by-play announcers don't have money as their nickname. I
- 8:09Speaker 2: forgot to ask you.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah, just where did that come from?
- 8:12Speaker 4: I really don't think he gave himself that moniker.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I don't know. Jessamyn, she'll have more tact. Maybe I'll
- 8:20Speaker 2: leave her to ask him that. 11.30, we'll read back
- 8:22Speaker 2: your text. Have talkbacks if you have them on the
- 8:25Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. or 933KJR. com, or the Tacoma Dodge text line,
- 8:30Speaker 2: of course, 49451-1135. Another chance to win $ 1, 000 from the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel in our Factor Fiction Contest
- 8:37Speaker 2: that runs all the way through December the 11th. Your
- 8:40Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 comes up at 1135. Matching wits
- 8:45Speaker 2: against our picks for college. It's going college, back to
- 8:47Speaker 2: college today. Dan Furness will join me. That's where I
- 8:51Speaker 2: go usually.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Yes.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Especially after I think I did one pro game and
- 8:55Speaker 2: the Steelers got beat 20 to three by the Patriots.
- 8:57Speaker 2: And I was like, okay, that's done.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Going back to your roots.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm going to go back to my roots for this
- 9:02Speaker 2: college pick, by the way, too. And then Ian Furness
- 9:05Speaker 2: will join me 1145 heading into his show 12 until three.
- 9:08Speaker 2: He's going to join me right out here from Seahawks headquarters.
- 9:11Speaker 2: We're here because this is the first prep day of
- 9:15Speaker 2: the NFL game week. They are mandated by the collective
- 9:18Speaker 2: bargaining agreement to have a Tuesday off when it's Sunday
- 9:21Speaker 2: to Sunday games. So they did yesterday, and now they're
- 9:24Speaker 2: back on the field today, which is why this today
- 9:26Speaker 2: will be the first indication on whether Julian Love practices.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And if he does practice, that would be a real
- 9:31Speaker 2: good sign that he's going to play. That's a big
- 9:34Speaker 2: deal because the Seahawks had to start two safeties, two
- 9:37Speaker 2: deep safeties that were up from the beginning of the
- 9:39Speaker 2: season on the practice squad. Rodney Thomas, of course, had
- 9:43Speaker 2: started the first two games because Ty Okada was injured.
- 9:46Speaker 2: There are no signs Ty Okada is coming back this week.
- 9:49Speaker 2: This would be the fourth game he's missed, which make
- 9:51Speaker 2: in retrospect, maybe they should have put him on injured
- 9:54Speaker 2: reserve designated to return and use his roster spot for
- 9:57Speaker 2: someone else. Hamstrings don't just heal overnight. Those take a while.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And it looked like at the end of the training camp,
- 10:06Speaker 2: right in late August, start of September is when this
- 10:09Speaker 2: issue first flared up because he was full go throughout
- 10:11Speaker 2: the preseason and training camp practices. So with Okada out,
- 10:15Speaker 2: Rodney Thomas was up. And then when Julian Love got hurt, A.J.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Finley started, and those were your two deep safeties in Washington.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Julian loves a traffic cop back there, and he has
- 10:27Speaker 2: everybody in the right place. He has great instincts. He
- 10:29Speaker 2: had interceptions in each of the first two games. He's
- 10:32Speaker 2: played every position in the secondary in the NFL, first
- 10:36Speaker 2: for the New York Giants when he was a captain
- 10:37Speaker 2: for them. He was an outside corner. He was an
- 10:39Speaker 2: inside slot corner and nickel. He was a deep safety.
- 10:41Speaker 2: He was a strong safety. He's done it all in
- 10:44Speaker 2: the league, and we saw a So the story of
- 10:50Speaker 2: today in practice will be is Julian Love practicing? And
- 10:53Speaker 2: if he does today, even on a limited basis, that
- 10:55Speaker 2: would be a step toward him. Playing against the Chargers
- 10:58Speaker 2: on Sunday. This is the first full practice day of
- 11:02Speaker 2: the week. Then they practice again tomorrow. Then they practice
- 11:04Speaker 2: again Friday. Saturday is the walkthrough and Sunday is the game.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So there's a cadence now that they settle into that
- 11:09Speaker 2: we get to Sunday games. And, of course, the Sharks
- 11:12Speaker 2: have two home games here, the Chargers and the 49ers back-to-back. But, yeah, Jessamyn,
- 11:17Speaker 2: we saw– Julian loves value by him not being on
- 11:20Speaker 2: the field in Washington, I think. Yeah, I know.
- 11:22Speaker 4: That was, you know, subtraction by subtraction. People like to
- 11:27Speaker 4: use the phrase addition by subtraction. That was subtraction by
- 11:30Speaker 4: him not being there. And I'm really looking forward to
- 11:33Speaker 4: seeing if he's out there or not because not only
- 11:36Speaker 4: does he have all the instincts and all the versatility,
- 11:39Speaker 4: but he is a leader, leader on this team.
- 11:42Speaker 2: He is, for sure, in the locker room and on
- 11:45Speaker 2: the field as well. And then the other thing I'm
- 11:47Speaker 2: going to really be watching for all week, and I
- 11:49Speaker 2: won't be able to see it at practice because they
- 11:51Speaker 2: won't let us out there, but for the first 10
- 11:52Speaker 2: minutes of them stretching, that's all we get. And that's
- 11:55Speaker 2: true around the league. It's not just to the Seahawks.
- 11:58Speaker 2: But Nick Emanwuri and his use. We're going to talk
- 12:00Speaker 2: about this during the show. But in Washington, I had
- 12:03Speaker 2: my binoculars on. We had a really odd angle in Washington.
- 12:06Speaker 2: The press box is in the corner end zone. Great
- 12:09Speaker 2: when they're on your end of the field, but really
- 12:12Speaker 2: poor for the rest of the game. But I had
- 12:14Speaker 2: my binoculars on Emanwuri. When he was in the game,
- 12:17Speaker 2: he was almost exclusively at the edge of the defense
- 12:20Speaker 2: on the line of scrimmage. And he mostly dropped into coverage,
- 12:24Speaker 2: often against slot receivers. And that, of course, is not
- 12:27Speaker 2: how Mike McDonald used him last year. He used him
- 12:30Speaker 2: as a chess piece to move all over the board,
- 12:33Speaker 2: brushing the quarterback, stacking against the run, taking wide receivers,
- 12:37Speaker 2: taking backs out of the backfield, all kinds of roles.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And he wasn't doing that in Washington. And so the
- 12:43Speaker 2: harnessing was still on since that July arthroscopic ankle surgery.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And I really want to see the harness come off
- 12:50Speaker 2: and how this defense looks with him playing like he
- 12:52Speaker 2: did last year. And Mike McDonald on Monday hinted that's coming.
- 12:55Speaker 2: He said the coaches have to do a better job
- 12:58Speaker 2: of playing Imanwari in different positions around the defense. And that,
- 13:02Speaker 2: to me, means all three levels like last year. That
- 13:04Speaker 2: means on the line of scrimmage. That means off-ball line,
- 13:06Speaker 2: Sam linebacker. a strong sideline backer off the ball, sometimes
- 13:10Speaker 2: in coverage, sometimes rushing, blitzing, and also means in coverage
- 13:14Speaker 2: deeper as a state safety, strong and free, as they
- 13:17Speaker 2: go a lot more dime. So there were many times
- 13:20Speaker 2: in Washington that it was third and short, third and medium,
- 13:22Speaker 2: and third and long that Eamon Worry wasn't even on
- 13:24Speaker 2: the field.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Well, they were easing him back in, yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Of course. They went from nine snaps in Arizona his
- 13:30Speaker 2: season debut to 52% of the time, I think it
- 13:32Speaker 2: was 28 of 62 or whatever it ended up being,
- 13:34Speaker 2: 29 of 68 or something like that. But 52% of
- 13:38Speaker 2: the snaps, and that's so far below what he was
- 13:41Speaker 2: for them last year. He told me after the Arizona
- 13:44Speaker 2: game he wanted 100% of the reps. He said, I'm
- 13:46Speaker 2: not coming out the rest of the season.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Of course he wants that.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Of course. Of course. Every player wants that. But it's
- 13:52Speaker 2: obvious that Mike McDonald did not do that in only
- 13:56Speaker 2: half the snaps in Washington. So how much more does
- 13:58Speaker 2: Eamon Worre play? But more to the point, how many
- 14:01Speaker 2: more roles does he play? Julian Love coming back would
- 14:04Speaker 2: help that. And being able to free up Eamon Worre.
- 14:07Speaker 2: to play up in all the different spots that he
- 14:09Speaker 2: was last year. So that's on defense. The other thing
- 14:12Speaker 2: I'm looking at this week from the Seahawks and changing,
- 14:15Speaker 2: their defense will change when Eamon Worre's use change, for sure.
- 14:19Speaker 2: We saw that last year. So all things considered, you
- 14:22Speaker 2: see some reason why they lost in 33 points and
- 14:26Speaker 2: the three turnovers the offense gave them. The average drive starts,
- 14:29Speaker 2: by the way, the three times the Seahawks turned the
- 14:32Speaker 2: ball over in Washington, the average drive starts for the
- 14:34Speaker 2: commanders off those turnovers, the Seahawks' 32-yard line. All three
- 14:38Speaker 2: of the turnovers became touchdowns. That's 21 gifted points, and
- 14:42Speaker 2: you lose by two. Very reminiscent to the last three
- 14:46Speaker 2: losses the Seahawks had before that. You go back to
- 14:49Speaker 2: week one of the 2025 season. Remember the 49ers game
- 14:53Speaker 2: and the 49ers? Seahawks are marching inside the 10-yard line
- 14:56Speaker 2: with 30 seconds left. And Nick Bosa pushed right tackle
- 15:00Speaker 2: Abe Lucas into Sam Donald, who dropped the ball, lost
- 15:02Speaker 2: it with 30 seconds left. 49ers recover. Seahawks lose the
- 15:05Speaker 2: game by four points. Tampa Bay, early October of last year.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Shootout game because of turnovers. Then late in the game,
- 15:14Speaker 2: Darnold throws an interception off of a helmet of a
- 15:17Speaker 2: Buccaneers lineman, much like the interception he had in the
- 15:19Speaker 2: Commanders game on Sunday. And the Buccaneers are gifted plus
- 15:23Speaker 2: field position for an easy field goal game over. They
- 15:26Speaker 2: lose by two, I think it was, or three. And
- 15:30Speaker 2: then the Los Angeles Rams game in November in Englewood.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Darnold throws four interceptions. The Rams have drive starts inside
- 15:37Speaker 2: the 10 and inside the 5-yard line. They scored 21
- 15:41Speaker 2: points off those turnovers. Career-high interception day for Darnold, and
- 15:44Speaker 2: they lose by only two. Three-turnover game, two interceptions by
- 15:49Speaker 2: Darnold and Washington, and they lose by only two. Point being,
- 15:52Speaker 2: the last four losses the Seahawks have had have all
- 15:53Speaker 2: been because of turnovers. And if the offense doesn't give
- 15:57Speaker 2: the opponent a short field to score on this defense,
- 16:00Speaker 2: Mike McDonald has reason and believes and has reason to
- 16:02Speaker 2: still believe No team is going to drive multiple times
- 16:06Speaker 2: down the field for multiple touchdowns on them. But when
- 16:09Speaker 2: the offense turns the ball over, short fields, points, and
- 16:12Speaker 2: cheap points off the defense. And that's how they've lost
- 16:15Speaker 2: the last four times in the last two years.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Yeah, the protect the ball kind of went out the
- 16:18Speaker 4: window in that game. And they still had a shot.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Right. They still lost by a day. They were one
- 16:24Speaker 2: defensive stop at the end of the way from getting
- 16:26Speaker 2: the ball back in position to win the game. Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I know a lot of people talk about turnover margin,
- 16:32Speaker 2: and Hugh Millen had a talk about turnover margin and
- 16:35Speaker 2: the correlation of it, and there is more to it
- 16:37Speaker 2: than that. But with this defense, the way the Seahawks play,
- 16:42Speaker 2: there aren't going to be many offenses that are going
- 16:44Speaker 2: to drive the field 75, 80 yards after a touchback
- 16:47Speaker 2: or a kickoff return to score touchdowns multiple times a
- 16:51Speaker 2: game against this defense. So therein lies the key. Don't
- 16:55Speaker 2: turn the ball over and give the offense, the other team,
- 16:58Speaker 2: a short field to score points. But 49451, Tacoma Dodge
- 17:03Speaker 2: text line, the first question I asked was, what do
- 17:06Speaker 2: you love about October and is it the best sports
- 17:08Speaker 2: month of the year? But two, we're going to talk
- 17:10Speaker 2: a lot about the Mariners' next manager. Who do you
- 17:12Speaker 2: want it to be? Who do you want the manager
- 17:14Speaker 2: for the Mariners to be next post Dan Wilson? Tori
- 17:18Speaker 2: Lavella is getting names thrown out there a lot. Some
- 17:21Speaker 2: people on the text line saying Jay Buhner yesterday. I
- 17:23Speaker 2: don't think that's happening.
- 17:25Speaker 4: No, I don't think he would want to go through
- 17:26Speaker 4: the same process that Dan Wilson went through because he
- 17:30Speaker 4: coached in the Futures game during All-Star in 2023, and
- 17:34Speaker 4: I think he does some coaching with his family. But
- 17:38Speaker 4: that is not, I think, what they're going for because
- 17:41Speaker 4: Jerry DePoto also said in his press conference that it's
- 17:47Speaker 4: not a prerequisite, but it is preferred if someone has
- 17:50Speaker 4: actual managerial experience.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yes, and from the outside the organization. Yep. With a
- 17:55Speaker 2: new look and a new culture. And as he, as
- 17:58Speaker 2: Gepodo put it, maybe to see our blind spots that
- 18:00Speaker 2: we're not seeing in the process and the playing and
- 18:03Speaker 2: the culture of the team. So it would appear it's
- 18:05Speaker 2: going to be from outside. It would appear it will
- 18:07Speaker 2: not be a Dan Wilson redo of a Seahawks legend
- 18:09Speaker 2: like a Jay Buhner, although he would be more of
- 18:12Speaker 2: a kick in the ass guy, you would think then.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I mean, bench coach, let's go.
- 18:17Speaker 4: He'll get himself ejected before a manager does.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Who do you want the Mariners to hire as the
- 18:24Speaker 2: next manager? Tacoma Dodge text line 49451NY, and we'll read
- 18:28Speaker 2: those back at 1130. 1135 Factor Fiction brought to you
- 18:32Speaker 2: by the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Your chance to
- 18:36Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000. But up next, we're going to talk about
- 18:38Speaker 2: the Seahawks. They say they're fine. They're not throwing stuff around.
- 18:42Speaker 2: They're not chicken littles out here at Renton. But they've
- 18:45Speaker 2: got issues. They're addressing those issues. We'll tell you what
- 18:48Speaker 2: they are next on 93.3 KJRFM. We've apparently entered the
- 19:05Speaker 2: Cinco de Mayo portion of the show. Greg Bell, Justin
- 19:08Speaker 2: McIntyre with you at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Wasn't necessarily the one that I meant to play.
- 19:15Speaker 2: It works. Whatever.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I liked it.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I like the other one better. Yeah.
- 19:23Speaker 3: We are in football season.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we are. So the Seahawks are heading into their
- 19:27Speaker 2: fourth game of the season against the Los Angeles Chargers
- 19:30Speaker 2: on Saturday.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Okay.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Losers for only the fourth time since the beginning of
- 19:35Speaker 2: last season, and the first time in 10 months. Their
- 19:37Speaker 2: franchise record 12-game winning streak is over. They had been
- 19:42Speaker 2: 16-2 on the road, the best in the NFL since 2024,
- 19:45Speaker 2: before they turned the ball over three times at Washington,
- 19:48Speaker 2: lost to the Commanders. 33 31 this past weekend demarcus
- 19:53Speaker 2: lawrence in the locker room the 13 year veteran outside
- 19:55Speaker 2: linebacker told me in washington we're the dark side defense
- 19:59Speaker 2: trust me we aren't going nowhere they played a good
- 20:02Speaker 2: game you know but at the end of the day
- 20:04Speaker 2: it's all about us they played a great game we
- 20:07Speaker 2: played a bad game But that's not to say the
- 20:10Speaker 2: Seahawks don't have issues to fix, and that's what Mike
- 20:13Speaker 2: McDonald and his coaching staff are focusing on right now
- 20:17Speaker 2: in the morning meeting, and they're in a walk-through practice
- 20:20Speaker 2: right now, and then Mike McDonald's going to talk to
- 20:22Speaker 2: the media at 12. There'll be an open locker room,
- 20:25Speaker 2: press conferences with players, usually Cooper Cup comes in, Leonard
- 20:29Speaker 2: Williams comes in on Wednesday, and then they go out
- 20:32Speaker 2: to practice. Injury report, the first one of the week,
- 20:35Speaker 2: issued at about 4 o'clock, 3.30 today, and we'll be
- 20:37Speaker 2: looking to see if Julian Love is there. practicing today
- 20:40Speaker 2: after missing the commanders game, but loves injury is just
- 20:44Speaker 2: one issue. The most glaring one on offense, of course,
- 20:47Speaker 2: is the running back. Did Ari and price their rookie
- 20:49Speaker 2: number one pick in the lead running back to replace
- 20:52Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker has fumbled in each of his last two games.
- 20:56Speaker 2: He got benched during the commanders game from much of
- 20:58Speaker 2: the game, set most of the first half in a
- 21:01Speaker 2: raincoat on the sidelines, watching Emmanuel Wilson run. And we
- 21:04Speaker 2: saw Wilson does not have the game breaking speed, the moves,
- 21:08Speaker 2: the cuts, the He's the short yardage back who got
- 21:11Speaker 2: 91 yards in Arizona, but maybe Arizona's bad. And he
- 21:15Speaker 2: was not fast. The difference between Price and Wilson was
- 21:20Speaker 2: like a Porsche and AMC Eagle back in the 70s.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It was not even close.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I don't know what that is.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I know. There are only a few listeners probably about
- 21:30Speaker 2: the age of 50 who know what I'm talking about.
- 21:32Speaker 2: But yeah, Pinto or Yugo or you name a car
- 21:36Speaker 2: that doesn't go fast and that's what Emmanuel Wilson looked
- 21:39Speaker 2: like a dump truck.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Was it like the Chevy Nova?
- 21:42Speaker 4: Kind of like a joke because Nova means no-go in Spanish.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. Chevy Chevette. You name it back in the day.
- 21:51Speaker 2: That's what Emmanuel Wilson compared to Jaron Price. Price is
- 21:53Speaker 2: the Porsche and the Lamborghini, but he's dropping the ball.
- 21:57Speaker 2: And so they sent him, like I mentioned, they were
- 22:00Speaker 2: willing to sacrifice the offense for a game to have
- 22:03Speaker 2: a long-term message to the rookie to hold on to
- 22:06Speaker 2: the ball so he can get back on the field.
- 22:09Speaker 2: This is what Mike McDonald said about Price and his
- 22:12Speaker 2: fumbling and where they go from here.
- 22:14Speaker 6: With your offensive running game yesterday, how much of it,
- 22:16Speaker 6: I guess, do you look at was Washington's a really
- 22:18Speaker 6: good defense versus things you guys could have done better?
- 22:21Speaker 6: And then just with Zidarian as well, when you looked
- 22:24Speaker 6: at his fumble, just kind of what you saw there
- 22:26Speaker 6: and what's the teaching point there?
- 22:29Speaker 2: It's both.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Credit to Washington. Did a great job. And also, we
- 22:34Speaker 7: feel like there's plenty of room to grow. So, I
- 22:38Speaker 7: think it's a function of in real-time execution and also
- 22:45Speaker 7: finding solutions as the game goes, also the way the
- 22:47Speaker 7: game was going of some things we wanted to be
- 22:50Speaker 7: able to do offensively in the pass game and in
- 22:52Speaker 7: the screen game. So I think it's a process thing.
- 22:56Speaker 7: I think we stick to our process. And really with
- 23:00Speaker 7: our whole team right now, the message after the game
- 23:02Speaker 7: was I think we'd feel the same way after the game.
- 23:04Speaker 7: whether or not we closed it out and found a
- 23:06Speaker 7: way to win or the way it shook out. So,
- 23:09Speaker 7: you know, really kind of in every tentacle from coming
- 23:14Speaker 7: out of the game of where can we grow, how
- 23:16Speaker 7: can we make our process better, that's been the mentality
- 23:19Speaker 7: every day, or today at least. And so with J.D.,
- 23:23Speaker 7: I mean, he understands what's going on. He needs to
- 23:26Speaker 7: take care of the ball. I think there's some things
- 23:27Speaker 7: fundamentally where we can focus on and we're going to
- 23:31Speaker 7: continue to give him the ball. We trust him. And
- 23:34Speaker 7: we know that he's going to work really hard to
- 23:35Speaker 7: do his part as well.
- 23:38Speaker 2: We're going to continue to give him the ball. We
- 23:40Speaker 2: trust him. And Mike McDonald is probably a man of
- 23:42Speaker 2: his word there, publicly backing his running back. And to
- 23:45Speaker 2: show that, he's going to probably give the ball to him, Price,
- 23:48Speaker 2: quite a bit early in the game against the Chargers.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Wouldn't you think, Jessamyn?
- 23:52Speaker 3: I would absolutely think so.
- 23:54Speaker 4: And I think just publicly giving him that back because,
- 23:57Speaker 4: I mean, for instance, our kicker at Washington State has
- 24:02Speaker 4: had a case of the yips in the beginning of
- 24:04Speaker 4: the year. And then he actually performed this past weekend.
- 24:09Speaker 4: And I think just trotting him back out there and
- 24:11Speaker 4: not going for it on fourth and showing that kind
- 24:14Speaker 4: of confidence that you have of him of getting right.
- 24:16Speaker 4: And just after that first one that he made, you
- 24:19Speaker 4: could see that he was right. And I think the
- 24:20Speaker 4: same goes for Jadarian Price, because you're.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Still showing the confidence.
- 24:27Speaker 4: And I think that everything in his brain is going
- 24:30Speaker 4: to be protect the ball, protect the ball, protect the ball.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, he said that after the game in Washington. He
- 24:35Speaker 2: told me, I got to change my mindset. Instead of
- 24:38Speaker 2: fighting for extra yards and try to get every yard
- 24:40Speaker 2: I can, every blade of grass, that cliche we hear
- 24:42Speaker 2: all the time around here, he needs to first think
- 24:45Speaker 2: about protecting the ball. And if it means fewer yards,
- 24:48Speaker 2: so be it. That's what he's going to have to
- 24:49Speaker 2: do to stay on the field. And he knows that.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I was just going to say, I'm sure he's had
- 24:55Speaker 4: really good conversations with Sam Darnold, who was not happy
- 24:58Speaker 4: with his Super Bowl performance, even though he won the game.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Even though the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, he wasn't
- 25:05Speaker 4: happy with that, but he knew that his main goal
- 25:07Speaker 4: was to protect the ball.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I asked Darnold after the Washington game if he talked
- 25:11Speaker 2: to the rookie, and we'll talk to the rookie, or
- 25:13Speaker 2: he just leaves him alone. He said, no, I'll encourage him.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I will talk to him. He's not going to just
- 25:18Speaker 2: leave him alone. Remember, these are the first two, not
- 25:20Speaker 2: an excuse, but a fact. These are the first three
- 25:24Speaker 2: pro games of Jadarian Price's career. He's never played before
- 25:27Speaker 2: because he didn't play any of the preseason games. He
- 25:29Speaker 2: hadn't played since last November. So it's preseason for him,
- 25:33Speaker 2: although the games count now. So I wonder next time
- 25:37Speaker 2: if the Seahawks could do it over, they might give
- 25:39Speaker 2: the rookie running back they're going to rely on a
- 25:41Speaker 2: few carries in the preseason instead of making his first
- 25:43Speaker 2: carries when the games actually count. 49451 on the Tacoma
- 25:47Speaker 2: Dodge text line. How do you feel, Mike McDonald? Brian Fleury,
- 25:51Speaker 2: Thomas Hammock, the running back coach, handled that Jadarian Price
- 25:55Speaker 2: fumbling in Washington and the benching. And whether you thought
- 25:59Speaker 2: that was justified and the right message and subverting the
- 26:02Speaker 2: offense for a day, really losing a game over it,
- 26:05Speaker 2: running the ball only 18 times in total while throwing
- 26:08Speaker 2: it 45 times while Price was on the bench for
- 26:11Speaker 2: most of the, really the last three and a half quarters.
- 26:14Speaker 2: He only ran the ball twice, Jessamyn, after the 11-minute
- 26:17Speaker 2: mark of the first quarter when he fumbled.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 26:20Speaker 2: It's the rest of the game. Five carries, 15 yards total,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and that was a message sent. It cost them the
- 26:26Speaker 2: game on offense. Turning the ball over did two. Two
- 26:29Speaker 2: more Sam Darnold interceptions, one off a defensive lineman's helmet,
- 26:32Speaker 2: one a just horrid forced play into a crowded middle
- 26:36Speaker 2: of the field trying to get to A.J. Barner, that
- 26:38Speaker 2: backup linebacker for Washington, intercepted in return for the clinching touchdown.
- 26:42Speaker 2: That didn't help either. But the offense, not scoring on
- 26:44Speaker 2: the goal line, three consecutive passing completions on second and
- 26:49Speaker 2: goal from the two. That stemmed from the offense not
- 26:51Speaker 2: being able to run the ball. And Chuck was asking
- 26:54Speaker 2: me a lot about what I saw in those third
- 26:55Speaker 2: and fourth down pass plays on those failed fourth downs.
- 26:58Speaker 2: And I said I saw a lot of covered Seahawks
- 27:00Speaker 2: because the commanders were dropping into coverage, not crowding the
- 27:03Speaker 2: line of scrimmage with any threat that the Seahawks were
- 27:06Speaker 2: going to run the ball. And if you don't have
- 27:07Speaker 2: a threat to run near the goal line, you're going
- 27:09Speaker 2: to get 6, 7, 8 in coverage over a 10-yard
- 27:12Speaker 2: end zone box. That's a hard thing for a receiver
- 27:15Speaker 2: to get open. And you saw Donald in that fourth down.
- 27:18Speaker 2: running to his left, to his right, couldn't find anybody open,
- 27:22Speaker 2: finally throwing late and incomplete to A.J. Barner. So they've
- 27:25Speaker 2: got to run. And to run, they've got to have
- 27:27Speaker 2: Jadarian Price on the field. It's why they drafted him.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It's why he replaced Kenneth Walker. It's why they chose
- 27:33Speaker 2: to let Walker walk for the big money to Kansas City. Okay,
- 27:36Speaker 2: now Jadarian Price in the second, or excuse me, Julian
- 27:39Speaker 2: Love in the secondary. Is he going to play? Well,
- 27:41Speaker 2: Mike McDonald had this to say about Love's status for
- 27:44Speaker 2: this week.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Hey, Mike.
- 27:46Speaker 2: I just wanted to ask, when you rewatched the tape,
- 27:48Speaker 2: what did you see from your two safeties in this game,
- 27:50Speaker 2: and do you anticipate that either Julian Love or Ty Okada.
- 27:53Speaker 8: Will be able to practice this week?
- 27:54Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 27:55Speaker 7: Guys played good football. They communicated. There's some opportunities out
- 28:00Speaker 7: there that I think both would say that we'd like
- 28:03Speaker 7: to be able to take advantage of next time. As
- 28:06Speaker 7: far as Julian goes, it's a day-to-day thing right now.
- 28:11Speaker 5: So.
- 28:12Speaker 7: We'll see how that shakes out. I know he did
- 28:15Speaker 7: some extensive work this morning and it went well, so
- 28:17Speaker 7: we'll see how that translates to Wednesday and moving forward.
- 28:23Speaker 2: We'll see today if Julian Love practices. If he does,
- 28:26Speaker 2: even in a limited fashion, that means that calf injury
- 28:29Speaker 2: is improving and there's a chance he will play against
- 28:31Speaker 2: the Chargers on Sunday at Lumen Field. First, let's go
- 28:35Speaker 2: to Nicky Morris. Stay in the secondary. Nicky Manwari, I
- 28:38Speaker 2: mentioned at the top of the show, they did not
- 28:40Speaker 2: use him in Washington like they did last year. He
- 28:41Speaker 2: was mainly on the edge of the line of scrimmage,
- 28:44Speaker 2: in the slot, and often dropping into coverage. He rarely
- 28:47Speaker 2: ran into the backfield blitzing or rushing unless they were
- 28:51Speaker 2: running away from him and leaving him unblocked off the
- 28:53Speaker 2: opposite edge. That was about the only time I saw
- 28:55Speaker 2: him rushing into the backfield. I mean, they were blitzing
- 28:59Speaker 2: Drake Thomas more than they were Nicky Manwari. Mike McDonald
- 29:03Speaker 2: was in Washington. Only 52% of the snaps... This is
- 29:07Speaker 2: what Mike McDonald said to expect going forward with Nicky Manwari.
- 29:10Speaker 7: I thought Nick had a good game. There's some really
- 29:13Speaker 7: great plays. It'll continue to get better. I think he
- 29:18Speaker 7: should be really proud of how he's approached last week mentally.
- 29:22Speaker 7: I think that's one of the things to answer Brian's question.
- 29:24Speaker 7: It's something that we want to discuss as a staff.
- 29:26Speaker 7: It's just what the process is every week of how, where,
- 29:30Speaker 7: and how often he plays. We can have a really focused.
- 29:35Speaker 7: Game plan because where he plays really affects the position
- 29:38Speaker 7: group around him because he's playing out of really three
- 29:40Speaker 7: position groups. So that's something we'll continue to think about
- 29:46Speaker 7: and make better. But he's done a great job.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Where and how often he plays, that's something we're going
- 29:51Speaker 2: to continue to think about and make better. I'd expect
- 29:54Speaker 2: more of a full Nick Emanuari 2025 experience for the
- 29:58Speaker 2: Seahawks defense. on Sunday against the Chargers. That can only
- 30:02Speaker 2: make the defense better and confuse the offense more aware
- 30:05Speaker 2: of where the heck number three is lining up and
- 30:06Speaker 2: coming from. It would sure help if Julian Love was
- 30:09Speaker 2: playing to help backfill and keep stable in the back.
- 30:14Speaker 2: They let Eamon Worry run around the field and do
- 30:16Speaker 2: all kinds of things in the defense. That would be
- 30:19Speaker 2: the perfect situation for Seattle on defense this week to
- 30:21Speaker 2: get back Love and have Eamon Worry in his 2025 role.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Let's talk about Rasheed Shahid for a minute. He's been
- 30:28Speaker 2: hesitant on kickoff and punt returns, especially punt returns, but he,
- 30:32Speaker 2: in Washington, didn't have many people blocking for him. I mean,
- 30:35Speaker 2: there were two or three commanders waiting for him as
- 30:38Speaker 2: the ball was arriving, which is why a couple times
- 30:40Speaker 2: he either fair-caught it or let it bounce. I don't
- 30:42Speaker 2: think I'd be taking the ball with three unblocked guys
- 30:45Speaker 2: charging the 40, 50-yard head start at me either. So
- 30:48Speaker 2: easy for us to say, why is he not returning it? Well,
- 30:51Speaker 2: he needs to have people blocking for him. The punt
- 30:53Speaker 2: return blocking, the kickoff return blocking... The punt coverage and
- 30:57Speaker 2: the kickoff coverage have all been subpar. The Commanders had
- 31:01Speaker 2: way too many kick and punt returns for field position
- 31:05Speaker 2: switches that the Seahawks rely on to be in their
- 31:08Speaker 2: favor and were last year. Last year, they had the
- 31:10Speaker 2: best special teams in the league by most metrics, all metrics, really.
- 31:14Speaker 2: And this year, it's not been the case. And so far,
- 31:17Speaker 2: Mike McDonald has not been happy with his special teams.
- 31:20Speaker 2: This is what he had to say about that.
- 31:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, to put it plainly, it's... It's not
- 31:27Speaker 7: good enough. There's things process-wise we can improve on, and
- 31:34Speaker 7: we've talked about this throughout training camp and really since
- 31:36Speaker 7: we got here, but a Seahawk play needs to look
- 31:37Speaker 7: like a Seahawk play. There's plays on tape that we're
- 31:42Speaker 7: not doing that. The standard is higher on special teams here.
- 31:47Speaker 7: We've proven that. The guys will get it right, but
- 31:50Speaker 7: there's definitely a sense of urgency to make it look
- 31:52Speaker 7: like us and to play our style of ball on teams.
- 31:55Speaker 8: Is Irv Charles potentially going to fit into that here
- 31:57Speaker 8: down the line?
- 31:58Speaker 7: I know that he's eligible to return here after.
- 32:00Speaker 2: The next game.
- 32:01Speaker 7: Everybody is eligible to play on our special teams units.
- 32:06Speaker 7: No one is exempt from special teams consideration.
- 32:11Speaker 2: That was Corbin Smith of Emerald Spectrum asking about Irvin
- 32:13Speaker 2: Charles who's on the injured reserve list, a veteran in
- 32:15Speaker 2: the NFL who has played special teams for years. And
- 32:19Speaker 2: Mike McDonald using that as a way to say, I
- 32:22Speaker 2: might put starters in so many words.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Nobody's exempt is a pretty strong statement.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Exactly. They need to get Shahid going. They're not getting
- 32:31Speaker 2: the return on the $ 17 million per year. He's got
- 32:33Speaker 2: 12 pass targets through three games, three in the opener,
- 32:36Speaker 2: six in Arizona, three on Sunday in Washington. Smith and Jake,
- 32:40Speaker 2: of course, had 14 targets by himself at Washington. A
- 32:44Speaker 2: running game sure would help Shahid. He'd get the play-action
- 32:46Speaker 2: pass and draw on the defense, the middle of defenses
- 32:49Speaker 2: to the line of scrimmage, and that would get Shahid
- 32:51Speaker 2: a chance to get by them for the deep throws.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Chuck Powell asked me this morning about fans and people
- 32:57Speaker 2: have been talking about keeping Shahid over bringing back Kenneth Walker.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Not related. They had both cash and cap space. to
- 33:05Speaker 2: re-sign both of those guys. And they made a value
- 33:07Speaker 2: judgment on Walker and his position and decided they didn't
- 33:10Speaker 2: want to spend $ 15 million plus a year at running back.
- 33:14Speaker 2: And they did at kick return, punt return, and wide receiver.
- 33:19Speaker 2: They could have afforded both. And they chose instead to
- 33:22Speaker 2: draft Price, have him at a rookie salary for four
- 33:25Speaker 2: years with a fifth-year option by making him the number
- 33:27Speaker 2: one pick. But I wouldn't say, well, because they brought
- 33:30Speaker 2: Shahid back, they let Walker go. They could have had
- 33:33Speaker 2: them both. They just chose at the running back position
- 33:35Speaker 2: and not spend that much money. So it's easy to
- 33:39Speaker 2: say now, does struggling start for Price and for Shahid,
- 33:45Speaker 2: but that's not how it went down. Up next, let's
- 33:48Speaker 2: go back to the Mariners and who they might be
- 33:50Speaker 2: enamored with as their next manager. Torrey Lovello is getting
- 33:53Speaker 2: a lot of talk. We'll tell you why. We'll talk
- 33:55Speaker 2: about Steven Vogt. He's the manager of the Cleveland Guardians
- 33:59Speaker 2: who go to the playoffs every year. They're the number
- 34:01Speaker 2: two seed sitting back waiting for a wild card team
- 34:03Speaker 2: to play in the playoffs, he's still under contract with
- 34:07Speaker 2: Cleveland for a while. And I will tell you something
- 34:09Speaker 2: that I've covered in my career related to a situation
- 34:13Speaker 2: like this of a team hiring a coach and a manager.
- 34:15Speaker 2: We'll talk about the Mariners managerial search next. 11 o'clock,
- 34:18Speaker 2: we'll go to Los Angeles and talk to the Chargers play-by-play,
- 34:21Speaker 2: radio play-by-play guy, Matt Money-Smith, about what's wrong in L.A.
- 34:24Speaker 2: with the Chargers who come in to Seattle on Sunday. And,
- 34:27Speaker 2: of course, 1135 Factor Fiction all coming up from the
- 34:30Speaker 2: Seahawks headquarters in Renton on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back
- 34:52Speaker 2: to the show. Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre with you as
- 34:54Speaker 2: we are every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon here on
- 34:57Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM in Seattle. I'm at Seahawks headquarters in Renton
- 35:02Speaker 2: where they're practicing today. First full practice of the game
- 35:05Speaker 2: week before they play the Los Angeles Chargers, the 0-3
- 35:07Speaker 2: Chargers Sunday at Lumen Field. First of two consecutive home games.
- 35:12Speaker 2: The Seahawks play the 49ers a week from this coming
- 35:15Speaker 2: Sunday in a week five game. And then they go
- 35:18Speaker 2: to Denver Thursday night on a short week, October 15th.
- 35:21Speaker 9: The 11th.
- 35:22Speaker 2: That's the next three for the Seahawks. We'll talk at
- 35:24Speaker 2: 11 o'clock to Matt Moneysmith, the play-by-play announcer for the
- 35:27Speaker 2: Los Angeles Chargers on what's going on down there with
- 35:30Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh's Justin Herbert struggles, Mike McDaniel, the new offensive
- 35:34Speaker 2: play caller struggles. We'll talk Chargers, the Seahawks' next opponent,
- 35:38Speaker 2: and our weekly feature of opponents of the Seahawks at
- 35:41Speaker 2: 11 o'clock today. The Mariners are now into the second
- 35:44Speaker 2: day of their managerial search that President of Baseball Operations
- 35:48Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto said was going to be, quote, exhaustive. Already
- 35:53Speaker 2: emerging as a leading candidate, Torrey Lavello. He's the 10-year
- 35:57Speaker 2: manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He won the National League
- 36:01Speaker 2: title and went to the World Series in 2023 when
- 36:03Speaker 2: he was the manager of the year. Arizona's the one
- 36:06Speaker 2: managerial job he's had. He's a former infielder. He played
- 36:09Speaker 2: eight major league seasons for the Tigers, Yankees, Angels, Phillies, A's, Cleveland, and, yes,
- 36:15Speaker 2: for the Mariners. 36 games for the M's in 1994.
- 36:20Speaker 2: He's 61 years old. He's known for having rich relationships
- 36:22Speaker 2: with his Diamondbacks players. Why are people talking about Torrey
- 36:27Speaker 2: Lovello as a prime candidate? Well, his Arizona contract ended
- 36:30Speaker 2: this past weekend when the Diamondbacks didn't make the playoffs.
- 36:34Speaker 2: MLB.com reported that the Diamondbacks and Lovello have not talked
- 36:38Speaker 2: about a new deal, or at least hadn't as of
- 36:40Speaker 2: the start of this week. This week, KTAR Radio in
- 36:44Speaker 2: Phoenix said, On it, Diamondbacks president and CEO Derek Hall,
- 36:49Speaker 2: not the Seahawks linebacker, but the Diamondbacks president.
- 36:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Not the one that builds trucks in his driveway that
- 36:56Speaker 2: smashes cameras and drives all the time. The other Derek Hall,
- 37:00Speaker 2: the Diamondbacks president and CEO, said of Lavello, he said
- 37:04Speaker 2: this on the air, on the record, quote, if he
- 37:06Speaker 2: walks out this door, he's going to get a job
- 37:08Speaker 2: in a heartbeat, and he should, because I do think
- 37:12Speaker 2: he's one of the best managers in the game. That's
- 37:15Speaker 2: a weird thing for the team president to say if
- 37:17Speaker 2: the team is about to re-sign their manager, isn't it?
- 37:19Speaker 3: I think it means that he has free reign to
- 37:22Speaker 3: explore options.
- 37:23Speaker 2: It sure does. It sounds like it.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Which is odd. It is very odd.
- 37:27Speaker 4: It just brings me back to Jermaine Curse after the
- 37:31Speaker 4: Super Bowl when his contract ran up. I don't know why,
- 37:35Speaker 4: but it just seemed like hometown discount. I remember him
- 37:39Speaker 4: saying on the air, but not that much. They kind
- 37:43Speaker 4: of just let him walk.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Of course, he was a former undrafted free agent from
- 37:48Speaker 2: Lakewood and from UW when Go got his, when he
- 37:51Speaker 2: got his. Lovello has said he wants to stay in Arizona,
- 37:55Speaker 2: but he also says he, quote, wants to be wanted.
- 37:58Speaker 2: He later clarified that and told reporters in Arizona it
- 38:01Speaker 2: wasn't that he didn't feel wanted in the Diamondbacks organization.
- 38:04Speaker 2: But let's face it, his contract's over and they haven't
- 38:06Speaker 2: re-upped or even talked about it yet.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Yeah, for his next job, regardless of where it would be.
- 38:12Speaker 4: He wants to be wanted. And that doesn't discount the,
- 38:15Speaker 4: you know, the Diamondbacks. But he wants to feel wanted,
- 38:18Speaker 4: which is pay me.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 38:21Speaker 4: That's what I would say. And yeah, I mean, that's
- 38:24Speaker 4: how I feel about jobs that I take.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Exactly. Mike Benton is going to be on hosting for
- 38:31Speaker 2: me tomorrow. I have to run down to the Bay Area.
- 38:33Speaker 2: A close friend of mine passed away in memorial service tomorrow.
- 38:36Speaker 3: Very sorry about that.
- 38:37Speaker 2: You're welcome. Thank you. Thanks for saying that. Thanks for
- 38:40Speaker 2: bringing in. Mike Benton in the fold tomorrow. Mike Wagerman,
- 38:42Speaker 2: by the way, great guy. Covered the Raiders with him.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Going to his memorial service tomorrow. It would have been
- 38:48Speaker 2: his 60th birthday tomorrow, October 1st.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Way too young.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Hats off to Wags. But Mike Benton's going to be
- 38:55Speaker 2: in here tomorrow. He is the college classmate and friends
- 38:59Speaker 2: with Stephen Vogt. You know who Stephen Vogt is? Stephen
- 39:03Speaker 2: Vogt and Mike Benton went to Azusa Pacific, I learned
- 39:06Speaker 2: this morning from Mike. Yep. And tomorrow, Mike Benton said
- 39:09Speaker 2: he's going to campaign for Steven Vogt to be the
- 39:11Speaker 2: new manager. I hope I'm not talking out of turn here.
- 39:14Speaker 8: I'm all in.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I am all in. Who's Steven Vogt? He's 41 years old.
- 39:19Speaker 2: He's the manager of the Cleveland Guardians, who are the
- 39:21Speaker 2: number two seed in the American League playoffs, just waiting
- 39:23Speaker 2: for an opponent to finalize itself in the first round
- 39:26Speaker 2: of the playoffs this week. Vogt, this is the first
- 39:29Speaker 2: time as a manager in Cleveland. He has won the
- 39:33Speaker 2: AL Central. He's won a division title in each of
- 39:34Speaker 2: the first three years he's been a manager, including this one.
- 39:38Speaker 2: This is a different situation than Lavello, though, because before
- 39:41Speaker 2: the 2025 season, Vogt signed a contract extension with Cleveland.
- 39:45Speaker 2: It really quiet, under the radar. The Guardians really never
- 39:48Speaker 2: announced it. It just came out. It's believed to be
- 39:51Speaker 2: through 2028. So if the Mariners wanted to– and why
- 39:55Speaker 2: are the Mariners even linked to him? Well, he and
- 39:58Speaker 2: his wife, Stephen Vogt and his wife, have an off-season
- 40:00Speaker 2: home in Tumwater. And they come here a lot. And
- 40:05Speaker 2: they have a lot of ties to the Pacific Northwest
- 40:07Speaker 2: and to Washington and Western Washington in particular. this is
- 40:13Speaker 2: somewhat reminiscent to what I lived with in my very
- 40:16Speaker 2: first beat writing, second beat writing job after I covered
- 40:18Speaker 2: the A's, I covered the Oakland Raiders. And the Oakland
- 40:21Speaker 2: Raiders traded their coach, John Gruden, when he was still
- 40:25Speaker 2: up and coming, young, blonde, just catch me out. Traded
- 40:31Speaker 2: him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Al Davis traded a
- 40:36Speaker 2: coach still under contract to the Raiders, John Gruden, for cash.
- 40:40Speaker 2: He was strapped for cash. He had a stadium in Oakland,
- 40:43Speaker 2: an aging stadium. It wasn't making him money. And for
- 40:45Speaker 2: millions of dollars, he sent John Gruden to Tampa Bay.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Traded him. And then? Nine months later, John Gruden stuck
- 40:54Speaker 2: it up Al Davis' rear end and won the Super
- 40:56Speaker 2: Bowl over the Raiders.
- 40:57Speaker 4: That's my favorite part of that.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I think I told you the story of seeing John
- 41:01Speaker 2: Gruden under the stadium in San Diego right after that
- 41:03Speaker 2: Super Bowl ended. He turns the corner and sees us
- 41:06Speaker 2: Raider beat writers. And he says, what'd you think of that? Blank.
- 41:09Speaker 2: with a huge grin on his face, high-fiving us. He
- 41:13Speaker 2: was so reveling in it.
- 41:14Speaker 4: And of note also, my good friend Raheem Morris was
- 41:18Speaker 4: a quality control coach in his first job in the
- 41:20Speaker 4: NFL for John Gruden at that team.
- 41:23Speaker 2: That team destroyed the Raiders. They knew every play that
- 41:26Speaker 2: was coming because the Raiders didn't change their calls when
- 41:28Speaker 2: Gruden was a coach. That's a whole other story. But
- 41:31Speaker 2: could the Mariners trade one of their starting pitchers that
- 41:35Speaker 2: everyone loves? one of their top prospects for Steven Vogt,
- 41:39Speaker 2: the Cleveland manager. Wow. Who's still under contract. Could that happen?
- 41:43Speaker 3: How many times have you seen that happen in baseball?
- 41:46Speaker 2: In baseball, I've never seen it happen. Me neither. Is
- 41:49Speaker 2: it possible? It is possible. Okay. And if someone's under contract,
- 41:54Speaker 2: you trade an asset to get them. Now, someone may
- 41:56Speaker 2: correct me and say Major League Baseball rules are against it.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I don't believe it is impossible.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Okay.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Could they make that trade? I don't know that it's
- 42:04Speaker 2: even been done in baseball, but it has been done
- 42:06Speaker 2: in the NFL and has been done in other sports.
- 42:08Speaker 2: But the point is, is that Steven Vogt, as popular
- 42:11Speaker 2: as he is to those of us here in the
- 42:12Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest, especially people in Tumwater, is still under contract
- 42:15Speaker 2: and Torrey Lovello isn't. You're going to hear those names
- 42:18Speaker 2: floating around in the Mariners' managerial searches, among others, but
- 42:23Speaker 2: just wanted to throw that out there. It was a
- 42:25Speaker 2: good memory of John Gruden getting traded to Tampa Bay.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Up next, let's go to present-day NFL. As a matter
- 42:30Speaker 2: of fact, this week, whom the Seahawks are facing. That's
- 42:33Speaker 2: the Los Angeles Chargers. They're 0-3. What's going on with
- 42:36Speaker 2: the Chargers? We're going to find out next from Maddie Money-Smith,
- 42:39Speaker 2: the play-by-play announcer for Chargers Radio, who joins us next.
- 42:43Speaker 2: 1135 Factor Fiction. Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the
- 42:46Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel coming up from Seahawks headquarters
- 42:49Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 43:03Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Good morning from Seahawks headquarters. Headlines are brought to you
- 43:07Speaker 2: by Frostbite Coors Light. As cold as the Rockies, the
- 43:10Speaker 2: Seahawks are returning to practice today after their loss in
- 43:13Speaker 2: Washington and a normal player's day off on Tuesday. Practicing
- 43:16Speaker 2: for their game Sunday against the 0-3 Los Angeles Chargers.
- 43:19Speaker 2: The story of practice today is whether Julian Love is
- 43:21Speaker 2: going to be in it. The Pro Bowl veteran's safety
- 43:23Speaker 2: missed the Washington game with a calf injury. Coach Mike
- 43:26Speaker 2: McDonald said Monday Love may practice this week. The coach
- 43:29Speaker 2: talks at about 12.30 here today. Amazon reportedly has a
- 43:33Speaker 2: deal to extend Kirk Herbstreet as their television analyst for
- 43:36Speaker 2: its Thursday night NFL package, but The Athletic is also
- 43:40Speaker 2: reporting the extension as an outcause if Rams coach Sean
- 43:43Speaker 2: McVay wants to quit football and get into broadcasting football.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Two days after the Mariners announced Dan Wilson is out
- 43:50Speaker 2: as Mariners manager. One day after President Jerry DiPoto said
- 43:53Speaker 2: the team is in a new culture and a new
- 43:54Speaker 2: leader from outside the franchise. Multiple reports of the M's
- 43:58Speaker 2: top candidate as Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torrey Lavello. We talked
- 44:02Speaker 2: about him last segment. Lavello's contract with Arizona just ended
- 44:05Speaker 2: when the Diamondbacks didn't make the playoffs. Those playoffs began
- 44:09Speaker 2: yesterday with game one's. Best of three wild card series.
- 44:12Speaker 2: All these teams are now on the cusp of winning
- 44:14Speaker 2: a series in game two today. The Braves, who beat
- 44:16Speaker 2: the Phillies yesterday. The White Sox, who beat the Trash Cans.
- 44:18Speaker 2: The Yankees, who beat the Red Sox. And the Padres,
- 44:22Speaker 2: who blanked the Cubs. Game two is beginning at 11
- 44:24Speaker 2: o'clock right now, actually, today. NHL season began last night
- 44:28Speaker 2: with five games, including Vancouver taking a three-goal lead at Edmonton,
- 44:31Speaker 2: blowing that lead. And then the Canucks winning in overtime
- 44:34Speaker 2: in a banger game, 6-5. Kraken's opener is tomorrow, 6 p.m.
- 44:39Speaker 8: At Calgary.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Right here, your home for the Kraken. KJR-FM. The Kraken's
- 44:43Speaker 2: home opener is Sunday evening at Climate Pledge Arena, also
- 44:45Speaker 2: against Calgary, and also right here on KJR. The Packers'
- 44:49Speaker 2: offensive line's a mess. That's why Green Bay has signed
- 44:51Speaker 2: former Seahawks guard Lakin Tomlinson off the Cowboys practice squad.
- 44:55Speaker 2: The Packers also signed former first-round pick Mekhi Becton to
- 44:58Speaker 2: the Green Bay practice squad, and today the Packers are
- 45:01Speaker 2: signing former first-round pick and guard Kevin Zeitler. Packs one
- 45:05Speaker 2: and two. That's why the NFL flexed Green Bay's game
- 45:08Speaker 2: next week with Chicago from the late Sunday window to
- 45:11Speaker 2: the early Sunday TV window. That clears 49ers at Seahawks
- 45:14Speaker 2: next week for the National Game of the Week on
- 45:16Speaker 2: Fox in the late Sunday afternoon window. But before they
- 45:19Speaker 2: get to there, the Seahawks have to play the Chargers
- 45:23Speaker 2: on Sunday at Lumen Field. The Chargers are surprisingly 0-3,
- 45:27Speaker 2: coming off their loss in Buffalo, a narrow loss where
- 45:30Speaker 2: they created a lot of turnovers. But their offense still
- 45:33Speaker 2: isn't performing to what was expected when they brought new
- 45:36Speaker 2: Play caller Mike McDaniel and the former Dolphins coach to
- 45:39Speaker 2: work with quarterback Justin Herbert. It's just not working so
- 45:43Speaker 2: far in Los Angeles. Here to talk about it is
- 45:45Speaker 2: the Chargers play-by-play announcer, Matt Moneysmith from Los Angeles, joining
- 45:50Speaker 2: us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Good morning to you, sir.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Good morning to you, sir. How are you, Greg? Thanks
- 45:57Speaker 5: for having me.
- 45:58Speaker 2: You are welcome. You are welcome. Thanks for being on.
- 46:01Speaker 2: So we all see from afar the Chargers are 0-3.
- 46:03Speaker 2: If you can pinpoint reasons why, what would that be?
- 46:08Speaker 5: Offense is not, you know, launched yet. It's just kind
- 46:11Speaker 5: of stuck in the blocks. It feels like opening drives
- 46:14Speaker 5: have been good. And then the rest of the game,
- 46:18Speaker 5: there's not a lot there for whatever reason. And I
- 46:22Speaker 5: think there's probably a number of things you can point
- 46:24Speaker 5: to one interior, the offensive line, particularly right guard has
- 46:27Speaker 5: been A little bit of an issue. Receivers aren't really
- 46:31Speaker 5: separating as much as we thought. Take another step this
- 46:35Speaker 5: year with Mike McDaniel. We've seen Sanjay Lal, who's been
- 46:38Speaker 5: their wide receiver coach now since actually Brandon Staley was there.
- 46:42Speaker 5: So he has worked with Q, Quentin Johnston, to see
- 46:45Speaker 5: him take these incremental steps and getting better year after year.
- 46:48Speaker 5: I thought Ladd was going to have a big breakout
- 46:49Speaker 5: year this year, and he's been good. He's just been
- 46:51Speaker 5: dinged up. But I think probably the big driving force
- 46:55Speaker 5: is we had an idea that Omari and Hampton could
- 46:58Speaker 5: perhaps lead the league in rushing and that Justin Herbert
- 47:00Speaker 5: would be a viable MVP candidate. And the two of
- 47:03Speaker 5: them just have not looked natural or very comfortable in
- 47:07Speaker 5: this offense through three games.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Let's go to Ladd McConkie real quick because I talked
- 47:11Speaker 2: to Farhan Lajji, a friend of mine who covered Chargers
- 47:14Speaker 2: training camp last month, and he told me, Greg, the
- 47:16Speaker 2: Chargers don't want anyone to throw to really. No deep
- 47:18Speaker 2: threats that defenses have to game plan against. Keenan Allen's
- 47:20Speaker 2: not there anymore. McConkie, you mentioned, had a crack rib
- 47:24Speaker 2: to start the season. He only has 12 catches through
- 47:27Speaker 2: two weeks. Do the Chargers have enough receiving-wise to make
- 47:31Speaker 2: defenses have to play them honestly, or is McConkie just
- 47:34Speaker 2: getting a preponderance of coverage?
- 47:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's it. I mean, he's really kind
- 47:39Speaker 5: of been their singular offensive threat. You know, the tight ends.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Njoku had a really nice first game, and, you know,
- 47:49Speaker 5: was a big part of the reason why they lost
- 47:50Speaker 5: to the Raiders with, you know, just didn't unexplainable, inexplainable
- 47:55Speaker 5: turnover that led to an interception. But, you know, I don't,
- 47:59Speaker 5: I just, I guess if you just throw it in
- 48:01Speaker 5: the category of deep threat. Yeah. I mean, there's, there's
- 48:03Speaker 5: really not one, you know, they've been throwing downfield, the
- 48:05Speaker 5: five foot eight, 165 pound Darius Davis, who really never
- 48:09Speaker 5: was able to crack the rotation the previous three years.
- 48:12Speaker 5: So um, they're searching, uh, Brennan Thompson being hurt. Doesn't help.
- 48:17Speaker 5: You know, he's certainly a guy with legitimate four, two
- 48:19Speaker 5: speed that would help take that top off, but he's
- 48:21Speaker 5: had drop issues as a rookie here early on and
- 48:24Speaker 5: he's not out there. Uh, he's been dinged up. So yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 5: I think, I think that's a part of it. I
- 48:28Speaker 5: think the fact that tight ends have, have not been
- 48:32Speaker 5: kind of what we thought they were going to be
- 48:33Speaker 5: as well. Obviously injuries, a part of that within Joku
- 48:35Speaker 5: with a broken leg and now Kolar out with a
- 48:37Speaker 5: hamstring and I think that's what it is or might
- 48:40Speaker 5: be something else. I mean, everyone's so dinged up. I
- 48:42Speaker 5: can't keep the injury straight. But to kind of answer
- 48:45Speaker 5: your question, yeah, I don't think there's anyone that's able
- 48:48Speaker 5: to take the top off of this thing to try
- 48:50Speaker 5: to help Ladd out. Now, he's still able to beat
- 48:52Speaker 5: coverage on his own. I think, you know, they're just
- 48:55Speaker 5: kind of keeping him on a little bit of a
- 48:57Speaker 5: snap count right now with the injury against the Raiders
- 48:59Speaker 5: when he took that shot to his back.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Yeah, cracked rib. Tough to breathe, let alone play football with.
- 49:05Speaker 2: This is Matt Money-Smith. He's the play-by-play announcer for the
- 49:08Speaker 2: Los Angeles Chargers joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline
- 49:10Speaker 2: before the Chargers come up here Sunday to play the Seahawks.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Justin Herbert, the result of all of this you just
- 49:16Speaker 2: outlined is that Justin Herbert is suddenly a sub-60% passer.
- 49:20Speaker 2: That number jumped out at me. He's got three touchdowns
- 49:23Speaker 2: against four interceptions, third most interceptions in the league. He's
- 49:27Speaker 2: been sacked eight times to your point about the offensive
- 49:29Speaker 2: line and issues a guard eight times in three games.
- 49:33Speaker 2: And of quarterback, you know this map, but of quarterbacks
- 49:36Speaker 2: who have played multiple games this year, Justin Herbert is
- 49:39Speaker 2: ranked 30th in passer rating. What's going on there? You
- 49:44Speaker 2: mentioned some of the contributing factors, but what do you
- 49:47Speaker 2: see how Justin Herbert has handled this and what might
- 49:50Speaker 2: be going on with him personally on the field?
- 49:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's kind of a salad of bad.
- 49:55Speaker 5: There's a lot of ingredients to it. So, one, I
- 49:58Speaker 5: don't know if he's entirely comfortable with the scheme and
- 50:01Speaker 5: all of the pre-snap motions, considering it is five years
- 50:03Speaker 5: prior to this. there was almost nothing. They were one
- 50:06Speaker 5: of the least pre-snap motion teams in the league. And
- 50:08Speaker 5: now he's orchestrating, you know, this offense that he's essentially
- 50:12Speaker 5: gone from, you know, GE math to advanced calculus with
- 50:16Speaker 5: what he's asked to do prior to the snap and
- 50:18Speaker 5: make sure everybody's set. And we've had all these pre-snap
- 50:20Speaker 5: penalties and there's just like a lot of that going
- 50:23Speaker 5: on pre-snap. That's one, two, three, Kind of the first
- 50:26Speaker 5: thing Mike McDaniel said in his diagnosis after watching every
- 50:29Speaker 5: single Justin Herbert snap of his career was we got
- 50:31Speaker 5: to get the ball out quick. Like this is a
- 50:33Speaker 5: guy that's been hanging on to the ball too long.
- 50:34Speaker 5: When he does get it out in under 2.4 seconds,
- 50:38Speaker 5: great things happen. He's got like a one 18 passer
- 50:41Speaker 5: rating and it's one of the best passer ratings in
- 50:42Speaker 5: the league and the numbers. And he went through all
- 50:44Speaker 5: of those advanced analytics and, And Herbert just won't do it.
- 50:47Speaker 5: Like there's, there's quick completions on these street three-step drops
- 50:51Speaker 5: that he's supposed to hit or these RPOs where you
- 50:53Speaker 5: got to pull that trigger right away that he's just
- 50:55Speaker 5: not doing it. You know, whether it's a Marian Hampton
- 50:58Speaker 5: or Darius Davis in the flat, the guys that are
- 51:00Speaker 5: the motion guys that are typically the recipients of those
- 51:02Speaker 5: quick action passes. Like, I think they are pre-snap motion 74%
- 51:07Speaker 5: of the time, number one in the league. And the
- 51:09Speaker 5: motion player is the target of the play 5% of
- 51:12Speaker 5: the time, the lowest in the league. And so I
- 51:15Speaker 5: think it's stuff like that that's just got to, there's
- 51:17Speaker 5: got to be a comfort level that's found where you
- 51:21Speaker 5: run and execute the play that was called and you
- 51:24Speaker 5: just trust it. And I think there's still that sort of,
- 51:27Speaker 5: you know, whether it's getting used to it or believing
- 51:31Speaker 5: in it, sort of situation that he's got to get
- 51:33Speaker 5: more comfortable with and just get through and just pull
- 51:35Speaker 5: the trigger and start throwing some of these quick passes
- 51:38Speaker 5: that the play has drawn up to kind of lead to.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Money Smith is the play-by-play announcer for the Chargers. His
- 51:44Speaker 2: voice here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline before the Chargers
- 51:47Speaker 2: and Seahawks play on Sunday. Okay, Mike McDaniel. I had
- 51:52Speaker 2: Jory Epstein. She's the senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports.
- 51:55Speaker 2: We have her on every Tuesday. And yesterday when I
- 51:57Speaker 2: asked her about the Chargers, she said when she's talked
- 51:59Speaker 2: to people around the league, they're not sure. They think,
- 52:02Speaker 2: in fact, it's not working. The mesh between Mike McDaniel
- 52:06Speaker 2: and how he wants to play offense and how Jim
- 52:07Speaker 2: Harbaugh wants to run an offense and how he wants
- 52:09Speaker 2: his offense to be. What have you noticed about that relationship?
- 52:13Speaker 2: Is it awkward? It seems to be different philosophies for sure,
- 52:18Speaker 2: if not personalities.
- 52:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think I'd say it's awkward. I think
- 52:23Speaker 5: they're both very eclectic personalities. But Coach Harbaugh has been
- 52:28Speaker 5: nothing but effusive in praise. Through training camp, after week one,
- 52:33Speaker 5: week two, even his latest presser yesterday said that there
- 52:36Speaker 5: are no plans to change the play call or to
- 52:39Speaker 5: change the scheme to do any of that. So I
- 52:42Speaker 5: think he's still... has faith in, in coach McGann. I
- 52:45Speaker 5: think it's hard to argue, right? The guy has been
- 52:47Speaker 5: part of offenses, every single place he's gone that have
- 52:52Speaker 5: been exceptional, you know, whether it's as a run game coordinator,
- 52:54Speaker 5: as a quarterback coaches and OC as a head coach.
- 52:58Speaker 5: So I think it's just trying to figure out what's
- 53:00Speaker 5: going wrong with this one. Why, why is this particular
- 53:03Speaker 5: iteration not working? Did they have the wrong personnel? Is
- 53:06Speaker 5: it just a single person? sort of issue on every
- 53:09Speaker 5: single play, whether that's guard protection situations or allowing backside
- 53:13Speaker 5: defenders to chase runners down? Is it running backs not
- 53:16Speaker 5: picking the right slot to hit and instead continually trying
- 53:20Speaker 5: to bounce this thing outside and go for the home run?
- 53:23Speaker 5: And it's leading the second and nines and third and
- 53:26Speaker 5: eights instead of second and fives and third and twos.
- 53:29Speaker 5: And so I think as they try to diagnose that, ultimately,
- 53:33Speaker 5: For me, from what I've seen, it comes down to
- 53:37Speaker 5: Justin Herbert and Mike McDaniel, and are they comfortable? Is
- 53:41Speaker 5: Mike McDaniel comfortable that Justin Herbert's going to run the
- 53:43Speaker 5: play and have the hot read or have the first
- 53:46Speaker 5: option or run through the progressions that he anticipates he's
- 53:49Speaker 5: going to do, and does Justin Herbert trust the play
- 53:51Speaker 5: that's coming into his helmet? I was watching, and I
- 53:54Speaker 5: don't know, I have not been able to kind of
- 53:56Speaker 5: do the autopsy on it, but they had a first
- 53:58Speaker 5: and goal from the three. They were on the pistol,
- 54:01Speaker 5: and it looked like it was set up to be
- 54:03Speaker 5: a pass play. Herbert changed the play, got under center,
- 54:06Speaker 5: handed off to Omari and Hampton, and they've got a
- 54:08Speaker 5: second and goal from the one. And next thing you know,
- 54:11Speaker 5: instead of just getting right back on it and either
- 54:13Speaker 5: handing it to your 225 pound back or sneaking it
- 54:16Speaker 5: with your 240 pound quarterback, they're huddling, they break huddle.
- 54:20Speaker 5: Now we've got a motion. Now we've got a secondary motion, bang,
- 54:23Speaker 5: false start, next snap, false start. It's kind of that
- 54:26Speaker 5: sort of stuff that I think is leading to that disconnect,
- 54:30Speaker 5: you know, of, do I really, do we really need
- 54:31Speaker 5: to be doing this? Like, They had to play against
- 54:34Speaker 5: the Raiders where it's a third and one. And again,
- 54:38Speaker 5: same thing, huddle up. Here comes a motion center snaps
- 54:41Speaker 5: the ball right into Trey Harris's knee as he's motioning
- 54:44Speaker 5: through from right to left. And it's nearly a turnover
- 54:46Speaker 5: and they have to punt. I think it's those sort
- 54:48Speaker 5: of instances where, as you alluded to Greg, like the
- 54:51Speaker 5: Jim Harbaugh idea of just, Hey, we're running this ball
- 54:54Speaker 5: or we're sneaking this ball and look at these cool
- 54:57Speaker 5: orbit and horseshoe motions and watch what we're going to
- 54:59Speaker 5: get here. Like it's just not that part of it's
- 55:01Speaker 5: not good.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Matt Money-Smith, the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 55:07Speaker 2: You also, for years, I mean, it's been like almost
- 55:09Speaker 2: 20 years, you've co-hosted a show with Petros Papadakis back
- 55:12Speaker 2: in Los Angeles, down there in Los Angeles. We got
- 55:15Speaker 2: to ask you about that because Petros is a weekly
- 55:18Speaker 2: guest of Dave Softy Mahler on our show in the afternoons,
- 55:20Speaker 2: and they have a rollicking time. And his personality, his neurosis,
- 55:25Speaker 2: Petros is, what's that like? So many years being a
- 55:29Speaker 2: co-host with Petros, and that sounds like a rollicking time. Yeah,
- 55:33Speaker 2: it's fun.
- 55:34Speaker 5: It's, uh, it's our 20th year. So pretty wild that
- 55:38Speaker 5: I think we're the longest. I don't think I know
- 55:40Speaker 5: we are the longest running continuous in its time slot.
- 55:44Speaker 5: I know that's a lot of qualifiers, but basically we're
- 55:46Speaker 5: the longest running afternoon drive show in Los Angeles, which
- 55:49Speaker 5: is hard to do. So, um, Clearly, when they put
- 55:52Speaker 5: us together, they figured something out. It's been really fun.
- 55:55Speaker 5: I think we both share a similar sense of humor.
- 55:59Speaker 5: We both get each other in trouble a little bit
- 56:01Speaker 5: because one will egg the other on. And next thing
- 56:03Speaker 5: you know, you've gone too far and you're in the
- 56:05Speaker 5: boss's office having a meeting about what was said and
- 56:07Speaker 5: how we approached it, which I think kind of keeps
- 56:09Speaker 5: things fun for us. He's incredibly smart. And like I said,
- 56:15Speaker 5: it's just You don't know. I don't think he knows
- 56:18Speaker 5: a lot of times where I'm going to go. I
- 56:19Speaker 5: don't know where he's going to go. Yesterday, we must
- 56:21Speaker 5: have just spent, of our four hours, two hours just
- 56:24Speaker 5: laughing and replaying the USC radio call against Oregon over
- 56:30Speaker 5: and over again. And I just could not get off
- 56:34Speaker 5: of the sideline analyst saying... He slid feet first. His
- 56:38Speaker 5: feet are pointing forward after Pete Arbogast said that Dante
- 56:42Speaker 5: Moore dove, and it was clear that he dove. And
- 56:44Speaker 5: he said, why is he laying with his feet first?
- 56:46Speaker 5: And Deet said, well, it's because he was head first,
- 56:50Speaker 5: and they spun him around. Yeah. It's just stupid things
- 56:53Speaker 5: like that that entertain us for hours upon hours that
- 56:56Speaker 5: maybe people don't think are funny when they first hear it,
- 56:59Speaker 5: but we pound it into the ground to the point
- 57:01Speaker 5: where now they're along for the ride. I know that
- 57:03Speaker 5: was a long explanation that might not make sense to
- 57:05Speaker 5: people listening, but it's just those sort of moments that
- 57:08Speaker 5: keep things fresh and fun when you're 20 years into
- 57:12Speaker 5: a business partnership where you've got to try to entertain
- 57:15Speaker 5: each other along with the audience every day for four hours.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Let me ask you about USC because our Washington Huskies
- 57:21Speaker 2: go down there for a game on Saturday, and it
- 57:24Speaker 2: looks like a pivotal game on where the season's maybe
- 57:26Speaker 2: headed after USC's loss to Oregon and Washington's loss to
- 57:30Speaker 2: Minnesota at home. Where is USC? Jen Cohen, the athletic director,
- 57:34Speaker 2: we all know her here. Fife Gallup, she used to
- 57:36Speaker 2: be the Washington athletic director, of course, before she got
- 57:38Speaker 2: to USC. Is the patience wearing thin for Lincoln Riley?
- 57:42Speaker 2: Are the donors going to really step up and buy
- 57:44Speaker 2: him out? What's the USC situation right now, you think?
- 57:49Speaker 5: I think you hit it. on all fronts on that,
- 57:51Speaker 5: you know, just kind of the setup there, Greg. Yeah.
- 57:53Speaker 5: I mean, do they want to keep him around? No.
- 57:55Speaker 5: Do they have $ 70 million to buy him out, to
- 57:58Speaker 5: buy out his assistance, to maybe buy out the GM
- 58:01Speaker 5: that they just signed. So a big time head coach
- 58:04Speaker 5: can bring their own person in that they want to run.
- 58:08Speaker 5: their program? Probably not. It's a big number, you know,
- 58:12Speaker 5: and it took.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Them a lot of money.
- 58:15Speaker 5: And if I had to guess, cause I had heard
- 58:17Speaker 5: that Clay Helton had no offsets in his contract. So
- 58:21Speaker 5: I would guess the Lincoln Riley doesn't have offsets either
- 58:23Speaker 5: considering how big of a deal it was when they
- 58:26Speaker 5: hired him away from Oklahoma and how hard it had
- 58:28Speaker 5: been for them to get a premier coach Um, so yeah,
- 58:32Speaker 5: I think they would like to move on. I don't
- 58:33Speaker 5: know if they can. Um, it's been the same issue
- 58:36Speaker 5: since he got here, right? Check out my super cool offense.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Isn't this wild? Watch this really cool smoke and mirrors
- 58:42Speaker 5: set up for this big explosive play. And we gave
- 58:45Speaker 5: up 45 points and lost like it's, there's no defense.
- 58:49Speaker 5: There's no true identity there. To the team other than
- 58:53Speaker 5: isn't my offense cool? It's a hard way to win
- 58:57Speaker 5: in an era where you have programs that have identity,
- 59:01Speaker 5: that have toughness, that have leadership, that kind of over
- 59:06Speaker 5: sort of sees an entire program and what you think
- 59:08Speaker 5: you're going to get every single Saturday. And I don't
- 59:11Speaker 5: think that's the case with USC. So I think they'd
- 59:13Speaker 5: like to move on. Um, I've been a little, I've
- 59:16Speaker 5: been a little disappointed in Jen. I feel like she's
- 59:19Speaker 5: allowed Lincoln to kind of get the upper hand in
- 59:21Speaker 5: this relationship. I don't think he's, you know, been a
- 59:25Speaker 5: steward of the program. You know, he ended the rivalry
- 59:29Speaker 5: with Notre Dame, which is inexcusable and should have been
- 59:31Speaker 5: a fireable offense the second he suggested it like for cause. Um,
- 59:37Speaker 5: So I don't know where they're going. I do think
- 59:39Speaker 5: the freshman class they have is incredibly talented. But that's, again,
- 59:44Speaker 5: it's all offense. Luke Waifu is a great defensive end,
- 59:46Speaker 5: but that doesn't mean you have a defensive identity. I mean,
- 59:48Speaker 5: like I was watching the game against Oregon. It's a
- 59:50Speaker 5: tie game. And I mean, you're watching Mike McDonald defenses
- 59:54Speaker 5: every Sunday. I watched Jesse Minner's defenses for the last
- 59:57Speaker 5: two years. Exceptional defenses, guys that came from college.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: And what do you do?
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: You put six guys on the line of scrimmage when
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: you're going to rush three and you drop three of
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: them out and you force the quarterback to figure out
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: which three are coming and which three aren't. I'm watching,
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: you know, Gary Patterson just with three guys on the
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: line of scrimmage. Like this is, this is from 10
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: years ago.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Like what, what are we doing?
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: This, this is, this is not hard. It's modern football
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: and it's adapting. And you know, he allowed, Dominic Raiola
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: to pick them apart in those moments. I know I'm
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: rambling on a little bit, but it's probably just because
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: there's so many issues there that I don't know how
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: they overcome, and I won't be surprised if they lose
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: four or five games.
- 1:00:33Speaker 10: Wow.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Matt Money-Smith, one-stop shopping. We've got Huskies at USC on Saturday,
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: and the Seahawks hosting his Chargers. He'll be calling it
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: for Chargers Radio on Sunday. I'll see you in the
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: press box in the stadium on Sunday in Seattle. Thanks
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: for coming on, sir.
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: Yeah, you got it, Greg. Look forward to seeing you, man.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Thank you very much for being on. Matt
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Moneysmith from Los Angeles. Petros Papadakis, they're co-hosting for 20
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: years down at Los Angeles Radio. What a time that
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: must be. Petros' personality. But Matt Moneysmith joining us on
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline saying that, yeah, Justin Herbert not
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: taking short throws that are there in Mike McDaniel's schemes.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: A lot of window dressing and pre-snap motions that just
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: aren't getting effective at all that Mike McDaniel's brought in.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Lots to change on offense, he says, for the Chargers.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Got injuries on the offensive line. They're one receiver that
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: is of note and threat. Vlad McConkie had been playing
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: with a cracked rib. That's what the Chargers are bringing
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: to Lumen Field on Sunday against the Seahawks. Up next,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: your chance to be a part of the show. A
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: lot of comments coming in about the Mariners' next manager,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: who you'd like it to be, about the Seahawks benching
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: rookie Jadarian Price for his fumbles. We'll read back your
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: texts on the Tacoma Dodge text line And your talkbacks,
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: 30-second voicemail message. We'll play those next 11.35. Factor Fiction,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: your chance to win $ 1, 000. We do it every day
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: at 11.35 thanks to Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. It's
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: all coming up from Seahawks headquarters on 97 to 93.3.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: You nailed it. There we go.
- 1:02:27Speaker 10: I know you've heard that your actions speak louder than
- 1:02:31Speaker 10: your words.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting.
- 1:02:35Speaker 10: Since DePoto had his talk, we'll see what his actions
- 1:02:40Speaker 10: are when he hires the manager. And if the manager
- 1:02:44Speaker 10: is someone who's going to be a yes man, those
- 1:02:47Speaker 10: words were not true.
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: They're hollow.
- 1:02:50Speaker 11: I went to a Mariners game. Over the Labor Day weekend,
- 1:02:55Speaker 11: we lost, of course. Four hits and a funeral. After
- 1:03:00Speaker 11: the game, what really stunned me was the apathy. You
- 1:03:04Speaker 11: couldn't tell by the crowd whether we had won or lost.
- 1:03:08Speaker 11: I just think that Seattle's just got too much money
- 1:03:10Speaker 11: to burn. 36,000 people go down there, and they really
- 1:03:15Speaker 11: don't care.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I was just watching ESPN. Mariners hired Walter Matthau. as
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: their new manager.
- 1:03:24Speaker 12: I'm really worried about the Seahawks going on a two-
- 1:03:26Speaker 12: to three-game losing streak, specifically a three-game losing streak. I
- 1:03:30Speaker 12: don't think the Chargers are really the kind of team
- 1:03:31Speaker 12: that loses four games in a row. I don't think
- 1:03:33Speaker 12: Justin Herbert's the kind of person who has that many
- 1:03:36Speaker 12: crappy games in a row, and Mike McDaniel's offense sluggish
- 1:03:40Speaker 12: that many games in a row.
- 1:03:41Speaker 9: It just doesn't seem like that happens. As far as managers,
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: I think Jerry DiPoto should be the Mariners' manager. He's
- 1:03:46Speaker 9: got the right attitude about a manager. He knows those teams.
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: And so many times you've seen a guy step down
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: and go into the role.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: That was loaded.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: That would be Jerry DiPoto as the bench manager. Oh,
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: my goodness. If we thought leadership was a problem from
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: him upstairs, that would be something. Yeah, the three-game losing
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: streak that he's alluding to would be Chargers, 49ers, and
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: at Broncos are the next three for the Seahawks. I
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: don't see it, but I get his point. Eventually, the
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Chargers are going to write themselves, you would think. Matt Money-Smith,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: the play-by-play announcer for the Chargers, telling us last segment,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Justin Herbert's got open guys quick and early in plays,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: and he's not throwing to them. He's holding on the
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: ball and trying to make bigger plays. That's part of
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the reason he has eight sacks in three games. 49451
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: is the Tacoma Dodge text line. Thank you, 360207. Every
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: area code in the country, I think, reminded me. I
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: totally forgot. 2002, October 2002, the Mariners traded Lou Piniella
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: to the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Randy Wynn was an all-star outfitter. This was like eight
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: months after the Raiders traded Gruden to the Buccaneers for
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: $ 8 million and two first-round picks. Eight months later, the
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Mariners did the same thing. Lou Piniella was still under contract.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: This was after that really disappointing 2002 season that was
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: coming off the 116 wins in 2001. And they let
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Piniella go and traded him, let him out of his
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: contract and traded him to Tampa Bay for Randy Wynn
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: and a minor league pitcher. That happened. So, yes.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Okay, there is a precedent. There is a precedent.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: The context of that is that Stephen Vogt still has...
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: it's believed to be has been re-signed through the 2028 season.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: He signed a contract extension quietly with the Cleveland guardians
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: before the 2025 season began. And the guardians have just
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: won their third straight division title. And a lot of
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: people want Steven Vogt to be the next Mariners manager.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: He has an off season home in Tacoma or Tumwater.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: He and his wife do. You're going to hear tomorrow
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: from Mike Ben. He's going to fill in for me
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: tomorrow on the show, hosting it. He is the Azusa
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Pacific classmate of Steven Vogt and his wife, So you
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: know who Mike Benton wants to be the next Mariners manager.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: That's ingrained institutional knowledge of the person.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Yes, it is. And a personal bias as well. Hey,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: you want to win $ 1, 000? Your chance is right now.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Oh, it's the band. Going back to campus. kind of
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: a campus we're going back to this week. Navy is
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: at Air Force. You cannot say I'm not consistent, Jessamyn.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Navy is at Air Force in a Commander-in-Chief trophy game
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: in Colorado this week. An 11 a.m. start at Colorado Springs.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Navy's 1-2. The Squids have lost two in a row.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Breaks my heart. They lost to Florida Atlantic.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: You hate to see it, Greg.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: I just hate to see it. And then they lost
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: to Alabama Birmingham. What was great about them losing to
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Alabama Birmingham is it came on It was an ESPN
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: doubleheader right after Army beat Temple by four and was
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: a fact or fiction win for us last week. So, yeah,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: really too bad the Squids have lost two in a row.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: They lost their starting quarterback last week. He was out injured.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Navy's planning to play two quarterbacks on Saturday against Air Force,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: which is 2-1. The Zoomies, they beat Duquesne, the Cougs'
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: favorite foe. The Air Force lost to North Dakota State.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Then the Zoomies won in overtime. Last weekend at Nevada,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: something of an upset. Zoomies are favored by three over
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: the Squids. Give me the Zoomies minus the three points
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: over those Squiddies. Air Force minus three over Navy. If
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: you agree, text FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: FICTION to 49451. If you could tell, I would pick
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: against Navy if they were playing Kennesaw State. It doesn't
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: matter who they play. I'm going to never, ever, ever
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: pick Navy in anything. Air Force minus three over Navy
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: in a Commander-in-Chief's game. 11 o'clock, it's on CBS National Television.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Air Force minus three at home over Navy to send
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: the squids to a third straight loss. Text FACT to
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: 49451 if you agree, and text FICTION to 49451 if
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: you disagree. Service Academy football rep here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: So you have about 12 minutes to do that, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: Ian Farnasso will have another pick here from Seahawks headquarters
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: at 2.35 p.m. Back to the text line. Oh, you
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: knew I was going to do that.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: I had a very good feeling. Don't want to try
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: to predict you, but yeah. We want to go back
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: to the text.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Go back to the text line. 425 says, I want
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Lou Brown as the Mariners' next manager. He has the experience.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Lou Brown, of course, is the Cleveland Indians manager from
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: Major League. Good reference. They're not quite that bad. On
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: the Seahawks, the 360, Mike McDonald says they have to
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: trust in Price but took him out of the game.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: So do you take Dan out of the game because
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: he's making mistakes? I understand he's– I don't know who
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Dan is. It must be a typo. I understand he's
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: a rookie, but come on. Absolutely love the show. Thanks
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: for that, 360. Yeah, that was a value judgment. And
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: that was an accountability move by Mike McDonald. And I
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: don't know if he would have done that with a veteran.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: But the fact that Price was in his third game
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: and he's so brand new to everything, including Mike McDonald's ways,
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: that was just a message sent. And to be in
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: a raincoat for the first two quarters of the game
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: definitely sent the message. And he echoed that message Price
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: did in the locker room after games. And I just
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: got to hold on to the ball and prioritize that.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: over anything else. It was the long game. You may
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: disagree with it, and that's why I asked on the
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: text line how you felt about it. But really, they
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: sacrificed that game for the next four or maybe five
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: years of Jadarian Price. The long game is what they
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: played with the rookie running back by sitting him and
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: putting him on the bench to think about it. Yeah.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I totally see from a leadership standpoint what they were doing.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Maybe you could say, well, in the NFL, he's a pro.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: He doesn't need to be treated that way. If you
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: don't play, the message gets in. If he trots right
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: back onto the field– He doesn't have the same message
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: in his mind that he does today of, hey, I'm
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: just going to hold on to the ball above everything else.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: There's that.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: And then also, I mean, I remember as a college
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: athlete watching a player get injured, tore her ACL. And
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: she came back. She was a year younger than me.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: And she was a freshman when I was a sophomore.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: And she had to sit out the entire year. And
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: she came bleeps out the next year because she sat
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: there and learned everything. And she couldn't play, you know,
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: hip to ankle brace, the whole thing. And she came
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: just destroying it the next year. And I thought that, wow,
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: there's a lot to be said for people who watch
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: and learn. And I think that sometimes I remember Mike
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: Leach did that to a couple quarterbacks. No, I just
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: wanted him to get a different look at it. And
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: so that might be a part of it, too.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That is true. But all signs are
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: that he, Price, is going to be full go and
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: getting the ball a lot early in the game to
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: reestablish himself in the offense.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: But it wasn't, I guess my point is that it
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: wasn't necessarily a punishment.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Like, hey, just sit down and watch.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: 425, our favorite U.S. Coast Guard listener. Don Mattingly would
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: be a good Mariners manager. He's just the interim manager
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: with the Phillies right now. I think he could turn
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: things around and get us back to the playoffs and
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: has been to the World Series as the bench coach
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: for the Blue Jays last year. If the Phillies don't
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: hire him back, I would go after him. Don Mattingly
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: took over in the middle of the season, early in
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: the season, actually, and turned the Phillies around after a
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: terrible start they had. That's interesting, Don Mattingly.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Well, you know I'm a fan of his.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: He has been a manager before with the Marlins, and
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: I believe he managed the Dodgers for a spell, if
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken. I know he's on their staff.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: He definitely has experience in the game and in baseball.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: He would have to do it his way. I'm not
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: sure he'd play iPad baseball yet another way that Jerry
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: DiPoto would have to change. We'll see. 360, Tumwater resident here.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: My daughter played basketball under Stephen Vogt's wife. He would
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: come to all the games. He was the most unassuming
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Major League player you can imagine and was absolutely gracious
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: and courteous to everyone around him. I would trade Kirby
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: for him. There you go. Starting pitcher George Kirby to
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: the Guardians for Steven Vogt. You heard it here first.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: That would be insane. And also, nothing would surprise me
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: these days.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: No, that's true. That is true. Here's an interesting one
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: about Eamon Worry, 206. Have they specialized Eamon Worry so
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: much that he can't play an actual safety position? One,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: meaning deep. Why not play him there instead of as
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: a decoy rusher against Washington? Well, he wasn't even a
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: decoy rusher because he rarely threatened the edge to come
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: into the backfield, unless he means just being there on
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: the edge of the line. But he was dropping coverage
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: quite a bit. He has not played safety for Mike McDonald.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: I mean, from the very first game that he had
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: the high ankle spring week one against the 49ers, he
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: was moving around. Even when he got hurt, that was
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: on the edge of the line of scrimmage of the
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Sam linebacker when DeMarcus Lawrence landed on his ankle. They
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: didn't draft him. They didn't trade up in the second
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: round to envision him to be a deep safety. They
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: envisioned him to be a linebacker in safety's clothing. Playing
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: him as a deep linebacker has never been an option
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: for Mike McDonald, so I don't expect it to be now.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: But it's an interesting point whether he could actually play
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: deep safety because they haven't tried him there. And for us,
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: he just walked into the room here at Seahawk headquarters.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: He's going to tell us what he's got on his show,
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: 12 until 3 next. We've got about five more, seven
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: more minutes left on Factor Fiction. Air Force is my pick.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Minus three, going to win by four more points over
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Navy at home in Colorado Spring Saturday. If you agree,
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 4551.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: He ends up next on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: to Seahawk Headquarters. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre, now joined by
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: Ian Furness, the mayor of Maple Valley with the Shorter
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: community today. Thank God. To Renton. Stumped Maple Valley Highway
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: and up a couple exits.
- 1:14:45Speaker 8: Don't even jump on 405. Bypass 405 or just jump
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: on the old through Renton, by the landing, and away
- 1:14:50Speaker 8: we go.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Here we are.
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: So, yeah, it's a good day. It's always a good
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: day to be here.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: What's that, 20 minutes, 15 minutes?
- 1:14:56Speaker 8: You got 20 or 25 minutes. Yeah, it's not bad.
- 1:14:58Speaker 8: It's not bad.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: We had the radio play-by-play guy for the Chargers on
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: last hour, and he was talking about Justin Herbert, and
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: he thinks part of Herbert's problem, he's got eight sacks
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: in three games, 30th ranked passer rating in the league
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: right now. He said that his problem is he's got
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: open receivers early in plays at McDaniels' system, but he's
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: not throwing to them. Is this a game where you're
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: worried about, oh, the Chargers actually get better this week
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: and Herbert looks like Herbert, or do you think this
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: should be a walk for the Seahawks?
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: I think because of what happened last week, you just
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: don't take anything for granted. I mean, Marcus Mariota beat you.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:15:34Speaker 8: I mean, and did he beat you or did you
- 1:15:36Speaker 8: beat yourselves with the draw?
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: They sure think they beat themselves, yep.
- 1:15:39Speaker 8: Which I think that's a justifiable way to look at it.
- 1:15:43Speaker 8: At the same time, Mariota made a couple plays.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Especially at the end. At the end.
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: And, you know, they took advantage of the two safeties that.
- 1:15:53Speaker 8: What's your read on DeAnthony Bell getting released and never
- 1:15:55Speaker 8: being activated? I.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: We... Brady Henderson asked about Bell, and oh, we love Bell.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what. They love his tackling.
- 1:16:05Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: That's why he was on the team, and that's why
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: he stayed.
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: Which special teams player, which that hasn't been great.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: No, that's right. Yeah.
- 1:16:13Speaker 8: It's a weird deal.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: It is weird. They had two practice squad safeties starting
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: in Washington, A.J. Finley and Rodney Thomas. And it showed.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: And we'll see if Julian Love comes back today. But
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: it's a good question. We've asked the question about the
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: Anthony Bell the same way.
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: Yeah, I thought, I mean, that was really, at the
- 1:16:28Speaker 8: end of the day, that's what was the story of
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: that game. I mean, they, Mariota, and when it came
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: down to it, you pick on those guys.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:36Speaker 8: You know, and then Mariota's, I think, he was talking
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: to Hugh the other day on Hardcore Football. He was
- 1:16:41Speaker 8: talking about the, you know, the third and seven to
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: clinch the game where he ran for nine yards. And
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: as Hugh said, I mean, he's, Mariota's probably run that,
- 1:16:48Speaker 8: you know, that a zillion times in his life.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:51Speaker 8: And knew exactly what to do. That's where the experience
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: paid off. And he's not as fast as he used
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: to be. He's not as, elusive as he used to be,
- 1:16:56Speaker 8: but he knew what the read was and he did
- 1:16:58Speaker 8: it and clinched the game. The turnovers killed him. That
- 1:17:02Speaker 8: just absolutely killed him. The Donald pick six jumps out
- 1:17:06Speaker 8: at you. The EPA on that was like 19 or something.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: He said he saw the linebacker. He just got bold
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: and thought he could fit it in, but he said
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: he saw the linebacker. He should have dirted it.
- 1:17:15Speaker 8: Manuel Wilson ran kind of a bad route coming out
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: of the backfield. Didn't help his case and Barnard didn't
- 1:17:20Speaker 8: do a great job either. He was one of those
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: Like you could look at all three guys at the
- 1:17:24Speaker 8: end of the day, the quarterback threw the ball, and
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: the pick six happened. So to get back to your
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: original question, yeah, I mean, this should be a win.
- 1:17:32Speaker 8: Should be.
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Should be a win.
- 1:17:35Speaker 8: Part of me thinks, really, are the Chargers going to
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: go 0-4?
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That's the text I had the same– or one of
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: our talkbacks was the same thing. Right, right. So Ian's
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: point was, if you missed it, we didn't talk about
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: it on the show. You probably did miss it. The
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Seahawks this morning signed a linebacker to the practice squad,
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Jimmy Ciarlo. who used to play for the Bills, and
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: to get him on the roster, they cut from the
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: practice squad, safety D'Anthony Bell. And Bell, we thought, was
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: going to be one of these guys who fills in
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: for Okada or Julian Love when they were injured. He
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: was starting at the beginning of training camp, D'Anthony Bell was,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: and now he's not even on the team, not even
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: on the practice squad.
- 1:18:12Speaker 8: It goes back to when we're out here in July,
- 1:18:14Speaker 8: and it's great to be here every day at the
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: Virginia Mason Athletic Center and doing the shows, interviewing guys,
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: talking face-to-face and all that, and giving the fans what
- 1:18:21Speaker 8: they want. That's a ton of Seahawks football content. We
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: can't tell anything from what happens in August. Like you
- 1:18:30Speaker 8: just said, DeAnthony Bell was with a couple guys banged up.
- 1:18:34Speaker 8: He was working at Eamon Worry Spot as the number
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: one guy there. Yes, he was. You had to figure
- 1:18:40Speaker 8: with special teams and depth and safety issues. When Bud
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: Clark got hurt, this guy's a lock. He's a 53-man
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: roster lock. That's not even a question. So you go
- 1:18:48Speaker 8: from that to being a practice squad guy to cut
- 1:18:50Speaker 8: is just, we don't know what's going on. I want
- 1:18:53Speaker 8: to mention, too, the Bud Clark thing is part of it, too.
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: Like it's Okada, Love, and Clark. Your top three deep
- 1:19:01Speaker 8: safeties are all hurt.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: That's true. Clark would be starting right now.
- 1:19:04Speaker 8: And that's hard. And they drafted Clark to be a starter.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Second-round pick.
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: Yeah, they drafted him to be a starter. And so
- 1:19:10Speaker 8: you lose all three of those guys. I mean, the
- 1:19:12Speaker 8: Okada thing, that's been lingering now for a month.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Hamstring. We talked about how those don't cook better overnight.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: You know where Jimmy Ciarlo went to school, Jessamyn? I
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: do know. College football? Take a wild guess. Hofstra? Army. Yeah.
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: I can't believe that was the lead story all day today.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: I left that until 11.55.
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: I know, that's a shocker.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: What do you got on the show?
- 1:19:34Speaker 8: Stunning, just more stunning than the Anthony Belgin cut. We'll get,
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: we got a Seahawk player coming in, I'm not sure
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: who it is yet, coming up at 12.30, because they're
- 1:19:41Speaker 8: doing things a little bit later today. We'll hear a
- 1:19:42Speaker 8: little bit from Mike McDonald after his news conference, mostly
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: just health. How's Julian Love? We'll get to that point,
- 1:19:48Speaker 8: and Okada, et cetera. So that's coming up in the
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: one o'clock hour. Stuart Mandel talking all things college football.
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: Kind of a sneaky, interesting game. You all right, Jess?
- 1:19:57Speaker 8: I heard you.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: You don't like my car?
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: She didn't think it was an interesting game. She didn't
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: like our show. That's all right.
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: That's why I left, Ian. No, I swallowed water down
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: the wrong pipe.
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: Okay. It's a sneaky game this weekend. USC-Washington. Two teams
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: that are not happy with where they are right now.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: They are not.
- 1:20:17Speaker 8: But they only have one loss each. But someone's going
- 1:20:19Speaker 8: to have the second. It's going to be bad. We'll
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: talk about that with Mandel and so much more. Corbin's
- 1:20:23Speaker 8: going to pop in here at 2, and I think
- 1:20:24Speaker 8: you'll probably pop in at her at some point, too,
- 1:20:26Speaker 8: with the news of the day from the news conference.
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: A lot going on. A lot of Seahawks talk today.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: A lot of Seahawks talk. Four days before they play
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: the Chargers at Lumen Field. Ian Furness is here with
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: me at Seahawks headquarters to cover that and talk about
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: it for the next three hours. He'll have Factor Fiction
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: at 2.35 for his pick next. That's coming up. Thanks
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: for listening. It'll be Mike Benton pinch-hitting for me tomorrow
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: on Crackin' Hockey opening day. That's fitting. He's going to
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: launch his Stephen Vogt campaign to be the new Mariners manager.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: The Azusa Pacific classmate of his. You'll get Mike tomorrow.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: You'll get Farhan Walji talking about the NFL tomorrow with Mike.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. He ends up next on 93.3 KJR FM.
