- 1:16Hello and welcome to another episode of Bible Women and Bathrobes.
- 1:19I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:21Anderson.
- 1:21And joining me today is an amazing member of our advisory board for Women warriors of Light, Amy Johnson.
- 1:28Amy, thank you for being here again today.
- 1:30Thank you for letting me.
- 1:32Oh my goodness.
- 1:33And it's so funny that that here we are talking about God's timing and before we even hit record on this podcast, Amy and I were talking about timing in her own life.
- 1:44And I'm like, oh my goodness, what are the odds that this exact topic is what we're talking about today?
- 1:51So I think it's not by chance that Amy and I are discussing God's Tim in our lives today, right, Amy?
- 2:00I.
- 2:01I agree.
- 2:01And I really, truly believe God is in the details.
- 2:05Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:07So, guys, today if you want to follow along, we are in Luke chapter two and we're going to be covering verses 41 to 51.
- 2:17And like I said, this is one of the few stories we have of young Jesus.
- 2:21And probably the reason we have it is it's a story that scared Mary so much that she remembered it.
- 2:31I tell you what, when my kids scared me, I remember those experiences from their childhood.
- 2:36But I don't think the situation was as scary for Jesus because he knew what he was doing and he was totally confident who he was and what he was doing and all that stuff.
- 2:47So this is the story of Mary and Joseph, who were devout Israelites.
- 2:54And if you, if you read in verse 41, it talks about now, his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of The Passover.
- 3:02Every year at the Passover they would go to Jerusalem.
- 3:06And finally when Jesus was 12, they said, guess what, you get to come this year.
- 3:11And he's probably like, sweet, here we go, I get to go to Jerusalem.
- 3:16Now we know that the family had been to Egypt and they've come back now.
- 3:21And so Here we have 12 year old Jesus on the cusp of manhood here and it says, and when he was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
- 3:31And then it says, and when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem.
- 3:38And Joseph and his mother knew not of it, but they supposing him to have been in the company went a day's journey and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.
- 3:49And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem seeking him.
- 3:54Now I know you guys are thinking, how could any parent leave and not realize their son was with them?
- 4:00But you can hear here in, in, in the story that they traveled with a big group.
- 4:07They traveled with family members, with friends, they all kind of caravanned up to Jerusalem and then they went back together.
- 4:14Well, they probably saw Jesus hanging with his 12 year old buddies, his friends, and they're like, okay, sweet, that's fine, you can travel with them.
- 4:22We'll be up here with the moms and dads and chatting with our friends.
- 4:25And they get to their first camp and they're like, where's Jesus?
- 4:29Wait, he's not with you?
- 4:31Yeah, I've had that happen to a friend.
- 4:36Oh, did you?
- 4:37Where?
- 4:37She was like, where is he?
- 4:39And he's like, I thought you had her.
- 4:41And he's, she's like, no, I thought you had him.
- 4:43I thought you had him and nobody had him.
- 4:47Yeah, so it's not as, as hard to imagine in a scenario like that as you might imagine.
- 4:57Right.
- 4:58And so this is interesting.
- 5:00So here we have a story where there's like a perfect setup for Jesus to have some alone time.
- 5:07We know he spent it in the temple and we'll get to those verses in a minute.
- 5:11But to kind of stretch his wings for the first time and, and really step into his role as the Son of God and knowing answers and all that stuff.
- 5:23We'll get to that.
- 5:24But I thought I'd pause here and just say thoughts.
- 5:28Amy, on these verses leading into the meat of the story, do you have anything you wanted to share?
- 5:34All I just keep thinking about is Mary and what she must have been going through in her Head.
- 5:40Like, how did I let this happen?
- 5:43Like, how.
- 5:44Where could he possibly be?
- 5:46Like, they're just.
- 5:47And your heart starts racing.
- 5:49As a mother, I, I just, I, That's.
- 5:53Yeah.
- 5:53I just keep thinking about Mary.
- 5:55Yeah.
- 5:56And, and, and what?
- 5:58And all the insecurities.
- 5:59And whether it's the insecurity of having her son lost or the insecurity of how she caused the problem or, you know, because we do that to ourselves.
- 6:06Right.
- 6:07So just that's.
- 6:07I just keep thinking about Mary.
- 6:09Yeah.
- 6:10And I think as parents and we learn in the next verse that.
- 6:15And it came to pass that after three days, they looked for him for three days.
- 6:23Oh, my gosh.
- 6:23Like you said, as a parent.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:27You're freaking out.
- 6:28And the added burden of we have just misplaced Heavenly Father's son who's come to earth.
- 6:36I mean, he has a pretty important mission here and we have lost him.
- 6:41You know, this isn't just, you know, an average Joe child.
- 6:45This is somebody super special that angels sang at his birth and shepherds and everybody has witnessed Holy snap.
- 6:53I mean, I'm sure there are prayers going, dear God, you know where he is?
- 6:57Can you just tell us?
- 7:00Can you help?
- 7:01And what's interesting is he.
- 7:02He didn't help them find Jesus right away.
- 7:06These are Jesus's parents.
- 7:08You'd think they'd have like super divine connection straight to heaven.
- 7:12Oh, no, it was not immediate.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:16They've had dreams and visions and talk to angels and.
- 7:20Oh, my word, you know, they're good people.
- 7:23And I guess I.
- 7:24I guess one thing we can kind of glean from this is that there was a timing issue in them finding him.
- 7:32You know, hey, this just came to.
- 7:34Me out of nowhere, like.
- 7:36But think about this.
- 7:38She's got three days where she thinks her son is dead, and she's going to go through that all over again when he's 33.
- 7:50God is such a good God to prepare her for those feelings a little bit.
- 8:00Because she thinks for three days Jerusalem's not a safe place.
- 8:07She thinks for three days.
- 8:08My.
- 8:08I've.
- 8:09My son is dead.
- 8:10At least to me, for three days.
- 8:13And then he will be for three days.
- 8:17I.
- 8:17I just think that's beautiful.
- 8:19To me, I don't think there's anything coincidental about that timing.
- 8:26Wow.
- 8:27I have never seen that story.
- 8:28I've never seen that until just now.
- 8:31Wow.
- 8:31God is good, man.
- 8:32That's awesome.
- 8:33And then you, you parallel that with our own lives.
- 8:36Right.
- 8:36And.
- 8:37And we know he gives us line upon line and we know he prepares us for things.
- 8:42So things that I went through as a young mother that were.
- 8:47Seemed so huge, so huge in the last couple of years, I feel like I've walked through some of them all over again and they have been much easier because I remembered what God did for me back then.
- 9:06And, and I think that that's a beautiful thing that he does.
- 9:09That as long as we keep going to him and we keep remember he has prepared us all along the way and, and I've never, ever, ever seen that parallel until today.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:25That's awesome.
- 9:26That is so cool.
- 9:28Right?
- 9:28That's the kind of stuff that makes my heart just explode.
- 9:32Like that's awesome stuff.
- 9:34Yeah.
- 9:35So, so good and so, so beautiful to see that parallel.
- 9:39Oh, thanks for, thanks for hearing that from God today and sharing it with the rest of us.
- 9:46Well, let, let's keep pressing forward.
- 9:48It says in verse 46, and it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions.
- 10:00And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
- 10:06Holy cow.
- 10:07So after three days they find him in the temple and he is talking to and conversing with these doctors of the law.
- 10:16He's asking them questions.
- 10:18They're asking him questions, amazed at his insight and his wisdom.
- 10:22I mean he's 12.
- 10:24I don't know if you've met a 12 year old boy before, but holy cow.
- 10:29They're not, they're not usually that kind of amazing, Is that what you're saying?
- 10:34You know, I mean, obviously he was divine.
- 10:36So you know this.
- 10:38You're not even comparing apples to apples.
- 10:40You know, I'm not going to compare my 12 year old son with Jesus.
- 10:43Totally different ballpark here.
- 10:45But I think it's amazing that Even at age 12, Jesus had such amazing wisdom and insights that he had spent sounds like four days talking to these men who, who were at the temple and knew the malaw of
- 11:05Moses and him sharing wisdom and insights and perhaps they needed to hear him.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:13And, and honestly, what's almost more remarkable because he was divine, but what's really amazing to me is that somehow the Spirit could take their eyes and focus and let them see that a 12 year old does have wisdom.
- 11:36And, and honestly, I have learned so much from my children from the time they were really young that maybe it's not only about him having the wisdom, but it's also about them having the veil removed enough from their
- 11:57eyes to see that there is wisdom in the mouth of babes.
- 12:02There is wisdom in a 12 year old.
- 12:05Yeah.
- 12:05For me that's, that's because I.
- 12:08We've talked about how important it is that God can change hearts without taking away agency.
- 12:14That's the real miracle to me is that these old men who are doctors know a lot, could see that there was wisdom in this 12.
- 12:26Yeah, I agree.
- 12:28And you know what's interesting is as we were, as we were just discussing that, it made me think back a couple episodes again ago when we were talking about Simeon, there was a verse where Simeon prophesied and he
- 12:40said, behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel.
- 12:47And so I think we kind of decided that that meant he was going to shake things up a bit.
- 12:52And you can see him beginning that right here as a 12 year old.
- 12:57I'm going to shake things up a bit.
- 12:59Yeah.
- 12:59The wisdom of a 12 year old compared to these doctors of the law.
- 13:05And the folly of a 12 year old not realizing what he was doing to his family.
- 13:11Yes.
- 13:11But yet God's still able to take that and sanctify it for everyone's good.
- 13:19Yes, yes.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22And, and, and so it's interesting, we kind of blend the two together here with these next few verses that say verse 48.
- 13:33And when they saw him, these are his parents, they were amazed, right?
- 13:38They're like, what?
- 13:40He's hanging out with these people at the temple.
- 13:42And if she thought he was dead.
- 13:44Too, she would have been super surprised to see him.
- 13:46Right?
- 13:47I know.
- 13:49Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?
- 13:52Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
- 13:55So it's interesting that here, here he is having this wonderful experience, probably being blessed to talk to people who are more on his level and understanding God's doctrine than, you know, his little podunk village in Galilee.
- 14:13And so he's being filled spiritually as he's talking to them.
- 14:18But like you said, the folly of youth not realizing, oh, my parents are like, not very happy with me right now.
- 14:25I totally disappeared and they didn't know where I was.
- 14:28And, you know, probably seeing their grief and he had a tender spot for his mother.
- 14:33We know.
- 14:35And, and just realizing, oh, I have caused them grief and pain and sadness, you know, being able to sense that in his parents.
- 14:46Wow.

- 15:51We had an experience in Yellowstone one year with our teenage son.
- 15:55We were hiking to the falls.
- 15:58Can't remember their name right now.
- 15:59Starts with an M.
- 16:00Anyway, and he asked if he could go ahead.
- 16:04And we had mapped it out and it seemed like it was just a straight shot to the falls.
- 16:09Like, stay on the trail, you're fine.
- 16:10Yeah, go ahead.
- 16:11And he, he was a teen.
- 16:13He was probably 14, 15, 16, somewhere in there.
- 16:16And I, he went ahead and we came upon a fork in the road.
- 16:24And it wasn't a huge fork.
- 16:27Like, it seemed like you would have known which way to go.
- 16:30But I had a hesitation for a minute, like.
- 16:34And when we got to the falls, he wasn't there.
- 16:38And Yellowstone's a big place.
- 16:39Oh, yeah, it gets.
- 16:41And there's no service.
- 16:42And back then we didn't even have phones.
- 16:45He didn't for sure.
- 16:47And I, I didn't.
- 16:52We didn't know what to do.
- 16:54Like, we just didn't know what to do.
- 16:56And my husband said, well, he.
- 17:00I'm going to go back.
- 17:02And I gathered the other four children.
- 17:04This is our oldest.
- 17:05And so I gathered our other four children at the falls and we stood there at the falls in a circle and we just prayed that God would let us find my son.
- 17:15It was going to be dark soon, and I knew it was going to be dark soon.
- 17:18And Yellowstone's a big place and it's gnarly.
- 17:20It's cold and it's not a safe place.
- 17:23And so anyway, Blair went back to the fork in the road and he was almost to the fork in the road and Nathaniel came bounding down back the way.
- 17:36He had the wrong fork, right?
- 17:39And then by the time they got back to us, right.
- 17:42I had.
- 17:43I was getting really, like, what are we gonna do?
- 17:45Like, I was getting pretty worried anyway.
- 17:47But they got to us.
- 17:48And I was like, you got lost?
- 17:50And he's like, I wasn't lost.
- 17:53And he's still 30 years old this year.
- 17:56He still is adamant.
- 17:58I wasn't lost.
- 17:59I knew where I was.
- 18:02And that's what I mean by the folly of youth.
- 18:04Right?
- 18:05Like, what do you mean you weren't lost?
- 18:08And that, that kind of.
- 18:10That kind of almost feels like Jesus's answer.
- 18:14Like, what do you mean?
- 18:16We haven't read yet, but you know what I mean.
- 18:18Yeah, yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 18:23And.
- 18:23And, and this is Jesus's answer, verse 49.
- 18:26And he said unto them, how is it that ye sought me, wish ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
- 18:34And then.
- 18:34And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
- 18:38So they're like, what is he talking about?
- 18:43What do you mean you're about your Father's business?
- 18:45Well, it was, you know, he's divine.
- 18:47So it's his heavenly Father's business.
- 18:50Right.
- 18:50And then I love this verse.
- 18:52And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject unto them.
- 18:57But his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
- 19:01So he.
- 19:03This is a matter of timing.
- 19:06Right?
- 19:06Jesus is like, all right, I know who I am.
- 19:09I know what I'm supposed to do.
- 19:11I understand all these doctrines of the law.
- 19:14I'm having an awesome time at the temple.
- 19:17Let's.
- 19:17Let's get this show on the road.
- 19:19And gaining wisdom from this experience.
- 19:24Right.
- 19:25That I need to also bear in mind that I am still young and subject to my parents.
- 19:33I love the Word.
- 19:34Yeah.
- 19:35And was subject unto them.
- 19:39That he had to still be a child and grow up and wait for the timing to come to pass when he would fulfill his mission, which wasn't until 18 years later, you know, age 30.
- 19:54Right.
- 19:55And his ministry.
- 19:56So that's quite a weight.
- 19:58That's quite.
- 19:59It is.
- 20:00And I do.
- 20:01I really can see God teaching in both scenarios.
- 20:05Yeah.
- 20:05God teaching Mary, like we talked about a little bit, like getting her ready and preparing her and helping her know that you can survive anything.
- 20:15Right.
- 20:16You're good.
- 20:17And I honestly do not have a clue what would anybody was feeling or thinking, let alone God.
- 20:24But if I apply it to myself, I can see the one hand where Mary.
- 20:30Okay, let's say that God's preparing me.
- 20:33And then on the other hand, where God is preparing Jesus Christ and helping him be better at seeing people and being thoughtful before he just acts and, and, and how his actions affect everybody and how you don't.
- 20:51My mom always says, you don't live in a bubble.
- 20:53She used to say that when I was a teenager, you don't live in a bubble.
- 20:57Even the things you think don't affect anybody but you.
- 21:00That's not real.
- 21:02You don't live in a bubble.
- 21:04So I can see through Mary and through the Savior how the Father is constantly putting me in places to prepare me for, for more and more and more, line upon line, precept upon precept.
- 21:20Back here I wasn't strong enough to handle something that now today I'm strong enough to handle that I'm still right now not strong enough to handle something further down the road.
- 21:30And, and I can see that through their story for me and I love that.
- 21:36Yeah, I think the wisdom here that I'm seeing is that God's timing is always perfect.
- 21:47It's us figuring it out and sometimes we're in a holding pattern for a while while, while we learn.
- 21:56This feeds into the verse that we talked about last week that Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.
- 22:07This was still his time to be learning.
- 22:11He knew a whole bunch.
- 22:13We can see at this point he knew significantly more than probably any other 12 year old boy ever on this planet.
- 22:22But he still was learning.
- 22:26And so as much as he wanted to just take off on his mission right then and there and be about his father's business, he still had more wisdom to be learned.
- 22:37He had to grow up a little bit more.
- 22:40He had to increase his faith and reliance on God, submit to his parents a little bit, and also learn to relate to the people around him.
- 22:50And so I love what your mom said in there about not living in a bubble.
- 22:56I think a lot of teenagers, there's a lot of just, hey, it's just me, you know, in my head.
- 23:02And so just growing up.
- 23:03And what is it they say that our brains aren't fully developed until we're in our 20s, so that let that naturally happen.
- 23:11So you grow up, you see the world a little differently.
- 23:14There's wisdom that comes through experience and this is just one of those experiences.
- 23:19You know, we're just a fly on the wall here looking at this experience, saying, wow, Jesus had to learn and grow too, you know?
- 23:27Yeah.
- 23:28Because you really, you really do have to take into that.
- 23:31We do all have mortal bodies and, and that body and spirit have to learn to work together.
- 23:39They have to, they have to learn to grow together and become one before we can become one with those around us, have to be one in here before we can be one with Those around us.
- 23:55And I like that it talks about.
- 23:57He increased in favor with God and with man.
- 24:01Sometimes I think we get a little lopsided and we're more concerned about what man thinks than we are with what God thinks.
- 24:10Yeah.
- 24:11I think it's interesting too, this timing and this waiting and this holding pattern.
- 24:18Sometimes, oftentimes I've been like, what am I doing wrong?
- 24:23What am I.
- 24:25How do I fix this?
- 24:27What?
- 24:27And I'm.
- 24:28I'm.
- 24:28I'm pretty.
- 24:29I.
- 24:29I consider myself a pretty good soldier for God.
- 24:32I consider that if I, He.
- 24:34If I know he wants me to do something, I consider myself pretty good at going and doing it.
- 24:38And so often I'll think in my brain, wait, well, tell me what to do and I'll do it.
- 24:44What do you want me to do?
- 24:45And I'll do it.
- 24:47But being told to wait is not.
- 24:52It's not as easy as doing for me.
- 24:55Maybe other people have no problem with it.
- 24:57No.
- 24:57I think being in limbo is one of the hardest things.
- 25:01Yeah.
- 25:02Ever.
- 25:03Right.
- 25:04It's just really hard.
- 25:05And so.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:06So this morning, as I was driving, thinking and praying about things and, and pondering this holding pattern, this waiting game, this not doing, but focusing on being instead of focusing on the doing I did, I.
- 25:25I found myself saying to the Lord, okay, so what is it I need to become while I'm here in this holding pattern?
- 25:41What is it I need to become?
- 25:44What is it?
- 25:45That.
- 25:45And, and, and these, these verses that bookend this section we're talking about are.
- 25:50Are beautiful for that they are.
- 25:52The, the.
- 25:54What.
- 25:54What was Jesus becoming?
- 25:57And what was Mary becoming?
- 26:00And what was Joseph becoming?
- 26:03And, and so what.
- 26:04What is it I need to become?
- 26:05The other day I had a prompting to send a message to a child that's trying to have a.
- 26:10A child.
- 26:12Babies have babies.
- 26:13It's a.
- 26:14One of my children tried to have a baby and I felt just really clearly to tell them, God would rather you focus on being the right kind of a parent than on being a parent.
- 26:25Prepare yourself during this time when he's not granting you a child to become the kind of parent he needs you to be.
- 26:34And I think that's how it is with everything.
- 26:36While we're in the waiting, what does God want me to become while I'm in this waiting?
- 26:42And I, I got some answers yesterday about that.
- 26:46For me.
- 26:47Right?
- 26:48We can all get them as we ask.
- 26:50Oh, that is a beautiful way to think about it.
- 26:53And to lessons that we can learn is who can we become while we're waiting for God's timing to fall into place?
- 27:03I think so.
- 27:04Yeah, I think so too.
- 27:05I think those are good questions to turn to him in prayer and to ponder and, and I'm sure Jesus did too.
- 27:13You know, in Those in intermediate 18 years, he sure learned and grew a lot.
- 27:17So by the time he did step into his mission, he was ready mentally and physically, and he had a stronger connection with God and he knew to that what he.
- 27:31Even little decisions he made impacted all the lives around him.
- 27:37So there's a lot that he learned and, and same with us.
- 27:41We can learn a lot in those limbo, those holding patterns while we're waiting for God's timing unfold.
- 27:48And I think I'm thankful to know that those times have a reason, there is a purpose.
- 27:55Find it.
- 27:57And even though it's not fun to be there, right.
- 28:01Lord knows I've been in limbo so many times and it is a not very fun place to be.
- 28:07Right.
- 28:10It.
- 28:10I think those times have made me turn to him more earnestly in prayer because I'm seeking for those answers.
- 28:19Come on, I'm trying to move.
- 28:21No, no, gotta wait, gotta wait.
- 28:24You gotta wait for this, this, and this to happen.
- 28:26And you're just waiting and waiting.
- 28:29But I've learned to.
- 28:31I think I'm so desperate for an answer that I, I pull myself closer to him.
- 28:37And if that isn't helpful, I mean, that's, that's probably what he wanted all along.
- 28:43Draw near unto me and I will inspire you.
- 28:47I will help you become while you're waiting.
- 28:49Right?
- 28:50Yeah.
- 28:51And later in Jesus's ministry, we learned that he really does disappear into the wilderness and into the mountains and spends time with the Lord, with the Father, and that.
- 29:02That is not the natural man.
- 29:05That does not come naturally.
- 29:09But, but that's something we learn by the things that we go through.
- 29:16And, and, and honestly, I have really truly learned in the last, probably nine months.
- 29:23I would say that.
- 29:27If I can.
- 29:28Do nothing else in this life except be with Jesus, that's enough for him.
- 29:37I don't, I don't have to be anything else except his.
- 29:41That's all he wants from me.
- 29:44And I think that in the time that Jesus Christ was growing and learning and increasing and stuff, I think there's got to be things that he was being taught along the way that taught him that, look, you are
- 29:55mine.
- 29:56I just want you to choose to be mine.
- 29:59And I, and for me, if I am God's, that's enough for him.
- 30:05Yeah.
- 30:06Oh, I love this well, my friends, thanks for joining us on today's episode.
