- 6:47titled A Million Virgilia's First Foullentine, and it was published
- 6:53by Scholastic. It has a copyright ear of two thousand
- 6:57and nine. The author is Hermann pear. Amelia Vagilia saw
- 7:02all hearts everywhere. She spied them in the sky, spotted
- 7:06them at the park, and even found them on her
- 7:09French fries. She was surrounded by love. Mom, Where are you,
- 7:15Amelia Vagilia yelled. When she got home from school, I'm
- 7:18in the living room. Amelia Vagilia's mother was playing cards
- 7:22with her friends. Amelia Vigilia loved to play cards too.
- 7:26She picked over her mom's shoulder. Hearts, A whole handful
- 7:30of hearts. Wow, Amelia Vagilia said, Look at all those
- 7:35Valentines her mother friends laughed. Amelia Vadilia said her mother,
- 7:40don't tell them when I'm holding You're holding cards, Mom, said,
- 7:44Amelia Vigilia. Anyone can see that. Amelia Vadilia's mother handed
- 7:50her a brand new jack of cards. Here a present
- 7:53for you, now, skadetto your snack is in the kitchen.
- 7:58Cupcake Amelia Badia couldn't find any cupcakes in the kitchen,
- 8:04just a plate the brownies. She grabbed one and sat
- 8:07down at the table. She put her new deck of
- 8:09cards in her knapsack. She liked them, but she didn't
- 8:13really need them. She already had a bunch of cards
- 8:16to finish before the Valentine's Day party at her school tomorrow.
- 8:21Amelia Vadilia's teacher, Miss Edwards, had made cards for everyone
- 8:25to decorate it home. Amelia Vadilia got right to work.
- 8:29Many of the cards confused her, so she did her
- 8:32best to fix them. She put a bandage across the
- 8:36broken heart, tossed penuts into the envelope with the squirrel,
- 8:41warmed a card up the figure too cool, gave the
- 8:47seal a kiss, and was about to drizzle honey on
- 8:50a bee when her father came in through the back door.
- 8:55Hey daddy, she said, did you know that tomorrow is
- 8:59Valentine's Amelia Viagilia's father kissed her on top of her head.
- 9:04So your mother has reminded me every day this week,
- 9:07he said, with a chuckle. Tell me something I don't know.
- 9:11Amelia Vadilia thought for a second and then said, Teddy
- 9:14lost a tooth at recess. Her dad smiled, Teddy is lucky,
- 9:19he said. Who'll get a visit from the tooth fairy
- 9:21tonight and a visit from Cupid tomorrow. Who is Cupid?
- 9:26Asked Amelia Vadilia. Cupid is the little baby with wings,
- 9:30said Amelia Vadilia's father. He flies around on Valentine's Day
- 9:35and shoots arrows at people when they least expect it.
- 9:39If his arrow hits you, then you'll fall in love
- 9:42with the next person you see what, yelled Amelia Vigilia.
- 9:46Don't tease me, daddy. Babies don't have wings. It's a myth,
- 9:51not a joke, said Amelia Vadilia's father. Now, what should
- 9:54I get for mom? Candy, flowers, jewelry. Yes, at Amelia
- 10:00Viadilia's mother, Ah, like all of the above a million.
- 10:05Vigilia looked up. All she saw above was the light
- 10:09on the ceiling. Why would her mother want want that
- 10:13for Valentine's Day. That night, Amelia Vidilia had the most
- 10:18amazing dream. Cupea's hearts and candy kisses swirled around her.
- 10:23I'm nuts for you, squeaked a giant chocolate squirrel fuzzy
- 10:28sugar bee floated through the air. When Amelia Vadilia woke
- 10:32up the next morning, she was still a little bit
- 10:35sleepy as she was late, and she was late. She
- 10:40jumped into her close, wooked down her breakfast, blew her
- 10:43parents of kiss and raced for the bus quick as
- 10:46a whistle. Come on, slow poke, the bus driver called,
- 10:50you're holding us up. That's impossible. Amelia Vidilia said, I'm
- 10:55not strong enough. She climbed on board and took the
- 10:58special Valentine Steak cards under her seats so they wouldn't
- 11:03get crunched. The Valentine's state party started right after lunch.
- 11:07There were decorations and games and tons of treats. There
- 11:11was a giant cake baked in the shape of a heart,
- 11:14and an enormous bowl of fizzy pink punch. Can I
- 11:19have a little punch? Please? Ask play? Amelia Vadilia gave
- 11:23him a little punch on his arm ow yellow clay.
- 11:27The other kids laughed. Amelia Badilia did not. She was
- 11:31too busy keeping an eye out for Cupid and Tis Arrow.
- 11:36At last, it was time to exchange Valentine's Stay cards.
- 11:40That's when Amelia Vidilia remember what she had forgotten. Her
- 11:44cards were still on the bus. Amelia Badilia was miserable.
- 11:49A million Badillia, You're wearing your heart on your sleeve,
- 11:52said Missus Edwards. What's the trouble. Amelia Viadilia looked at
- 11:57both of her sleeves. She saw stripes, but not hearts.
- 12:01I don't have cards for my friends, she said, I
- 12:04left them on the bus. She put her head down
- 12:07on her desk. She started to cry. The whole class
- 12:11gathered around Amelia Vadilia. Here's what we'll do to make
- 12:15everyone feel better, said miss Edwards, patting Amelia Vigilia on
- 12:20the shoulder. Let's get busy, everyone, Please pick an activity.
- 12:24You can make your own heart box plate, pin the
- 12:27heart on the skeleton, or I can show you a
- 12:29card game called Hearts. I have an idea, shouted Amelia Vigilia.
- 12:35She looked at miss Edwards and smiled. She wiped her eyes.
- 12:39She opened the deck of cards her mother had given her.
- 12:42She took out her markers. It's okay, announced Amelia Vidilia.
- 12:47A few minutes later, I've got Valentine's for everyone. Later
- 12:53that afternoon, Abilia Vadilia found her Valentine's on the bus,
- 12:57right where she had forgotten them. She was thrilled. She
- 13:01leaped off the bus and zoomed down the sidewalk. She
- 13:04held the hard box she made at the party up
- 13:06to the sky and twirled around and around and around.
- 13:11Funk Bull's Eye yelled a boy if he jumped out
- 13:15of the bushes. The boy was Jeremy and he lived
- 13:19on her street. She known him since she was a baby.
- 13:23I'm not a bull, Jeremy, she said, And this is
- 13:26not a nye. You could have broken my heart. I
- 13:31don't want to break your heart, Amelia Vigilia said, Jeremy,
- 13:34Amelia Vigilia didn't believe him. Cross my heart, he said,
- 13:38as he really crossed. It was school fun today. My
- 13:42mom made me stay home because I was sick this morning.
- 13:45You miss Valentine's Day, asked Amelia Vigilia. Now she felt
- 13:50sorry for Jeremy, so sorry that she decided to give
- 13:53him all of her special cards here. Happy Valentine's Day,
- 13:57she said, thanks, he said. Walking away, he turned and
- 14:02blew her a kiss. A million Vidillion made a face.
- 14:06She sure didn't love him, but there was no reason
- 14:10not to like him. When Amelia Vadilia's father got home,
- 14:14Amelia Viadilia and her mother gave him a box of chocolates.
- 14:17He presented a bouquet of flowers to Amelia Adilia's mother
- 14:21and a bracelet to Amelia Vadillia. The bracelet sparkled and
- 14:26a tiny pink heart dangled from it. Thank you, Daddy,
- 14:30said Amelia Vadilia. Now I can wear my heart on
- 14:33my wrist instead of on my sleeve. Hug Time, shout
- 14:38Amelia Vadilia's father, Dougle hug Time shouted Amelia Vadilia's mother,
- 14:43Triple hug Time shouted Amelia Viadilia. It was the greatest
- 14:48family hug ever and a million Vigilia wished they could
- 14:52stay just like that until next Valentine stay. Her next
- 14:57book is titled The Valentine Press and it was published
- 15:02by Marshall Gavin Dish. It has a copyright year of
- 15:08two thousand and four and the author's Nancy Elizabeth Wallace.
- 15:13On February fourteenth, Missus Bloom asked, who is our calendar
- 15:17helper today? Me? Said Nina, It's Valentine's Day. She taped
- 15:23a paper heart over the fourteenth. Let's talk about Valentine's Day,
- 15:28said missus Bloom. Would anyone like to share? Valentine's Day
- 15:34is about love and friendships, said Nina, and giving each
- 15:38other cards, added Tyrone. And Candy said Lindsey. My day,
- 15:44Dad gave my mom flowers, said Vanessa. It's about saying
- 15:48and doing nice things, said Miguel. And everybody being everybody's friend. Yes,
- 15:53it's a day to be extra thoughtful in carrying a greed,
- 15:57missus Bloom. But how does celebrate reading Valentine's Day again,
- 16:01she asked. Nobody really knows. It may have started in
- 16:05ancient Rome during a festival held in February, young pit
- 16:09men picked names from and yearn in hopes of finding
- 16:13someone to marry. It may have started with someone named Valentine,
- 16:17who lived long, long ago. There are several stories about Valentine.
- 16:22One story tells how he was kind to children and
- 16:24that he sent a note to a young friend and
- 16:27signed it from your Valentine. Or it may have started
- 16:30because in the old days everyone thought the birds found
- 16:33their mates on February fourteenth. It may have started for
- 16:38all these reasons. But one thing we do know for sure.
- 16:41For hundreds of years, sweethearts have been sending each other
- 16:45notes and cards, gifts and flowers. Missus Bloom pointed to
- 16:49her heart. The heart and feelings go together. We say
- 16:52things like you're my sweetheart, My heart throbs for you.
- 16:56So what shape is a symbol of love? The class
- 16:59news the hearts, they shouted, I'm sure you know who
- 17:03this is, said missus Bloom. The class shouted Cupid, Oh no,
- 17:09not more love stuff grown day. Missus Bloom smiled. Long
- 17:15long ago people also believed that really was a cupid.
- 17:19He shot a magic go nearrow into someone's heart that
- 17:22person would fall in love. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated
- 17:27in many countries around the world. Astrid giving flowers and
- 17:32baking special cookies, Denmark pressing snowdrops and giving them as
- 17:37a gift, Italy having a feast, England singing psalms, giving fruit,
- 17:43sing sending unsigned cards, Japan giving chocolate candy, United States
- 17:50and Canada giving candy, flowers, gifts, sending cards. Knock, knock, knock.
- 17:56Someone was at the classroom door, come in, called missus Bloom.
- 18:03The Nissa's mom brought in two plates of heart shaped cookies.
- 18:07Nina's dad brought in a picture of pink lemona punch,
- 18:11and everyone gave everyone Valentines. After school, Mina and Pip
- 18:17walked home. When they got to their street, Missus Wonder
- 18:21was hobbling towards them. Happy Valentine's Day, Missus Wonder, They said,
- 18:26oh is it today? Looks like your bags are filled
- 18:29with Valentines. Nina answered, I got one from everybody in
- 18:34my class. I got one from everybody in my class too,
- 18:38said Pip. Did you get lots, missus Wonder? I used
- 18:42to when I was young? She said, well, happy Valentine's Day.
- 18:46She went into her house. Nina and Pip kept walking.
- 18:50I wonder if grown ups get Valentine's said Nina. What
- 18:53if missus Wonder didn't get any. I wonder if Madam
- 18:57Dodie got one, or if mister and missus this is
- 19:00Checker or Big Stewart. They said together, let's make Valentines
- 19:06for them, said Nina. When they got home, they talked
- 19:09Dad about their idea. That's a very thoughtful thing to do,
- 19:13he said. While you're creating Valentines, I'll be in the
- 19:16kitchen cooking something special for supper and dessert. Don't peek,
- 19:21we won't. Mina went and got her art box. It
- 19:24was filled with colored paper, a glue stick and markers,
- 19:28scissors and string, wooden, craft sticks, tape, and a pencil.
- 19:32Pip got his scissors. Can you make a Valentine, Pip
- 19:36asked Mina. Hearts are hard to cut, Mina, just do
- 19:41your best. Pip started cutting. Nina did too. She cut
- 19:46out one big happy heart and wrote on it. Then
- 19:49she cut it into puzzle pieces. A puzzle for missus Wonder,
- 19:54said Nina. She put all the puzzle pieces into a
- 19:58white envelope. Ooh la La, said Nina, have a great
- 20:03idea for Maddam Doty. She cut a large triangle. Then
- 20:07she cut two hearts for wings and cut a blue
- 20:10butterfly body. She pasted the butterfly onto the triangle. Pip
- 20:15held a triangle while Nina taped it on a skinny stick.
- 20:19Wi La a flag from Madam Doty, said Nina. Mister
- 20:24missus Checker, love playing games instead of tic tac tall,
- 20:29said Nina. Kid going, I will make them ticktock carts.
- 20:32Nina took a piece of pink paper and a piece
- 20:35of purple paper. She folded the pink paper in half
- 20:38and then half again. She cut out four pink hearts,
- 20:42then four more pink hearts. She did the same thing
- 20:45with the purple paper. Next, she measured a square and
- 20:48cut it. Then she took some more purple and pink
- 20:51paper and cut out four skinny strips to fit the square.
- 20:55Pip helped hold the paper strip straight while Nina flew
- 20:59them in. Mister and Missus Checker are going to love
- 21:03playing this game, said Nina. She put five pink hearts
- 21:06and five purple hearts and the square into a big envelope. Now,
- 21:11said Nina. Time to deliver puzzle for missus wonder flag
- 21:16from a damn dodie tic tac toe, I mean heart
- 21:19for mister and Missus Checker and for Big Stewart. Pip
- 21:23held something in his hands behind his back. These are
- 21:26not good hearts, Nina, can I see, Nina asked. Pip
- 21:32put some of his hearts on the table and stuffed
- 21:34the rest into his pocket. They are my practice hearts.
- 21:38Mina thought for a minute, that's okay, Pip. You were
- 21:41busy helping me. Do you have an idea, Mina, he asked,
- 21:47I'm thinking. She said, you have extra hearts. Mina said, Pip,
- 21:51we can make we can make a mobile, she shouted.
- 21:57Mina got two craft sticks in strength from her eyebox.
- 22:00Holding the sticks in an ax, she wound string around
- 22:03and around the middle. Next she cut four pieces of
- 22:06string the same length. She and Pip take two purple
- 22:10hearts and two pink hearts to the strings. Then Nina
- 22:14tied the strings to the ends of the stick. Now
- 22:17they had a mobile for Big Stuart. We'd better carry
- 22:21this Valentine, said Nina, so it doesn't get all tangled.
- 22:26They loaded Pip's wagon. We're the Valentine expressed, said Nina,
- 22:30delivering valence tines to missus Wander and Madame Dody and
- 22:35mister and missus Checker and Big Stewart. Have fun, said Dad,
- 22:39But hurry along, it's getting close to supper time. Happy
- 22:43Valentine's Day, missus wonder a hard shaped puzzle for you. Oh,
- 22:48how clever, how nice? Thank you. Nna and Pip. At
- 22:53the next house, Pip buzz the buzzer. Madame Dody opened
- 22:57the door and he handed her the flag. Happy Valentine's Day.
- 23:02Happy Valentine's Day to you mea niece, Madame Dodeie waved
- 23:07her flag. Mercy Bookooh, Mina claimed the bell. At the
- 23:11third house, Well look who's here, said mister Checker. Mina
- 23:15said Valentine Express, delivering a game for you and a
- 23:19pretty mobile for the missus, said mister Checker. Oh, said
- 23:25Missus Checker. I will hang in the kitchen. You are
- 23:28filling our home with hearts and love. Thank you sweet neighbors,
- 23:32but started Pip. Mina grab Pip's hand, But we'd better
- 23:37be going. At the end of the Checker's path, the
- 23:42Valentine's Express stopped Mina's side. Missus Checker loved our mobile.
- 23:47But now we don't have a Valentine for Big Stuart.
- 23:50What will we do? Mina asked Pip. I'm thinking, said Nina.
- 23:55Do you have an idea Mina. Pip asked, I'm still thinking.
- 23:59She's then she said, if only we had your heart's Pip,
- 24:05They're in my pocket, Mina. He said, they are good.
- 24:09She said, now we need to find a big twig.
- 24:13Pip found one ear tree. He brought it over to Mina.
- 24:17Mina gently pushed Pip's hearts onto the small branches. Wow,
- 24:21said Pip. I like it. The Valentine Express was making
- 24:26deliveries again. Ding Dong dong, what do we have here,
- 24:31asked Big Stewart. Come in, Mina and Pip. What a
- 24:35creative valentine? Dick Stewart put his Valentine in the vase
- 24:39on the mantle. It's perfect, he said, It's the arts
