Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: My name is Karl.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm from the Wolston Butchers. I sing and play guitar.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We have a new song. It's called Play These Games.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It's being released on Wednesday, which I think is the
- 0:28Speaker 2: twenty sixth of March. It's the first thing I think
- 0:32Speaker 2: I've done in my life that potentially I could say
- 0:35Speaker 2: it's highly anticipated.
- 0:37Speaker 3: So that's a good thing. That's a good thing. Brother,
- 0:39Speaker 3: thanks for joining us.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It's a very good thing. Thank you for having me.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Oh as so as you say, the Wolston Butchers are
- 0:45Speaker 3: releasing your new highly anticipated single and music video for
- 0:49Speaker 3: Play These Games. It's Wednesday, March or twenty six so
- 0:52Speaker 3: everyone else is anticipating. Is highly anticipated. How about you, guys,
- 0:56Speaker 3: how you feeling to set the.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Free do it?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I'm fucking nervous, hey, so like it's it's it's a
- 1:02Speaker 2: blessing and a curse.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You know, when you have a song that does really well, you.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Have to Well I suppose you don't have to follow
- 1:10Speaker 2: that up, but you know you want to. You want
- 1:13Speaker 2: you want the same response as the last one, potentially
- 1:16Speaker 2: even more so.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm so excited.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I like, I love the song, I love the clip,
- 1:21Speaker 2: really excited about what it is, but also just really nervous,
- 1:24Speaker 2: you know, about what what people are going to think.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So well, but she's a cracking, fast paced track made
- 1:32Speaker 3: that some would say, is you know, one of your
- 1:34Speaker 3: heaviest songs yet are you? Are you one of those people?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it's definitely.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I don't know if it's our heaviest song, but it's
- 1:41Speaker 2: pretty It's it's down that end of the spectrum.
- 1:44Speaker 1: One thing I love about.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The Wolston Butcher's is that we'll play something really heavy
- 1:48Speaker 2: one minute and then go into like salty pop punk
- 1:51Speaker 2: goodness the very next, you know, so we we do
- 1:55Speaker 2: swing to both ends of the spectrum and so yeah,
- 1:58Speaker 2: so this one is it's it's heavier one and it's
- 2:01Speaker 2: fun to play, so yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yeah. The music video itself too, like it's essentially just
- 2:09Speaker 3: a whole band playing live together, and normally something like
- 2:12Speaker 3: that it's going to be pretty plain and non eventful,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but somehow it actually suits the song just having to
- 2:16Speaker 3: you guys rocking out there. It's it's I don't know
- 2:18Speaker 3: how or why, but it does.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thank you.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's you know, we're not a sort of band that
- 2:24Speaker 2: can have huge concepts in our videos and so, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: this is.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Our second one that we've done as a band, and.
- 2:30Speaker 2: The first one was just a I don't want to
- 2:32Speaker 2: say playing, but it was, you know, jamming in a
- 2:33Speaker 2: white room. And then we so we kind of wanted
- 2:36Speaker 2: to have a little bit more of a conceptual idea
- 2:38Speaker 2: for this one. So we kind of went with the
- 2:41Speaker 2: idea that because we're not a heavy band, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: like we're not a metal band, we're not a hardcore band.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So I think if you were in a heavy or
- 2:49Speaker 2: a hardcore band, you wouldn't see us as a heavy band.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You'd see it's a punk band.
- 2:53Speaker 2: So we definitely didn't want to go with a dark,
- 2:56Speaker 2: brooding sort of clip to give the impression that we're
- 2:59Speaker 2: something that we're not. So we kind of had this
- 3:02Speaker 2: heavy song and we decided to make it a bright
- 3:04Speaker 2: video to sort of create this tension. We tried to
- 3:10Speaker 2: lock in you've seen the cover that's coming with the
- 3:14Speaker 2: artwork that's coming with the song. We tried to use
- 3:17Speaker 2: the same color scheme the video that we did with
- 3:20Speaker 2: the artwork to sort of tie them together, and yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 2: we did.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We worked with the guy who.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Made the video and sort of worked on some cool
- 3:28Speaker 2: angles and things like that, just to make it stand
- 3:30Speaker 2: out from the last clip a bit more. Yeah, I
- 3:33Speaker 2: really love it, but it's really hard when you're in
- 3:35Speaker 2: the band, you know, because you love everything do.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So, or if you don't, you're not going to admit
- 3:40Speaker 3: it to anyone anyway.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That's right. But you know, I'm the kind of guy and.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I'm sure you've been through something like this in your
- 3:47Speaker 2: life where you think it's the best thing in the world,
- 3:48Speaker 2: but a year later, when you look back on it,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you go, maybe not as great as I thought it was.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So I'm probably the wrong.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Person to ask, but I think it looks Yeah, I
- 3:56Speaker 2: think it looks fantastic.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Well for what it's worth, brother, I didn't hear as
- 3:59Speaker 3: a fucking It wasn't what I was expecting from you
- 4:01Speaker 3: guys at all, but it was a pleasant surprise.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Oh well, thank you, if you don't mind me asking
- 4:05Speaker 2: what were you expecting from us?
- 4:07Speaker 3: I was expecting more of the sort of pop punky
- 4:09Speaker 3: sort of stuff, you know, like just with the twenty
- 4:11Speaker 3: eight Daisy sort of type stuff like what it said
- 4:13Speaker 3: rest release. It was a bit heavier, or just thought
- 4:15Speaker 3: you meant a bit sort of bottom end of you
- 4:17Speaker 3: heavier than that, but it's actually more an up tempo,
- 4:19Speaker 3: party heavy type song.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it goes pretty heavy in the bridge, but then
- 4:24Speaker 2: and then again, I do think it's got a pretty
- 4:28Speaker 2: It's got a pretty tasteful melodic chorus, I think, which
- 4:31Speaker 2: goes back. I mean, it's got heavy vocals in there
- 4:33Speaker 2: as well, but but yeah, I think it's got a
- 4:36Speaker 2: good catchy hook as well. You've got your standard pop
- 4:40Speaker 2: punk beat at the start with a cool riff, So
- 4:43Speaker 2: I think it's got pretty The song is a bit
- 4:46Speaker 2: of a journey.
- 4:48Speaker 3: We touched on this before, Bro, but Play These Games
- 4:51Speaker 3: follows your last song Live Dead, Die Fast, which were
- 4:54Speaker 3: gangbusters for the band, made like did that success that
- 4:57Speaker 3: one put extra pressure on you going into this one
- 5:01Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So we had we have been recording with Troy Brady,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and we had done over the course of the year.
- 5:10Speaker 2: We had done six songs and we had released three
- 5:14Speaker 2: of them, so.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Four of them not necessarily I don't know if you
- 5:18Speaker 1: call them singles.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I don't even know how it works these days, but
- 5:20Speaker 2: you know, you release one song at a time, which
- 5:23Speaker 2: is how it goes, and we had just kind of
- 5:24Speaker 2: planned to keep doing that, and so when we did
- 5:29Speaker 2: Live Dead, we all just kind of said, let's just
- 5:30Speaker 2: do a video like a proper one, you know, spend
- 5:32Speaker 2: some money, put some time into it. And it went
- 5:35Speaker 2: really good, and so we were like, well, we've got
- 5:37Speaker 2: to follow that up really quickly.
- 5:39Speaker 1: But at that stage, we had one song left.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So now, to be fair, yeah, to be fair, I
- 5:45Speaker 2: think it's a very good song, and I'm very glad
- 5:48Speaker 2: that that's the one that we're releasing. But it was
- 5:50Speaker 2: very much a matter of, well, if we want to
- 5:52Speaker 2: get one out in the timeframe that we're sticking to,
- 5:55Speaker 2: we really only have the option of releasing this song, which,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, you always believe in something until your career
- 6:02Speaker 2: is writing on it and then you start to second guess,
- 6:05Speaker 2: is this the one we should? You know, I don't
- 6:07Speaker 2: want to wait too long, but I also don't want
- 6:10Speaker 2: to you know, I don't want to miss this opportunity.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So the guy that shoots out, who's done this video
- 6:17Speaker 2: and did our last video, is an old man of mine.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So fortunately he's someone that I trust implicitly. And like
- 6:23Speaker 2: I said, recording with Troy Brady is just everything that
- 6:26Speaker 2: comes out of his studio is fantastic. So it does
- 6:30Speaker 2: add a lot of pressure in answer to your question,
- 6:33Speaker 2: but I think it's a I think we've got the
- 6:35Speaker 2: right thing for what we need.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Oh now, I don't expect you to have a definitive
- 6:40Speaker 3: answer to this next one, because if you did, you'd
- 6:42Speaker 3: rule the world musically, bro. But why do you think
- 6:45Speaker 3: people connected so well with Livedad? Like what was about
- 6:48Speaker 3: that song with people suddenly jumped on board when we
- 6:50Speaker 3: fucking love these guys?
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it really just.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Comes down to it's a good, good song with a
- 6:59Speaker 2: good clip, which I know is a simple answer to that.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But when we were recording that one, that.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Song got super super changed during the recording process. The
- 7:09Speaker 2: song that we went into was almost completely different than
- 7:12Speaker 2: the song that we that we came out with, and
- 7:15Speaker 2: it was and if you look at it, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: it's got a cool riff, and then it's got verses
- 7:22Speaker 2: that aren't quite the.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Same from first to second.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's got a pre chorus that only appears once, it's
- 7:29Speaker 2: got a chorus that repeats with different chords in it.
- 7:31Speaker 2: It's a mishmash of different stuff. And I'm ashamed to
- 7:35Speaker 2: say that. I remember being in the studio and saying
- 7:38Speaker 2: it's a great song, but I just don't think it'll
- 7:40Speaker 2: make a good single. And so far, yeah, and so
- 7:44Speaker 2: far it's done better than any song I've ever released
- 7:46Speaker 2: in my entire life. So first of all, I don't
- 7:49Speaker 2: know anything about anything, so I can give you my opinion,
- 7:53Speaker 2: but I don't know if it's worth anything. But secondly,
- 7:56Speaker 2: I think it is at the end of the day,
- 7:58Speaker 2: like I think, I was looking at it knowing, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 2: a single should have this and a single should have that,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and it doesn't really have a lot of those things.
- 8:05Speaker 2: But at the same time, it is a really you know,
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't know if I can say this being it
- 8:10Speaker 2: it's my song, but I think it's a great song.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It just has it's an interesting song, it's it's performed well,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and I think that's just it. I think because it
- 8:19Speaker 2: looks good, you know, when people saw the video, they
- 8:21Speaker 2: stayed with it, and because it's got a good hooky chorus,
- 8:26Speaker 2: just people resonated with it. So yeah, I can't say
- 8:28Speaker 2: that I know exactly what it is, but I think
- 8:30Speaker 2: at the end of the day, it just comes down
- 8:32Speaker 2: to it was a good clip with a good song, so.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Run with that.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Like those two songs, indicative of the musical direction I guess,
- 8:40Speaker 3: so Wilson w again to take moving forward or they
- 8:42Speaker 3: just a bit of an experiment.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yes and no.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Like I said, one of the things I do like
- 8:48Speaker 2: about is that we're not not shy to do cover
- 8:51Speaker 2: most of the range of the punk rock spectrum, which is.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Kind of where I grew up.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So we are currently in the studio now and we're
- 8:58Speaker 2: doing four songs. One or two of the ones that
- 9:02Speaker 2: we were working on today and yesterday sound like they
- 9:05Speaker 2: could be on a Newfound Glory record. One of them
- 9:09Speaker 2: sounds like it could be on a Dead Kennedy's album,
- 9:11Speaker 2: and the other one sounds like it's like a Propagandhi
- 9:13Speaker 2: song or something like that.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't know.
- 9:17Speaker 2: We are very much getting to a stage where because
- 9:20Speaker 2: the four of us in the band at the moment,
- 9:22Speaker 2: we've been playing.
- 9:23Speaker 1: In this lineup for almost two years now.
- 9:25Speaker 2: So we are kind of really starting to solidify our sound.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And that is so I think that in a way, Yes,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I think as far as production values and interesting songwriting,
- 9:37Speaker 2: I think yeah. But don't be surprised if we put
- 9:40Speaker 2: out something that is unapologetically radio friendly pop punk, because
- 9:45Speaker 2: we are.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Not We're not too big to do that. We will
- 9:48Speaker 1: do it.
- 9:49Speaker 2: We love it, and we will do We'll do punk
- 9:53Speaker 2: rock jumps and stuff on stage and then the next
- 9:57Speaker 2: minute we'll go into a breakdown.
- 9:58Speaker 1: That's what we like. So so hard to say, yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I don't.
- 10:03Speaker 3: That's what people like about you, guys. There is your
- 10:05Speaker 3: quirky nature. Like seeing his live, these are a lot
- 10:08Speaker 3: of fun, you know, like it's it's great music, and
- 10:10Speaker 3: you take music seriously, but on stage you just you
- 10:13Speaker 3: just like the rest of us, except you can actually
- 10:15Speaker 3: play something.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, we do have a lot of fun. I
- 10:19Speaker 2: have been so Yeah. I've been playing in the band
- 10:21Speaker 2: for just over two years and Tom Arather singer guitarist,
- 10:25Speaker 2: me and him are always just looking for something fun
- 10:28Speaker 2: to do on stage, you know, Like we've got these
- 10:31Speaker 2: two really cheap guitars that we just kind of hurl
- 10:34Speaker 2: around ourselves and throw on the ground and just try
- 10:37Speaker 2: to be silly with it, you know.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So yeah, we do like to have fun. We do
- 10:41Speaker 1: like to play and it's yeah, we'll do that nice.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Well, speaking of playing live and having fun, You've got
- 10:47Speaker 3: a couple of crack and shows coming up. The first
- 10:49Speaker 3: of Riches with Bodies are at Norton's Music Factory on
- 10:52Speaker 3: April the twelfth. Yeah, that one should be off.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It's chess, dude, it's gonna be great.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Hey.
- 10:57Speaker 2: We we got to play with Body Jar. It was
- 10:59Speaker 2: my first time playing with Body Jar in November of
- 11:02Speaker 2: last year. And you know, having played punk rock for
- 11:06Speaker 2: so long, I've seen Body Jar that many times and
- 11:09Speaker 2: have been around them that many times, and how to
- 11:11Speaker 2: be able to play with them, it's just they're such
- 11:14Speaker 2: a cool band. They've still got it after all this time.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And yeah, this gig on the twelfth is going to
- 11:19Speaker 2: be like a minifest So Norton's in Caloundra is a
- 11:23Speaker 2: fantastic thing.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Good, yeah, beautiful, you know you can. It's got that
- 11:29Speaker 1: cool little bier garden at the side. It looks cool.
- 11:32Speaker 1: You know. You can shut those doors and you can have.
- 11:33Speaker 2: A small crowd or a big crowd and it looks
- 11:36Speaker 2: great either way. So yeah, really looking forward to that one.
- 11:39Speaker 1: That's going to be great.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And then yeah after that, friends are right, Yeah, your
- 11:43Speaker 3: friends are on being Lane, being Jane Lane. There's a
- 11:46Speaker 3: beast machine heaps others at the weaver Long Festival in
- 11:49Speaker 3: Redcliffe on the twenty eight like another Cracker. It's good
- 11:53Speaker 3: to see redclif some music like that.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't actually played in Redcliffe before. It'll be
- 11:58Speaker 2: a first for me, so looking forward to that. But yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I've seen the Way We Belong festival before and that's that's.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Going to be a super cool one as well.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I'm going to put you on the spoty mate, who
- 12:08Speaker 3: you're looking forward more to playing with? Friendzl or body car?
- 12:11Speaker 1: Oh, don't make me say that if what I was listening.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm going to tell ye.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I look A Man Who Is Not a Camel was
- 12:24Speaker 2: a very important album to me, very important album to me,
- 12:28Speaker 2: So I think you could even with it, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 2: even with No Touch Red, which is also a fantastic album.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be friends all for me, love friends.
- 12:37Speaker 3: All, no argument for me and my friend, but fuck
- 12:39Speaker 3: friends on the funck Body Jar because of Wilston Butchers

- 12:53Speaker 2: on Spotify, and all of us have the usual.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Usual socials you can find us there. You can find

- 13:03Speaker 2: I'm only on Facebook, which is very boring and very lame.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I'm aware of that, but I try to keep my
- 13:09Speaker 2: socials to one at a time, so you can find
- 13:12Speaker 2: me on there. But yeah, Wolston Butcher's we're on all

- 14:46Speaker 4: Say they just have a fall a flight So I
- 14:49Speaker 4: lost pressole a saw so above the crack, hollering me
- 14:54Speaker 4: away about where down these voices in my head and
