- 0:00Speaker 1: He is not joining us on the Ramos Law hotline.
- 0:02Speaker 2: He is joining us here at Broncos camp and all
- 0:05Speaker 2: training camp coverage and Altitude Sports Radio is powered by
- 0:08Speaker 2: Ramos Law, the official injury law firm partner of Broncos Country,
- 0:12Speaker 2: and it is our man. Jeff Legwall to ESPN, Leggy.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Was that does that cover Bruce Egos?
- 0:18Speaker 4: Yes?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Yes he can, Yes, certainly does. I'm ready.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I won't as much as Vick wants to talk to
- 0:25Speaker 2: you about Taylor Swift on the New Heights podcast yesterday,
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well spare you, I'll spare you.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I want to start with this first and foremost.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Fix a man in tune with the youth, Well America?
- 0:38Speaker 1: He does, He does allege that. Well, if you're not,
- 0:40Speaker 1: if you're not covering every demographic, you're not covering anything,
- 0:43Speaker 1: You're doing it wrong.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, we just happened to play the audio and you
- 0:46Speaker 2: walked out in my dis direction and came back that direction.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Because I got invited into cafeteria by somebody from the Broncos.
- 0:51Speaker 3: So excuse me.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Why, sir.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I certainly would like to have something in front of
- 0:57Speaker 4: me here.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm very important, no muffing.
- 0:59Speaker 4: You gonna get a muffin in your pocket. You don't
- 1:01Speaker 4: have that, uh that uh that pocket pancake.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Leggy Patzertan was on Kay Adams Show a couple of
- 1:08Speaker 2: days ago when she was at camp Yep. He said
- 1:10Speaker 2: he thinks this defense can be like historic.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Do you see that?
- 1:16Speaker 3: I mean they're they're talented enough. I what I tell
- 1:20Speaker 3: people is the best offenses, Uh in football essentially ask
- 1:28Speaker 3: the toughest questions of defenses, and the best defenses have
- 1:33Speaker 3: the best answers. Okay, and they have a lot of answers. Like,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you want to play big, they can play big and
- 1:39Speaker 3: maintain their speed. You want to play small and spread
- 1:42Speaker 3: it out. They got more corners. I mean Abrams Strain
- 1:45Speaker 3: is a fifth corner on this team, and uh, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: I've talked to GMS pro personnel guys. He's a twur
- 1:52Speaker 3: of three on half the teams in the league. I
- 1:55Speaker 3: mean that's where they're at now. Defensively, you know, when
- 1:58Speaker 3: you're always people get at me because I never dive
- 2:01Speaker 3: into the historical pond before things have happened. But I've
- 2:05Speaker 3: just seen injuries in the NFL in my years of
- 2:09Speaker 3: doing this. Take something really good and bump it way down,
- 2:14Speaker 3: you know, but you know it's one practice and everything,
- 2:18Speaker 3: but they go to the joint practice in San Francisco.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Brandon Jones doesn't practice, green Law doesn't practice, Singleton doesn't practice.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And they absolutely dominated every single period except one period
- 2:35Speaker 3: at the end. I would say the forty nine ers
- 2:38Speaker 3: tied that period and they I mean, it was just
- 2:41Speaker 3: ridiculous at one point. I think at one point I
- 2:44Speaker 3: counted seven consecutive plays without a positive gain for the
- 2:48Speaker 3: forty nine ers.
- 2:49Speaker 1: That starts up front. Then that tells me that upfront.
- 2:53Speaker 3: And they can rotate, they can rote. I mean, honestly,
- 2:55Speaker 3: they're the decisions they're making, especially on defense this year.
- 3:00Speaker 3: They will be releasing players who can play for other
- 3:05Speaker 3: people right away, Like that last defensive line spot. You're
- 3:11Speaker 3: probably talking Jordan Jackson who's played in games, and Jasaque
- 3:17Speaker 3: who is a draft pick here. I mean, that's the
- 3:19Speaker 3: kind of decisions you're making at this point on defense now.
- 3:24Speaker 3: So personnel wise, and I've told people again it's just practice,
- 3:30Speaker 3: it's just August, but it's as good as any defense
- 3:35Speaker 3: I've ever seen in August in this format. So we'll
- 3:39Speaker 3: see what it turns out to be. But if three
- 3:41Speaker 3: guys get hurt the first two weeks of the season,
- 3:44Speaker 3: especially Sir Tan, you take him out of the mix
- 3:47Speaker 3: and it's a whole different thing. He's the ultimate chess piece.
- 3:50Speaker 3: The one thing they'll be able to do this year
- 3:52Speaker 3: they haven't been able to do a lot is they're
- 3:55Speaker 3: going to force people to have to take Sirtan on
- 3:58Speaker 3: because the red of the quarterback are ingrained in their
- 4:03Speaker 3: head to go to where the one on one matchups are.
- 4:06Speaker 3: It's just drilled into them all the time. So they're
- 4:09Speaker 3: going to force you to make a decision to throw
- 4:12Speaker 3: into a crowd or to throw against and most guys
- 4:15Speaker 3: are gonna pick the crowd. I mean, we saw Joe
- 4:17Speaker 3: Burrow do it. He's probably the best one of the
- 4:20Speaker 3: top three quarterbacks in the league, and all he did
- 4:22Speaker 3: was a void certain last year.
- 4:24Speaker 1: On that note, we visited with Riley Moss, who's a
- 4:28Speaker 1: skinny jeans guy like yourself, Jeff.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a skinny everything. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Do you see him that Cincinnati game obviously was not pretty.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Do you see him taking that next step?
- 4:41Speaker 3: He's the thing you get people are gonna like about
- 4:44Speaker 3: Riley Moss if they coach or whatever. Is he has
- 4:48Speaker 3: a game like that or a play like that, he
- 4:50Speaker 3: competes just as hard on the next play. He is
- 4:54Speaker 3: the ultimate corner mind memory, which is I was talking
- 4:58Speaker 3: to champag earlier this year about the Broncos corners, and
- 5:02Speaker 3: he said, that's the Beyonce Ertan's you know, rare talent
- 5:08Speaker 3: is the the competitiveness, and he traced that to sort
- 5:12Speaker 3: of VJ Vj's mentality. You know, I think sometimes people
- 5:15Speaker 3: see Vance as this mild manner, doesn't yell guy. He's
- 5:21Speaker 3: as an aggressive a defensive coordinator as I've ever seen.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I mean, he's a Wade Phillips disciple, and he preaches
- 5:28Speaker 3: the gospel of that's why they give up big plays
- 5:32Speaker 3: because he plays fans, calls games with the pedal to
- 5:36Speaker 3: the floor at all times, and he's always looking to
- 5:39Speaker 3: be aggressive play man. Sometimes when they get in trouble
- 5:43Speaker 3: on defense, it's when they go to zone because they
- 5:45Speaker 3: don't play enough of it. You know, they don't play
- 5:48Speaker 3: enough of it. He's always in those aggressive things. So
- 5:52Speaker 3: I think, you know, they've got the sort of the
- 5:55Speaker 3: chemical makeup to have a really good year defensively, and
- 5:58Speaker 3: I think everybode would be dis point and if they didn't.
- 6:01Speaker 3: But I always put the injury caveat on everything in
- 6:04Speaker 3: this league.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, because it can just change everything.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Right, Let's go to the other side of the football,
- 6:10Speaker 4: and do you think it's important for Sean Payton to
- 6:12Speaker 4: get his first team offense feeling good at all?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Or do you not worry about that.
- 6:17Speaker 4: They weren't awful against the forty nine ers, could have
- 6:20Speaker 4: been better couple silly things. Do you think that they
- 6:23Speaker 4: need any positivity or is this offense beyond that that
- 6:27Speaker 4: they don't need any pats on the back or to
- 6:29Speaker 4: sit their butts on the bench and say, you know what, Okay,
- 6:31Speaker 4: we feel good.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I don't think they're beyond anything at this point. I
- 6:35Speaker 3: think they've just been okay throughout camp. You know, in
- 6:38Speaker 3: the forty nine Ers game, he had no intention of
- 6:41Speaker 3: leaving them in for three series. I mean, that's not
- 6:44Speaker 3: his intention going into the San Francisco game. But he
- 6:48Speaker 3: left them in there because and he only took him
- 6:50Speaker 3: out after three series because you don't want to risk
- 6:54Speaker 3: it anymore after that. He didn't take him out because
- 6:56Speaker 3: he thought they had done well. So I think it
- 6:58Speaker 3: is a question. I think he'd like to see that
- 7:00Speaker 3: one quick touchdown this week and get him out. But
- 7:04Speaker 3: he'll leave him in there, I believe, until they show
- 7:07Speaker 3: a little flow, until they show some goodness. Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Well, I mean, do you think that Bonix.
- 7:11Speaker 4: I mean, even though he's full of confidence and guys
- 7:14Speaker 4: of that offense are full of confidence, do they need
- 7:17Speaker 4: to just Okay, guys, we did it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: It's a little just a little bit of a breather.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think the assumption is not very many
- 7:24Speaker 3: if any starters are playing in New Orleans because it's
- 7:27Speaker 3: such a weird you know, it's a noon kickoff down there,
- 7:32Speaker 3: so I don't think anyone thinks that's going to be
- 7:35Speaker 3: you know, where you get it done. I think today
- 7:37Speaker 3: is pretty key, you know, about what he looks at
- 7:41Speaker 3: the joint practice and then if they have a nice drive,
- 7:44Speaker 3: you know, I could see him after one drive getting
- 7:47Speaker 3: him out. You know, I think it's hard to tell
- 7:51Speaker 3: because he he is and he's publicly said it and
- 7:54Speaker 3: sort of privately that he is kind of working through
- 7:57Speaker 3: his first ever back to back joint practice weeks. You know,
- 8:02Speaker 3: I think he's trying to figure out how would I
- 8:05Speaker 3: approach this? What does it mean for snaps? And and
- 8:08Speaker 3: all the rest of it.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Early impressions on RJ. Harvey.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You know, I think like all run you know, young
- 8:17Speaker 3: running backs, they tend to look for too much open space.
- 8:22Speaker 3: They think it's like it used to be. You know,
- 8:24Speaker 3: they don't always trust the inside hole when it's really there,
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know, but they you know, what was a five
- 8:33Speaker 3: foot gap for them to run to in college is now.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I always say it's like the doors at the grocery store.
- 8:39Speaker 3: They're only going to stay open lot that long and
- 8:42Speaker 3: you've got to get through there and you've got to
- 8:43Speaker 3: trust it. And that's a big step for a back.
- 8:46Speaker 3: He's got a little too much bounce it outside stuff
- 8:50Speaker 3: going on. But that's very, very very common, and it's
- 8:54Speaker 3: I think you'll continue to see you know, Harvey on
- 8:57Speaker 3: the early downs, the traditional rundown, and then anytime it's
- 9:02Speaker 3: where there's a protection question, Dobbins will be in the game,
- 9:06Speaker 3: and then then that'll be the I think that'll be
- 9:08Speaker 3: the rotation until you know, the proverbial Hotthand.
- 9:12Speaker 1: What does obdric estimate have to do to make this?
- 9:15Speaker 3: You know, I might and it's not like a you know,
- 9:18Speaker 3: it's just one of my things. Uh, you know, I
- 9:21Speaker 3: get the numbers and everything, but I'd hate to see
- 9:25Speaker 3: the Broncos sort of give up on him too early
- 9:28Speaker 3: just because they don't have room at the moment. I think,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, but he's not. If they only keep four,
- 9:37Speaker 3: they're not practicing in the rotation where he's in the four.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I guess I would say right now, Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I don't think it's a small detail, Like I get it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It's preseason and it was Week one. He he was
- 9:47Speaker 2: the sixth running back ten of the game, right.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Watson.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Both ways, I think he's a talented player, and you know,
- 9:55Speaker 3: I think you know, but the NFL this is the
- 9:58Speaker 3: cruelty of the numbers every year. But you know that
- 10:02Speaker 3: is a player now where you could you know, would
- 10:05Speaker 3: he clear waivers? You I don't know. I ask people
- 10:08Speaker 3: every year about certain guys, and you know, I get
- 10:11Speaker 3: a lot of yeah, you know, we take a look,
- 10:13Speaker 3: but would they claim would they claim them? I don't
- 10:16Speaker 3: know that right right?
- 10:18Speaker 1: You know?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Usually I know some gms who say, you know, any
- 10:21Speaker 3: draft pick and Day one or Day two for any
- 10:25Speaker 3: team anywhere as an automatic, just to take a look
- 10:28Speaker 3: at them. You know, they all understand you were you
- 10:31Speaker 3: were released for a reason, so they know they're maybe
- 10:35Speaker 3: they're not getting the player they scout it. Yeah, but
- 10:39Speaker 3: a lot of gms will just say if you were
- 10:40Speaker 3: a Day one or a Day two pick, or an
- 10:42Speaker 3: early Day three, they'll take a shot on it on
- 10:45Speaker 3: a claim.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Just quickly. Here we got a couple of minutes.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Who do you think are the outside of Courtland Sutton
- 10:53Speaker 2: the next two base right now highest reception leaders on
- 10:57Speaker 2: the team.
- 10:59Speaker 3: It's hard for me to leave Ingram won't get enough
- 11:01Speaker 3: targets for the opportunity. And then because last year.
- 11:06Speaker 1: The second was vele as far as whiteouts.
- 11:08Speaker 3: As far as whiteouts, I mean Willie Javante was that
- 11:13Speaker 3: had fifty he was the number two right catches. But yeah, no,
- 11:16Speaker 3: I could see Ingram being number two in targets. And
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, I don't know. Mims is my wild card.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I think I think they'd like to get him involved
- 11:25Speaker 3: in his rotations. Again, I can't practice. You know, people
- 11:31Speaker 3: always wonder what the hell I'm doing. But you look
- 11:33Speaker 3: at look at groupings because that's their intention. Yeah, you know,
- 11:38Speaker 3: look at the walkthroughs that are when you're in the bleachers.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Those are the most boring parts of practice. But those
- 11:44Speaker 3: are really probably the only parts where you're getting real
- 11:47Speaker 3: information about what they're doing.
- 11:50Speaker 1: There.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I think so, But you know, I think I think
- 11:54Speaker 3: his snaps are so concentrated to a certain grouping of plays.
- 12:00Speaker 3: You know that they want him to be that big
- 12:02Speaker 3: hit guy. Uh and I you know, they say it's different,
- 12:07Speaker 3: but they've kind of lined up like it is the same.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But you know, MEM's and Franklin were at the same
- 12:12Speaker 3: position last year in the in the schematic draw up.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So until they separate those two, they're gonna be button
- 12:19Speaker 3: heads for for snaps and targets.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Jeff LAKEWOLDESPN dot com joins us every single week. We'll
- 12:25Speaker 1: get you out early. Get it.
- 12:26Speaker 3: It looks like you know you said long extended segment.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I sit down and get the hell this is the.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Last one, dude, you want to you want to stick
- 12:33Speaker 1: around for.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Your last day out here?
- 12:36Speaker 1: You can stick around. We're not taking to kick you.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'll thought you had somewhere to go.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Everybody's nine fifteen.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Oh, we have plenty of time. Everybody's sad. Leg walds
- 12:44Speaker 1: leg Wald's not sad? Is it? Are you sad that
- 12:47Speaker 1: this is the last day that you can do this?
- 12:48Speaker 1: Or can you do this movie.
- 12:50Speaker 3: We'll have more moving forward. Oh okay, the you know
- 12:53Speaker 3: the slugs of the beat writers.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, like, he doesn't leave this place. What he's talking about,
- 12:57Speaker 1: He's always here.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I turn the lights out, Jeff.
- 13:00Speaker 1: La I gotta share a quick Leggy story, holding on.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I don't like.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I noticed this yesterday. You know, Leggy is right down
- 13:11Speaker 1: the middle when it comes to covering sports.
- 13:13Speaker 3: He is.
- 13:13Speaker 1: You know, there was no such thing as siding on
- 13:17Speaker 1: one or the other. Yesterday there was a drill taking
- 13:20Speaker 1: place and somebody threw a football and it goes to
- 13:22Speaker 1: the sideline right next to the reporters, right next I
- 13:25Speaker 1: mean right next, right by Leggy's feet. So normally a
- 13:32Speaker 1: human being would pick up the ball. That's Leggy's looking
- 13:36Speaker 1: at that thing same, almost with disdain, touching that. Brandon
- 13:44Speaker 1: Cristal runs up, grabs it and tosses it back. Of course,
- 13:48Speaker 1: is well, Leggies like.
- 13:49Speaker 3: And through the end over end by the way that
- 13:52Speaker 3: thing going.
- 13:53Speaker 1: What do you think I'm gonna help you guys with
- 13:54Speaker 1: your practice.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Don't throw it at my feet, you guys, right articles
- 14:00Speaker 3: that was not in frame. You know I'm an inframe receiver. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 3: you gotta put the ball on me.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Uh, Jeff, feel free to stick around. I will okay, Well,
- 14:08Speaker 2: all right, all right more Jeff last, yes, next, all
- 14:12Speaker 2: right back here at Broncos Park, Training Camp, Covers and
- 14:14Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio is powered by Rama's Law, the official
- 14:17Speaker 2: injury law from partner at Broncos Country.
- 14:18Speaker 1: One more segment with Jeff.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Leg Walk Whether you want it or not.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I was giving parenting advice. Oh really, yes he was.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Oh what kind of advice?
- 14:29Speaker 3: Nothing good?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, wait till you have to pay college already?
- 14:33Speaker 2: Talking about my patients is just it's tested every day
- 14:36Speaker 2: every day.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Did you hear, Jeff? The college tuition at USC this year,
- 14:40Speaker 1: room and board and tuition, right, because they always try to, oh,
- 14:43Speaker 1: it's just tuition, then they forget the room to Yeah. No,
- 14:46Speaker 1: take a guess with the numbers.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I can't hear this.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Ninety two five.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I just finished two solids ninety five nothing shock
- 14:54Speaker 3: my friend's kids going there?
- 14:56Speaker 1: Ninety two five.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Well, I just went to the grocery store and I
- 14:59Speaker 3: got basket of food that was one O eight. So
- 15:02Speaker 3: I just I can understand, don't eat.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You can tell you can take care of that.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Wait, I have a very important question We were just talking
- 15:09Speaker 2: about how you were a you're a very stoic man.
- 15:11Speaker 2: You're not going to pick up that ball that falls
- 15:13Speaker 2: by your.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Phone since you know journalistically stoic most of the other time.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I'm so I need, I need to ask something because
- 15:20Speaker 2: you cover sports, and I know it's probably different for
- 15:22Speaker 2: somebody's been covering sports as long as you have. But
- 15:25Speaker 2: can you give me the last time a sporting event
- 15:28Speaker 2: made you fist pump?
- 15:30Speaker 3: Uh? You know that's a good one. My uh, my
- 15:33Speaker 3: kids are always saying, like Rob you Yeah, it comes
- 15:36Speaker 3: to in the World Series. Pretty big deal for me
- 15:38Speaker 3: because you know we used to go to games when
- 15:40Speaker 3: I was like two.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Right, that's an easy one because you know why.
- 15:43Speaker 3: It was my dad, your parents. My dad was born
- 15:47Speaker 3: and died and they never won the World Series.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Hey, I'm getting worried about Papa Cana.
- 15:55Speaker 3: I gotta make that happen something.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Hold on, man, Troy, you need to.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Get the message. Dan Campbell didn't go.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Yeah, t Willie, if you're listening, all right, listen, cut
- 16:07Speaker 4: down on the course lights a little bit.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Okay, get there. I'm dead serious.
- 16:14Speaker 1: We went and played last year. We played it sanctuary.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I got him out there, and you guys know at Sanctuary,
- 16:19Speaker 2: some of those greens you gotta walk up a mountain deeper.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Absolutely, I walked a pace behind my dad with a handout.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, you're gonna make it, buddy, keep going,
- 16:28Speaker 1: You're gonna make it.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Remember how much fun we're.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Having exactly right? Yeah, Hey, Jeff, back to the Broncos
- 16:34Speaker 1: offense a little bit here.
- 16:36Speaker 4: How I've never asked you this question, and I hope
- 16:38Speaker 4: you know the answer, because I have no clue. How
- 16:41Speaker 4: big is Sean Payton's playbook. It's pretty big, okay, I've seen.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I have friends who have given me two of the
- 16:48Speaker 3: New Orleans Saints playbooks to sort of Study's pretty pretty
- 16:53Speaker 3: all you miss. He also has long play calls, much
- 16:55Speaker 3: like Mike Shanahan did. Gary Kubiak. A lot of people
- 16:59Speaker 3: have gone to one word cadence colors. You know, you
- 17:04Speaker 3: know what used to be eighteen word play calls are
- 17:06Speaker 3: now one word for a lot of teams. Okay, so
- 17:09Speaker 3: he's sort of they're a little shorter now than they
- 17:12Speaker 3: would have been, but so he sort of combined it
- 17:16Speaker 3: a little bit. It's pretty I mean, just look at
- 17:18Speaker 3: the play sheet on game day. That's bigger than most
- 17:22Speaker 3: as well.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Does it take a special person to be able to
- 17:26Speaker 4: run that or special players or is it graspable you
- 17:29Speaker 4: think for everybody?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Because and the reason I say that.
- 17:31Speaker 3: For everybody, I mean I've had players telling me use
- 17:34Speaker 3: that exact quote. It ain't for everybody, Okay.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I was reading a quote quote from the late great
- 17:39Speaker 4: michae Leach, coach Leech, and he said, look, he.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Was the other he was the other side. He had
- 17:45Speaker 3: an index card.
- 17:46Speaker 1: That's exactly right. He said.
- 17:48Speaker 4: We don't try to over complicate things. He says, what
- 17:50Speaker 4: we do is we do few things, but we do
- 17:53Speaker 4: them a lot, and we do them incredibly well. So
- 17:56Speaker 4: I'm just I'm curious as to where the happy medium
- 17:59Speaker 4: is in there. Because Peyton obviously is enamored with his
- 18:03Speaker 4: own play calling in his own playbook and his ability
- 18:05Speaker 4: to do that, and he's earned that right for sure,
- 18:08Speaker 4: But what about the other side of the coin were Hey, man,
- 18:10Speaker 4: if you're talking about running the football, just have some plays,
- 18:13Speaker 4: a handful of plays to get really freaking.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Good at them. That's always the rub. I mean, it's
- 18:18Speaker 3: I think every play caller in football battles that, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 3: Battles said issue, how much is too much? I mean,
- 18:26Speaker 3: I think there was a moment last year Joe Lombardi,
- 18:28Speaker 3: the offensive coordinator, said maybe we have to look at
- 18:32Speaker 3: the volume. It was just kind of an aside, but
- 18:35Speaker 3: it was probably week four, week five, and I think
- 18:38Speaker 3: it was on their mind. So he giving a young
- 18:41Speaker 3: quarterback at that point too much stuff. But you know,
- 18:44Speaker 3: play callers like Sean are gonna have They want a
- 18:48Speaker 3: lot of choices. Now he gives the quarterbacks, he calls them,
- 18:52Speaker 3: you know, he lets them dot it as he says,
- 18:55Speaker 3: put little dots next to the plays they really like.
- 18:59Speaker 3: And he does lean to that grouping. But the playsheet
- 19:03Speaker 3: is enormous, and that the issue is it used to
- 19:06Speaker 3: happen with Manning all the time because he had like
- 19:08Speaker 3: the NASA brain is they they'd run a plane a game.
- 19:13Speaker 3: They may not have repped in practice for a month
- 19:16Speaker 3: or even since training camp, but he could function with that.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And you know, it's just who you got at quarterback.
- 19:24Speaker 3: What you're straight, Mike Leach. Some of it was schematic.
- 19:28Speaker 3: The air raid offense doesn't attack matchups, it attacks space,
- 19:33Speaker 3: so you can call plays with that in mind. So
- 19:36Speaker 3: you know, Mike Leach used to carry an index card
- 19:39Speaker 3: that was his playsheet. Interesting for the game, because you're
- 19:42Speaker 3: attacking space. You're not attacking the left corner or the
- 19:45Speaker 3: strong safety. You're attacking where the space is.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Well, he had weird splits in offensive line.
- 19:50Speaker 3: That's what I mean. They're attacking space. So any air
- 19:53Speaker 3: raid disciple is uses that mentality and they don't have
- 19:58Speaker 3: much of a sheet or anything.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Who is the biggest brain quarterback you've ever covered, is
- 20:03Speaker 1: it Manning?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Man I'll tell that if we have time, I'll tell
- 20:06Speaker 3: you a Manning story. And when I worked at the Tent,
- 20:08Speaker 3: when I covered the Titans for ten years, we had
- 20:11Speaker 3: a small staff at our paper. So every Saturday I
- 20:15Speaker 3: had to do an SEC game college game, yeah, and
- 20:18Speaker 3: then I'd have to get to the Titans game. No
- 20:20Speaker 3: matter what red eye or how long the drive was,
- 20:23Speaker 3: I had to get to the Titans game the next day.
- 20:26Speaker 3: So I did SEC games for ten years every Saturday.
- 20:29Speaker 3: So I probably did twenty twenty five of Manning's games
- 20:33Speaker 3: at Tennessee. And then when he got here in twenty twelve,
- 20:37Speaker 3: I'm talking to him off to the side and we're
- 20:38Speaker 3: kind of going through some of those old games. And everything,
- 20:42Speaker 3: and he had a game they Florida. They Florida killed him.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But Manning threw a high pass on the sideline and
- 20:48Speaker 3: Joey Kent, the receiver, went up and almost got killed
- 20:52Speaker 3: and he bit his tongue when he got tackled. Player's
- 20:55Speaker 3: blood everywhere, and it was just a you know, it
- 20:58Speaker 3: was a crazy play. And we were talking about it,
- 21:01Speaker 3: and Manning proceeded. This is in twenty twelve. That game
- 21:05Speaker 3: was probably in nineteen ninety seven, and he proceeded to
- 21:10Speaker 3: tell me the route and I called him on it
- 21:14Speaker 3: and I said, that's not you don't remember that. And
- 21:17Speaker 3: then he proceeded, and I'm taping because we're interviewing. I'm
- 21:20Speaker 3: interviewing him at the time. He proceeds to do the
- 21:23Speaker 3: whole drive and I said, there's no way you remember that,
- 21:27Speaker 3: No way. And I went back in the media room
- 21:30Speaker 3: over here and I called up the play by play
- 21:33Speaker 3: from that game, and I'll be damned if he didn't
- 21:35Speaker 3: hit every single play of that drive down in distance
- 21:41Speaker 3: yardage on the plate.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I can't remember the last time I went to the bathroom.
- 21:44Speaker 3: But his joke was always that I can remember that,
- 21:48Speaker 3: but I can't remember to close the garage door.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You know, how do you guys have that?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Though Lebron can do that stuff, he can recall again
- 21:55Speaker 2: ten years ago and just do an entire like second quarter,
- 21:58Speaker 2: this is what happened.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I've sat with Cirtan and he's he's told me like
- 22:03Speaker 3: eight weeks before it. Yeah, you know they ran this
- 22:06Speaker 3: this bunch on the right, and you know, the inside guy,
- 22:09Speaker 3: I was just like, you know, I go back and
- 22:11Speaker 3: I look at it on the video and.
- 22:12Speaker 1: It's like, you know, it's exactly right certain athletes. I'm
- 22:15Speaker 1: telling you, Jamal Murray, if you ask Jamal Murray, Okay,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Western Conference Finals, Game two, Lakers, this play, He'll remember
- 22:21Speaker 1: every sequence of that play.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I'll tell you another man crazy brain story is Dungee
- 22:26Speaker 3: told me this story the Hall of Fame meeting went here.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Dungee said, He's in a team meeting and he's talking
- 22:31Speaker 3: about something and Manning has always had the spiral notebook
- 22:34Speaker 3: he would take notes in, and his locker he had
- 22:36Speaker 3: like four hundred spiral notebooks piled up, and he's taking
- 22:41Speaker 3: notes in the front and Dungee's talking and he says,
- 22:43Speaker 3: Manning's making this face like you know, like just this
- 22:48Speaker 3: hurt dunk guy, you know, disgusted just looking at him,
- 22:52Speaker 3: and Dungee thinks, I'm not talking about anything that that's
- 22:55Speaker 3: that big a deal right now. So they get done
- 22:58Speaker 3: at the meeting and Dungee's in his office, he says.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Manning comes down the home, knocks on the door. You know, hey, coach,
- 23:02Speaker 3: you got a minute, and he walks in with another
- 23:05Speaker 3: spiral notebook and says, you know, five years ago you
- 23:09Speaker 3: said this when you were talking about that, and it
- 23:13Speaker 3: today wasn't the same. Why why do we change? Don't
- 23:16Speaker 3: you was like, I don't even remember saying it. And
- 23:20Speaker 3: he said, let's just go with what you want, and
- 23:23Speaker 3: that's what they did. But wow, now Manning had that's
- 23:26Speaker 3: I've covered tons of guys in forty seasons and that
- 23:29Speaker 3: brain is They should put that thing in.
- 23:31Speaker 1: The ston It's amazing. But at some point you have
- 23:35Speaker 1: such a wide grasp of the offense, sometimes you're only
- 23:39Speaker 1: as good as your worst guy.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, now you got to get all eleven.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so sometimes that could be hard because you're hard
- 23:46Speaker 1: to play with many, yeah, he says.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Sometimes, and Gae has told me this too. Adam Gasee
- 23:51Speaker 3: has told me sometimes Manning would just see a matchup
- 23:55Speaker 3: and call a play. They hadn't reps since August, it'd
- 23:57Speaker 3: be November or whatever, and it would be a play
- 24:01Speaker 3: they repped in camp maybe three times.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Do you see any of that big brain and Bonix.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I like, he's got that same spatial thinking and I
- 24:11Speaker 3: think it almost takes that kind of memory now to
- 24:15Speaker 3: play what they asks to do now. When I first
- 24:19Speaker 3: started covering the league, I first started covering the league,
- 24:23Speaker 3: defense is lined up in basically three looks three and
- 24:28Speaker 3: just played it. You know, nothing pre snapped, nobody's disguising anything,
- 24:32Speaker 3: just line up play. Now you don't get the same
- 24:37Speaker 3: look on consecutive snaps ever, defense are subbing every down.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I mean, what they ask quarterbacks to do now, we
- 24:46Speaker 3: all underestimate it. I would think when we decide who's
- 24:49Speaker 3: a great quarterback and why can't they just be better
- 24:53Speaker 3: and all those things. I mean, what they're asking these
- 24:55Speaker 3: guys to do is unlike much of anything awesome sports.
