- 0:59Speaker 1: thing since forgotten dry cleaning. I think we all know
- 1:03Speaker 1: the joy of discovering a five, ten, or even twenty
- 1:07Speaker 1: dollars bill in a pants pocket. You gotta love found money. Well,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I had a similar experience this week with clothing. I
- 1:16Speaker 1: was looking for my nicest suit for a dressy occasion,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and for the life of me couldn't find it. I
- 1:22Speaker 1: searched through every closet in the house before finally thinking
- 1:26Speaker 1: that maybe, just maybe, I took it to the dry
- 1:30Speaker 1: cleaner and forgot to pick it up. Sure enough, not
- 1:33Speaker 1: only did they have the suit, but they had several
- 1:36Speaker 1: nice dress shirts that had been sitting there since November.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It was like buying new clothes, but at a fraction
- 1:44Speaker 1: of the cost. Now let's get to my first guest.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I have something in common with Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd,
- 1:52Speaker 1: Ross Tucker, and just about anybody that hosts a podcast
- 1:55Speaker 1: or radio show about football. One of my favorite guests
- 2:00Speaker 1: is Greg Cosel from NFL Films and the ESPN Matchup Show,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and he joined me this week for an in depth
- 2:07Speaker 1: off season look at the Bengals. Greg, the last time
- 2:11Speaker 1: we talked was at the NFL Combine where you were
- 2:14Speaker 1: working on your player evaluations, and as it turns out,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you did detailed film breakdowns of all six Bengals draft picks,
- 2:22Speaker 1: plus a couple of guys that they signed as undrafted
- 2:24Speaker 1: free agents. So let's start with Shamar Stewart. You called
- 2:28Speaker 1: him one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Explain why, Yeah, because this guy is a freakish athlete.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mean, you just turn on the tape. I knew nothing.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You know, It's funny, Dan, I watch a good amount
- 2:41Speaker 2: of college football, and some guys I end up feeling like, oh,
- 2:44Speaker 2: they're very familiar to me, even though I haven't done
- 2:46Speaker 2: their tape, And other guys I don't really know a
- 2:48Speaker 2: lot about it all. And Shamar Stewart was a guy
- 2:50Speaker 2: that was almost virgin territory for me when I started
- 2:53Speaker 2: watching him. And as soon as you put the tape on,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I mean, this guy is a sudden explosive athlete. He
- 3:01Speaker 2: just jumped off the tape just watching him move. I mean,
- 3:04Speaker 2: this guy has explosive athleticism. And then you watch more
- 3:08Speaker 2: and more and you can't help it be impressed with
- 3:11Speaker 2: the athleticism. But I came away feeling that he just
- 3:15Speaker 2: needs to learn how to rush the quarterback, that he
- 3:19Speaker 2: just didn't really have a sense of how to do that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: He would just get off the ball and run into
- 3:24Speaker 2: the tackle, and every once in a while, because he's
- 3:27Speaker 2: so strong and if he had enough runway with his velocity,
- 3:31Speaker 2: speed and natural power, he could shove the tackle back
- 3:34Speaker 2: into the pocket, and of course they moved him around
- 3:37Speaker 2: as well. As you probably know. He didn't just play
- 3:38Speaker 2: on the outside. But my sense is that's what he'll be.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So I came away believing that, you know, he just
- 3:46Speaker 2: someone needs to teach him really how to rush the quarterback,
- 3:50Speaker 2: all the nuances, the details, how to use his hands,
- 3:53Speaker 2: how to playoff contact. You have to be able to
- 3:56Speaker 2: play off contact.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I've been fortunate to speak to offensive lineman from the
- 4:00Speaker 2: first thing they say offensive tackles in particular is it's
- 4:03Speaker 2: all about speed to power. If you can't beat me
- 4:06Speaker 2: with power, then I have the advantage right off the bat.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So he's got to learn. Even though he's strong and
- 4:12Speaker 2: he's explosive, he has to learn how to play off
- 4:15Speaker 2: that contact because once he creates it, he kind of stopped.
- 4:20Speaker 2: So but if he can put it all together, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: when you say that about a lot of guys, so
- 4:24Speaker 2: I'm not saying anything profound here, but if you can
- 4:27Speaker 2: put it all together, you could have a guy that's
- 4:29Speaker 2: really a dynamic player because the athletic traits are just
- 4:33Speaker 2: off the charts.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Because he only had four and a half sacks in
- 4:38Speaker 1: his career in Texas A and M. He's been referred
- 4:40Speaker 1: to by some as boom or bust. I think of
- 4:44Speaker 1: it more as boom or solid. Yeah. Do you agree
- 4:48Speaker 1: with that?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean, here's in my transition. I know you
- 4:53Speaker 2: look at my material, so you know how I do this.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You know I do strength to weaknesses transition in my transition,
- 4:58Speaker 2: which I'm sure you read that. At this point in
- 5:00Speaker 2: his development, Stewart is more of an athletic and physical
- 5:04Speaker 2: freak than a polished, refined player, and its projection and
- 5:08Speaker 2: transition to the next level will depend a great deal
- 5:10Speaker 2: in the D line coach of the team that drafts it.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And you know, so to me, that's a major thing.
- 5:16Speaker 2: You have to teach this guy. And I don't know
- 5:18Speaker 2: the kid. I'm hopeful he's receptive to being coached and
- 5:21Speaker 2: taught because you know, if he puts it all together,
- 5:25Speaker 2: like I said, you really have something.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Did Texas A and M use him in ways that
- 5:31Speaker 1: limited his production?
- 5:35Speaker 2: I mean he lined up in multiple spots along their
- 5:37Speaker 2: defensive front. I mean there were times he was reduced,
- 5:41Speaker 2: there were times he rushed versus guards, there were times
- 5:44Speaker 2: he was the one technique or zero technique. You know,
- 5:48Speaker 2: he really moved around, I think to me, and again
- 5:53Speaker 2: that doesn't mean you can't move him around. That depends
- 5:55Speaker 2: on your other personnelity and how they see it when
- 5:57Speaker 2: you get to pure pass situations. But my sense is
- 6:00Speaker 2: he's probably an edge player. You know, he had plays
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know when you watch the tape where you win, well,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you know he had he had a snap against armand
- 6:10Speaker 2: Membo last year and Membo was a was a high
- 6:13Speaker 2: pick in the first round, the Missouri right tackle where
- 6:15Speaker 2: he just physically manhandled Membo and Membo was really really strong.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And he had really some really good snaps as well
- 6:23Speaker 2: against Will Campbell from LSU. So it's there, it's in
- 6:27Speaker 2: his body. Like I said, I think he's an end.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Depending on the way their other personnel might develop, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: it could could you move him inside? You could?
- 6:36Speaker 3: Sure.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Their second round pick was linebacker Demetrius Knight out of
- 6:40Speaker 1: South Carolina. He wrote that he can be a Day
- 6:43Speaker 1: one starter, and that appears to be the plan. It
- 6:46Speaker 1: seems most likely that he is going to start for
- 6:48Speaker 1: the Bengals next to Logan Wilson. What do you like
- 6:51Speaker 1: about Knight?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I I you know again, maybe I'm old school.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Then you know, it's probably because I'm old But you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: the thing I liked about Night is this guy just
- 7:02Speaker 2: had a really well chiseled frame and he played physically.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And to me, if you're going to be a stackbacker
- 7:08Speaker 2: somewhere along the line, you have to play physically. And
- 7:11Speaker 2: I thought that he really did that well. But now
- 7:14Speaker 2: there were other elements of his game that I really
- 7:16Speaker 2: really loved. He had a quick trigger, he had an
- 7:19Speaker 2: explosive first step, he had burst in acceleration. I thought
- 7:24Speaker 2: his run defense was as good as any linebacker in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the twenty twenty five draft class. I mean, he knew
- 7:31Speaker 2: what he saw. You know, we talk about key and diagnose.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's a phrase you hear a lot for the linebackers
- 7:37Speaker 2: in particular. I thought his key and diagnose was really good.
- 7:41Speaker 2: For another trim, you hear a lot of scrape and
- 7:43Speaker 2: flow to work through traffic. I thought he was really
- 7:46Speaker 2: really good at that. And he was a better athlete
- 7:49Speaker 2: than I think some people gave him credit for. He
- 7:52Speaker 2: made a lot of plays where he in pursued, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 2: running down people. So I really liked his tape a lot.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And you know, when I saw its forty time and again,
- 8:03Speaker 2: not that that's the be all and end all. I said, Okay,
- 8:05Speaker 2: you know that that's good. He ran a four or
- 8:07Speaker 2: five eight that that's good because this kid is a
- 8:09Speaker 2: good sized kid. You've probably seen him. I mean, he's
- 8:12Speaker 2: put together. So I thought he was a classic stacked
- 8:16Speaker 2: backer and obviously that's the way he would play for
- 8:19Speaker 2: the Bengals. And as you said, it would not surprise
- 8:22Speaker 2: me for a second if he's the starter next to
- 8:24Speaker 2: Logan Wilson.
- 8:25Speaker 1: They took another linebacker in the fourth round, Barrett Carter
- 8:28Speaker 1: out of Clemson. One Bengal scout told me that he
- 8:31Speaker 1: thought he was the best coverage linebacker in the draft.
- 8:35Speaker 1: What stood out to you when you watch Barrett Carter?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's what that to me is his best
- 8:41Speaker 2: the best part of his game. I mean I thought that,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, he had the speed to carry your receivers
- 8:47Speaker 2: down the seam. He was really good. And underneath his
- 8:49Speaker 2: own coverage, he had a good feel for routes, good
- 8:52Speaker 2: feel for reading the quarterback. You know, he's a very
- 8:56Speaker 2: athletic kid. I mean he's a little bit smaller than
- 8:59Speaker 2: you'd idea only like I think, but you know, he's
- 9:02Speaker 2: probably still a stackbacker. There's no question that he had
- 9:06Speaker 2: to see it and go quick trigger mentality. I mean,
- 9:08Speaker 2: he played fast and he had a lot of range.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He's twitchy. You know, he's an interesting guy. Uh And
- 9:16Speaker 2: my guess is he's a fourth round pick because he's
- 9:19Speaker 2: not quite as big as you would like. You know,
- 9:22Speaker 2: he's six feet, he's two thirty. Yeah, he didn't his
- 9:25Speaker 2: forty times wasn't as good as Knights. That which is
- 9:27Speaker 2: really interesting because at the end of the day, he's
- 9:30Speaker 2: he's his game has to be about speed and range.
- 9:34Speaker 2: But he is a really good coverage player. It'll be
- 9:37Speaker 2: interesting to see how he acclimates to the league and
- 9:40Speaker 2: if you can play in their sub early on, or
- 9:42Speaker 2: whether he's the kind of player that almost needs, you know,
- 9:45Speaker 2: half a year or a year to kind of acclimate
- 9:47Speaker 2: to the league.
- 9:49Speaker 1: We are chatting with Greg co Sell from NFL Films
- 9:51Speaker 1: in the ESPN Matchup Show. The Bengals drafted two offensive linemen,
- 9:56Speaker 1: Dylan Fairchild in the third round Jalen Rivers in the fifth.
- 10:00Speaker 1: In reading your evaluations, I got the impression that you
- 10:04Speaker 1: were just as high on Rivers as fair Child. Is
- 10:07Speaker 1: that accurate.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I really like Jalen Rivers. You know, it's funny,
- 10:12Speaker 2: Jalen Rivers I actually watched a year ago, you know,
- 10:15Speaker 2: just I look at names in the summer. You know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: it's what I'm doing now. I'm watching some guys will
- 10:19Speaker 2: be in next year's draft. So I saw a lot
- 10:21Speaker 2: of snaps of Rivers in twenty twenty three, and then
- 10:24Speaker 2: of course I did them a lot this year. I
- 10:26Speaker 2: really liked Rivers. You know, he played both left guard
- 10:29Speaker 2: and left tackle. He's got extensive experience playing both. My senses,
- 10:35Speaker 2: you know, you tell me you're there. My senses, he'll
- 10:37Speaker 2: probably be seen as a guard. Is that the way
- 10:39Speaker 2: it's playing out.
- 10:40Speaker 1: They're starting them out at tackle.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Interesting and you know, and it's interesting you say that
- 10:45Speaker 2: because his arm length is thirty five inches and he
- 10:48Speaker 2: has a tremendous wingspan. So and he's six' five three
- 10:52Speaker 2: quarters and three nineteen so he's got everything you want
- 10:55Speaker 2: size wise for a. TACKLE i think he can be a,
- 10:59Speaker 2: tackle but you, KNOW i thought that he could be
- 11:01Speaker 2: a really good. Guard so, again we'll see how it plays.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Out but you, know there's not a lot of tackles
- 11:06Speaker 2: that come out in the draft with thirty five inch,
- 11:08Speaker 2: arms so he has what it. Takes AND i really
- 11:13Speaker 2: liked his. TAPE i saw a lot of snaps of
- 11:15Speaker 2: him over a two year, period you, know and to, Me,
- 11:18Speaker 2: dan he was just one of those guys that was
- 11:20Speaker 2: just a really solid. Player like if he plays the
- 11:24Speaker 2: same way in THE nfl that he played At, miami
- 11:27Speaker 2: he's the. Guy to, me you just line him up
- 11:29Speaker 2: and you feel. Comfortable he may not be An All,
- 11:31Speaker 2: pro he may, not you, know but you just feel,
- 11:33Speaker 2: like you know What we're. Okay rivers is out, There
- 11:36Speaker 2: he's gonna do his.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Job because of his. Versatility At, MIAMI i think they
- 11:42Speaker 1: look at him as a great candidate to be a swing,
- 11:45Speaker 1: tackle a guy that can play. Guard so at least for,
- 11:48Speaker 1: now he's been getting most of his repsit, tackle but
- 11:51Speaker 1: obviously that can change as we get closer to the.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Season as For Dylan, fairchild he's currently projected to start
- 11:58Speaker 1: at left. Guard would he be an upgrade From Cordell,
- 12:03Speaker 1: vohlson particularly in pass.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Pro.
- 12:06Speaker 2: YEAH i went back and forth on. Him there were
- 12:09Speaker 2: TIMES i thought he was. GOOD i MEAN i even
- 12:12Speaker 2: said that in my transition he was a mixed. WATCH
- 12:14Speaker 2: i thought there was some good and some not so.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Good AS i thought about his projection to the. League you,
- 12:20Speaker 2: know you watch a guy play At george, obviously and
- 12:23Speaker 2: they run the, ball you, KNOW nfl run. Game he passed,
- 12:26Speaker 2: protected so he had a lot of, snaps AND i
- 12:29Speaker 2: saw a lot of, snaps AND i thought he had
- 12:31Speaker 2: some really good snapshots both as a run blocker and pass.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Protector BUT i thought the thing that stood out to,
- 12:38Speaker 2: Me and Again i'm certainly not an a line. Coach you,
- 12:41Speaker 2: know the THING i always try to figure out WHEN
- 12:43Speaker 2: i watch olignemen AND i try to get the answer
- 12:47Speaker 2: from all line coaches as well guys AS i, know
- 12:50Speaker 2: BUT i still feel LIKE i struggle sometimes IS i
- 12:53Speaker 2: never know what AN o line coach you'll tell, me
- 12:55Speaker 2: OH i can fix that in two, weeks OR i
- 12:58Speaker 2: can't fix, that you. Know SO i SO i thought
- 13:00Speaker 2: he had balance and body control issues too often for.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Me you, Know i'm not an a, guru BUT i
- 13:07Speaker 2: think that that needs to be corrected BECAUSE i thought
- 13:09Speaker 2: that he got you, know his body over his feet too.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Often his upper. BODY i thought they were you, know
- 13:15Speaker 2: just some. Missionies and and he was a third round,
- 13:17Speaker 2: pick so that's not a throwaway. Pick a third round
- 13:20Speaker 2: pick for an offensive guard is a guy you think
- 13:22Speaker 2: is going to be a. Starter, so as you, said
- 13:24Speaker 2: they haven't penciled in that way right. NOW i did
- 13:27Speaker 2: feel that he had strong traits to develop into a,
- 13:30Speaker 2: starter and THEN i said that that whether that occurs
- 13:34Speaker 2: will be a function of coaching and. Commitment and you
- 13:36Speaker 2: know That i'm not, there SO i don't know how
- 13:39Speaker 2: all that's going to. Work AND i certainly don't Know Dylan.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Fairchild but there's a lot of there's a lot of good,
- 13:45Speaker 2: snapshots BUT i just thought the balance and body control
- 13:49Speaker 2: that needs to be cleaned.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Up.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Well as we, said he is penciled in for. Now
- 13:54Speaker 1: so a lot can change between now and the start
- 13:56Speaker 1: of the season In, cleveland but at least for, Now
- 13:59Speaker 1: Scott peters thinks that he's a guy that can start
- 14:01Speaker 1: at left. Guard The bengals final draft pick was running
- 14:04Speaker 1: Back Taj. Brooks what does he add to a running
- 14:08Speaker 1: back room that Includes Chase brown and some A Jp Ryn.
- 14:12Speaker 2: It'll be interesting because you know, WHAT i really Like Chase.
- 14:15Speaker 2: BROWN i mean you probably do, too you. KNOW i
- 14:17Speaker 2: Think Chase brown is a really good, player you, know
- 14:21Speaker 2: AND i think because you, know A burrow And chase And.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Higgins you, know you don't really think a whole lot
- 14:30Speaker 2: About Chase, brown BUT i think you would agree that
- 14:33Speaker 2: he had a really good year last, year you, know
- 14:35Speaker 2: for how he was deployed and what he was asked to.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Do you, KNOW i, mean obviously they're not using him
- 14:40Speaker 2: where they want. To they give him the, ball you,
- 14:42Speaker 2: know to Be Derrick, henry you, know that's not what he.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Is but the thing About brooks and it'll be. Interesting
- 14:49Speaker 2: he's got a lot of wear and. Tear he's had
- 14:51Speaker 2: over nine hundred carries in five years in. COLLEGE i
- 14:55Speaker 2: think he's he knows how to. Run you, know he's
- 14:57Speaker 2: got good. Size he's not a, burner BUT i think
- 15:00Speaker 2: he knows how to. Run he's, patient he knows how
- 15:02Speaker 2: to press the. Hole he knows how to set up
- 15:05Speaker 2: second level, defenders which is SOMETHING i really look for with,
- 15:09Speaker 2: backs with their path because obviously the way backs are
- 15:12Speaker 2: often taught in you know, this the first two steps
- 15:16Speaker 2: backs have to they have a path that's that's dictated
- 15:18Speaker 2: by what the run. Is and then at that point
- 15:21Speaker 2: maybe maybe it's three, steps depending on the coach and
- 15:24Speaker 2: how it's. Coached but then it's, okay what happens? Next
- 15:27Speaker 2: then it's it's more what he, sees how he. REACTS
- 15:31Speaker 2: i think he can change. DIRECTION i think he showed
- 15:33Speaker 2: some jump cut. Ability you. KNOW i think he's a solid.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Back he's just he's a big. Back so the question,
- 15:41Speaker 2: is Because Chase brown is not a small back, either
- 15:43Speaker 2: is where does he fit? In you, know he's not
- 15:45Speaker 2: going to beat Out Chase, Brown so the question is
- 15:48Speaker 2: is does he get some snaps in place Of Chase
- 15:51Speaker 2: brown because he's certainly not going to be your third down.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Back that's P, Ryan, yeah that's P.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Ryan.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Yep The bengals did not draft defensive, tackle but they
- 16:02Speaker 1: signed to as undrafted free. Agents that you did detailed
- 16:06Speaker 1: evaluations Of Eric gregory out Of arkansas And Howard cross
- 16:10Speaker 1: out Of Notre. Dame described those two.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Guys, Yeah gregory was a GUY i kind of, liked
- 16:15Speaker 2: to be honest with. YOU i, MEAN i Thought, gregory you,
- 16:19Speaker 2: know BECAUSE i watched a lot Of, arkansas BECAUSE i
- 16:22Speaker 2: watched a lot Of land And, jackson and So gregory has,
- 16:24Speaker 2: said you know, What i'm gonna watch him. Too he's
- 16:28Speaker 2: he's a run stuffer. Guy you, Know he's another one
- 16:30Speaker 2: of those guys that's a run. Stuffer that's the strength
- 16:33Speaker 2: of his. Game you, know HE'S i would say he's
- 16:37Speaker 2: and he developed into a pass rusher at times, maybe
- 16:41Speaker 2: but he's you, know he's got a desirable combination of
- 16:43Speaker 2: point of attack, strength he's got quickness to take on
- 16:46Speaker 2: and defeat double. Teams but you, know it's funny you,
- 16:49Speaker 2: mentioned you, know sort of what they. Did the player
- 16:52Speaker 2: THAT i, thought in some ways is is really. Interesting
- 16:57Speaker 2: And i'm really curious Is slayton who they, signed Because
- 17:04Speaker 2: slayton is a, really really good run defender AND i
- 17:08Speaker 2: liked him a, lot so to, me that was a
- 17:10Speaker 2: really really important signing for. Them, so you, know we
- 17:13Speaker 2: talked about this the last TIME i spoke to you
- 17:16Speaker 2: and we did this and we talked ABOUT i had
- 17:18Speaker 2: mentioned the fact THAT i thought that their d tackles
- 17:22Speaker 2: were not you, know run guys or passed or you,
- 17:24Speaker 2: know that they needed work, there and they obviously felt
- 17:26Speaker 2: the same. Way but, uh you, Know Cross cross is
- 17:31Speaker 2: a smaller. Guy i'm always a little leery of those
- 17:34Speaker 2: guys because he's not super. Explosive you, Know he's not
- 17:38Speaker 2: one of those guys that you go, wow you, Know
- 17:40Speaker 2: it's not like you're looking At Grady. Jarrett you know
- 17:43Speaker 2: those kinds of. Guys you, know some guys are just
- 17:45Speaker 2: super explosive and you live with the fact that they're.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Smaller you, Know i'm not going to compare anyone To Aaron, donald,
- 17:50Speaker 2: obviously but you, know smaller guys have to be. Explosive
- 17:54Speaker 2: AND i think the reason cross despite a really nice college,
- 17:57Speaker 2: career A Notre dame and you, know to talk going
- 18:00Speaker 2: into his last year that he'd, be you, know a
- 18:03Speaker 2: higher draftable. Player it just you, know the traits, eventually
- 18:07Speaker 2: just don't, say, hey draftaball and you know He's he's
- 18:11Speaker 2: one of those. Guys he's a long.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Shot to, me we are visiting with a Great greg Co.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Cell we now have five years OF nfl tape Of Joe.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Burrow he's got the best completion percentage IN nfl, history
- 18:24Speaker 1: nearly sixty nine. Percent his career passer rating is better
- 18:27Speaker 1: than one oh. One you've studied quarterbacks for more than forty.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Years are there areas where you already Consider Joe burrow
- 18:36Speaker 1: to be an all time?
- 18:37Speaker 2: Great all time? Great is that's that's you, know that's
- 18:42Speaker 2: a big. Term, LOOK i Love Joe. BURROW i, mean it's.
- 18:46Speaker 2: FUNNY i had my intern last year was a quarterback in.
- 18:50Speaker 2: College he's now working in the, league you, know which
- 18:52Speaker 2: is great for, Him and he was a quarterback and
- 18:55Speaker 2: we used to Talk borrow all the time because he,
- 18:57Speaker 2: was you, know a, quarterback and you just we love Talking.
- 19:00Speaker 2: BURROW i, mean there's nothing not to love when you
- 19:02Speaker 2: talk About Joe, burrow just the way he. Plays you,
- 19:05Speaker 2: Know burrow is one of those guys that when you
- 19:08Speaker 2: watch him play and you would know, this you're. There i'm,
- 19:10Speaker 2: not AND i certainly don't Know Joe, burrow but he
- 19:13Speaker 2: just seems like he's so aware of everything going, on
- 19:18Speaker 2: like it's innate to. Him it's just in HIS, dna you,
- 19:21Speaker 2: know Because i've talked to coaches over the years who
- 19:24Speaker 2: always say offensive coaches that it really takes at least
- 19:27Speaker 2: three years for a quarterback to understand all the details
- 19:32Speaker 2: of his offense and then all the details of all
- 19:35Speaker 2: the defenses he plays. AGAINST i just get the sense
- 19:39Speaker 2: Watching burrow that that's just innate to, him that he
- 19:43Speaker 2: just gets. That you, know, guys a lot of guys
- 19:46Speaker 2: never learn, that you, know they coaches teach, it but
- 19:49Speaker 2: some guys you, know in some ways you do. BASKETBALL
- 19:51Speaker 2: i know you do The university Of cincinnati. Basketball it's
- 19:54Speaker 2: like a point. Guard you, know you can sit with an,
- 19:57Speaker 2: iPad you can watch film all day. Long some guys
- 20:01Speaker 2: see the floor and some guys. Don't you can't teach
- 20:04Speaker 2: a guy to Be Jason. Kidd you, know some guys
- 20:06Speaker 2: see the, floor some guys. Don't when you agree with
- 20:08Speaker 2: that based.
- 20:09Speaker 1: On, yeah point guards, absolutely.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And a quarterback in many. Ways as a point, guard
- 20:16Speaker 2: you know is you know you call no one calls
- 20:20Speaker 2: a play with the idea of drop back and run.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Around they call a play with the idea that whether
- 20:25Speaker 2: it's three, step five, step seventh, step that you're gonna
- 20:28Speaker 2: hit that step and you're gonna be able to throw
- 20:30Speaker 2: the ball to. Someone it may not be the primary
- 20:33Speaker 2: although in an ideal world that's what you, like that's
- 20:36Speaker 2: what you, want but you're gonna throw the ball to,
- 20:38Speaker 2: someone so, you're you, know at its, core the way
- 20:41Speaker 2: the quarterback position is taught as you're a, distributor you're
- 20:44Speaker 2: not a. Playmaker the playmaker is sort of the added
- 20:47Speaker 2: element that the league kind of demands more than ever
- 20:50Speaker 2: because of the way defenses have, evolved but the way
- 20:53Speaker 2: the position is still taught is you're a distributor and.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Borrowed to, me just seems like he has such an
- 21:01Speaker 2: innate feel for where to go with the, football you,
- 21:05Speaker 2: know and and if and if the play doesn't, work
- 21:08Speaker 2: he has an immediate feel, for, Hey i'm gonna. Move
- 21:11Speaker 2: but he just. Knows AND i don't know if you
- 21:14Speaker 2: CAN i, mean obviously he's, coached you, know BUT i
- 21:17Speaker 2: don't know if you can coach that kind of a
- 21:19Speaker 2: vision and. Clarity he just plays the game with so much,
- 21:23Speaker 2: clarity would you, AGREE.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I, mean pre, snap post, snap middle of the, play
- 21:28Speaker 1: all of. It that the spatial. Awarenessess, yeah it's. Uncanny you.
- 21:35Speaker 2: KNOW i have this conversation With Kurt warner so many.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Times Kurt warner is not a big fan of pure,
- 21:40Speaker 2: progression Which i'll give a one sense explanation and that
- 21:44Speaker 2: it's very. Simple it's the way it's taught, now beginning
- 21:47Speaker 2: at a young age with quarterbacks is they're basically taught
- 21:50Speaker 2: that here's the route. Concept you throw it to the
- 21:52Speaker 2: to the. Primary if he's not, open you throw it
- 21:54Speaker 2: to the next. Guy if he's not, open you throw
- 21:57Speaker 2: it to the next. Guy the defense doesn't. Matter AND
- 22:00Speaker 2: i think that's fine all through. COLLEGE i don't think
- 22:03Speaker 2: that's fine in THE. Nfl And kurt AND i talk
- 22:06Speaker 2: about this all the time because he can't stand. That he,
- 22:08Speaker 2: says how can you play quarterback in THE nfl without
- 22:11Speaker 2: truly understanding what the defense? Is and you, know my
- 22:14Speaker 2: guess Is burrow really knows defenses that are really really
- 22:17Speaker 2: high level and in his study for any given, opponent
- 22:20Speaker 2: that he really understands what he's facing that given week
- 22:24Speaker 2: and how it impacts how he has to. Play but
- 22:27Speaker 2: he's just you, know he's such a fun. WATCH i,
- 22:30Speaker 2: mean you, know LIKE i, said, YEAH i love Watching Josh.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Allen who does? It you, KNOW i, mean come, on
- 22:36Speaker 2: but you, know just the Way burrow and by the
- 22:38Speaker 2: Way alan has gotten so much better in that, regard
- 22:40Speaker 2: by the WAY i Think Joe brady's done a great
- 22:42Speaker 2: job with.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Him but.
- 22:45Speaker 2: You, KNOW i just you, know the plays that no
- 22:47Speaker 2: one ever sees as a, highlight but WHICH i see
- 22:49Speaker 2: Because i've been Watching tate now for more than thirty,
- 22:51Speaker 2: years you, know and the plays that are so important in.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Games and you know, This dan is when it's third and,
- 22:56Speaker 2: seven you complete a ball for nine. Yards those are
- 22:59Speaker 2: the plays that you, Know Troy aikman was a master
- 23:02Speaker 2: at that with Jovichik those are never plays you see
- 23:05Speaker 2: on a highlight because they don't seem like they're, important
- 23:08Speaker 2: but they're really. Important you. Know those are the plays
- 23:11Speaker 2: that matter in.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Games And Joe burrow has executed those plays as well
- 23:15Speaker 1: as anybody in the league during HIS nfl. Career let's
- 23:19Speaker 1: talk about the guy that he throws to most, Frequently Jamar.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Chase coming off incredible year where he led THE nfl
- 23:25Speaker 1: and catches yards and. Touchdowns how does he get? Open
- 23:29Speaker 1: how do The bengals get him open when every defense
- 23:32Speaker 1: they face is designed to try to shut him.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Down that becomes a function of a couple of. Things
- 23:37Speaker 2: and believe, me there are, times and you know, this
- 23:39Speaker 2: you know where teams clearly and situationally will double. Him
- 23:44Speaker 2: there's no question that that does. Occur and by the,
- 23:46Speaker 2: way there's been times he's beat double teams, too which
- 23:49Speaker 2: make you know is one of the reasons he's so.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Great BUT i think what you get into AND i
- 23:53Speaker 2: don't have a breakdown in front of me because you,
- 23:55Speaker 2: know you AND i are just kind of talking. BALL
- 23:57Speaker 2: i didn't know what you were going to talk to me.
- 23:58Speaker 2: About BUT i think they do a really really good.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Job and you have to do this now in the
- 24:05Speaker 2: league with formation, variation, Movement chase does not just line
- 24:09Speaker 2: up in one. Spot he's not just the BOUNDARY, x
- 24:12Speaker 2: even though he can line up. There he's not just
- 24:15Speaker 2: this or just. That he lines up all over the.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Formation they'll he'll go in motion at. TIMES i, mean you,
- 24:21Speaker 2: know you're trying to dictate to the defense that, hey
- 24:25Speaker 2: if they want to double, him then you're going to
- 24:27Speaker 2: have to make them adjust just before the snap of
- 24:30Speaker 2: the ball and or just or line up in a
- 24:34Speaker 2: way that maybe they are not really comfortable, playing because
- 24:38Speaker 2: If chase is in a certain, spot well now we
- 24:41Speaker 2: may be a little uncomfortable with who we have playing T,
- 24:43Speaker 2: higgins you. Know so it's you, know fans always, say,
- 24:47Speaker 2: well just double them on every. Play, well you AND
- 24:50Speaker 2: i both know the game doesn't quite work like. That
- 24:52Speaker 2: offenses know those things, too so they do a lot
- 24:55Speaker 2: of different. Things BUT i remember When chase came out
- 24:59Speaker 2: and he didn't play as last year in college as
- 25:00Speaker 2: many might, remember BECAUSE i believe that was THE covid,
- 25:03Speaker 2: year serves me, Correctly BUT i remember watching all his
- 25:07Speaker 2: tape the year prior when you, know which is twenty
- 25:09Speaker 2: nineteen when they won The national championship When borrow was the,
- 25:12Speaker 2: quarterback AND i remember the player and he's, bigger but
- 25:16Speaker 2: the player that he reminded me. Of AND i don't
- 25:20Speaker 2: Think i've said this in, years Because chase is his own,
- 25:22Speaker 2: guy and to, Me chase And jefferson are the two
- 25:24Speaker 2: best receivers in. Football he reminded me of a Bigger Steve.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Smith does that make any sense to?
- 25:31Speaker 1: You in some? WAYS i, mean competitiveness when the ball
- 25:36Speaker 1: is in the, air one of those two guys is
- 25:38Speaker 1: going to come down with. It great after the, catch.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Explosive great after the, catch can be a little, nasty
- 25:45Speaker 2: you know at. Times, YEAH i MEAN i just that's
- 25:48Speaker 2: the guy that jumped out to me WHEN i watched
- 25:50Speaker 2: his college, tape and nothing in THE nfl has changed
- 25:53Speaker 2: my view of. That you, know that's kind of you,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Know HE'S i just think he's absolutely. Terrific he's so.
- 26:00Speaker 2: EXPLOSIVE i think he's a really good route runner. TOO
- 26:02Speaker 2: i think that's probably overlooked because he's so explosive and
- 26:06Speaker 2: just a body. TYPE i, mean he, is he is
- 26:08Speaker 2: just so solidly. Built so AS i, SAID i look
- 26:11Speaker 2: At Jason jefferson as the two best receivers in the.
- 26:13Speaker 1: League all, right a few more questions For Greg cosel
- 26:16Speaker 1: from ESPN's Matchup show AND nfl. Films let's talk defense
- 26:21Speaker 1: a little. Bit El bolden comes From Notre dame to
- 26:24Speaker 1: become the defensive. Coordinator his defense last year was fourth
- 26:27Speaker 1: and points allowed number one in. Takeaways i'm sure you
- 26:31Speaker 1: saw a lot Of Notre dame's defense as you study
- 26:34Speaker 1: their players for the. Draft did anything stand out about
- 26:37Speaker 1: his defense as a?
- 26:39Speaker 2: Whole you, Know it's, FUNNY i didn't study you, Know
- 26:42Speaker 2: i'm usually looking at. Players you, KNOW i guess the
- 26:45Speaker 2: thing That i'm very curious, about and you know you're,
- 26:50Speaker 2: there so you may have a. Sense i'm curious to
- 26:53Speaker 2: see if there's going to be you, know more. Crusher you,
- 26:57Speaker 2: KNOW i never viewed The bengals as kind of a
- 26:59Speaker 2: pressure sure. Defense you, know they weren't. TIMES i, mean
- 27:03Speaker 2: everybody is at, times but you know a lot of
- 27:06Speaker 2: times when it comes to, pressure you have to feel
- 27:08Speaker 2: good about your. Corners you, Know Notre, dame, ACTUALLY i
- 27:12Speaker 2: Mean Marson Benjamin morrison got, hurt but they had memory
- 27:16Speaker 2: serves me. Correctly they had a freshman corner who was,
- 27:19Speaker 2: really really. Good it's probably going to be a top
- 27:21Speaker 2: pick in a couple of. Years but and of course
- 27:24Speaker 2: they had the safety In, watts whose the third round
- 27:27Speaker 2: pick OF i Guess. Atlanta They atlanta, right so that
- 27:32Speaker 2: they had really they had a really good back. End
- 27:35Speaker 2: but you, KNOW i guess if the season were to
- 27:39Speaker 2: start tomorrow on the, outside would we be looking At
- 27:42Speaker 2: turner and Tailor.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Britt, probably although With Dax hill he was so successful
- 27:49Speaker 1: as an outside corner last. Year, yeah there's some thought
- 27:52Speaker 1: that he moves to the slot because he played a
- 27:55Speaker 1: lot of that in. College on the other, hand it's
- 27:58Speaker 1: so hard to find good out outside. Corners, yeah and
- 28:01Speaker 1: he was their. Best do you leave him out there
- 28:05Speaker 1: and then figure out the slot Between Josh, newton who
- 28:09Speaker 1: was a rookie last, year Maybe Jalen davis who's been
- 28:12Speaker 1: good as a. BACKUP i think that's that's going to
- 28:15Speaker 1: be a resolve during training.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Camp, yeah AND i think that's a big question Because Dax.
- 28:21Speaker 2: HILL i, thought what week did he get hurt last?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Year it was The baltimore. GAME i think it Was week.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Five If i've GOT i, THOUGHT i.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Thought he played really well at outside, corner AND i
- 28:33Speaker 2: think he's got the traits to be you, know it's
- 28:35Speaker 2: FUNNY i said that in my notes WHEN i did
- 28:39Speaker 2: him coming, out, because as you, know when he was In,
- 28:41Speaker 2: michigan he played. Safety he played safety in their base
- 28:46Speaker 2: and he played slot in their sub packages At Notre
- 28:50Speaker 2: dame excuse, me At, michigan and he was really good at.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Both and obviously he was drafted as a safety because
- 28:55Speaker 2: that was in a sense primary. Position BUT i made
- 28:58Speaker 2: a note AS i watched, HIM i, Said, god with
- 29:01Speaker 2: his traits and his side THAT i thought he could
- 29:03Speaker 2: play outside corner in the. League and you, know we
- 29:06Speaker 2: you AND i have had this conversation a couple of,
- 29:08Speaker 2: times and obviously they made the. Move AND i think
- 29:11Speaker 2: you got to start at outside, Corner, like if you
- 29:13Speaker 2: feel he's one of your two best outside, corners to,
- 29:16Speaker 2: me he's got to go. There i'm not saying slot's not.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Important it's become obviously an increasingly important position in the.
- 29:22Speaker 2: League BUT i think you got to start on the,
- 29:24Speaker 2: outside and if he's one of your two, best he's
- 29:27Speaker 2: got to that's where he's got to.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Play he was their best last, year and again there
- 29:32Speaker 1: wasn't a ton of, games But i'm inclined to. AGREE
- 29:36Speaker 1: i think if he's your best outside corner with a
- 29:39Speaker 1: position of that, importance at least that's where you. Begin
- 29:43Speaker 1: and then IF dj And Cam taylor Brit are having great,
- 29:47Speaker 1: camps maybe you. Reconsider BUT i think as well as
- 29:50Speaker 1: he played it last, year that's where you start him
- 29:53Speaker 1: and you go from.
- 29:53Speaker 2: There, well the interesting thing to me, is you, know
- 29:57Speaker 2: look the way drafts work, out you never, know it's
- 29:59Speaker 2: always easy FOR i went to say they should have drafted,
- 30:01Speaker 2: this or they should have drafted. That you, know you
- 30:02Speaker 2: know how drafts work. OUT i never do that because
- 30:05Speaker 2: there's so many. Factors i'm not in draft, rooms you,
- 30:08Speaker 2: KNOW i. Don't you, know there's just too many variables
- 30:10Speaker 2: to start saying things about how you know what teams.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Do but obviously it's essentially the same group on the
- 30:17Speaker 2: back end as it was a year. Ago so since
- 30:20Speaker 2: they did not make a, move they must feel pretty.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Comfortable these players are still, young you, know and they're
- 30:26Speaker 2: with them every. Day you, Know i'm. Not you're you,
- 30:29Speaker 2: know you're around, it so you you, know you know
- 30:30Speaker 2: more THAN i. Do BUT i Mean turner was a
- 30:33Speaker 2: second round. Pick battle was a you, know third round.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Pick Taylor britt was a second round. PICK i know
- 30:38Speaker 2: he had his ups and downs last. YEAR i Thought
- 30:42Speaker 2: Josh newton was probably more, worthy you, know could have
- 30:45Speaker 2: been drafted higher than a fifth round. Pick BUT i
- 30:47Speaker 2: thought playing both snaps in the slot and outside last,
- 30:50Speaker 2: year he quitted himself. Reasonably well when you, agree totally,
- 30:53Speaker 2: agree you. Know so they you, know they obviously feel that,
- 30:58Speaker 2: hey morek you, know knew some new, coaches you, know
- 31:01Speaker 2: a little bit of a new system that, hey these
- 31:04Speaker 2: guys can line up and play because you. Can't. Look
- 31:08Speaker 2: you AND i both know you can't go into AN
- 31:11Speaker 2: nfl season feeling like you're not good at. Corner that's
- 31:14Speaker 2: just too much of a. Hindrance so they obviously believe
- 31:18Speaker 2: some combination Of, Turner, Newton Taylor britt And hill on the,
- 31:23Speaker 2: outside some combination of that is going to get the job.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Done so you listed several of the guys that they've
- 31:31Speaker 1: used high draft picks on on defense in recent. Years
- 31:35Speaker 1: let me hit you with a couple other, names guys
- 31:37Speaker 1: that are expected to play much more significant roles this.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Year Miles murphy And Chris. Jenkins what do you think
- 31:44Speaker 1: of those two as they step into or at least
- 31:48Speaker 1: we figure step, into more prominent.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Roles murphy is in some ways a carbon, copy although
- 31:54Speaker 2: not quite as, freaky but he's somewhat of a carbon
- 31:58Speaker 2: copy Of Shamar. Stewart you watched, him you, know look at,
- 32:01Speaker 2: him and you, know you know you see. Him this
- 32:03Speaker 2: guy looks like he should be a really good. PLAYER i,
- 32:06Speaker 2: mean he's, big he's, long he's. Athletic everything About Miles
- 32:11Speaker 2: murphy says this guy should be able to be a
- 32:13Speaker 2: good D. N i can't tell you why it hasn't happened,
- 32:16Speaker 2: yet you, KNOW i certainly don't know, him but you're.
- 32:20Speaker 2: RIGHT i, mean, look let's assume The hendricksons thing works.
- 32:23Speaker 2: OUT i, mean he's you know how stuff gets said In,
- 32:26Speaker 2: may AND i you, know if he's not, traded he's
- 32:29Speaker 2: not going to sit out the whole season that that
- 32:32Speaker 2: just doesn't, happen you, know so and when it does,
- 32:35Speaker 2: happen guys ruined their careers and HE'S i don't think
- 32:37Speaker 2: he's gonna do that, personally but you, KNOW i don't
- 32:40Speaker 2: know Trade, Hendrickson but let's assume he's back so now
- 32:43Speaker 2: they're still looking for that other age. Player you, know
- 32:46Speaker 2: they have a sigh who hasn't quite been the. Guy you,
- 32:49Speaker 2: Know murphy was drafted. To, REALLY i, mean he's the
- 32:51Speaker 2: first round, pick as you, know and he looks the.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Part so it's in an ideal world they would love
- 32:57Speaker 2: it to Be stewart Or. MURPHY i, mean that's the bottom,
- 32:59Speaker 2: line you know. That you, Know Chris, jenkins to, ME
- 33:03Speaker 2: i think he's a solid. Player you, know he's a
- 33:05Speaker 2: second round. PICK i don't think he'll ever be a,
- 33:08Speaker 2: stud BUT i think he could be a, nice solid rotational. Player,
- 33:11Speaker 2: look they SIGNED. Tj. Slayton that tells you a lot right.
- 33:15Speaker 2: There you, KNOW i think they SIGNED. Tj slayton to
- 33:17Speaker 2: start a detackle on their base. Defense, correct they didn't sign.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Him they didn't sign him to be a. Backup they
- 33:23Speaker 2: signed him to be a. Starter and then because they
- 33:25Speaker 2: still HAVE Bj, hill who's quietly a very nice player
- 33:28Speaker 2: as a base defensive, tackle that Means Chris jenkins is
- 33:31Speaker 2: not going to play in the base. DEFENSE i, mean
- 33:33Speaker 2: he might get snaps, rotationally but he's not going to
- 33:36Speaker 2: be one of the main guys in your base. Defense
- 33:38Speaker 2: so they obviously don't see him yet as that, guy.
- 33:42Speaker 1: But they do want to rotate, guys And i'm sure
- 33:45Speaker 1: he will get playing with snaps this. Year plus he
- 33:47Speaker 1: played last year with a broken. Thumb hopefully with two healthy,
- 33:50Speaker 1: hands he'll be more effective this. Year final question For Great.
- 33:54Speaker 1: COSEEL i really appreciate all of your. Time The bengals
- 33:57Speaker 1: are four years removed from Their Super bowl. Appearing it's
- 34:00Speaker 1: their three years removed from their last trip to THE
- 34:02Speaker 1: Afc Championship. Game where are The bengals right now in your?
- 34:07Speaker 1: Mind still a top? Contender are they at a? Crossroads
- 34:11Speaker 1: how would you classify The bengals going into year? Six
- 34:14Speaker 1: For joe.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Burrow, WELL i would answer that by saying that it's
- 34:18Speaker 2: all function of their, defense because you, know AGAIN i
- 34:22Speaker 2: don't remember the exact stat but weren't there something like
- 34:26Speaker 2: five or six or games or four games last year
- 34:29Speaker 2: where they scored thirty three or more points and? Loss
- 34:31Speaker 2: there was some ridiculous number like. That AM i?
- 34:34Speaker 1: Right it was three with thirty three plus and FIVE
- 34:38Speaker 1: i believe with thirty.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Plus, Yeah so you, KNOW i think we're okay on.
- 34:43Speaker 2: OFFENSE i Mean i'm not thinking. SARCASTIC i think we're
- 34:45Speaker 2: okay on. Offense you, know the main thing is defense,
- 34:48Speaker 2: here and you, know, look there's a lot a lot
- 34:52Speaker 2: of the players are the. Same so they made a coaching.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Change you, know that happens when you're you, know it's
- 34:58Speaker 2: and by the, WAY i don't think little lenarm and
- 35:00Speaker 2: you know him as a bad coach by any. Means
- 35:02Speaker 2: but you, know we know how the league, works and
- 35:04Speaker 2: it didn't Take lou long to get you, know to
- 35:06Speaker 2: get taken up by another. Team so you, KNOW i
- 35:09Speaker 2: think he's a highly respected. Guy but you, know things
- 35:11Speaker 2: do change in the. League so to, me it's a
- 35:13Speaker 2: function of. Defense so they have to be the best
- 35:15Speaker 2: defense in the. League, no but no matter how good
- 35:18Speaker 2: your offense, is every once in a, while you got
- 35:20Speaker 2: to win a game twenty. Seventeen that's just the nature
- 35:22Speaker 2: of the. League and to me it speaks to even
- 35:28Speaker 2: how much Greater borrow is than we spoke about the
- 35:30Speaker 2: fact that he probably feels like he has to score
- 35:33Speaker 2: thirty five every week just to. Compete and that's a
- 35:37Speaker 2: hard road to hoe every single, week even for someone
- 35:41Speaker 2: Like Joe, burrow you, know who's pretty much unflappable about.
- 35:44Speaker 2: It but to, me it all comes down to the.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Defense you, know they're going to have to be able
- 35:48Speaker 2: to stop, people and they cannot give up these big.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Plays that's the, killer you, know every you, KNOW i,
- 35:54Speaker 2: WAS i was down In tennessee doing a live podcast
- 35:56Speaker 2: AND i got a chance to spend time With Ryan
- 35:58Speaker 2: callahan and all they and you Know brian, well and,
- 36:01Speaker 2: actually you, KNOW i got to know him well and
- 36:03Speaker 2: we've connected and he's just a terrific, guy as you.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Know and all they talk about is exposed to plays
- 36:10Speaker 2: on both sides of the, ball you. Know you know
- 36:12Speaker 2: that that's the way coaches, talk and you know there's
- 36:14Speaker 2: just too many exposive plays on. Defense you can't live like.
- 36:17Speaker 3: That.
- 36:18Speaker 1: GREG i love talking to. You my audience loves hearing from.
- 36:22Speaker 1: YOU i took a lot of your time AND i
- 36:24Speaker 1: really appreciate. IT i PROMISE i will not bother you
- 36:27Speaker 1: again until some point during the. Season it's.
- 36:29Speaker 2: FINE i love talking with. You we're just talking. Ball you,
- 36:32Speaker 2: Know it's this is WHAT i. Do it's the off.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Season It's. May i'm Sitting i'm watching. TAPE i, mean
- 36:36Speaker 2: is WHAT i? Do you, Know it's just the nice
- 36:39Speaker 2: thing for me right, now IS i don't have a,
- 36:41Speaker 2: deadline So i'm just sitting if it takes me a
- 36:43Speaker 2: little longer to watch, something OR i feel like taking
- 36:45Speaker 2: a ten minute. Break it's not, like oh my, GOD
- 36:47Speaker 2: i got to get this, done you know, so which
- 36:49Speaker 2: is the WAY i feel during the, season either the.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Way if you would like to read everything That greg
- 36:55Speaker 1: wrote about this year's draft, prospects do a quick search

- 37:37Speaker 1: few minutes with a player that you could run into
- 37:41Speaker 1: At King's island. Someday time for Five questions with fourth
- 37:45Speaker 1: round draft Pick Barrett carter out Of. Clemson question number,
- 37:49Speaker 1: One when you were in high, school you are named
- 37:52Speaker 1: the national defensive player of the. Year is there a big?
- 37:57Speaker 1: Banquet do you get a great? Trophy what other rewards
- 38:00Speaker 1: for being the national defensive player of the year in high?
- 38:03Speaker 4: SCHOOL i got A i got a little. TROPHY i
- 38:08Speaker 4: think that was. It but other than, THAT i MEAN i, think,
- 38:12Speaker 4: Yeah i'm pretty sure that was. It just just a little.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Trophy it's a little.
- 38:15Speaker 1: One it's not Like heisman.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Size it's Not heisman. Size it's probably probably definitely a
- 38:20Speaker 4: little smaller than. That but, uh something That i'll keep
- 38:23Speaker 4: for the rest of my. Life for.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Sure it was quite an, honor so that part of
- 38:26Speaker 1: it was. Great question number two For Barred. CARTER i
- 38:29Speaker 1: read a scouting report before the draft that, said, quote
- 38:32Speaker 1: he closes on the ball like a ravenous, predator which
- 38:36Speaker 1: is a very nice. Compliment but my question regards the
- 38:40Speaker 1: flip side of. That was something written or said before
- 38:43Speaker 1: the draft that got under your.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Skin, NO i, mean at the end of the, DAY
- 38:49Speaker 4: i didn't REALLY i didn't read into any of. IT i,
- 38:52Speaker 4: MEAN i like to stay inside out with, everything you,
- 38:54Speaker 4: Know i'm not trying to please anybody, else but but
- 38:58Speaker 4: but but myself and my teammates and my. Team you
- 39:01Speaker 4: know that's in this. Organization so nothing THAT i didn't
- 39:05Speaker 4: read it into any of. THAT i JUST i stayed
- 39:07Speaker 4: inside out and just focus on WHAT i can.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Control smart young. Man question number, three you wore the
- 39:12Speaker 1: number zero At. Clemson The bengals have never had a number.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Zero did you? Inquire, NO i did.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Not Coach taylor texted me saying there was forty nine
- 39:25Speaker 4: and fifty nine, available and you, KNOW i was just
- 39:29Speaker 4: grateful for this opportunity to be, here SO i wasn't,
- 39:31Speaker 4: gonna you, know try to press that. Anything SO i was,
- 39:33Speaker 4: like let's go forty, nine And i'm Just i'm ready
- 39:36Speaker 4: to make forty nine a new.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Number you can wear forty. Nine, well question number. Four
- 39:40Speaker 1: you're a linebacker, obviously but you had a rushing touchdown
- 39:44Speaker 1: as a running back for at least one play At.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Clemson what was the backstory behind getting the opportunity to
- 39:50Speaker 1: line up as a running back and score A Tv.
- 39:52Speaker 4: So after my junior, year WHEN i decided to come,
- 39:56Speaker 4: BACK i Told Coach, sweeney, LIKE i need a rushing,
- 39:58Speaker 4: Touchdown LIKE i DON'T i don't care which game it,
- 40:01Speaker 4: is how far down the, season how far down the
- 40:03Speaker 4: line it. Is i'm, LIKE i gotta get the end.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Zone and then our offensive coordinator Coach, Riley i'm, LIKE
- 40:08Speaker 4: i was showing my. Highlights ill show them LIKE i
- 40:10Speaker 4: used to play running. Back i'm, like just give me
- 40:12Speaker 4: one carry And i'm getting the end zone and you
- 40:14Speaker 4: know if fortunately we made it. Happen it was senior
- 40:17Speaker 4: day against The. Citadel it was actually like a fourth
- 40:20Speaker 4: and two at the at the two yard, line SO
- 40:22Speaker 4: i had to get. In but JUST i was super
- 40:25Speaker 4: blessed to you be able to line up by running.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Back we lived in my high school and little league
- 40:29Speaker 4: days and you, know getting the end. Zone but you,
- 40:32Speaker 4: know now time to put running back to bed and you,
- 40:34Speaker 4: know focus fully on.
- 40:35Speaker 1: LINEBACKER i watched the. Highlight there was a nice little.
- 40:38Speaker 1: SHIMMY i, mean you didn't just run it straight. In
- 40:41Speaker 1: there was a little shoulder.
- 40:42Speaker 4: DEEK i had, to you, know let my, blockers you,
- 40:44Speaker 4: know set up a little bit and you, know be
- 40:46Speaker 4: patient a little. Bit but, yeah it was a it
- 40:47Speaker 4: was a fun, day all.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Right fifth and final question For Barreed. CARTER i read
- 40:52Speaker 1: an old story that said you love roller. Coasters So
- 40:55Speaker 1: King's island is a little bit north of. Here they've
- 40:58Speaker 1: got The, beast The Diamond, Head banshee and. Others are
- 41:02Speaker 1: you aware of the proximity Of King's island and do
- 41:04Speaker 1: you anticipate going at some?
- 41:06Speaker 4: Point i'm not aware of, it but you, KNOW i definitely,
- 41:09Speaker 4: will you, know take a trip. There you, know my
- 41:11Speaker 4: roller coaster love is you, know started SINCE i was a,
- 41:14Speaker 4: kid and you, Know i'm gonna, continue you, know trying
- 41:16Speaker 4: to trying to visit all these you, know fun amusement.
- 41:19Speaker 4: Parks So i'm definitely gonna check Out King's island and you,
- 41:21Speaker 4: know whatever big bad roller coasters they, Have i'm ready
- 41:24Speaker 4: to attack, that just LIKE i had running backs In No.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Linamas So i'm looking forward to riding that roller coaster
- 41:30Speaker 4: and a definitely in the, offseason though not.
- 41:32Speaker 2: In not in.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Season all, Right bengals, Fans so when you get on
- 41:36Speaker 1: The beast and the guy next to you looks like
- 41:37Speaker 1: he might be a professional football, player it could Be Barry.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Carter appreciate your. Time great to have you In, Cincinnati, no,
- 41:43Speaker 1: sir thank you for having. Me, yeah let's go from
- 41:47Speaker 1: five questions to five observations after watching The bengals practice
- 41:51Speaker 1: and talking to players and coaches On. Tuesday topic number
- 41:55Speaker 1: one is the battle at right, guard with Rookie Dylon
- 41:59Speaker 1: Fairchild penn as the favorite to start at left. Guard
- 42:02Speaker 1: the starter on the other side is expected to come
- 42:05Speaker 1: after a training camp battle Between Cody, Ford Lucas, patrick
- 42:10Speaker 1: and some other less likely. Candidates last, Week ford lined
- 42:14Speaker 1: up with the. Starters this week it Was, patrick AND
- 42:18Speaker 1: i spoke to the nine year veteran who has started
- 42:20Speaker 1: For Green, Bay, chicago And New orleans after practice going
- 42:25Speaker 1: into free, agency how much homework did you do on
- 42:28Speaker 1: teams that had a need at?
- 42:30Speaker 5: GART i was really up to my. AGENT i let
- 42:35Speaker 5: them do the, business and pretty MUCH i handle playing
- 42:38Speaker 5: ball so. Much, YEAH i don't played long enough THAT
- 42:43Speaker 5: i just kind of let my take you the talk
- 42:46Speaker 5: and let him talk to the.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Teams this team throws the ball a. Lot according To
- 42:51Speaker 1: Pro Football, focus you haven't given up a sack in?
- 42:53Speaker 1: Forever is that your? Strength pass?
- 42:55Speaker 5: Pro you, know it's if you believe in no, Statistics but,
- 43:02Speaker 5: really ALL i care about is wins and losses and
- 43:04Speaker 5: competing for. Championships so if that helps the, team, great
- 43:08Speaker 5: that's What i'm asked to. Do let's do, it And
- 43:10Speaker 5: i'll work on to the best of my. Ability if
- 43:12Speaker 5: it's something, Else i'll work on.
- 43:14Speaker 1: That so there's gonna be a royal. Rumble it looks
- 43:17Speaker 1: like to determine the starter or right. Guard you're running
- 43:20Speaker 1: with the ones today for what that's worth at this
- 43:22Speaker 1: stage of the, Year but what is your approach you
- 43:24Speaker 1: try to win that.
- 43:25Speaker 5: JOB i think healthy competition is the best when you
- 43:28Speaker 5: have it in the. ROOM i, mean you, know there's
- 43:31Speaker 5: a couple of guys who've already been here a while
- 43:33Speaker 5: and they've been nothing but open arms to. Me AND
- 43:36Speaker 5: i can add any Value i've seen on other teams
- 43:38Speaker 5: and try and do. It and, competitions you, know you
- 43:41Speaker 5: can look at it in two different. WAYS i like
- 43:44Speaker 5: to look at his best man. Wins let's push each
- 43:46Speaker 5: other so that, whoever whoever that, is the team's better
- 43:49Speaker 5: because of. It AND i think that's the, healthy in my,
- 43:52Speaker 5: opinion a healthy.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Mindset where are your impressions Of Scott's peter so? Far
- 43:56Speaker 1: and is it significantly different from what you've experienced.
- 43:59Speaker 5: In, yeah it's pretty, different but it's almost. Detailed i've
- 44:03Speaker 5: ever been During OTA's which is. Good really get to
- 44:06Speaker 5: hone some new, techniques new, crafts really set the, tone
- 44:10Speaker 5: take the fight to d. Lineman so it's. Fun it's
- 44:13Speaker 5: enjoyable to build a, toolbox especially as a.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Veteran according To Pro Football, Focus patrick is not allowed
- 44:20Speaker 1: a sack in eight hundred and sixty three pass blocking
- 44:24Speaker 1: snaps over the last two. Seasons topic number two is
- 44:28Speaker 1: his offensive line Mate Cordell. Volson as you may have,
- 44:32Speaker 1: Read volson agreed to a pay cut recently after a
- 44:35Speaker 1: season that he describes as. Disappointing after starting at left
- 44:39Speaker 1: guard for the last three, Years volson can play that
- 44:42Speaker 1: spot If Dylan fairchild struggles as a, rookie while also
- 44:46Speaker 1: competing for the starting spot on the right. Side for
- 44:49Speaker 1: what it's, Worth volson mostly played right tackle and right
- 44:53Speaker 1: guard At North Dakota. State one reason why he agreed
- 44:57Speaker 1: to the pay cut is his desire to work with
- 45:00Speaker 1: new offensive line Coach Gott. Peters absolutely, ABSOLUTELY i think you,
- 45:05Speaker 1: know he does a really.
- 45:05Speaker 6: Good job of of teaching different different strikes and different
- 45:11Speaker 6: techniques to combat different. Rushers you, know that, way you're
- 45:14Speaker 6: not throwing the same pitch every, time you, Know AND
- 45:16Speaker 6: i think that's gonna be beneficial to the whole. ROOM
- 45:19Speaker 6: i Think scott allows us to, play LIKE i talked,
- 45:23Speaker 6: about you, know play more to our skill. Set you,
- 45:26Speaker 6: know he he instills a lot of confidence in. US
- 45:29Speaker 6: i think that he he brings a good, Energy like
- 45:32Speaker 6: we enjoy talking to, him we enjoy going into meetings with.
- 45:36Speaker 6: Him SO i think that that's really. COOL i think.
- 45:39Speaker 6: It you, know it definitely makes.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Makes my day way more enjoyable for.
- 45:43Speaker 6: Sure you, KNOW i really ENJOYS uh Coach Peter, scott
- 45:48Speaker 6: so just having the opportunity to continue to learn from.
- 45:51Speaker 6: HIM i think he brings a good energy and a
- 45:54Speaker 6: lot of technique that fits my play style really. Well
- 45:58Speaker 6: just look at his body of, work the things that
- 46:00Speaker 6: he's done with the guys In cleveland and the mon
- 46:04Speaker 6: of guys that played for him last year In New.
- 46:07Speaker 6: England you, know they were kind of got the injury.
- 46:09Speaker 6: Bugs so just seeing the way that he develops, guys you,
- 46:12Speaker 6: know that was a big factor of wanting me, to you,
- 46:14Speaker 6: know stay.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Here including, Playoffs volsen has started fifty one of a
- 46:19Speaker 1: possible fifty three games in his three years In. Cincinnati
- 46:23Speaker 1: topic number three is. Alignment on the other side of the.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Ball Chris. Jenkins jenkins missed the first two weeks of
- 46:30Speaker 1: his rookie season after breaking his thumb at. Practice when
- 46:33Speaker 1: he finally got on the, field he played with a
- 46:36Speaker 1: giant club on one hand to protect his. Thumb now
- 46:40Speaker 1: that he's got the use of both, hands will we
- 46:42Speaker 1: see the player who is worthy of a second round
- 46:45Speaker 1: draft pick last? Year here's d line Coach Jerry. Montgomery
- 46:49Speaker 1: we played.
- 46:49Speaker 3: With our hands in order to be productive in the.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Run you got to use your. Hands in order to
- 46:53Speaker 3: be productive as a, rusher you got to use your.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Hands so to not have one of your, tools all,
- 46:58Speaker 3: right it's. Tough, mean like for in the kids' toff
- 47:02Speaker 3: he played through it and he did some good things with.
- 47:05Speaker 3: It imagine if he had both of. THEM i, mean
- 47:07Speaker 3: you know his jump, again IF i always say from
- 47:13Speaker 3: year one to year two should be. BIG i, mean
- 47:14Speaker 3: you've been in the league one, year all, right you
- 47:17Speaker 3: get all the you know the processing out like, now
- 47:23Speaker 3: you know how fast the game, is you know what's,
- 47:27Speaker 3: expected you know how to prepare a little bit. Better
- 47:29Speaker 3: you know how to, study you know how to take
- 47:32Speaker 3: care of your. Body so all those things go into
- 47:34Speaker 3: account of the year, one year, two and especially being
- 47:37Speaker 3: able to have two.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Hands jenkins was a second Team All american and a
- 47:41Speaker 1: team captain For michigan's national championship squad two years. Ago
- 47:45Speaker 1: topic number four is undrafted wide Receiver Jordan moore out Of.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Duke it seems like every year there's an undrafted wide
- 47:54Speaker 1: receiver that catches your eye at training, camp and a
- 47:57Speaker 1: few have earned important roles like To irwin And Alex.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Erikson moore is a guy to keep an eye on this.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Year after playing quarterback as a, freshman he had three
- 48:08Speaker 1: straight seasons with at least fifty five catches and finished
- 48:12Speaker 1: His duke career with twenty one touchdown. Grabs here's more
- 48:15Speaker 1: and wide receivers Coach Troy, walters All, Right, jordan what's
- 48:19Speaker 1: it been like for you to be a rookie receiver
- 48:22Speaker 1: in a room With jamar and t and Having Joe
- 48:25Speaker 1: burrow as a.
- 48:25Speaker 7: QUARTERBACK i, mean it's, great and just trying to learn
- 48:28Speaker 7: as much AS i can and obviously have two of
- 48:30Speaker 7: the best of the series in the leads to learn,
- 48:31Speaker 7: from So i'm really just trying to sug up. Everything
- 48:35Speaker 7: watch all their, routes watch how they you, know walk
- 48:38Speaker 7: around the locker room how they conduct themselves and try
- 48:41Speaker 7: to emulate that BECAUSE i, mean if they're the top two,
- 48:43Speaker 7: RECEIVERS i, mean there's so MUCH i can learn from.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Them tell us why you elected to sign With. CINCINNATI
- 48:49Speaker 1: i think.
- 48:51Speaker 7: Having The zoom meeting with Coach, WALTERS i, mean our values,
- 48:56Speaker 7: aligned and when we went through the, offense it seemed
- 48:59Speaker 7: like a offense that's friendly to receivers and they do
- 49:03Speaker 7: a lot of different things to get guys. Open so
- 49:05Speaker 7: that's something that intrigued.
- 49:06Speaker 1: ME i, know you have quarterback in your, background including
- 49:09Speaker 1: your first year A. Duke how quickly and easily did
- 49:12Speaker 1: wide receiver come to?
- 49:13Speaker 6: You?
- 49:14Speaker 7: Mentally it came pretty, easy but you, know actually running
- 49:17Speaker 7: routes and, actually you, know being out there at receiver
- 49:21Speaker 7: was it was a lot different THAN i was that.
- 49:23Speaker 7: Quarterback SO i, Mean i'm very grateful for my background
- 49:26Speaker 7: at quarterback to help me in the mental aspect of the.
- 49:29Speaker 7: Game and you, know the physical aspect just takes, work
- 49:32Speaker 7: And i've been working as hard AS i.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Could you obviously had some great seasons At. Duke were
- 49:36Speaker 1: you surprised not to be?
- 49:37Speaker 7: DRAFTED i mean they've always told me everybody's always told
- 49:41Speaker 7: me it doesn't matter how you get, here as long
- 49:42Speaker 7: as you get. Here AND i, mean the draft is.
- 49:44Speaker 7: Over and as a, kid you always Dreamed bay getting
- 49:47Speaker 7: drafted with but then it. Happened SO i just got
- 49:49Speaker 7: to move on and keep.
- 49:50Speaker 8: Working Number one great young. Man from the TIME i
- 49:54Speaker 8: called him and zoomed him and we talked some, ball
- 49:57Speaker 8: got to know. Him he's a a, PLUS a plus
- 50:01Speaker 8: young man fits our, culture, competitor wants to be, great,
- 50:06Speaker 8: Coachable So i'm very proud and excited to have him
- 50:10Speaker 8: as one of our.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Guys he was a quarterback his first year At. Duke
- 50:13Speaker 1: how far along is he as a wide receiver a
- 50:15Speaker 1: couple of years after.
- 50:16Speaker 8: That he's done a great. Job you couldn't tell that
- 50:19Speaker 8: he's you, know he's transitioned from quarterback to. Receiver you,
- 50:23Speaker 8: know he's a good route, runner very technical in terms
- 50:26Speaker 8: of his his, fundamentals his, techniques understands the. GAME i
- 50:30Speaker 8: think the quarterback being a quarterback former quarterback helps him
- 50:34Speaker 8: in terms of just understanding, coverages understanding what the defense
- 50:37Speaker 8: is trying to, do understand what the quarterback is thinking
- 50:39Speaker 8: on every. Play and SO i think that's helped him
- 50:42Speaker 8: here pick up the offense and he's done a great.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Job more was a team captain and was Named DUKE'S
- 50:47Speaker 1: mvp last. Year the fifth and final topic Involves Jamar
- 50:52Speaker 1: chase AND T. Higgins the weather conditions On tuesday were.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Dreary it was rainy and kind of, chilly but after
- 50:59Speaker 1: holding part of practice in THE i. E L indoor,
- 51:02Speaker 1: facility The bengals moved outdoors to get some reps in
- 51:06Speaker 1: under the type of conditions they will have to play
- 51:08Speaker 1: in at some point during the year in any. Case after,
- 51:12Speaker 1: practice a small group of fans waited in the rain
- 51:16Speaker 1: in hopes of getting, autographs And jamar And t rewarded
- 51:20Speaker 1: their patients by stopping and signing long term contract. Extensions
- 51:26Speaker 1: haven't changed them once. Again here's wide receivers Coach Troy.
- 51:30Speaker 8: Walters they're always, happy excited to have a smile in their.
- 51:34Speaker 8: Face they love the, game they love to, practice so
- 51:36Speaker 8: none of that has. Changed BUT i think probably internally
- 51:40Speaker 8: they'll probably relieved that they got the got the deal.
- 51:42Speaker 8: Done they can just go play football and there's nothing
- 51:45Speaker 8: hanging over their heads and they've been. Awesome they understand
- 51:48Speaker 8: the to who much is, given much is required much as,
- 51:51Speaker 8: expected and so you, know we're not paying that type
- 51:55Speaker 8: of money for them to come in and not not,
- 51:57Speaker 8: produced not be big time, players top top five receivers
- 52:01Speaker 8: in the. League and so they understand and they're attacking
- 52:03Speaker 8: it and doing a good.
