- 0:02Speaker 1: Thirteen ten WIBA and asked the experts hanging out today
- 0:06Speaker 1: with Madeline? She is with so lost natural burial preserved. Maddie,
- 0:10Speaker 1: how are you doing this morning? Good?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Good to talk with you and Madeline. Let's talk about
- 0:16Speaker 1: natural burial and kind of how it works. And I've
- 0:20Speaker 1: got a guess for a place like Madison, Dane County,
- 0:22Speaker 1: southern Wisconsin. This is something that a lot of people
- 0:25Speaker 1: have been looking for, isn't it.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, So most people are probably familiar with what's called
- 0:30Speaker 2: conventional burial, where when someone passes, they go to a
- 0:33Speaker 2: funeral home, they're embalmed, and then they're buried in a
- 0:36Speaker 2: casket and a vault and then they have you know,
- 0:39Speaker 2: a vertical headstone. But natural burial is kind of returning
- 0:43Speaker 2: to what people did hundreds of years ago. So you're
- 0:46Speaker 2: not embalmed, you can be buried in a natural casket,
- 0:49Speaker 2: which is you know, untreated, unstained, and then there's no
- 0:53Speaker 2: vaults and there's no above ground headstone.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Very cool. How have people responded? I know you guys
- 0:58Speaker 1: have obviously I've heard about you, and I know you
- 1:00Speaker 1: guys have been doing this a little bit. I've got
- 1:02Speaker 1: to guess people are really responding well to this option.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been great. Most people once they know about
- 1:08Speaker 2: natural burial, it kind of seems like the obvious choice.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's just about educating people.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And a little bit about that education you mentioned obviously
- 1:16Speaker 1: the natural process, and I think a lot of us
- 1:19Speaker 1: are concerned with, you know, how are we going to
- 1:21Speaker 1: leave leave this plant literally, how we're going to leave
- 1:23Speaker 1: this planet when we're gone, And you know, we hear
- 1:26Speaker 1: about some of the other things out there, and you know,
- 1:29Speaker 1: these things that not necessarily the best for everything. So
- 1:32Speaker 1: when we talk about this process, can you work with
- 1:35Speaker 1: like a standard funeral home and make arrangements that way
- 1:38Speaker 1: or how do how do we kind of walk walk
- 1:41Speaker 1: us through that Mattling.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so you can still work with a funeral home.
- 1:44Speaker 2: We will you know, work with whoever you choose. They
- 1:47Speaker 2: can provide services that are not embalming, so they can
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, transport someone or you know, provide an alternative
- 1:54Speaker 2: until the burial, and they can assist with the process.
- 1:58Speaker 2: If you you know, want to have a religious herermony,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you can you know, choose whoever you want to perform that,
- 2:03Speaker 2: or if you want to have you know, something that's
- 2:06Speaker 2: not religious. You can do whatever kind of celebration of
- 2:09Speaker 2: life or thing that you want.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Let's talk about Madeline, about the property, about the area,
- 2:15Speaker 1: the area that we do. We call it. It's still cemetery, right,
- 2:19Speaker 1: is that the correct term for it? Okay? I didn't
- 2:21Speaker 1: know if with this there's thing maybe a different definition.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But let's I know it's talking about what twenty acres.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It's a big beautiful area on the on the west side, isn't.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's a twenty acre natural burial preserve. So
- 2:33Speaker 2: we're certified as a natural burial cemetery. And our plots
- 2:37Speaker 2: are about five times bigger than a conventional plot. So
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's not going to look like kind of that manicured
- 2:44Speaker 2: lawn with the big headstones. It's natural grasses and people
- 2:48Speaker 2: can choose a tree as their burial marker since we
- 2:51Speaker 2: don't have headstones, so it looks a lot more like
- 2:54Speaker 2: a park than a conventional cemetery.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Oh, that sounds absolutely beautiful. And with that with people
- 3:00Speaker 1: kind of thinking about doing this with I know that
- 3:03Speaker 1: for good reason, folks are pre planning funerals and other
- 3:06Speaker 1: and other things. This are the are they I'd asked
- 3:09Speaker 1: you earlier about kind of working with the funeral homeless.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Are they are they in tune with this? Are I mean,
- 3:14Speaker 1: are they catching on? Is this something that that we're
- 3:16Speaker 1: finding them recommending as an option or is this something
- 3:19Speaker 1: people should really be bringing up or combination of both.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of both. So there's only one other
- 3:25Speaker 2: natural cemetery in the state of Wisconsin, so it is
- 3:29Speaker 2: a little bit of a newer concept. But funeral homes will,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, work with you if that's what you choose
- 3:37Speaker 2: to do. But I would definitely encourage people, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: to research on your own what the best choice is
- 3:42Speaker 2: for you.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Talking this morning with Madeline, she is with a Solace
- 3:45Speaker 1: Natural Burial Preserve. You can learn more online the website
- 3:48Speaker 1: Solace Natural Burial dot com. That's so Las Natural Burial
- 3:53Speaker 1: dot com. I think sometimes people used to believe that
- 3:57Speaker 1: things like cremation were were like the green alternative or
- 4:01Speaker 1: the better way to go. Clearly, anytime you are creating
- 4:04Speaker 1: large amounts to heats to do that, it's not the
- 4:07Speaker 1: best thing for the environment, is it.
- 4:09Speaker 2: No. So in the US, according to the Green Berrial Council,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the people use about nine million gallons of fuel a
- 4:15Speaker 2: year for cremations, and it creates a lot of gases,
- 4:19Speaker 2: so it's not really friendly for the environment. And also
- 4:23Speaker 2: a lot of people scatter ashes, which can actually smother
- 4:27Speaker 2: some of the plant life. So if you've already made
- 4:29Speaker 2: the choice to be cremated, we encourage people to bury
- 4:32Speaker 2: the cremation remains instead of scattering them.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Very a good, good, important guidance with this too, as
- 4:39Speaker 1: I think of you know, where we're looking and you know,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and being that being that conscientious of the future as well.
- 4:48Speaker 1: When people are learning about this process, are they sometimes
- 4:51Speaker 1: surprised when they learn it because I feel like ignorance
- 4:55Speaker 1: is bliss when we think about some of the traditional
- 4:57Speaker 1: embalming methods and things. I've got to guess people are
- 5:00Speaker 1: becoming more educated. They're probably some of them are quite
- 5:03Speaker 1: alarmed to say, I can't believe that that's the way
- 5:05Speaker 1: things used to be done.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I think that's how I was, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: before I really learned about this. I think, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: when someone passes away, you kind of just hand it
- 5:13Speaker 2: off to the funeral home. And most people don't really
- 5:16Speaker 2: research what is actually happening during the embalming process, and
- 5:20Speaker 2: it's quite invasive and it's really unnecessary. There's no reason
- 5:24Speaker 2: to do it, so you can just choose the natural
- 5:27Speaker 2: way instead.
- 5:28Speaker 1: It's great and it's great to have that option. Cost wise,
- 5:31Speaker 1: are are we talking about similar similar ballpark pricing wise,
- 5:35Speaker 1: those type of things.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So we are about a quarter of the price of
- 5:39Speaker 2: a conventional really. Yeah. So one of the funeral homes
- 5:44Speaker 2: in this area quoted me a few years ago that
- 5:47Speaker 2: their typical burial or funeral excuse me, with cremation is
- 5:51Speaker 2: about fifteen thousand dollars and their typical funeral with a
- 5:55Speaker 2: burial is about twenty thousand dollars. And our plots start
- 5:59Speaker 2: at fourth. Oh, so we're a lot less expensive.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Quite a bit. Well, that's that's great to hear as well,
- 6:06Speaker 1: because I think also sometimes people think, and I see
- 6:08Speaker 1: it with other other things that that are out there
- 6:11Speaker 1: for folks to kind of make make the smarter decision.
- 6:13Speaker 1: They think, well, there's got to be a premium, there's
- 6:15Speaker 1: got to be a cost. And to find out that
- 6:17Speaker 1: not only is there not a premium, it's actually a
- 6:19Speaker 1: more affordable option, that is really good to hear. Would
- 6:21Speaker 1: you guys do appointments for people that want to maybe
- 6:23Speaker 1: learn more, explore this as an option.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely so. On our website, we have our phone
- 6:29Speaker 2: number and email and we've had people reach out who
- 6:32Speaker 2: you know, they want to come see the UH cemetery first,
- 6:36Speaker 2: and we're happy to you know, walk you through it
- 6:38Speaker 2: and you know, if you want to pick a plot
- 6:40Speaker 2: or see kind of where the plots are, we're happy
- 6:42Speaker 2: to meet with people.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Oh that is great to see. And of course you
- 6:45Speaker 1: can learn more online at Solos Natural Burial dot com.
- 6:48Speaker 1: That's s O l A s Natural Burial dot com.
- 6:51Speaker 1: A ton of great information on the website and and
- 6:55Speaker 1: of course you can you can get more information. They're
- 6:57Speaker 1: also set up a conversation and make content there as well. Madeline,
- 7:02Speaker 1: it's really i you know, sometimes people think we're talking
- 7:05Speaker 1: about you know, we're talking about funerals and something. It's
- 7:09Speaker 1: really good to hear. I mean, it's actually really uplifting
- 7:12Speaker 1: to know that there's an option like this for people
- 7:15Speaker 1: out there. Thank you so much for sharing with us
- 7:17Speaker 1: this morning.
