- 0:00Turn with me to Acts chapter 2, and I am, in
- 0:07fact, I'm going to modify what I'm preaching
- 0:10on this morning. I can preach for hours on the
- 0:13Holy Spirit. Today is Pentecost Sunday, but we
- 0:17want to pray over you to receive a fresh touch
- 0:20from the Holy Spirit this morning. The Holy Spirit
- 0:24is our helper. And how many of you need a helper?
- 0:30How many of you are convinced that you can do
- 0:34this Christian life all by yourself? When you
- 0:41try to do that, one of two things will happen.
- 0:45You will either give up and quit, or you will
- 0:49become a Pharisee, trying to do it on your own.
- 0:55And we just freely declare, and it feels so good
- 0:58to say, God, I cannot do this on my own. I need
- 1:03what you have given me. And God has given you
- 1:05what you need for life and godliness, not so
- 1:08that you can do it on your own, but he's equipped
- 1:11you with tools. We've been given mercy. We've
- 1:15been given grace. We've been given all kinds
- 1:18of things. One of the things we've been given
- 1:22is the precious Holy Spirit, the third person
- 1:26of the Godhead. We have been given the Holy Spirit
- 1:30to help us live this Christian walk. Amen? Now,
- 1:36there are so many things that the Holy Spirit
- 1:38does in our lives, things that He equips us with,
- 1:42ways that He helps us. God helps us. Tools that
- 1:46he gives to us, the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
- 1:48so powerful, so wonderful. Jesus had told the
- 1:53apostles in Acts chapter 1, he had already given
- 1:57them, he was giving them the great commission,
- 2:00go into all the world and preach the gospel,
- 2:03and teaching them to obey everything that I have
- 2:06commanded them, baptizing them in my name. And
- 2:09then he said, and I will be with you to the end
- 2:11of the earth. He had already told them that.
- 2:14had the commandment to go into all the world
- 2:17and preach the gospel. It's why we do missions.
- 2:21But then the last thing he said was not go into
- 2:26all the world, but wait, stay in Jerusalem. And
- 2:33he said, because in a couple days, you're going
- 2:36to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. It's going
- 2:38to be the gift that I talked about from the Father.
- 2:42You're going to receive the infilling of the
- 2:45Holy Spirit. Now, Jesus did not tell them. He
- 2:49did not tell them that we know of. When the Holy
- 2:53Spirit comes upon you, you're going to pray in
- 2:55tongues. Jesus did not tell them that. When the
- 2:59Holy Spirit comes upon you, you're going to be
- 3:01able to do miracles on a level you've never been
- 3:04able to do before. Jesus did not tell them that.
- 3:07There was a whole lot that Jesus did not tell
- 3:10them. The one command that he gave to them was
- 3:13this, go and wait. And you will know when it
- 3:18happens. And so there they were in the upper
- 3:22room. It was the first experience of people being
- 3:26filled with the Holy Spirit. And we pick it up.
- 3:29They had a business meeting in chapter 1. In
- 3:32fact, the Bible also says they were in one accord
- 3:35in prayer. So they had prayer meetings. They
- 3:38had a business meeting. They elected a new apostle
- 3:40to replace Judas. They did several things during
- 3:45those 10 days. But we pick it up in chapter 2.
- 3:49Verse 1. When the day of Pentecost had fully
- 3:53come, they were all with one accord in one place,
- 3:58and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as
- 4:03of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole
- 4:07house where they were sitting. And then there
- 4:10appeared to them divided tongues as of fire,
- 4:14and one sat upon each of them, and they were
- 4:17all filled with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit
- 4:20and began to speak with other tongues as the
- 4:24Spirit gave them utterance. Hallelujah. And so,
- 4:30Lord, we ask that your word, which you've given
- 4:39to us, God, not just to know how it happened
- 4:43in the past, but so that we could know what to
- 4:47expect for our lives. I pray that it would come
- 4:51alive to us today in Jesus' name. And everybody
- 4:58said, amen, amen. In Numbers chapter 11, Moses
- 5:05was asking God, how am I going to take care of
- 5:10all of these people? There are too many for me.
- 5:15And in Numbers chapter 11, God says this in verse
- 5:2117. He says, I'm giving you 70 elders of Israel,
- 5:28in verse 16, who are known to you as leaders
- 5:32and officials among the people. Have them come
- 5:35to the tent of meeting that they might stand
- 5:37with you there. Verse 17, I will come down and
- 5:41speak with you there, and I will take some of
- 5:44the power of the Spirit that is on you, and I
- 5:48will put it on them. They will share the burden
- 5:52of the people with you so that you will not have
- 5:54to carry it alone. You see, even then, the Holy
- 5:58Spirit was a helper. Moses needed the Holy Spirit
- 6:03to help. In the days gone by, Moses relied on
- 6:08the Holy Spirit to govern and to lead Israel.
- 6:11And now God is saying, I'm going to take of the
- 6:15same spirit that is on you, which was the Holy
- 6:17Spirit, and I'm going to put it on the 70 elders
- 6:20so that they can help you. And so we read in
- 6:23verse 25, then the Lord came down in the cloud
- 6:27and spoke. spoke with Moses, and God took some
- 6:32of the power of the Spirit that was on Moses
- 6:34and put it on the 70 elders. And when the Spirit
- 6:38rested upon them, they prophesied in the camp.
- 6:46Well, two of them did not make it out. And a
- 6:49young man ran and told Moses, Eldad and Medad
- 6:53are prophesying in the camp. And so Joshua, the
- 6:57son of Nun, who had been Moses' aid since youth,
- 7:01spoke up and said, Moses, my Lord, stop them.
- 7:05Because back then, the gifts of the Spirit, the
- 7:09power of the Spirit, were only for certain people.
- 7:12And Joshua thought, well, they're acting out
- 7:15of order. They weren't with the 70. They were
- 7:19in the camp. But Moses replied, and this is why
- 7:23I read this story. Are you jealous for my sake?
- 7:27I wish that all the Lord's people were prophets
- 7:32and that the Lord would put his spirit on them
- 7:36all. Wow. Moses was looking forward to Acts chapter
- 7:472. He was prophetically replying to Joshua whether
- 7:53he... Fully understood it or not, I doubt. But
- 7:57he was looking ahead to the day when not just
- 8:01one or two were anointed by the Holy Spirit,
- 8:04but where everybody could receive of the power
- 8:09of the Holy Spirit. Moses' desire. Joshua, I
- 8:14want them all to prophesy. I don't want to be
- 8:17the only one prophesying. I don't even want just
- 8:20these 70 to prophesy. I want the whole nation
- 8:24of Israel to prophesy. Hallelujah. Oh, praise
- 8:29God. And so Moses is looking ahead to that moment.
- 8:35There were others that prophesied what would
- 8:38happen. And so we read in Isaiah chapter 44 and
- 8:43verse 3. And Isaiah prophesies, for I will pour
- 8:47water on him who is thirsty and floods on the
- 8:52dry ground. I will pour my spirit on your descendants
- 8:56and my blessing. on your offspring. They will
- 9:01spring up among the grass like willows on the
- 9:04watercourses. I will pour out my spirit, he says,
- 9:07on all flesh. Hallelujah. Glory to God. We have
- 9:12the word in Ezekiel chapter 39. And he says,
- 9:17I will not hide my face from them anymore. The
- 9:20time is coming when I will not hide my face from
- 9:23them anymore. For I shall have poured out my
- 9:26spirit on the whole house of Israel, says the
- 9:32Lord God. Praise the Lord. Isn't that good to
- 9:37hear? This is Old Testament. And then the one
- 9:40that Peter would later preach in Acts chapter
- 9:432, Joel chapter 2, and it's probably the most
- 9:46strong of the prophetic times. In Joel chapter
- 9:522, verse 28, And it shall come to pass afterward
- 9:55that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.
- 10:01on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall
- 10:04prophesy. Your old men shall dream dreams. Your
- 10:08young men shall see visions. And also on my men
- 10:12servants and my maid servants, I will pour out
- 10:15my spirit in those days. Glory to God. Hallelujah.
- 10:23Now, many of you are like me. I grew up in a
- 10:27church that taught Against the Holy Spirit. Well,
- 10:37who do you think would want teaching against
- 10:41the Holy Spirit? There has been a shroud over
- 10:48Christianity for millennium in some cases. That
- 10:55has stolen this from the church. Now there have
- 11:02been pockets of outpouring throughout history.
- 11:05I did research as a college student many years
- 11:09ago and found evidence of people being baptized
- 11:13in the Holy Spirit in almost every century. And
- 11:19it's pretty awesome. But at the turn of the 20th
- 11:22century, The outpouring of the Holy Spirit restored
- 11:27the gifts of the Spirit to the church in a way
- 11:32that we have not seen in a long time. And the
- 11:36Azusa Street outpouring in 1906 marked a beginning
- 11:42of a transformation in the church. The Assemblies
- 11:47of God, born in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas,
- 11:51with 300 people that got together and declared,
- 11:56we are going to bring the gospel to the ends
- 12:00of the earth. And so they were believing for
- 12:04one of the greatest missionary movements of all
- 12:07time, to bring the gospel to the ends of the
- 12:11earth. And we are still, 109 years later, 10
- 12:18years later, I'm not doing my math right, we
- 12:20are still committed to bringing the gospel to
- 12:25the ends of the earth in the power of the Holy
- 12:27Spirit. The power of the Holy Spirit was restored
- 12:31to the church. And here they are in this room,
- 12:38and they are... Waiting, waiting, waiting. And
- 12:47the day of Pentecost, the day of celebration.
- 12:52Oh, that's the point that I was making. Is that
- 12:58the enemy has turned this thing called the Holy
- 13:02Spirit in people's minds into something weird.
- 13:10Into something unnecessary. Into something optional.
- 13:20But the reason I believe that God coupled the
- 13:27outpouring of the Holy Spirit with the day of
- 13:30Pentecost is because Pentecost was a day of incredible
- 13:37celebration. It was a celebration of the ingathering.
- 13:43A celebration of the harvest. And they were celebrating
- 13:48with everything they had when the Holy Spirit
- 13:51came and they had even more reason to celebrate.
- 13:53Hallelujah. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is
- 13:57not something that God ever intended us to be
- 14:00cautious towards. The baptism of the Holy Spirit
- 14:04was something that God wanted His people to celebrate.
- 14:10Hallelujah. And so he coupled it with this day
- 14:13of celebration. And they were feasting and they
- 14:17were dancing and they were shouting just as Jewish
- 14:21people. And they were celebrating this festival
- 14:24together. And they turned and all the people
- 14:27in Jerusalem began to hear something. What is
- 14:30that? What is that? It sounds like a storm is
- 14:32coming. It sounds like a mighty rushing wind.
- 14:37Now, I've only heard a mighty rushing wind a
- 14:39couple of times in my life. One of them was with
- 14:43Pastor Ben in the Boundary Waters. We heard a
- 14:46mighty rushing wind. And for 20 minutes, we were
- 14:51pelted with hailstones. And I was laughing. I
- 14:55was laughing. And it was a mighty rushing wind.
- 15:02We could hear the wind blowing. from afar off,
- 15:05and it came like a train, and it hit us. I've
- 15:09got it all on video. You've got to see it. And
- 15:12they heard that sound all through Jerusalem.
- 15:16And all through Jerusalem, they gathered together,
- 15:20and they brought eyes to the place they heard
- 15:23the sound coming from. It was this upper room,
- 15:26and they turned there. And while the disciples
- 15:28are inside, tongues of fire. come into the room.
- 15:34I picture it in this room. The upper room, I'm
- 15:37sure, didn't look like this. But tongues of fire
- 15:42separating. One piece coming to rest on every
- 15:50single person as they were filled with the Holy
- 15:57Spirit. And as they were filled with the Holy
- 16:00Spirit, something happened inside. Something
- 16:03broke free inside like a river. And they began
- 16:09to pray in language that they'd never learned.
- 16:14And in this case, they were actual other human
- 16:17languages. All throughout the book of Acts, that
- 16:20does not happen. Sometimes they're called heavenly
- 16:23languages or the language of angels even. Because
- 16:27they are not necessarily always human languages.
- 16:30Sometimes they're languages that God gives you
- 16:33that only He understands. But they begin to break
- 16:37forth in these languages. And they couldn't stop.
- 16:44They kept proclaiming whatever it was in their
- 16:47heart that they were feeling. It was a heart
- 16:50feeling kind of thing. And they just broke forth
- 16:53in this praise in a language that they did not
- 16:56know what they were saying. But boy, did it feel
- 17:00good. Hallelujah. Boy, did it feel good. Boy,
- 17:04did it feel like something is happening in my
- 17:08life. Something is changing in my life. Something
- 17:12is transforming inside of me. Something is happening.
- 17:17Hallelujah. And there were dwelling in Jerusalem
- 17:22devout Jews, devout men from every nation under
- 17:25heaven. Why? They had gathered for the celebration
- 17:27of Pentecost. And when the sound occurred, the
- 17:33multitude came together and were confused. Why?
- 17:42Well, we've been standing in our own little groups
- 17:44talking with just the people that understand
- 17:46our language. And all of a sudden, we hear our
- 17:49language. And they marveled. And they began to
- 17:56speak to one another. Look, aren't those speaking?
- 17:59Aren't they Galileans? Galileans are known to
- 18:02be uneducated. They only speak their own language.
- 18:06How is it that we hear in our own language where
- 18:10we were born, Parthians, Medes, Elamites, those
- 18:13dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus,
- 18:17Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the
- 18:21parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from
- 18:24Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs.
- 18:27We hear them speaking in our own tongue. the
- 18:30wonderful works of God and so they are just feeling
- 18:35this in their heart praying in this new language
- 18:37that they've got but they are they are speaking
- 18:40forth the praises and the wonders of God in a
- 18:45language that the people around them understand
- 18:47how many of you how many of you would would just
- 18:49say that that is powerful that is a God kind
- 18:52of a thing wow wow I was in I was in Panama,
- 19:01and we were praying for people to be filled with
- 19:08the Holy Spirit. And one older gentleman, he
- 19:15did not speak the Panama language. He only spoke
- 19:19his native tongue, an indigenous tongue. And
- 19:26he was there being prayed for to be filled with
- 19:30the Holy Spirit. And he began to speak in perfect
- 19:36English. The fire of God is falling in this place.
- 19:42He did not know what he was saying. Do you know
- 19:45what he was doing? He was praying in his prayer
- 19:48language. And it was perfect English. seen a
- 19:56thing like that before or since, but it's like,
- 19:59I felt like what was happening here, the glories
- 20:03of God being displayed among them. Friends, this
- 20:08thing is real, and it's good, and it's necessary,
- 20:13and it is something that God wants to give. And
- 20:18later on, see, if it wasn't, it would have just
- 20:21stopped here. But in Acts chapter 4, guess what?
- 20:24They were filled with the Holy Spirit again.
- 20:28Hallelujah. In Acts chapter 7, and Philip went
- 20:31down to preach the gospel in Samaria, and many
- 20:34of them repented and were healed supernaturally,
- 20:38but they had not received the baptism of the
- 20:41Holy Spirit, and so they sent for Peter and John,
- 20:43and Peter and John came, and they laid hands
- 20:46on people, and they received the baptism of the
- 20:49Holy Spirit. It happened again in Acts chapter
- 20:5210. It happened again in Acts. chapter 19, and
- 20:55Paul began to ask the question. He just began
- 20:59to ask Christians everywhere, people that he
- 21:01thought were believers. If he thought that they
- 21:03were believers, he would just ask them, have
- 21:05you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?
- 21:09That was his question to people that he had met
- 21:14for the very first time, because there was a
- 21:18time in Christianity where being baptized in
- 21:22the Holy Spirit was a normal part of believing.
- 21:28I'm believing for that day to come back, friends.
- 21:31I'm believing for the impartation of the Holy
- 21:35Spirit. We've come up with these things that
- 21:38are not biblical. And so we justify it. We say
- 21:42things that are true like, well, I have the Holy
- 21:44Spirit as soon as I become a believer. And that
- 21:48is true, you do, because without the Holy Spirit,
- 21:51you never even would have become a believer.
- 21:54And so, yes, you have the Holy Spirit, but there
- 21:57is an experience called the baptism of the Holy
- 22:01Spirit that is different, that God wants to use.
- 22:05He used it in their lives to empower them so
- 22:10that they can fulfill their call in Christ. And
- 22:16Paul, I think he would go around today and he
- 22:19would ask that question. Have you received the
- 22:22Holy Spirit since you believed? And their answer
- 22:28was, well, we haven't even heard that there was
- 22:30a Holy Spirit. And he said, well, I thought,
- 22:36I'm paraphrasing here, I thought you were Christians
- 22:38already. Weren't you baptized? Yeah, but we were
- 22:42only baptized into John's baptism. Well, John's
- 22:46baptism was a baptism of repentance, but John
- 22:49came to prepare the way for the one that would
- 22:51come after him, Jesus. And so right then and
- 22:55there, those disciples of John gave their lives
- 22:58to Jesus. Hallelujah. Now, this was decades after.
- 23:05John had died. Jesus ascended the church. This
- 23:08is decades after. They had only heard about John's
- 23:12baptism. And now they were baptized in water.
- 23:17And the Bible says that when they came out of
- 23:19the water, Paul laid hands on them. And they
- 23:24received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And
- 23:28they began to pray in tongues. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
- 23:35Friends, this thing is good. It is good. And
- 23:41it is God. It is God. I need the baptism of the
- 23:47Holy Spirit to stay effective as a pastor. I
- 23:52need a baptism of the Holy Spirit in my life
- 23:55to empower me to do the things that He's called
- 23:58me to do. I need the Holy Spirit to evangelize.
- 24:03Sometimes when God, puts this flutter in my heart,
- 24:06like go talk to that stranger, which can I confess
- 24:09to you as a pastor, I'm not great at talking
- 24:12to strangers. I should be. I'm not great at it.
- 24:17But I get this nervousness, but you know what
- 24:19I do? I just pray in the Spirit. And you know
- 24:22what happens? Boldness comes on me. And then
- 24:26I can do what God's called me to do. There are
- 24:31elements of the Christian faith that cannot be
- 24:34accomplished apart from the baptism of the Holy
- 24:39Spirit. So you say, Pastor, well, isn't the resurrection
- 24:45enough? But did you notice that Peter did not
- 24:51preach after the resurrection? Peter believed.
- 25:04But Peter was still ashamed, carrying guilt.
- 25:10Jesus came to Peter and said, do you love me,
- 25:15Peter? Yes, I love you. Three times. Feed my
- 25:19sheep. Peter was not even restored then. Encounter
- 25:29with Jesus. But you notice what happens? After
- 25:35Peter is baptized in the Holy Spirit, he stands
- 25:42up with authority and with power that he did
- 25:47not have before. And he preaches to thousands.
- 25:52God amplifies his voice. And that day, as he's
- 25:58preaching the gospel, 3 ,000 people. And some
- 26:03say that's only the men. It could have been up
- 26:05to 10 ,000 people. But between 3 and 10 ,000
- 26:10people were added to the church because Peter
- 26:14was baptized in the Holy Spirit. I need the infilling
- 26:18of the Holy Spirit. I need the infilling of the
- 26:21Holy Spirit. I am dependent upon the infilling
- 26:24of the Holy Spirit. We need you, Holy Spirit.
- 26:30We need you, Holy Spirit. My whole message this
- 26:35morning was about unity. I'm going to save that
- 26:40message for another time. The unity of the Spirit.
- 26:52God wants to touch you today. Praise the Lord.
- 27:01Some of you were baptized in the Holy Spirit
- 27:03in the altar. When you came down and people laid
- 27:08hands on you, that was me. I was 13 years old.
- 27:12Came down and laid hands on me and I wept and
- 27:15cried and spoke in tongues for the very first
- 27:17time. Changed my life for it. No, I was... Yeah,
- 27:22I was 13. Some of you were in the church. Some
- 27:30of you were not in the church. Anybody baptized
- 27:33in the Holy Spirit at home? Some of you were
- 27:37filled with the Holy Spirit at your house by
- 27:41yourself. I like Dennis' story. Dennis was on
- 27:47his tractor. The Holy Spirit came on him. Filled
- 27:52him with the Holy Spirit. Driving on his tractor.
- 27:58My brother, after a year of seeking God for the
- 28:01baptism of the Holy Spirit, was baptized wondrously,
- 28:06all alone, in a field. Baptized in the Holy Spirit.
- 28:16What a good thing. Some people think, well, why
- 28:20would God fill me with His Spirit? I'm not Moses.
- 28:23I'm not Joshua. Because He wants everybody. In
- 28:31the Old Testament, it was expressed through a
- 28:33few leaders. But in the New Testament, the way
- 28:37has been made for every single one of us to receive
- 28:42the baptism of the Holy Spirit. My sister received
- 28:48the baptism of the Holy Spirit at six years old.
- 28:52She began to pray in tongues. She and her husband
- 28:57have been pastoring for decades now. She's an
- 29:02amazing woman of God. Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- 29:10I want to challenge you, those of you that have
- 29:14never received just to begin a journey. That
- 29:20journey might culminate today. You can be filled
- 29:23with the Holy Spirit this morning before you
- 29:25leave. But some of you need to go through more
- 29:30of a journey because you're not sure. And it's
- 29:36okay to have questions and to ask and to seek
- 29:44out. There's a wonderful book called They Speak
- 29:49With Other Tongues. Who wrote that book, Kathy?
- 29:55John Sherrill, the Guidepost author, who was
- 29:59an Episcopalian and went on a journey, went to
- 30:05meetings like this, sought and sought. It's a
- 30:10brutally honest book. Is that just gibberish
- 30:13I heard in the Pentecostal churches? But his
- 30:19journey culminated in a glorious infilling of
- 30:21the Holy Spirit. And it's a wonderful book. You
- 30:26can download it and you can read it. Some of
- 30:31you need a journey. Because you need to know
- 30:34in your own heart that it isn't just emotionalism.
- 30:39And it isn't just that hype in that church that
- 30:43they do. But that it really is a gift from God.
- 30:50And in the book of Acts, in Acts 2, they had
- 30:53nobody playing music. They had nobody giving
- 30:58an altar call. They were just there. And they
- 31:04just said, we're saying, God, we're waiting.
- 31:08We don't know what we're waiting for. But we're
- 31:12waiting. And when it came, They knew. And when
- 31:19he comes on you, you will know. You will know.
- 31:27It's God's gift to you. We've watched God baptize
- 31:32people from every social structure in his Holy
- 31:37Spirit. He's no regarder of men. He doesn't care.
- 31:45what flavor of life you choose. He wants to give
- 31:52you his Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord. Praise
- 32:01the Lord. Come, Holy Spirit, I need you. Come.
- 32:15Sweet Spirit, I pray. Come in Thy strength and
- 32:26Thy power. Come in Thine own special way. And
- 32:39let's sing that song we sang earlier. Melt me.
- 32:45Mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living
- 33:04God, fall fresh on me. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
- 33:20Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Lord, would you fill
- 33:24your sons and your daughters with the Holy Spirit?
