- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with you. Lance Lynn is on the beach
- 0:14Speaker 1: in Florida, and Kyle Gibson is somewhere doing dad things.
- 0:18Speaker 1: But that's okay, because we have a great guest today.
- 0:21Speaker 1: He's a really good ball player and a really good guy.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Cardinal fans know him. It's Yvonne Herrera. Yvonne, thanks for
- 0:28Speaker 1: coming on. We appreciate it.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Pleasure being here talking to you about baseball. You know,
- 0:34Speaker 3: I was honored to talk with you, Kat.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Always good, except we are a little ticked off with
- 0:40Speaker 1: Lance and Kyle. But that's for another show. All right, Yvonne,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I want to talk about the season that was. You
- 0:46Speaker 1: guys finished the season 77-85. Most of the season you
- 0:51Speaker 1: guys played really good baseball. Exceeded, I think, what a
- 0:54Speaker 1: lot of people expected from a team that's in a rebuild.
- 0:58Speaker 1: How do you assess the season?
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think... It went really good.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You know, there's definitely some guys that step forward on
- 1:07Speaker 3: the right direction. And, you know, we play a really
- 1:10Speaker 3: good baseball. We were close to the playoff race. And
- 1:14Speaker 3: I think and for the future, I think we're going
- 1:17Speaker 3: to do a great thing. So all the guys doing
- 1:19Speaker 3: their thing, working really hard to, you know, to get
- 1:22Speaker 3: better and help each other to get better. So I
- 1:25Speaker 3: think that's a really cool thing that we got going on.
- 1:28Speaker 3: And I think that's going to be really good for
- 1:29Speaker 3: the future.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You guys are really a tight group. And a lot
- 1:34Speaker 1: of guys will say, oh, this team is tight. This team,
- 1:37Speaker 1: they all like each other. This is really a tight group.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And tell me if I'm wrong, but it seemed you
- 1:42Speaker 1: guys embrace the fact that, oh, this is a young team.
- 1:45Speaker 1: They're in a rebuild. No one expects anything. It seems
- 1:48Speaker 1: like you guys embrace that and kind of took, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 1: some energy from that.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You know, like we didn't have anything to lose, you know.
- 1:58Speaker 2: All we had, we showed everything and played hard.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I think that's what we did. I think that's the
- 2:04Speaker 3: cool thing about it. You know, nobody expect anything from us.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And all of a sudden we play in the baseball and,
- 2:10Speaker 3: you know, everybody start paying attention to us. And then
- 2:14Speaker 3: we be really good teams with like high payroll, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 3: like at the end of the day that don't matter.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I think you got to go out there and, you know, perform.
- 2:23Speaker 3: You know, we all capable of playing baseball. So it's
- 2:27Speaker 3: nine against nine out there. I think we did a
- 2:30Speaker 3: good job about that.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So the rebuild, according to Haim, is something that takes time, right?
- 2:37Speaker 1: So they're going to assess how the season went and
- 2:40Speaker 1: then figure out, because Haim's goal, and I think everyone's
- 2:43Speaker 1: on board, wants him to be contenders to win a
- 2:47Speaker 1: World Series every year. So he has to assess where
- 2:51Speaker 1: the team is right now. You're on the team. You're
- 2:53Speaker 1: a big part of it. I want to ask you,
- 2:55Speaker 1: in your opinion, how far away are you guys now
- 3:00Speaker 1: from being a team that can't compete to win a
- 3:03Speaker 1: World Series?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a very good question. You know, it just
- 3:08Speaker 2: doesn't take me.
- 3:09Speaker 3: It takes all of the team commitment, you know, to,
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, all the things that we talk about in
- 3:15Speaker 3: sprint training, all the things that, you know, when you
- 3:18Speaker 3: hear from other teams, it's just like staying together and
- 3:21Speaker 3: play 160.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Dude, that's a hard part. And, you know, we.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Got great talent in minor leagues, and I think I'd
- 3:29Speaker 3: say maybe Two years, three years, I think.
- 3:32Speaker 2: We got a good chance to be in the World Series.
- 3:34Speaker 3: So, you know, I feel like we need to keep going,
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, definitely going the right direction. And I think
- 3:41Speaker 3: we're going to be really doing very soon.
- 3:45Speaker 1: 717 this past season than you had before. I know
- 3:48Speaker 1: past seasons you had some injuries to deal with. But
- 3:50Speaker 1: toward the end of the season, was there like a
- 3:53Speaker 1: wear down? Do you feel kind of beat up at
- 3:56Speaker 1: the end of a season like that or no? No, man.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm telling you, I felt great mostly all season. I
- 4:04Speaker 3: can't remember how many times I'm like, dude, I feel awful.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I feel great.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And that's the things I think with me because at
- 4:14Speaker 3: the end of the day, you're going to be tired.
- 4:18Speaker 3: That's all come from playing the game. But at least
- 4:21Speaker 3: I felt that I was able to compete every game,
- 4:24Speaker 3: do the little things. Sometimes I try to play the
- 4:28Speaker 3: big game, but I also like playing the small game too.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You did get hit by pitches an awful lot this
- 4:36Speaker 1: past season. I think with 31, I know you led
- 4:38Speaker 1: Major League Baseball in that. You didn't take them where
- 4:42Speaker 1: they put you out of the lineup for a week.
- 4:45Speaker 1: What do you think that is? Why do you think
- 4:47Speaker 1: you get hit by so many pitches?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Man, I don't know.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I don't know if like people don't like me or something,
- 4:53Speaker 3: but I think just, I think, you know, so when
- 4:58Speaker 3: I hit the inside part of the play, like I
- 5:01Speaker 3: hit the corner good, but I don't know, like I
- 5:03Speaker 3: get jammed in off. So when they go in, they
- 5:07Speaker 3: try to go in off and that's when I get
- 5:10Speaker 3: hit most of the times or like back up spin,
- 5:12Speaker 3: you know. I think, I don't think it's personal, but
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know, I don't think 31 times is as good.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I don't, I hope I don't break that record next year.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Have you ever gotten mad though? Cause let's, let's be honest.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Like you're a guy that stays pretty calm and collected.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Has there, cause I'm thinking back, I don't recall a
- 5:31Speaker 1: time where you were glaring at anyone. You kind of
- 5:34Speaker 1: just took your medicine and took your base. Was there
- 5:37Speaker 1: a time where, yeah, I didn't like this one at all.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I'd like twice.
- 5:42Speaker 3: There was a guy that hit me twice on a
- 5:46Speaker 3: three-year account.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So I was like, Are you doing this on purpose
- 5:49Speaker 2: just so you don't get a walk? So I kind
- 5:52Speaker 2: of got mad. And I won at the end of
- 5:56Speaker 2: the year. I don't remember where, but I kind of
- 5:58Speaker 2: got hit in the ribs.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And I was kind of mad just because I just
- 6:03Speaker 3: feel like it's a situation where.
- 6:05Speaker 2: You need to walk me. And then I get hit.
- 6:07Speaker 3: That's the way I think about it. But basically, three
- 6:11Speaker 3: times out of 31.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Let's talk about your defense. We just had Andre Palante on,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and he loves throwing to you. And I was asking
- 6:24Speaker 1: him why, and he said, and the words he used,
- 6:28Speaker 1: that you have a quote-unquote magic sauce on figuring out
- 6:33Speaker 1: what the right pitch is to call in certain situations.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Where do you think that comes from?
- 6:39Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like this year my preparation behind
- 6:42Speaker 3: the plate was so much better than in terms of
- 6:44Speaker 3: like calling the game, you know, knowing when to pitch
- 6:47Speaker 3: to somebody, how to attack hitters. I think I did
- 6:50Speaker 3: a job thanks to the Cardinals, you know, Ethan, Ethan
- 6:54Speaker 3: Gofford really helped me out this year, you know, get
- 6:57Speaker 3: better in the off season.
- 6:58Speaker 2: He bring energy every day. He was working out with
- 7:00Speaker 2: me and Pogi as well, the defense side. But, you know, I.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Think that's what I need to, I took a step, uh,
- 7:09Speaker 3: forward in that, you know, throwing side, I definitely need
- 7:12Speaker 3: to improve, man. Uh, I'm definitely working to get that
- 7:16Speaker 3: and definitely to throw harder. I think if I figure
- 7:19Speaker 3: that out, I think I'm going to be a very
- 7:20Speaker 3: good catcher. I just need to start throwing a little
- 7:24Speaker 3: harder and a little more accurate. I think it's going
- 7:26Speaker 3: to be a different story.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So let's talk about base stealers, potential base stealers. You
- 7:31Speaker 1: threw out one guy this year. Now, after the offseason,
- 7:36Speaker 1: the season before, you had cleanup surgery on your elbow.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And I remember you were telling me, you couldn't get
- 7:42Speaker 1: the ball in the proper position to throw. So what
- 7:45Speaker 1: do you think the issues are now? Is it physical
- 7:47Speaker 1: or is it technique? How do you try to fix that?
- 7:51Speaker 3: I think you just actually learn how to throw. Personally,
- 7:57Speaker 3: I never really worked on my arm. I did not
- 8:00Speaker 3: struggle much before the big leagues, so I didn't put
- 8:04Speaker 3: emphasis on that. All my emphasis was on framing, blocking, hitting, running.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But these past two years, you know, that's when you struggle,
- 8:15Speaker 3: you know, you got to find a way to get better.
- 8:17Speaker 3: So that's what I'm trying to do. I think just
- 8:20Speaker 3: basically learning how to throw, you know, like right now,
- 8:24Speaker 3: I'm trying to figure it out, you know, hopefully it
- 8:27Speaker 3: can get better.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And if it doesn't, man, you just got to find
- 8:30Speaker 2: a way. So I would say just learning how to
- 8:33Speaker 2: throw is the answer, honestly.
- 8:37Speaker 1: So tell me about where you go to work on that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I know You can go to different places to specialize
- 8:44Speaker 1: in your pop, as they say. And I recall as
- 8:48Speaker 1: a minor leader, I think we've talked about it before,
- 8:51Speaker 1: like you had to renovate the way you approached your
- 8:54Speaker 1: at-bats at the plate in terms of stance. I know
- 8:57Speaker 1: you sort of renovated your whole defense. Your career, you've
- 9:00Speaker 1: had to work to get to this point. So where
- 9:02Speaker 1: does the work start now in trying to tackle that
- 9:05Speaker 1: issue of throwing guys out?
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that word start, like, it literally started right now.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I started my program this Monday. I'm going to continue
- 9:16Speaker 3: to work on that. I think it's just, like, you
- 9:19Speaker 3: got to figure it out, man.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Like, it don't matter how you do it.
- 9:22Speaker 3: You know, I try to figure it out in every way.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You know, I hit it and I figure out my stance,
- 9:27Speaker 3: you know, how I feel comfortable. I think I got
- 9:29Speaker 3: to find the right way to throw a second.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You know, I feel comfortable. I think it's just... You know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and it takes a toll mentally, you know, like you
- 9:38Speaker 2: struggle with that. So you put extra pressure.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I think I've been super pressure about it because, you know, honestly,
- 9:44Speaker 3: that's the only thing I feel like I struggle with.
- 9:46Speaker 3: You know, I don't I don't really like do a
- 9:49Speaker 3: lot of pass balls. I don't really miss a lot
- 9:51Speaker 3: of blocks. So I think, you know, going about it,
- 9:54Speaker 3: you know, since now that we're going to have.
- 9:56Speaker 2: A lot of time to get better, you know, with
- 9:59Speaker 2: the lockdown and everything. I'm going to put a lot
- 10:01Speaker 2: of work on that. And, you know, like I said,
- 10:04Speaker 2: I'm hoping that it's going to get better for this year.
- 10:07Speaker 1: How much of a mental toll does that take? Because
- 10:09Speaker 1: as a catcher, you've got a million things to think about.
- 10:12Speaker 1: The workday starts early. I know you guys are in
- 10:15Speaker 1: meetings and then you've got other stuff to work on.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Is that in the back of your mind when you
- 10:20Speaker 1: know you're having issues with that one piece of your game?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, let me put it like this. If
- 10:26Speaker 2: you can't get spin.
- 10:28Speaker 3: It means all the fast of the scene just because
- 10:31Speaker 3: you're looking for it.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So it's the same thing when I'm catching.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Like, I try to focus so much about throwing that
- 10:37Speaker 3: sometimes I forget about, like, the framing a little bit
- 10:40Speaker 3: just because I'm so focused on that because that's basically
- 10:44Speaker 3: the most other thing that I struggle with, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 3: is throwing. So it's just like, like I say, mentally,
- 10:51Speaker 3: you put a little doubt to yourself just for not
- 10:54Speaker 3: being able to do it. And that, you know, like
- 10:56Speaker 3: that pressure adds up, you know, when I'm beating on
- 10:58Speaker 3: the field pressure as much as when I do.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Catch him to throw somebody else.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I would rather like get 20 curve balls in the
- 11:07Speaker 3: delante than, you know, think about throwing, you know what
- 11:11Speaker 3: I mean? Like, it's just, I put a little extra
- 11:13Speaker 3: pressure on myself when I throw, but Like I said, I.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Just need to work to get better.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So, Yvonne, you guys are stacked with talent at the
- 11:25Speaker 1: catching position, right? You got you, you got Pajes, you
- 11:30Speaker 1: got Bernal, you got Crooks, you got Rodriguez coming up.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I'm just curious, with all that talent, you guys are,
- 11:39Speaker 1: the goal is to win for the team, but there's
- 11:41Speaker 1: also competition, too. How do you manage that, knowing all
- 11:45Speaker 1: these guys want to catch, you want to catch because
- 11:47Speaker 1: you love catching? How do you manage that? Because it
- 11:50Speaker 1: seems like you guys are all pulling together, which I
- 11:53Speaker 1: think is a little unusual. How do you manage that?
- 11:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, when you build culture and
- 11:59Speaker 3: you build friendship, I.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Mean, you want to support all your teammates.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, I believe, like,
- 12:08Speaker 3: whoever does the job should earn the opportunities, you know.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I feel like I haven't earned a job, and I'm
- 12:14Speaker 3: not lying if I don't cash. When I earn, we
- 12:18Speaker 3: got to look at that. Just support your teammates. We
- 12:24Speaker 3: got great guys like Pat Harris, troops. We all support
- 12:28Speaker 3: each other, don't matter how.
- 12:29Speaker 2: If you need anything, we're going to be there for you.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's just going at the long run.
- 12:37Speaker 2: It's just not about me. It's not about... Bernal is
- 12:42Speaker 2: not about all the guys.
- 12:43Speaker 3: It's about winning, and it's about caring about your teammates
- 12:46Speaker 3: and pushing everybody to get better. I think it's all
- 12:48Speaker 3: about that, and I don't think there's any negative around
- 12:53Speaker 3: any of us.
- 12:54Speaker 2: We all push to get better.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. I've seen it firsthand. You got to admit,
- 13:00Speaker 1: Bernal was impressive since he was called up. When you
- 13:04Speaker 1: look at that young guy, and you forget how young
- 13:06Speaker 1: he is, he did a lot of things the right way.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Tell me what impressed Bernal or what impressed you about
- 13:14Speaker 1: what Bernal was able to show he can do.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm very impressed with just the ability
- 13:20Speaker 2: to show me to the big leagues and be good
- 13:23Speaker 2: real quick. He puts really good numbers right away.
- 13:28Speaker 3: That thing is hard to do. You see guys that
- 13:32Speaker 3: have great careers in the minor leagues and come to the.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Big leagues and struggle. I think mentally it's hard to just...
- 13:39Speaker 2: And then also... lead the pitch with that. You know,
- 13:42Speaker 2: we got veterans, we got young guys.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And he did a really good job with that, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 3: hitting with scoring position. I think he did every single
- 13:54Speaker 3: little thing good. Even the throwing, he throws really hard second,
- 13:57Speaker 3: you know. He did everything good, and I'm very impressed
- 14:00Speaker 3: with the.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Things he did.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Now, you guys had Yachty around a lot this year.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Tell me, because I see Yachty working with you guys.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I see him in the video room. Tell me what
- 14:11Speaker 1: it's like working with Yachty. What does he tell, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 1: the guys who were trying to get to where he
- 14:16Speaker 1: was as a catcher? What does he share with you?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Man, he definitely shared the secret sauce, you know what
- 14:22Speaker 2: I mean? Like, he got all the experience, he got
- 14:25Speaker 2: all the experience, and he cares.
- 14:28Speaker 4: He really cares.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I have so much respect for this guy just because,
- 14:33Speaker 3: you know, when I was coming on the minor leagues,
- 14:35Speaker 3: he was every day working with us 7 a.m. early work, like,
- 14:39Speaker 3: He would already have, I don't know, 12 years in
- 14:41Speaker 3: the big leagues, 10 years in the big leagues. And
- 14:43Speaker 3: he was there with us, helping us, you know, like
- 14:46Speaker 3: teaching us details, fundamentals.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And I think that's something I.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Respect a lot just because he really cares about the
- 14:54Speaker 3: team and he really cared about who was going to
- 14:56Speaker 3: take his spot or the people coming up. And I
- 14:58Speaker 3: think that deserves so much respect because, you know, most
- 15:02Speaker 3: guys just care about what they're doing, minding their own.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Business, which is fine.
- 15:07Speaker 3: But when you have guys like that, that really care,
- 15:10Speaker 3: that's when you know they have the Hall of Fame
- 15:12Speaker 3: career that they have. And they care about all the
- 15:15Speaker 3: pictures that they had in the past. So I think
- 15:18Speaker 3: that deserves so much respect.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Is there an intimidation factor when you're working with Yachty?
- 15:25Speaker 1: I mean, especially if you haven't worked with him in
- 15:27Speaker 1: the past. I know he's a good dude, but it's Yachty.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Tell me, as a young player, you're not intimidated by
- 15:34Speaker 1: having a guy like that around.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I mean, the first year I was, the relationship got
- 15:40Speaker 3: better and.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Everything got better.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And, you know, I feel like if you're young, you
- 15:47Speaker 3: should ask him questions. He likes, he loves talking about baseball.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I think that's one of the reasons why he plays
- 15:53Speaker 3: so much baseball. And he still wants to be in baseball.
- 15:55Speaker 3: So he loves this sport. He enjoys helping out everybody.
- 15:59Speaker 3: And I think it's, you know, it's cool to have
- 16:01Speaker 3: him around.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Hey, everybody.
- 16:04Speaker 5: It's the best time of the year for sports right now.
- 16:07Speaker 5: You got the NFL. You got the NBA about to start.
- 16:10Speaker 5: You got college football. You got hockey going on here.
- 16:14Speaker 5: And the best part of all, you got the MLB playoffs.
- 16:17Speaker 5: So if you want great seats to the LCS and
- 16:20Speaker 5: then the World Series, wherever that is, go to SeatGeek.
- 16:22Speaker 5: I've used SeatGeek many times for college football tickets, concert tickets.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I don't really need it for baseball. I got that
- 16:28Speaker 5: gold card. But for you out there, use SeatGeek for
- 16:31Speaker 5: any playoff needs that you might have.
- 16:33Speaker 6: Yeah, AJ, the best deals are on SeatGeek. With over

- 17:01Speaker 6: use it later.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Gracias, SeatGeek.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you this because I think I
- 17:05Speaker 1: asked you about it maybe once or twice during the
- 17:07Speaker 1: regular season. But you're a guy who's an athlete, right?
- 17:10Speaker 1: You see some catchers, maybe they're not as athletic as
- 17:14Speaker 1: other guys. So based on the fact that there's so
- 17:17Speaker 1: many catchers and you want to catch, so I'm stipulating
- 17:20Speaker 1: you love being behind the plate. I'll ask you about
- 17:22Speaker 1: that in a minute. But you could play outfield. You
- 17:26Speaker 1: could play first base. Has anyone talked to you about
- 17:29Speaker 1: maybe starting to do some of that stuff just in
- 17:32Speaker 1: case they need flexibility or you're catching?
- 17:37Speaker 2: I mean, nobody has talked to me about anything.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You know, I see myself as a catcher just because,
- 17:43Speaker 3: like I say, all I show is throwing. So if
- 17:46Speaker 3: I can get that good, you know, I feel like
- 17:48Speaker 3: I can be really good. You know, I can be
- 17:50Speaker 3: really good offensively as a catcher. I can be really
- 17:52Speaker 3: good defensively as a catcher. All the things I've shown
- 17:55Speaker 3: is that. You know, like I said, I'm working towards it.
- 17:58Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, if things don't
- 18:01Speaker 3: work out, you know, you got to find a way
- 18:02Speaker 3: to just stick in the big leagues, no matter how.
- 18:06Speaker 2: You know, I'm not.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Saying I can't play under a position, but I'm open
- 18:09Speaker 3: to it. I'm open to play wherever the team wants
- 18:11Speaker 3: me to play. You know, I already tried the outfield.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I don't think it was bad. You know, I think
- 18:16Speaker 3: I got, I caught all the fly balls, but it
- 18:18Speaker 3: was definitely scary. You know, I never played outfield since
- 18:22Speaker 3: I was like.
- 18:22Speaker 2: 15 years old. So, yeah. You know, it's– the first
- 18:26Speaker 2: game I was definitely so nervous. It was crazy.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they put you out there. You made
- 18:31Speaker 1: the plays. I was just wondering about that. But you've
- 18:35Speaker 1: always said, I want to catch. What is it about
- 18:38Speaker 1: catching that you love? Like, because let's be honest, like,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you've got to work your butt off in that position.
- 18:44Speaker 1: What do you love about it?
- 18:46Speaker 3: Man, I just feel like I'm, you know, I'm like–
- 18:50Speaker 3: I like suffering, you know, like getting hit.
- 18:52Speaker 2: You know, I always been that way. You know, like,
- 18:56Speaker 2: I like all these kind of, like, the hard things.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I really enjoy the easy things. I think all the
- 19:03Speaker 2: hard things come with, like, with work.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I feel like all I have shifted my career is
- 19:08Speaker 3: just because, like, I did that, you know. And there's, like,
- 19:12Speaker 3: there was always people calling me out on everything I do.
- 19:14Speaker 3: So I think that's what I enjoy. You know, people
- 19:16Speaker 3: call me out on the throwing side, saying that I
- 19:19Speaker 3: can't catch, that I can't throw a ball. You know,
- 19:21Speaker 3: I just continue to build for myself and I know
- 19:23Speaker 3: I can achieve this goal in the future.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So you're saying when you hear the negativity that fuels you,
- 19:32Speaker 1: you get something?
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yeah, 100%.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Like, I always say, man, in Panama, nobody, like, said
- 19:39Speaker 3: I was going to make it, even pro, you know. So, like,
- 19:42Speaker 3: scouts invited me to tryouts just so I can.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Catch the bullpen for the other guys. That's how it
- 19:47Speaker 2: was over here.
- 19:48Speaker 3: So, I think that that's what mentally it really helped
- 19:51Speaker 3: me like push get better so that's how I really
- 19:54Speaker 3: like that's it that fuels me to you know all
- 19:58Speaker 3: the hate all the stuff it's just like bang but
- 20:01Speaker 3: if I do it right, then what you're going to
- 20:02Speaker 3: say about, you know what I mean?
- 20:04Speaker 2: And, but I do not care what people say.
- 20:06Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 20:06Speaker 2: It's just like, Oh, you say that, but I'm going
- 20:08Speaker 2: to prove you wrong. That's it.
- 20:09Speaker 3: But I do not care what anybody says.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Sure.
- 20:13Speaker 1: It's motivation. All right. So you handle a pitching staff
- 20:17Speaker 1: that has some young pitchers in it. I think they
- 20:20Speaker 1: put the starting rotation in particular, very solid this year.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So I'm going to put you on the spot. Understanding
- 20:26Speaker 1: that stuff is just one part of pitching, right? Like,
- 20:30Speaker 1: You can have the best stuff in the world and
- 20:32Speaker 1: not have location or not be able to think your
- 20:35Speaker 1: way through it. But in terms of stuff, which starter
- 20:39Speaker 1: on the Cardinals has the best stuff?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Starting on the Cardinals with best stuff. Uh, you know,
- 20:49Speaker 2: I like, I.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Like Michael McGreevy just because like the command wise, all
- 20:56Speaker 3: of that, uh, It's tough.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Leahy got good breaking balls. I think that's really good stuff.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Leahy got a good year.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think Leahy is one of the ones with nasty
- 21:06Speaker 3: stuff that I like catching. I caught him the last
- 21:09Speaker 3: start of the year, so got him once, and I
- 21:11Speaker 3: was like, oh, man, I understand why he's having such
- 21:14Speaker 3: a good year.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Leahy always wanted to start. The game was shot. He
- 21:18Speaker 1: was really good this year. I think a lot of
- 21:21Speaker 1: people don't understand him. On the bump, on the mound,
- 21:24Speaker 1: he's a competitor, but he's so quiet. Like, I don't
- 21:28Speaker 1: think people understand that you can be a quiet guy
- 21:31Speaker 1: in the clubhouse and be nasty on the mound. Explain
- 21:35Speaker 1: what it's like working with him because he is a
- 21:38Speaker 1: quiet guy.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been working with Ace since like 2019, you know, 2019.
- 21:47Speaker 3: And he's been, he's always been the same guy, quiet guy.
- 21:50Speaker 3: You know, I've never, don't really talk much. I'm always
- 21:53Speaker 3: asking him questions.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Hey, what's up, bro? You know, how you feel?
- 21:57Speaker 3: I can get some words out of him, but it
- 21:59Speaker 3: doesn't matter the way you.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Are outside the field.
- 22:03Speaker 3: All that matters is the way you go about your
- 22:05Speaker 3: business in there, the way you show up and you work.
- 22:10Speaker 3: You see him every day working with CeCe in the
- 22:13Speaker 3: training room, every day showing up. And he's just not,
- 22:16Speaker 3: not just, he's not lucky. He put the work out
- 22:19Speaker 3: there too. So, you know, being quiet and it don't matter.
- 22:22Speaker 3: It don't, it don't really matter. Just gotta go out
- 22:24Speaker 3: there and, you know, act like a cat, like a cat,
- 22:26Speaker 3: like a dog.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Not like a cat, like a dog.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I got you like a dog. You can say cat
- 22:32Speaker 1: cause I'm the cat. Last thing. And I don't think
- 22:35Speaker 1: I've ever asked you this. What do you do? Like
- 22:38Speaker 1: you got time in the off season. I know you're training.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I know you're working. What do you do for fun?
- 22:43Speaker 1: What does Yvonne Herrera do for fun in the offseason? Like,
- 22:46Speaker 1: what's a fun day for you?
- 22:50Speaker 2: Fun day for me is, you know, maybe go to
- 22:54Speaker 2: the beach, maybe on the weekend.
- 22:57Speaker 3: And, you know, I like doing all kind of like,
- 23:02Speaker 3: like fighting, honestly, you know. I love doing that. I
- 23:06Speaker 3: think that's my fun. I think, like I said, I like,
- 23:09Speaker 3: I like feeling pain. So I like, Just, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 3: getting here a little bit. It's just like, that's my OV.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Wait, so you're saying like mixed martial arts stuff you do?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I like doing that. It's fun. It's really fun.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Just like slow, you know, I don't go crazy, you know,
- 23:26Speaker 3: I'm not trying to get hurt, but it's very fun
- 23:28Speaker 3: to me.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Well, that also gives people something to think about next
- 23:33Speaker 1: time they decide to plunk you with a pitch in
- 23:35Speaker 1: the ribs that you're an MMA guy, right?
- 23:39Speaker 3: I don't really like fighting people, but if I have
- 23:42Speaker 3: to do it, then, you know, I'd just do it.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yvonne, we appreciate the visit. It's fun watching you. It's
- 23:50Speaker 1: fun dealing with you during the season, seen in the clubhouse.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Everybody loves Yvonne Herrera. Thanks for coming on. I do
- 23:56Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, and welcome to another episode addition of Cardinal Territory,
- 24:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn, and a
- 24:14Speaker 1: special guest, 12-game winner Andre Palante is joining us. Hello, Andre.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on. I know these guys are
- 24:22Speaker 1: your former teammates, so we're hoping it's a pitcher's roundtable,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but I'm going to start with a question, and then
- 24:28Speaker 1: we'll rotate a little bit. My first question, Andre, is this.
- 24:33Speaker 1: You won 12 games, tip of the cap to you.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You had an ERA of, what, 3.8? Three, if I
- 24:40Speaker 1: could read my chicken scratch here. Really solid numbers. It
- 24:45Speaker 1: would have been better to get a couple of rough
- 24:47Speaker 1: starts toward the end of the season. But overall, really good.
- 24:50Speaker 1: What was your main takeaway, would you say, from this
- 24:54Speaker 1: season where it seems like you really.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Came into your own?
- 24:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it really has to do with, you know,
- 25:00Speaker 7: understanding myself as a pitcher. Just kind of understanding, like,
- 25:04Speaker 7: you know, these are my strengths.
- 25:06Speaker 4: This is what I do really well.
- 25:08Speaker 7: And then how to complement those and not letting anything
- 25:12Speaker 7: kind of take me out of that, regardless of whether
- 25:14Speaker 7: it's results-based, whether it's scouting report-based, whatever that is, really
- 25:18Speaker 7: just understanding who I am as a pitcher and really
- 25:20Speaker 7: just staying committed to that.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Look, Dre, you got to get out of here early
- 25:28Speaker 1: at some point, so go ahead. Give them some questions.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Dre, I grew a gym.
- 25:34Speaker 8: Awesome year, man. Fun to watch you guys. We talk
- 25:38Speaker 8: about it a lot on here. The style of baseball
- 25:40Speaker 8: you guys played was really fun to watch. Solid defense,
- 25:43Speaker 8: starting pitching. Pitching overall, you guys dealt with some adversity,
- 25:46Speaker 8: with some injuries, with a lot of things. But you
- 25:52Speaker 8: guys powered through and beat expectations. So talk to me
- 25:55Speaker 8: a little bit about the culture that you guys are
- 25:57Speaker 8: building and how you guys kind of eliminated some of
- 26:00Speaker 8: that outside noise to have the successful year that you have.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I think as a whole, as a team,
- 26:07Speaker 7: it was so awesome to see a lot of the
- 26:08Speaker 7: younger guys come up and perform well. And, you know,
- 26:11Speaker 7: you see some guys live up to their potential, especially like,
- 26:14Speaker 7: you know, Jay Walk having as great of a year
- 26:16Speaker 7: as he had, you know, seeing, you know, just a
- 26:19Speaker 7: lot of guys come out and really show out and
- 26:21Speaker 7: show what they're capable of.
- 26:22Speaker 9: And there's a lot to be excited for with the Cardinals.
- 26:24Speaker 9: You know, these guys are good.
- 26:25Speaker 1: We're all really good.
- 26:26Speaker 7: And being able to show a glimpse of that's obviously great. Pitchers,
- 26:30Speaker 7: I mean, like McGreevy showing up, showing like, you know, he's,
- 26:34Speaker 7: He knows who he is so well. He's so consistent.
- 26:37Speaker 7: So having him come up, get a full season on
- 26:39Speaker 7: Irv's ball was awesome to really see.
- 26:42Speaker 8: So you've been through a little bit of up and down, right?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Everybody has it.
- 26:48Speaker 8: I think unfairly Major League Baseball players catch flack for
- 26:54Speaker 8: not being perfect every year, right? I took a similar
- 26:58Speaker 8: career path, so I feel like I can say this,
- 27:00Speaker 8: and I don't think you're going to take take offense
- 27:02Speaker 8: to this, but last year wasn't the year you wanted
- 27:04Speaker 8: to have. You get another full year this year, you
- 27:07Speaker 8: switch up some usages and you have an awesome year.
- 27:11Speaker 8: Tell us a little bit about some of those adjustments
- 27:13Speaker 8: that you made, because I'm looking at some pitch usage,
- 27:16Speaker 8: you know, some spin adjustments, approach adjustments, you know, take
- 27:19Speaker 8: us through a couple of the things that your mindset,
- 27:22Speaker 8: you know, shifted toward for this year.
- 27:25Speaker 7: Yeah, so I think I really developed a clear understanding
- 27:28Speaker 7: of how I attack my hitters, you know, left-handed hitters,
- 27:32Speaker 7: right-handed hitters. To left-handed hitters, you know, I've got a
- 27:35Speaker 7: kind of cutty fastball that plays great up and into them. And,
- 27:39Speaker 7: you know, I kind of like I always knew that
- 27:41Speaker 7: was my strength, right? Like that's why I was in
- 27:42Speaker 7: the big leagues for the last five years, whatever it is.
- 27:45Speaker 7: That's been the core of my uniqueness and what's made
- 27:47Speaker 7: me really good. So I think like understanding that and,
- 27:51Speaker 7: you know, challenging myself to be the best pitcher I
- 27:53Speaker 7: can at that as well as developing supplemental stuff to that.
- 27:57Speaker 7: So to lefties with the up and in fastball, I
- 27:59Speaker 7: changed the mentality with my curveball, where when I was
- 28:02Speaker 7: in college, in the minors, that was always a put-away
- 28:05Speaker 7: pitch for me. I changed that mentality to be, okay,
- 28:08Speaker 7: this is a pitch I want to land for strikes
- 28:09Speaker 7: whenever I want, whenever I need to, in order to
- 28:12Speaker 7: get me.
- 28:12Speaker 9: Back in counts and keep hitters guessing.
- 28:15Speaker 7: As well as using more sliders and development of a changeup,
- 28:18Speaker 7: just giving more looks that can kind of take hitters
- 28:21Speaker 7: off that up and in spot, which I know is
- 28:23Speaker 7: my strength. And the righties, it was kind of like
- 28:26Speaker 7: the understanding of like, I never really had a true.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Identity with them.
- 28:29Speaker 7: I really struggled with them when I first came up
- 28:31Speaker 7: because I've kind of got that cutty fastball and the
- 28:34Speaker 7: slider and the curve ball, everything I threw moved away
- 28:36Speaker 7: from them. So it was really hitter easy for hitters to,
- 28:39Speaker 7: you know, develop an approach against me.
- 28:40Speaker 9: And, um, you know, they, they hit me really well.
- 28:42Speaker 7: And so I kind of had the development of the
- 28:45Speaker 7: two seam, which both you and Lance were there for, uh,
- 28:47Speaker 7: you know, I brought it up, uh, with, you know,
- 28:50Speaker 7: I almost headshot some righties when I was first running
- 28:52Speaker 7: that pitch, but, uh, This last year, I felt like
- 28:55Speaker 7: I really honed in the command of that, and it
- 28:57Speaker 7: was really consistent for me.
- 28:58Speaker 9: But I developed basically the basis of my game plan
- 29:01Speaker 9: is my best pitch varieties is a slider down and away.
- 29:03Speaker 9: It's a pitch I need to execute, but it's a.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Really good pitch.
- 29:07Speaker 9: And then what can I do to complement that?
- 29:08Speaker 7: And that was the development of the two-seam fastball, which
- 29:10Speaker 7: I would throw up and in, the curveball, which I
- 29:12Speaker 7: would land for strikes to slow them down when I'm
- 29:14Speaker 7: not sure if they're hunting between the.
- 29:16Speaker 9: Two of those, as well as how to use my
- 29:17Speaker 9: forcing a bit better.
- 29:20Speaker 8: So some of the stuff that you did, you know
- 29:22Speaker 8: you had a few less starts this year just with
- 29:25Speaker 8: a short time on the IL but with 300 less
- 29:27Speaker 8: overall pitches you didn't completely eliminate your four seamer to
- 29:31Speaker 8: righties but you limited a lot you know just over
- 29:34Speaker 8: 129 starts your sinker usage tracked and a like you
- 29:40Speaker 8: probably used a little bit more of those to to
- 29:42Speaker 8: righties and then it looks like your slider usage also
- 29:47Speaker 8: shifted up so is that kind of that uh you
- 29:50Speaker 8: know know your strength uses that you're talking about was
- 29:52Speaker 8: the four seamer you know down in a way was
- 29:55Speaker 8: that kind of a pitch that you said hey what
- 29:57Speaker 8: am i doing giving up hits on this with my
- 29:58Speaker 8: sinker it's going to be so much better down there.
- 30:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I think the sinker elevates the slider
- 30:05Speaker 7: a lot more, right? I think they tunnel better. Like
- 30:08Speaker 7: the foreseam and the slider, the tunnel is basically the same.
- 30:12Speaker 7: You can kind of take the same swing at either
- 30:14Speaker 7: one of them and make the adjustment hit both. Whereas
- 30:17Speaker 7: the sinker, it tunnels, but it also has got so
- 30:19Speaker 7: much separation with the movement that it gets to a
- 30:23Speaker 7: different part of the zone. You have to swing at
- 30:25Speaker 7: it differently if you want to make good contact. So
- 30:28Speaker 7: that really just elevated it. So and then, yeah, with
- 30:30Speaker 7: understanding that my slider is my best pitch, regardless of
- 30:33Speaker 7: the scouting report, regardless of the situation, I'm going to
- 30:35Speaker 7: throw that to a hitter. That's where you saw the
- 30:37Speaker 7: increased uses there, as well as the foreseam was just
- 30:40Speaker 7: kind of like a just the pitch that got hit.
- 30:42Speaker 7: You know, it was just a pitch that did not
- 30:45Speaker 7: perform well to righties. So throwing that less is always
- 30:47Speaker 7: better when it's a pitch that doesn't perform. But I
- 30:49Speaker 7: think I learned that it's best in like, you know,
- 30:51Speaker 7: limit damage counts when guys are looking for either of
- 30:55Speaker 7: the two.
- 30:55Speaker 9: And I can kind of surprise them kind of like
- 30:57Speaker 9: a cutter.

- 31:57Speaker 6: about them. Please support our show and let them know
- 31:59Speaker 6: we sent you.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Lance in 2024.
- 32:02Speaker 8: Did you think that you would now later hear Andre
- 32:06Speaker 8: Palante talking about pitch tumbling?
- 32:08Speaker 1: Did he just say that?
- 32:10Speaker 4: No, there's a one time we had to talk about it,
- 32:12Speaker 4: chasing a sweeper. So there was times where, The beautiful
- 32:18Speaker 4: brain of Andre also got him in trouble early on
- 32:21Speaker 4: in his career because he is such a perfectionist. He
- 32:26Speaker 4: wants to be great. But what he learned and what
- 32:28Speaker 4: we're talking about now is he's figured out who he is,
- 32:30Speaker 4: what stuff plays for him, and now he's slowly adding
- 32:34Speaker 4: on to what he does well, which is where the split, a.k.a.
- 32:38Speaker 4: kick change, is coming into play and the things that
- 32:41Speaker 4: he's adding on to him. And I think that what
- 32:43Speaker 4: we've talked about in our past is you've eliminated the
- 32:46Speaker 4: walks because you know who you are now too, which
- 32:49Speaker 4: is why I think our numbers were even better this year.
- 32:51Speaker 4: So where do you think you're at on that now
- 32:53Speaker 4: that you're not chasing things that you're physically not capable
- 32:57Speaker 4: of doing with your arm slot and you're listening and
- 33:01Speaker 4: doing what we talked about from the get-go is know
- 33:03Speaker 4: who you are. So you know how to attack hitters.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:07Speaker 7: I mean, you know, it's easy to just say, Oh,
- 33:09Speaker 7: I should have listened to Lance my whole life. Um, but, uh,
- 33:13Speaker 7: you know, maybe I should have maybe Lance and Kyle
- 33:16Speaker 7: a little bit more, but I had to tune.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Out a lot of the BS.
- 33:19Speaker 7: So, but you know, yeah, I mean, definitely, like you said,
- 33:23Speaker 7: tunneling super important, like learning what pitches cooperates was a
- 33:26Speaker 7: big deal for last year. And hopefully, you know, keep
- 33:30Speaker 7: taking on that, keep building on that and have more
- 33:32Speaker 7: success in the future.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Before we let Kyle go, I wanted to ask you,
- 33:38Speaker 1: so these guys were both your teammates, right? Both of them,
- 33:42Speaker 1: Chopped full of pitching wisdom. So tell me who was
- 33:45Speaker 1: a better teammate and who was a better guy to
- 33:48Speaker 1: go ask for information. That's what I want to know.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Throw somewhere under the bus.
- 33:54Speaker 4: He wants you to throw somewhere under the bus. I'm
- 33:58Speaker 4: going to take it because I know how this goes.
- 34:01Speaker 4: Kyle was a good cop. I was a bad cop.
- 34:04Speaker 4: I told Dre to get his head out of his ass.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Kyle patted Dre on the ass. So that was our
- 34:09Speaker 4: That was our role. Those were our roles as veterans
- 34:12Speaker 4: at our time.
- 34:14Speaker 9: Yeah, one of them was like, yeah, you know, Andre,
- 34:16Speaker 9: I really believe in you. You're going to figure this out.
- 34:19Speaker 4: You're great.
- 34:19Speaker 7: Your girlfriend's amazing. I don't know why you guys aren't
- 34:21Speaker 7: engaged yet. Like, you're awesome. Another person was clapping apple
- 34:26Speaker 7: pie out of my hands and telling me to get
- 34:29Speaker 7: lost on the bus or go bring him snacks or something.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Go bring him a new dress.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Shit is in the back. I think I told you
- 34:35Speaker 4: that shit is in the back one time. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 9: Yeah, you guys can decide for who I'm talking about.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Well, let's be honest. There's always that one guy on
- 34:44Speaker 4: each team, and Kyle knows that, that shows up and
- 34:47Speaker 4: thinks they've got 10-5. I mean, and Dre did it
- 34:50Speaker 4: to himself. I remember he got mouthy like day three
- 34:52Speaker 4: of spring training, and Kyle goes, oh my God, this
- 34:56Speaker 4: kid has no idea what he just started doing.
- 35:00Speaker 8: But I was thinking of day one. And so, so
- 35:03Speaker 8: people understand 10, five, right? You're talking 10 year service time,
- 35:06Speaker 8: five with one team. Andre, when you get that, what
- 35:09Speaker 8: can't happen?
- 35:13Speaker 4: Um, you can't be, I want somebody who doesn't know
- 35:15Speaker 4: what it entails. I love that. I've been chasing something.
- 35:18Speaker 4: He doesn't know what it gives you. It means you
- 35:20Speaker 4: can't get treated without your approval.
- 35:22Speaker 8: You got no trade clause and five years to get
- 35:24Speaker 8: you no option. So you're not to.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Five years yet.
- 35:27Speaker 4: So watch yourself. All right, so.
- 35:31Speaker 8: Anyways, yeah, I think it was day one or day
- 35:33Speaker 8: two that between, I think Burley was a little bit
- 35:38Speaker 8: less comfortable the first week, but Burley and Lance have
- 35:40Speaker 8: a lot of similarities there. But I'm pretty sure Andre
- 35:43Speaker 8: saw Lance and I coming to spring training, and he
- 35:46Speaker 8: just wanted to stir the pot with a couple other
- 35:49Speaker 8: fellow starters right out of the gate. And Lance and
- 35:51Speaker 8: I had lockers right there in the corner on the
- 35:53Speaker 8: way to everything. So Andre had nowhere to go. except
- 35:58Speaker 8: walk right past us every time.
- 36:00Speaker 1: It was great. All right.
- 36:01Speaker 4: One thing you know about Andre is he cannot not
- 36:06Speaker 4: say something if it's on his brain. So we learned
- 36:08Speaker 4: that real quick and that, that made good fun. I
- 36:11Speaker 4: really did. So I enjoyed it.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. All right.
- 36:16Speaker 8: I got to run, but I got one more question
- 36:18Speaker 8: and then I'm sure Lance will go into tunneling on this,
- 36:21Speaker 8: but I want to talk about the kick change because
- 36:24Speaker 8: I see some to lefties and I don't see very
- 36:27Speaker 8: many to righties. Is that something that you plan to
- 36:31Speaker 8: work in? Because, you know, as we talked about with,
- 36:33Speaker 8: you know, not throwing a sweeper and how your release
- 36:36Speaker 8: point works with your pitches, your kick change and your
- 36:40Speaker 8: slider go opposite on the observed movement. So tell me
- 36:43Speaker 8: a little bit about your kick change and if there's
- 36:47Speaker 8: any more plans for it.
- 36:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, that was a pitch, you know, like
- 36:51Speaker 7: before I came out to spring, it was great. When
- 36:53Speaker 7: I got out to spring, completely forgot how to throw it.
- 36:57Speaker 7: I had no idea where it was going. The movement
- 36:58Speaker 7: was wrong. The location was bad. And I kind of, like,
- 37:02Speaker 7: figured it out towards.
- 37:03Speaker 4: The beginning of the year.
- 37:04Speaker 9: I thought I lost it, like, the middle of the year.
- 37:06Speaker 7: You know, there's even clips, like, I threw one in Cincinnati,
- 37:10Speaker 7: and it moved the wrong way. It cut, and the hitter,
- 37:13Speaker 7: De La Cruz, swung and missed at it. The catcher
- 37:15Speaker 7: completely whipped on it and hit the umpire right in
- 37:17Speaker 7: the face. So part of it was just, like, trying
- 37:20Speaker 7: to develop, like, how do I get this pitch more consistent?
- 37:24Speaker 7: which about the halfway point of the year and on,
- 37:26Speaker 7: it was really good, very consistent. And then it just
- 37:29Speaker 7: became about a comfortability thing. I don't preset the kick change,
- 37:33Speaker 7: and it's a weird grip. So for me to, like,
- 37:35Speaker 7: try and dig in and get it, like, my whole
- 37:37Speaker 7: posture changes. I'm pretty sure everyone on the planet can
- 37:39Speaker 7: tell when I'm going.
- 37:40Speaker 1: To throw it.
- 37:42Speaker 9: But that's the goal for this season is, yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Oh, my God, oh, my God, he called it. He
- 37:48Speaker 1: called it.
- 37:48Speaker 4: It's like a kid throwing it and literally, yeah, I
- 37:51Speaker 4: like that one. First slider of the day.
- 37:55Speaker 7: Um, but yeah, so the goal is to preset that.
- 37:57Speaker 7: So that way there's a little bit more deception with it.
- 38:00Speaker 7: So I can use it with guys in base and
- 38:02Speaker 7: I was using with guys in base towards the end
- 38:03Speaker 7: of the year anyways. But, um, yeah, specifically righties. I
- 38:06Speaker 7: threw one when I was coming back from a live
- 38:09Speaker 7: BP and threw it to Pedro and it was probably
- 38:11Speaker 7: the best one I've ever thrown in my life. Um,
- 38:13Speaker 7: so there's definitely plans, uh, to use it more, especially
- 38:16Speaker 7: to righties. Cause it's one of the highest like missed
- 38:17Speaker 7: pitches in the league is like I change up right on.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:20Speaker 7: Um, so if I, yeah, that's definitely a goal for
- 38:22Speaker 7: my mind to get that into more usage.
- 38:26Speaker 8: All right, well, my only tip for you, Jim, I'm
- 38:29Speaker 8: going to have to run, so I'm going to give
- 38:31Speaker 8: Andre my only unsolicited tip he didn't ask for. I'm
- 38:34Speaker 8: going to tell him anyways. When you get to spring,
- 38:37Speaker 8: I know last spring training was a little different. You
- 38:39Speaker 8: were coming off of a down year. You wanted to
- 38:41Speaker 8: kind of prove the adjustments you made, so the kick
- 38:44Speaker 8: change probably wasn't a priority. I would suggest to you
- 38:46Speaker 8: when you get to spring this year, every at-bat, whether
- 38:49Speaker 8: live BP or in the game, use a kick change
- 38:52Speaker 8: before you use your spins. I did it about every
- 38:55Speaker 8: year the first couple starts to make sure that my
- 38:57Speaker 8: changeup was on point when I went into the year.
- 38:59Speaker 1: It's a field pitch, right?
- 39:00Speaker 8: As you now know, it's a big-time field pitch. Not
- 39:03Speaker 8: like slide or set and forget it. Throw that kick
- 39:06Speaker 8: change every at-bat before you throw your spin. That thing
- 39:09Speaker 8: will be locked in by the time you get to
- 39:11Speaker 8: the end of March. Or as Jim says, it's going
- 39:12Speaker 8: to be the end of July because of the lockout.
- 39:14Speaker 8: So watch out for his negativity the rest of the
- 39:16Speaker 8: time here. But he doesn't think you guys are going
- 39:18Speaker 8: to even play. So I think the end of March...
- 39:21Speaker 8: You'll be ready for the season. But Dre, appreciate your time.
- 39:26Speaker 8: Sorry I got to run.
- 39:28Speaker 4: As always, call me a second if you got anything.
- 39:30Speaker 4: anything but appreciate you being here.
- 39:31Speaker 9: Bud appreciate it thank you give me.
- 39:33Speaker 1: See you kyle i'm kyle by the way it's not
- 39:35Speaker 1: telling the truth is i believe uh cooler heads will
- 39:38Speaker 1: prevail and they will eventually figure this thing out at
- 39:42Speaker 1: least that's what i'm hoping let me ask you this
- 39:44Speaker 1: uh the season you guys put together as a team
- 39:48Speaker 1: um You guys, I think, outperformed a lot of what
- 39:52Speaker 1: a lot of predictions were, what a lot of people
- 39:54Speaker 1: thought you guys could do. And I noticed even when
- 39:57Speaker 1: there was like a dry spell where you guys weren't
- 40:00Speaker 1: playing good, you guys bounced back. A lot of comebacks
- 40:03Speaker 1: and everything. Young team that really believed in itself. And
- 40:06Speaker 1: I'm just wondering, like, for the fans that don't get
- 40:10Speaker 1: to see it, because you guys are a tight-knit group,
- 40:12Speaker 1: who are the guys that are some of the leaders
- 40:15Speaker 1: in the clubhouse that maybe they might not It's just bad.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I think you get, you know, Burleys in there, you know,
- 40:22Speaker 1: Masons in there, Walkers. We get that. Give me some
- 40:26Speaker 1: guys who have a leadership role that maybe fans wouldn't
- 40:29Speaker 1: know about, guys that are not afraid to say something.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Just curious.
- 40:34Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, I think obviously you've got the main leaders, right?
- 40:38Speaker 9: And I think because we're all it's not like we
- 40:41Speaker 9: have a vocal leader.
- 40:42Speaker 7: It's not like someone goes up there and it's like,
- 40:44Speaker 7: all right guys, you know, here, now we, now we got,
- 40:46Speaker 7: now we go wherever, you know, wherever that would look
- 40:49Speaker 7: like or entail. But I just think, um, because no
- 40:52Speaker 7: one's feels uncomfortable. No one feels like they're below anyone.
- 40:55Speaker 7: No one feels like there's this hierarchy at all. Um, it,
- 40:59Speaker 7: it really feels like guys feel open or free to
- 41:02Speaker 7: just kind of be themselves or do what they feel
- 41:03Speaker 7: like they need to. And, um, I think, yeah, you,
- 41:06Speaker 7: you see that with just the comfortability, even like the
- 41:09Speaker 7: big moments, right. Um, Everyone's expecting the best of themselves. So, yeah,
- 41:15Speaker 7: I just think just kind of group buy-in and stuff
- 41:18Speaker 7: like that.
- 41:21Speaker 4: Would you say– well, I think most people would say
- 41:23Speaker 4: you guys outperformed, especially projections this year, right? I think
- 41:29Speaker 4: Gibby and I have always talked about, especially with Jim,
- 41:31Speaker 4: is we love the talent you guys had, and people
- 41:33Speaker 4: didn't realize how talented people are. So, obviously, this step
- 41:37Speaker 4: with Jordan and JJ coming up, You've got guys that
- 41:41Speaker 4: are taking those next steps. Talk about as a whole
- 41:44Speaker 4: what you think this group can do going in the
- 41:45Speaker 4: future as a core, and what are some things that
- 41:48Speaker 4: might prevail you guys to be a playoff contender next year?
- 41:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, you know, maybe I'm biased, and I'm
- 41:55Speaker 7: sure you're biased as well, but I think obviously having
- 41:58Speaker 7: a good starting pitching is the most important thing when
- 42:01Speaker 7: it comes to just overall success, and I think a
- 42:04Speaker 7: lot of what we saw this year from the McGreevy,
- 42:07Speaker 7: his consistency, he's always going to be consistent. You know,
- 42:09Speaker 7: he shows up every day the same. His stuff is
- 42:11Speaker 7: always moving the same. His command's great. You know, he's
- 42:15Speaker 7: going to be a rock. Just, you know, you always
- 42:16Speaker 7: know what you're going to get from McGreevy. I think
- 42:18Speaker 7: Leahy showed signs of, you know, how good he can be.
- 42:21Speaker 7: And I think when, you know, after having the workload spike,
- 42:24Speaker 7: he'll be a little bit more stronger, a little bit
- 42:26Speaker 7: more prepared. And I'll be able to keep like, you know,
- 42:29Speaker 7: what he gave up, like what, two runs or less
- 42:31Speaker 7: for like 12 straight starts in a row. Yeah, I
- 42:33Speaker 7: think that's something you can get starting to expect from him.
- 42:36Speaker 7: You know, like he's really good. His stuff's amazing. His
- 42:39Speaker 7: command's great.
- 42:40Speaker 2: He's a hard worker.
- 42:41Speaker 7: You know, it really starts with starting pitching for sure.
- 42:43Speaker 7: And that's probably because I'm biased. And then the core
- 42:46Speaker 7: of the lineup, I thought you really saw the strides.
- 42:47Speaker 7: You know, JJ's got such a consistent approach, you know,
- 42:51Speaker 7: his ability to kind of shrink the zone, make you
- 42:53Speaker 7: make pitches to him. and then take advantage of your mistakes.
- 42:56Speaker 7: I mean, he's a great hitter. He's going to have
- 42:58Speaker 7: success for a long time. Um, Jaywalk breaking out, showing
- 43:01Speaker 7: off the power, showing off everything we knew he was
- 43:03Speaker 7: capable of that we've all seen, but just kind of
- 43:06Speaker 7: like gets lost in the, you know, just the tough
- 43:09Speaker 7: kind of stress you had, you know, it's not easy.
- 43:12Speaker 7: It's not easy to learn how to do the biggest,
- 43:13Speaker 7: especially when you're 20, you know, was he 22 and 21?
- 43:17Speaker 7: And this last year was 23. Uh, most guys don't
- 43:19Speaker 7: even debut until way older than that still. Um, so
- 43:22Speaker 7: I think, uh, And Burley's been super consistent. Burley's a
- 43:26Speaker 7: great hitter. He's one of the best hitters in the league.
- 43:28Speaker 7: He doesn't get the respect he deserves for as good
- 43:31Speaker 7: as he is. And I think when you've got a
- 43:33Speaker 7: guy like that hitting in the middle of your lineup,
- 43:34Speaker 7: he can really elevate everyone else. So I think just
- 43:37Speaker 7: all that entails that we'll be very good coming up,
- 43:39Speaker 7: and there's a lot to be excited about.
- 43:43Speaker 1: With Libby, you know, he had a rough season. He
- 43:47Speaker 1: had a lot of good starts in there. I know
- 43:49Speaker 1: you guys are all tight in that starting rotation. How
- 43:52Speaker 1: tough was this season for him? Because I always say
- 43:55Speaker 1: on this show, it's like Libby territory because we're all
- 43:58Speaker 1: pro Libby because he's such a good guy. But what
- 44:02Speaker 1: did you see?
- 44:02Speaker 4: What did you guys talk about trying to get him
- 44:05Speaker 4: on track?
- 44:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, hey, trust me, I wish I wish
- 44:09Speaker 7: every one of us had the answer for everyone else,
- 44:11Speaker 7: because then you give it to them and then everyone's great.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 7: But we're always working at it. We're always paying attention.
- 44:17Speaker 7: We're watching the starts or seeing the work he puts in.
- 44:19Speaker 7: We're seeing all that. I think most importantly, you start
- 44:22Speaker 7: off with saying that, you know, I said it, I
- 44:24Speaker 7: want to say about three years ago, I was sitting
- 44:26Speaker 7: down and spring training and my roommate was John. And
- 44:30Speaker 7: it was like John and his, his wife and my
- 44:32Speaker 7: girlfriend and I were also in there. I'm like, if
- 44:34Speaker 7: Libby can't start in the big leagues, no one can.
- 44:36Speaker 7: Like his stuff is amazing. He's a great pitcher. He's
- 44:39Speaker 7: got the command. He's got the stuff. He's got the
- 44:41Speaker 7: work ethic, all this stuff. Like we all really believe
- 44:44Speaker 7: in him. And I especially believe in him a lot.
- 44:47Speaker 7: And I think, you know, It's just.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Part of the game.
- 44:50Speaker 7: I don't know if Gibby talked to me about it before.
- 44:55Speaker 7: I don't know if he's brought it up in this meeting,
- 44:56Speaker 7: but it was just like, you know, you have stress
- 44:59Speaker 7: in your career where you get exposed, you know, exposed
- 45:01Speaker 7: for either your weaknesses or, you know, sometimes it's mentality
- 45:05Speaker 7: that gets you away from what you're good at or
- 45:07Speaker 7: whatever that is.
- 45:08Speaker 9: And, you know, it's a tough thing to go through.
- 45:10Speaker 9: I felt for him.
- 45:11Speaker 7: You know, I just had gone through that like last year.
- 45:13Speaker 7: I know exactly where he was at mentally and with
- 45:16Speaker 7: a lot of that stuff or at least how I
- 45:17Speaker 7: felt about it. But I think, you know, if anyone's
- 45:20Speaker 7: going to work their tail off to get back and
- 45:22Speaker 7: get right, it's going to be him. I think, you know,
- 45:25Speaker 7: he's going to obviously work harder and like making the
- 45:27Speaker 7: spin more effective and all that stuff. And I'm excited
- 45:30Speaker 7: to see what he comes up with, because if I
- 45:32Speaker 7: know him, he's going to be almost unrecognizable with how
- 45:35Speaker 7: much work he's going to put in on himself this year.
- 45:40Speaker 4: No, that's a good way. I've comped him to you
- 45:42Speaker 4: in the past coming from last year to this year.
- 45:45Speaker 4: That's the hope. for him next year, in my opinion, is, hey,
- 45:49Speaker 4: you have your first year fully starting, right? You had
- 45:52Speaker 4: that the year before, had some success. League kind of
- 45:55Speaker 4: figures you out. You have some bad luck. You run
- 45:57Speaker 4: away from contact because every ground ball gets through, and
- 46:00Speaker 4: then the walks mount, and then big innings mount. I
- 46:02Speaker 4: feel like in Libby's bad starts, it was very similar
- 46:05Speaker 4: to that. So people don't realize you got to get
- 46:08Speaker 4: kicked in the sack a little bit to learn how
- 46:10Speaker 4: to get through those things and let the game slow
- 46:13Speaker 4: down for you, right? So hopefully for Libby's sake, with
- 46:16Speaker 4: his stuff and going through these times, the game will
- 46:19Speaker 4: slow down for him like it did for you. And
- 46:21Speaker 4: that's my hope for him going forward. I know, like
- 46:23Speaker 4: we said, we're all big Libby's fans. Just like when
- 46:26Speaker 4: you came in and did what you did this year,
- 46:27Speaker 4: we were like, hey, give Palante a chance. Like bad
- 46:30Speaker 4: stuff happened the year before and that will happen in
- 46:32Speaker 4: this game. But give them a break because they have
- 46:34Speaker 4: this stuff to pitch. So no, we're right there with you.
- 46:38Speaker 4: I know Jim loves all your catchers. He wants you
- 46:41Speaker 4: to choose who's your favorite catcher to throw to. and
- 46:44Speaker 4: put the rest of them, you know, one or two
- 46:46Speaker 4: of them under the bus. But, you know, as a staff,
- 46:49Speaker 4: you have to love the different catchers you guys have
- 46:53Speaker 4: to throw to because they're all warranted to be back
- 46:56Speaker 4: there and warranted for playing time, and they all bring
- 46:58Speaker 4: something different. So kind of touch on those guys right
- 47:01Speaker 4: now because you've got a good group.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 47:04Speaker 7: I mean, I know personally Ivan was so great for
- 47:06Speaker 7: me back there. I don't know what my year was
- 47:08Speaker 7: with him back there, but he was phenomenal. He always
- 47:11Speaker 7: seemed to call the right pitches at the right times.
- 47:14Speaker 7: I don't know what, I don't know what magic sauce
- 47:16Speaker 7: he had for that, but he was great. Uh, especially for, uh, Pedro,
- 47:20Speaker 7: what Pedro did was honestly incredible. I don't know at
- 47:22Speaker 7: what point of the year it was, but almost, it
- 47:23Speaker 7: was like two thirds of the season. He was tied
- 47:26Speaker 7: for the league lead in runner stone out. And like
- 47:28Speaker 7: a third of the games played, um, which is incredibly
- 47:31Speaker 7: hard to do. Like it's hard to do when you
- 47:32Speaker 7: are playing every game. And then he was doing in
- 47:35Speaker 7: less than half. Um, so you can tell, clearly tell
- 47:38Speaker 7: he's great back there at what he does. He's great
- 47:39Speaker 7: at throwing guys out. Great at calling a game. He
- 47:41Speaker 7: has a lot of really good stuff. And, uh, You know,
- 47:44Speaker 7: I hope he gets more opportunities here in the future.
- 47:46Speaker 7: And then Bernal, I mean, he came up and I
- 47:50Speaker 7: thought he did a great job with me. I thought
- 47:51Speaker 7: he was, you know, worked hard. He always tried to,
- 47:53Speaker 7: you know, kind of get the feel for what I
- 47:55Speaker 7: like to do. And I mean, when I would see
- 47:57Speaker 7: him hit, I don't know. I don't know what his
- 47:59Speaker 7: scouting report is, but every single time he came up
- 48:01Speaker 7: to bat, I felt like in like a big moment,
- 48:04Speaker 7: I would see him hit some fastballs above his head
- 48:07Speaker 7: at like 99, some incredibly good fastballs up in the zone.
- 48:11Speaker 7: And he just hammered them. So I don't know if
- 48:13Speaker 7: he's just great at that, but whatever it was, it
- 48:17Speaker 7: was really incredible to watch him, you know, come up
- 48:19Speaker 7: here and have that success. And for me personally, I
- 48:22Speaker 7: will never throw him a fastball up just from what
- 48:24Speaker 7: I've seen.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Andre, last question, then we're going to let you go.
- 48:28Speaker 1: What's for dinner tonight? What are you cooking?
- 48:32Speaker 9: Dinner tonight's going to be pretty simple.
- 48:35Speaker 7: I just got back. I'm just visiting my family out
- 48:37Speaker 7: in California right now. So, Probably just order something in.
- 48:41Speaker 7: But when I get back home, I've got some Gibby-sponsored
- 48:44Speaker 7: pans that he recommended to me. And I'm really excited
- 48:47Speaker 7: to make these new recipes that our new chef has
- 48:49Speaker 7: sent over to me. So we'll be making probably a
- 48:52Speaker 7: cavatelli alla vodka, a pistachio-crested lamb, or Wagyu sticky rice
- 48:56Speaker 7: will be next on the menu.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Sounds good.
- 48:59Speaker 4: All right.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Hey, hold on.
- 49:01Speaker 4: I got one thing. Two off-season things to work on, right?
- 49:05Speaker 4: Kick change to righties and make sure your skit on
- 49:09Speaker 4: the mic It gets locked in. You've got to have
- 49:12Speaker 4: a go-to and get the boys going on road trips.
- 49:16Speaker 7: Definitely room for improvement there. I don't like getting booed
- 49:18Speaker 7: every single time I hop on the mic. so we've
- 49:20Speaker 7: got to get something going.
- 49:21Speaker 4: There's a good chance you get booed even if you
- 49:24Speaker 4: have a great skit. That's kind of the skit when
- 49:27Speaker 4: you get on the mic.
- 49:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 49:29Speaker 9: Well, I'll let you know what that is when I
- 49:31Speaker 9: come up with something good.
- 49:32Speaker 4: If you need any help, Gibby and I, we've seen
- 49:35Speaker 4: some good ones. All right.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Get to work on that. And again, thanks for the time.
- 49:42Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 49:45Speaker 1: We'll see you for the next episode. Hopefully that one
- 49:48Speaker 1: won't suck.
