- 0:00Hey you guys, it's friendsly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. So glad that y'all are joining
- 0:06me on the podcast today. I honestly don't know what kind
- 0:09of season each of you are walking through right now.
- 0:12It might feel stretching, lonely, it might be great and
- 0:16sweet, or maybe you're just ready for a shift and a change.
- 0:20But today's passage reminds us that seasons are intentional,
- 0:25and in those seasons, community always matters.
- 0:30It matters so deeply and also what we invest in.
- 0:34It carries so much weight spiritually and eternally.
- 0:38So we are going to be reading in First Thessalonians chapter 2,
- 0:43verses 17 through 20. I'm going to read it in the
- 0:46Passion translation because I love this version.
- 0:48So let's go ahead and get started, beloved friends.
- 0:53We may have been torn away from you physically for a season, but
- 0:57never in our hearts, for we have had intense longings and have
- 1:01endeavored to come and see in your faces the reflection of
- 1:05this great love. We miss you badly, and I
- 1:09personally wanted to come to you trying again and again, but our
- 1:13adversary Satan blocked our way for what will be our confident
- 1:18hope, our exhilarating joy, our wonderful trophy that we will
- 1:22boast in before our Lord Jesus at His appearing.
- 1:26It is you. Yes, you are glorious pride and
- 1:31joy. OK, I love that version because
- 1:35there's just so much emphasis on the exclamation and you truly do
- 1:40feel Paul's emotions. But I want to go right into one
- 1:45line that really stuck out to me in the beginning.
- 1:48We see that he says, torn away from you physically for a
- 1:51season, but never in our hearts. So this underlines that you can
- 1:56be physically separated but still spiritually united.
- 2:01And it's true not just for Paul and the Thessalonians here.
- 2:05It's true for us and Jesus because we obviously do not see
- 2:09Jesus in the physical form, but we're united to him by his
- 2:14Spirit and that same Spirit. It binds believers together.
- 2:19This is how the body of Christ is designed to be unified.
- 2:24It's not just on Sunday mornings when we gather in a church
- 2:27building. Not just surface level
- 2:30connection, but everyday life together, ordinary conversations
- 2:35and sharing burdens, sharing joy.
- 2:38Paul says that he had intense longings and that he endeavored
- 2:42to see them. He missed them so badly.
- 2:45So I just want to ask. When is the last time that we
- 2:49felt that kind of longing for Christ centered, rooted
- 2:53community? It makes me think back to the
- 2:56early church in Acts. I want to read y'all from Acts
- 3:01chapter 2 verses 46 through 47. It says every day they continue
- 3:06to meet together in the temple courts.
- 3:09They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
- 3:12sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the
- 3:17people. So that is daily life together,
- 3:23praising God side by side in unison.
- 3:26And zooming out even further, this is where it's all headed.
- 3:30We see in Revelation 79 that John is describing.
- 3:36Before him there was a great multitude that no one could
- 3:39count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing
- 3:44before the throne and before the Lamb.
- 3:46And they're crying out in a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our
- 3:50God, who sits on the throne into the Lamb.
- 3:54So this picture of eternity, the bride of Christ that Jesus is
- 3:58coming back for, is meant to be together, every nation, every
- 4:03tribe. It does not matter what your
- 4:05background is, what you look like, where you come from.
- 4:09We're meant to worship as one. And when we're truly walking in
- 4:13community, we get to see more of Jesus because he lives in each
- 4:18believer. We see the reflection of this
- 4:20great love, as Paul says, in one another's faces and hearts.
- 4:25And that kind of unity, it takes effort.
- 4:28You have to be intentional and you have to be present.
- 4:32So just also I just want to add, just because one friend might be
- 4:37in a single season and one is married, that doesn't mean that
- 4:41your closeness has to disappear. Yes, of course rhythms are going
- 4:46to change with one having a spouse, but spiritual unity and
- 4:51meaningful friendship, it can still remain and it should still
- 4:55remain. There's so much to learn from
- 4:59what God is doing in different seasons of each person's life.
- 5:03Now Paul also says that they were part for a season and
- 5:08seasons are purposeful, but they're not permanent.
- 5:12And just think about natural seasons with weather.
- 5:16They're like life seasons and they shift too.
- 5:19Sometimes we forget that what feels endless right now, you can
- 5:23get so stuck and caught up in the moment that you forget it's
- 5:28actually temporary in light of what's to come.
- 5:32I love second Peter 3/8. It always recalibrates me.
- 5:36It says do not forget this one thing with the Lord.
- 5:40A day is like 1000 years and 1000 years are like a day y'all.
- 5:46This reminds us God is not on our timetable, we are on His.
- 5:53And think about it. Paul could have spiraled in
- 5:56frustration about being blocked by the enemy.
- 5:59He could have focused on all the inconveniences that he was
- 6:02experiencing. But instead he lifts his eyes up
- 6:06and he looks forward to Christ appearing in his return.
- 6:11He was already thinking eternally.
- 6:14So I just want to ask. How are you viewing your current
- 6:18season that you're in? Is it something that you just
- 6:22want out of, or do you trust that it is intentionally shaping
- 6:27you? Are you engaging in today, in
- 6:30the present moment, with gratitude in your heart, while
- 6:34still longing for eternal glory? I think this is something we can
- 6:38all be asking the Lord daily. God, what are you teaching me
- 6:43right now? How can I become more like Jesus
- 6:46today? And then we see Paul talk about
- 6:51Satan. He says that he is our
- 6:54adversary. And sometimes I just want to say
- 6:59he doesn't block us with only chaos.
- 7:02Sometimes it's more subtle than that.
- 7:04It can be accusations, discouragement, comparison,
- 7:09discontentment. Satan literally means adversary,
- 7:14opposer, or accuser, and he wants to accuse you in your
- 7:19thoughts, in your head. He wants to block your growth
- 7:23and your obedience. He wants to cancel out your joy
- 7:26in the season that God has given you right now.
- 7:30And for me personally, for a little bit, I had to confront
- 7:34discontentment and singleness because I have a desire for
- 7:38marriage and I wanted a relationship so badly that it
- 7:42was almost consuming me. And it was like I was treating
- 7:47it as if it would complete me. But I had to come to terms with
- 7:51the bottom line that only Christ completes me and learning
- 7:55contentment. It's a daily choice.
- 7:58I had to stop feeding a narrative that I was missing out
- 8:02and stop taking in things that reinforce that mindset.
- 8:06Whether that's through the music that I was listening to or the
- 8:09shows I was watching, I had to choose gratitude intentionally.
- 8:14I still do right now. Now, I can still desire
- 8:17marriage, but I'm not waiting to live once I get it because I'm
- 8:22fulfilled in Jesus. So I just want y'all to think,
- 8:27if you believe that your joy starts in the next season,
- 8:30you're going to definitely miss out on the abundant life
- 8:33available to you right now. So ask yourself these things
- 8:38honestly. Are you aware, like actually
- 8:42aware, that you have an enemy who opposes you?
- 8:47Are you letting him block your growth in any way, shape, or
- 8:50form? Are accusations and thoughts
- 8:54shaping your perspective? Because we need to let that
- 8:58awareness make us more focused, not fearful.
- 9:03And I love how Paul ends this passage.
- 9:06It says, he says what will be our confident hope, our
- 9:09exhilarating joy, our wonderful trophy.
- 9:12It is you. Besides knowing Jesus himself,
- 9:18guys, one of the greatest joys in life is who we get to
- 9:21minister to about him. Paul did not point to his status
- 9:26or even his success rate with who he was evangelizing to.
- 9:30He pointed to people. There is nothing like seeing
- 9:35someone encounter Jesus, truly watching the freedom break out
- 9:40and the chains just be released and being a part of someone's
- 9:45growth in the faith. I was talking about this
- 9:48recently with a friend. But sometimes you're the one
- 9:51planting the seeds and you're part of the sowing, and
- 9:55sometimes you're watering. Sometimes, though, you get to
- 9:58see the harvest. You're in the reaping, but
- 10:01ultimately, God is the one who saves.
- 10:04We are just the vessels. So there's not a better than
- 10:08moment and sharing. Jesus is not meant to feel
- 10:12heavy. Paul calls it confident hope.
- 10:17He calls it joy. It's a trophy, it's a reward.
- 10:21Those are positive, happy words. So something I just love
- 10:28envisioning is getting to heaven one day.
- 10:31Imagine you're standing before Jesus, and with him are the
- 10:36faces of people who you recognize, who have encountered
- 10:39him because you were faithful to speak out about your faith.
- 10:44That is eternal joy that Paul is pointing to.
- 10:48So let's go ahead and close out in prayer.
- 10:52Dear Father, thank you for the season that you have each of us
- 10:57in right now. Would you help us to not rush it
- 11:02or even resent it, but to grow through it, to embrace it?
- 11:08Would you give us a deeper longing for Christ centered
- 11:12community? Would you protect us from the
- 11:16enemy's lies and accusations? Give us the ability and the
- 11:21awareness of when He is attacking us?
- 11:24What is not your truth? And help us to recall what is
- 11:29your truth so that we can fight back.
- 11:32Would you teach us contentment in you alone?
- 11:35It's not found in a perfect job, in a perfect relationship or
- 11:40situation. It's found only in you.
- 11:43Jesus, use our lives for eternal impact.
- 11:49Would you let our joy be evident to everyone around us into
- 11:54people that we get the privilege to point towards you?
- 11:58We pray this in your holy name. Amen.
- 12:02OK, well that is today's episode.
- 12:05I hope that it blesses you guys and you can learn something from
- 12:09it. And praying for y'all's day and
- 12:13hope that y'all have a great rest of the week.
- 12:15I'll see y'all in the next episode.
