- 0:21drag legend Heclina's because of death, concluding a three and a half
- 0:25year long investigation that sent shockwaves through San Francisco's arts communities after
- 0:30the performer was found dead in a Soho flat by her friend,
- 0:33fellow drag luminary, Peaches Christ, in twenty twenty three. Now, police are
- 0:39also admitting the case was mishandled because of investigative bias, after CCTV
- 0:44footage of three men leaving Heclina's flat was not released for twenty
- 0:47one months, leading to widespread public scrutiny. Ceclina, born Stefan Thor Grigelko,
- 0:53died of acute mixed drug toxicity, with cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamines, GHB, and
- 0:59ketamine, among the illegal substances found in her system. The San Francisco
- 1:03Chronicle first reported after reviewing the september fifteenth inquest, police determined that
- 1:08she had consumed the drugs consensually over the course of forty eight
- 1:11hours. Peaches Christ, also known as Joshua Grannell, was sharing a flat
- 1:16with Hecklina while the rehearsed for an upcoming production. The doo were
- 1:20days away from co-starring in a two week run of the musical
- 1:23parody Mommy Queerist at the Soho Theater. Grannell had checked into a
- 1:27hotel over the weekend after Hecklina expressed interest in using their flat
- 1:31to arrange sexual encounters with men she met on gay hookup apps.
- 1:36The morning Granell returned, he found the door had been left ajar,
- 1:39and her belongings were strewn all over the flat, Grannell previously told
- 1:43S F Gate. Drugs were present, indicating she had relapsed after years
- 1:48of sobriety. It wasn't until he stepped into the living room that
- 1:51he found his friend on the floor, in drag and motionless. He
- 1:54realized she was cold to the touch. Grannell immediately called police and
- 1:59was ruled out as a suspect, but said it took years for
- 2:02the coroner to release an autopsy report or other official paperwork. In
- 2:07may twenty twenty three, he helped put on a memorial for her
- 2:10at the Castro Theatre that drew thousands of people and shut down
- 2:13the street. A tribute to her was featured on an episode of
- 2:17RuPaul's Drag Race, and her likeness was added to the Showtime mural
- 2:21at Oasis. Meanwhile, communication from London Metropolitan Police all but dwindled. Granell
- 2:27said he and Nancy French, Heclina's close friend and legal next of
- 2:30kin, often went months without hearing from the Granell began to wonder
- 2:35if the circumstances under which Hecklina's body was found had contributed to
- 2:39prejudice in the investigation. A month before her death, an independent review
- 2:43of Met Police, led by Baroness Louise Casey, found evidence of institutional
- 2:48homophobia within the department. Those suspicions were confirmed in emails reviewed by
- 2:53SF Gate and by London police in a conversation over Zoom in
- 2:57february twenty twenty four, when Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis
- 3:02told Grannell in French, an officer had been removed from the case
- 3:06over conscious or unconscious bias. The release of the C C T
- 3:10V footage in january twenty twenty five was the first public update
- 3:14they received since the announcement of Heclina's death at the age of
- 3:18fifty five. Grannell said he doesn't believe this information would have come
- 3:22to light had he not reached out to an editor at the
- 3:24Guardian, who assigned a reporter to a story about the investigation. Later
- 3:29that March, police staff investigator Natalie Juchat, the fifth investigator assigned to
- 3:35lead the case, traveled to California to speak with Granelle in French,
- 3:39confirming that a combination of an amount of drugs that would be
- 3:42considered lethal were found in Heclina's system, the specifics of which were
- 3:46not shared publicly. Criticism over the handling of the investigation culminated in
- 3:51dual protests that same month. People marched from Big Bend to Scotland
- 3:56Yard in London, and from the stud to Oasis Stateside, the bar
- 4:00where Hecklina first shaped San Francisco's alternative drag scene in the nineteen
- 4:04nineties through Te Shack, a DIY punk spectacle of a show then
- 4:08ran every Tuesday night for twelve years, and the queer nightclub she
- 4:11co founded in Soma in twenty fourteen. London met You're Not Done
- 4:16Yet, the crowds chanted. A recent statement provided to SF Gate by
- 4:21Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessa said that detectives found no
- 4:26evidence to suggest third party involvement or that his death was suspicious,
- 4:30but acknowledged the initial investigation into Stephen's death was not good enough.
- 4:35While the shortcomings identified ultimately had no bearing on the outcome of
- 4:39this tragedy, the investigation did not meet the high standards we expect
- 4:43of ourselves, Jessa wrote. We also recognize that our early poor communication
- 4:48with Stephen's next of kin compounded their grief at what was already
- 4:52an incredibly difficult time. We have apologized to them directly. During a
- 4:57conversation over Zoom last week, Grannell told SF Gate he wasn't surprised
- 5:01by the latest developments. It's more just kind of shocking and frustrating
- 5:06that it took so long to get us to the point where
- 5:08we got the answer that I think we thought we were going
- 5:11to get, he said from the old mint, where he was preparing
- 5:14for opening weekend of his annual immersive haunt, Terror Vault. Because of
- 5:19being ignored and the frustrations of the Met, it doesn't feel like
- 5:22closure. What has confounded him is what he's learned about the Met
- 5:27Police's huge and well documented history of a bias against queer people,
- 5:31citing the recent case involving serial killer and rapist Stephen Port, who
- 5:35murdered four young men he met on Grinder in London in twenty
- 5:39fourteen and twenty fifteen. In twenty twenty one, the BBC reported that
- 5:44police failed to link the deaths, accepted fake evidence, and ignored grieving
- 5:48families looking for answers. When it was determined that this department had
- 5:53a systemic homophobia problem, the were supposed to change, Granell said. So
- 5:58I feel feel like our job as friends and activists and people
- 6:01with a platform was to hold them accountable, which is what we
- 6:04did. Following the conclusion of the investigation, UK based television and documentary
- 6:10production company CMG Productions announced it will be producing a documentary about
- 6:14Heclina, tracing the life of a drag queen who changed the world,
- 6:19which will also serve as an indictment of the institution that failed
- 6:22her. The film is expected to include decades of footage from Heclina's
- 6:27performance archive that Grannell recently fundraised to digitize and put online with
- 6:31they help of the GLBT Historical Society, that he described as thousands
- 6:35of hours worth of shows from boxes and boxes and boxes of
- 6:39videotapes. Granell and the filmmaking team hope to release the documentary within
- 6:44the next few years. It's something tangible to throw my creative brain
- 6:48into, and to be a part of, to sort of make sense
- 6:51of this nightmare, Grinnell said. If we are able to use this
- 6:54film to tell the extraordinary story of this trailblazer, who was very
- 6:58truly punk rock, and really did things for drag that had not
- 7:01been done, then that's the thing I can kind of get excited
- 7:04about and spend time and energy on. Grinnell's hope is that young
- 7:09people who are exposed to Heclina's story will find a source of
- 7:12inspiration and a narrative about her art form they may not be
- 7:15accustomed to, one that existed long before the televised days of Drag
- 7:19Race. I think a lot of young queer people don't really know
- 7:23what drag was like before that show existed, and I think they're
- 7:26surprised when they realize, oh no, Drag was way more shocking, way
- 7:30more button pushing, way more interesting, quite frankly. He said, so a
- 7:34documentary about Heclina is sort of the silver lining that I'm kind
- 7:38of leaning into.
