- 0:00This is Chris with the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 0:03I'm thrilled today to be joined by Sushmita
- 0:05Poffi, MDMPH.
- 0:07He is chief of the division of primary
- 0:09care pediatrics
- 0:10at Stony Brook Medicine
- 0:12and chief medical program adviser for the Allen
- 0:14Aldis Center for communicating science and a 10
- 0:16year professor of pediatrics for the Renaissance School
- 0:19of Medicine. Doctor Pote, thank you for joining
- 0:21us today.
- 0:22Thanks so much for having me.
- 0:25Doctor, could you please introduce yourself and tell
- 0:27us a bit about your background?
- 0:29Sure.
- 0:30Well, you've already cited all my titles, so
- 0:32that's terrific.
- 0:34But my background really is as a health
- 0:36care executive
- 0:37with a focus on
- 0:39workforce development and population health.
- 0:43And that's,
- 0:45my fellowship training is in that, in population
- 0:48health directly.
- 0:49And I've really been working
- 0:51throughout my career on how we can make
- 0:53the system work better for everybody.
- 0:57Thank you for that, doctor. Could you tell
- 0:59us let's start with this. What is one
- 1:00change you've made in the last year where
- 1:02you had great results?
- 1:04Yeah. Sure.
- 1:06So with support from HRSA,
- 1:09we have a cooperative agreement to promote provider
- 1:12resiliency, health care workforce resiliency.
- 1:15And so we've been implementing
- 1:17a number of programs
- 1:19to do that.
- 1:20And that's completely in line with our
- 1:23strategic plan for Stony Brook Medicine where the
- 1:25first priority is on
- 1:27a positive workforce
- 1:29culture.
- 1:30So we've been putting together various pieces and
- 1:34one piece, that I'd like to spend a
- 1:36little time telling you about is our Alda
- 1:38Healthcare experience.
- 1:40And that is a
- 1:42medical improv communication
- 1:44workshop for healthcare professionals.
- 1:47It draws upon the theater arts and the
- 1:49discipline of science communication
- 1:51to build healthcare team communication
- 1:53skills.
- 1:54And we all know that when a team
- 1:56feels cohesive, it has positive downstream effects on
- 1:59lots of different things, including safety,
- 2:02quality,
- 2:03and, of course,
- 2:04organizational
- 2:05culture, retention,
- 2:06etcetera.
- 2:08Doctor, I'm glad you mentioned the improv portion
- 2:10of that. That's not necessarily something that
- 2:13our audience would necessarily connect
- 2:16to health care and building, workforce development.
- 2:19So can you explain a little bit about
- 2:22how that has been successful and the feedback
- 2:24that you've gotten from those who have participated?
- 2:27Yeah. Sure.
- 2:28So to be honest, in health care, we
- 2:31are doing improv every day. Like, whom you
- 2:33work with in a shift, that changes.
- 2:36We have new, trainees that join our workforce
- 2:39on a regular basis,
- 2:41new hires, all of that.
- 2:44And we all need to work together in
- 2:45the moment to take care of the patient
- 2:47that's in front of us,
- 2:49even if we don't know each other very
- 2:50well.
- 2:52And so improv
- 2:53is really based on that principle
- 2:56of
- 2:57taking what's been given to you and saying
- 2:59as they say, yes and,
- 3:02building upon that piece.
- 3:04And that's one of the first rules of
- 3:06improv.
- 3:07And so this healthcare communication
- 3:09workshop, we've been putting together and piloting and
- 3:13evaluating
- 3:14now for the past 5 or 6 years.
- 3:17And all of our evaluation is showing its
- 3:19positive impact,
- 3:21both on communication skills for individuals,
- 3:24but also amongst
- 3:26team cohesion,
- 3:27feeling that
- 3:29connection to the other folks that you are
- 3:31working with and thinking about ways that you
- 3:33can continue to leverage those opportunities for personal
- 3:37connection
- 3:38in your day to day work, so that
- 3:40you're all rowing in the same direction.
- 3:44That all sounds very much worthwhile, doctor. Thank
- 3:46you for outlining
- 3:48where that trend has been working for you.
- 3:51Speaking of trends, so what are the top
- 3:53trends you are following in health care at
- 3:54the moment?
- 3:56Yeah. So I'm looking a lot at what
- 3:58is being done in workforce retention, resilience,
- 4:02those trends, how
- 4:04technology can be used to really develop
- 4:07and support our workforce. So everything from virtual
- 4:11scribes to,
- 4:14the automated kind of billing pieces that can
- 4:16be done. All of those things are really
- 4:19important, I think to support our workforce,
- 4:22who continue to be stressed
- 4:24with the high levels of burnout that are
- 4:26occurring.
- 4:27So those are the kinds of things that
- 4:28I've been following.
- 4:30Of course, the downstream impact health equity is
- 4:33near and dear to my heart. So I'm
- 4:35certainly very attuned to what is happening in
- 4:37that space as well.
- 4:39Opportunities that come from various organizations, the federal
- 4:42government,
- 4:43philanthropic, etcetera,
- 4:45for, implementing or supporting new programs.
- 4:48All of those things are things that I
- 4:49I tend to follow.
- 4:52Doctor, along the lines of communication as far
- 4:54as stress is concerned,
- 4:56have you found that
- 4:58being able to improve communication skills has helped
- 5:01reduce stress among teams at Stony Brook and
- 5:03elsewhere?
- 5:04We have, and I'm happy to share we
- 5:06published some about that, and there's more forthcoming.
- 5:10It's also a good time for me to
- 5:11mention our single session support center that we
- 5:14call our S3 center.
- 5:16And this is a virtual support
- 5:19that's available to health care workers in acute
- 5:21need.
- 5:22There's 2 pieces available for health care providers.
- 5:26One piece is something they can complete on
- 5:28their own.
- 5:30It's a single session web based intervention to
- 5:32promote a growth mindset,
- 5:34and it's been proven to help reduce
- 5:37mild to moderate depression and anxiety.
- 5:40The other part is a virtual meeting with
- 5:42a trained person
- 5:44who can help guide development of a brief
- 5:47action plan
- 5:48around whatever the acute need is.
- 5:51And that we are in the process of
- 5:52evaluating,
- 5:54its impact here at Stony Brook Medicine.
- 5:59Doctor, once you have everyone on your team,
- 6:01anyone's team, growing in the same direction as
- 6:04you put it,
- 6:05hopefully, growth is one of the next steps.
- 6:08How are you thinking about growth in the
- 6:09next year or 2?
- 6:12Absolutely. Growth is definitely one of the next
- 6:14steps,
- 6:16and we are thinking about growth in multiple
- 6:18ways.
- 6:19As I mentioned, our first priority is our
- 6:21workforce
- 6:22culture, our organizational culture.
- 6:25We want to be a place that people
- 6:26want to work at and stay working at.
- 6:29And we are
- 6:31and we're going to continue to try to
- 6:33make it as attractive as possible for folks
- 6:36to stay here at Stony Brook Medicine.
- 6:38So we're doing lots of different things across
- 6:40the organization to support that.
- 6:43We're also a place where we want to
- 6:45implement innovative ways to deliver health care, so
- 6:49that people feel that their work is valued,
- 6:52and that the community is getting that benefit.
- 6:56So all of those things really are focusing
- 6:58on workforce as the first step and then
- 7:01the downstream impact of that in terms of
- 7:04building opportunities for growth and expansion.
- 7:08Thank you, doctor. Lastly, I wanted to ask
- 7:10you, what is one issue or element of
- 7:13health care do you think deserves a brighter
- 7:14spotlight?
- 7:16I think the workforce
- 7:18issues that we've been talking about deserves a
- 7:21brighter spotlight. I know there's movements at multiple
- 7:24levels to do that,
- 7:25and I think there needs to be more.
- 7:29Doctor Baldy, thank you for being so generous
- 7:31with your time and your insights today. We
- 7:33absolutely cannot wait to share them with our
- 7:34audience, and we look forward to connecting with
- 7:36you soon, including at Becker's event.
- 7:39Thank you so much.
