- 0:01If we reflect on how many actions or operations of the
- 0:05physical body take place without our mental intervention, it
- 0:10becomes clear that the body has its own highly developed and
- 0:15essential form of consciousness that operates independently of
- 0:19the mind. One common example is widely
- 0:23experienced and individuals walking across ice or some other
- 0:27slippery surface. And suddenly starts to lose his
- 0:31balance. Before the mind can react, the
- 0:35body sets in motion a balancing routine and in many cases can
- 0:40prevent an outright fall to the ground.
- 0:44Other examples get into the entire complex mechanism of how
- 0:49the body's organs and internal functions occur.
- 0:53When placed under some kind of threat, the body reacts with a
- 0:57fight or flight response. Secreting adrenaline to activate
- 1:04the sense organs and the organs of action to prepare for some
- 1:10kind of emergency response. Cellular energy production, the
- 1:16functioning of the digestive system, the detoxifying system
- 1:21of the kidneys, the blood sugar regulating action of the
- 1:25pancreas, The multiple actions of the liver.
- 1:30The metabolism regulating action of the thyroid, the responses of
- 1:36the body's immune systems, the master control of various glands
- 1:41through the pituitary, the chemistry underlying the need
- 1:46for sleep, the call of hunger and thirst, The method for
- 1:50carrying sense impressions across nervous pathways and the
- 1:55function of neurotransmitters. All represent bodily
- 2:00functionality that is not controlled or driven by the
- 2:05mental awareness directly. When something malfunctions at
- 2:11the level of the body consciousness, the mind
- 2:14frequently has no idea of the underlying cause or how to
- 2:19address the issue. This has led to the development
- 2:23of an enormous proliferation of specialized doctors.
- 2:27Medical researchers and extensive and highly detailed
- 2:31tests to try to figure out what is not working as expected in
- 2:36the automatic bodily metabolic systems and thereby to try to
- 2:42intervene to help restore the balance if possible.
- 2:47While it is true that the mind and the vital can have impact on
- 2:51these bodily functions, it remains an indirect influence.
- 2:56That does not entirely override or control the native function
- 3:00of the body to the extent also that the bodily has undergone
- 3:05changes through a disease process.
- 3:08The support or pressure applied by the mind or the vital is not
- 3:12immediate but must work through the body and its functions in a
- 3:17process that takes time. The body's consciousness is
- 3:22based on developments that have evolved through millennia.
- 3:26And which may have their roots in the original stirrings of
- 3:30life in matter. For that to occur, changes in
- 3:36the physical substance of matter were required that developed
- 3:40into a physical consciousness that could support the movement
- 3:44of the life energy in matter. The relationships between
- 3:49systems, organs, functions have been replicated and refined.
- 3:55As life forms became more complex and eventually began to
- 4:00adapt to the evolution of the mental consciousness and the
- 4:04additional needs that were recognized to create these
- 4:07support structures for life and mind in matter, Sriorobindo
- 4:14writes Quote The body has its own consciousness and acts from
- 4:19it even without any mental will of our own.
- 4:23Or even against that will. And our surface mind knows very
- 4:28little about this body consciousness, feels it only in
- 4:32an imperfect way, sees only its results, and has the greatest
- 4:38difficulty in finding out their causes.
- 4:41It is part of the yoga to become aware of this separate
- 4:45consciousness of the body, to see and feel its movements.
- 4:50And the forces that act upon it from inside or outside, and to
- 4:54learn how to control and direct it, even in its most hidden and
- 5:00to us subconscient processes. But the body consciousness
- 5:05itself is only part of the individualized physical
- 5:10consciousness in us which we gather and build out of the
- 5:14secretly conscious forces of universal physical nature.
