- 0:00It started by noticing a backpack.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1182 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Jasper Steinmetz.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You notice things every day, but
- 0:23upgraded thinking is the kind that gets up and walks toward
- 0:26it. Here's the story.
- 0:30A few months ago, Jasper Steinmetz was walking a trail in
- 0:33Austin, TX when he passed by a man carrying a worn red Indiana
- 0:38University backpack. Jasper is an IU graduate.
- 0:42He passed 1000 strangers on that trail and kept walking past
- 0:46every one of them. This time he stopped though.
- 0:49He introduced himself, learned the man's name, Samson James.
- 0:54Something about it stuck with him.
- 0:56So that night he searched it online and what came back
- 1:00confirmed his hunch. He had heard Sampson's name
- 1:03before. Samson James had been a running
- 1:06back at Indiana, a four-star recruit out of high school His
- 1:11freshman year in 2019, he ran for over 100 yards and a
- 1:15touchdown against Purdue. Then a knee injury.
- 1:18Then a diagnosis nobody saw coming.
- 1:21Then eventually, months with no place to sleep in a city where
- 1:25he didn't know a single soul. Jasper didn't have a plan to fix
- 1:30any of that. What he had was a backpack he
- 1:32recognized. In a decision to make about it,
- 1:35he started a GoFundMe. He reached out to former IU
- 1:38players, guys who'd worn the same jersey years apart, never
- 1:42having met Mike Kadik, Peyton Hindershot.
- 1:46Aaron Casey. CJ West.
- 1:49The money came in $20,000 in all.
- 1:52Not because of the backpack, because a stranger decided that
- 1:56recognizing someone obligates you to do something about it.
- 2:00That fundraiser paid for an apartment, clothes, food,
- 2:04furniture, a phone, a way to start over.
- 2:07None of it happens if Jasper notices the backpack and keeps
- 2:10walking, which is what most of us do most days.
- 2:13With most people. The backpack just made a
- 2:16stranger story visible for one second.
- 2:19What Jasper did with that one second is what made the
- 2:22difference. I'm guessing you may have
- 2:25noticed something recently. You passed people like that.
- 2:30Somebody wearing a signal you'd recognize if you slowed down
- 2:33enough to look. A shirt from a hometown.
- 2:36A hard week written on someone's face.
- 2:40The question was never whether you'd notice.
- 2:43You notice plenty. The question is what you do in
- 2:47the three seconds after. The better story to tell
- 2:50yourself is noticing is the invitation walking over is the
- 2:55answer. Tell me a story of a prompt that
- 2:58led to an interaction to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
