- 0:54Speaker 1: this is the Hunt to Eat podcast. Actually that's a lie.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's the meat Eater podcast. But Yannie is selling Hunt
- 1:02Speaker 1: Eat t shirts telling about them Jannie Hunt to Eat
- 1:05Speaker 1: t shirts. My brother and I started this project maybe
- 1:11Speaker 1: three years ago now, really yeah, yeah, it started slowly,
- 1:18Speaker 1: we started talking about it, you know. But how it
- 1:20Speaker 1: came about was the fact that I love to hunt.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I love to tell people about hunting. I love to wear.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I wanted to wear a hunting T shirt that represented
- 1:29Speaker 1: really the way I felt about hunting, and I really
- 1:31Speaker 1: didn't feel like I could find that at Cobells and
- 1:33Speaker 1: Sportsmans at the time. So we started making our own
- 1:36Speaker 1: hunt shirts. Let many states ago now Montana, Colorado, Texas,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and we have a couple just kind of blank hunt
- 1:48Speaker 1: Eat shirts, not state affiliated. Now I've always been able
- 1:51Speaker 1: to say because I'm always plugging Yanni's T shirt company,
- 1:53Speaker 1: his his T shirt Empire, because I don't, uh you know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I don't have any steak in the game, right back
- 2:01Speaker 1: me up on this. No, all you get is a
- 2:04Speaker 1: couple of free T shirts I guess it called free teachers,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and already have two many T shirts. But now that's
- 2:08Speaker 1: gonna change because Janni is actually um gonna be working
- 2:13Speaker 1: on his design. He and his design team at the
- 2:20Speaker 1: corporate headquarters World Headquarters, at the World at the Hunt
- 2:24Speaker 1: Eat World Headquarters are gonna be working up a meat
- 2:28Speaker 1: Eat or hunt Eat shirt. No, it actually got the
- 2:31Speaker 1: design got approved late last night, and uh the graphics
- 2:35Speaker 1: guys doing the final artwork on it this week, so
- 2:39Speaker 1: I haven't even seen it. But this new shirt is
- 2:41Speaker 1: going to be available through me Eater channels and also
- 2:43Speaker 1: through Yanni's own Hunt Eat. What's your hunt eat dot com? Yes, sir,
- 2:47Speaker 1: h U N T T O E A T. Yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 1: don't put the two letter two in there. Someone else
- 2:55Speaker 1: already snagged that. Doing main name really find know who? Well, well,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's the same thing with like meat eater dot com.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You know, We've tried to contact him left and right,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and it's you know, he's got a Facebook page. But
- 3:07Speaker 1: it's more it's like hunting for restaurants is kind of
- 3:11Speaker 1: is the basis, but there's nothing there, you know. Uh,
- 3:15Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about not that now we're done plugging
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yanni's T shirt company. We're actually the thing I want
- 3:20Speaker 1: to talk about right now, Like the purpose of this
- 3:24Speaker 1: episode is to make a gigantic infomercial about the guide
- 3:33Speaker 1: book volumes that we've been working on called The Complete Guy,
- 3:38Speaker 1: The Hunting Butcher and Cooking, Wild Game, Buying One Big Game,
- 3:41Speaker 1: Buying two Small Games. But first I want to like
- 3:43Speaker 1: talk about a different aspect of books. And it's because
- 3:46Speaker 1: Janice my whole life, like my my whole professional life
- 3:52Speaker 1: or hunting life, whatever, both of those lives. People have
- 3:57Speaker 1: been telling me to read Jack O'Connor, who is You'll
- 4:03Speaker 1: hear many descriptions as the guy. He's like the granddaddy, Okay,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the first, the original what's known as a gun writer. Right,
- 4:13Speaker 1: he was at out their life for a bazillion years.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He was doing like the bulk of his hunting and
- 4:18Speaker 1: writing kind of in the post World War two years. Okay,
- 4:22Speaker 1: up and up well into the seventies. And if you
- 4:27Speaker 1: own a TO seventy, you own a TO seventy because
- 4:30Speaker 1: of Jack O'Connor. Right. He it was a great champion
- 4:35Speaker 1: of that cartridge. And I was guilty of having never like,
- 4:40Speaker 1: despite everybody always saying like, oh, you should read Jack O'Connor,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I never read Jack O'Connor. One of these people always
- 4:44Speaker 1: tell you about to read Jack O'Connor is because you know,
- 4:46Speaker 1: he liked to hunt Cousder and I like CU's dere um.
- 4:49Speaker 1: He's also a big sheep guy. So I started reading.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yanni gave me a book. It's like the complete Jack O'Connor, um. Yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 1: some sort of like a compilation greatest of I think. Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 1: it's been a very difficult read for me. Why. I'll
- 5:07Speaker 1: start out by saying this, I'll started saying, Jack O'Connor,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and then I encourage you, listener, I encourage you to
- 5:12Speaker 1: read some Jack O'Connor. What Jack O'Connor has going for
- 5:16Speaker 1: him is he's a fantastic writer. Okay, he's a he's
- 5:24Speaker 1: a great writer. Yes, when you read some of those stories,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I feel like when he's talking about even though it's
- 5:30Speaker 1: a warm beer because back then they didn't refrigerate their
- 5:33Speaker 1: beer when they're out camping. He talked about coming back
- 5:35Speaker 1: from accuse deer hunt and like sitting in like a
- 5:38Speaker 1: hot tent but cracking this like warm beer, and man,
- 5:41Speaker 1: when he describes it, I was like, man, I'm right
- 5:43Speaker 1: there drinking that beer with you. Great writer. Um has
- 5:49Speaker 1: unique ways of getting into and out of his stories,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you know, a phenomenal craftsman of words. But I just
- 5:59Speaker 1: like the like gun writer thing is always very troubling
- 6:03Speaker 1: to me because, like you get the sense rend O'Connor,
- 6:07Speaker 1: that guy wouldn't go on a squirrel hunt without a guide.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Do you think, yeah, he's just like he in some
- 6:15Speaker 1: ways the old gun writers and some gun writers they're
- 6:18Speaker 1: like they seem like trigger men. They are out there
- 6:23Speaker 1: to shoot right and everything else to them is just like,
- 6:29Speaker 1: besides the shooting, everything else to them is just like
- 6:34Speaker 1: details they can't be bothered with, right. But I feel
- 6:38Speaker 1: like back in his day's take me out so I
- 6:40Speaker 1: can shoot something. That's what I feel like their attitude is.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And he's got this thing too, like this like he
- 6:48Speaker 1: probably started this, the whole gunwriter thing where he goes
- 6:51Speaker 1: he's talking about shooting at these doll sheet and reading's
- 6:55Speaker 1: description brings to mind, now everyone's great fear is about
- 6:58Speaker 1: long range shooting, like out like long rain. And she
- 7:00Speaker 1: was like, oh, people are taking these shots. You shouln't
- 7:02Speaker 1: be taken. Yeah, But here's Jack O'Connor like bragging up
- 7:06Speaker 1: about taking three yard shots at doll sheep running full tilt, yeah,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and he's like aiming eight feet off the end of
- 7:14Speaker 1: its nose, gets up there, he's got one in the jaw,
- 7:18Speaker 1: one in the ass, one on the back, one through
- 7:22Speaker 1: the lungs, and then he goes into that dumb thing
- 7:24Speaker 1: gunwriters going to where he's like, okay, so he like
- 7:26Speaker 1: fills this thing full of holes taking shots he should
- 7:29Speaker 1: never be taken. Then she drags it down to the
- 7:32Speaker 1: ground and he's like, oh, in the grain you know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: the or the hundred and sixty grain boat tail pushed
- 7:39Speaker 1: by fifty six grains of in a blank. Primer really
- 7:42Speaker 1: did his job, and like you didn't. It's just ridiculous.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's like when you're reading gun writers now and they
- 7:49Speaker 1: always have that part where like we went to wherever
- 7:51Speaker 1: to to Africa to test out the new load, and
- 7:54Speaker 1: they talk about this hunt like in the bullet. Really
- 7:56Speaker 1: it's like really, like that's that's that's not how the
- 8:00Speaker 1: test things in real life. So you can't like act
- 8:02Speaker 1: like that's a test, right, It's just just making anecdotal observations.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And here you're anecdotal observation. It is based off blasting
- 8:11Speaker 1: away at adults. Sheeps is running full tilt. He's like
- 8:15Speaker 1: every shot the guy takes makes you cringe. He's got,
- 8:18Speaker 1: he's got. It was almost a hundred years ago. No, yeah, yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 1: so I just feel like it was there was there
- 8:26Speaker 1: were different ethics back then. I'm not talking about different ethics.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I'm talking about it's just like, yeah, but it's the
- 8:30Speaker 1: same people's stuff are saying now. People act like, oh,
- 8:33Speaker 1: the old days, right, So people think about Jack O'Connor, right,
- 8:37Speaker 1: like the old people didn't take these shots that were
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know, people were experienced and and um, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: like the old one shot, one bullet deal. And now
- 8:47Speaker 1: you got these long range guys taking shot nation never
- 8:50Speaker 1: be taken. And here's this iconic like everyone's favorite gun writer,
- 8:54Speaker 1: right taking ridiculous shots. The guys nowadays don't take. Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: people still do take him. But I don't think people.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I don't think you'll find many dolls sheep hunters are
- 9:04Speaker 1: shooting at full tilt running dolls sheep at three d yards.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I doubt it. I think a lot of guys would
- 9:09Speaker 1: be like nope. But here's the guy getting famous off
- 9:14Speaker 1: that stuff. He's going to take a crack at a
- 9:18Speaker 1: doll sheep where there's a U standing there in a
- 9:20Speaker 1: ram standing behind the you, and he can just see
- 9:22Speaker 1: the crest of its back behind the EU, and he
- 9:25Speaker 1: takes a shot seeing if he can't nick it spine.
- 9:30Speaker 1: He's taking ask shots, ear shots, and he like he's
- 9:34Speaker 1: just shooting. That's what I'm saying. That's how it was.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It was okay to do that back then. I still
- 9:42Speaker 1: think that now. Maybe not skimming one over the back
- 9:44Speaker 1: of a U and into the spine of one is
- 9:46Speaker 1: something that someone's gonna try today. But I still feel
- 9:49Speaker 1: like people are taking I mean, think about anlo. How
- 9:52Speaker 1: many dudes do you think are shooting at running animos
- 9:57Speaker 1: every day? I've killed running alo. Yeah. Like, I just
- 10:04Speaker 1: feel like now people are discussing that more in a
- 10:07Speaker 1: is this okay to do you know, ethics type of conversation.
- 10:10Speaker 1: We're back then it was okay. I mean look at
- 10:13Speaker 1: Art Young and Saxon Pope. Those boys used to launch.
- 10:17Speaker 1: They used to go on hunt trips with like a
- 10:19Speaker 1: thousand arrows because they see one game animal at a
- 10:21Speaker 1: hundred yards and would just start launching, you know, like
- 10:25Speaker 1: a war, you know, just raining arrows. And that was that's,
- 10:29Speaker 1: you know, the beginning of the Pope and Young club.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah no, my owd man, that's a good point. My
- 10:33Speaker 1: old man was involved in Pope and Young way ago,
- 10:35Speaker 1: like in the fifties, right. He was bow hunting back
- 10:37Speaker 1: before their both seasons, you know. And he knew this
- 10:41Speaker 1: guy from the Chicago because he was big in Chicago bowman,
- 10:45Speaker 1: like a Chicago area archery club before he moved to Michigan.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I was born and there was some guy at this
- 10:51Speaker 1: club called Art Laha. I guess he was some kind
- 10:53Speaker 1: of big, you know, big swinging dick figure in uh
- 10:57Speaker 1: bow hunt at the time, and he had this video
- 10:59Speaker 1: he made or he went went up to Alaska and
- 11:01Speaker 1: just shooting, you know. And I remember he pulls up,
- 11:04Speaker 1: he's out with some Eskimo hunters off the west coast
- 11:08Speaker 1: of Alaska and pulls up on some walrus on an
- 11:11Speaker 1: ice flow and puts an arrow into a walrus. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's like the walters didn't even know what happened, right,
- 11:22Speaker 1: He's just kind of curious what had happened. It's like
- 11:24Speaker 1: the walrus just didn't even like register the shot. Remember,
- 11:30Speaker 1: it's just like a different that's what that was, a
- 11:32Speaker 1: real world test. That's pre that's pre Marine Mammal Protection
- 11:36Speaker 1: Act obviously. So you might have a point where just
- 11:39Speaker 1: like the standards have changed over the years. But I expected,
- 11:44Speaker 1: just after hearing about O'Connor all these years, I expected
- 11:47Speaker 1: to read it and have the guy who had some
- 11:52Speaker 1: reasonable things to say about making the shop, right, Like,
- 12:01Speaker 1: here's this old guy, the old guard, right, your master,
- 12:06Speaker 1: the original, and you read and you're expecting to hear
- 12:08Speaker 1: like just great insights about making the shot. Instead, it's
- 12:12Speaker 1: just a book of page after page after page of
- 12:16Speaker 1: you know, five bucks came running by and we all
- 12:18Speaker 1: just opened up. We got order. We don't know if
- 12:21Speaker 1: we had any. Yeah, you were. You went in there
- 12:24Speaker 1: with expectations. That was where you messed up. He went
- 12:27Speaker 1: in there thinking you knew what what you're gonna read there? Um,
- 12:32Speaker 1: But he's a good writer. Yeah, No, I just I
- 12:35Speaker 1: feel like he was just a he was I mean,
- 12:38Speaker 1: what do you want to call it? A gun writer
- 12:39Speaker 1: or a trigger trigger an adventure writer. He just wrote
- 12:43Speaker 1: about the hunts that he went on. You know. Yeah,
- 12:48Speaker 1: it's been difficult for me reading reading Jack. Well, the
- 12:52Speaker 1: reason I gave you sitting on the I was sitting
- 12:54Speaker 1: on the couch next to my woman last night reading
- 12:56Speaker 1: a little Jack O'Connor. I haven't taken it lightly. I'm
- 12:59Speaker 1: reading to damn thing. My brother told me to read it,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and you and everybody. Yeah, the other guy still haven't read.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Every talks about his Rourke, like, what's his name? Ruark
- 13:11Speaker 1: Rourke ar some big African game hunter Robert. I gotta
- 13:17Speaker 1: read him too, But I'm kind of you know what
- 13:18Speaker 1: I'm not into, like was he right in that same
- 13:21Speaker 1: time period? I'll read anything about hunting that was written
- 13:27Speaker 1: pre World War One. But I think I'm just not
- 13:30Speaker 1: cut out for post war post say post war, I
- 13:35Speaker 1: mean post World War two. I'm not cut off for
- 13:37Speaker 1: the post war generation of which my father was a member.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Who and here's his image right here on my desk,
- 13:44Speaker 1: sitting there with a pope and young Colorado black bear
- 13:48Speaker 1: that he uh killed. Yanni was commenting on that because
- 13:51Speaker 1: there's a pack of hounds there and you can no
- 13:53Speaker 1: longer hunt bears and hounds in Colorado. That and his
- 13:57Speaker 1: apparel dates that photo. And and before we started recording
- 14:01Speaker 1: your Jane was talking about how now you know where
- 14:03Speaker 1: we all run around in synthetics for mountain hunting. And
- 14:06Speaker 1: he's like, how did you manage all that wet stuff?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Cotton wool? Yeah, the dudes spend more time tending to
- 14:15Speaker 1: their duds or did they just spend more time wet? Yeah?
- 14:20Speaker 1: And it's all relative, you know. It's not like they
- 14:22Speaker 1: were any more uncomfortable than we are when we're out there. No,
- 14:26Speaker 1: keep mind too like this. He had spent a couple
- 14:30Speaker 1: of years hiking from southern Italy up in the Europe
- 14:36Speaker 1: during World War Two, living in a hole in the ground.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So imagine like, you know, just people who camp a
- 14:40Speaker 1: lot can't better you know, so at that way, like yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 1: maybe after that, like that generation of guys that fought
- 14:49Speaker 1: probably were able to deal with a lot of discomfort,
- 14:52Speaker 1: the same way that you and I will deal with
- 14:53Speaker 1: a lot more discomfort than people who haven't been camping.
- 14:57Speaker 1: You just learned to get you become accustomed to the
- 14:59Speaker 1: feeling of wet stuff of Um, watch it, I'm gonna
- 15:04Speaker 1: do this amazing segue right now. So O'Connor wrote a book,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and we're here to talk about a book that we
- 15:13Speaker 1: have that's coming out now, like right now, complete guy
- 15:17Speaker 1: to hunting, butchering and cooking wild game. Now, when this
- 15:21Speaker 1: whole thing started, I can't remember how it was, just
- 15:26Speaker 1: like it became this idea that I had and it's
- 15:31Speaker 1: the handful of the guys that I worked with at
- 15:34Speaker 1: zero point zero production. We started like putting together this
- 15:36Speaker 1: idea of this book because we had been accumulating a
- 15:39Speaker 1: lot of great images and and information and had the
- 15:44Speaker 1: luxury of really traveling around meeting a lot of phenomenal hunters.
- 15:48Speaker 1: The hell you're doing, Honnie sat in a timer um
- 15:54Speaker 1: and sold this book idea to the polisher I work with.
- 15:59Speaker 1: We just Speakling Grounds imprint at random House and sold
- 16:03Speaker 1: this book idea, and I mistakenly put down as we
- 16:08Speaker 1: were putting his proposal together, I put down the word complete.
- 16:10Speaker 1: So it's gonna be the complete guide to hunting and
- 16:13Speaker 1: butchering hunting, butchering and cooking wild game. And I learned
- 16:17Speaker 1: over the following handful of years that you should not
- 16:20Speaker 1: throw around the word complete when talking about a book,
- 16:23Speaker 1: because as we started to outline the project, everything that
- 16:30Speaker 1: came up, you'd be like, well, should we have something
- 16:33Speaker 1: on this, should we have something on that? And you'd
- 16:36Speaker 1: always have to say, well, yeah, because this is the
- 16:39Speaker 1: complete guide. It should have been called the truncated Guide
- 16:43Speaker 1: the Hunting, Butchering and Cooking wild game, or you know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: the basic guide, but no, it's the complete guide. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: we worked on it for a few years. By the
- 16:57Speaker 1: time it was done, the book came in at seven
- 17:03Speaker 1: and fifty pages long. When I sat down with my
- 17:07Speaker 1: publisher and she kindly tried to explain that you just can't.
- 17:16Speaker 1: It's just very difficult. You just don't really make books
- 17:19Speaker 1: that big. So we were faced with this thing of
- 17:23Speaker 1: either trimming the book out now. When I wrote my
- 17:28Speaker 1: Buffalo book, which is a narrative nonfiction book. Hey, it's
- 17:30Speaker 1: like a book that tells the story, it actually tells
- 17:33Speaker 1: two stories. Tells a story of very involved hunt I
- 17:36Speaker 1: did for Buffalo on a on a special lottery license
- 17:40Speaker 1: that I drew in Alaska. Tells that story, and then
- 17:44Speaker 1: along with that story, it tells the story of the
- 17:47Speaker 1: species of the creature you know, from the ice ages
- 17:51Speaker 1: up until the present day. Very dramatic story about an animal.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That was a narrative book that came in long. I
- 17:56Speaker 1: remember I caught a hundred pages out of that book,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and it was pain and full to cut those pages up.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And then the book's better, it reads better. It's like
- 18:03Speaker 1: I was never writing better. I'll probably I was never
- 18:06Speaker 1: writing as good and I'll never write better than I
- 18:08Speaker 1: was writing when I wrote my Buffalo book. I now know. Um,
- 18:12Speaker 1: I was pre marriage and pre kids. You're smarter. I
- 18:16Speaker 1: think you're a lot smarter before you get married and
- 18:18Speaker 1: have kids. Um. You don't agree with that, Yannie. No,
- 18:26Speaker 1: where's your brain down? It does it? Where's your brain down?
- 18:31Speaker 1: The exhaustion and you don't have time to read. Um,
- 18:36Speaker 1: But with this book with the guide book. It wasn't
- 18:38Speaker 1: like that. Man, I couldn't stand getting rid of the stuff,
- 18:41Speaker 1: and so we hit them this idea, we're gonna split
- 18:43Speaker 1: it into big game in small game. And it was
- 18:45Speaker 1: different than just taking like an exact on knife right
- 18:48Speaker 1: or like. It was different than just separating it out.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It just changed the whole nature of the project. And
- 18:53Speaker 1: that added we had already been over two years anyway.
- 18:56Speaker 1: That added another year into it to build old the
- 19:01Speaker 1: Complete Guide the Hunting, Butchering and Cooking Wild Game Volume one,
- 19:04Speaker 1: Big Game, Volume two, Small Game. A thing that's frustrated
- 19:07Speaker 1: me um. The name of the book has let a
- 19:13Speaker 1: lot of people to to to like write and ask
- 19:16Speaker 1: about like the recipe book, but the cookbooks or butchering
- 19:19Speaker 1: books they are that. Okay, the books are that, but
- 19:25Speaker 1: they're much much more in that. And the way this
- 19:28Speaker 1: thing works, I want you to feel right now like
- 19:30Speaker 1: you're watching QVC. You're watching a show, an infomercial show.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So just try to get yourself in that mind frame
- 19:38Speaker 1: or you're ready to call them with the credit card.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Because the way the book works is I have volume
- 19:43Speaker 1: one in my hand. Volume one is available now. Volume
- 19:45Speaker 1: two will be available a couple of months. Volume one
- 19:49Speaker 1: is divided into five sections. Section one, what is an
- 19:57Speaker 1: introduction than even section one. In Section one deals with gear,
- 20:03Speaker 1: all aspects of gear, with very heavy emphasis on answering
- 20:12Speaker 1: the types of questions, and we get many hundreds of
- 20:14Speaker 1: them that come into the me Eater website from both
- 20:22Speaker 1: new and experienced hunters about gear preferences. So it covers
- 20:28Speaker 1: gear up to I mean, from hunting out your back
- 20:31Speaker 1: door to hunting in the deepest back country. Around Section two,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I don't walk through he's a little bit more to
- 20:41Speaker 1: explain better section to his tactics and strategies. Okay, So
- 20:45Speaker 1: it deals with the basics of hunting and lays down
- 20:51Speaker 1: sort of a working vocabulary of different hunting methodologies hunting methods.
- 21:01Speaker 1: We'll talk about those a little bit more. Section three
- 21:06Speaker 1: is big game Species and Methods. In this section we
- 21:10Speaker 1: have very detailed profiles on fourteen of North America's most
- 21:20Speaker 1: popular big game animals from biologic details, how to read,
- 21:28Speaker 1: sign best hunting methods, archery, rifle, early season, late season calling,
- 21:34Speaker 1: lay it all out animal by animal Section four. At
- 21:42Speaker 1: this point that we're into section four, you're into the
- 21:44Speaker 1: three page of volume one. So there's three hundred pages
- 21:50Speaker 1: preceding this, right, but starting at page three you enter
- 21:53Speaker 1: into butchering, and butchering covers all aspects of of field dressing,
- 22:00Speaker 1: ordering even up to packaging for the freezer. Big game.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And it isn't just like how to cut up a
- 22:07Speaker 1: deer on a workbench at home. We deal with butchering
- 22:11Speaker 1: issues in back country skinning methods for you know, caping heads,
- 22:19Speaker 1: black bear rugs, everything, and I'm talking soup to nuts
- 22:26Speaker 1: or nuts to kidneys with great pictures back at all,
- 22:31Speaker 1: amazing pictures. Because here's the deal. If you normally go
- 22:34Speaker 1: on and buy but like what what, here's one thing
- 22:36Speaker 1: we're able to do. So we've made like sixty some
- 22:39Speaker 1: episodes of me Eater. Plus I've been hunting and swapping
- 22:44Speaker 1: pictures of my hunting bodies my entire life. So I
- 22:47Speaker 1: have a big catalog images, but sixty episodes of me Eater.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And the way the technology is now, we're able to
- 22:54Speaker 1: use screen grabs. Okay, so we're able to grab images
- 22:58Speaker 1: published published, more quality images out of footage to use
- 23:03Speaker 1: to enhance step by step procedures in the book. The
- 23:09Speaker 1: other images that well, I'll get to the images of
- 23:11Speaker 1: the mint. Finally, section five Cooking Big Game. Now this
- 23:18Speaker 1: section is actual recipes. I'm talking you go into your freezer,
- 23:24Speaker 1: open the door, pull out a package butchered, and process
- 23:28Speaker 1: in the way that subscribed in section four, and what
- 23:31Speaker 1: you actually do with it, I mean teaspoon of this,
- 23:33Speaker 1: tablespoon of that. Recipes and these are highlight recipes, proven
- 23:39Speaker 1: great things that I love to cook. The friends of
- 23:43Speaker 1: mine love to cook recipes that we've kind of developed
- 23:46Speaker 1: over time by sharing information back and forth, things that
- 23:50Speaker 1: were inspired by some chefs that I know that I
- 23:52Speaker 1: like to cook. Wild Game was just like great recipes
- 23:56Speaker 1: and no make believe recipes. Like a lot of times
- 23:58Speaker 1: you open up a cookbook and there will be a
- 24:01Speaker 1: recipe like, you know, take some duck com feet and
- 24:07Speaker 1: put it on pasta. It's like, dude, that's not a
- 24:09Speaker 1: rest because you're not telling me how to make duck
- 24:11Speaker 1: on feet or assuming I'm going out and buying it,
- 24:12Speaker 1: then I'm putting on recipes Like if that's a recipe,
- 24:15Speaker 1: then then you might as well put one in there
- 24:16Speaker 1: called peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or butter and bread.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You know, these are like real recipes that you build
- 24:22Speaker 1: from the ground up, not like so many recipes, like
- 24:28Speaker 1: like God bless them. But when I'm looking at a
- 24:30Speaker 1: Mario but Tally cookbook, I mean great cook obviously, you know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: a great guy, great cook. But a lot of times
- 24:36Speaker 1: like basically going down to the town. You're going down
- 24:37Speaker 1: to a high end Italian Delhi, buying three or four things,
- 24:42Speaker 1: coming home and mixing them together, and it's like you
- 24:44Speaker 1: didn't make any of that jump, like you didn't make
- 24:46Speaker 1: the panchatta. You know, it's like you're just like compiling
- 24:49Speaker 1: things that someone else made for you. This is like
- 24:52Speaker 1: real cooking, ground up full balls, from scratch cooking. All
- 24:56Speaker 1: that being said, I feel like they're not overly complicated
- 25:01Speaker 1: like everyone that I've tried out of here, you know,
- 25:03Speaker 1: read through a couple of times, I'm like, all right,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I can do this. The restes lay a foundation for
- 25:08Speaker 1: just understanding how to work with wild game. Right, if
- 25:12Speaker 1: you weren't doing cooked all the things in here, you'd
- 25:14Speaker 1: be like, I get it, because if you do, like
- 25:16Speaker 1: The Big Sky Roasted Head, which is based off a mountain,
- 25:20Speaker 1: my favorite mountain, one of my favorite mountain man books,
- 25:23Speaker 1: The Big Skuy by Guthrie Um, he always talked about
- 25:29Speaker 1: his characters in this book loved to roast mule of
- 25:31Speaker 1: your heads. So we had a great roast mule of
- 25:33Speaker 1: your head recipe where you're basically taking like you know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: it's it's like a it's a taco dish with some
- 25:40Speaker 1: jowl meat. Once you roast the head for that thing,
- 25:43Speaker 1: you'll never look at a head, pig, head, any kind
- 25:46Speaker 1: of head the same way. Again. You'd be like, man,
- 25:48Speaker 1: there is some treasure inside that head. You might not
- 25:51Speaker 1: go and make the tacos I describing the book, but
- 25:53Speaker 1: you're gonna learn a lot about something that you've been
- 25:56Speaker 1: throwing in the you know, out in the woods or
- 25:58Speaker 1: in a dumpster for a long time. So it's meid
- 26:01Speaker 1: like build up ones foundation. Um, you wanted to talk
- 26:05Speaker 1: about top of photographer Jnath. Yeah, Well, starting with the
- 26:11Speaker 1: butchering section, I feel like I've looked through a lot
- 26:15Speaker 1: of other books have talked about butchering, you know, animals,
- 26:19Speaker 1: game animals and whatnot, and uh, it seems like it's
- 26:23Speaker 1: like great pictures without having the writing to explain it
- 26:27Speaker 1: or vice versa, but not really both together. And I
- 26:29Speaker 1: feel like we did a great job of you can
- 26:32Speaker 1: read it. And if you don't quite understand that, you
- 26:33Speaker 1: look right next to that and there's the image that
- 26:36Speaker 1: you're like, oh, all right, that's that's what they're talking about.
- 26:38Speaker 1: There's that that pelvit crest you know they need to
- 26:42Speaker 1: chop out to, you know, to pull the uh, the
- 26:46Speaker 1: guts all the way through the animals. Yeah, no, I
- 26:47Speaker 1: think they're good. And we put a ton of embass
- 26:49Speaker 1: on that. And like someone on our team, Brittany Brothers, actually,
- 26:51Speaker 1: I mean over all those years on top about we
- 26:53Speaker 1: worked on this, she was during all that time we're
- 27:00Speaker 1: writing this book, is operating and large as like a
- 27:04Speaker 1: photo editor to help find and pull out the best
- 27:08Speaker 1: images to explain everything we explained here. There's a beauty
- 27:12Speaker 1: quality to it too, because we use a uh, very
- 27:15Speaker 1: prominent hunting photographer named John Halfer. We hired John when
- 27:22Speaker 1: we're doing the recipe shoots, so we rented a house
- 27:25Speaker 1: and went up for a week and just cooked and
- 27:28Speaker 1: tested recipes, photographed recipes. Halfner did that, So all the
- 27:32Speaker 1: food stuff is John halferin working. If you go look
- 27:34Speaker 1: up John Halfter, you're gonna see like some hunting stuff
- 27:37Speaker 1: that will blow your mind. John halfern shot all that
- 27:40Speaker 1: at the same time, just out of the goodness of
- 27:42Speaker 1: this dude's heart, he opened up his vast catalog of
- 27:48Speaker 1: hunting images and wildlife images. Yeah, it rivals like anything
- 27:54Speaker 1: you see in Nagio. I feel like just going to
- 27:56Speaker 1: his website and just cruise around and look at his
- 27:59Speaker 1: images and um, you'll find yourself just lost and burning time,
- 28:04Speaker 1: you know, and just taking to different far away places. Yeah. Yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 1: After likes to hunt. Man like, he likes to hunt.
- 28:11Speaker 1: But he's even said to me he'd rather he likes
- 28:13Speaker 1: to hunt with the camera, you know, likes the photograph wildlife,
- 28:17Speaker 1: and so we have a lot of great wildlife imagery
- 28:19Speaker 1: in here. Also the gear like so like jump backtop
- 28:23Speaker 1: about the gear stuff. We kind of like kick off
- 28:27Speaker 1: the gear section with a quote by even though it's
- 28:31Speaker 1: just trash talking gun writers, we kick off the gear
- 28:35Speaker 1: section of the quote by a gun writer that I
- 28:37Speaker 1: do admire greatly, Chuck Hark, the one and only. Let
- 28:42Speaker 1: me ask you a quick question, though, Are there any
- 28:44Speaker 1: others right now? You can just name off the type
- 28:45Speaker 1: of your head that you do admire. Did I admire
- 28:48Speaker 1: wore like a gun writer? No? And I'll tell you
- 28:52Speaker 1: why I'm gonna read the quote that kicks off the
- 28:54Speaker 1: gear section. I'm gonna read Chuck Hawks's quote. Don't be
- 28:59Speaker 1: intimidated by anyone's experience, including mine. There have been, and
- 29:03Speaker 1: still are a few good writers with vast experience in
- 29:07Speaker 1: the firearms field. There are also plenty of plain old
- 29:10Speaker 1: fools writing about guns and shooting, and plenty of younger
- 29:14Speaker 1: fools as well. Gun writers, especially those who have to
- 29:18Speaker 1: produce a regular column, love controversy. That column becomes a
- 29:23Speaker 1: beast that must be fed every month. So the columnists
- 29:26Speaker 1: is always hungry for something to write about, and controversial
- 29:30Speaker 1: ideas generate reader interest in response. Perhaps it is understandable
- 29:35Speaker 1: if they sometimes go overboard, Just don't go overboard with them.
- 29:40Speaker 1: The reason I put that the head of the gear section,
- 29:43Speaker 1: I can't remember who did you find that quote? I
- 29:48Speaker 1: don't Chuck Hawks actually contributed to volume two or Truck
- 29:53Speaker 1: Hawks writes this great treatise on the double deuce to
- 29:56Speaker 1: twenty two, most popular cartridge ever. He writes a great
- 30:00Speaker 1: piece breaking down the history and versatility and different ammunition
- 30:05Speaker 1: options for a small game hunter of the twenty two,
- 30:08Speaker 1: and it was great. He's the most reasonable gun writer
- 30:11Speaker 1: out there, and it's funny that his quote kind of
- 30:15Speaker 1: like takes a staff at his profession, because it is.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It's true. If you open up those things, like you know,
- 30:20Speaker 1: like newsletters, you get to be like ten overrated cartridges,
- 30:24Speaker 1: ten underrated cartridges, ten sleeper long range cartridges. It's just
- 30:30Speaker 1: like what in the world. So we try to cut
- 30:33Speaker 1: through in the gear section. It's just all the noise, okay,
- 30:40Speaker 1: because to be honest with you, this is gonna make
- 30:42Speaker 1: guys cringe, and it's something that people fight about in bars,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, to be honest with you, a lot of
- 30:47Speaker 1: the distinctions to get drawn between calibers that, let me
- 30:53Speaker 1: put it different, there's a ton of distinctions and debate
- 30:57Speaker 1: happening between calibers that are just like you really can't
- 31:02Speaker 1: tell them apart in a hunting standpoint. No, it's just
- 31:06Speaker 1: like people like, yeah, I really can't decide between the
- 31:08Speaker 1: then the It's all it's fighting over nuances. You're fighting
- 31:13Speaker 1: over very little. And it's like if you're taking reasonable shots,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know, if you become aware of your capabilities and
- 31:26Speaker 1: you're realistic about your capabilities and you're putting your shots
- 31:31Speaker 1: through luans, it's just like people are writing and debating
- 31:35Speaker 1: about points that are just pointless. Well, I think they
- 31:39Speaker 1: should be taking all that energy to talk about their
- 31:41Speaker 1: damn boots, right or yes, yeah, so much other stuff
- 31:47Speaker 1: about the calibers where it's the bullet construction or taking
- 31:50Speaker 1: time to you know, learn about shot places and wherever
- 31:52Speaker 1: it might be. But I think it comes down to
- 31:54Speaker 1: just like basic ignorance because people started fighting about caliber's. Yeah,
- 31:58Speaker 1: I had a guy the other day that did not
- 32:01Speaker 1: know that the thirty six and the three wind mag
- 32:06Speaker 1: shoot the exact same bullet. If you choose a hundred
- 32:10Speaker 1: grain thirty Cober bullet or eighty grain three Cober bullet,
- 32:14Speaker 1: you can put that same bullet and either one of
- 32:15Speaker 1: those two cartridges, just put it down, you know, the
- 32:17Speaker 1: barrel of the respective gun. But people just look at
- 32:20Speaker 1: one that says Magnum behind it and they think, oh, man,
- 32:23Speaker 1: you know, I'm just like I'm throwing a grenade at
- 32:25Speaker 1: the animal versus just the old Pidley thirty at six. Well,
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's just not the case. One bullet. The only difference
- 32:31Speaker 1: really when it comes down to shoot that animals, that
- 32:33Speaker 1: one bullet might be moving a hundred feet or tunder
- 32:36Speaker 1: feet faster that. That's exactly the kind of information that
- 32:45Speaker 1: try to put in here is like helping people cut
- 32:50Speaker 1: through some of the noise and make good gear decisions
- 32:55Speaker 1: without getting bogged down in details. They don't want to
- 32:58Speaker 1: get bogged down it. But that doesn't mean that it's
- 33:01Speaker 1: like the thing I focused on on these books and
- 33:04Speaker 1: we talked about constantly is there not for beginners exclusively,
- 33:09Speaker 1: and they're not for experts exclusively. Every page in here
- 33:12Speaker 1: is gonna have something that's gonna surprise you because the
- 33:18Speaker 1: books give you opinions, right. You get Janice's opinion put
- 33:26Speaker 1: forth as an opinion on issues, you get my opinion
- 33:28Speaker 1: put forth as an opinion on issues, and you'll get
- 33:31Speaker 1: opinions given as such, given as personal opinions from many
- 33:37Speaker 1: of the best hunters I've been lucky to meet around
- 33:39Speaker 1: the country. The book is full of sections called ways
- 33:43Speaker 1: in on where like so and so like Chuck Hawks
- 33:46Speaker 1: weighs in on the twenty two Yanni tell Us weighs
- 33:50Speaker 1: in on his regiment his yeah, his regiment for practicing
- 33:57Speaker 1: archery ahead of a hunt. How would you put it? Um? Yeah,
- 34:01Speaker 1: just the preparation the basically the summer prior kind of
- 34:05Speaker 1: the year prior preparation. How do you know when you're
- 34:07Speaker 1: ready for a bow hunt? Basically? Like, yeah, how do
- 34:10Speaker 1: you know when you're ready to go on a bull hunt?
- 34:11Speaker 1: For real? Yeah? But I want to make a note
- 34:13Speaker 1: on that all the ways in I feel like it's
- 34:15Speaker 1: so reflective of how one becomes a hunter, becomes a
- 34:20Speaker 1: good hunter on their own because I've had so many mentors,
- 34:24Speaker 1: you know, I can just saw the top of my
- 34:25Speaker 1: head list twenty mentors that have all been weighing in
- 34:29Speaker 1: on me for you know, thirty years, and you just
- 34:33Speaker 1: take a little bit here, take a little bit there,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and you kind of formulate your own program, you know,
- 34:37Speaker 1: and then eventually, you know, you can weigh in on
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, that that certain subject. But that's how I
- 34:43Speaker 1: feel like this book is, you know, you can just
- 34:44Speaker 1: go through there and you know, pick a little bit
- 34:46Speaker 1: from all these different people and then you know, go
- 34:49Speaker 1: forth on your own. Yeah, that's the point trying to
- 34:53Speaker 1: make again and again, it's like, don't discount the information
- 35:00Speaker 1: that you already know to be true. Like I would
- 35:02Speaker 1: never say, like, oh, pick this up and drop everything
- 35:05Speaker 1: you found to be true, because this is the real truth.
- 35:07Speaker 1: It's just different. It just it we're learning hunting works
- 35:11Speaker 1: differently than that. Yeah, and the subject is too vast,
- 35:13Speaker 1: too ever to do that. I used to always I
- 35:18Speaker 1: mean like I saw you shoot run into Carlac bullets, laot,
- 35:21Speaker 1: many things were great, love, I've never had a problem,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and eventually like grew suspicious of the bullet just because
- 35:26Speaker 1: people are talking about other bullets. I'm like, well, there's
- 35:28Speaker 1: must be something wrong with my own findings. Don't fall
- 35:33Speaker 1: into that trap. Like if it works for you, it works,
- 35:38Speaker 1: But this is gonna help you inform your thinking. And
- 35:43Speaker 1: it also gets into stuff like even though we're just
- 35:44Speaker 1: kind of like laughing about these endless controversies about what
- 35:48Speaker 1: caliber's best. We have a big section called cartridge normanclature
- 35:53Speaker 1: that breaks down what all these things mean. When you
- 35:57Speaker 1: hear people say they were out shooting at seventy four
- 36:00Speaker 1: oh five, or you know the difference between the millimeter
- 36:04Speaker 1: cartridges and the standard like three oh eight cartridges, the
- 36:08Speaker 1: seven six two by thirty nine, Like how to understand
- 36:11Speaker 1: these numbers and how to have a conversation with people
- 36:14Speaker 1: and when they name things, how do they get what
- 36:16Speaker 1: they're talking about? Not just because you memorize each particular
- 36:19Speaker 1: cartridge and what it means, but how to make sense
- 36:21Speaker 1: out of the numerical system used to describe cartridges. Right,
- 36:25Speaker 1: Maybe that stuff you need to be a better hunter,
- 36:27Speaker 1: but stuff you just need to be able to process
- 36:29Speaker 1: information better when you're seeing it. Um A lot of
- 36:33Speaker 1: stuff about rifle scopes, defining the terms that you see
- 36:39Speaker 1: when you buy rifle scopes and the terms you see
- 36:42Speaker 1: when you buy binoculars, and making sense out of what
- 36:46Speaker 1: those terms mean, which ones are important and which ones
- 36:49Speaker 1: are not. A section on muzzle loaders, including an explanation
- 36:55Speaker 1: of why you should if you're a versatile, well rounded
- 36:58Speaker 1: big game hunter. And that's really what the books trying
- 37:00Speaker 1: to make it a was a versatile, well rounded big
- 37:02Speaker 1: game hunter. Why you should probably think real seriously about
- 37:05Speaker 1: getting in the most loader hunting if you haven't already. Yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 1: and what look, just looking at that muzzle latter page
- 37:11Speaker 1: makes me think of something because I've just looked through
- 37:13Speaker 1: the first twenty pages here, and there are companies and
- 37:18Speaker 1: brands across the board. I think that's important to note that, like,
- 37:22Speaker 1: we weren't held to anybody's check when we were writing this,
- 37:29Speaker 1: this was done completely independently um. No company, even companies
- 37:37Speaker 1: I have great relationships with. No company had the door
- 37:43Speaker 1: into this book open to them. You will find recommendations
- 37:49Speaker 1: for things across the board. You'll find images of many
- 37:54Speaker 1: different types of gear. It's not it's just not a catalog.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Don't worry about that. A very thorough explanation of m
- 38:04Speaker 1: o A. What minute of angle means, how it applies
- 38:08Speaker 1: to you in your life. Rifle cleaning, A heavy section
- 38:12Speaker 1: on archery equipment, making sense of archery equipment, coming through
- 38:16Speaker 1: the bs of archery equipment and arrows and broadheads. Field
- 38:21Speaker 1: maintenance kits. A heavy section on hunting optics. How to
- 38:26Speaker 1: select optics, what they mean, What you need on a
- 38:28Speaker 1: backpack hunt. What you can do without on a backpack hunt.
- 38:32Speaker 1: How to decide if you want a X or ten
- 38:34Speaker 1: X binoculars, and the choice really kind of comes down
- 38:37Speaker 1: to that unless you already have a good pair. How
- 38:40Speaker 1: to make sense of range finders. Big thing about blade tools.
- 38:46Speaker 1: What blade tools you need on backpack and back country hunts?
- 38:48Speaker 1: What blade tools you never leave home without? Survival kits
- 38:53Speaker 1: and utility kits. I don't even use the word survival
- 38:57Speaker 1: kit anymore, because my kit a utility kit, I carry
- 39:00Speaker 1: that thing I could be hunting like cranes in Texas
- 39:03Speaker 1: or doll sheep in Alaska. I have a little baggy
- 39:07Speaker 1: that I switch out what's in it, but just my
- 39:09Speaker 1: utility kit. It's my emergency kit. And you can have
- 39:13Speaker 1: emergencies such as like a broken gun anywhere. So how
- 39:18Speaker 1: to have a kit that you are constantly upgrading and
- 39:24Speaker 1: adapting for what you're doing that almost eliminates or can
- 39:30Speaker 1: help eliminate the panic you have when you realize that
- 39:34Speaker 1: you should have something and you don't have it with you.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Maps and navigation tools. A very healthy spirited section on apparel,
- 39:46Speaker 1: How to layer your clothes, how to make decisions between
- 39:49Speaker 1: synthetics and wolves. Is camel clothing and scent control clothing
- 39:56Speaker 1: worth the expense? The answer is more comp located. Then
- 40:01Speaker 1: you might think a lot of stuff about staying warm,
- 40:06Speaker 1: a lot of stuff about boots, including my opinion that footwear,
- 40:14Speaker 1: no foot problems ruin more hunts than any other problem.
- 40:19Speaker 1: When I think of people just having a bad time
- 40:22Speaker 1: on a hunt or having to call off a hunt,
- 40:26Speaker 1: footwear causes that. Yeah, And that's definitely a little more
- 40:30Speaker 1: true towards like Western Mountain hunting, even freezing your ass
- 40:35Speaker 1: hunting ducks in Michigan. Right, you gotta have the right
- 40:39Speaker 1: footwear to keep your feet warming, for sure. Yeah, but yeah,
- 40:42Speaker 1: the blisters and issues mountain hunts, for sure. But just
- 40:46Speaker 1: like feet problems kill people, feet ruined hunts. What doesn't
- 40:52Speaker 1: ruin a hunt is that man, I brought my thirty
- 40:54Speaker 1: OT six and should have brought my three hundred. That's
- 40:56Speaker 1: just not in real life. That's not a conversation. You
- 41:00Speaker 1: hear what you here is, dude, I should have listened
- 41:04Speaker 1: to you when you said that I should break my
- 41:06Speaker 1: boots in for real before I go on this trip.
- 41:09Speaker 1: What a waterproof from probably and know how to do
- 41:11Speaker 1: it because my feet have been went for three days
- 41:13Speaker 1: and I want to go home. Yanni's wonderful section on
- 41:17Speaker 1: waterproof and boots the tools necessary, then a big section
- 41:24Speaker 1: specific to back country hunting because it's like I find
- 41:29Speaker 1: that many guys, like in my age group, my level
- 41:34Speaker 1: interest in hunting that live in the East want to
- 41:37Speaker 1: do in their life. You know, they want to do
- 41:39Speaker 1: some bad country hunts. Man. They want to go on
- 41:41Speaker 1: that Colorado LK hunt, you know, And it's intimidating to
- 41:48Speaker 1: like get into like what do I really need? What
- 41:52Speaker 1: do you carry? What is actually in your pack on
- 41:54Speaker 1: a backpack hunt? And I think that this will help
- 41:57Speaker 1: immensely and it's not pushing one product over another. I'm
- 42:03Speaker 1: looking at a page here right now. I'm looking at
- 42:05Speaker 1: an outdoorsments pack system and our carricks pack system, a
- 42:09Speaker 1: mystery ranch pack system, pros and cons of each. But
- 42:14Speaker 1: basically it's grabbing good gear that I like and that
- 42:18Speaker 1: my friends like, and kind of rather than boring you
- 42:22Speaker 1: with the stuff that doesn't work, it's like the stuff
- 42:24Speaker 1: that does work for people, Why it works for people? Um, Stuff,
- 42:30Speaker 1: unloading a pack okay, how to handle big weights on
- 42:34Speaker 1: a pack, how to pack when you're going out that
- 42:36Speaker 1: you know you might be coming back heavy with game,
- 42:40Speaker 1: Sleeping in shelter okay, Tents, bags, sleeping pads, bibby sacks.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Are they a waste of money or not? I would
- 42:51Speaker 1: say yeah, I'm telling you why I think that they're
- 42:53Speaker 1: a waste of money. Keeping warm at night and you're
- 42:56Speaker 1: sleeping bag camp stoves I'm talking for truck hunt, car
- 43:01Speaker 1: camping to backpack hunting. Pros and cons of stoves, how
- 43:05Speaker 1: to use them, how to manage them, how to pack
- 43:07Speaker 1: food for a hunt. A simple way. You can run
- 43:10Speaker 1: into a grocery store, run into a sporting good store
- 43:14Speaker 1: and go bam bam bam, and know that you are
- 43:16Speaker 1: equipped with food for however long you're gonna be out
- 43:19Speaker 1: car camping or backpack hunting. Like just a simple fail
- 43:24Speaker 1: proof system of grabbing food for a hunt where you're
- 43:28Speaker 1: not gonna run out and you're not gonna come back
- 43:30Speaker 1: with a bunch of spoiled stuff. You never hate cookwere
- 43:34Speaker 1: how to handle fire and water meaning purification of water,
- 43:39Speaker 1: how to get fires when you need them despite then
- 43:42Speaker 1: you know, whatever the conditions. A very graphic picture of
- 43:46Speaker 1: a crushed finger in back country Risks stand Safe in
- 43:51Speaker 1: the back country now Section two Tactics and Strategy. Yanni
- 43:59Speaker 1: walk them through section too. This was gonna include the highlights,
- 44:04Speaker 1: the stuff that like kind of what's in there, some
- 44:07Speaker 1: surprising things. I feel like this is where I maybe
- 44:11Speaker 1: learned the most because my main hunting career started, you know,
- 44:17Speaker 1: once I moved to Colorado at the age of nine,
- 44:18Speaker 1: team started guiding alkhins and on the same spot all
- 44:23Speaker 1: the time, and it was shown to me, you know,
- 44:24Speaker 1: because that's where I had to guide where you I
- 44:27Speaker 1: think it came out west and we're not guiding, we're
- 44:30Speaker 1: just hunting on your own. And so you just you know,
- 44:35Speaker 1: learned a larger chunk and ground and had to figure
- 44:37Speaker 1: out on your own how to find these sweet honey
- 44:40Speaker 1: hooles that I was pretty much you know, shown too,
- 44:42Speaker 1: and so I feel like you did a great job.
- 44:45Speaker 1: But really just breaking down like a um a method
- 44:50Speaker 1: of you know, looking at maps, talking to people, plat
- 44:54Speaker 1: maps and whatever, and little tricks to like go and
- 44:56Speaker 1: find your own honey holes, which is you know, that's
- 45:00Speaker 1: something that's an important thing I got into with this,
- 45:02Speaker 1: and I talking about public and private land, how to
- 45:05Speaker 1: get permissions on private land, mainly how to find spots
- 45:08Speaker 1: on public land, because I find that a lot of
- 45:10Speaker 1: guys have a vulnerability, Like you got a guy likes
- 45:12Speaker 1: to hunt. I've had a lot of friends fall on
- 45:14Speaker 1: this trap. Man. They like the hunt. They got this spot.
- 45:16Speaker 1: They hunt deer, right, nicolare every deer in the over day.
- 45:19Speaker 1: They shoot a deer and as their spot. Then all
- 45:20Speaker 1: of a sudden something happens. The guy that owns it dies,
- 45:23Speaker 1: sells it, his his nephew gets old. Yeah, the guy
- 45:29Speaker 1: moved Yeah, that's only happened. Your buddy moves and they
- 45:32Speaker 1: never hunt again because they never figured out like how
- 45:34Speaker 1: to find hunting spots. It's like, oh, I helped my
- 45:38Speaker 1: mother in law's place, you know, and then what do
- 45:40Speaker 1: you get a divorce? You have a mother in law anymore?
- 45:42Speaker 1: And then it just hang it up because they can't
- 45:45Speaker 1: fathom the process of beginning to find hunting locations. Oh man,
- 45:49Speaker 1: And I'm going through it firsthand right now, like you
- 45:52Speaker 1: wouldn't believe. I'm living that every day. I mean, I
- 45:54Speaker 1: moved to Montana, yes, and less than a year ago.
- 45:57Speaker 1: It's my first year lived as a resident in that state.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I've got a pocket full of tags, and yet I'm
- 46:02Speaker 1: looking at these maps and I'm like, I mean, I
- 46:05Speaker 1: have places that I'm gonna go and I'm gonna hunt
- 46:07Speaker 1: because I've figured it out, But like, I don't have
- 46:09Speaker 1: anything on my map circle that says go here, proven location,
- 46:15Speaker 1: so you know, and that's the thing to do. I
- 46:18Speaker 1: get into is like a lot of like not sneaky,
- 46:21Speaker 1: but a lot of things that people don't think about
- 46:23Speaker 1: trying totally. And I think that shows up even more
- 46:26Speaker 1: in the private land section because so many people I
- 46:29Speaker 1: think I don't know why now, it's it's that way
- 46:31Speaker 1: when you know, twenty years ago everybody's went knocked on doors.
- 46:34Speaker 1: But like people, I feel like, just don't do it
- 46:37Speaker 1: as much anymore, and don't think about trying to go
- 46:40Speaker 1: and find a free private land hunting spot like they're
- 46:44Speaker 1: out there and I got yeah, and I include in
- 46:46Speaker 1: here some strategies for doing that, such ASTHM, it's the
- 46:50Speaker 1: thing that's worked for me many times. As you get
- 46:52Speaker 1: your foot in the door with a squirrel hunting or
- 46:55Speaker 1: rabbit hunting permission, yeah, totally that you request in the
- 46:59Speaker 1: winter time when that guy's not getting his door beaten
- 47:01Speaker 1: down by people, and you proved to be a cool
- 47:05Speaker 1: guy who like comes out to hunt squirrels, knows how
- 47:09Speaker 1: to respect the property, knows how to close the gates
- 47:12Speaker 1: a little bit there, it goes a long way next
- 47:14Speaker 1: to you know, guy brings the guy some zucchini bread, right,
- 47:17Speaker 1: cook some kind of cool thing with the with the
- 47:20Speaker 1: rabbits that he got off the guy's property, brings him
- 47:24Speaker 1: by a little bit of that. Maybe even emails the
- 47:26Speaker 1: dude a couple of pictures saying, hey, man, I thought
- 47:28Speaker 1: you'd like to see um, the awesome dinner I made
- 47:32Speaker 1: with the squirrels I shot on your place. And he's
- 47:34Speaker 1: thinking that crazy, some bitch ate those squirrels. I like
- 47:37Speaker 1: that guy. And pretty soon he's saying to you, you
- 47:40Speaker 1: know what, you know, if you you know, we got
- 47:44Speaker 1: room out here, you know, if you want to come
- 47:45Speaker 1: out and hunt deer, you know, go ahead. Yea. And
- 47:48Speaker 1: again maybe it starts with a couple of does, but
- 47:51Speaker 1: then two years down the line, you gotta look down
- 47:53Speaker 1: the line and look into the future. And next thing
- 47:55Speaker 1: you know, he's like, sure you can shoot a buck,
- 47:57Speaker 1: because it's happened to me many times. Yeah. I got
- 48:02Speaker 1: a guy. He's a friend of mine, but he's a
- 48:05Speaker 1: he's a landowner, and I've been out to his place
- 48:07Speaker 1: the hunt a few times. And after a while he
- 48:09Speaker 1: noticed that I never actually really shot anything on this place.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I'd kind of go out there just to kind of like,
- 48:16Speaker 1: I'd be like, I'm gonna come up, but I'd want
- 48:17Speaker 1: up hanging out and doing stuff with him. You know.
- 48:20Speaker 1: That kind of won his heart in a way. I
- 48:22Speaker 1: also tell just a couple of actual stories about stuff,
- 48:24Speaker 1: but also public land tricks you might not think of,
- 48:28Speaker 1: like something I like to do, and I've done with
- 48:30Speaker 1: some success now and then is be undercover in interview
- 48:34Speaker 1: hikers at trailheads, not telling them what you're actually trying
- 48:39Speaker 1: to drive at, but just talking to like, hey, what
- 48:41Speaker 1: do you see? What do you hear? You know, do
- 48:47Speaker 1: you guys see any blank up there? And you can
- 48:49Speaker 1: get some up to date information that if you jumped
- 48:52Speaker 1: out and said, yeah, I'm hunting Dad kept quiet. Sneaky
- 48:56Speaker 1: little things many of them how to read apps, a
- 49:00Speaker 1: bit about using trail cameras, and the main thing how
- 49:04Speaker 1: to access areas other guys are accessing. And I don't
- 49:06Speaker 1: mean because it's way off in the mountains. It just
- 49:08Speaker 1: could be because you know, you're like parking, you know,
- 49:12Speaker 1: alongside of power line and your hammer and ducks are
- 49:15Speaker 1: in this case big game, your hand, your hammer and
- 49:17Speaker 1: deer and some spot that guys aren't hung They never
- 49:19Speaker 1: thought to bring a pair of chess waiters with them.
- 49:22Speaker 1: And the first thing you gotta do is wait across
- 49:24Speaker 1: a couple of big ditches and also realized no one's
- 49:27Speaker 1: going over there. They all go into the other direction
- 49:29Speaker 1: because it's like they want to get away from the car.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Almost almost fought you on publishing that little tip because
- 49:37Speaker 1: I know I know guys that do it, and literally
- 49:40Speaker 1: they takes them an extra ten minutes of getting up
- 49:42Speaker 1: earlier in the morning to in that way. They can
- 49:45Speaker 1: put them on across the river, take them off. They
- 49:47Speaker 1: stash under a tree, and they have haunting grounds that
- 49:51Speaker 1: are just like under people's noses. But people are like, oh, river,
- 49:55Speaker 1: keep driving. Can't get across that thing. You know, if
- 49:58Speaker 1: you hunt white tail or, you hunt pheasants and stuff,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and you don't have chess waiters sitting in the back
- 50:03Speaker 1: of your truck, your awn moron. Yeah, A big thing
- 50:06Speaker 1: about tags and licenses, just kind of breaking down tag draws.
- 50:13Speaker 1: It's the thing people are always wondered about. Breaks down
- 50:16Speaker 1: over the counter stuff, How over the counter stuff works,
- 50:19Speaker 1: How registration hunts work, how stuff like governor's auctions. Are
- 50:24Speaker 1: governor's tags good or bad? We talked about that and
- 50:28Speaker 1: kick that issue a long um. I'm talking like in
- 50:31Speaker 1: an ethical way. How do you feel about governor's auctions?
- 50:35Speaker 1: How you feel or like how to work? Now? How
- 50:37Speaker 1: you feel about how to work what's called landowner tags?
- 50:41Speaker 1: How to play the points game for dream hunts in
- 50:44Speaker 1: Western states? What are the toughest, coolest tags you could
- 50:48Speaker 1: possibly draw. M hm. I researched that little piece and
- 50:52Speaker 1: that was interesting to me and someone that haunts a
- 50:55Speaker 1: lot to really see what are some of the toughest
- 50:59Speaker 1: tags draw that you know most of us will never
- 51:01Speaker 1: ever draw. But I was surprised to find one on
- 51:04Speaker 1: the east coast of the country, and I'll keep that
- 51:07Speaker 1: a surprise for you. Then we get into the methods,
- 51:11Speaker 1: and it starts off with spot and spot spots and
- 51:14Speaker 1: stock hunting, and I feel like this is it's a
- 51:18Speaker 1: basic overview if each one of these methods, but there
- 51:22Speaker 1: are points where it gets so detailed that I can't
- 51:24Speaker 1: call it just a basic overview of spot and stock
- 51:27Speaker 1: hunting anymore. UM got a map that shows you a
- 51:32Speaker 1: great way to already pick your glassing locations before you
- 51:36Speaker 1: ever even set foot in the country. UM. All different
- 51:40Speaker 1: kinds of stuff on glass ng how to how to
- 51:43Speaker 1: use different methods of glassing, whether it's like how to
- 51:47Speaker 1: work or patch ground the pair of binoculars. Like you
- 51:50Speaker 1: sit down and here's like three sixty degrees of terrain.
- 51:55Speaker 1: You don't glass it like you think you'll just sit
- 51:57Speaker 1: down and be like, oh, let start looking around my binoculars.
- 51:59Speaker 1: It just doesn't work that way. There's a system, there's
- 52:02Speaker 1: a way you break up the landscape and prioritize the
- 52:05Speaker 1: landscape and study it and chunks and that's explained here.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I mean you mean you right now just lost in
- 52:16Speaker 1: uh in reading? Yeah, we're just looking at the pretty
- 52:19Speaker 1: pictures binals versus spot and scopes. When is each appropriate
- 52:23Speaker 1: for spotting stock hunting? Things like what do people talk
- 52:26Speaker 1: about when I say you're gonna put them to bed? Okay?
- 52:29Speaker 1: Or how to plan stocks on animals you found? You
- 52:32Speaker 1: see them go into their bedding area, you see them
- 52:34Speaker 1: go into their feeding area, how to pattern their movements,
- 52:37Speaker 1: how to plan stocks according to wind intopography? Big issue. Yeah,
- 52:43Speaker 1: actual actual diagrams and pictures showing that stuff, Like, hey,
- 52:48Speaker 1: here's a picture. This is actual place that I saw
- 52:52Speaker 1: an elk, I made a stock, This is how I did,
- 52:55Speaker 1: This is what the wind was doing. And um it
- 52:58Speaker 1: just hammers at home, you know when you can see
- 53:00Speaker 1: it in a picture like that. How the wind behaves
- 53:03Speaker 1: on a mountain like you always have like wind direction right,
- 53:08Speaker 1: but the wind gets squirreling in the mountains due to
- 53:11Speaker 1: thermals and the structure of a mountain and how to
- 53:15Speaker 1: like make predictions about what the wind's gonna be doing
- 53:18Speaker 1: and things that override dominant wind conditions. Okay, detailed stuff,
- 53:24Speaker 1: but very important. And anyone who's hunting in the mountains,
- 53:27Speaker 1: especially the bow, is gonna know exactly what we're talking about.
- 53:32Speaker 1: This is gonna make sense of some of the observations
- 53:34Speaker 1: they may have had or some of things they didn't
- 53:35Speaker 1: put together. Ambush hunting. Yeah, I love our illustration here,
- 53:41Speaker 1: and we've got to give a shout out to Pizza
- 53:43Speaker 1: Chevski because he did an incredible job with our illustrations.
- 53:47Speaker 1: And it's basically just an illustration showing six different ambush points, funnels,
- 53:52Speaker 1: pinch points, whatever you want to call them. And you're
- 53:55Speaker 1: probably never gonna see exactly what one of these looks like.
- 53:58Speaker 1: But when you look at the whole overall illustration ation,
- 54:00Speaker 1: you get the idea of, Okay, when I'm in the woods,
- 54:04Speaker 1: this is what I'm looking for. This, you know, this
- 54:07Speaker 1: would be a great place to set up an ambush. Yeah,
- 54:09Speaker 1: like how to anticipate funnels and pinch points. I learned
- 54:14Speaker 1: to start thinking about game in terms of funnels and
- 54:16Speaker 1: pinch points when I was a fur trapper because in
- 54:19Speaker 1: the fir trap you're looking at a grand scale. Okay,
- 54:22Speaker 1: how are animals just gonna move across the landscape? But
- 54:24Speaker 1: at the same time, how are you going to get
- 54:26Speaker 1: them to place their foot on a one and a
- 54:29Speaker 1: quarter inch circle a trap pan? So I really started
- 54:33Speaker 1: to think about stuff that way. I also started to
- 54:34Speaker 1: be like, why do always catch fox here? Not there?
- 54:37Speaker 1: And you step back and look at aerial photography and
- 54:40Speaker 1: you're like, oh, man, I can't believe. I never realized
- 54:42Speaker 1: that this power line or gas line connects all this
- 54:47Speaker 1: different agricultural land and the animal can basically run down
- 54:51Speaker 1: this power line and hit farm to farm to farm
- 54:54Speaker 1: to farm, you know, and and travel on a clear path.
- 54:58Speaker 1: And you go like, that's why there's always five there.
- 55:01Speaker 1: It's not because like whatever, how the fields laid out
- 55:03Speaker 1: is because he got put there by his path, you know,
- 55:06Speaker 1: by the best way for him to travel the landscape.
- 55:09Speaker 1: So stop on that. Where we at with time about
- 55:13Speaker 1: fifty minutes? All right, everyone, I know you're enjoying the
- 55:18Speaker 1: Meat Eater podcast, and you're especially enjoying it because it's free.
- 55:21Speaker 1: And to keep it that way, we gotta take a
- 55:22Speaker 1: quick break to thank our sponsors. Still hunting, Yanni had
- 55:29Speaker 1: you don't he worked because Jean he's a still hunter,
- 55:32Speaker 1: like he likes a still hunt for elt. And we
- 55:37Speaker 1: get into how still hunting is different than just walking
- 55:41Speaker 1: around in the woods m hm, which essentially what it
- 55:45Speaker 1: is and why I love it is love taking very long,
- 55:48Speaker 1: slow walk through the woods with rifle in hand. But yeah,
- 55:53Speaker 1: it breaks it down. Decoys and calling another very detailed,
- 56:02Speaker 1: you know, long and and again these are the basics
- 56:05Speaker 1: in each uh species by species section. We revisit decoys
- 56:12Speaker 1: and calling for elk, we revisit spot stock hunting for elk,
- 56:16Speaker 1: and you'll actually find more words written in that section,
- 56:19Speaker 1: you know, specifically you know, to that animal about spot
- 56:22Speaker 1: stockhunning that you do here in the basics section. Yeah.
- 56:25Speaker 1: That's the thing that I want to point out about
- 56:27Speaker 1: the books, like, if you get into the books start
- 56:28Speaker 1: reading them, is you can't just be like, oh, I
- 56:32Speaker 1: like to hunt elk, therefore I'll skip ahead and read
- 56:33Speaker 1: the elk section. It just doesn't work that way. If
- 56:36Speaker 1: you are if you just hunt white tails, I would
- 56:41Speaker 1: still suggest that you read the entire book because you
- 56:44Speaker 1: will constantly find insights and ideas everywhere in this book,
- 56:51Speaker 1: they're going to pertain to your life, your type of honey.
- 56:54Speaker 1: As a great example, Jay Scott and Dark Holborn of
- 56:58Speaker 1: Cobner Scott alfres A in on judging big horn rams.
- 57:02Speaker 1: The way that these guys methodically go about doing this
- 57:07Speaker 1: for big horn rams, you could take the exact state
- 57:10Speaker 1: principles and apply it to any other animal if you're
- 57:13Speaker 1: into you know, judging, you know, uh antler size or
- 57:17Speaker 1: whatever it might be. And these guys have to know
- 57:19Speaker 1: this because they're sheep guides. And when they get a
- 57:23Speaker 1: high paying client that comes in and he wants a
- 57:25Speaker 1: sheep of ex caliber, it's these guys that eventually say
- 57:29Speaker 1: that's the one you're after. And their livelihood, you know,
- 57:34Speaker 1: they're like business depends on their ability to say, like
- 57:36Speaker 1: what that thing is. So to hear them talk about
- 57:38Speaker 1: how to look at an animal. If you like to
- 57:42Speaker 1: hunt bears, and and you don't care about shooting record
- 57:44Speaker 1: book bear, you just don't want to be surprised and
- 57:46Speaker 1: walk up and realize you shot like a seventy pound
- 57:50Speaker 1: one year old female because you'd rather have two hundred
- 57:53Speaker 1: pounds of meat. Learning their idea about how you look
- 57:57Speaker 1: at an animal, how you compare animals to other animals.
- 58:00Speaker 1: How you make these decisions is gonna apply to your
- 58:03Speaker 1: life as well. Or you might be in the area
- 58:06Speaker 1: where you have certain requirements you have to meet. It's
- 58:10Speaker 1: gotta be a brow time bowl. Brow time has gotta
- 58:11Speaker 1: be six inches long to be able to kill elk.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Elk's gotta be a branch antler bull. It's got to
- 58:15Speaker 1: be a full curl sheep to be legal. Right. How
- 58:19Speaker 1: to look at animals and not just be blown away
- 58:21Speaker 1: in surprise when you see him, but how to look
- 58:23Speaker 1: at them you know objectively and make determinations about the size, age,
- 58:29Speaker 1: characteristics of the animal you're looking at. A lot about
- 58:33Speaker 1: drive hunting. I grew up drive hunting for white tails.
- 58:37Speaker 1: There's a big part every year, a few days you
- 58:38Speaker 1: spend drive hunt for white tails. How to do a
- 58:40Speaker 1: drive hunt, how to try to pull off drive hunts
- 58:43Speaker 1: in the mountains where it's very difficult, And then a
- 58:47Speaker 1: lot of things. I'm being a backpack hunter. Earlier we
- 58:49Speaker 1: talked about back country gear. Here we talked about back
- 58:53Speaker 1: country living. How to camp in the back country on
- 58:58Speaker 1: a hunt and not ruin your own hunt chances by
- 59:01Speaker 1: leaving too much of a footprint. How to deal with
- 59:04Speaker 1: grizzlies making the shot. A lot of information about shot
- 59:10Speaker 1: placement for Big Game, about actually shooting and marksmanship, different
- 59:15Speaker 1: types of rusts. How to aim on animals in a
- 59:17Speaker 1: variety of positions. How to decide what sort of hold
- 59:21Speaker 1: on an animal you need according to where it is
- 59:23Speaker 1: and what it's doing. Shots not to take, how to track,
- 59:28Speaker 1: how to you know blood trail, How to look at
- 59:31Speaker 1: a patch of blood and cellt tell what you're looking at,
- 59:33Speaker 1: whether you did a good job or a bad job.
- 59:35Speaker 1: What you might anticipate happening. How to read an arrow
- 59:41Speaker 1: after you When you find your arrow after shot, what
- 59:42Speaker 1: does that arrow tell you about your hit? And now
- 59:45Speaker 1: that it's not just like, oh, what's gonna It's not
- 59:47Speaker 1: just like looking into a crystal ball. It's gonna tell
- 59:49Speaker 1: you how to behave according to what you see on
- 59:51Speaker 1: that arrow. How long to wait, why you're waiting, the
- 59:55Speaker 1: risks of waiting, How to make decisions. Big Game section alphabetical.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: We start with antelope. Each section like this. You like
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: the antilope section. It's got basics. Okay, we have each
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: animal has a bar room banch. We'll tell you something
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: surprising about the animal you do not know. Barroom banter
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: is meant to make you a cooler guy to talk
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to at a bar. Could you be able to tell you, like,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: you know what, I'll tell you one thing and you'll
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: tell the person the thing you read in barroom bands
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: and they'll be like, no, ship, Yeah, diet, life and death,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: how long only live in? What kills him is life
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: and death, Breeding and reproduction? How that goes down for him?
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Kind of habitats. They'd like telltale signs, they'd like distribution,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: So it's your classic where it lives. What's cool about
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: that is next to that is hunting opportunity State by
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: state hunting opportunities map. Where it breaks down that animal
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: not just in his distribution, but whether it's what weather.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Hunting opportunities in a state are widely available, of limited availability,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: where you have the animal but there's no hunting for it,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: and where it's just not present, so it's not an issue.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: If you look at the big horn sheep hunting opportunities map,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: it's all limited availability. There's no easy way to get
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: a big horn tag analope, it's split half the state's
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: widely available and we explain what that means and how
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: to go about getting those tags. Half the state's limited availability.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: You gotta do a draw to get an analope tag.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: It will help you think about destinations if you want
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: to go on that big Western hunt. Then edibility just
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: thoughts and edibility general thoughts on hunting opportunities, and then
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: hunting methods. So early we're talking about spot stock hunting,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: ambush hunting, decoys and calling. Okay, those then get applied
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: in a very specific way to each of these animals. Archery, firearm.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: How to do all those hunting methods? How did that apply?
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Are the appropriate for the animal or not? If so,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: what particular things do you need to do to make
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: those methods described in the hunting methods section work for
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: the species. So we get an animal, then we're rolling
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: the big horn sheep big orang sheep. For the hunting methods.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: The main thing I talked about big orange sheep is
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I get into some details about tag draws. The only
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: way you're gonna hunt a big horn unless you're loaded,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: and I explain how to do it if you're loaded.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: If you're not loaded, how you're gonna hunt big horns.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: You're gonna win a lottery tag for a big horn tag.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: This section is basically devoted to that if you have
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: a life's goal of hunting a big horn, how do
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: you start right now? At what age is it too
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: late for you to start? What age is that you
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: should start now? And here's how to kind of begin
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: and how to kind of think about getting the tag.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: And if you read the rest of the book and
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: learn how to spot in stock and still hunt whatever,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: you'll be prepared when you do draw that tag, will
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: be prepared for a big one hunt. Black bear long
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: section on black bear, because you gotta deal with coastal hunting,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: my hunting, hunting, fruit orchards, bait, pile hunting, hunting everywhere
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: from Maine to California, spring and fall. It's a big subject.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: And our hunting opportunities maps. You know, this information changes
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: because animals fluctuation. The population of these animals fluctuates, and
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: so in ten years, you know these mass would be
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: spot on. But working on the hunting opportunities maps was
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: very interesting to me because you just have no idea.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: You just always focus on your own state where you live,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: or your region of the country, and you go, wow,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: you can actually hunt black bears. It looks like in
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: more than half the states in our country. I had
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: no idea until I worked on making that map. So
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I feel like out of every section when you look
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: at those, you know just kind of give you more
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: of a um you know, continental, We're not continent wide,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: but you know, countrywide view of where these animals live
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: and where you can hunt them. Now, as far as like,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: we got an Appalachian bear hunter got it goes by
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: the name Shing Daddy. He weighs in on bear on
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: how to establish a bear bait station, all his thoughts
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: on that. Then we got Jared Finker, Wisconsin hunter weighs
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: in an archery stand placement for bear baits. So if
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: you're hunting bow over bear bait, how you go about
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: thinking about positioning your stand. We got another guy and
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Idaho bear hunter Chad Bart weighs in on places stand
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: near bear bait. For rifle hunting, what are the special
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: considerations you have to take into a fact when you're
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: doing you have to think about when you're doing bait
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: pile hunting with a rifle. All very different blacktail deer
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Okay range from California on up into Alaska. How to
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: work topography for blacktail deer, the difference be a blacktail
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: deer hunt in September and November. How the animals move
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and use their landscape. Buffalo, A little bit about buffalo hunting,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: a lot about how to handle big carcasses. That's the
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: thing I think of when I think of a buffalo hunt,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: is you're handling a giant carcass. So early I mentioned
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: like it doesn't matter what you do, you're gonna find
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: good stuff in all these chapters. I don't care if
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: you hunt moose, cariboo, whatever. You're gonna learn a lot
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: about handling big carcasses and handling big carcasses in grizzly
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: country in this section that you'll be able to apply
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: to any situation you're in. Caribou. Careful detail on cariboo,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: and a lot about my favorite way to hunt them,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: which takes into effect the funnels. So early we talked
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: about funnels, pitch points. We get into greater detail with cariboo.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: How lakes impact cariboo movements, How valleys and valley floors
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: affect cariboo movements, How mountain passes affect cariboo movements. Some
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: tricks to dealing with air carriers and bush pilots when
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: you're trying to do a you're guided cariboo hunt. How
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: to tell a male from a female, which is a
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: lot more difficult than you might think, because is they're
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: the only antlerd animal we have where the females carry
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: antlers here in North America. Doll sheet a personal favor
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: to mine, But again, the chapter has a lot to
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: do with hunting in the mountains and living under very
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: difficult circumstances. How to get in a position where you
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: can put on a lot of miles in the mountains
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: every day without wearing yourself out. Rick French and Alaska
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: sheep God. He weighs in on the dudes and don'ts
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: of dolls sheep hunting, and it is probably you know,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: it's a couple of hundred words that has more wisdom
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: about sheep hunting in it than anything you're gonna find.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: We get into elk and Yanni worked tirelessly on the
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: elk section. Break down some thoughts here Yanni mm hmm,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: including a sweet picture carved into a tree that Yanni
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: found of an elk, which is kind of amazing looking. Yeah,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: it is great I'm glad, I know exactly Hopefully that
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: tree still stands for quite a while I can go
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: back and look at it. That's in Colorado. A more
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: than likely a um what they call him arbor lifts,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: a sheep order that they usually come up from South
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: America during the summer in Colorado. Herd sheep come from
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: place all over the place. Uh, Peruvians and uh, I
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: can't remera some me. Anyways, you see a lot of
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: arbor lifts on the aspens in Colorado. And uh, it
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: was funny because where where I found this. This is
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: on a scouting little scotty mission I was doing, and
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I think like a week or ten days later, we
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: ended up killing two cows within a couple hundred yards
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: of that tree. Yeah, so that thing too. It's like
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: this book takes time for beauty. Man, This book has
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: a nod towards the beauty of the natural world. Yanni
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: gets real heavy into yeah, you know, Yanni was an
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: ELK Guyau's real heavy into calling, how to makes sense
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: a game calls, how to use game call? Yeah, and
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: especially here for ELK, you know. And again the illustrations
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: that uh, you know, we came up kind of with
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: the ideas and then you know, Pete Zachoski was able
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: to actually put him into you know what now looks
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: like art and you really get a good sense of
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: when we when we, you know, in text, talk about
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: the T booning technique and what that means to kind
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: of you know, basically parallel herd, you know, waiting for
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the right opportunity to to bank in and make a
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: move and try to get a shot. And uh again
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: he put it into a beautiful illustration. Yes, say, we
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: talked a lot with the l khuns where you know
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: a lot of great elk hunters and and I used
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: to be an avid archery l hunter. As you kind
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: of talk about like what's your strategy and you'd be like, oh,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: we kind of just get close to and wait for
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: something to happen. Yeah, you know, like, well what does
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: that mean exactly? And he honest breaks down with the
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: thing he calls t bowning. He breaks down like what
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: that means when you get into a herd, how you
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: can stay near her without that herd? No, when you're
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: there and what you're doing when you're waiting for like
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: what we call something to happen happen and how to
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: help it happen. Um and mainly just like staying close
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: to elk without elk know when you're there. We have
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: a section called a bunch of things to keep in
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: mind when calling out, just bullet pointed stuff that might
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: not fit into the text, but it's just like stuff
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: you gotta have. And again, ambush hunting is covered in
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: regards to elk. Still hunting is you're covered in regards
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: to elk. All of it's there. Have Alena. It's not
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: a celebrated game animal. It should be this Mainly the
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: goal of this chatter is to make you realize that
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: you are insane if you don't hunt. Have Alina. Big
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: thing on moose. Okay, everything you want to know about
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: moose hunt, Alpine stuff, low country stuff, main stuff, Alaska stuff,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: how to gauge legality of moose, which is very tricky
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: for anyone who wants to go do a do it
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: yourself moose hunt in Alaska where they tell you it's
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: got to have a fifty and spread or four brower. Times.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: You have never known stress in hunting until you've pulled
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: the trigger on a moose and then you gotta get
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: over there. And find out if your calculations were correct,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: how to like think about that, and how to not
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: make mistakes, and a very good definition and explanation of
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: why you should never pull the trigger on a moose
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: If you think he's fifty and that's all you're going
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: by is your estimation of him being fifty inches wide.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: You need more than that. You need more than oh,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: he's got to be fifty, um. How not to make
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: mistakes that could land you very serious legal trouble with
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: a confiscated animal potentially a confiscated truck and firearm like
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: how to avoid these kind of mistakes, And that's what
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: information is everywhere in here. How to handle more stuff
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: on handling a big gas carcass, mountain goat hunting, telling
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: males from females where to go, What kind of mountain
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: ring equipment you want on a mountain goat hunt, what's
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: too much? What kind of mountain nearing equipment is gonna
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: get you in trouble? What kind of mountaineering income uh
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: equipment might save your ass? A picture of my wonderful
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: sister in law six months pregnant with a mountain goat
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: she killed, going to show that not anyone canna hume,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: ountain goats. But someone with the right attitude can do it. No.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: One of my favorite sections twelve pages that are just
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: packed full of awesome information about hunting mule deer and
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: some of the better ways in not better, they're all great,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: but great ways in pieces from Remy Warren, Steve Reid,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: Colorado hunter and guide Remy Warren, Rody Henderson, all guys
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: that kill a lot of mule there just kind of
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: give you, you know, their view of it and how
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: they go about it. And here's yawning with a giant mule.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: Hear he killed on a public land Colorado hunt not
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: far from a road. Crunch time hunt, high competition, getting
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Danny's a big thing on wild pigs. Okay, this gets
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: into the politics of wild pigs. It gets into the
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: definitions of wild pigs. Your razors, back, Eurasian borders, feral pigs,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: wild pigs. How it's all one thing, suits scraffa okay
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: everything spot stock hunting, how to hunt natural baits, naturally
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: occurring baits for pigs, shot placement on pigs, the trouble
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: you can get in bow hunting for pigs with shot placement.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Oh humong guy white tail section because a lot of people,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: a lot of hunters cut their teeth on white tail hunting.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: The white tail section more than any other sections, is
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: meant to be a beginner's guide to white tail hunting.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: Yet we did a little piece on the gray ghost,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Steve's favorite, the coups Deer. The white tail hunter Chris
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: eber Heart weighs in on public access white tails. This
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: guy's whole deal, like he's devoted his life. They're killing
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: white tail bucks in places you would not even think
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: to hunt, and he breaks his method down for you.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: He hunts chunks of land you didn't realize you could
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: hunt on, and it kills dude that no one knows
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: her there. And what I love about Chris is that
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: he does it economically out of an old minivan. Yes,
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: the guy just has a system and he hunts everywhere.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: And this guy can roll into a new state and
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: find bucks that the guys that live there don't even
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: know where there. As long as you can find, as
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: long as you can afford the tag and some gas,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: you can do it. The Chris ebra Hardaway. Doug Dern
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: weighs in on his favorite white tail hunting method called
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: the mooch. I don't know. We tease him endlessly. What
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: is that? Because that's a fishing term, you know, it's
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: like banana waite cut plug herring. Your mooch in salmon dog.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: They mooch deer. Um. It works. It's a fun hunting method.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: We break it down with graphics. They've killed some giants.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Big thing about Jack O'Connor's very own gray goals to
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: cous deer. Why is she gett into hunting? Butcher? And
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: you know he's the one to call it the poor
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: man sheet, which I didn't know until I read that book.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: And uh, it's fitting butcher and big game, big game
