Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Looking Within According To WADE NORRIS From OUR LAST ENEMY
Transcript
- 0:00Hi, this is way from our last enemy. We've got a new EVP,
- 0:06as Within so Without coming out shortly. Then we've about to support Amazon
- 0:10from Sweden. Yes you are, I'm my friend. Thanks for joining us.
- 0:15Not a problem. So your new EP that you've got coming out his
- 0:19chord as Within so Without. Now I've just found out only just end that
- 0:23she was supposed to be dropped on August A, and E for Us has
- 0:26been pushed back to all September twenty second. Is everything all right? Yeah,
- 0:30everything's fine. We're just sort of there's not a little bit more time
- 0:34in the oven to make sure that we get the release right. We've got
- 0:38a few things sort of coming out with it that we're quite lining up,
- 0:43and we thought, you know, it's a few extra weeks, you know,
- 0:48won't hurt anything. It's actually a whole new model like that. These
- 0:52is in the love Before I used to just record the album then you just
- 0:54put it out. But now there's so much, so much else to think
- 0:57about. You got to think about your marketing and promotion releases. It's just
- 1:00it's not it's not a fun game anymore, really in some respect, is
- 1:03it? No? Not really? When the other thing is you're going to
- 1:07try to line up shows around releases, and it's getting harder and harder for
- 1:11bands out there to find available venues you don't also don't want to clash with
- 1:17like the Absolute Tired of It's and international bands that are coming over, which
- 1:22I guess it's lucky for us because we're manage to get on this show,
- 1:25which is going to be a massive one. But yeah, it's like,
- 1:29you know, the environment we're in, the venue is closing their avenues to
- 1:33just can't I guess, afford to take a risk on a heavy metal night.
- 1:38It's just yeah, it's wild. Yea. So tell us a bit
- 1:42more about the EP from a musical point of view, broad what are you're
- 1:46going for with it? All? Right? So I just lost you for
- 1:49a second, but I guess yeah, from a musical perspective, it's sort
- 1:55of like the the second part of the last EP that released, we're sort
- 2:00of all written together, it was recorded together, and then the world fell
- 2:05apart, so it was sort of it's a little bit longer to finish,
- 2:12so it's I guess there's there's there's a couple of I guess different sort of
- 2:19tracks on this one, and they're sort of hard to explain. Like the
- 2:22final track is probably a bit more melodic than we're known for. The opening
- 2:27track actually as an acoustic intro, which you wouldn't expect from our Last Enemy
- 2:30ever. But at the same time, it's still sounds like our last Enemy.
- 2:37So we're just trying to broaden their horizons at the end of the day.
- 2:40And I mean that the next one's already got some weird things going on,
- 2:45but that's a fair way off at this point. We'll concentrate on this
- 2:49one for now. Yeah, exactly. But last thing, You're got to
- 2:53always look forward, don't you. It's just let's just how you got to
- 2:59do it. One of those songs on the album bro we are Still Breathing.
- 3:02It also features a guest turn from CJ McMahon from ARTI's murder Maids.
- 3:07So what was it like working on music with him? Well, that was
- 3:12a funny one how that came about. So it turned out that our singer
- 3:15Ali guested on one of CJ's old band's first releases when when he was I
- 3:23guess bigger and more important than c J. I'm about to boy c Yeah,
- 3:30it was just like you know, in the Sydney scene at the time,
- 3:34so it was like, I should call in a favor and yes,
- 3:38but CJ was awesome. It was just like, yeah, it was happy
- 3:40to help, happy to lay down some tracks and just yeah, it turned
- 3:46out pretty well. He fit the song really well. I won't you say
- 3:52Oli called in a favor, like I'm sure the rest of you guys would
- 3:54going like yeah ideo made Baja said app But once CJ actually said yes,
- 4:00that would have been a bit of a buzz. I am for sure.
- 4:02I mean, I mean, we always hope that Ollie doesn't lie to us,
- 4:06but this time, this time he came through. You know, he's
- 4:13a pretty pretty trustworthy guy most of the time, and so we we tend
- 4:17to believe him now when he when he has ideas. I mean at the
- 4:23end of the day, like they were, they've been friends for years,
- 4:26and it was just it was a good chance to get him on the release.
- 4:32So the EP as within so without it's only got five songs on there
- 4:35made, so we've got a bit of time. Why don't you run us
- 4:39through each song individually and tell us a bit more about it. The first
- 4:43one was the text design. Yeah, so hext design that one you'll probably
- 4:48be hearing a little bit sooner than the rest. Not that I'm giving out
- 4:56any inside of what song was coming out next to the video or anything like
- 5:00that, but it's it's got an almost country Yeah, it's got a bit
- 5:08of a country vibe. I guess it's a bit straightforward. It's not really
- 5:13that much of it. It's not like it's a country song or anything like
- 5:15that, but it's just it's a bit of a party banger. We didn't
- 5:21try to think too hard on it and just wanted to get people up of
- 5:25the floor and moving. That's the easiest way to describe that one. And
- 5:29the next one you've got is Blessed the Fall. Yeah, that one is
- 5:31probably one of the heaviest songs we've ever done, so sort of to come
- 5:39after the party bangers. Yeah, basically Blessing the Apocalypse, which we've all
- 5:46sort of been through and we're coming back out of. Yeah, it's it's
- 5:49like a very I guess you could almost say like Fear Factory Ministries style inspired
- 5:58track, but it's gonna yeah, gotta big sort of fist pumping chorus.
- 6:08That one's my personal favorite, all right, And then we've got Still Breathing
- 6:13with c J, which we've probably spoken about. But after that, you've
- 6:15got Slave for Me, which was another one of the singles. Yeah,
- 6:19so I guess yeah. Slave for Me was another one movie we decided just
- 6:23to see what seem what came out and not worrying about, you know,
- 6:26letting a genre of the finest. There's even a like a trip hop bit
- 6:31in the middle of the song. It's just yeah, a lot of different
- 6:36movie samples and whatever we adnoited as we can put in there, a lot
- 6:41of dissident notes, but then also a big hooky chorus. So we're just
- 6:46sort of we're trying to stick too much within the box. We're just see
- 6:50what comes out and hope that people dig it. Just yeah, you do.
- 7:00Now, I've never learned to speak French very well, mates, so
- 7:01I probably get this next one pronunciation wrong, but add undoes. Yeah,
- 7:05so that's actually yeah, it's Latin. What it means to the waves,
- 7:15it's that that's the one where we get a bit atmospheric. And I don't
- 7:21really want to give too much out about that one here. It's sort of
- 7:26you'll you'll hear it when you hear it. It's different. Well, moving
- 7:30on, then shall we say you John, thank you returned on drums?
- 7:35Mate, like you can't miss his his sound Kenya, No, it's just
- 7:40got that lots of double kicks, he likes them, a lot of massive
- 7:46fills. It's yeah, just the typical big drum sound. Could just tell
- 7:53us thank you on anything like he sounds tough and it's training when he's not
- 7:57speaking. Your previous releases above so below it was a massive critical and commercial
- 8:07success, bro, so putting an extra pressure on you. Probably already recorded
- 8:11this one, so not on that side of it, But when it comes
- 8:13to releasing it, does it put more pressure on you? Well? I
- 8:16guess it does in a way because I guess we need to hope that people
- 8:20like it as much as the last one. Personally, I like this one
- 8:26more, but I guess everyone always says that, don't they something new?
- 8:33But at the end of the day, like I think, it's not like
- 8:35a it's like a yin and yang. They're both opposite sides of the coin,
- 8:41really is I mean you're better of just having both of them? Yeah?
- 8:46Yeah, when you say both opposite sides of the coind we don't want
- 8:48people to get confused here, like that they both sound the same. They're
- 8:52just different sides of your personality, are there, Yeah, a little bit.
- 8:56Who knows, Like, I mean, there's enough to be for it.
- 8:58Maybe one day you'll do some sort of the last set with both of
- 9:03them. It's just really I guess they just go together. It's easy way
- 9:09to describe it. Very similar sound, but also the songs were quite a
- 9:16bit different. I mean, I think the whole process with both of these
- 9:20when we were writing them was just not worried too much about it. Oh
- 9:24does this sound like an our last enemy song? It was just like a
- 9:28you know, do we like the song? Is just something that we enjoyed
- 9:31the players at the band, and if if that's the case, just go
- 9:35for it, because I mean, otherwise you just still end up repeating the
- 9:39same thing, don't you know sort of and you go, oh, yeah,
- 9:43we've got our formulas the formula, but the song around sort of went
- 9:46that's just not worries too much about that. We'll see what comes in.
- 9:50I mean, at the time all this was written where they're you know,
- 9:54when I was joining the band as well, so I guess that changed enough
- 9:58from previous previous releases. But it was just like it, let's just see
- 10:03what it comes out. And we're Yeah, like I said, we're still
- 10:07pushing to not really sit in the single genre. I mean it all falls
- 10:13around being heavy and loud and screaming. But that's all. That's all it
- 10:18should be. Under though it's heavy and loud and scream who gives a fuck
- 10:20about sub genres and all that bullshit? Like are you You've been surprised,
- 10:24but I just got to I can't handle it, Like I feel like sometimes
- 10:31we were sort of getting into that lovely position where we've got we're too heavy
- 10:35for the goths and we've got too many sins for the metal heads, so
- 10:41you're the outcast. Yeah, and then that's fine, Like you know,
- 10:46it's a little bit of fun. I mean, if you think about,
- 10:48like how many sins to Slip and I have, there's a lot there.
- 10:52It's just all part of the giant because you're looking at them, you're not
- 10:56looking at what they're doing, so they got the visual aspective takes away from
- 11:00that. But you're right, so you mentioned this, you can't have for
- 11:03a second there I lost you. I'll let that be out. Yeah,
- 11:07And he brought this up before but you've got to like a show with a
- 11:09little little band called Avatar coming up who are making their way to Australia for
- 11:13the first time. And I interviewed oh yesterday. Bro. I've never even
- 11:16listener before, but I listener before the interview and they are seriously fucking good
- 11:22that band. Yeah, I think there's another case of like European bands who
- 11:26are as well known here finally getting out here, but they deserve it.
- 11:33It'sessentially what is it if you ever listened as a song chimp mosh and it
- 11:39just goes off and it's and it gets stuck in your head. And I
- 11:45mean, I mean, they've got one of their tracks, we's got like
- 11:48millions of views on YouTube, like because you know they're massively over in Europe
- 11:54but ware very far away. Well, they've been actually called the world's greatest
- 11:58one of the world greatest ever live bands. That's that's I asked him about
- 12:01that, and he's like, he's pretty confident that they can pull it off.
- 12:05So I'm excited. I'm excited enough to I was going to be in
- 12:11the audience if I wasn't playing. So you guys don't go too bad yourself
- 12:16either, Bro, like a court you in Brisbane when you supported Powerman five
- 12:20thousand you guys, you guys hold your own pretty well. Cheers. Yeah.
- 12:26I mean that's the whole thing. You have to try to make sure
- 12:28that you know, when you're playing live, I don't want to sound too
- 12:31much like the CD you and you want to just put it up to like
- 12:35eleven. You know, it's like you just trying to get the sound as
- 12:41big as possible. And when we when we supported Powerman, but our bass
- 12:45player was sound checking people outside the thinking it was raining, because it was
- 12:48shaking the entire venue, and that's when we know we've got the sound right,
- 12:52Like you know, you need to feel in your chest like yeah,
- 12:56brother, I'll drink of that any day. Letting you go Heavy. We
- 13:01started up three news Spotify playlists through Heavy and rasking all the bands and we
- 13:05interviewed to give us one of their own songs for each playlist. So the
- 13:09first one is obvious like the playlists, a song of yours to get you
- 13:13up ready to party. The second song is one that could save your marriage
- 13:20when you get home from partying, and the third one is the song that
- 13:22could potentially end your marriage at any time. All right, okay, so
- 13:28the first one lucky in party that would have to be ten thousand headless horses,
- 13:35which is the first record. Yes, the one that might get you
- 13:43I'm into trouble, probably a long time coming, get into trouble, and
- 13:50then the one that would save your marriage. Oh it really depends on Actually
- 13:56we have to switch us around. I think they have to put probably never
- 14:01coming back as the one to get injured trouble, and then the one that
- 14:05save your marriage, I guess, but still breathing. Oh well, I
- 14:11gotta personally check on them out myself and see if you're right or not.
- 14:16I mean, I couldn't be wrong and never that was a very that was
- 14:20definitely a question. I wasn't prepared for good. We aimed to please beautiful
- 14:26way do. I will thank you very much of your time you're speaking with
- 14:28you. You're on new ep as within so without has been pushed back your
- 14:33September twenty second. But he's going to be worth await from what I've heard
- 14:35brace So best to luck with that and best to luck with Avatar, because
- 14:39thanks very much. I can't wait
