- 0:23Speaker 2: Somebody for the NFL comes and breaks his fingers collection
- 0:27Speaker 2: I swear and all this wholyvy money next week. That
- 0:29Speaker 2: wasn't the deal.
- 0:30Speaker 5: I'll be back tomorrow.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Don't make me a juggle.
- 0:32Speaker 6: Oh my god, my stepdad was so funny yesterday.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh you guys, I watched this movie. It's really old,
- 0:37Speaker 2: but I think you'll like it. It's about Nike and
- 0:39Speaker 2: Michael Jordan. I'm like, that's not an old movie. I've
- 0:41Speaker 2: just finished. He's like, what do you mean all the
- 0:43Speaker 2: cars were from the eighties. I thought it was from me.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Just get old cars and put them in and make it.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Look at Mike turned it to Jackie Mason.
- 0:53Speaker 2: You want them to.
- 0:54Speaker 7: Tam was on one leg.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm not doing this because soft like just sock and I.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Get an sometimes with some of the cliches that everybody
- 1:02Speaker 4: leans on.
- 1:02Speaker 6: That Miami team is an absolute Cochran because they have dogs.
- 1:06Speaker 2: We do not.
- 1:07Speaker 8: I got Patriots this year's Super Bowl. All right, it's
- 1:10Speaker 8: too early, but I got us winning the baby.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But all right, I just.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Can't get on this level of optimism today.
- 1:15Speaker 9: This is Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Dunking.
- 1:21Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here
- 1:25Speaker 2: at the Last Stadium, and it's video day.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Surprise.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Return just walks right, not expecting what I make the start.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and I had a doctor's appointment eleven fifteen and
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm here, Wow, wow, get all checked out? Yeah, I'm
- 1:39Speaker 2: all set.
- 1:39Speaker 4: All right, obviously you did a lot of lying if
- 1:41Speaker 4: they let you out.
- 1:42Speaker 2: No, No, I had like I've had like ringing in
- 1:44Speaker 2: my ear for the last couple of years. Yeah no,
- 1:48Speaker 2: and I blame Paul. And it's gotten a couple of years.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well yeah, and it's gotten worse. And so they disapeared.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Frity chance that it started in nineteen ninety nine. Now
- 1:56Speaker 3: I'm fine, okay that I'm okay, deuce.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Uh but you know, so I just wanted to get
- 2:00Speaker 2: a checked out.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah all right, yeah, all right, I got my I
- 2:03Speaker 3: had a flat tire situation and I nailed, didn't have it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I had to go get a fix there. So you know,
- 2:08Speaker 2: getting you didn't have the bridge? Don't run flat tires,
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's what I was looking for. No, I did not.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And by the way, if you call town for again
- 2:14Speaker 3: next week, like I don't I need a car like
- 2:17Speaker 3: you know, so.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It took a local place. Yeah, bang it out? Okay, good?
- 2:20Speaker 3: Thanks?
- 2:20Speaker 2: You know what kind of tires did you get?
- 2:22Speaker 3: I didn't have to get new tires, luckily, they just
- 2:24Speaker 3: they just plugged her up and they plugged her up.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Anything from you, Paul, any hard chips?
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know?
- 2:29Speaker 4: Evan, you know, serious football people like you and I
- 2:32Speaker 4: were really more interested in the OTA. Yes, right, but
- 2:34Speaker 4: I guess we had to wait till the.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Right I guess we'll talk about that. It's Duce, it's Evan,
- 2:40Speaker 2: it's Paul, it's myself. We'll be here until two o'clock
- 2:43Speaker 2: talking patriots and whatever else. But yes, the big topic
- 2:47Speaker 2: is we had our first and mind you which just
- 2:50Speaker 2: our first full look at practice with the OTAs yesterday,
- 2:55Speaker 2: and so let's you know, whoever wants to jump in
- 2:57Speaker 2: give us your thoughts.
- 2:58Speaker 6: I'm ready to overreact.
- 3:00Speaker 2: All right, let's overrehacb. I know you love to not
- 3:02Speaker 2: be afraid. Thornton's your man right now, right, I just
- 3:05Speaker 2: like receivers.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Who doesn't.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, he looked good.
- 3:07Speaker 3: He caught a lot of balls. Well, I mean, why
- 3:09Speaker 3: don't we start with just mac. I mean, I would
- 3:10Speaker 3: just say overall, I thought it just looked like he
- 3:13Speaker 3: said normal.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I felt normal.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I liked how we talked in the post practice interview.
- 3:17Speaker 3: We just seemed a little bit like he's growing up
- 3:19Speaker 3: a little bit as shoot as he should, especially.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Going through last season.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So I thought I thought he had a pretty good
- 3:25Speaker 3: day overall.
- 3:25Speaker 2: On the field.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Off the field, it was it was nice for an Ota,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and I think I.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Only saw a little bit of it because I had
- 3:31Speaker 2: a meeting, So I saw like the first fifteen minutes,
- 3:33Speaker 2: it looks like he had a good bounce in a step. Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, he was engaged, and I mean none of
- 3:38Speaker 3: the stuff from last year what I wrote.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Paul wrote it too, so you know it's true. Yeah, yeah, yep, that.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Seemed like a shot.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You only write true things.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Seems like a bit of a shot there.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't know what it is.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I'm going to figure it.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Out later and if I had just come from Mars
- 3:54Speaker 2: and someone said, well, who's the starting quarterback in this team?
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'd say that number ten over there. Yeah, well definitely
- 3:59Speaker 2: not really Cunningham without question.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know there was some.
- 4:04Speaker 10: There was.
- 4:05Speaker 4: There was some talk yesterday with some of the recaps
- 4:07Speaker 4: from from our colleagues. Oh and Bailey's Appy getting his
- 4:11Speaker 4: share of first team reps and yeah, more than one really,
- 4:17Speaker 4: And it wasn't on the radio. It was people on
- 4:19Speaker 4: the radio talking about what individuals had written. And yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 4: I would say that Bailey's Appy was throwing the ball
- 4:26Speaker 4: to what we would consider to be starters at times.
- 4:29Speaker 4: But Mac Jones was clearly clearly like, no, there was
- 4:34Speaker 4: nothing gray in any way. Mac was clearly the guy yesterday.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And you know who wasn't the guy was mcsorlely because
- 4:44Speaker 3: he was just throwing They should just.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Play that song, the McSorley song. But he it was, Yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 4: he struggled.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He's small, trace McSorley is pretty small.
- 4:53Speaker 4: That was a takeaway from that. But I do agree
- 4:56Speaker 4: with the way the way Mike said it with just
- 5:00Speaker 4: the overall operation to me, and this is I understand
- 5:03Speaker 4: it's a little nebulous and sometimes people that really analyze
- 5:07Speaker 4: the stuff they want more something concrete to sort of,
- 5:12Speaker 4: you know, solidify what you're talking about. And I don't
- 5:15Speaker 4: have that for you. I'm just telling you.
- 5:17Speaker 3: When I watched, I felt like there was a Christmas
- 5:20Speaker 3: to the.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Way that everything operated. Yeah, you know, they were calling
- 5:24Speaker 4: the plays, they were breaking the huddle. There was no no, no, no, no,
- 5:27Speaker 4: Kendrick Boyne, you need to come. You're not in that slot.
- 5:30Speaker 4: You're in a slot on this that.
- 5:31Speaker 2: There was none of that.
- 5:32Speaker 4: The plays just ran. And I understand that they're all designed.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I will go back to the first ota. In the
- 5:40Speaker 4: second ota we had last spring, the offense looked excellent.
- 5:44Speaker 4: The offense didn't look like a disaster until training camp.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So these I understand, these practices are designed for the
- 5:51Speaker 4: ball not to hit the ground a lot. That's the
- 5:53Speaker 4: way it's supposed to look. But I just felt like
- 5:55Speaker 4: the way it looked was different than last year, if
- 5:58Speaker 4: that makes any sense at all. And I understand if
- 6:00Speaker 4: you want to call me a fraud and say, well,
- 6:01Speaker 4: you're just saying that because Bill O'Brien's theater and you
- 6:04Speaker 4: never thought, you never gave Matt, but you're right.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 6:07Speaker 4: I didn't think it was gonna work last year, and
- 6:10Speaker 4: I do think it will work this year. That said,
- 6:12Speaker 4: I just felt like it looked different.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Yeah, looked like a professional practice. It looked like a
- 6:17Speaker 6: professional practice. It looked like offensively, people knew what they
- 6:20Speaker 6: were doing, knew where they were supposed to be going. Obviously,
- 6:23Speaker 6: we can talk about some of the dressing up of
- 6:26Speaker 6: the plays that Bill O'Brien was doing, which I thought
- 6:28Speaker 6: was exciting, and overall, it just it ran a lot
- 6:33Speaker 6: like a Josh McDaniel's practice would have ran a couple
- 6:36Speaker 6: of years ago or other experiences. And the other thing
- 6:38Speaker 6: I think that really stood out Paul just kind of
- 6:41Speaker 6: mentioned it. There was there wasn't a whole lot of
- 6:45Speaker 6: coaching in between plays, and like it wasn't like Bill
- 6:49Speaker 6: O'Brien was standing in the middle of the field while
- 6:52Speaker 6: everything was going on around him and correcting guys every
- 6:55Speaker 6: single time out. He was actually on the sideline for
- 6:59Speaker 6: a lot of the team drill portions, calling the plays in,
- 7:01Speaker 6: rating the plays in with the walkie talkie and with
- 7:04Speaker 6: him and Bill were very hands off. You know, Bill
- 7:07Speaker 6: didn't really say anything to anybody.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so let me ask a question. You know, so
- 7:13Speaker 2: they've had how many practices before this?
- 7:15Speaker 6: Not very many?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Right, yes, week too? How like, how did they get
- 7:20Speaker 2: on the same page so quickly?
- 7:23Speaker 6: I think that there's a combination of things, like the
- 7:26Speaker 6: carryover from McDaniels. I think, is there for a lot
- 7:30Speaker 6: of the guys that were here in twenty one, So
- 7:32Speaker 6: you're talking about a lot of the guys that were
- 7:34Speaker 6: out there honestly, you know, Kendrick Bourne Mac obviously some
- 7:38Speaker 6: of the offensive linemen were there in twenty one. So
- 7:40Speaker 6: I think there was a little bit of that going on.
- 7:42Speaker 6: That the language and the lingo was pretty similar to
- 7:46Speaker 6: what they were used to. But overall that was what
- 7:48Speaker 6: stood out to me from an operation standpoint, was this
- 7:52Speaker 6: just the cleanliness of the whole thing. And also second
- 7:55Speaker 6: to that, just the fact that there wasn't a whole
- 7:59Speaker 6: lot of in between coaching going on and not usually
- 8:04Speaker 6: when we get yeah corrections and when we get into
- 8:06Speaker 6: training camp, that's usually what they do Towards the end
- 8:09Speaker 6: of practice. They'll always basically make it a game situation
- 8:12Speaker 6: where the coaches go to the sideline, you know, Bill
- 8:15Speaker 6: kind of give waves a flag and is like, hey,
- 8:17Speaker 6: we're not good let's let him go well, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 6: and it were still there's already stuff like that going on.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Do you think there's any chance that as early as
- 8:24Speaker 2: February these iPads have been you know, have been populated
- 8:29Speaker 2: and it's been made clear that by the time you
- 8:33Speaker 2: get here, we expect you to know a certain a
- 8:35Speaker 2: certain amount and it's it's all on your iPad. Start
- 8:39Speaker 2: studying now, even though we can't get together officially, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: here's what you're gonna you know, and maybe that part
- 8:45Speaker 2: of it is more buttoned up than it was last
- 8:48Speaker 2: year when you had two guys who were probably still
- 8:52Speaker 2: working on figuring it out on the fly.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Right.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's I mean maybe hard to say.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I mean, I think we'll find out we get to like,
- 8:58Speaker 3: you know, mini camp a little bit, maybe amp the
- 9:00Speaker 3: voltage a tiny bit, but that'll be really training camp,
- 9:03Speaker 3: I think when you really figure out how much they're
- 9:05Speaker 3: all on the same page. But just to highlight a
- 9:07Speaker 3: couple of guys, I mean Thornton. We talked a lot
- 9:09Speaker 3: about him last couple of days. He caught a lot
- 9:10Speaker 3: of balls, looked good. Douglas was very active. I mean,
- 9:13Speaker 3: I think that was a little bit juju, not being there,
- 9:15Speaker 3: getting getting a chance time Montgomery just you know, continues
- 9:19Speaker 3: to be effective and they get the ball to him.
- 9:21Speaker 2: He works with the receivers a little bit, he works
- 9:23Speaker 2: with a running back.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So I thought he was going to be a big
- 9:26Speaker 3: part of it last year and I think it'll be
- 9:27Speaker 3: a big part of it.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And Ivan has said Fears, who's still hanging around.
- 9:31Speaker 4: He was there.
- 9:32Speaker 2: He's very high on time Montgomery. Yeah, yeah, you can
- 9:34Speaker 2: do a lot. So it was encouraging. No Trump Brown.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So you get a little bit of a look at
- 9:39Speaker 3: the offensive line City South playing a little tackle at times,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and you know, just these little things you kind of
- 9:44Speaker 3: get a feel for where they're working guys in. I
- 9:45Speaker 3: don't think it's, you know, something you can overreact to
- 9:47Speaker 3: too much. But offensively, it's nice to see Kasiki too.
- 9:50Speaker 3: He's a big, long guy. I mean he's got a
- 9:52Speaker 3: unique body type. Those kind of things jump out to
- 9:55Speaker 3: you when you finally get on the field and you
- 9:56Speaker 3: see what these guys actually look like standing amongst other
- 9:59Speaker 3: football player or so. I'm intrigued by no Gonzales but no,
- 10:04Speaker 3: I should say though. There were pictures from the last
- 10:06Speaker 3: two ots which I think goes back to last week.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Picture of Gonzalez there, picture of Barmore there.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Obviously we have the most famous by history of PEPs.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Shuster was there.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So just some guys that weren't there yesterday have been
- 10:17Speaker 3: around it.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But we don't get any injury reports. No, No, we're
- 10:20Speaker 2: not thinking that he might have been in and out. No,
- 10:23Speaker 2: it could have been college related. Yeah, it could have
- 10:25Speaker 2: been college.
- 10:26Speaker 3: He might have had something that he needed to finish up,
- 10:28Speaker 3: or actual graduation itself.
- 10:29Speaker 2: That's that we've seen, actually graduation next week next week.
- 10:33Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean it could be a lot of reasons.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Maybe you had to pick up his gown.
- 10:39Speaker 4: You know your question Fred about you know, did they
- 10:43Speaker 4: maybe install more you know quicker. I mean the two
- 10:46Speaker 4: things that I would I don't know, we we all,
- 10:48Speaker 4: none of us know. The two things I would fall
- 10:50Speaker 4: back on is what Evan said about sort of I
- 10:53Speaker 4: think more of a base familiarity with what they're doing,
- 10:56Speaker 4: going back probably to something closer to what they've done.
- 11:00Speaker 4: That helps everybody. And just the fact that I think
- 11:04Speaker 4: I don't I'm not trying to be mean and disrespectful,
- 11:06Speaker 4: but the coach knows what he's doing. Yeah, and they
- 11:09Speaker 4: were learning Patricia and Judge were learning what they were
- 11:11Speaker 4: doing last year. So you can't possibly be as up
- 11:15Speaker 4: to speed when you have your coaches learning what they're
- 11:19Speaker 4: doing along with the players as you would be if
- 11:21Speaker 4: the coach absolutely knows what he's doing. And Mac talked
- 11:24Speaker 4: about they absolutely have brought some Alabama terminology to the table,
- 11:30Speaker 4: and we saw some RPO type action yesterday. Just I'm
- 11:34Speaker 4: talking formationally, I'm not talking necessarily execution wise. Obviously you
- 11:38Speaker 4: can't run the ball with any degree. They did have
- 11:41Speaker 4: some carries yesterday, but you're not going to learn anything
- 11:43Speaker 4: but what they're doing with no pads on. But I
- 11:45Speaker 4: do think there was some carryover to what they're doing,
- 11:48Speaker 4: and I think they're probably from mentally most of the
- 11:52Speaker 4: players are at a level further along than they were
- 11:55Speaker 4: last year.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought one interesting moment. I don't know how
- 11:58Speaker 3: much you guys heard or watched of Bill Ryan. He'd
- 12:01Speaker 3: definitely hear his voice at times, But there was, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 3: one play, I think they went down the field and
- 12:05Speaker 3: he was very like positive, like that's what we're looking for,
- 12:08Speaker 3: you know. Just that was what kind of stood out
- 12:09Speaker 3: to me. I was kind of waiting for him to
- 12:10Speaker 3: yell at somebody or you know, get fired up. But
- 12:13Speaker 3: it seemed like he was I don't want to speak
- 12:14Speaker 3: say he was happy with the practice, but it just
- 12:16Speaker 3: it seems like things were going the.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Way he wanted them to.
- 12:19Speaker 3: He wasn't getting agitated, and neither were the players, and
- 12:22Speaker 3: that's you know, it all feeds into it. So I
- 12:24Speaker 3: just overall, you got that feeling when we first heard
- 12:25Speaker 3: from Bill O'Brien this offseason, of like this guy's got
- 12:28Speaker 3: some head coach mojo, and you know, to Paul's point,
- 12:31Speaker 3: he knows what he wants and the players are clearly
- 12:33Speaker 3: understanding what he wants, and so it's a good start.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It's a good start.
- 12:36Speaker 3: You don't want to overreact, but I.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Think it was.
- 12:38Speaker 3: It was encouraging to see any kicker updates. Well, Ryland
- 12:43Speaker 3: had a pretty Yeah, Ryland. Ryland probably would have hit
- 12:46Speaker 3: what five of the last.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Six He hit five in a row into the skinny uprights,
- 12:50Speaker 4: and then he missed one that would have been good
- 12:52Speaker 4: in the regular uprights, and then he missed one like that.
- 12:55Speaker 6: He can control the ball a lot better than the
- 12:58Speaker 6: last kicker they drafted, certainly, so I think Eric, but
- 13:02Speaker 6: I think that's the biggest thing, Like, I'm not looking
- 13:04Speaker 6: at can he make a sixty yard field like I
- 13:06Speaker 6: don't know.
- 13:06Speaker 3: But looking at the way the ball gets kicked.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Yeah, a lot of really like football. Actually, you can
- 13:11Speaker 6: tell that he's got control of the football and he can.
- 13:14Speaker 6: It's I'm trying to hit the hit this. I'm going
- 13:17Speaker 6: to hit it here.
- 13:17Speaker 11: You know.
- 13:18Speaker 3: It's not like going like like I've never seen, never seen.
- 13:23Speaker 4: I've seen kickers in college do that, and I used
- 13:26Speaker 4: to go to Northeastern games.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I saw that a lot. With the ball going sideways.
- 13:30Speaker 3: I haven't seen it ever in.
- 13:31Speaker 6: The There was a lot of barringer hype too.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Yeah, the ball coming off his foot, you know, really
- 13:38Speaker 6: make a sound.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I think the other guy kicked the ball pretty good too.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Corliss Weight his last name, minutes.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Some good hanging times. Yeah, out there stop.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I didn't read any of that.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I did read some of that.
- 13:52Speaker 4: With the Zappi first team thing, any.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Indication that they're already practicing.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Drills with the new rule, the new UH kickoff fair
- 14:01Speaker 6: catch rule and kickoffs, I don't think are you allowed
- 14:04Speaker 6: to do kickoffs this time of year? I don't know
- 14:06Speaker 6: if you're allowed to.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Mean, I don't know if you can cover. I mean,
- 14:11Speaker 4: I don't know if you can cover. Yeah, they were
- 14:15Speaker 4: just kind of punting to guys catching the ball. They
- 14:17Speaker 4: didn't have anybody actually covering them. But in terms of
- 14:20Speaker 4: special teams, noteworthy is Joe Judges exclusively working with special teams.
- 14:26Speaker 2: At least loudly. Now. He spent almost whatever Bill tells
- 14:30Speaker 2: him to do whatever.
- 14:35Speaker 4: But they were on a on an opposite field for
- 14:36Speaker 4: the most part, right, wouldn't you say that they were
- 14:38Speaker 4: on that that that right field, you know, the right
- 14:41Speaker 4: side from our perspective, And he was, you know, his
- 14:45Speaker 4: typical boisterous self. And then Matthew Slater actually talked about
- 14:51Speaker 4: it after practice. You know, obviously Slater loved having him
- 14:55Speaker 4: as a special teams coach and he's looking forward to
- 14:58Speaker 4: getting back into that. He was quick to say, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 4: with Cam and Joe Houston, you know, not wanting to
- 15:03Speaker 4: ruffle any feathers there, but I think it's it's pretty
- 15:07Speaker 4: clear that he is going to be a special team.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Speaking of Slater and ruffling feathers, he had.
- 15:12Speaker 3: A fantastic, fantastic possible.
- 15:15Speaker 2: To say about the league, just you know, this is
- 15:19Speaker 2: not about safety in his mind, you know, they have
- 15:22Speaker 2: a lot of opportunities to do that and they haven't
- 15:24Speaker 2: done it. This is more he thinks getting rid of
- 15:27Speaker 2: the play.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Well, I just love the way he said this has
- 15:32Speaker 4: nothing to do with player safety, and he went through
- 15:35Speaker 4: a lot of different things that would show you that
- 15:37Speaker 4: they're not concerned. And then he came flat out and
- 15:40Speaker 4: said it. It's basically and I'm paraphrasing what he actually
- 15:44Speaker 4: said about the league, but it's it's for you. It's
- 15:47Speaker 4: so they can show you and the fans that they
- 15:51Speaker 4: that they're interested. He's basically called him fraud.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You know, I was thinking about the player safety thing
- 15:56Speaker 2: and until they get rid of Thursday night games, everything
- 15:58Speaker 2: they say.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Is but he had a lot like he goes that's
- 16:00Speaker 3: low hill. I know, I know, but he versus class.
- 16:03Speaker 2: What would you think about on Thursday night games only
- 16:06Speaker 2: twelve minute quarters?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Fred always wants to split the shorten it up, just
- 16:13Speaker 4: you know, get rid of the games at that point.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Twelve minute quarters.
- 16:17Speaker 4: If you really want Thursday night football, there's a way
- 16:19Speaker 4: to do it without making it a strain on the players,
- 16:22Speaker 4: and you just lead into every Thursday night game the
- 16:24Speaker 4: teams are coming off a bye. But can you do
- 16:29Speaker 4: that for all eighteen weeks? No, but you can do
- 16:31Speaker 4: it from like week four through week sixteen.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And then and then they don't play until after. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 2: just like now, well now, but now you're saying this
- 16:41Speaker 2: kind of like a mini buy before and after. Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 2: well that would be the weird part. You'd have a buye.
- 16:45Speaker 4: You'd have a buye before and then you'd have the
- 16:48Speaker 4: regular what you have now after No one ever plays
- 16:52Speaker 4: Thursday and then Sunday.
- 16:53Speaker 2: No, right, I see what you're saying.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they'd have I mean the buye would you'd have
- 16:56Speaker 3: a week off, then you have another, so I mean
- 16:58Speaker 3: it would be kind of in an eye in there
- 17:00Speaker 3: in the middle.
- 17:00Speaker 4: So like if let's say by start in week five, right,
- 17:05Speaker 4: so you have two teams on a bye in week five.
- 17:07Speaker 4: In a week six they play on Thursday night, So
- 17:10Speaker 4: now they had the proper rest to get into that game. Yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 4: it doesn't work perfectly because you can't have a game
- 17:15Speaker 4: every week. And I understand it's all about money for them,
- 17:18Speaker 4: and then they would never do it. But if you
- 17:20Speaker 4: really wanted Thursday night football and you wanted to try
- 17:23Speaker 4: to make it a little bit better for the players,
- 17:25Speaker 4: less wear and tear.
- 17:26Speaker 3: That there is a way to do it.
- 17:27Speaker 2: You should never have any Thursday game.
- 17:30Speaker 4: But Goodell, as mad Dog likes to call him Goodell,
- 17:35Speaker 4: he tells me that there's no data that suggests that
- 17:37Speaker 4: that injury is at any more significant on Thursday nights.
- 17:40Speaker 4: And I would just say, does that data include guys
- 17:42Speaker 4: that don't play in the game because they're not ready
- 17:44Speaker 4: after a Sunday game to play. They can't post on
- 17:47Speaker 4: Thursday night.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Isn't it also just like the quality of the play right,
- 17:50Speaker 6: because these guys are just worn down, so it's not
- 17:53Speaker 6: the same.
- 17:53Speaker 3: It just doesn't.
- 17:54Speaker 6: You can just tell it esthetically.
- 17:56Speaker 2: It doesn't look it. Spoken from a guy who's never
- 17:58Speaker 2: played football at that level and takes to play football
- 18:01Speaker 2: at that level, it's disrespectful.
- 18:02Speaker 4: And unfortunately he had and I know I think the
- 18:06Speaker 4: Kelsey brothers have both said that they love Thursday nights
- 18:09Speaker 4: because it's it's perfect the way it's set up. You
- 18:12Speaker 4: play on Sunday, you have walkthroughs, no pads, it's you know,
- 18:16Speaker 4: you just you play in the game on Thursday and
- 18:18Speaker 4: then you get a mini buy after it. And as
- 18:21Speaker 4: long as there's enough people like that that that speak
- 18:23Speaker 4: that way, they're gonna they're gonna get away with it, Yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 4: I guess.
- 18:28Speaker 3: But good for I mean, he's a good voice to
- 18:30Speaker 3: say all those things too, just as a I mean,
- 18:32Speaker 3: at this point, is he the longest tenure veteran in
- 18:34Speaker 3: the league.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I mean, he's got to be close to it. So
- 18:36Speaker 2: that's good.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Yeah, God was he good though, listening to him talk
- 18:40Speaker 4: like that, Like he was so measured. It wasn't a rant.
- 18:43Speaker 4: It was so measured and thoughtful that you couldn't help
- 18:46Speaker 4: but take it, you know, take it to the bank.
- 18:48Speaker 4: And and I don't have a problem with the touchback rule,
- 18:52Speaker 4: but I do have a problem with them saying that
- 18:54Speaker 4: it's in the name of player safety, right, yeah, Like
- 18:57Speaker 4: that's and that I think that's where where Slater's coming from.
- 19:00Speaker 6: The returner on the Cowboys, I can't remember his name
- 19:02Speaker 6: at the top of my head. He was the pro
- 19:04Speaker 6: bowler in the NFC for returners last year. He was like,
- 19:08Speaker 6: I'm not fair catching it, Like that's my chance to shine,
- 19:10Speaker 6: Like I'm not you know, he said that they had
- 19:12Speaker 6: the same rule in college and he never fair caught
- 19:14Speaker 6: it in college. So I'm still waiting to see. I
- 19:17Speaker 6: know there's a lot of we get questions every week
- 19:20Speaker 6: in the mailbag, what's this mean? What's this going to
- 19:21Speaker 6: mean for roster building? Bill was asked about it yesterday.
- 19:24Speaker 6: I'm still waiting to see how many guys are actually
- 19:26Speaker 6: going to fair catch it in season before we overreact,
- 19:29Speaker 6: because like Marcus Jones, do you want him to fair
- 19:32Speaker 6: catch it or do you want him to return it?
- 19:33Speaker 6: I want him to return it.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I think I think what it's done is it's probably
- 19:36Speaker 4: taken away the you know, the chip kickoff, Like we're
- 19:40Speaker 4: gonna just skyt as high as we can, try to
- 19:42Speaker 4: land it at the ten yard line, because that's gonna
- 19:44Speaker 4: get it.
- 19:45Speaker 2: If the guy's got a good enough leg where he
- 19:46Speaker 2: can get hang time and put it inside the ten,
- 19:50Speaker 2: you're gonna have to fair catch it.
- 19:51Speaker 6: But that's difficult to do off a tea. Like it's
- 19:53Speaker 6: one thing to punt it like that, but to do
- 19:55Speaker 6: it off the tee that's harder. And guy, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 6: a guy like cord All Patterson, he think he's fair
- 20:00Speaker 6: catching it. No, he's he's gonna try to take it
- 20:03Speaker 6: to the house like and that's what I That's why
- 20:05Speaker 6: I let's see, like if we'll see what the fair
- 20:09Speaker 6: catch rate is now pre rule, and then let's see
- 20:12Speaker 6: what the fair catch rate was this season and how
- 20:16Speaker 6: much of it. If it's a five percent difference, then
- 20:18Speaker 6: we're not even gonna tell like it's not even we're
- 20:20Speaker 6: not even going to really feel it.
- 20:21Speaker 4: And then Slater having the information too, you know, like
- 20:24Speaker 4: the injuries were one fewer than one percent, like nine
- 20:29Speaker 4: over ninety nine percent no injuries.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. And then Bill had his press conference
- 20:35Speaker 2: before practice and he was asked about the lost OTAs.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But that's all in the past.
- 20:41Speaker 3: That's already in the past. Yeah, no need to talk
- 20:43Speaker 3: about it.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yep.
- 20:44Speaker 3: He took well, I mean he need to take responsibility
- 20:45Speaker 3: when pressed a little bit.
- 20:46Speaker 2: But yeah, as expected.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I mean Tommy Curry went right at and was like,
- 20:49Speaker 3: you know, should we blame Joe Judges for this?
- 20:51Speaker 2: And I mean it's kind of just blame me, But yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 2: we're off.
- 20:55Speaker 3: We're off with the uh with the Bill press conferences
- 20:57Speaker 3: at everything. Give a nice weights to the camera. I
- 20:59Speaker 3: saw that that at the beginning.
- 21:00Speaker 6: The beginning was as that was as much smiling as
- 21:04Speaker 6: I I think I've seen him a long time. Maybe
- 21:07Speaker 6: it's the off season, you know, it's no pressure right
- 21:10Speaker 6: now with games and.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Stuff like, Can I bring up one more thing though?
- 21:12Speaker 3: I just I got to say something about as many
- 21:14Speaker 3: things you want, we can't make court because I just
- 21:16Speaker 3: feel like, all of a sudden, he's got like like
- 21:18Speaker 3: a monitor, Like I feel like it's one of those
- 21:19Speaker 3: situations about it, yeah, like and now and now, well
- 21:22Speaker 3: we're gonna Now you've got to be under this guy, like,
- 21:24Speaker 3: I don't know, I just wonder what his what his
- 21:26Speaker 3: headspace is like right now, because it's got to be
- 21:28Speaker 3: a tough position to be in where you've been running
- 21:30Speaker 3: the show for a couple of years and now you've
- 21:31Speaker 3: got a big personality. I'll say, you know, kind of
- 21:35Speaker 3: looks like back in that won't fold running things.
- 21:37Speaker 4: He'll be running the offense by by week three.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But I I do wonder that.
- 21:42Speaker 3: And uh, and just the defense, I mean, we haven't
- 21:44Speaker 3: really talked about the defense at all. Havn't Yeah, I
- 21:49Speaker 3: want to, I'll set I'll from Maphu gushing too, But
- 21:52Speaker 3: I thought that their depth just stood out in the
- 21:54Speaker 3: secondary to me, Like we've without Devin, They've.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Got some experienced guys back there. I know, nobody wants
- 21:58Speaker 2: to hear.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You know, Miles Bryant is out there starting, but you know,
- 22:01Speaker 3: look he's played a few years here.
- 22:02Speaker 2: He knows what he's doing.
- 22:03Speaker 3: So I think even without you know, without Marcus Jones there,
- 22:06Speaker 3: without Christian Gonzalez there, they were still able to you know,
- 22:08Speaker 3: roll some starters out there, had a rotation going on
- 22:10Speaker 3: at the free safety spot. I'll let Evan talk about Mapu,
- 22:14Speaker 3: but I just interesting to meet key On White playing
- 22:16Speaker 3: outside linebacker, standing standing up a lot, yeah, which which
- 22:19Speaker 3: is interesting to me. I I kind of envisioned him
- 22:21Speaker 3: more as you know, hand down guy, move him up around,
- 22:24Speaker 3: and but if he's able to play on the edge
- 22:26Speaker 3: and stand up a little bit and they can put
- 22:27Speaker 3: him down, they can stand him up. My my excitement
- 22:32Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 22:32Speaker 4: And my initial thought was, like, we keep talking about
- 22:35Speaker 4: the potential Dietrich Wise replacement for him. Well, I don't
- 22:39Speaker 4: recall many times, if any at all, of Dietrich Wise
- 22:42Speaker 4: standing up like just the cupping, you know, right, just yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 4: there might be like a specific call that you know,
- 22:49Speaker 4: we're gonna try to get him, you know, this defensive
- 22:51Speaker 4: end because what we're doing, he's got to drop into
- 22:53Speaker 4: his zone over there. But I thought Keon White was
- 22:56Speaker 4: more linebacker yesterday than defense. Well, you know, it's it's
- 22:58Speaker 4: interesting because you know which I wasn't expecting.
- 23:00Speaker 2: You know, they've done this a lot in this spring,
- 23:02Speaker 2: like just to see what a guy looks like cerebrally
- 23:06Speaker 2: in a different position. We know we can play inside,
- 23:08Speaker 2: we know we can play hand in the dirt outside.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Let's see what he looks like and how he reacts.
- 23:12Speaker 2: A great point to this position.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Great great point, especially with what he's trying to do,
- 23:16Speaker 3: which is playing on two feet and how natural does
- 23:18Speaker 3: he look? I mean they praised how smart he is,
- 23:20Speaker 3: but is he comfortable?
- 23:21Speaker 2: Is the athletic?
- 23:21Speaker 3: I mean, how how good is it? Is it a
- 23:23Speaker 3: guy that or he can occasionally drop when we need
- 23:25Speaker 3: him or is he know this could be a real
- 23:27Speaker 3: tool for us to build.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Off of and use.
- 23:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll say with with Keon, like, it'd be interesting
- 23:32Speaker 6: to see what technique he's rushing from when he stands up,
- 23:35Speaker 6: because they'll use a lot of fronts where you're still
- 23:38Speaker 6: inside the tackle, but you're standing up and so he's
- 23:41Speaker 6: not necessarily doing anything differently than he would with his
- 23:44Speaker 6: hand in the dirty other than just a stance, So
- 23:47Speaker 6: how far out does he really go? Like, I don't
- 23:49Speaker 6: think we're gonna see Keon White as a wide nine,
- 23:51Speaker 6: Like it's going to be more closer inside into the tackle.
- 23:55Speaker 6: So it'd be interesting. But yeah, it would say June first,
- 23:58Speaker 6: it's one OTA practice and I'm our ready to call
- 24:00Speaker 6: it with Marty Mapoo? Okay, arety ready to call it?
- 24:03Speaker 6: And why they got a player here? Two reasons main
- 24:05Speaker 6: reason out there very first rep of seven on seven
- 24:08Speaker 6: next to Juwan Bentley, which tells me that the coaches
- 24:11Speaker 6: see it. Also not just you know what we saw
- 24:13Speaker 6: out on the field. They have plans for Marty Mapoo
- 24:16Speaker 6: that go beyond core special teamer and things like that.
- 24:20Speaker 2: He's injured, right.
- 24:21Speaker 6: He's in a non contact jersey, but still participating in
- 24:24Speaker 6: some of the stuff that they were doing. And it
- 24:26Speaker 6: just you can't help but stand out to you and
- 24:29Speaker 6: at these types of things when they break the huddle
- 24:32Speaker 6: for the very very first seven on seven rep with
- 24:34Speaker 6: Jonathan Jones and Juan Bentley and the starting defensive line
- 24:38Speaker 6: and the rookie linebacker is right next to Bentley, like that,
- 24:42Speaker 6: not Mac Wilson, not one of these other guys that's
- 24:45Speaker 6: been around to five whatever it was Marty Mapoo. And
- 24:48Speaker 6: I think the biggest thing all this is passing right there.
- 24:50Speaker 6: You don't do any real running in these camps. And
- 24:54Speaker 6: his eye discipline, like he doesn't look like he's panicked
- 24:58Speaker 6: or like not knowing things are coming from him. And
- 25:01Speaker 6: from a route coverage standpoint, and he was on the ball,
- 25:05Speaker 6: like his eyes were always in the right place.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He looked calm, and you could tell that from where
- 25:09Speaker 2: you were standing.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Oh yeah, yeah, you can see like you know, with
- 25:14Speaker 6: his his it's really his head gear, right, his whole head,
- 25:16Speaker 6: Like you can tell, Okay, he's seeing the crossing route
- 25:19Speaker 6: coming here, then he's passing that off, and then he's
- 25:21Speaker 6: picking up the next receiver in the succession of his
- 25:24Speaker 6: basic basically a progression, but from his point of view.
- 25:28Speaker 6: And then when he sees where the ball comes out,
- 25:30Speaker 6: that trigger is like immediate. And I I just from
- 25:34Speaker 6: where I was sitting, I could see it right away,
- 25:37Speaker 6: and I think he's they got something.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Could he be that sideline to sideline linebacker I crave.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I think he certainly can be that in passing situations.
- 25:45Speaker 6: I don't know if he's going to be an every
- 25:47Speaker 6: down linebacker as a rookie, but in those sub packages
- 25:50Speaker 6: as a coverage guy that comes in on second and long,
- 25:53Speaker 6: third down things like that. I think that's the plan
- 25:56Speaker 6: for sure, and that's what this time of year is,
- 25:58Speaker 6: when you really start to work that out. Yeah, ready
- 26:01Speaker 6: to call it.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it looked light.
- 26:02Speaker 3: I mean, he looks thin. I mean he doesn't look
- 26:04Speaker 3: like their usual kind of guy.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I don't care about that.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Small yeah, but yeah, I agree with his presence. And
- 26:11Speaker 4: that was one of the most noteworthy things I saw
- 26:13Speaker 4: on defense. I don't I don't get into any of
- 26:17Speaker 4: this other stuff at this time of year, you know,
- 26:19Speaker 4: I kind of am looking at individual players and what
- 26:22Speaker 4: they look like. Like Mike I thought you talked about
- 26:23Speaker 4: Mike ka SICKI earlier. Yeah, you get to see he's
- 26:25Speaker 4: he is long, you know, and you know I've seen
- 26:28Speaker 4: Hi play from Miami.
- 26:29Speaker 2: You kind of know.
- 26:29Speaker 4: But now you see him kind I don't know why,
- 26:31Speaker 4: Maybe it strikes you a little bit different the kind
- 26:33Speaker 4: of I thought key On White, same kind of thing,
- 26:36Speaker 4: like whoa, he fills out the uniform. You know, I
- 26:38Speaker 4: met him in person.
- 26:39Speaker 2: He's scary, dude.
- 26:40Speaker 4: He's a big guy, you know, so that's the kind
- 26:42Speaker 4: of stuff I thought we we kind of talked about
- 26:44Speaker 4: in some other individuals Kevin Harris, I think the three
- 26:47Speaker 4: of us all agree. We thought he looked a little svelt,
- 26:50Speaker 4: looked like he dropped a few LB's. He's listed exactly
- 26:53Speaker 4: the same as he was last year. We'll see if
- 26:55Speaker 4: we get updates as the summer goes on with some
- 26:58Speaker 4: of those numbers. But I thought he was was quick
- 27:01Speaker 4: and looked uh and looked quick, looked good.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I got.
- 27:04Speaker 4: I thought he looked quick, you know, just not talking
- 27:06Speaker 4: about performance because I think a lot of this and
- 27:09Speaker 4: this is why and this is not to take a
- 27:10Speaker 4: shot at Evan here with with MAPU, because I think
- 27:13Speaker 4: it is absolutely noteworthy. And I concluded my blog too
- 27:16Speaker 4: that he was out there with Bentley right away. Clearly
- 27:19Speaker 4: they have designs on him beyond the special teams thing
- 27:23Speaker 4: that I think he'll end up being. But I think
- 27:27Speaker 4: a lot of this stuff that they do with this
- 27:28Speaker 4: time of year is very scripted, and I'm not like,
- 27:32Speaker 4: that's why I'm not. Bill says all the time, it's
- 27:35Speaker 4: not for evaluation, you know, it's it's all it's all teaching.
- 27:39Speaker 4: And the other thing that Fred brought up earlier with
- 27:43Speaker 4: you know how Bill likes to start guys doing different things.
- 27:45Speaker 4: I think you know that that's certainly a possibility for
- 27:49Speaker 4: Keon White, certainly a possibility for Citi Sao. You know, like,
- 27:52Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure he could play guard. Let's let's see
- 27:54Speaker 4: if he can actually play tackle, you know whatever. We'll
- 27:56Speaker 4: line him up out there and do some of those things.
- 27:59Speaker 4: And then Bill yesterday, when he talked to us before
- 28:01Speaker 4: he went out there, he really specifically said, how much
- 28:05Speaker 4: you know, changing and mixing and matching they're gonna do.
- 28:08Speaker 4: You know, guys might be out there together for one play,
- 28:10Speaker 4: might be five plays. Don't don't read anything into it.
- 28:13Speaker 4: So I'm trying to listen to him. I always say,
- 28:15Speaker 4: go by what he does and not by what he says,
- 28:17Speaker 4: but I'm trying to do both at this time of year.
- 28:20Speaker 4: But without question, what Evan's talking about with Mapu is
- 28:24Speaker 4: it was noteworthy, just because I think exacerbated by the
- 28:28Speaker 4: fact that he's wearing a red non contact jersey, so
- 28:32Speaker 4: he you know, he's not even fully cleared yet, would
- 28:35Speaker 4: be my guess. And they want to get him out there,
- 28:39Speaker 4: tells me they want to get him as much reps
- 28:41Speaker 4: and experience just to get him up the speed as
- 28:43Speaker 4: they can.
- 28:44Speaker 6: He just moved well. And I'm not like looking at like,
- 28:46Speaker 6: oh he made.
- 28:47Speaker 3: This tackle past breakout.
- 28:49Speaker 6: I didn't say, but I think mentally like they all
- 28:51Speaker 6: all the players, you know, talking to Juwan Bentley a
- 28:54Speaker 6: lot yesterday after practice, he said, this is it's all
- 28:57Speaker 6: about mental reps this time of year, right, like what
- 29:00Speaker 6: what are we supposed to be doing? What are our keys,
- 29:02Speaker 6: what are our reads? You know, what are we looking at?
- 29:04Speaker 6: And I think with Mapu, you could tell that his
- 29:08Speaker 6: eyes were in going to the right places and his
- 29:10Speaker 6: body was going in the right directions. And that's not
- 29:14Speaker 6: always the case, Like sometimes you get out there and
- 29:16Speaker 6: these guys are lost or they're just covering grass and
- 29:19Speaker 6: they're not actually influencing the play at all. And I
- 29:21Speaker 6: didn't think that that was the case at all with him.
- 29:24Speaker 6: But the biggest thing was was that he was out
- 29:25Speaker 6: there and how involved he was in the top package
- 29:28Speaker 6: of the defense already at this time of year is
- 29:31Speaker 6: usually very telling, especially for a rookie.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Hope he's healthy.
- 29:35Speaker 4: So I kind of I kind of did that that
- 29:38Speaker 4: sort of disclaimer because at this time he hit the
- 29:41Speaker 4: three of us, you know, we kind of get inundated
- 29:44Speaker 4: with you know what about Trey Nixon last year, Like,
- 29:48Speaker 4: I totally get it. I understand, we understand what this
- 29:52Speaker 4: time of year is. We're just trying to tell you
- 29:53Speaker 4: what we saw yesterday, you know, and these are some
- 29:55Speaker 4: of the guys that stood out for us yesterday.
- 29:58Speaker 2: In Max post practice press conference, he used the phrase
- 30:03Speaker 2: we're on the same page at least once, maybe more.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I don't think that's any coincidence normal, I think.
- 30:11Speaker 6: One, yeah, yeah.
- 30:12Speaker 4: My takeaway was the word trust yeah four times. Yeah,
- 30:16Speaker 4: there was three trusts and a trustworthy. I went back
- 30:20Speaker 4: and looked because that that kept bringing my ear and
- 30:23Speaker 4: I think I think the message that he was trying
- 30:25Speaker 4: to portray yesterday was that he's trying to earn back
- 30:31Speaker 4: the trust of the locker room and the coaching staff.
- 30:34Speaker 4: And in turn, I believe he's also saying, and I
- 30:39Speaker 4: need to learn how to trust them because I didn't
- 30:42Speaker 4: last year.
- 30:43Speaker 2: It's a two way street, two way street.
- 30:45Speaker 3: The clean slate is a two way street, a bad relationship.
- 30:48Speaker 3: You've got to learn to trust again, right, we've all
- 30:50Speaker 3: been through that.
- 30:52Speaker 4: So well, Mike, what are you trying to say so.
- 30:55Speaker 2: As a result, sports illustrators come out and said that
- 30:58Speaker 2: the Patriots are going to win the age. I know,
- 30:59Speaker 2: Connor or let's go see that.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Let's go guy special.
- 31:03Speaker 6: If Ota practices translated, and then then maybe, yeah.
- 31:08Speaker 2: At least our quarterback is out there. The Jets quarterback
- 31:12Speaker 2: hasn't even out there yet.
- 31:13Speaker 3: It's too busy going to Taylor Swift Booty just a
- 31:17Speaker 3: quick comp. I mean, we saw a lot of Douglas yesterday,
- 31:19Speaker 3: not a lot of Booty.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 6: And I would also like temper the expectations for to
- 31:23Speaker 6: Mario Douglas for the time being. The people that he
- 31:26Speaker 6: was out there with is important as much as the
- 31:30Speaker 6: fact that he was out there. It's great that he
- 31:32Speaker 6: was out there and that he was involved and they
- 31:34Speaker 6: were trying to get him up to speed in certain
- 31:37Speaker 6: things that he's gonna maybe be doing down the road.
- 31:39Speaker 6: But let me just say this, when you're out there
- 31:42Speaker 6: with Roley Webb and that's and that's who you're going
- 31:45Speaker 6: through the rep with like that, that I think is
- 31:48Speaker 6: an indicator that let's let's tap the brakes a little bit.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Like if you want to get excited, get excited about Taekwon,
- 31:53Speaker 6: like the you know, a guy like to Mario Douglas
- 31:55Speaker 6: for right now, is still in that O T a
- 31:59Speaker 6: rookie o T for me.
- 32:00Speaker 3: We didn't get to see Roley Webb last year because
- 32:02Speaker 3: he came in the middle of the year. But my
- 32:04Speaker 3: reaction was like, oh, he's a receiver. Like I had
- 32:06Speaker 3: no idea. He was like, like it was so funny
- 32:08Speaker 3: because if.
- 32:09Speaker 2: You're looking to ensure your home car road, I mean,
- 32:12Speaker 2: that's what it is.
- 32:13Speaker 3: The other thing though, I just wanted to say though,
- 32:16Speaker 3: is uh, you know, maybe the experience at the Shrine
- 32:19Speaker 3: Bowl helped Douglas a little bit. Yeah, and like he
- 32:22Speaker 3: just has a little bit more of a grasp of
- 32:24Speaker 3: what's going on at this point because I did see
- 32:26Speaker 3: some good things out of out of Booty just in
- 32:28Speaker 3: some of you know, we catch some of the videos
- 32:29Speaker 3: and after practice the things you might have missed. But
- 32:31Speaker 3: it was weird because a long long portion like we're
- 32:33Speaker 3: seeing a lot of Douglas out there, but what Booty
- 32:35Speaker 3: been we haven't.
- 32:35Speaker 6: Really I don't know.
- 32:36Speaker 3: If you're a hot person, Yeah, that's another potential factor too. Yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 3: all the Lambines were trying to like negotiate around a practice.
- 32:43Speaker 6: Of injuries, and you know, no, look, I thought that Douglas.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Douglas did what they asked him to do. That It
- 32:50Speaker 6: wasn't like he went out there and you were like,
- 32:52Speaker 6: oh my god, this guy's going to be a star.
- 32:53Speaker 6: But he he he was where he was supposed to
- 32:56Speaker 6: be and he caught the ball right, And I think
- 32:58Speaker 6: the one thing that we knew he was small. But
- 33:01Speaker 6: I wonder if you know, sort of like a slot
- 33:04Speaker 6: like almost like how they're envisioning using time Montgomery, like
- 33:07Speaker 6: that might end up being where he is long term,
- 33:11Speaker 6: is more of like a slot, a gadget, maybe even
- 33:14Speaker 6: out of the backfield a little bit. I do wonder
- 33:17Speaker 6: with his size if he's ever going to develop into
- 33:21Speaker 6: a true down the field receiver in the NFL like
- 33:25Speaker 6: he was in college. But he still got that juice
- 33:28Speaker 6: to be able to add some things underneath the defense
- 33:31Speaker 6: that might be important, Like if you get him matched
- 33:33Speaker 6: up in space against a linebacker like coming out of
- 33:36Speaker 6: the backfield, like he's gonna win that matchup.
- 33:38Speaker 3: So I will see.
- 33:39Speaker 6: I'm intrigued. But I would just mentioned with the receivers,
- 33:43Speaker 6: they only have like six guys out there right now
- 33:46Speaker 6: because Juju wasn't there, so Roley Webb has to take
- 33:50Speaker 6: reps at receiver. They're a little thin there, and I
- 33:53Speaker 6: know everybody's gonna go to DeAndre Hopkins and be like, well,
- 33:57Speaker 6: we might not be thin there, right, But I think
- 34:00Speaker 6: that even just adding another body there for training camp
- 34:03Speaker 6: is in play. I think they only have like seven
- 34:05Speaker 6: guys on the roster right now at that spots. They're
- 34:08Speaker 6: a little light there.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Were you counting Elie Cunningham as a receiver?
- 34:11Speaker 6: I guess we are now, But like, are we counting
- 34:13Speaker 6: Malie Cunningham as a receiver because that's actually the plan,
- 34:17Speaker 6: right or because they just don't have any receivers, Like
- 34:20Speaker 6: they really don't have a ton of wide receivers for
- 34:21Speaker 6: this time of year.
- 34:22Speaker 4: That could be another one of you with things ready, Yeah,
- 34:24Speaker 4: Malie Cunningham, you know they probably think he's going to
- 34:27Speaker 4: be perfect for a scout team quarterback, right, Yeah, Let's
- 34:31Speaker 4: see if he can give you anything as a receiver.
- 34:34Speaker 3: That seems like the theme that we're kind of tying
- 34:36Speaker 3: all together is now is the time to just kind
- 34:38Speaker 3: of put guys in positions.
- 34:39Speaker 2: It always has Why not? Why are they going to
- 34:41Speaker 2: stop now? They have always done it.
- 34:43Speaker 4: The Eugene Wilson year. You know he played and I
- 34:46Speaker 4: always forget which is which first, but he played corner
- 34:50Speaker 4: in college and then and they I mean safety in
- 34:52Speaker 4: college and they put him at corner in the spring
- 34:55Speaker 4: and completely switched it when the season started.
- 34:58Speaker 2: So it's like, what which of these things are going
- 34:59Speaker 2: to stick?
- 35:00Speaker 4: Because we know you can do what Brandon Merriweather was
- 35:02Speaker 4: the same thing. You played both and then you figure
- 35:05Speaker 4: it out. You know what's what he's more valuable at?
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, eight five to five Pats five hundred
- 35:11Speaker 2: is the A sticket hotline, web radio at Patriots dot
- 35:14Speaker 2: com is the email address. Let's get to some of
- 35:17Speaker 2: the phone calls here. We'll start with Patty and agawam.
- 35:20Speaker 2: What's up Patty, top gentlemen.
- 35:25Speaker 12: So I wanted to touch on a couple of things.
- 35:27Speaker 12: First thing, heavan could corroborate this because I said this
- 35:31Speaker 12: two weeks ago on Catch twenty two, and I'm not
- 35:34Speaker 12: overreacting to it from what I read yesterday, but I
- 35:36Speaker 12: did predict Mac Jones to be the breakout player of
- 35:39Speaker 12: this year the Patriots team. Okay, and Paul you kind
- 35:43Speaker 12: of touched on what he was saying last year, and
- 35:47Speaker 12: one of the things he said last year about the
- 35:49Speaker 12: coaching staff was we're all learning together, which is you know,
- 35:52Speaker 12: kind of dominos if you think about it, and just
- 35:56Speaker 12: hearing him talk and talking about right, how he there
- 36:00Speaker 12: is trust and everyone seems to be on the same page.
- 36:04Speaker 12: I mean, it's refreshing.
- 36:05Speaker 2: There's a clear delineation. Now Bill O'Brien will be the
- 36:08Speaker 2: teacher and you will be learning.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Well, that didn't take his press briefing as being as
- 36:13Speaker 4: hopefully positive as everybody, because a lot of other people
- 36:16Speaker 4: did to put it out.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Matt mac jones.
- 36:17Speaker 4: I thought the first thing he said to he was
- 36:19Speaker 4: referencing like, you know, oh, it's normal now, like he's
- 36:23Speaker 4: still talking.
- 36:23Speaker 3: That's positive, still talking about last year.
- 36:26Speaker 13: I know.
- 36:26Speaker 2: But if he thinks it's normal and if he's happy,
- 36:28Speaker 2: that's that's half the job. I don't know.
- 36:30Speaker 6: They don't want him to talk about next last year,
- 36:33Speaker 6: then maybe the head coach would stopped talking about last year.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Well the head coach said that's in the past, said
- 36:38Speaker 4: it about seven times yesterday.
- 36:40Speaker 3: It actually was like yesterday, you know.
- 36:42Speaker 2: What they say, happy QB, happy life, right, I Patty,
- 36:46Speaker 2: I don't know what you do.
- 36:46Speaker 4: I mean that's yeah, the whole like breakout thing. I
- 36:49Speaker 4: think mac Jones will be much better than he was
- 36:52Speaker 4: last year. Like, does that qualify as a breakout.
- 36:57Speaker 6: If he was better than twenty one?
- 36:58Speaker 4: Are we saying that.
- 36:59Speaker 2: He's going to I was going to break out his
- 37:01Speaker 2: four thousand yards and over thirty touchdowns.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Or or emerging as one of the better quarterbacks in
- 37:05Speaker 4: the league. Yeah, Like yeah, yeah, Like I think if
- 37:09Speaker 4: he returns.
- 37:09Speaker 2: To what he was, really a breakout.
- 37:12Speaker 6: But he did mention, and I think the best part
- 37:14Speaker 6: about the presser for him was that he did mention
- 37:17Speaker 6: that he's going to be a sponge and that O'Brien
- 37:19Speaker 6: has been to all these different stops. And he put
- 37:22Speaker 6: O'Brien with Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin and like some
- 37:26Speaker 6: of the other, you know, really big time offensive coordinators.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Because he respected Yeah he didn't.
- 37:32Speaker 6: He was talking about Alabama at the time, so he
- 37:33Speaker 6: didn't mention McDaniels, but I'm sure he would put McDaniels
- 37:36Speaker 6: in the same dable. It was another one, Mike Loski,
- 37:40Speaker 6: who's a big time offensive offensive coach. So he mentioned
- 37:44Speaker 6: all these guys with the same breath of Bill O'Brien.
- 37:47Speaker 6: So I do think he totally is embracing an understanding
- 37:50Speaker 6: like I'm not going to be coaching anybody this year,
- 37:52Speaker 6: Like I'm not going to be telling anybody what to
- 37:54Speaker 6: do like this.
- 37:55Speaker 3: That's how I took him. Yeah, well, you just think
- 37:56Speaker 3: as a quarterback, you take normal for granted sometimes that
- 37:59Speaker 3: you're offensive coordinator knows what he wants to do, has
- 38:02Speaker 3: a vision for the offense. He can tell every player
- 38:04Speaker 3: what they're supposed to do, want to play, Versus you
- 38:06Speaker 3: come into a year where you're like, I don't think
- 38:08Speaker 3: our coaches have a vision for what they want us
- 38:11Speaker 3: to do. So I think from that perspective, it puts
- 38:14Speaker 3: a little bit more into perspective for me.
- 38:17Speaker 6: He also mentioned that Bill O'Brien commands the room and
- 38:20Speaker 6: like the way he runs the room is impressive.
- 38:22Speaker 3: There's nobody who's going to like screw up route space.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Ye bill O'Brien's watch.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, speaking of that, I thought Kendrick Bourne
- 38:30Speaker 4: was was much more active yesterday too.
- 38:33Speaker 6: Did drop a ball up the scene?
- 38:34Speaker 2: Yeah he did, Yeah he did with no contact. Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 3: You just I just wonder, you know, what's going to
- 38:40Speaker 3: carry over footsteps.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Let's go to Todd, North Carolina. What's up Todd?
- 38:46Speaker 14: Hey, guys, I know it's a silly season, and you
- 38:48Speaker 14: know everybody's predicting every different thing, and everybody's kind of, you.
- 38:52Speaker 15: Know, got something strained. So I just want to hear
- 38:54Speaker 15: who deuces most current man crushes on the field.
- 38:59Speaker 12: He has one every year.
- 39:00Speaker 15: I think for Evan it's my poo. I'm not sure
- 39:04Speaker 15: who you know, Fred.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Would have, and I do have him crush on the Patriots.
- 39:10Speaker 2: I had to think about that.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't pick one in O t A s
- 39:14Speaker 3: because I because I have a defense guy and he
- 39:16Speaker 3: pads to come on before I can, you know, of course,
- 39:19Speaker 3: not the cost. I just that was when I just
- 39:20Speaker 3: felt in my heart, you know, I knew.
- 39:22Speaker 6: That's not that's not a great example.
- 39:25Speaker 2: That was my my first year here here, my first
- 39:28Speaker 2: year year. That was who I got painted to.
- 39:30Speaker 3: But I think probably at this point on White, but
- 39:31Speaker 3: I'm definitely.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I think I think yes, he filled out. I was
- 39:35Speaker 2: going to say, you know, key On White could be
- 39:38Speaker 2: the guy he's got to earn my crush, but.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Sure he's going home to work.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Right right now. I would say Christian bar More. I
- 39:46Speaker 2: thought about him too.
- 39:47Speaker 3: I mean, he wasn't there, but I just a guy
- 39:49Speaker 3: that could really provide a boost that I don't think
- 39:52Speaker 3: people are really.
- 39:53Speaker 4: So now we're talking about players like ability. Yeah, I
- 39:56Speaker 4: think he's talking about like Derek.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Stupid, like a stupid player. Who am I attracted to? Actually?
- 40:02Speaker 3: I can I amend Mike?
- 40:04Speaker 2: Can I amend this? Can I put it?
- 40:05Speaker 3: Ma a b Bearinger with the glasses I'm all, I
- 40:08Speaker 3: think this is hil bothered. We got one, we got
- 40:11Speaker 3: a punner with glasses on.
- 40:12Speaker 2: I'm ready to go.
- 40:12Speaker 7: I love it.
- 40:14Speaker 2: You know, Brandon Spike's not here anymore.
- 40:16Speaker 6: So I like athletic people. I like people that move well.
- 40:20Speaker 6: Me too, and that's why Mapu and Taekwon gave me
- 40:24Speaker 6: a little little Taekwon yesterday.
- 40:26Speaker 4: The dynamic element is what I I'm attracted to too.
- 40:31Speaker 4: But yeah, you know, I thought the two second year
- 40:34Speaker 4: running backs, both of them Harris and Pierre Strong too.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Pierre Strong caught a number of passes yesterday in different formations,
- 40:42Speaker 4: some screens.
- 40:43Speaker 3: A lot of screens, say woman, would you think of
- 40:45Speaker 3: an overall yesterday? It's just what the offense was working
- 40:47Speaker 3: on because it seemed like a lot of misdirection, a
- 40:49Speaker 3: lot of like you know, wide receiver screens, you know,
- 40:52Speaker 3: just not like conventional kind of stuff just seemed like
- 40:55Speaker 3: more so special in.
- 40:58Speaker 6: The interest of not giving too much away, So Bill
- 41:00Speaker 6: O'Brien doesn't get mad at me. I think the biggest
- 41:02Speaker 6: thing that you saw was the screen periods that they
- 41:07Speaker 6: were working on. We're clearly working on building those foundational
- 41:10Speaker 6: elements because they're going to have compliments off of those plays.
- 41:14Speaker 6: So my guess is that some of the screens that
- 41:16Speaker 6: we saw yesterday are going to be attachments to RPOs
- 41:19Speaker 6: and then they're probably going to then once you get
- 41:22Speaker 6: the pads on and you add the offensive line to it,
- 41:24Speaker 6: and you add the run game to it, now that's
- 41:26Speaker 6: where it all starts to build out from there. The
- 41:30Speaker 6: other thing that I think really stood out was the
- 41:32Speaker 6: amount of motion that they were using, not shifting, but
- 41:35Speaker 6: motion at the snap more than enough times where they
- 41:39Speaker 6: were motioning guys using that orbit motion when the player
- 41:42Speaker 6: goes behind the quarterback and then coming out through the
- 41:44Speaker 6: other side of the formation, which obviously creates stress on
- 41:48Speaker 6: the defense. You know, you go from this is the
- 41:50Speaker 6: two receiver sides, now it's a three receiver side and
- 41:52Speaker 6: how are we going to cover that and react to that.
- 41:54Speaker 6: There was some play action, some under center play action
- 41:57Speaker 6: going on, but it was screen. It was quick game,
- 42:00Speaker 6: it was under center play action. And that's what we
- 42:03Speaker 6: all want to see, I think from this offense. I
- 42:04Speaker 6: think we want to see those three things. Get the
- 42:06Speaker 6: ball out, take your calculated shots down the field. But
- 42:10Speaker 6: I think one of the biggest differences between this practice
- 42:13Speaker 6: and practices that we saw last year. There wasn't a
- 42:15Speaker 6: whole lot of holding the football, like the quarterback wasn't
- 42:18Speaker 6: patting the baby in the pocket, staring like looking around
- 42:21Speaker 6: like this. And then you know how many times did
- 42:23Speaker 6: mac Jones throw the ball away in practice?
- 42:26Speaker 3: And that's a really good point too.
- 42:27Speaker 6: In practice, you're throwing the ball away.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Earlier in the show, I had mentioned that I thought
- 42:32Speaker 4: the offense looked looked, you know, pretty good last spring too.
- 42:36Speaker 4: But that's one area that was different is I think
- 42:39Speaker 4: a lot of those deep balls to Trade Nixon that
- 42:41Speaker 4: we talked about were plays that we all kind of
- 42:44Speaker 4: looked at. I'm not sure they would have been There
- 42:46Speaker 4: wasn't really any of that yesterday. Now, there wasn't anything
- 42:48Speaker 4: really down the field. They had one deep seam route
- 42:52Speaker 4: to Thornton. I think that it took a little time
- 42:55Speaker 4: to develop, but I agree with Evan. I didn't think
- 42:58Speaker 4: the quarterbacks were holding the ball, padding it a lot,
- 43:01Speaker 4: and you know, having a hard time finding someone. They
- 43:04Speaker 4: did occasionally, but not like last year. I think that
- 43:07Speaker 4: might have been a difference between the actual execution of
- 43:11Speaker 4: the plays from this year to last year.
- 43:13Speaker 6: Yeah, they had one play in particular, the one that
- 43:15Speaker 6: you were talking about earlier, where Bill O'Brien was applauding
- 43:18Speaker 6: what was happening and they motioned Taekwon over to that
- 43:21Speaker 6: side of the field, And what I think he was
- 43:24Speaker 6: applauding was that the routes got up the field and
- 43:28Speaker 6: they were covered, but they they brought the gravity right.
- 43:31Speaker 6: They brought those guys up the field, and instead of
- 43:34Speaker 6: sitting there and waiting and waiting and waiting to see
- 43:36Speaker 6: if the routes down the field we're going to develop,
- 43:38Speaker 6: Mac just dumped it off into the flat to Taekwon,
- 43:41Speaker 6: who had space with just one guy over there that
- 43:43Speaker 6: he could make somebody miss and turn up the field.
- 43:45Speaker 6: And that the timing of the play and the spacing
- 43:48Speaker 6: of the routes were what I think Bill O'Brien was applauding.
- 43:52Speaker 6: You know, that's what we're looking for.
- 43:53Speaker 3: That's what we want to do.
- 43:54Speaker 6: Even if the downfield shot isn't there, We're not going
- 43:57Speaker 6: to hold the ball for four seconds waiting for it
- 43:59Speaker 6: to happened. We're just gonna kind of survive the play.
- 44:02Speaker 3: And we did stop.
- 44:05Speaker 4: We did see a lot of you know, the two
- 44:06Speaker 4: tight end stuff too. Again, not wanting to get into
- 44:09Speaker 4: what they were actually doing with that, but maybe more
- 44:13Speaker 4: than we saw last year with with Henry and in Smith.
- 44:16Speaker 4: I think there was maybe a little bit more Henry
- 44:18Speaker 4: Kasiki than we saw last year. We'll see if that continues.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Christian rites in from North Carolina. Evan is still suffering
- 44:27Speaker 2: from recency bias. Let's not overreact to the Taekwon looking
- 44:30Speaker 2: good as we can remember train Nixon look like Randy Moss,
- 44:36Speaker 2: hoping he does improve this year. But let's relax on
- 44:38Speaker 2: the hype of Thornton. I'm seeing through Twitter. Can you
- 44:42Speaker 2: just enjoy it?
- 44:42Speaker 3: Like there's nothing wrong with at this point.
- 44:45Speaker 4: But this is why I offered the disclaimer, because I'm
- 44:49Speaker 4: waiting for this. Yeah, because last year when we went
- 44:53Speaker 4: to practice, we told you what we.
- 44:55Speaker 6: Saw just like we did that Tykwon Thornton was catching
- 44:58Speaker 6: passes all over the place yesterday.
- 45:00Speaker 3: What else am I supposed to say the show? We're like, well,
- 45:02Speaker 3: Tay Kwong was really good yesterday, But I don't know.
- 45:06Speaker 6: When I wrote about it yesterday.
- 45:07Speaker 4: I used.
- 45:11Speaker 6: Murray's Harris was my big one in twenty nineteen, my
- 45:14Speaker 6: first year covering the team all year, you know, first
- 45:18Speaker 6: the OTA, first Mini camp, all that stuff. I fell
- 45:22Speaker 6: in love with Murray's Harris. I was like, you know,
- 45:23Speaker 6: this guy's going to be a player for this team.
- 45:25Speaker 6: Brady's like dapping him up after play.
- 45:27Speaker 3: I thought it was definitely going to make the team.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Ye'll tell you that.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Yeah, And then like in August, he gets cut, like
- 45:32Speaker 6: not even first, he didn't even get close.
- 45:35Speaker 2: So I get it.
- 45:36Speaker 6: But with Taekwon, like that's the fiftieth overall pick in
- 45:39Speaker 6: the draft, Like, that's not Maurice Harris. That's not some
- 45:42Speaker 6: like cast off that you're trying to make something out of.
- 45:45Speaker 6: This is a guy that you are drafting high in
- 45:48Speaker 6: the draft, with real talent, like, with real tools at
- 45:52Speaker 6: his disposal. And it wasn't so much like the results
- 45:55Speaker 6: of the plays. It was how they were getting him open,
- 45:58Speaker 6: like how they were using him in a different ways,
- 46:00Speaker 6: that they were incorporating his speed into the offense. It's
- 46:03Speaker 6: not like, Okay, yeah, he caught a deep post in
- 46:05Speaker 6: seven on seven. I'm not like gushing about that. I'm
- 46:09Speaker 6: just saying that the fact that they are getting him
- 46:11Speaker 6: as open as he was on like, I never saw
- 46:14Speaker 6: that last year. I never saw a guy five yards
- 46:17Speaker 6: behind the defense and nobody within ten yards of him,
- 46:20Speaker 6: Like that was not happening as often last year. And
- 46:23Speaker 6: in one practice we saw him get open, probably more
- 46:26Speaker 6: than we saw all down the stretch last year.
- 46:28Speaker 4: And so Evan and Micha will make fun of me
- 46:30Speaker 4: because I got excited about one play. They just maant,
- 46:33Speaker 4: like the most routine twelve yard out that you've seen
- 46:36Speaker 4: every football practice you've ever attended at any level. They
- 46:40Speaker 4: run that play, and I just think that's perfect for him,
- 46:43Speaker 4: Like he has to make the cornerback backpedal with his speed. Yeah,
- 46:48Speaker 4: So instead of trying to like see if we can
- 46:51Speaker 4: outrun five guys going across the field potentially getting lit up,
- 46:57Speaker 4: why not just get a guy on the outside and
- 46:59Speaker 4: take the easy first down throws, you know, the drive
- 47:02Speaker 4: starters that that they used to have back in the
- 47:04Speaker 4: day with Brandon Lafel and the guys, you know, Brandon Lloyd.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Even even though I couldn't stand Brandon Lloyd, he had
- 47:11Speaker 4: a pretty productive season that year. I liked the idea
- 47:15Speaker 4: of incorporating that, you know, if he can catch twenty
- 47:18Speaker 4: of those, you know, and then eventually you beat him
- 47:22Speaker 4: with double moves and stuff like that, off of that,
- 47:24Speaker 4: you don't have to send him across the middle all
- 47:27Speaker 4: the time.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Yeah, that was I think what was the whole thing
- 47:29Speaker 6: about the offense was you could see how these foundational
- 47:33Speaker 6: plays that they're installing in the spring, the things that
- 47:36Speaker 6: they could then evolve off of that in six months,
- 47:40Speaker 6: you know when it really gets real. And that's I
- 47:42Speaker 6: think something that I that we never saw last year,
- 47:45Speaker 6: Like there was no sequencing, sequencing, rhyme or reason, no structure,
- 47:50Speaker 6: and now you can see sort of the bones of
- 47:52Speaker 6: all right, this is what they're gonna fall back on,
- 47:55Speaker 6: and then we're gonna build off of that.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Ray and Saint Louis says, let's have for react. Yeah,
- 48:01Speaker 2: I'm excited to see all the different reports coming from OTAs.
- 48:04Speaker 2: I really liked how Mac talked yesterday. He sounds more
- 48:07Speaker 2: like a leader, Like he has more swagger and I'm
- 48:09Speaker 2: excited to see the guy's rally around him. How did
- 48:12Speaker 2: Kendrick Bourne look?
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yeah, he was active, Yeah, active. I mean I think
- 48:17Speaker 3: with Mac too. It's just I mean, I was expecting
- 48:20Speaker 3: that this would happen because he's just a kid. I mean,
- 48:22Speaker 3: he's gonna mature and obviously the experience he had last
- 48:24Speaker 3: year is something that can mature you pretty quick. But
- 48:27Speaker 3: he just it didn't feel like he was constantly running
- 48:29Speaker 3: everything through the Is it okay to say this?
- 48:32Speaker 2: Can I say?
- 48:32Speaker 3: You know, like he just was conversational. He made fun
- 48:35Speaker 3: of Tommy Kern's hat a little bit, like, you know,
- 48:37Speaker 3: just you didn't really get that stuff last year. He
- 48:39Speaker 3: was just more so in it, so, you know, concerned
- 48:42Speaker 3: with making sure he didn't say the wrong thing or
- 48:45Speaker 3: you know, so he wasn't at all.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Just to see him get away.
- 48:48Speaker 3: From that and kind of just be calm and you know,
- 48:51Speaker 3: responding to questions and having a little repartee with the reporters.
- 48:55Speaker 3: You know, I don't know what's gonna mean. I still don't.
- 48:57Speaker 3: I still have, you know, questions about the performance in
- 49:00Speaker 3: runch time with him, and you know, but I have
- 49:02Speaker 3: some positive juice going right now, and that's you know,
- 49:04Speaker 3: all you can ask at this point. I mean, I
- 49:06Speaker 3: you don't feel somewhat positive about your team at this point,
- 49:08Speaker 3: I think you're gonna be miserable.
- 49:09Speaker 2: All.
- 49:10Speaker 4: You have to have some sort of enthusiasm at least
- 49:12Speaker 4: for the newness of it.
- 49:13Speaker 3: All, especially with like these young kids who I mean,
- 49:16Speaker 3: like you know Thornton. I know he's the second year guy,
- 49:18Speaker 3: but there's still a lot of potential there. I mean,
- 49:20Speaker 3: he's you know, a kid who can play, and you know,
- 49:22Speaker 3: to see that player. I mean, if there's one player
- 49:24Speaker 3: you said, who's one guy that you think if you
- 49:25Speaker 3: really popped in an OTA practice you'd pick it to be,
- 49:28Speaker 3: it probably be him.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Just that's what they need.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Everybody's clamoring still for you know, DeAndre Hopkins, and you know,
- 49:33Speaker 3: all of a sudden, Hey, maybe if you've got a
- 49:34Speaker 3: guy here that you found last year in the draft
- 49:36Speaker 3: that I mean, that's that's way better than going out
- 49:39Speaker 3: and getting old.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Assunder And it's one thing you can see when they're
- 49:42Speaker 2: in short to speed. You know, when a guy's fast,
- 49:44Speaker 2: he stands out I go back to that Bethel Johnson
- 49:48Speaker 2: when he first got here and returning kicks and you know,
- 49:51Speaker 2: zero to sixty, like he was just different than everybody else.
- 49:54Speaker 6: Yeah, the clip that we posted on Twitter of the
- 49:58Speaker 6: bomb to Thornton is getting some negative feedback, to say
- 50:01Speaker 6: the least, because it looks like there was nobody covering
- 50:04Speaker 6: him and so it looks like it's against air, so
- 50:07Speaker 6: that we're hyping up a play against air. It was
- 50:09Speaker 6: in seven on seven and he ran by everybody, right,
- 50:12Speaker 6: and in these types of practices, if he wasn't doing
- 50:15Speaker 6: those types of things, that would be a major concern
- 50:18Speaker 6: because he is a four two eight guy that should
- 50:20Speaker 6: be doing those types of things when there is no
- 50:22Speaker 6: pads and there's no real contact. So if he what
- 50:25Speaker 6: do you want us to say, Like, if he was
- 50:27Speaker 6: getting covered and everybody was all on top of him
- 50:30Speaker 6: all the time, all practice long, that would have been
- 50:32Speaker 6: a bad sign. The fact that he was actually getting
- 50:34Speaker 6: open means that we're at least on that baseline, like
- 50:37Speaker 6: we were at least past that eye test.
- 50:39Speaker 3: Well, you saw him dust Jack Jones once off the line.
- 50:42Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, the lateral movement off the line looked good yesterday.
- 50:45Speaker 6: You know, just his press releases and his ability to
- 50:47Speaker 6: get off the line of scrimmage. When I thought the
- 50:49Speaker 6: route that Paul was talking about, it was, you know,
- 50:53Speaker 6: that had some dressing on it and some seizing and
- 50:56Speaker 6: on it. You know, it wasn't just like, oh, I'm
- 50:59Speaker 6: just going to get to the top around and like
- 51:00Speaker 6: lazily come through this break and running out. It was
- 51:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna set up the out in the stem and
- 51:05Speaker 6: then I'm gonna snap it off and I'm gonna create separations,
- 51:07Speaker 6: spun the corner around. So those are the types of
- 51:10Speaker 6: things that you just want to see this time of year.
- 51:12Speaker 6: Let's see what it looks like when the pads come on,
- 51:14Speaker 6: no doubt about it. But it's encouraging.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Rusty's in arlin, He says. I genuinely am glad we're
- 51:20Speaker 2: back to the overly positive coverage of OTAs Like before,
- 51:24Speaker 2: I think the wide receiver position will be the most
- 51:26Speaker 2: interesting watch unfold, and especially with Cunningham effectively being a
- 51:30Speaker 2: wide receiver from what I've read when Edelman was here initially,
- 51:34Speaker 2: what was he doing in camp? Is there a chance
- 51:37Speaker 2: one of these rookies or Thornton shows enough to push
- 51:40Speaker 2: Parker or Borne off the roster. Just seems like a
- 51:42Speaker 2: bit of a log jam if Cunningham or Booty shows enough.
- 51:46Speaker 4: So Evan just said they don't have enough receivers in camp,
- 51:50Speaker 4: and now we have a long cham.
- 51:52Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 51:52Speaker 3: I don't think either of those guys can.
- 51:54Speaker 4: And Edelman was a wide receiver in his first camp.
- 51:58Speaker 4: Now he mostly handled punts. He was returning a lot
- 52:01Speaker 4: of punts early on in his career, but he was
- 52:03Speaker 4: a receiver immediately.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Yeah, go watch his football life. He talks a lot
- 52:07Speaker 3: about that those initial days in camp. What builds like
- 52:09Speaker 3: first things saying to him, it's good stuff.
- 52:11Speaker 6: We just we get a lot of that about like
- 52:14Speaker 6: getting rid of Devonte Parker or Kendrick Bourne, Like that's
- 52:17Speaker 6: like the big question is, oh, like if this rookie
- 52:20Speaker 6: receiver pops, like, is that going to push these guys
- 52:22Speaker 6: off the roster? And I just I don't think the
- 52:24Speaker 6: Patriots are in the position to be casting off playable
- 52:28Speaker 6: receivers like Devonte Parker might not be specially might not
- 52:31Speaker 6: be a true number one, but he can play in
- 52:34Speaker 6: the league, like in Kendrick Bourne the same thing. So
- 52:37Speaker 6: are the Patriots really in the position to just say like, actually,
- 52:40Speaker 6: we're too good now for you. Kendrick Bourne like no,
- 52:43Speaker 6: like they don't have that kind of receipt.
- 52:44Speaker 3: I was the thing kind of reviewing some of the
- 52:45Speaker 3: games again, was that the Parker was really probably the
- 52:48Speaker 3: only guy last year that made I mean, and I
- 52:50Speaker 3: know he was hurt, and you know he's in and out,
- 52:51Speaker 3: but but he throughout the year made some big plays.
- 52:54Speaker 3: You know, there weren't a lot of them, but I
- 52:56Speaker 3: think a large majority were made by him.
- 52:58Speaker 2: I think they hang on to him. Chris in Denmark
- 53:01Speaker 2: wants to know why does it always sound like there's
- 53:03Speaker 2: a truck backing up in the background, because there is
- 53:05Speaker 2: a lot of times there's a lot of construction going
- 53:09Speaker 2: on around here. Concerts, setups not surprising. Let's see somebody
- 53:14Speaker 2: had an Ota comment where it was, oh here it is.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Rick writes in from Dallas. I love that they're using
- 53:22Speaker 2: Mapu at linebacker at least for now, and hope he
- 53:25Speaker 2: stays there too. I'm kind of disappointed cunning him spend
- 53:28Speaker 2: most of his time catching passes like Evan. I was
- 53:31Speaker 2: hoping they'd use him as a developmental third string quarterback.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Well he did get it some development three. I love
- 53:37Speaker 2: that Mac, at least on the first day, was the
- 53:39Speaker 2: clearcut quarterback. Remember it's the first day for us. Yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 2: they've had they've been out there A question why keep
- 53:46Speaker 2: Joe Judge? I know Bill thinks he brings a lot
- 53:48Speaker 2: to the table, and I'm sure his knowledge would be beneficial.
- 53:50Speaker 2: But if the players have such a negative opinion of him,
- 53:53Speaker 2: doesn't that negate his contribution. A leader can't lead if
- 53:56Speaker 2: no one follows. Doesn't Bill risk losing the locker room
- 54:00Speaker 2: completely by keeping him on the staff? I hate calling
- 54:02Speaker 2: for a person's job, but the Patriots motto has always
- 54:05Speaker 2: been the team comes first. This point, is Bill really
- 54:08Speaker 2: putting the team first by keeping him? Well?
- 54:11Speaker 3: I think Bill believes that he's a really good coach.
- 54:13Speaker 3: I mean, I think you'd have to ask the players.
- 54:15Speaker 3: You'd have to truly get a sense of is their
- 54:18Speaker 3: lingering resentment towards him? And is his presence even on
- 54:22Speaker 3: special teams this season, is still going to affect people
- 54:25Speaker 3: like Mac Jones and Kendrick Bourne and those kind of guys.
- 54:28Speaker 3: But I think Bill has too much respect for Joe
- 54:31Speaker 3: Judge and is going to keep him in the fold
- 54:33Speaker 3: because he thinks he thinks he helps.
- 54:36Speaker 2: All right, Paul's food is here, so we'll take a break,
- 54:39Speaker 2: and when we get back, more calls and emails here

- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots On and now Great
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Moments in.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: History.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: I wasn't I wasn't born for for eighty five obviously,
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: but you know, my dad, my uncle's, you know, grandfathers,
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: they would tell me about stories about that Super Bowl,
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: and they were just happy to beat in that Super Bowl,
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: and they knew they were going to get their doors
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: blown off by the eighty five Bears. Like there was
- 1:05:26Speaker 6: there was no conversation of whether or not they were
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: going to win that game. But the Packers Super Bowl,
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: they they probably should have won the game just the
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: way that the game unfolded. And to me, Parcels is
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: much to blame I mean Reggie White, like, can we
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: we don't put a tight end over there, chip them
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: like do something.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: This is all retroactive because how old were you in
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: ninety six four?
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: He's so mad, like you're kicking off the dem.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Little baby Evan getting mad, whipping his blanket.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: That's another great moment from.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: All right back here on Patriots on Filter at eight
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: five five pass five hundred is the ace take a
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: hotline web radio at Patriots dot com. It's the email address,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: it's Deuce, it's Evan, it's Paul, it's myself, Matt and
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: the booth. We're here until two o'clock and then it's
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: catch twenty two. Evan and Alex will react even more.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: How did Barth take out yesterday's thing?
- 1:06:22Speaker 11: You know?
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: Pretty good? I think you know he's sometimes is a
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: little bit more tepid around this time of year, doesn't
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: get quite as excited as I do, believe it or not.
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: But yeah, yesterday, I you know, they're on Reddit, the
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: Patriots reddit. There's just like tweets like from practice and
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: stuff that it goes goes crazy and there's like a
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: couple of things I was showing Barth of like well
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: even works for Patriots dot Com. Now, so like, can
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: we really take his analysis seriously? Like, you know, he's
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: on the payroll and I all that kind of stuff.
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: So maybe maybe maybe that influences me. Maybe it doesn't.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Who knows, Andrew and l He still hasn't gotten his
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: T shirt Matt. Yeah, so Matt, Matty can take a
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: part a part of rocket Launcher and put it back together,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: but he can't put a T shirt in the mail.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: For sure. He got his sent out to him. Oh
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: oh okay, all right, well he says he still hasn't
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: gotten it. So I have a question.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, So on catch twenty two, do we have
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: catch fourteen today?
- 1:07:21Speaker 13: Oh?
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Oh, I.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: Was smart numbers. I'm going to use that now.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: I'm wicked smart.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Yeah, use that now?
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: We are we are going to do like twenty minutes
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: on the rookie Specialists.
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: I'm sure I am going to go back and have
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: my friend rise now.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Paul's food bearing.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: I'm sure the YouTube crowd is all over it.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Oh they are. Ryan in Situate writes in There's been
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: a lot of talk about the linebackers, in particular some
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: of the faster guys such as Wilson Mapu and McMillan.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: My question is, with McMillan going to season ending IR,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: does that open up a spot for mac Wilson. People
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: speculated that if Maphu got some run at linebacker, maybe
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: that pushes Wilson off the roster. Curious of your thoughts. Possibly,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: I mean he was out there with with McMillan out again, yeah,
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: where he blew his achilles. I think last weeks he's
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: done for the year, So yeah, that's done.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: I think mac Wilson still kind of has an inside
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: track just for depth and special teams. But you know,
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: maybe somebody like Chris Bard beats him out, but he
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: was mac Wilson was playing a little bit on defense yesterday,
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: so I don't think you can totally, you know, write
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: him off. I think they already have plans for Maphu
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: anyway that probably were unrelated. But Devai's in that mix too.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Cameron writes in He's from Franklin said, what what what
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: was up with Bill Belichick yesterday? Nothing? Nothing new? H
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: And also what are some positive differences from this year's
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: first o TA compared to last year's where we talked
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: about it. I mean, it just looked a lot smoother everybody,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: as Max said, was on the same page. They were
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: ready to go. It looked like a NFL off from
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: the get go. Not that at this time last year
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: it didn't, you know, because we had really no idea.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: But you saw Bill O'Brien. There wasn't any questions about, well,
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: who's got the radio? You know it was Bill O'Brien.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: He's calling the offense. It's gonna be his offense. There's
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: no doubt about it. Everybody's on the same page that way.
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: That was refreshing, not like having to go into the
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: practice and be like, who's calm plays? He was doing this,
- 1:09:24Speaker 6: He was doing that, and like finding all the coaches,
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: like you just knew where everybody was supposed to be
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: and that's where they were.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: So there was a no huddle, back up and run
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: it again.
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: Yeah, no, David Andrews in the middle of the offensive
- 1:09:37Speaker 6: huddle screaming at people.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: Kobe writes in you guys all know way more about
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: football than I ever will. But last show, when you
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: were talking defensive strategy and personnel, I couldn't help but
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: wonder what Belichick would think if he listened to an episode.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: I kind of know what he would say, would he
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: think you are morons who have no idea about what
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: you're talking about, or would you say, wow, these guys
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: make a lot of sense in the things they say
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: are accurate.
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: Probably the first one.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Yeah. But it's also I mean, like it's just football.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: It's not like this is like it is just organic
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: chemistry that you know, you're like there's routes that you
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: run and timing well.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Even Bill tells a story that you know, like people
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: call them this defensive genius and his father wants a genius.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: All you do is walk up and down the sideline.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: I mean that's his father that said that.
- 1:10:27Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean I think I mean that's you know,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: obviously a passion for Evan and it certainly not as
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: much for me, but but but a passion then something
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: that was in you know, a motivator for me to
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: get involved because I just wanted to know more about
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: the game. But I think you can know more about
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: the game without being able to like break down a
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: playbook and tell you everything there is to know.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: But you know, you start to pick up what.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Different coverages are, and you know, like you know field
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: and boundary and you know the strategy that goes behind
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: those kind of things, and you know, I just I
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: think it's fun. You learn every year. I mean that
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: was you know, I think what was fun last year
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: about having Evan come aboard is you know, you look
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: at things a little bit differently, maybe you learn some things,
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: and you know, it's just just a.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: One of the great things about football, but also the
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: toughest to evaluate individual players is none of us know
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: really what the assignment is on every play. You know,
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: from the look of it, you can kind of guess,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: but you don't know, like if it tackles all of
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: a sudden blocking no One, that might not necessarily have
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: been his fault, you know.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: Kind of just been a mess up on the protection call,
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: but it looks that wrong way.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: It looks that way, you know. But we don't always
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: know what the blocking assignments were, what a receiver was
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: really supposed to do, want to give and play? Why
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: two receivers ended up in the same place, Well, whose
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: fault is that? We don't We don't know. We can guess,
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: but yeah, you know, we don't really know.
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: I try my best not to place like blame on
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: players as much as I can because of that exactly
- 1:11:52Speaker 6: like I you don't know. Now I could tell you,
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: like what the defensive structure looks like it should have been,
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: or what the route looks like it should have been,
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: and or if it was successful like that, which is
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: much more fun. I can tell you why it was successful.
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: But I'm not gonna say, oh, you know, Miles Bryant
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: blew his zone here, or you know Jack Jones blew
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: it here. And let's say if it's Manton Many, he
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: gets beat, he gets beat right, right. But in terms
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: of the nuances, yeah, that's but that's what makes football
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: so cool.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Well, that's and that's why there can be what fifty
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: people out there covering practice yesterday, and everybody's you know,
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: I mean a lot of the things, a lot of overlap.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: I'm sure people are reading other things.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: But you know, and there's ninety guys out there, and
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: sometimes you're watching something different and someone will say, well
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: I thought so and so look good doing this, and
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: you're like, wow, really, I really didn't even notice that
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: guy because you didn't. You didn't you weren't watching something
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: that he did.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Yep, eight five five past five hundred disease take an outline.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Let's go to Dan and Florida. What's up, Dan? Hey?
- 1:12:53Speaker 21: Can you guys hear me?
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: Yes, we can.
- 1:12:56Speaker 21: Hey.
- 1:12:56Speaker 22: How's it going?
- 1:12:57Speaker 10: How you doing to good?
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Hey?
- 1:13:00Speaker 22: So I got three things for you guys.
- 1:13:02Speaker 21: I want you guys, get you guys.
- 1:13:03Speaker 10: To stop on these three things. First thing is, did
- 1:13:07Speaker 10: you guys hear about Remondre Stevenson being named to the
- 1:13:11Speaker 10: All All I think it was the they called it.
- 1:13:16Speaker 10: He was named to they All Breakout team for twenty
- 1:13:18Speaker 10: twenty three?
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Who's Who's whose list is this? Uh?
- 1:13:22Speaker 10: This is on Patriots Country?
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Patriots Country? Okay, okay, they're really going on on the list.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: I mean that's a very I love me some.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: Romondre Stevenson, the guy did rush for a thousand yards
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: last year and caught for like another five hundred, like
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: four and change. Anyway, like they got him.
- 1:13:40Speaker 22: They got him listed for one thousand and forty yards
- 1:13:43Speaker 22: and five touchdowns on the ground.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: Season.
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: In other words, what he did last year he only
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: has five touchdowns in this offense is in trouble?
- 1:13:52Speaker 22: Yeah, I think he I like Vermondre. And then the
- 1:13:55Speaker 22: other two things, what do you what do you guys
- 1:13:57Speaker 22: think about the new title? And Anthony I don't pronounce
- 1:14:01Speaker 22: his last name, for sure, for sure, for sure. What
- 1:14:06Speaker 22: do you what do you guys think about him kind
- 1:14:08Speaker 22: of using him like how Josh mcdagiels did with the
- 1:14:11Speaker 22: with the fullback.
- 1:14:12Speaker 21: But I don't want him to be a traditional fullback.
- 1:14:15Speaker 22: I want him to be like I don't know if
- 1:14:17Speaker 22: you guys, Yeah, like Kyle used Check with the forty
- 1:14:21Speaker 22: nine ers, how they use him in the passing game, kind.
- 1:14:24Speaker 21: Of go out there on some screen, maybe some bubble
- 1:14:26Speaker 21: blaze block a little bit. But also because I don't
- 1:14:29Speaker 21: want it to be predictable where every time we have
- 1:14:31Speaker 21: a fullback out of every team in NF I was like, Okay,
- 1:14:34Speaker 21: they're gonna go run, So I wanted to kind of
- 1:14:36Speaker 21: like mix it up. They throw him out on some
- 1:14:38Speaker 21: bubble screens and they get him out there going outside
- 1:14:41Speaker 21: kind of basically being like a Kyle us Check.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: I don't think he's as good as Kyle Check.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: I don't think they're gonna I think he's a depth
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: I think he's a death guy. I think if he's playing,
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: it's it's probably a bad sign. Thanks Danicky and Thornton
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: and those guys and Douglas. But he does have a
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: little bit of a full back background. So III gets
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: hurt or gets hurt in camp and you need an
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: extra body.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: He might He's probably the next guy up over Matt
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Sokal or Scotty Washington or.
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: They did use that at Alabama. They did use last year,
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: like a full back slash h back player. Bars would
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: know the guy's name, he's uh, yeah, you know, I
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: can ask him later, but yeah, he he uh. They
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: did use that player. And I think one of the
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: things that they were maybe doing yesterday maybe they weren't,
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: but they.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Is this clinical uh.
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: They they were motioning players into the blocking structure on screens, right,
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: so it was adding on blockers onto the screen. And
- 1:15:44Speaker 6: maybe maybe that is something that that first her first
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: could do better than then Hunter Henry and Kisiki. Maybe
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: That one Vancouver with Paul, Hey, Fred, how you doing today?
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Good bit?
- 1:16:04Speaker 15: Okay, I want to I want to ask you a
- 1:16:06Speaker 15: couple questions. I want to get to my question today.
- 1:16:08Speaker 15: But you know, with the retire with the retirement of
- 1:16:12Speaker 15: Devin mccordy, it's an interesting fact about the Patriots roster
- 1:16:17Speaker 15: now that we have zero first round, second round, a
- 1:16:22Speaker 15: third round pick signed to a second contract on that
- 1:16:27Speaker 15: roster right now, like our own pick, not a single one.
- 1:16:32Speaker 15: And I find that really quite interesting in a roster
- 1:16:36Speaker 15: building thing. And I actually managed to find a study
- 1:16:40Speaker 15: on the internet about this kind of thing. Who resigned
- 1:16:44Speaker 15: second contract? What are those percentages? I found out that
- 1:16:48Speaker 15: for first round draft picks, thirty one percent sign with
- 1:16:52Speaker 15: their own team and fifty percent sign with a different team.
- 1:16:55Speaker 15: The second round is twenty four percent, forty three for
- 1:16:59Speaker 15: a different one, and round three sixteen. So when I'm
- 1:17:03Speaker 15: kind of thinking about, you know, I always just wanted
- 1:17:05Speaker 15: the Patriots to build a new core of players. So
- 1:17:10Speaker 15: here's my question, what current players do you want to resign?
- 1:17:15Speaker 15: And what do you think is a likelihood Bill will
- 1:17:18Speaker 15: do it? Because I look at a player like gosh
- 1:17:21Speaker 15: oo J. I don't agree with Evan that these that
- 1:17:25Speaker 15: quote elite pass rushers. I believe he's good, and I
- 1:17:29Speaker 15: do agree with Evan that you need somebody a specialist
- 1:17:32Speaker 15: like that with that kind of skill in today's game.
- 1:17:35Speaker 15: But I have no hope that Bill is going to
- 1:17:37Speaker 15: match what the market's going to pay for those guys.
- 1:17:40Speaker 15: So yeah, that's good, And is there any reason you
- 1:17:44Speaker 15: think they really should have kept those are my questions.
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: Okay, football, I would say Kyle Duggar will be my
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: pick for his answer. Yeah, I think it's probably between
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Dugger and new j But yeah, for the reasons that
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: I do agree, and I think that's kind of what it's.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: I hope bak on, you know, I hope Barbour gives
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: them a reason.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree undred percent on that, and I mean
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: i'd put him almost near the top. I mean, I
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: think he's got the potential to be like that true disruptive.
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: And the reason it's zero right now is very easy
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: to go back and just look, they've missed on draft picks, right,
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: It's not like a lot of the guys that they
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: didn't sign the second contracts are dominating around the league, right,
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: you know. They they missed on you know, Nikhil Harry.
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: You know, I mean, Isaiah Win just signed for peanuts
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: to compete in Miami, and he was available for a
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: long time.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Like Sony Michelle's been like kicking around team.
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: Even him and Nikkil Harry are both not on a
- 1:18:41Speaker 6: deep So.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: Those whatever eighteen nineteen drafts, like those are the guys
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: that should be on second contracts now. And we'll see
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: the twenty twenty draft. When you dugger och are all candidates,
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: we'll see it's get retained.
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: I mean that call is just the heart of the
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: matter of why they are where they are right now.
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: They don't have they didn't draft those players.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: And again the difference here is it's not a matter
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: of the Patriots simply not resigning guys. And like Paul said,
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: then they go on and it's a miss rightly, so
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: they haven't felt they should resign him, and they were right,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: but that begs you know that the problem is they
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: haven't drafted.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: Well now, if you want to go back further than that,
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: but at this point, those guys would be cycled out.
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: I think they were opportunities to sign guys that they
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: didn't like Trey Flowers, that'd be a good example.
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: Yeah, Trey Flowers comes to mind. He didn't necessarily go
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: to to have a great well.
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's good. I mean he signed a big
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: money contract.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: The only guy that on this team. I mean, Jowan
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: Bentley did sign a second contract just to be fair.
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: I know he's the only one, but like just it's
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: not zero.
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: He was a fifth round pick. Yeah, so he said
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: he was only going the top three rounds.
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: Okay, all right, I didn't hear that part. And also
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: with j uh, the league pays for sacks, like whether
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: they're there sacks against Arizona or there's sacks against whoever.
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: That's what I think his point, Yeah, Paul, right, Yeah.
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: The league is gonna pay if he has another double
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: digit sax season, he's gonna get double digit money in
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: the open market. So that's just the way it works.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: And then you just wonder what another team thinks about
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: him because he's doing kind of the same thing he
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: did here in college. Is there really any reason for
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: another team to think we can we can play we
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: can pay him a.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Lot and we can play him a lot.
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: No, But I think Evan's right. You don't have to
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: envision him having a bigger role. But I envisioned him
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: getting double digit sacks as that guy for me, like
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: a closer, kind of like jeh Miller, Like I mean
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: probably not I mean that good, but that role, right,
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: that's what you're hoding.
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: Some some teams, though, like especially for three, teams have
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: that like designated pass rusher role that's on the field
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: all the time. So it's not here you're asked to
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: set the edge like that's a big part of that
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: at S.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Barrett Right, it's a example. Yep. Let's go to Joe
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: in Connecticut. Hey Joe, Oh, hey guys, Hi Joe.
- 1:21:08Speaker 23: I got a quick kind of off season question his
- 1:21:15Speaker 23: personal opinion from all you guys, how how else do
- 1:21:18Speaker 23: you personally feel the team handled Brady's departure? Are you
- 1:21:22Speaker 23: happy with how that went? Because personally I wasn't. I
- 1:21:27Speaker 23: think we had, you know, the greatest quarterback of all time, and.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel I think, I think we've been I
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: think we've been over this for a couple of years
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: worth of shows at this point. But I think, yeah,
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: I felt, and I think Fred agreed with me at
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: the time that I understand that from a logical standpoint,
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: what the Patriots did made sense, Fred, and I wanted
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: to see an exception made I just felt like this
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: is a guy who had done so much he deserved
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: to continue to play until he showed obvious signs of
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: not being able to play anymore in writing his own
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: story on the way out. And we weren't happy, right
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: am am, I speaking for you, Fred.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I wasn't happy, you know, like, but like I
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: felt at the time, it was inevitable, like Brady wasn't
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: going to get you. Brady wasn't going to get the
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: respect he felt he deserved. And you know Bill and Robert,
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: you know, both felt okay, let's let him go. Now.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Remember you know Robert made that agreement that he wasn't
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: going to franchise. I mean, yeah, put the tag on him.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: And I think that was a big concession. That was
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: That was his way of saying, thank you, I'm not
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: going to force you. I'll never trade you. He said
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: that openly, and I'm not going to put a tag
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: and you'll be able to leave a free man. And
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: I think that was Robert's give goodbye gift to him.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: But yeah, it wasn't good. I mean, and obviously you
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: know now hindsight's twenty twenty, it was the wrong one.
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: Yeah, And I'm not going off of what he did, right,
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: I'm going at the time. At the time, I think
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: Fred and I both said, I mean, how can you know,
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: why would you pull the plug on this era any
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: earlier than you needed to? And look, there were signs
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: in nineteen I don't I understand that they didn't have
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: a great offense. We've gone over all the personnel issues
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: that they had in twenty nineteen, Tom Brady didn't play.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: Very well with what he had. He didn't play very well.
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: I don't think he was Yeah, I don't think he
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: was really all in emotionally and all the things that
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: he normally did. So I understand where the Patriots were
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: coming from. I just disagreed with it, that's all.
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: I just felt like by twenty nineteen the ship had
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: kind of sailed like it had already been kind of written,
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: like it was too late. Well, that's the thing.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: I think the groundwork had been laid before.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Five years.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: Five years of groundwork.
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: He calls in to talk about something that happened three
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: years ago and then they hang out.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: No, not the first one, not the first one to
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: tire of us, listen, you know. I just think at
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: the time, the rift between Bill and Tom was just
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: too great. Like Bill was never gonna, like all of
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: a sudden, say all right, Tom, you're our guy for
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: the next three years, and we're gonna give you thirty
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: million dollars a year, and we're gonna give you a
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: you know, a wr one and all that. That's that
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: just wasn't gonna happen. If it had happened, I think
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: Brady would have been back all in. I think he
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: would have been back here, and I think he would
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: have you know, been re energized. But that was never
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: gonna happen, So I think the split had to come.
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I just think it's weird how they
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: won a super Bowl in twenty eighteen, like and and
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: and at that point it wasn't quite like this is
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: getting to be the end, But they won a super
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: Bowl even when things were kind of falling out. Just say.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: The only thing I do wonder, and it's been brought
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: up a ton, but had they not missed on the
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: Nikhil Harry pick, had they drafted a receiver that Brady
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: was like, hell, yeah, I'm reinvigorated. This is fun throwing
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: to AJ Brown or Deebo Samuel.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: You know, may changed, it might have a little bit could,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: but they still needed to pay him. They still needed
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: to pay them.
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: The reason for his pissiness in nineteen was less about
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: Nikhil Harry, right as it was about what they had
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: done to him before that. Right, It's like, I won
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: another super Bowl and it's still not enough for this.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: You can't give me a you know, a relatively long
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: contract for market money. You're you're not willing to do
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: that after all that I've proven for you. I get it,
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: I get it. You know. I also get you know,
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: the age and all that stuff. But like, this guy's different,
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: he's different. Could we play a little game what happens? Happened?
- 1:25:33Speaker 6: We still have not moved on from them.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: Would you like to play a game?
- 1:25:37Speaker 8: What?
- 1:25:37Speaker 11: Like?
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: What do you like?
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: Let's just play it out like what happens twenty twenty
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: or twenty sorry whatever. February twenty twenty, they move on
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: from the coaching staff. They say, we're going to keep
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Tom Brady. We're putting just everything into Tom Brady. We're
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: going to bring in a new from.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: Their coaching staff.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: Like, let's just they chose Tom. I didn't see that
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: coming in twenty you know, after twenty.
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: I feel like Josh McDaniels would have been the coach.
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: Okay, sure, I mean that's where're playing, that's's what we're playing.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: But you know this, well, how does that play out?
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: Brady's got three more years? You know, do they get
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: back to the super Bowl?
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: You think? Or do they you know, Brady anything's possible. No,
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: I'm serious, Yeah, No, I like it is. You know,
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: it's just an interesting sliding doors re energized Brady like
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: they did.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: You did this for me the twenty nineteen.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: Who's Honor, Who's your on her, your family's honor? Andy
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: brought that up yesterday.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know, it's like a sliding doors kind
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: of thing of what they would have done with three
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: more seasons. I mean, even after that twenty nineteen team.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: It's just I mean, we all know what the twenty
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: twenty team felt. Look like, you know, like, was there
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: any way that they could have somehow made it work
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: a little bit?
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: You know, it was hard. It would have been really hard.
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: You had two very I don't know, I want to
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: say stubborn, but set in their ways, get people, and
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: Brady and Bill you know they you know, and it
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: just wasn't gonna work.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: To mere Bird wouldn't have moved in Brady's need.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to imagine that's getting on what we
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: saw personnel wise in nineteen. It's hard to imagine that
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: team getting to the super Bowl in twenty with Brady. Now,
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: the other thing you can look at what actually did happen.
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: You know, twenty we had to reset everything, you know
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: we were, so would that have been a reset year?
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: Even more exacerbated by the fact that you had to
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: resign Brady and give him twenty five million, which reportedly
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: was what he was looking for. And so no, I
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: don't think they would have but I agree with it.
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: Just twenty five million, that's it.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: Oh God, Neil and New Brunswick. I caught a little
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: of the playbook with guest hosts Sean from Vancouver and
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Todd from Todd from North Carolina. Sean I thought did great.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: He was honest, not afraid to give his opinion, even
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: had some jokes. Todd was Todd the Eric of callers.
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: Oh wow, we liked the caller on Caller Crome. We
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: do to that way, we don't have to do it.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: I was quite surprised by Fred on Tuesday defending Joe
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: Judge so much. Can't we just say thank you to
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: him like we were instructed by Fred on Matt Patricia
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: and move on the giants? Did you a huge favor
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: taking this guy from you and you bring him back?
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: Why we talk about Bill trending towards players who would
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: be suited for the NFL game twenty years ago. Does
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: he have the same flaw with coaches?
- 1:28:17Speaker 6: I think for me, the thing with Joe Judge with
- 1:28:21Speaker 6: Bill is that, like you said yesterday, Joe Judge knows
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: football like Jojudg is a good football coach in the
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: respect of he understands x's and o's, he knows techniques
- 1:28:33Speaker 6: like he knows the game, and he's experienced in that regard.
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: I think the one disconnect that I think we all
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: see with Joe Judge that maybe they don't agree with
- 1:28:42Speaker 6: or just don't think is true or whatever, is that
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: he like the people person like he's not. It's a
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: personality thing, it's a relationships thing. No one's denying that
- 1:28:54Speaker 6: he knows that Joe Judge is an experienced good football
- 1:28:57Speaker 6: He's been coaching football at the NFL level for fifteen years.
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: Like no one's saying that that's not the case. I
- 1:29:04Speaker 6: just you wonder about him. And yesterday I admit like
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: hearing him barking out orders and stuff like that, again,
- 1:29:11Speaker 6: I was like like, I don't know, Like that's just
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: not it's just not really. You look at how the
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: other other coaches do it, even just on this team.
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: You just don't hear that type of stuff.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: I don't know. Special teams has always been that way.
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: You know, they get their moment, you know, okay, seventh
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: and seven then special you know, and they have to
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: make no they honestly, they have to make the most.
- 1:29:34Speaker 6: That's fair.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: They have to make the most out of that time.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: And it's always like one guy barking and I will I.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: Will say this for Fred that's a fresh point, brilliant
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: for special teams just by definition, it's more spread out,
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: so you do kind of have to have a little
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: bit of a louder voice. But I also think whatever's
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: talking about is true. It's like there's a difference between
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: like Brad Seal you are, you know, you need to
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: know who to block, Like you could hear his voice
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: ringing through the stadium right with Joe Jadgson just always seems.
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: Like he's screaming at somebody and like it's just it's
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: about everything. Like it's one thing to just say like hey,
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: you guys said no tomatoes. You know, it's just like
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: he's yelling at everybody all the time.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: Uh spiing fres Now for each of you, what one
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: feature of Max game is most important to improve if
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: he's to notably exceed his rookie season performance. What one
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: Performance under pressure.
- 1:30:29Speaker 6: Yeah, i'd agree with that.
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: I would too, pocket presence, slash games.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: On the line, I would say with that comes to recognition,
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: you know, like under pressure, are you recognizing what's happening?
- 1:30:45Speaker 6: So you're talking about like clutch yeah, but but just that.
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: But also it.
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: Doesn't even have to be like game running drives. It
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: just has to be like, look, the tenor of the
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: game right now is that your team needs to drive.
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: Like the four quarters of you know, like Minnesota last year,
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: great and then nothing in the fourth quarter, you know,
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: four quarters of high level.
- 1:31:02Speaker 6: I just wanted to take because I also think that
- 1:31:05Speaker 6: performance literally under pressure is something that he could be
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: a lot better at. So I just wanted to clarify
- 1:31:11Speaker 6: the line.
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: I think like, look, you know, and maybe he's looking
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: for like arm strength or you know, like those kind
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: of like technical like you know, physical actutes. I don't
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: none of it matters, Like its just performers. Like he
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: throws the ball well enough, he has enough you know,
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: athletic talent to play in He can in this league.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: Mac can play in this league, he throws the ball well,
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: he can play in this league.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: I'll say that.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: If he's given the structure around him, he throws the
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: ball well enough to get the job done. Now can
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: he do if it breaks down? I don't think he
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: has that skills.
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: I think, like when you look at guys like Kirk
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: Cousins or Jimmy G or Derek Carr, Like, I think
- 1:31:43Speaker 6: Mac is in the same physical ballparks as those types
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: of guys. But you know, those types of guys don't
- 1:31:52Speaker 6: always have what Deuce is looking for, right, they don't
- 1:31:55Speaker 6: always have the moxy.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, uh, though, I think that's a
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: pretty good group that you just came up with off
- 1:32:02Speaker 4: the top of your head. I would say, just player
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: for player. I would put Jimmy G and Carr athletically
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: ahead of Cousins and Mac, and I would probably put
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: Mac fourth on that list in terms of overall skill set. Now,
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: where he makes up for it, hopefully, where Tom will
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: see it, you know, is with his aptitude and in
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: his ability to understand what they're doing.
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: And that's the thing. If that's a superpower, let's see
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: it now under pressure, what's his decision making.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: For as inconsistent as some of those guys have been. Now,
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: I don't think Cousins has been great under the gun.
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: Now he has some like last second wins under his belt,
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: but not big game wins under his Maybe the one
- 1:32:45Speaker 4: against the Patriots is the biggest one, right, Derek Carr
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: is a guy who has been pretty good in tough
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: spots at times, just not consistently enough. Jimmy, it's all
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: Health's a that's a different I.
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: Just wonder like, and this is it could be a
- 1:32:59Speaker 6: question for the panel, like if Mac, let's say Mac
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: ends up being Kirk Cousins, Like that's would you rather
- 1:33:06Speaker 6: ten years of Kirk Cousins or would you rather keep
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: trying for the Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen?
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: Right, Well, the thing is, you guys.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: Know what I think if Kirk Cousins had Bill Belichick
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: as his head coach, would he have had I won
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: a championship right now?
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: Then I then I want to keep I.
- 1:33:25Speaker 6: Don't know if you would have won a championship, And
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: I don't know if you would have would win a championship,
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: But I think Bill with Kirk Cousins is a playoff
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: team every year like I think you're I mean, the
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: Vikings are a playoff team almost every year with Kirk Cousins,
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: So I just I.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Want championships, you know. I want a quarterback who's good
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: enough to you know, he doesn't have this guy I
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: want to. I want a quarterback who can win US
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: a championship.
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: And I am assuming the panel thinks that Kirk Cousins
- 1:33:51Speaker 6: can is not capable.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: No, I'm not disagreeing.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: I'm saying I'm saying if he's I think I'm probably
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: lower on Cousins than the panel.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: If Bill can win a championship of them, that I'm
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: okay with Kirk Cousins.
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: But you're saying, no, I've got Recncy bias, like I
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: always do. But Kirk Cousins played out of his mind
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: against Patriots last year, so I have I just watch
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: against other teams.
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: That's the thing, though, is like, and the reason why
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: I bring up Kirk Cousins. I think that there giants
- 1:34:15Speaker 6: in the playoffs at home. He's a pretty volatile quarterback.
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: I think you either really think he stinks or you
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: think that he's better than people think. And I don't
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: necessarily know if I think he's better than people think.
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: But I think he's good enough. And I just look
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: at Mac and I think that he can be.
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: You're probably right about Cousins. He's probably good enough.
- 1:34:32Speaker 6: Yeah, especially when you're thrown to Justin Jefferson, Like, you know,
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: I'm okay, but.
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: He's probably just my stubbornness aside. He's probably good enough.
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: I just think he's one of those guys that what
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: do I need him for? If I have everything else,
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: I can put anybody in there, right, and I would
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: say anybody's good enough, you know, short of like Zach Wilson.
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: I mean, he's the poster child for this kind of quarterback.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: You know, just like he used to be.
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: Andy Dalton, the minimum acceptable guy that you can talk
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: yourself into that maybe we have a chance to know.
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: Andy Dalton's another great one. You know, those Bengals teams
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: that he inherited his first three four years excellent, excellent teams,
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: and everybody was like, he's really good.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: I fell into it. Yeah, So I'm not even making
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: fun of anybody. I'm making fun of myself. I thought
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: he was part of that.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: Now the rest of his career has told us he
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: was along for the ride, like based on what he's
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: done since he's not had that kind of ability around him.
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: And I think justin Jefferson's a probably.
- 1:35:31Speaker 6: Because I tend to lean, you know, into the mactruther
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: side of things, like I tend to be on Max
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: side on a lot of things. But even I can
- 1:35:40Speaker 6: recognize two years in that is Mac ever going to
- 1:35:44Speaker 6: be a generational, like elite MVP caliber quarterback Like I
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: don't think so that's going to be the reason you
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: win right now. You can put it that way too,
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: and you might say, that's okay, I don't need my
- 1:35:56Speaker 6: quarterback to be the version I win.
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: That's I think Bill would probably subscribe. I can't talk
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: myself into that, But what I could talk myself into
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: is that maybe it just all clicks and they get
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: the right offensive coordinator. They might not have a number one,
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: but they've got enough variation in their receivers and backs
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: and weapons and all that stuff to make it and
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: you know that it all clicks at once and there's
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: nobody who's the superstar. But you know, I still think
- 1:36:18Speaker 3: that that is possible. But I honestly I question it
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: now in this league with you know, guys like Mahomes,
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: and you know, just the talent level at the quarterback
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: position and how quickly teams can score. And I mean,
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: it's just it feels like if you don't honestly go
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: into the playoffs feeling like our team could maybe score
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: it any minute if they had to, like they were
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: a play away to score, Like I don't. It's hard
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: to win in the league this year.
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: If you don't feel that way, you don't have that.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: David writes in it's the off season, so it's the
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: only time to ask these questions. Fred is a laptop
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: in front of him, and it looks like Evan has
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: a mouse and keyboard in front of him. Whatnot? Right now,
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: I was just wondering what those were for. I'm reading
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: your email, That's what it's for. Another note, maybe you
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: should give Mike a keyboard so we can stop unscrewing
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: that pen.
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: Dude, I'm so conscious of like I fiddle, I fiddle
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: with this, yeah, fiddle with this.
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: I guess my phone was a mouse. Maybe I don't know.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I kind of.
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: I could see with the Death Star, yeah yeah.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I try.
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: I like to have my just a roster so I
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: have like a visual queue of guys.
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: You're a print out guy.
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: Just that's all I need in front of me in
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: case I'm trying to think of like somebody's like what player,
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: and then I can.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: I don't like to have stuff to get to big.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: I'm with Mike.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: I'm big on having the stuff in front of me
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: when there are specific things that I feel will come
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: up on printouts, and I have that, and I have
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: a read Sometimes this Grandpa needs Grandpa needs the readers. Yeah,
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: so sometimes you know this. I knew today we were
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: just gonna be talking about what we saw yesterday, so
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: I didn't know it's all up in this that's in
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: the steel trap. And I asked me about it in
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: three weeks forget about it gone. You asked me about
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: what happened in two thousand t A.
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: I mean that was great.
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: You shot Baker, the touchdown maker. I'll tell you about him.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: The phones are stacked up eight five five pats five hundred.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Let's go to the UK where Claire is on the phone.
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: What's up Claire? Everyone? He girl, Fred friend, have you
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: read out my emails because I've missed a.
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: Little bit in between no emails?
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: Is that plural?
- 1:38:16Speaker 14: No?
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: I haven't read you just one, just one.
- 1:38:20Speaker 10: Basically, I need to agree with Deuce on Bearringer.
- 1:38:22Speaker 22: I think he's like, Yeah, he's my guy.
- 1:38:24Speaker 8: He's kind of sneaky sexy.
- 1:38:26Speaker 15: I think he's the thing this year.
- 1:38:27Speaker 10: I'm really excited about that.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: You like guys and glasses.
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: Well, Claire, you know I do have my readers back
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: in my office.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: Cheky monkey.
- 1:38:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:38:45Speaker 10: Well, when Vixy was on my show, we talked about it,
- 1:38:48Speaker 10: and I hinted that I think might be barrangary, sneaky sexy,
- 1:38:51Speaker 10: and he may be an adult movie star.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: Oh. I took a turn.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: And Jimmy psa Bearing Bearinger?
- 1:39:03Speaker 6: What's Bearringer? That's the thing, right, It's like a company
- 1:39:06Speaker 6: or something.
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: I knew a kid, but yeah, just I'm just telling
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: for everybody.
- 1:39:10Speaker 8: My question was, there's no time coach on staff on
- 1:39:13Speaker 8: like patrios dot com website, and I just wondered if
- 1:39:15Speaker 8: you'd heard anything about it.
- 1:39:17Speaker 6: Will the beings will lying lying then? Today?
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, he's a young dude too. He's like I
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: seemed like he's fresh off college or something. But yeah, no,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: he's there. Well, Joe Judge will be the officially.
- 1:39:34Speaker 10: On the website.
- 1:39:34Speaker 15: I mean, he's definitely the tiant coach.
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: That he's out there.
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: Yeah, well, they said, Bill said yesterday, you know, very
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: nice of him to let us know that they'll get
- 1:39:44Speaker 6: around to announce coaching staff soon, so maybe one of us.
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: In all serious he did add something along the lines
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: that we're.
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: Still working through some things, right, which maybe was just
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: a throwaway line that didn't have any meaning. But I
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: don't think he has a lot of those.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: I think usually when he says something well, no, no,
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: not about tight ends, just about the titles and the staff.
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: You just keep your tight end infatuation in check.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it drives PR crazy because they need to print
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: the media guide and they they that's always the last
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: thing they're waiting for.
- 1:40:20Speaker 6: I imagine there's one person in PR in particular.
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, thanks Claire. Good to hear from you. Dan
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: in Virginia and Michigan.
- 1:40:28Speaker 14: What's up, Dan, I wanted to say congratulations to Pull
- 1:40:34Speaker 14: on his boy graduating. I'll go mine's coming up next year,
- 1:40:38Speaker 14: so I know there's a lot of work that goes
- 1:40:40Speaker 14: into that.
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: You can get Dusty though, thank you very much.
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: Of course. It's the most beautiful week, most beautiful week.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: Of weather we've had so far this season. But that's
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: all going to come to a screeching halt evidently on Saturday,
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: when it's going to be fifty eight, rainy and windy. Yeah,
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: we have read so when I have one hundred people
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: coming to my.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: House, still got the pool open them? You have a
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: graduation party at your house? Yeah, that's just for family,
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: though not for his friends to oh, boy, ready for that?
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: And it's just my friend many Ray.
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: No, I'd be ready for it. On a day like today,
- 1:41:13Speaker 4: we'd be fine. But what I'm hearing about Saturday, I
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: have no idea what Beth and I are going to
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: do in my house is not big enough for the
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: amount of people that will be there.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: Got a heat?
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: I don't. I don't have your estate.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: Okay, I don't have a pool anymore, Paul, you have
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: a pool? Still hear about Freda Pelooza.
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: Freda were legendary, good times, good times. Uh, don't hang up.
- 1:41:40Speaker 14: You were discussing. You're discussing coaching shortcomings before you know,
- 1:41:44Speaker 14: Patricia Judge and so forth, And it seems a big
- 1:41:47Speaker 14: part of their vailue to to you know, go anyway
- 1:41:51Speaker 14: with their other teams and This goes all the way
- 1:41:53Speaker 14: back to McDaniels and something even Bill let Brown is
- 1:41:57Speaker 14: that it's the people skills. It's not the football skills.
- 1:41:59Speaker 14: It really seem to be that these guys just don't
- 1:42:01Speaker 14: do well with people. And does that make sin? That
- 1:42:04Speaker 14: was even part of Bill's problem back in Cleveland was
- 1:42:07Speaker 14: that he just didn't didn't go uh, didn't get along
- 1:42:10Speaker 14: well with people?
- 1:42:11Speaker 22: Is that?
- 1:42:12Speaker 10: You know?
- 1:42:13Speaker 14: Is that something particular to New England that we've got
- 1:42:15Speaker 14: a lot of guys that just don't play well with others?
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: Org, Yeah, I mean it's it's tough. Well, when you're
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: a young coach like McDaniels was when he went to
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: Denver and you make big changes like he did at
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: the quarterback position, it's tough. It better work he's doing
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: it again. Yeah, it better work or you know, you
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: lose some guys, all right.
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: But I would never characterize Josh as a guy who
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: is not personable.
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: No, no, mao.
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: You know a lot of the coaches and it's like,
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: I don't think of Bill O'Brien is not being personal.
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: But you know, but I think Joe Judge has that
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: reputation being a little bit.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: And Patricia, you know famously went to Detroit and with
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: the sprinting and you know, telling people they don't have
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: any rings, and he's got rings and all that.
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: But again that's I think that's an error in leadership,
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: not necessarily a personality. Like I think that the similar
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: mistake that a lot of the guys have made is
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: they've all tried to emulate Bill. They've all tried to
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: be ruling from above with an iron fist. One problem,
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: you don't have the rings that validate that.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: If Bill, you know, Bill couldn't do it in Cleveland,
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: you know, and yeah, Bill, and if two thousands.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: I mean, that's a great point.
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: Like Bill was probably no different personality wise in Cleveland
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: than he is now. Right, But he's able to succeed
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: now without being the most personable person that we've seen
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: because he's one, right, and they they, I mean, you
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: hear the guys talk about it like he's one of
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: the best. He's done this, he's done that, and his
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: track record speaks for itself. Yeah, So this is like
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: a madic respect that's attached to that.
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: I think Rabel's an interesting person because he's got like,
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: you know, like he's a ballbuster, but like this person
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: deering about him, and you know, it's just I think
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: there's a lot of different ways to do it. They'll
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: bottom line is like, here's your team, gonna listen to
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: you and buy into it.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: You're in charge of fifty three guys, you know, plus
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: practice squats, the coaches, and they need to think that
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: you know what you're talking about, because if they don't
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: think you know what you're talking about, you just lose
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: the room, you know. Uh So you have to have
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: that gravitas. And if you don't have it right away,
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: then you better know what you're talking about and eventually
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: get results or people just they want to win.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, well that's what you hear, Like, you know,
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: young coaches talk about young coaches who are you know,
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: thrown into a room maybe with guys that are that
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: are older than you as a coach. And I've heard
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: some you know, people just saying like they just the
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: players just want to know that you're putting them in
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: positions to succeed, that you're helping them be successful.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: By listening to you, I'll get yeah, and we'll win.
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: And if they do, they start to earn the trust
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: and then it builds and.
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: Ye thanks, Dan, appreciate the call. Let's go to Willem
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: and philam, what's up? William? Nice?
- 1:45:10Speaker 12: What's going on?
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: How you doing good?
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: Okay?
- 1:45:14Speaker 8: Uh have a question for for Evan or not? Evan? So,
- 1:45:19Speaker 8: are you familiar with the quarterback from the USC named
- 1:45:23Speaker 8: Caleb Williams and lost thing's name?
- 1:45:24Speaker 22: Correct?
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: You are?
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: Yes? You never heard of him.
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: As the other day?
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: What's up?
- 1:45:33Speaker 8: Just here my take on it, Evan. Don't be sucking
- 1:45:36Speaker 8: your teeth and row your eyes and you always.
- 1:45:41Speaker 11: Like that?
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:45:43Speaker 8: So look, so let's say the pictures, you know, they're
- 1:45:46Speaker 8: like they go eight and nine again or nine to
- 1:45:49Speaker 8: eight whatever though, man just can't get us over the hump, right,
- 1:45:52Speaker 8: And that's just another loss on Bill too. On top
- 1:45:54Speaker 8: of it, do you do you see a scenario where
- 1:45:58Speaker 8: Bill just said, you know what, I just makes it forget.
- 1:46:02Speaker 8: You know, let's just going for the number one drastick
- 1:46:06Speaker 8: and try and trade up and just you know it
- 1:46:08Speaker 8: might say three first round taste the couple of dude,
- 1:46:11Speaker 8: I don't want three feat your stulf. I don't know,
- 1:46:13Speaker 8: but do you see I guess the Bill would do
- 1:46:16Speaker 8: something like that.
- 1:46:17Speaker 6: No, I don't see a scenario. Then you guys can
- 1:46:23Speaker 6: disagree with me where Bill would give up significant draft
- 1:46:26Speaker 6: capital for one player.
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: Ever, so we're eight to nine picking around fourteen, that's
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: hard to get up high enough for that, I would agree.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: I think the only way to get him is that
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: you stink, stink, you lose a couple.
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: You don't have to stink. You can instead of going
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: eight to nine, if you you know, even seven six,
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: get you top ten. Now I'm not closing that door.
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: I agree with Evan. Fifteen to one, that's a lot. Well,
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: but if it's like eight to one, maybe that might
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: be something a little bit more palatable.
- 1:47:00Speaker 6: The Panthers what they were right around that, like eight
- 1:47:02Speaker 6: or nine to one. And as for Bryce Young, who
- 1:47:06Speaker 6: is nowhere near the prospect that Caleb Williams is. So
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: to get that guy, I like, I don't know, I'm
- 1:47:14Speaker 6: going to have to give up you know, a real.
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: Like the whole farm.
- 1:47:20Speaker 8: Yeah, so what so what do you do? I mean
- 1:47:22Speaker 8: I heard you talking about Kirk Cousins, and I'm like,
- 1:47:24Speaker 8: he's been hearing the NFL pocket. No, he's not dancing. No,
- 1:47:30Speaker 8: so you want to you want something better than that
- 1:47:32Speaker 8: or even Kirk cousins. But my question to you, I mean,
- 1:47:35Speaker 8: you know, you the football analyst and everything, so you know,
- 1:47:38Speaker 8: I'm just trying to get your what did we do?
- 1:47:40Speaker 8: We went eight and nine?
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: Again?
- 1:47:43Speaker 8: Bill can't do whatever again, So that's a strike on Bill.
- 1:47:46Speaker 8: You know, mister krafft be pissed off because you didn't
- 1:47:48Speaker 8: make the playoffs?
- 1:47:50Speaker 11: What do we do?
- 1:47:51Speaker 6: I think you know my opinion only, and then you
- 1:47:54Speaker 6: guys can all again disagree. If I were the Patriots
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: at that point, I'd be going for a veteran quarterback.
- 1:48:00Speaker 6: I just I don't really have any interest in going
- 1:48:03Speaker 6: back into the rookie well again in trying to at best,
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: what you're trying to do is what you're trying to
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: do now, which is like win with all the other
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: parts and all and you know, everybody pulling together and
- 1:48:15Speaker 6: not just the quarterback. Like a trade for another or
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: a move for a veteran. There's always one veteran that
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: moves in the offseason. This year was Aaron Rodgers, last
- 1:48:26Speaker 6: year was Russell Wilson. Like whoever that ends up being that,
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: that's what I especially if Bill's gonna still be the coach,
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: I don't really have much interest in Bill trying to
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: groom another young quarterback because the time he doesn't have
- 1:48:38Speaker 6: the time. And he also just I don't know if
- 1:48:40Speaker 6: he connects with this generation well enough. Because as much
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: as you can call Mac Jones a baby, and you
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: can call Mac Jones, you know, his pouting and his
- 1:48:51Speaker 6: tantrums like guess what, like, that's a lot of athletes
- 1:48:55Speaker 6: are gonna be wired.
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: That way nowadays.
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: And if they get Caleb Williams here, they get Drake
- 1:49:00Speaker 6: may here or one of these kJ Jefferson and it
- 1:49:04Speaker 6: doesn't go well right out of the gate and there's
- 1:49:06Speaker 6: some friction there. It's going to be the same story.
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: So I just have really no interest in going back
- 1:49:11Speaker 6: in the draft for a quarterback. I would at that
- 1:49:14Speaker 6: point try to maximize the last two or three years
- 1:49:17Speaker 6: that Bill has with a proven veteran guy.
- 1:49:20Speaker 8: That's just me though, Just one more thing and then
- 1:49:23Speaker 8: I'm out Theel Wallie and whatnot. I'll just try to
- 1:49:26Speaker 8: put this all in one though. Well, in terms of
- 1:49:29Speaker 8: fight for Matt Jones, though, I get it, you know,
- 1:49:32Speaker 8: the punt and all that deal. But the man wants
- 1:49:34Speaker 8: to win. I think that's that's his frustration. He really
- 1:49:38Speaker 8: wants to win and you see how things is and
- 1:49:40Speaker 8: he could see it from his perspective as a quarter there.
- 1:49:44Speaker 8: I know they was gonna say. I ain't saying that
- 1:49:46Speaker 8: Max should be in a stame page with them, but
- 1:49:49Speaker 8: I don't know. They just need to come together the
- 1:49:50Speaker 8: pictures also, they're just too much in the news. Is
- 1:49:53Speaker 8: always that they've been in like twenty twenty season, and
- 1:49:56Speaker 8: it was always something the page is this the I mean,
- 1:50:00Speaker 8: y'all was telling us everything from all up in there
- 1:50:03Speaker 8: and then we are again starting off on a bad
- 1:50:07Speaker 8: foot with over Joe Judge. He can't even be nowhere
- 1:50:12Speaker 8: to need to pa. But I'm gonna leave that alone though.
- 1:50:14Speaker 8: But but I'll leave it at jfros. But you know,
- 1:50:16Speaker 8: I just want to know what would we do with
- 1:50:18Speaker 8: that's all them? But have a good one next weekend.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: Okay, it's tough question.
- 1:50:23Speaker 3: I mean in some ways, it's just I mean, it's
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: like we've always talked about it's hardest to be in
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: the middle, Like it's the decisions are easy when you're
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: a three four win team or or a three or
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: four wins lost team.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: If it was easy, every team would do and keep.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: Blasting out eight win season after eight win season, you
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: know what, eventually you're gonna have to say, Look, we
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: might have to bite the bullet and take a half
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: step back to you know, get past this mediocrity that
- 1:50:42Speaker 3: we've had a few I.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: Think William's point is it's that or you bite the
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: bullet and sell the farm to get that guy.
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, no, I don't. I mean, if you
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: get to that point, I wouldn't. I mean, I wouldn't
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: be against it.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: Alan in Texas, I've been listening to the show for
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: eight or more years, and I really enjoyed the football
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: information as well as the entertain When Andy left, I
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: was a bit concerned and who would provide the entertainment?
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: He seemed to be able to start an argument over
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: any topic. That being said, the new lineup is fantastic.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: Deuce has the fanboy energy that is contagious, and Evans's
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: knowledge is very informative. Man Fred, your humor at times
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: is subtle, genius. Paul has the knowledge and the Italian
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: attitude that I grew up with. My question is this,
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: how much of being a coordinator is an art form?
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: That's kind of a segue. How much is knowledge of
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: the game, which do you think is more important? Is
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: the art form harder to teach? And is that what
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: separates a good coordinator from a mediocre one. Well, Andy
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: always said that calling plays is more of an art sure,
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: while a lot of the other stuff is science, you know.
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: And that's the thing, like we've always I've always talked
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: about coordinator. Different teams have different roles for that title,
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: Like there's the architect of the offense, there's the guy
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: who comes in with the game plan, and then the
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: guy who calls the plays. And sometimes it's all the same,
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: and that's a true coordinator, you know, somebody who does
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: all three things. But as we've seen, that's not always
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: the case on all teams, Like sometimes the guy calling
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: the plays isn't necessarily the guy architecting the offense.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: And some teams don't even have the architect of the
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: offense on staff, like us, what do you mean it's
- 1:52:24Speaker 3: Josh McDaniels didn't design that offense. Bill O'Brien didn't design that.
- 1:52:29Speaker 15: I know.
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: But I'm just talking about the architect of heaven who
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: this edition of the offense this year's off Yeah, yeah,
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: but I'm just talking about, like who's in charge of
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: the offense this year, like the overall, like, this is
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: what our offense is going to look like this year.
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: It's Bill O'Brien. Yes, it's Bill O'Brien.
- 1:52:46Speaker 6: And that's what I've always like wanted. And Josh was
- 1:52:50Speaker 6: this through and through like the head coach of the offense,
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: Like so you're not the head coach of the whole
- 1:52:56Speaker 6: team like Bill, but Bill O'Brien is the head coach
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: of the Offense's it's his vision, it's his play sheet,
- 1:53:03Speaker 6: it's it's his group like that, And that's I think
- 1:53:05Speaker 6: what when this team has thrived, it's been Charlie Weiss,
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: it's been Josh McDaniels, it's been Bill O'Brien, it's been
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: when they've had totally agree that guy.
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: Right, And I think most teams have that. There are
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: some like Kansas City that Andy Reid who's the head coach,
- 1:53:18Speaker 4: but he's that guy, he's the head coach of the offense, yea.
- 1:53:22Speaker 4: But most teams have a guy.
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: I do think the question is interesting though, just the
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: different philosophy kind of on the offensive side of the
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: ball versus the defensive side.
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: Of the ball.
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: Jokes aside, I mean, I would. I would think it
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: was probably a very interesting interview just to talk to
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: Matt Patricia about the different mindset of offensively trying to
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: be creative and trying to you know, put the defense
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: in a pickle. You can't really be creative in play calling,
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: Like I think the creativity and defense is probably set
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: up before the game. But you know, it's almost the
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: level of anticipation that you have to have on the defense.
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: That's what I think Bill now still to this day,
- 1:53:55Speaker 4: I think that's.
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: Bill seeing what's going on out there, seeing.
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: Well, adjusting to what's going on.
- 1:54:01Speaker 4: Many times you see them go the other team goes
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: right down the field on it, and then all of
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: a sudden he chunes back to the field for like
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: the next two minutes. He talks to the defensive players
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: and they come out and it's like totally right.
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: But you know, going back to like, you know, young coaches,
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: if I were to give, you know, advice to any
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: young coach, I'd say, don't be afraid to hire coordinators
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: who are smarter than you. You know, if it's your
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: first time being a head coach, you know, focus on
- 1:54:28Speaker 2: that and not being the architect of the defense. Higher
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: really strong coordinators, you know, and eventually maybe you don't
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: need them. Then then you can start you know, while
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: you have these you know, experienced guys, you're grooming young
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: guys to eventually take their place. But get people around
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: you that are have more experience than you do so
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: that you can focus on being a head coach.
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: Yeah. I don't know if they had more experience than Bill.
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: But like some of the staffs that the Patriots have
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: had in the dynasty run, like are just ridiculous. Look
- 1:55:00Speaker 6: back at like the twenty fourteen and really twenty sixteen
- 1:55:03Speaker 6: when Scarman came back. I mean it's crazy. It's like
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: Brian Dabele was coaching tight ends on that staff. You know,
- 1:55:09Speaker 6: it's and you go down the whole list. These guys
- 1:55:11Speaker 6: that are are now coming up to being like co
- 1:55:14Speaker 6: head coaching candidates were like low level assistants on those
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: staffs like that, those types of staffs, you can tell
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: why they were so successful. But he loaded.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: But even when Bill came here, you know, he had
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: Romeo Crenell, Yeah, Charlie Weiss, he had you know, Brad Seely,
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: I don't know when Seely was here, brat the Audio Starve. Yeah,
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: these are all guys that a lot of experience, and
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: so by having those guys, the young guys could learn
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: under that.
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: To Evan's point, Josh McDaniels and Brian Dable were coaching assistants. Yeah,
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: and they lat Patricia was a coaching assistant those guys. Yeah,
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: that's how they learned.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: You're speaking to another point of you know, they've lost
- 1:55:51Speaker 3: a lot of those guys, and now are these young
- 1:55:53Speaker 3: guys that have been kind of added over the last
- 1:55:55Speaker 3: couple of seasons, Evan Rothsteins, like, are those guys going
- 1:55:58Speaker 3: to develop into those those kind of caliber.
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: The most recent exodus forced some of the coaching assistant
- 1:56:05Speaker 4: types into positional roles probably before they were ready for them.
- 1:56:10Speaker 4: And I think that's been part of I mean, I'm
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: not saying it's like an underrated part because people talk
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: about it a lot, but I do think it is
- 1:56:16Speaker 4: a big part of the struggles. You know, it's not
- 1:56:20Speaker 4: just Tom Brady left, their frauds, It's not Nothing is
- 1:56:23Speaker 4: ever that simple.
- 1:56:24Speaker 3: It's an opportunity for like Mayo Covington, you know, those
- 1:56:27Speaker 3: kind of guys that you know are now really starting
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: to get noticed around the way.
- 1:56:30Speaker 4: Do you think Steve Belichick is a much better coach
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: today than the guy who went in front of the
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: safeties and said, yeah, I know coaching safety. Like of
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: course he's grown into that.
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: Raisin Washington will finish up the show with your call.
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: What's up? Ray?
- 1:56:46Speaker 8: So I'm wondering with Evan posted something on his Twitter
- 1:56:49Speaker 8: earlier that was throwing match at a bomb to Taekwon
- 1:56:53Speaker 8: and I want to know how far that one.
- 1:56:55Speaker 6: Above forty yards?
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: I would say in the air.
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the play itself was about would have been
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: a touchdown. Yeah, nobody there. Yeah.
- 1:57:04Speaker 4: Badar just retweeted it, by the way and said this
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: was not against air.
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: I know nobody's hating, but I think that he's probably
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: he's on my back backing us up because he's probably listening.
- 1:57:14Speaker 6: Yeah, Hey, everybody's hating. It's just a it's a it's
- 1:57:17Speaker 6: a clip from the spring, all right, we don't we
- 1:57:19Speaker 6: don't need to. No one's saying they're winning the Super
- 1:57:21Speaker 6: Bowl because Mac completed to pass the Taekwon thoron on
- 1:57:24Speaker 6: May thirty. First, thank you, thanks for the call, all right, Ray,
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: thanks for the call.
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
