- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, here we go. I remember two on a Monday,
- 0:02Speaker 1: correcting and Lyndahl Rally House Football Monday rally house shop
- 0:06Speaker 1: every team in town, Jeff Legwald brought to you by
- 0:09Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You start with the job, you end with a career, Jeff.
- 0:17Speaker 1: That's the matchup. It's gonna be Buffalo. Just just first, blush,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and let's start on the Denver side of things. Where
- 0:26Speaker 1: where do the Broncos have the greatest advantage over this
- 0:30Speaker 1: Bills team coming into Mile High on Saturday.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I don't think the Bills defense is you know, quite
- 0:36Speaker 2: up to the level of you know, their quarterback for example,
- 0:39Speaker 2: of their own run game offensively, So I think the
- 0:43Speaker 2: issues they've had this year trace to a defense that
- 0:49Speaker 2: probably isn't as good as last season. So they need
- 0:51Speaker 2: even more from the quarterback they expect to get so
- 0:56Speaker 2: much from in every game.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, their run defense is one of the worst in
- 1:00Speaker 1: the NFL. Fifth worst run defense in the league in
- 1:03Speaker 1: terms of yards per game, fourth worst by EPA per run. Aloud,
- 1:07Speaker 1: they surrendered five point one yards per carry during the
- 1:10Speaker 1: regular season, third worst in the NFL. Here's the question,
- 1:15Speaker 1: though Jeff is are this Broncos offense without JK. Dobbins
- 1:20Speaker 1: are they are they positioned to take advantage of it?
- 1:23Speaker 1: And is the play caller willing to try and take
- 1:26Speaker 1: advantage of that?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Why? You know, I think you raise a good point
- 1:31Speaker 2: because I personally believe Jacksonville went home because they didn't
- 1:36Speaker 2: do it enough. They had a very pass oriented play
- 1:41Speaker 2: caller in his first game as an NFL head coach.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And you know, I just I can't get past this
- 1:51Speaker 2: that in the second quarter, Towton has three carries on
- 1:57Speaker 2: three consecutive plays to hell of a for forty seven yards. Yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 2: he has three carries on three consecutive plays for forty
- 2:06Speaker 2: seven yards and touches the ball one more time in the.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Game, one more carry the rest of the game.
- 2:14Speaker 3: You deserve to lose.
- 2:15Speaker 2: If that's how you're gonna call a game. I mean,
- 2:18Speaker 2: they didn't stop it. You got away from it because
- 2:22Speaker 2: you chose to go tour your play sheet. And if
- 2:26Speaker 2: Sean Payton does that, they will surrender home field advantage
- 2:30Speaker 2: and they will give up a very good opportunity to
- 2:33Speaker 2: play in the big game.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Okay, So then who can be the X factor in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the Denver run game RJ. Harvey has been inconsistent at best, Like,
- 2:42Speaker 1: is there a world where Sean Payton would give the
- 2:44Speaker 1: ball to Julia McLoughlin anywhere between eight to twelve times
- 2:48Speaker 1: on the ground.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, I think one thing in favor of that is
- 2:52Speaker 2: Buffalo's metrics outside the tackles are horrific in run defense.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So if they're looking yet the metrics you know at
- 3:02Speaker 2: Deuve Valley and which they are, they look at everything
- 3:05Speaker 2: and you're going to see that and it's going to
- 3:08Speaker 2: show up on the game video over and over again.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So pressing the issue to the outside has worked well
- 3:15Speaker 2: for teams who are willing to do it. I think
- 3:18Speaker 2: the danger that happens is if you're not good on
- 3:21Speaker 2: early downs against the Bills, even as bad as their
- 3:25Speaker 2: run defense has been, if you're not good on early downs,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you give them the chance to do what they do
- 3:30Speaker 2: best on defense, which is disguise coverage with their safeties.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And if you talk to defensive coaches and ask them
- 3:40Speaker 2: about bow Nicks, they will tell you they think he
- 3:43Speaker 2: has the most difficult time with disguised coverage with the safeties.
- 3:48Speaker 2: So I don't think Sean Payton or the Broncos should
- 3:51Speaker 2: want to play with the one strength the Bills have
- 3:55Speaker 2: on defense, and that is if you give them the
- 3:59Speaker 2: down and distance to play the mix and match game
- 4:02Speaker 2: at safety and disguise things. You want to make them
- 4:06Speaker 2: play straight up, have to bring the safety down to
- 4:09Speaker 2: defend the run and give your quarterback much better looks
- 4:13Speaker 2: out of.
- 4:13Speaker 3: The play action.
- 4:14Speaker 2: If you allow them to keep their safeties deep and
- 4:18Speaker 2: rotate and flip flop and all those things, you're playing
- 4:21Speaker 2: right into the one thing they do well.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Jeff, do you like this matchup? Of all the matchups
- 4:27Speaker 4: are gonna have had, do you like this matchup?
- 4:30Speaker 3: You know, I.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Know I'm old, I'm an old person, but I always
- 4:37Speaker 2: think when you're in the playoffs, you want to play
- 4:41Speaker 2: the defenses that are not as physical and that they
- 4:46Speaker 2: have good players, and they've played good defense in the past.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But I think they've struggled with injury this year and
- 4:53Speaker 2: it just has not come together. I don't think they
- 4:56Speaker 2: have the physicality on that side of the ball they
- 4:59Speaker 2: had last year when the when the Broncos went to Buffalo,
- 5:03Speaker 2: and you know, in the AFC, I certainly think Houston
- 5:08Speaker 2: has a tremendous defense, and you know in New England.
- 5:14Speaker 2: New England put on a masterclass in coverage last night.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I I know guys who've been quarterback coaches in the
- 5:21Speaker 2: league for twenty years who said they had a hard
- 5:24Speaker 2: time deciphering what the Patriots were in at the snap,
- 5:28Speaker 2: and that that's big time stuff. So I think this
- 5:33Speaker 2: matchup is favorable to the Broncos if if they just
- 5:37Speaker 2: handled their business. But you know, it's a it's a
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's a pressure situation, and you saw in Jacksonville yesterday
- 5:46Speaker 2: a sort of a better team lost to a better
- 5:51Speaker 2: quarterback because they didn't handle their business at home.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwald with us on a Monday afternoon. Jeff Lakewald
- 5:57Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I be Local sixty eight. Start with a job and
- 6:02Speaker 1: with a career. Jeff, we talked about the importance of
- 6:06Speaker 1: the run game for Denver against this Buffalo defense, but
- 6:11Speaker 1: also let's talk a little bit about aggressiveness, about pushing
- 6:15Speaker 1: the ball down the field against a Buffalo team that
- 6:19Speaker 1: look is as great as Denver's defense is. The Bills
- 6:22Speaker 1: will come in and score points because that's what you
- 6:24Speaker 1: do when you have got a quarterback like that. Bow
- 6:28Speaker 1: Nicks in a more aggressive sort of game plan coming
- 6:35Speaker 1: into this against the Bills. Number one, will Sean call
- 6:39Speaker 1: it that way? And number two, do you like bow
- 6:42Speaker 1: in that situation?
- 6:44Speaker 2: I like it if they sort of cook the your
- 6:46Speaker 2: dervs before the main dish. If you run the ball
- 6:50Speaker 2: early and you force McDermott to push a safety down
- 6:55Speaker 2: toward the line of scrimmage, then you be aggressive and
- 6:58Speaker 2: you're gonna win those matchups against this defense.
- 7:02Speaker 3: It's all.
- 7:02Speaker 2: If you let him play those safeties deep, Uh, it
- 7:05Speaker 2: will be a problem for bo Nicks and they won't
- 7:08Speaker 2: be able to be aggressive because it's it's just not
- 7:12Speaker 2: what he's He's already shown against the Chargers and the
- 7:17Speaker 2: Chiefs coming down the stretch.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Uh.
- 7:20Speaker 2: He will play to what's in front of him. You know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and and if you know. But that said, if dink
- 7:26Speaker 2: and dunk wins you the game, then dink and dunk
- 7:29Speaker 2: all day long and win the game. But I'm saying
- 7:32Speaker 2: to be aggressive just to prove you're gonna do it
- 7:35Speaker 2: does not make sense. If both safeties are off the ball,
- 7:39Speaker 2: you've got to get one of those safeties to come
- 7:42Speaker 2: down into the intermediate area, into the box and then
- 7:46Speaker 2: and then you can go for it.
- 7:48Speaker 4: All right, Jeff, Who's gonna have the most pressure coming
- 7:53Speaker 4: up on Sunday is Josh Allen does? Does the pressure
- 7:56Speaker 4: mount because of how many failed times and the playoff field?
- 8:00Speaker 4: But he keeps talking about is excluding three of his
- 8:03Speaker 4: you know guys that have been in the way or
- 8:05Speaker 4: is it going to be bone Nicks and the Broncos
- 8:07Speaker 4: because they've got the number one seed.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Well, certainly, And you always have a lot of pressure
- 8:11Speaker 2: when you got the one, because that's you know, the
- 8:14Speaker 2: opportunity is right there for you. And if you have
- 8:19Speaker 2: the one, you've spent an awful lot of time during
- 8:22Speaker 2: the season talking about how important.
- 8:24Speaker 3: The one is.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So I mean that that sort of brings a pressure
- 8:28Speaker 2: all its own. But you know, in the big, big picture,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I would say, and John Elway lived this life, there's
- 8:37Speaker 2: nothing worse in terms of you know, people giving people
- 8:43Speaker 2: you don't know, criticizing your work. There's probably nothing worse
- 8:48Speaker 2: than being one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL
- 8:50Speaker 2: and not having a Super Bowl ring. That's a that's
- 8:54Speaker 2: not a fun experience. And I've I've talked to Elway
- 8:58Speaker 2: a bunch. I've talked to Tons of I've talked to
- 9:00Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, talked to Dan Fouts. It's no fun
- 9:05Speaker 2: to be that guy. And it's really no fun in
- 9:08Speaker 2: this day and age of social media, and you know,
- 9:11Speaker 2: guys can all talk about I don't look at social
- 9:14Speaker 2: media and I don't do this, and I don't. All
- 9:16Speaker 2: your relatives do, all your friends do. Even when people
- 9:22Speaker 2: who know you don't want to talk about it, you
- 9:24Speaker 2: can tell they don't want to talk about it.
- 9:28Speaker 3: So it's not a fun thing.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So I would guess I would think Josh Allen feels
- 9:34Speaker 2: a certain amount of vocational pressure that comes with being
- 9:38Speaker 2: you know, if you don't win it this year, people
- 9:40Speaker 2: are talking about, well, you didn't win it in a
- 9:42Speaker 2: year when Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow weren't
- 9:47Speaker 2: in the playoff field, you know, and and you're gonna
- 9:50Speaker 2: have to to to sort of live in that lane
- 9:53Speaker 2: and that that's just not fun.
- 9:54Speaker 1: How much do you think that hand injury affected him yesterday?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Oh, I know they're not.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I would guess today was zero fun in the training
- 10:05Speaker 2: room for Josh Allen. I mean they McDermott sort of
- 10:08Speaker 2: admitted he's sore, and you know, a lot of generalities,
- 10:12Speaker 2: but there there is no way.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Uh, he had an awesome morning.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I've seen these guys on Mondays even when it goes well,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and it's been a long time since I saw a
- 10:23Speaker 2: guy battered.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You know Herbert too.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I mean that those those guys were just battered yesterday,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and Josh Allen got enough done to get the win.
- 10:33Speaker 2: That was the diff I thought the knee, I thought
- 10:36Speaker 2: the leg injury would send him to the sideline. I
- 10:38Speaker 2: was really surprised when he when he came back from
- 10:41Speaker 2: that and that, and I think the headshot the concussion
- 10:45Speaker 2: check was probably a little more groggy than was sort
- 10:48Speaker 2: of discussed on the on the broadcast.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Any update.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Do you think they'll get Wattenberg back? I'd asked you
- 10:54Speaker 4: about that late in the season when they put him
- 10:55Speaker 4: on IR. You said you don't think the rules apply
- 10:58Speaker 4: to the playoffs where it has to be games and
- 11:00Speaker 4: all that anymore. So is it chance to get Wattenberg
- 11:03Speaker 4: back or did the signing of the center last week's
- 11:05Speaker 4: signal maybe they're not as optimistic about that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Well. I think the fact they got Mustafer and here
- 11:11Speaker 2: means they're they're at least preparing or they've got to
- 11:16Speaker 2: entertain an awful lot of the notion that he won't
- 11:19Speaker 2: be back again. I you know, Andy, until those guys
- 11:23Speaker 2: appear on the practice field, I wouldn't even categorize it
- 11:27Speaker 2: as close. So until I see him at least working
- 11:31Speaker 2: off to the side during practice, I'm not sure we're
- 11:37Speaker 2: even in the conversation of you know, getting right there
- 11:40Speaker 2: to get back yet. But again, I you know, it's
- 11:43Speaker 2: been a few days since we'll be out there. We'll
- 11:45Speaker 2: see what's up. What's up this week?
- 11:48Speaker 4: Hey, I got a horse play question, as he would
- 11:50Speaker 4: call it. Do you have anything serious and to know
- 11:52Speaker 4: how to signal it to you?
- 11:53Speaker 1: And a little horse hockey?
- 11:55Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, we gotta have a little horse play with
- 11:56Speaker 4: Jeff before we let him go.
- 11:57Speaker 3: But I don't want to do it till you're done with.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Your serious Let's play horse all right? So you talked
- 12:03Speaker 4: to Dan Founts, I mean, I don't know. I think
- 12:05Speaker 4: we played this for you. Did he give you one
- 12:06Speaker 4: of these goodbyes like we got the last time we
- 12:09Speaker 4: talked to him.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Thanks for having me on guys, and good luck he did?
- 12:12Speaker 4: He Good lucky Jeff, because the good luck feels like
- 12:15Speaker 4: we ain't never talking again. You get a good luck
- 12:17Speaker 4: after mister Founts, or do you ask me saying goodbye you?
- 12:21Speaker 2: I didn't get a good luck. I get, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 2: and he's not alone with this. Sometimes I ask questions
- 12:27Speaker 2: and I get I get a little bit of a
- 12:28Speaker 2: face scrunch.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, leg, I'm gonna go find some time
- 12:34Speaker 3: and all.
- 12:35Speaker 4: And then, uh, you told me about an all timer.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I wish you could tell everybody in the break the
- 12:38Speaker 4: other day that was an old timer. But yeah, we
- 12:41Speaker 4: you know what Founs is dead to us. Don't you
- 12:43Speaker 4: bring that name up on this show again.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Good luck me, pal.
- 12:48Speaker 2: He's a really I bet in his heyday I could
- 12:52Speaker 2: see him pushing back against some coaches. And he's told
- 12:56Speaker 2: me a few stories along the way that sort of
- 12:58Speaker 2: hinted at it. But I I have no doubt that
- 13:01Speaker 2: was one strong willed guy. And and Don Coriel probably
- 13:04Speaker 2: had some many back and forth along the way.
- 13:08Speaker 1: By the way, Jeff, speaking of getting scrunched up noses.
- 13:10Speaker 1: If the Broncos lose on Saturday, are you gonna uh
- 13:14Speaker 1: tell Sean Payton to keep his head up and that
- 13:15Speaker 1: the entire community is proud of him. Are you gonna
- 13:17Speaker 1: be that guy.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Uh that's not been my role in the past, but
- 13:22Speaker 2: uh I did, I will.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I will say.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You know, look, I get the whole journalism thing, but
- 13:31Speaker 2: that kind of stuff was said forty years ago, Uh,
- 13:35Speaker 2: when I was in some you know, group sessions and
- 13:39Speaker 2: all of this that this isn't a new idea. That
- 13:42Speaker 2: we have plenty of people locally who do the compliment
- 13:46Speaker 2: before question technique.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Uh So this isn't a new thing. It's not a
- 13:51Speaker 3: new argument, and it can be no one.
- 13:56Speaker 2: There's a lot of there's there's a lot of ways
- 13:59Speaker 2: to do things. But to act like this, to act
- 14:02Speaker 2: like this is a new thing is I think.
- 14:04Speaker 4: People just sounds like a sweet cowl. But here's what
- 14:07Speaker 4: I'd like the sweet gal. She's got a little voice
- 14:10Speaker 4: of reminds me of Grandma a little bit. But I want,
- 14:13Speaker 4: we want you to do something like that to show
- 14:15Speaker 4: let's just see, let's just see if he survives the experience,
- 14:19Speaker 4: because I think he dropped out of a heart attack
- 14:20Speaker 4: if you gave him one of them.
- 14:21Speaker 1: What about this, Jeff, if you ever pulled if you
- 14:24Speaker 1: ever pulled him aside for a quick conversation, Uh, just
- 14:28Speaker 1: try putting your arm around him and see how it goes.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Just just try one of those for us. Let us know.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I think people if I put my arm around somebody,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I think people would think I was trying to wrestle,
- 14:39Speaker 2: like going for the headlock or something.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I think, that's what's this guy doing to me right now?
- 14:43Speaker 1: What did you got?
- 14:44Speaker 4: Halfway through the compliment? Would he cuts you off me like, no, no, no, Jeff.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Jeff, Jeff, Jeff. There's no way.
- 14:52Speaker 1: He'd want to function in that world where you two
- 14:54Speaker 1: were like that is there.
- 14:55Speaker 3: There's no way, I think.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think, well, even even yesterday, you know, Leam Cohen
- 15:01Speaker 2: is saying thank you a bunch of times. I don't
- 15:05Speaker 2: know many coaches who, no matter what the sentiment of
- 15:09Speaker 2: that is, would would really hear it in that moment there.
- 15:14Speaker 2: They're not ready to be told it's okay.
- 15:17Speaker 1: They're just pissed.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Green, Yeah job, we lost by fifty. You know.
- 15:24Speaker 2: No, I just don't know in that space, I'm not Look,
- 15:27Speaker 2: you know, everybody's got to do it how they think
- 15:32Speaker 2: is best. But I think in that moment, I'm not
- 15:36Speaker 2: sure coaches hear many of those words in that moment.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Yours Sean's joker, just know that every Batman's gonna have
- 15:44Speaker 4: a joker, and in his world, you're the joker. So
- 15:47Speaker 4: I'll be get all friendly.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Now I'm a I'm all lurking, That's the thing, you know.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I don't.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I don't always you know, jump up out of the water,
- 15:57Speaker 2: but uh, you know I'm always there.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Are you the Penguin? Are you the Riddler?
- 16:02Speaker 4: What of the cavalcade of Batman bad guys? Do you
- 16:05Speaker 4: see yourself as mister Freeze?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Who else is in the damn.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Movie I used to doin?
- 16:11Speaker 3: Are you bane? Yeah? I don't know.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Man, What are you talking like? Old school Adam West Batman?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Or the Caesar Amero.
- 16:23Speaker 4: We can't go too far, Michael Keaton, that's his.
- 16:26Speaker 3: That's as far back as we go.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You know, Burgess Meredith Penguin for you right now? Rock
- 16:34Speaker 1: all right, Jeff Lgwald, we're goofing around. We appreciate it, man.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Thank you, Happy fellas. All right.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwald is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 16:42Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers ib e W Local sixty eight. Start
- 16:46Speaker 1: with a job, you end with a career.
