- 0:00Speaker 1: Democracy is a delicate and fragile thing, and yesterday's protest
- 0:04Speaker 1: was a good example of it. Working people oppose something,
- 0:07Speaker 1: they protest peacefully, respectfully, they present a petition, they go home.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The bill by the way that they don't like, well,
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's not becoming law. You don't have to look far
- 0:17Speaker 1: this morning for examples of things going tits up in
- 0:20Speaker 1: a big way. And quickly we've basically farewell freedom in
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hong Kong, forty seven activist sentence to long term prisons, sentences, overnights,
- 0:28Speaker 1: kids in the West Bank being killed. You've got a
- 0:30Speaker 1: tyrant and putin lowering the bar for the use of
- 0:33Speaker 1: nuclear weapons. Plus you've got US made long range missiles
- 0:36Speaker 1: into Russia. But here we have a functioning democracy. Now

- 0:46Speaker 1: He wants a separate Maldi parliament. He wants two systems,
- 0:50Speaker 1: he references on his website, the Irish, Welsh and Scottish systems,
- 0:54Speaker 1: the latter of which controls its own justice, education, tax systems.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How would that work here? Who would fund such a parliament?
- 1:05Speaker 1: Who would fall under the Maori parliament? Given seventy five
- 1:08Speaker 1: percent of Mary didn't vote for at Arbiti's lot at
- 1:11Speaker 1: the last election. How would you build a nation within
- 1:14Speaker 1: a nation separated not by borders but ethnicity. Sarah's question.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You see, democracy works when we're all in it, and
- 1:24Speaker 1: we're all in it equally. It's true that not every
- 1:26Speaker 1: group will get the same outcomes from that system, but
- 1:29Speaker 1: that's no reason to throw the system away entirely. What
- 1:33Speaker 1: it is sure is a call to better use that
- 1:35Speaker 1: system to affect change through strong and pragmatic leadership, the
- 1:40Speaker 1: likes of which taparty Marti has been known for in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the past. Whether you'll get that leadership from Debi and Waititetti, Well,
- 1:50Speaker 1: we have to wait and see. For more from early
- 1:53Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to News Talks it'd
