- 0:00Welcome back to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast. Every single episode,
- 0:03I strive to give you simple and sustainable things that you can do so that you have better health.
- 0:10Health, whether or not you have Hashimoto's, and obviously, since you're listening
- 0:14to this, you probably have Hashimoto's or somebody that you love has Hashimoto's.
- 0:19Today, I wanna talk about the absolute foundations of health because we all need that.
- 0:25And I touched on it in the last episode about what we have learned from COVID,
- 0:29and I realized it's probably time to go through an episode about what are those foundations.
- 0:34And so that's what we're going to cover. And again, like always,
- 0:37I will give you simple and sustainable things that you can do,
- 0:40because if it's not simple, you're probably not going to do it and you're not going to sustain it.
- 0:45And then if it's not sustainable, then it doesn't really matter that you tried,
- 0:49right? So welcome to the podcast.
- 0:52I am Esther. I am a registered nurse. I'm a holistic health educator.
- 0:55I absolutely love what I do. I love helping people figure out how they can take
- 1:02control of their health.
- 1:03I was doing this when I was working up in Alaska in a teeny tiny medical center
- 1:09where we did everything from, the nurses did everything from dispatch ambulances
- 1:13to take x-rays to run the clinic and the emergency department and the outpatient.
- 1:18Place, all with one person, or maybe two. During clinic hours, we had two nurses.
- 1:23Otherwise, you know, it was just one person doing all of those roles.
- 1:27It was phenomenally wild.
- 1:29And then when I was working in the emergency department all throughout the United
- 1:33States, again, I loved helping people take control of their health.
- 1:38Of course, in the emergency department, we're there to save lives.
- 1:40And I love that part too, like helping somebody not die. That was so incredible.
- 1:45What a gift to be able to give to somebody, like literally saving their life,
- 1:50standing by their bed, pushing medications, keeping them alive from one second
- 1:55to the next. It is, it's wild.
- 1:57And then now I also get to continue doing that and helping people kind of save
- 2:03their life, not in an emergent situation.
- 2:05I'm not telling you how to stay alive in the next 30 seconds.
- 2:08I'm not giving you medications.
- 2:09What I'm telling you are simple and sustainable things that you can do to cause
- 2:14a ripple effect and improve your health overall, and hopefully improve your
- 2:19lifespan, but also your health span.
- 2:21One researcher scientist that I heard, he said something along the lines of
- 2:27people are living too short and dying too long. And how powerful is that, right?
- 2:33We want to live healthy our whole lives. We don't want to have a very long end of life.
- 2:40So that's what I hope that you can implement from this episode.
- 2:44So following the logo, which is like a Venn diagram flower with five petals.
- 2:50It is my logo. I love it because, well, because I'm a nerd and I love Venn diagrams.
- 2:57And I thought when I was creating this company and this business,
- 3:01I thought what a perfect encapsulation of the whole you.
- 3:06Your health is made up of five areas. So I made a little flower out of a Venn diagram.
- 3:12It doesn't quite look like that anymore. Now it's got a little butterfly in it.
- 3:15But anyway, those five petals are body, mind, spirit, diet, and environment.
- 3:21I'm going to give you one simple thing for each of those five areas.
- 3:25And you can choose right now, are you going to implement one thing or multiple things?
- 3:30Now, overall, I want you to keep it simple and sustainable.
- 3:34So if right now all you have like bandwidth for is one thing,
- 3:39then just implement one thing.
- 3:41If you feel like two or three of the things that I talk about are simple for
- 3:46you to do and maybe you're already doing them maybe they just need a little
- 3:49touch-up or something then maybe implement two or three but whatever you do
- 3:54choose your next steps based on what is going to be both simple and sustainable for you.
- 4:00Now let's talk about the foundations of health.
- 4:03The foundations of health are not fun. They're not sexy.
- 4:07They're not like marketable because they're just foundational.
- 4:11There are things that you do day in and day out. It's not a magic potion.
- 4:17It's not, you know, supplement.
- 4:18It's not something that people can sell you. It's the things that you do.
- 4:22And they're basic things like sleeping. Are you sleeping well?
- 4:26Are you drinking drinking enough water? Are you moving?
- 4:29These foundations are things that we just have to do.
- 4:33And when you're doing them, you are creating a foundation, just like I said, for better health.
- 4:40Everything builds on these. And if your foundation is not secure,
- 4:44then everything that you build on it is not going to be secure.
- 4:47I don't know if you grew up attending Sunday school and if you ever sang the
- 4:52song about the parable that Jesus told about the wise man built his house on
- 4:56the rock and then the foolish man built his house on the sand and then the rain
- 5:00came down on both of them and the house on the rock stood firm.
- 5:03The house on the sand went splat.
- 5:05Well, that's kind of like your health too. You want to build your health on
- 5:10firm foundations, on solid foundations.
- 5:13So let's talk about those five.
- 5:15First of all, we're going to start with the body and how can you build a foundation
- 5:19of health in that element of your body?
- 5:22The biggest one is to make sure you're moving. there
- 5:26is now push to call being
- 5:29sedentary like smoking was back in
- 5:32the you know 60s 70s and 80s we knew
- 5:36at least when i was growing up we knew that smoking was bad the messaging had
- 5:41gotten so that everybody knew that now it was just working on getting people
- 5:45to stop smoking and we made huge strides and now people are vaping and going
- 5:50backwards but set being sedentary is like that.
- 5:54It is just as damaging to your health, if not more, to be sedentary as it was to be a smoker. So...
- 6:02Get up and move. For you, I don't know how you want to incorporate that.
- 6:06If you have a sedentary job or if you just find that you're sedentary a lot,
- 6:10how can you incorporate more movement?
- 6:13Now, I'm not saying like go and work out 50 times a day, but what I am saying is maybe set an alarm.
- 6:19You can do those Pomodoro timers that have an alarm about every 25 minutes and
- 6:24it helps you get up and move for just five minutes and you get back to work.
- 6:28And actually you are more productive. productive, most people are more productive
- 6:31when they do that, because it gives their brain a break, it gets their blood
- 6:35flowing, and then things are working again.
- 6:37So something like that, maybe you're going to get up and move,
- 6:39maybe you're going to schedule in a walk during your lunch,
- 6:43or maybe you make it part of your routine that you go outside and exercise or
- 6:49take a walk after lunch, or I mean, after supper.
- 6:52Or maybe, you know, you work out in the morning, and then then you're going
- 6:56to take multiple short little walks around your house or up and down a flight
- 6:59of stairs or something just to get moving.
- 7:02So number one, body, let's move. Let's be less sedentary.
- 7:07Movement, gentle movement is a foundation of health.
- 7:10So the second category of the whole you is your mind.
- 7:14If you have been listening to this podcast for any length of time,
- 7:18you probably know what I am going to talk about for your mind, and that is stress.
- 7:23Stress is so so impactful for your health. And when you have a lot of stress,
- 7:27you have less health because stress impacts your immune system.
- 7:32It impacts your sleep, which then impacts your immune system.
- 7:34It impacts your blood sugar, which then impacts your immune system.
- 7:38And also blood sugar seems to impact cancer.
- 7:43There's so many things that are impacted by stress.
- 7:46So we want to mitigate stress. stress.
- 7:49So lowering it as much as we can, getting rid of what we can,
- 7:53reframing things so that they're not as stressful.
- 7:57One of my boys, I was getting after him today because it seems like every single
- 8:01thing that happens, you know, he spells a word wrong and immediately like he
- 8:06gets so stressed out and angry about it.
- 8:10And he's developing more of a victim mentality.
- 8:14I was It's like, this is not okay. We need to figure out how to go forward from
- 8:18here because we're not setting you up for success.
- 8:21So figure out stress. And I have a lot of episodes about stress.
- 8:25You can just search for stress or head back to the beginning.
- 8:28And I think it's episode seven and eight.
- 8:30I talk about stress and then there's, it's probably like every 10 episodes I talk about stress.
- 8:35All right. And then the third aspect of the whole you that we're trying to help
- 8:40build foundations of health is your spirit, body, mind, spirit. You are one.
- 8:46All of those things are, they're all related to each And when you have more
- 8:52or better spiritual health, you're going to have better physical health,
- 8:56you're going to have better mental health. They all go together.
- 8:59Now, if you are a religious person, like I am, I have a personal relationship
- 9:04with Jesus, and I hope you do too.
- 9:07If not, please let me know if you are interested in learning more,
- 9:10and I can tell you more. But if you're a religious person, then you know that
- 9:15prayer, talking to Jesus and listening, it is a huge thing in your life.
- 9:20And research shows that people who pray are healthier physically and mentally and spiritually.
- 9:28And then if you're not a religious person, then you can look at the spiritual
- 9:33health as the dividing between love and fear.
- 9:38And when you are living in fear, that is spiritual dishealth or ill health or
- 9:44whatever you want to call it.
- 9:45You are designed to live in love.
- 9:48Every single cell in your body does better when you are living in love.
- 9:56And I don't mean like you're feeling in love with somebody.
- 9:59I mean that love and fear are opposites. And when you are working in that love section.
- 10:05Everything works better. In fact, your cells are more open and can receive nutrients
- 10:10better just when you are living in love instead of fear.
- 10:14So that is spiritual health. And what is something super simple that you can do? How about a hug?
- 10:21I am not a hugger. And I say that maybe a hug as like maybe something that I should do.
- 10:28In fact, when I was having Hashimoto's flare up a while ago,
- 10:32I told my husband, I said, I will not seek out a hug. So I need you to help me.
- 10:39Because one thing that I would like to do for my health is I would like to have
- 10:44a 60 second hug every day. But I will forget.
- 10:48And even when I remember, I won't prioritize it. So will you help me with that?
- 10:52And he was very agreeable, because he wants to help me with my health.
- 10:56And And that's one way, it's like 60 seconds, literally 60 seconds and connection.
- 11:02And so of course, he was going to help me out in my health in that way.
- 11:05So is there somebody that you can hug?
- 11:07Or maybe if the hug is not the right thing for you, maybe you spend some more time in prayer.
- 11:12Either way, figure out a simple and sustainable thing that you can do to improve
- 11:16your spiritual health because it does improve your physical and your mental health.
- 11:20And then also it impacts your diet and your environment.
- 11:24When you make a change in any one of these areas, it really does impact the other four.
- 11:29It is just kind of blows your mind when you dig down deep and look at how everything is connected.
- 11:35So we talked about body, mind, and spirit. Let's talk about diet.
- 11:39But before we do, let me remind you, if you have not left a rating and review
- 11:43for the show, will you take a couple seconds and do that today?
- 11:46It means so much to me as somebody producing this podcast because other people
- 11:52find the podcast based on how much Apple and Spotify and whoever they think
- 11:59that this podcast is worthy of being shown to others.
- 12:03Now, of course, you could also find the podcast by searching for it and by word of mouth.
- 12:08Those are fantastic ways that people find it. But one simple thing that you
- 12:12can do is help the show get pushed up in the algorithms rhythms by leaving a rating and review.
- 12:17I would appreciate it so much if you do that and just scroll down in the podcast
- 12:23and you should be able to do that.
- 12:25All right, so talking about diet, there are so many things that you can do and
- 12:28there are so many complicated things that you can do.
- 12:31So let's talk about something that is super simple and that is maybe looking
- 12:36at how many colors you you eat?
- 12:39Can you add more colors each day to what you eat? And I do not mean Skittles and M&Ms.
- 12:45I am a big fan or used to be a big fan of candy.
- 12:49I don't really eat very much anymore, but that was always my go-to.
- 12:52If somebody said, eat more colors,
- 12:53I'd be like, okay, I can have some Skittles. No, they do not count.
- 12:57They are artificially colored. And even if they're naturally colored,
- 13:01they are not the colors that I'm talking about.
- 13:03I am talking about, let's get it away from beige and white foods.
- 13:07When you have a plate and it is all browns, beiges, and whites,
- 13:12that is not the most healthy plate.
- 13:14How can you incorporate more colors? How can you add more greens,
- 13:19more purples, more reds, more yellows?
- 13:21How can you increase your health by adding colors to your plate?
- 13:27Within the Holistic Hashimoto's course, one of the modules actually has a section
- 13:32about a colorful plate challenge.
- 13:34And I tell you in that PDF or in that module, like what the different colors
- 13:39are going to do for your health, what foods contain them, how to incorporate them.
- 13:44And then there's a fun little challenge of how can you increase the colors that you eat.
- 13:50That is within the the Holistic Hashimoto's course, that is the paid course.
- 13:54And as of right now, it is still on sale.
- 13:57I told you at the beginning of 2024 that I was offering a discount until 20
- 14:03people enrolled, and I have not had 20 people enroll yet.
- 14:06So if you hop over there right now, you will get that huge sale.
- 14:11I anticipate based on how numbers are going, as far as how many people are enrolling,
- 14:16I anticipate that it will be available through April, but I cannot guarantee
- 14:21that because of course it's based on how many people enroll.
- 14:24So head over there. The link will be down in the show notes,
- 14:28of course, and take advantage of that.
- 14:30The Holistic Hashimoto's course is going to take you by the hand and help you
- 14:34figure out exactly what to do for your root causes.
- 14:37It starts out with the free mini course that's available on the app,
- 14:41and that is Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 14:43So that that goes through like, why do you have Hashimoto's?
- 14:46Why do people get Hashimoto's? And why do you have Hashimoto's?
- 14:49And then what can you do about it?
- 14:51And then you can either just take that mini course and go implement,
- 14:56or you can say, okay, I really want to be led by the hand and I want to know exactly what to do.
- 15:01And then you enroll in the holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 15:05And I take you through exactly what to do. And it is a fantastic course that you can implement.
- 15:12So that you can improve your health with Hashimoto's. And like I said,
- 15:15one of the things we do in when we're talking about the diet is we talk about
- 15:19colorful foods, because it's something fairly simple.
- 15:22You can glance down at your plate and say, oh, I don't really have any colors,
- 15:26or, oh, I have only had, you know, one orange today, or I have only had corn,
- 15:33which is pretty much straight sugar.
- 15:35And so it's yellow, it's kind of, you know, not super colorful.
- 15:38When you're looking at your plate, it's going to blend into the browns and the whites and the beiges.
- 15:43So how can you add some color? That is a simple thing that you can do for your diet.
- 15:48And the more colorful foods that you add to your plate, you know,
- 15:52if you eat a big salad, you're not going to have as much room in your stomach for other things.
- 15:58Sometimes you create better habits by filling in and adding more things,
- 16:03and then those will naturally push out some of the less healthier things.
- 16:07And also, So maybe if you're working so hard to eat healthy,
- 16:11you're like, I really don't want to have a huge dessert because I just ate really healthy.
- 16:16And why would I want to? Or maybe you're like, I just ate really healthy,
- 16:20so I deserve a dessert. I don't know how it is in your brain.
- 16:23But either way, you can work on having more colors in your diet.
- 16:27That is one simple thing, and it's sustainable.
- 16:29All right, so that leads us to environment. We've gone through body,
- 16:32mind, spirit, diet, now environment.
- 16:35What is one simple thing you can do? you? Well, a simple thing that you can do.
- 16:38It creates a healthy environment for every single cell in your body and it is from the environment.
- 16:45It's water. What's your water like?
- 16:47Now, most people have chemicals in their water, whether their water is fluoride
- 16:53from, has fluoride from the city, if they're on city water or chlorine or something.
- 16:58Water is one area where we can do better.
- 17:02Most of us can do better. Maybe you just need to increase how much water you're
- 17:06drinking and maybe you're drinking tap water and that's all you can do right
- 17:10now. At least you're getting more water.
- 17:12And maybe for you, you're like, I am already drinking water and I can clean it up. You know what?
- 17:18I need to change the filter on my water filter.
- 17:21So maybe you're going to go do that as soon as you listen to this podcast.
- 17:24Or maybe right now you're like, oh, I am just multitasking in the kitchen.
- 17:28I'm going to take out that water pitcher or the filter on our fridge and change
- 17:31that right now as I listen.
- 17:33Maybe that's it for you. You're going to change the filter so that you have
- 17:36cleaner, fresher water that is healthier for you.
- 17:39Or maybe you have some sort of water filter in your cart on Amazon,
- 17:45or you have looked online and you're looking at reverse osmosis or a distilled
- 17:50water system or something like that.
- 17:52If you're doing either of those, they give you phenomenal water,
- 17:56like it cleans it out, but then you do need to add the minerals back in.
- 18:00So make Make sure that you are looking at how to get your minerals.
- 18:03Because if you strip the water of all of the minerals, then...
- 18:07It can actually just go right through you instead of into you.
- 18:10Water follows minerals into your cells. So you have to have enough minerals.
- 18:16And naturally, there are minerals in our water.
- 18:20So make sure that you are drinking clean water and getting enough minerals.
- 18:24But just make sure you're getting enough water. That is one simple thing you
- 18:27can do. And it is absolutely sustainable.
- 18:30And if you forget one day, like if you don't hit your goal, it's an easy one
- 18:34to put back tomorrow because it makes such a difference.
- 18:38Did you know that when you're even a tiny bit dehydrated, like you don't even
- 18:42feel dehydrated yet, it causes more brain fog and it causes like mood problems?
- 18:47Did you know that? Water makes such a difference for everything,
- 18:51mind, body, spirit, everything.
- 18:54Those are five simple things that you can do today to improve your health and
- 18:59to build better better foundations for a healthier tomorrow, a healthier future.
- 19:04And again, body, it was to move.
- 19:07Mind, I said lower stress, but I never told you the simple thing. It was laugh.
- 19:11When you switch into laughter, it automatically lowers your stress.
- 19:15So find something to laugh at today. Share a funny gif, a funny meme,
- 19:20something, a joke, just get into laughter with somebody ideally.
- 19:24Ideally. So that was the second one, mind.
- 19:26Three was spirit. Find somebody to hug.
- 19:29Four, diet. Add some more colors. Five, environment.
- 19:33Work on more or enough clean water.
- 19:36Thank you so much for listening and being part of this community, the podcast.
- 19:42I really appreciate you for downloading this episode and for listening.
- 19:46And again, thank you in advance for leaving a rating and review.
- 19:50You. It really does mean a lot.
- 19:52I'll see you next week on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 19:55This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 19:59Please be sure to discuss any concerns and plans with your trusted healthcare professional.
