- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today we're talking about disappointments.
- 0:32Oh God, disappointments. How many times do you think you
- 0:36use that word in a day, in a week, in a month, in a year?
- 0:41Because it all happens we we find ourselves in a state of
- 0:47saying well or thinking we're disappointed.
- 0:51It was one of the things that I grew up with.
- 0:52My mother used to use that word a lot, especially when I would
- 0:57get in trouble for talking too much in class and she'd say, I'm
- 0:59disappointed you're not paying attention.
- 1:02Wasn't that I wasn't paying attention.
- 1:03I just had lots of questions. But disappointed was a word.
- 1:08And I, I think there's a huge lesson in understanding
- 1:15disappointments when we are disappointed in ourselves, in
- 1:20others, you know, you know, the world, so to speak, we often
- 1:26have expectations that we're putting out there.
- 1:28And these expectations have attachments to them.
- 1:31And attachment really is the biggest struggle that we have
- 1:35when we get attached to something and we have this deep
- 1:41need to have something take place in order that we avoid
- 1:45that disappointment, we set ourselves up for failure.
- 1:49Because again, looking outside of yourself for things is the
- 1:54path to disappointment. Or my husband likes to use it in
- 1:58a different way. He'll say the road to
- 1:59disappointment is paved with missed expectations.
- 2:02And I couldn't agree more. That town of disappointment is
- 2:07such a a big town. And when we really think about
- 2:11it and how much time we spend headed there, we say, gosh, this
- 2:16is because I expected something that I shouldn't have expected.
- 2:20And managing expectations of yourself and recognizing where
- 2:26you put those expectations on yourself is important, but it's
- 2:30really about where you put them on other people.
- 2:33I put expectations on myself and I'm OK with that.
- 2:36But I'm, I'm not going to beat myself up either because that's
- 2:40not a way I don't, I don't subscribe to, you know, the
- 2:42beatings will continue until morale improves.
- 2:45The problem we have is when we put those expectations on other
- 2:48people who have no business making them, They, they, we
- 2:53can't force people to do it. We can't sit there and say to
- 2:56someone else, I have large expectations of you, and if you
- 3:01don't do what I tell you to do, I will be disappointed with you.
- 3:04And then I carry that disappointment around.
- 3:06And parents are really good at doing this with their kids.
- 3:11I can't tell you how many times in my life I heard that, but
- 3:15that's not a way to lead. And it's not always a good thing
- 3:18to put on a child because then the child understands that they
- 3:23have to live to make other people happy.
- 3:26And that's not what we want. We don't want to make other
- 3:29people feel like our their their role is your just to make
- 3:33another person happy. And this your role is to focus
- 3:38on yourself and choose to be happy no matter what is going on
- 3:42around you. I've said that before, I think I
- 3:44said it yesterday, but our big focus in this is really
- 3:51acknowledging that we are not going to put disappointment out
- 3:56there so quickly. Instead of having that, when
- 4:01disappointment shows up, you have to ask yourself, what is
- 4:04this trying to teach me? Because it will show up and it's
- 4:07here to give you some information.
- 4:09So if I'm disappointed in something, like for instance, I
- 4:12was completely disappointed in a big portion of my garden this
- 4:16year, it was trying to teach me something.
- 4:19It was trying to teach me that I really need to pay attention to
- 4:23the types of seeds that I buy because I live in a space where
- 4:27it is hot. It, it is like hell hot here.
- 4:30And some of the seeds that I chose, even though they were
- 4:34awesome and wonderful and sound so exciting, they were not ideal
- 4:37for growing where I live. They were just not ideal.
- 4:40So I needed to make a better choice.
- 4:42If I had made better choices, they would have been absolutely
- 4:45able to thrive. But I didn't make better
- 4:47choices. So rather than being just in a
- 4:50state of disappointment and not doing anything about it, I have
- 4:53to recognize I need to make better choices.
- 4:56When I make better choices, I'll have better outcomes.
- 4:58And I can immediately shift my mindset in that moment when I
- 5:03can get excited and say, OK, now I get it.
- 5:05I can shift this. I don't have to be upset about
- 5:08this easily. I can write down all my lessons
- 5:11and let me tell you, I do. Pulled out a notebook, wrote
- 5:14down. Here's what worked, here's what
- 5:16could have been better. Here's how I can close the gap
- 5:19all the right from my flower garden as well.
- 5:21You know, lots of flowers that didn't do well.
- 5:25Disappointed. Yes.
- 5:26Whose fault was it? It was my fault.
- 5:28Wasn't the seeds fault, wasn't the weather's fault.
- 5:30I could complain and say yeah, we had 21 days straight of rain,
- 5:33things drowned. OK, nothing was going to help
- 5:36with that. But I'm not going to be mad at
- 5:38Mother Nature. I'm not going to walk around and
- 5:40and be completely disappointed with mother, Mother Nature over
- 5:44it. That's useless.
- 5:46That's not going to help me get anywhere.
- 5:48So watch the language around disappointment, look at what's
- 5:53disappointing you, make decisions about it and don't
- 5:56allow it to rule your world and make those choices to put it
- 6:00aside and say, I refuse to keep driving to the town of
- 6:03disappointment every day with my missed expectations that I put
- 6:06out there in the world because it's foolish and it doesn't help
- 6:08me. So shift that in yourself and
- 6:11watch yourself go to a whole new level of peace.
- 6:16I hope you guys have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
