- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Gator Football. This is
- 0:02Speaker 1: Allie Peak. I want to talk to you about the
- 0:06Speaker 1: biggest test of John Summerall's tenure so far. This video
- 0:10Speaker 1: is brought to you by PrizePix. Don't forget, download the app.
- 0:14Speaker 1: New users can play a $ 5 lineup. Use our code.
- 0:16Speaker 1: It's HMA. And if you win, you'll get $ 150 in
- 0:18Speaker 1: lineups instantly. There are bigger games on the schedule left
- 0:24Speaker 1: than South Carolina. Texas will be bigger. Definitely nationally. Georgia
- 0:29Speaker 1: is always going to be Georgia. But I think this
- 0:31Speaker 1: week tells us more about Coach Summerall's Florida program than
- 0:35Speaker 1: any of those bigger games that are left. This is
- 0:38Speaker 1: the first time his team has really been forced to
- 0:40Speaker 1: answer a hard question. Not, can you win a big game?
- 0:44Speaker 1: We already saw that. Not, can you handle the hype? Well,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we also saw how that went too. They're still figuring
- 0:49Speaker 1: it out. But I think the question now is, what
- 0:53Speaker 1: does a John Summerall football team look like after it
- 0:55Speaker 1: gets embarrassed? That's what I want to see this week.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Florida didn't just lose to Missouri. They got outplayed. They
- 1:02Speaker 1: got outcoached in the trenches. They got pushed around. They
- 1:04Speaker 1: made mistakes. They lost composure at times. And for a
- 1:08Speaker 1: team that has spent the first month building an identity
- 1:11Speaker 1: around toughness and discipline and physicality, Missouri challenged every single
- 1:16Speaker 1: part of that identity. So now, in my opinion, comes
- 1:20Speaker 1: the biggest test of the John Summerall era so far.
- 1:23Speaker 1: How does this team respond? We talk about culture all
- 1:28Speaker 1: the time in college football. We usually talk about it
- 1:30Speaker 1: after wins. The locker room looks great. Everybody's bought in.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Players love the coach. The energy is just different. Practices
- 1:37Speaker 1: are harder. The standard is higher. I'm pretty sure all
- 1:41Speaker 1: of those things have come out of my mouth since,
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know, last January. And all of that sounds great
- 1:46Speaker 1: when you're 4-0. But culture doesn't really get tested when
- 1:49Speaker 1: everything is going well. Culture gets tested when people start
- 1:52Speaker 1: pointing fingers. when players are frustrated, when coaches get criticized,
- 1:56Speaker 1: when fans are angry, when the national media stops telling
- 2:00Speaker 1: you how good you are, that is when you find
- 2:02Speaker 1: out what you actually built. And that is why this
- 2:05Speaker 1: week matters so much for John Summerall. One of the
- 2:08Speaker 1: biggest things he has preached since he got the job
- 2:10Speaker 1: at Florida is accountability. Do your job. Play physical. Play disciplined.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Be player-led. Don't let outside noise affect how you prepare.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Missouri put all of that to the test. and Florida
- 2:23Speaker 1: failed the test. Now we find out whether it was
- 2:26Speaker 1: a temporary failure or it was something deeper. Summerall has
- 2:31Speaker 1: talked about player leadership, and that's one of the things
- 2:34Speaker 1: I keep coming back to. John Summerall has said more
- 2:37Speaker 1: than once that the difference between good teams and great
- 2:39Speaker 1: teams is player leadership. And I think that's exactly what
- 2:42Speaker 1: we need to watch now. Leadership is easy when you're celebrating.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It's easy when everybody is smiling. It's easy when you
- 2:49Speaker 1: beat a top five team in the swamp and the
- 2:50Speaker 1: crowd is losing its mind. Leadership looks different after Missouri.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Who walks into the building Monday and takes ownership? Who says,
- 2:59Speaker 1: that wasn't us? Who pulls a teammate aside after a
- 3:03Speaker 1: bad rep at practice? Who makes sure the energy is right?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Who refuses to let one bad snap turn into two
- 3:10Speaker 1: bad snaps and three bad snaps and then one bad
- 3:13Speaker 1: Saturday turning into two bad Saturdays or three bad Saturdays?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Coaches can stream. Coaches can change drills. Coaches can make
- 3:21Speaker 1: practices harder. But eventually, if a football team is going
- 3:24Speaker 1: to be great, the locker room has to police itself.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And this is where Florida's veteran players have to show up.
- 3:31Speaker 1: This is where captains matter and where the older guys matter.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And this is where players who want to be remembered
- 3:37Speaker 1: as the group that helped change Florida football have to
- 3:40Speaker 1: act like it. We're going to take a quick break
- 3:42Speaker 1: from this video to tell you about something exciting. We
- 3:45Speaker 1: are now available on audio platforms. You guys have been
- 3:49Speaker 1: messaging me, writing in the comments of videos. talking to
- 3:52Speaker 1: me when you've seen me out in public, asking for
- 3:54Speaker 1: an audio option. So we are available on Apple Podcasts
- 3:56Speaker 1: and Spotify now. Make sure you subscribe over there to those.
- 4:00Speaker 1: If there's a platform that you like to listen to
- 4:02Speaker 1: that we're not on, let me know down in the
- 4:03Speaker 1: comments and I'll do my best to get on there
- 4:05Speaker 1: as well. We want to bring you this content any
- 4:08Speaker 1: way that you want to consume it. So how does
- 4:12Speaker 1: Summerall handle his team this week? I am fascinated to
- 4:16Speaker 1: see how he handles it from a coaching standpoint. There's
- 4:19Speaker 1: a balance there. You can't act like Missouri didn't happen,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but you also can't spend five days emotionally beating your
- 4:25Speaker 1: team up over it. At some point, you have to
- 4:27Speaker 1: correct and then just move on. That is part of
- 4:30Speaker 1: being a head coach. What do you emphasize? What do
- 4:32Speaker 1: you change? How physical are practices? How much do you
- 4:35Speaker 1: challenge the offensive line? How much do you challenge the defense?
- 4:39Speaker 1: How much film do you show? How quickly do you
- 4:42Speaker 1: turn the page? Those things matter. Florida looked like a
- 4:45Speaker 1: team that lost confidence as Missouri took control of the game.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So Summerall's job this week isn't just fixing scheme. It's
- 4:52Speaker 1: getting his team's edge back. And by that, I don't
- 4:55Speaker 1: mean fake confidence. I mean getting back to the things
- 4:58Speaker 1: that made Florida good in the first place. Running the ball,
- 5:00Speaker 1: playing downhill, tackling, getting lined up, avoiding stupid penalties, winning
- 5:04Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage. Those aren't complicated things, but they
- 5:07Speaker 1: did get away from Florida this past week. If I'm
- 5:11Speaker 1: watching one group this week, it might be the offensive line.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Because what happened at Missouri was not acceptable. And I'm
- 5:17Speaker 1: not saying that to be dramatic. Florida's offensive line is
- 5:21Speaker 1: built around being able to control the line of scrimmage.
- 5:23Speaker 1: When they can run the football, everything works. When they can't,
- 5:27Speaker 1: this offense becomes much more difficult to operate. Aaron Filo
- 5:30Speaker 1: gets put in bad situations. Defenses can pressure more aggressively.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Play action becomes less effective. Third and long becomes too frequent.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And Florida loses the identity that carried them through the
- 5:40Speaker 1: first month. So this week is personal for that offensive line.
- 5:44Speaker 1: South Carolina is going to watch that Missouri film and
- 5:47Speaker 1: they're going to say, okay, we're going to test you too.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And they should. If I'm South Carolina, I'm attacking Florida
- 5:52Speaker 1: up front until they prove they can handle it. So
- 5:54Speaker 1: Florida's offensive line has a chance to answer a very
- 5:57Speaker 1: simple question. Was Missouri one bad day or was it
- 6:00Speaker 1: a blueprint? Same goes for the defense. One of the
- 6:03Speaker 1: things that bothered me most about Missouri was how little
- 6:06Speaker 1: changed once Missouri found success running the football. They hit
- 6:09Speaker 1: Florida with big plays. They hit them again and again
- 6:11Speaker 1: and again. And Florida never really looked like it found
- 6:14Speaker 1: an answer. That can't happen again, especially with the schedule
- 6:16Speaker 1: Florida has coming. South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, those teams are
- 6:21Speaker 1: going to test every weakness Missouri put on tape. So
- 6:24Speaker 1: I want to see whether Florida's defense responds schematically and mentally.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Can they fit the run better? Can they tackle better?
- 6:30Speaker 1: Can they adjust faster? Can they stop one bad drive
- 6:33Speaker 1: from becoming an entire bad half? That's a maturity issue too.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Good defenses give up plays. Great defenses recover. Florida did
- 6:41Speaker 1: not recover at Missouri. I don't think that Florida needs
- 6:46Speaker 1: Aaron Philo to be Superman this week, but I do
- 6:48Speaker 1: think his response matters too. Actually, maybe the absolute worst
- 6:52Speaker 1: thing for this week would be for him to try
- 6:54Speaker 1: to be Superman. He doesn't need to go into the
- 6:57Speaker 1: South Carolina game feeling like he has to make up
- 6:59Speaker 1: for Missouri. He doesn't need to force throws. He doesn't
- 7:01Speaker 1: need to chase explosives. He doesn't need to carry the offense.
- 7:04Speaker 1: What Florida needs is for Philo to settle back into
- 7:08Speaker 1: being the quarterback that we did see the first month. efficient, calm, accurate,
- 7:12Speaker 1: taking what the defense gives him, letting the run game
- 7:15Speaker 1: help him managing the game. I think that is an
- 7:18Speaker 1: important moment in his development too. Every young quarterback eventually
- 7:22Speaker 1: has a game where things go wrong. The ones who
- 7:25Speaker 1: become really good, they learn from it and then they
- 7:28Speaker 1: move on. So I want to see Philo play free again.
- 7:31Speaker 1: That starts with the guys around him. And that's why
- 7:35Speaker 1: South Carolina is more important than it looks. And I
- 7:38Speaker 1: know that there's a chance people are going to misunderstand
- 7:40Speaker 1: what I mean when I say that it's the biggest
- 7:42Speaker 1: test of the John Summerall era. I'm not saying South
- 7:44Speaker 1: Carolina is Florida's biggest opponent. I know that they're not.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm saying this game will tell us something about the
- 7:50Speaker 1: foundation of the program. If Florida comes out tight, flat, sloppy, undisciplined,
- 7:56Speaker 1: that tells you Missouri left a mark. If Florida comes
- 7:58Speaker 1: out angry, sharp, physical, focused, that tells us something too.
- 8:04Speaker 1: It tells us this team can absorb a punch. Nobody
- 8:07Speaker 1: goes through an SEC season untouched. Everybody gets beat up.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Everybody has a bad week. Everybody gets exposed at some point.
- 8:14Speaker 1: The difference between teams that compete for championships and teams
- 8:17Speaker 1: that fade is what happens next. One loss cannot become two.
- 8:21Speaker 1: This is the danger. Missouri cannot beat Florida twice. And
- 8:25Speaker 1: you can hear coaches say that all the time, but
- 8:27Speaker 1: it does apply here. If Florida spends the entire week
- 8:30Speaker 1: thinking about Missouri, then comes out pressing against South Carolina,
- 8:34Speaker 1: then Missouri beat them twice. If players start doubting themselves,
- 8:38Speaker 1: then Missouri beat them twice. If the offensive line becomes tentative,
- 8:42Speaker 1: then Missouri beats them twice. If the defense starts overthinking everything,
- 8:47Speaker 1: then Missouri beats them twice. That's what John Summerall has
- 8:50Speaker 1: to prevent. Learn from it, own it, fix it, then
- 8:53Speaker 1: bury it. And this is where John Summerall earns his money.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Everybody loved Coach Summerall a week ago. That's kind of
- 8:59Speaker 1: how college football works. Florida beats Ole Miss, jumps into
- 9:02Speaker 1: the top 10, and suddenly everybody wants to talk about
- 9:05Speaker 1: what a great hire Florida made. Then one week later,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you get embarrassed at Missouri. Now people want answers. It's
- 9:11Speaker 1: the job. And I actually think this is where we
- 9:13Speaker 1: get to learn more about Summerall than we did after
- 9:15Speaker 1: the Ole Miss win. Can you rally a locker room?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Can you correct without creating panic? Can you get your
- 9:20Speaker 1: best players to respond? Can you get a team that
- 9:23Speaker 1: just got embarrassed to play confidently again just seven days later?
- 9:26Speaker 1: That's coaching, not just drawing up plays, not just recruiting,
- 9:29Speaker 1: not just winning a press conference. This is the part
- 9:32Speaker 1: of the job that matters the most. So when I
- 9:35Speaker 1: say this is the biggest test of the John Summerall
- 9:39Speaker 1: era so far, I mean it. Not because South Carolina
- 9:43Speaker 1: is the biggest game, but because this is the first
- 9:45Speaker 1: time Florida has had to prove that the identity Summerall
- 9:48Speaker 1: is building can survive adversity. We know they can play
- 9:54Speaker 1: well when everything is going right. We know that they
- 9:56Speaker 1: can feed off the swab. We know that they can
- 9:58Speaker 1: beat a really good team Now I want to know
- 10:00Speaker 1: whether they can get embarrassed, take criticism all week long,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and come back better. That's what good programs do. That's
- 10:07Speaker 1: what mature teams do. And ultimately, that's what John Summerall
- 10:10Speaker 1: has been telling us he wants this program to become.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Saturday is the first real chance to prove it. Missouri happened.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Can't change it. But Florida still gets to decide what
- 10:19Speaker 1: Missouri means. Was it the beginning of something falling apart?
- 10:23Speaker 1: Or was it the moment this team learned what it
- 10:25Speaker 1: takes to respond? That answer starts this week. And I
- 10:30Speaker 1: am really interested to see how this team handles it
- 10:34Speaker 1: moving forward. We appreciate you guys tuning in. Also, a
- 10:37Speaker 1: big thank you over at PrizePix. Don't forget, download the app.
- 10:40Speaker 1: New users can play a $ 5 lineup and use our code.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It's HMA right down there on the screen. And if
- 10:45Speaker 1: you win, you get $ 150 in lineups instantly. I appreciate
- 10:48Speaker 1: you guys. And as always, go Gators.
