- 0:25Hello and welcome to Talking FACS.
- 0:27What you need to know about family food,
- 0:29finance and fitness.
- 0:31I am your host,
- 0:32Mindy McCulley,
- 0:34Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Specialist for instructional support at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:40We are celebrating Financial Literacy Month and so this month,
- 0:45we are really focusing on topics that are related to your finances.
- 0:51My guest today is Kelly May Extension Associate for family finance and resource management.
- 0:57Welcome,
- 0:57Kelly.
- 0:59Hi,
- 0:59Mindy.
- 0:59Thanks for having me.
- 1:01We are going to talk about a fun topic today and it's a topic that I don't know if you watch Jeopardy,
- 1:08but I watch Jeopardy and all three of the Jeopardy contestants did not know the answer answer to the question when asked about compound interest.
- 1:21So hopefully,
- 1:23if they're listening today,
- 1:25they're gonna learn something that you're going to tell them about how to put compound interest to work for them.
- 1:32That's the goal.
- 1:33We,
- 1:34we want your money to work for you and so that you can make more from the money you already have.
- 1:39So let's just explain to our listeners and to any jeopardy contestants who might be listening,
- 1:45what is compound interest?
- 1:49When your interest is compounded,
- 1:51you earn profit on the money you save as well as the interest you've already earned.
- 1:55So there is simple interest and compound interest and simple interest only earns profit on the principal and the principal is the money that you save.
- 2:05So if you put money in your account and it only has simple interest,
- 2:10you will earn interest on the money you put in the account.
- 2:14But if you have compound interest,
- 2:16it's even better because it will earn money on the money you put in and on any interest that you earn.
- 2:22So you're actually earning money on the money you've earned.
- 2:26So compound interest helps your money grow faster over time.
- 2:31And the more often it's compounded,
- 2:33the greater your benefits will be.
- 2:36So we can be really simple and say if you put $100 in and you earn $10 in interest and your interest is compounded,
- 2:47then the next time you earn interest,
- 2:49you're gonna earn interest on 100 and $10 instead of $100.
- 2:54Right.
- 2:55That's right.
- 2:55That's right.
- 2:56So you're always going to earn more interest with compound interest,
- 3:02then you will earn with simple interest.
- 3:05That's right.
- 3:06And the more often it's compounded,
- 3:08the more you will earn and the higher the interest rate,
- 3:11the more you will earn.
- 3:13That's a really great point.
- 3:15Some people don't realize that if uh,
- 3:17interest is compounded monthly or daily or yearly,
- 3:22it's going to impact how much money they earn.
- 3:24Right.
- 3:25That's right.
- 3:26So the more often that it happens,
- 3:28the more benefit you'll receive.
- 3:31How does this work for you or against you?
- 3:35Oh,
- 3:35that is a good question because we're talking about saving and of course,
- 3:39if you're saving it works for you.
- 3:42But where else do we find interest in our lives?
- 3:45So,
- 3:45if we are paying interest,
- 3:48right,
- 3:49if we're borrowing so on our credit products,
- 3:53we,
- 3:53we have interest on those as well.
- 3:55And um,
- 3:56guess what,
- 3:57sometimes those compound too.
- 3:59So compound interest works both ways.
- 4:01If you're saving that's money you earn.
- 4:03But of course,
- 4:04if you are borrowing that's money that you pay.
- 4:07So pay attention to your rates on all your banking and finance products,
- 4:12um,
- 4:12because you know,
- 4:13you're likely paying interest on the,
- 4:15the loans and the credit cards and the,
- 4:18the money you borrow.
- 4:19And if that money is,
- 4:21um,
- 4:21compound interest as well,
- 4:23of course,
- 4:23your debt will build faster.
- 4:25So compound interest works for you on savings,
- 4:28but it can work against you on your credit.
- 4:31Isn't that why you're gonna see sometimes that your interest rate and your apr might be different,
- 4:38right.
- 4:38Well,
- 4:38the APR includes the effects of compounding.
- 4:42So if you're going to compare two accounts and you want to know which one is the better deal for you,
- 4:47look at the APR rate on both the annual percentage rate and that will show the effects of the compounding.
- 4:54So that's right.
- 4:56Very good.
- 4:58So we always want to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges and make sure that we are comparing the right rates and not just that what we think might be the,
- 5:11the interest rate,
- 5:12um,
- 5:13that we are paying on a loan product as you said,
- 5:17right?
- 5:18So how do we find out what our interest rate is?
- 5:22You could,
- 5:23um,
- 5:23check your paperwork or talk with somebody from your financial institution to see what kind of products they offer.
- 5:29Of course,
- 5:30you don't have to stay in the same account you've always been in.
- 5:34You,
- 5:34you do have the option to shop around and change.
- 5:37We can compare different products and like you said,
- 5:40use the APR see what that interest is and how often it compounds.
- 5:45Uh,
- 5:45maybe you can switch from an account that only compounds once a year to one that compounds every month or every day.
- 5:51The rates have gone up.
- 5:53I don't know if you've noticed,
- 5:54but the,
- 5:56the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee has raised the federal funds rate multiple times.
- 6:01In fact,
- 6:02during the last year,
- 6:03during 2022 they raised the rate seven times to combat inflation.
- 6:08Um and to help with,
- 6:09with the pandemic's effect on the economy.
- 6:11So things have been changing and right now rates are higher,
- 6:15your regular savings account rates um are still fairly low though.
- 6:20So check your rates at your,
- 6:22at your bank or your credit union and see what kind of interest rate you're getting and maybe check out a high yield account.
- 6:29If you have some money saved,
- 6:31you may be able to switch to a different kind of account,
- 6:34high yield accounts,
- 6:35earn a little bit more interest for your money.
- 6:39And of course,
- 6:39you have to check the terms you want to know what the rules are.
- 6:42So you can play by the rules,
- 6:44see what the fees are.
- 6:45And if there's a,
- 6:46a minimum amount you have to put in and how long you have to keep that money in there.
- 6:51And if you have CD certificates of deposit,
- 6:55check the rates on those too,
- 6:56because if they have rolled over over time,
- 6:59they may roll over at the old lower rate and a lot of places have specials right now.
- 7:05So it might be worth it to cash it out,
- 7:07pay the penalty and get it in there at that higher rate if there is one available.
- 7:11So it's worth asking,
- 7:13you know,
- 7:13just check and see,
- 7:14see what the options are.
- 7:16Kelly,
- 7:16is there a simple math formula to figure out what the interest rate?
- 7:20Is that you're paying or that you're earning.
- 7:23So there are lots of financial calculators online and I would recommend that you check a few.
- 7:30So don't just check the first one you go to because they're not all the same.
- 7:34I would check at least three.
- 7:35So find a few websites and type your information in and see what you come up with.
- 7:40And if you come up with three,
- 7:41they're about the same,
- 7:42then,
- 7:42you know,
- 7:43that's a good idea of what your money might earn.
- 7:46So that's,
- 7:46that's probably the easiest way to find out.
- 7:49This is fascinating information for me because I'm a numbers girl and I love to play with these things.
- 7:55But for those people who don't like the numbers,
- 7:59we have these resources available and you can just plug your information in and figure out where you're going.
- 8:05It's all fun and it's all good when you're on the earnings side and when you're on the paying side,
- 8:10then you want to make sure that you are paying as little as possible.
- 8:14Right?
- 8:15That's right.
- 8:16Kelly.
- 8:17Thanks so much for joining me for this conversation and of course,
- 8:20we are celebrating financial literacy month this month.
