- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy. Each day this.
- 0:14Is for those who seek to make life truly meaningful.
- 0:17Get ready for impact. Hi team, welcome to the show.
- 0:23In this episode today I actually want to tackle a few big myths
- 0:27that people have about themselves, about life, about
- 0:30gross. These are things that I run into
- 0:34a lot when working with clients. And I think if you are going to
- 0:37have the impact that you want to have in your life or other
- 0:39people's lives, it's very necessary to debunk these myths
- 0:45in particular. These are all going to be this
- 0:48around mindset, around personal growth and around change.
- 0:52There's a lot happening in this world right now where people are
- 0:55getting very worked up, where they are searching for a
- 0:58different way of doing things. A lot of issues are coming up,
- 1:01low self esteem, low self-confidence, self doubt, and
- 1:05people are just not feeling motivated.
- 1:07They're not feeling inspired, they're burned out, they're
- 1:10fatigued. I want to change the course of
- 1:13that. I think that we have the power
- 1:15to change the course of this energy in this direction that
- 1:18people are sort of falling into the flow of without necessarily
- 1:23choosing it. And as part of that, we need to
- 1:25have conversations about what's possible.
- 1:27People have a lot of resistance around things that are possible
- 1:31for themselves when it comes to their ability to change their
- 1:34life. And so in an effort to Shuck
- 1:38some of those old beliefs and change the stories and maybe
- 1:40empower you a little bit more, let's dive into four key ideas
- 1:46that people buy into that I don't necessarily think are that
- 1:49helpful. 4 big myths that people hold onto.
- 1:52The first myth is I can't change.
- 1:55This often shows up in people when they say things like, oh, I
- 1:58was Born This Way. Oh, I'm wired this way.
- 2:00This is the way I am. And they believe that they are
- 2:04incapable of change or the people around them believe that
- 2:08they are incapable of change and therefore that belief has been
- 2:10transferred to them. And here's the thing, it's not
- 2:14true. You absolutely are capable of
- 2:17change. It happens all the damn time.
- 2:19This is not a phenomenon. In fact, it can happen very,
- 2:23very quickly. You are a capable, whole,
- 2:27resilient being who was born perfect.
- 2:31You've just accumulated experiences and stories along
- 2:33the way. And it's true.
- 2:36These are what have shaped your perspectives and your behaviors
- 2:40and your patterns, yes, but it does not mean that they are
- 2:44written in genetic stone. What so often happens as a
- 2:49result of all these experiences that we have in life is we start
- 2:51to look at things through different lenses.
- 2:54You know, all the filters that you have access to on Instagram.
- 2:57I kind of think about it like that We have filters that we
- 3:01place over events that happen in our lives and it shapes how we
- 3:04respond or how we think or how we feel about them.
- 3:08They can influence the way that we think about our bodies, our
- 3:11relationships, our finances, our opportunities, all of it.
- 3:16And when you remove the filter, things look different.
- 3:20Imagine putting one of those crazy filters where it's chops
- 3:23up the screen into like 8 different sections on Instagram
- 3:26and you're looking at the world through that filter.
- 3:29How messed up is that? That's what people are doing.
- 3:32They are putting these filters over their eyes, over their
- 3:35minds and they're looking at their experiences through that
- 3:38and they're it's like being in a fun house.
- 3:40But when you remove the filter, things look different.
- 3:44You often hear people describe this process as sort of an
- 3:47awakening. They wake up to things and
- 3:50that's what happens when people go through any process of self
- 3:54development or personal growth, whether it's through coaching or
- 3:57therapy or what have you. Sometimes it's an event that
- 4:01changes someone's perspective and takes the filter off, like a
- 4:04near death experience or a health crisis.
- 4:07Maybe you've lost someone that you love and that changed your
- 4:10perspective on life. Maybe it's getting a second
- 4:13chance at something. Any of those moments, I call
- 4:17those shake you awake moments. But the point is, we are all
- 4:22capable of change. It comes from within us.
- 4:26It comes from changing the stories in the mind.
- 4:29No matter the impetus or the moment or the work that you've
- 4:33done, it is very possible to change the stories in our mind.
- 4:38We might not be able to change other people's stories as much
- 4:41as we try, but we can absolutely change ourselves.
- 4:45And so that's myth #1 I can't change.
- 4:47The second myth that people buy into so much is the belief that
- 4:51all my thoughts are true. All the things that go through
- 4:55my head are true, and that couldn't be further from the
- 4:59truth. If you really stopped to think
- 5:01about this logically, you would be able to debunk this myth on
- 5:05your own. But we kind of get in the habit
- 5:08of not being aware of the thoughts that go through our
- 5:11head. So we fall into the trap of
- 5:12believing that they're all coming from a truthful place.
- 5:16Here's the reality. Most of our thoughts are
- 5:18projections of past stored events.
- 5:21They're products of our stories, the things that we've
- 5:24experienced, the things that we've lived.
- 5:26And we cannot believe everything that our mind tells us.
- 5:30We've had a lot of conversations on this podcast about saboteurs.
- 5:34Saboteurs are the stories that we develop from lived
- 5:37experiences. Those guys are playing a huge
- 5:40role in your thoughts. And many of our stories were
- 5:44developed when we were young, between the ages of seven and 15
- 5:47years old. And during that time, we have
- 5:50underdeveloped brains, specifically prefrontal
- 5:53cortexes, massively underdeveloped and a total lack
- 5:57of context of the world. Imagine your view of the world
- 6:00when you were eight years old, how big everything looked.
- 6:04And then you might go back to visit your old childhood home
- 6:07when you lived there when you were eight years old.
- 6:09And you look around and you're like, man, this place is dinky.
- 6:11Everything's so small. My neighborhood's so small, my
- 6:13backyard's tiny. When you were eight, everything
- 6:16seemed huge and massive and scary and you had a total lack
- 6:19of context of the world. And now things look totally
- 6:22different. Do we want our old stories that
- 6:26we created when we were 8/12/16 years old to be dictating our
- 6:31lived experiences now? Hell no.
- 6:34I don't want my 14 year old self running the show.
- 6:36I remember how she thought. I remember those days, and that
- 6:41was a rough time middle school. So we have to challenge the
- 6:45beliefs that we have. We have to challenge the
- 6:47thoughts that are running through our minds because
- 6:49they're not all true. They're often very biased, and
- 6:52they're often rooted in stories that were created when we were
- 6:55lacking A tremendous amount of information.
- 6:57So that's myth #2 myth #3 is that you just have to think
- 7:03positively. And thankfully, this is sort of
- 7:07fallen out of favor, this toxic positivity culture.
- 7:10But I think sometimes people get this in their minds, especially
- 7:14when it comes to coaching, that it's all about just thinking
- 7:17positively. And that couldn't be further
- 7:20from reality. And here's why.
- 7:22When you think positively all the time, it probably feels
- 7:26pretty disingenuous. It probably feels pretty
- 7:29inauthentic. And when I noticed that people
- 7:33are in that constant positivity space, I noticed they have a
- 7:36frenetic kind of energy to them. They feel a little shaky, like,
- 7:41like if something happens, they might like fly apart or crumble
- 7:45at any moment. And I think that this is because
- 7:48people who are buying into this idea that you have to be
- 7:51positive all the time, they are ignoring the other side of the
- 7:56coin. They're ignoring and acting like
- 7:59negative emotions don't exist, that they're not allowed to feel
- 8:02them, and they don't want to experience any of those things.
- 8:06And that's inherently dishonest team.
- 8:09Our bodies actually know that that's not possible, that we are
- 8:12lying to ourselves thinking that we can just be positive all the
- 8:16time. It makes me think about when we
- 8:20moved into our house five years ago, we bought this home from an
- 8:25an elderly man who had done a lot of kind of weird repairs to
- 8:29the home. We didn't know this at the time,
- 8:32but there was a ton of dry rot in our primary bathroom.
- 8:36Dry rot, mold, tons of ants, all kinds of stuff going on in this
- 8:40primary bathroom because they've done some kind of a repair on
- 8:43the shower and they've done it poorly.
- 8:46And it was leaking water for years.
- 8:49And as a result of that, there was tons of dry rot.
- 8:51There was mold, everything was soft and the drywall was falling
- 8:56apart. But we didn't know that because
- 8:58he had covered it up with about 7 layers of fresh paint and
- 9:03caulk and just done a really good job of hiding all the
- 9:07evidence that there was major, major problems in the
- 9:10infrastructure of the shower and the bathroom.
- 9:13And So what happened inevitably was, I don't know, six months
- 9:17after we moved into the house, water started pouring through
- 9:20the ceiling of our laundry room. And as we started to do some
- 9:23discovery and pull some stuff up, we realized, Oh my God, the
- 9:28entire piling laminate floor, everything in the bathroom was
- 9:32covered in mold. It was dry rotted and it was
- 9:34falling apart. And now the floor is literally
- 9:37falling apart. And that's exactly how I think
- 9:41about people who approach life as being only positive.
- 9:44You have to think positively at all times.
- 9:47It's like covering up the dry rot with 7 layers of paint and
- 9:50just hoping for the best and just hoping that water doesn't
- 9:53start pouring through the ceiling in the floor below.
- 9:57It's a landmine waiting to be stepped on.
- 9:59It's a massive problem that will explode at some point because
- 10:03you can't have a human experience with only positive
- 10:06emotions. It's just not possible.
- 10:08You have to be able to experience both sides of the
- 10:10coin. And being a human, you are
- 10:13inherently going to face challenge.
- 10:15You are inherently going to experience the low frequency and
- 10:18the high frequency emotions. And with any circumstance, being
- 10:22able to see both sides of those circumstances is a skill.
- 10:26You don't just have to focus on the positive, but you can
- 10:29acknowledge that everything has polarity, equal and opposite
- 10:33reactions. There is negative and positive
- 10:36to everything. And you know, I love talking
- 10:40about frequency. Being a high frequency person,
- 10:43being in a high frequency state is something that I think is
- 10:46really important. I value that.
- 10:48But let's create a distinction here.
- 10:51It's not about being positive all the time.
- 10:54This is really important. Being positive all the time,
- 10:58seeing nothing but good and being blind to the bad or the
- 11:01low frequency or the negative, as we said, is very dishonest to
- 11:06ourselves. Our cells know it is not true.
- 11:10It's denial, it's avoidance, it's pushing feelings away.
- 11:14And that's not high frequency. Those are actually low frequency
- 11:18behaviors. High frequency is about being in
- 11:22a state of emotion, where you are feeling things like
- 11:25gratitude or enthusiasm or appreciation or curiosity or joy
- 11:31as much as you can. It doesn't mean that you don't
- 11:33experience other emotions, and it certainly doesn't mean that
- 11:37you don't have feelings like sadness or grief or
- 11:40disappointment or anger or shame or hopelessness.
- 11:42Those are all parts of being human.
- 11:46And in fact, if you didn't have those feelings in certain
- 11:48situation, it would be weird. You know, for example, if you
- 11:51lose someone that you love dearly, it would be strange to
- 11:55not feel grief and sadness. That's not a natural response.
- 11:59To push that away, you know, to deny those feelings is not
- 12:03helpful. It's not high frequency.
- 12:06So the work to be done and the solution is not simply to think
- 12:11positively. There's so much more to it and I
- 12:15often think about it as resiliency and being buoyant.
- 12:19Just like a cork being pushed under the water.
- 12:21Life will hand you circumstances that is going to push you down
- 12:26and get you into those lower frequency emotions, no problem.
- 12:29The question is, can I process those feelings?
- 12:32Can I let them move through me? Can I see this circumstance for
- 12:38all that it is the negative, the positive, the neutral, and not
- 12:42just one way? And then can I bounce back up?
- 12:45Can I be buoyant like that cork and return to my baseline,
- 12:50hopefully a baseline that gets higher and higher as you learn
- 12:54more and you continue to do the work.
- 12:57So that's the third myth. Just think positively.
- 13:01And then the last one is that it takes a long time to change.
- 13:07No, it doesn't. No, it doesn't, Team.
- 13:09It does not take a long time to change.
- 13:12What it takes is a decision, and most people just don't want to
- 13:16make a decision. And I say this with love and
- 13:19compassion because I have been there so many times.
- 13:21Still in these moments, in these days, these current days, I
- 13:25catch myself being indecisive and not going all in on stuff.
- 13:29So I'm not judging. This is part of human condition.
- 13:33But most people don't want to make a decision.
- 13:35They hope, they pray, they write affirmations, they wish they
- 13:39want, they negotiate, they analyze, they ruminate, but they
- 13:43never decide. And when we decide something, it
- 13:48becomes more concrete. Now, the patterns of behavior,
- 13:52of course, might take some practice.
- 13:53You might want to change some patterns.
- 13:54Behavior. Yeah.
- 13:55Might take a little bit of practice.
- 13:56Old beliefs. Yeah, they might take some
- 13:58unraveling. But the change doesn't take
- 14:01forever. In fact, it can happen very,
- 14:03very fast. Once someone decides that is,
- 14:08you know, I have another business, Next Level Nutrition
- 14:11and it's a coaching program that helps people lose weight and
- 14:14heal metabolism. It's a total game changer for
- 14:17people. But what I will very
- 14:18transparently tell you is that the people who are most
- 14:21successful in the program are the people who decide.
- 14:26They decide to change their habits, to go all in on the
- 14:28program curriculum, to follow the plan to choose healthy
- 14:31foods, etcetera, etcetera. They decide.
- 14:36And those who do not decide, those who waver and fight with
- 14:40themselves and ham and Haw and argue about how you know they
- 14:44can't do it, or so many millions of different reasons and
- 14:47negotiations with self they don't do as well.
- 14:51And that is because of the very simple truth that you can't make
- 14:54people do things they have to decide for themselves.
- 14:59And this is something that I wrestle with because I want to
- 15:04go in and really help people. I want to go in and say, I have
- 15:10a tool for you and this tool is going to help you.
- 15:13And all you have to do is take it from my hands.
- 15:15And here you go. And I've had to come to terms
- 15:18with the fact that that's not how it works.
- 15:21People have to decide to take the tool out of your hands and
- 15:25use it. I often think about the fact
- 15:28that a lot of people have like treadmills in their house.
- 15:32We all know that treadmills are great.
- 15:35Treadmills are a great fitness tool, right?
- 15:37It's like a multi $1,000,000 industry is selling treadmills
- 15:41and you can give someone a treadmill.
- 15:44We all know that it's going to be awesome for them.
- 15:46But the results that that person will experience as a result of
- 15:50that treadmill are based on how long and how often they use it.
- 15:55They have to decide to actually get on it and turn it on and
- 15:59it's only the person who has it in their living room who can
- 16:01decide to hop on. It's something that I very much
- 16:05have to reckon with and and allow for in my own practice is
- 16:10to let people make their own decisions.
- 16:13And I have to remember too that this applies to my progress and
- 16:16my decision making as well. Often when I'm out and about in
- 16:21social situations with my wife, I will overhear conversations
- 16:25that people are having with her about her bodybuilding process.
- 16:29And what I often hear people say is, oh, I could never do that.
- 16:32And then they give some variation of reason.
- 16:34Oh, I like food too much. I have no self-control.
- 16:37Oh, I don't, I don't have that kind of self-discipline.
- 16:39I could never get up that early on and on and on.
- 16:42And again, here's the truth. My wife's amazing.
- 16:45She is, but she's not some guru of self-control or
- 16:49self-discipline. She's human like all the rest of
- 16:53us, you and me. And there was a time that she
- 16:56didn't always get up that early. She didn't always used to go to
- 17:00the gym and follow a training program.
- 17:02She didn't always used to eat this healthy.
- 17:06She just decided. She decided that this was
- 17:09something she wanted to do and commit to.
- 17:12And over the course of the last two years, she's seen massive
- 17:15change. And yes, she has grit and
- 17:18resilience, but that has also been sharpened and honed over
- 17:22time for her through her practice and through her
- 17:24decision to commit to this thing.
- 17:28And so that is the 4th myth that it takes a long time to change.
- 17:33Not doesn't team, you got this. So I don't know if any of these
- 17:37resonate with you. I'm not sure if one of these
- 17:40fours standing out for you, but I guarantee that at some point
- 17:44in your life, you've bumped up against some of these.
- 17:46And I challenge you this week to debunk your own myths about
- 17:51what's possible for you, for your growth, for your life, and
- 17:55what you can create in it. Because we need people to stand
- 17:59up and have powerful impact in the world right now.
- 18:02And that means you, you've got some very unique gifts.
- 18:05You are very important to your sphere, your community.
- 18:09You have an influence and an impact that is beyond
- 18:12exponential if you put it to use.
- 18:14And I would love to see it happen.
- 18:17And so if any of these four are standing out to you, challenge
- 18:20yourself to work on that this week.
- 18:23Challenge your beliefs, debunk your own myths and let's see
- 18:26what's possible. That's all for today.
