Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too. This is the podcast that comes after
- 0:10Speaker 2: the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland
- 0:29Speaker 1: bonus episode, a little thing we like to call the
- 0:32Speaker 1: after party. This is the show after the show, the
- 0:34Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 0:36Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard
- 0:39Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we
- 0:43Speaker 1: are talking about Mama Cass Elliott. We are previewing the
- 0:46Speaker 1: coming episode on Chris Cornell talking down in Dirty Rockstar Autobiographies,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and we get into your voicemails, text DMS emails and
- 0:54Speaker 1: as always.
- 0:55Speaker 2: A whole lot of rosie. All Right, disc goes, Let's
- 0:57Speaker 2: get into it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: In the Mama Cass Elliott episodes at the top of
- 1:15Speaker 1: your feed this week. There is one story in particular
- 1:18Speaker 1: that really influenced my thinking about this story about Cass,
- 1:22Speaker 1: about Sharon Tate, Charles Manson, etc. And it's the story
- 1:27Speaker 1: that actor Michael Caine tells about being at a party
- 1:30Speaker 1: at Cass's house where both Sharon Tate and Charles Manson
- 1:35Speaker 1: are present. I heard about the story in Tom O'Neill's
- 1:40Speaker 1: book Chaos. Tom cites it, and the reason this story
- 1:44Speaker 1: is so important is because it blows a major hole
- 1:47Speaker 1: in Vincent Buliosi's Helter Skelter theory. Now, I'm not going
- 1:51Speaker 1: to get into all of it here, because that's what
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Mama cass Elliott episodes are for, and the Sharon
- 1:56Speaker 1: Tate once as well.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Those are the Hollywood Land feed by the.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Way I bring it up to get to another point.
- 2:02Speaker 1: When I read this story in Tom O'Neill's Chaos, the
- 2:05Speaker 1: story of Sharon Tate and Charles Manson being at the
- 2:08Speaker 1: same party that is depicted by Michael Kain, I had
- 2:11Speaker 1: to see the original source material because the story was
- 2:15Speaker 1: so bizarre and just no one had ever mentioned anything
- 2:20Speaker 1: like this before. So I went looking for the book
- 2:23Speaker 1: that O'Neill cites. It's called What's It All About? By
- 2:25Speaker 1: Michael Kain, which is an autobiography and largely details the
- 2:30Speaker 1: actors early days in Hollywood kins. Michael Kain has multiple
- 2:34Speaker 1: memoirs and this is just one of them. This one
- 2:37Speaker 1: is very well written, published by a real publishing house, etc.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And Michael Kain is still, as you know, very much relevant.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So you can imagine my surprise when I learned that
- 2:46Speaker 1: this book is not only out of print, but it
- 2:49Speaker 1: is extremely hard to get your hands on, so difficult
- 2:53Speaker 1: that it started to seem to me that it was
- 2:55Speaker 1: almost like they didn't want you to read it. But
- 2:57Speaker 1: I got the book anyway. I paid a pretty penny
- 3:00Speaker 1: for it online. And there isn't much in the book
- 3:03Speaker 1: that is risque or revealing or over the top or
- 3:06Speaker 1: incriminating except for this story, the one about Charles Manson
- 3:10Speaker 1: and Sharon Tate being at the same party, and it's
- 3:12Speaker 1: the story is not even integral to the book. It's
- 3:15Speaker 1: a very small passage in one chapter. Beach Boy Dennis
- 3:19Speaker 1: Wilson's book, The Real Beach Boy. Now I get why
- 3:22Speaker 1: they don't want you to read this book. It's chock
- 3:25Speaker 1: full of wild stories about Dennis and his time in
- 3:28Speaker 1: the so called Golden Penetrators with Terry Melcher and Greg Jacobson.
- 3:33Speaker 1: If you want to hear more on this story, you
- 3:34Speaker 1: can check out The Beach Boys's Grace Stand episodes.
- 3:36Speaker 2: But the point is these two books, each.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Detailing portions of the real Charles Manson's story for whatever reason,
- 3:43Speaker 1: they can't be obtained and read easily. And one of
- 3:46Speaker 1: these is an autobiography, and the other it's not an autobiography.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It's a biography, but it's not a work of fiction.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Now, at the same time, right now, as I'm going
- 3:57Speaker 1: through all this in my head talking to you guys
- 3:58Speaker 1: about it, I'm reading another book by an author named Manson. No,
- 4:04Speaker 1: not Charles Manson, Marilyn Manson. I'm reading his or Brian
- 4:08Speaker 1: Warner's autobiography. Brian Warner is, of course the real name
- 4:12Speaker 1: of Marilyn Manson, and the Marilyn Manson autobiography is called
- 4:15Speaker 1: The Long Hard Road out of Hell. I'm reading this
- 4:17Speaker 1: in preparation for a Marilyn Manson episode that's coming your
- 4:19Speaker 1: way in late May. Now, there's nothing in Michael Kaine's
- 4:23Speaker 1: autobiography or in the Dennis Wilson biography that, on face value,
- 4:27Speaker 1: even approaches the shocking amount of material in Marilyn Manson's book.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So my first question is why why are the Michael
- 4:38Speaker 1: Kaine and Dennis Wilson books nearly impossible to get your
- 4:42Speaker 1: hands on? And I think I answered that question. I
- 4:45Speaker 1: think I answered it in the episodes on Cass Elliott.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But my second question is what are the most shocking
- 4:52Speaker 1: rock star autobiographies? Now I went looking for a list,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and I guess the real shock here is that there
- 4:58Speaker 1: isn't really a list. So I thought, who better to
- 5:01Speaker 1: make this list than us? Then you're truly here with
- 5:05Speaker 1: your help. I've read my fair share of these books,
- 5:07Speaker 1: so you know, you guys have heard me talk about
- 5:10Speaker 1: these artists, so we're all in this sort of unique
- 5:12Speaker 1: position to put this list together. But then I thought, well,
- 5:15Speaker 1: lists are kind of boring unless they're totally outrageous, like
- 5:18Speaker 1: the list of top grunge albums from a couple of
- 5:20Speaker 1: weeks back, or that list of artists nominated for the
- 5:23Speaker 1: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from last week. By
- 5:25Speaker 1: the way, we should have a final list of inductees
- 5:27Speaker 1: by next week's after party.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We'll get into that.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So my point is I don't want to make this list,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but I do want to tell you that the Marilyn
- 5:35Speaker 1: Manson autobiography is, without a doubt, the most damning book
- 5:39Speaker 1: by a rock star that I've ever read, More damning
- 5:42Speaker 1: than Motley Cruz The Dirt, more damning than Rick James's
- 5:45Speaker 1: book glow. I'm halfway through Manson's autobiography and so far
- 5:49Speaker 1: there isn't a shred of humility or even really humanity.
- 5:53Speaker 1: It is pretty fucking dark. It is funny, though, so
- 5:57Speaker 1: I guess there's some humanity in that somehow. Marilyn Manson
- 6:01Speaker 1: is funny. I think I knew that, but I didn't
- 6:03Speaker 1: really haven't really experienced it before. And Manson is a
- 6:07Speaker 1: really good writer, he truly is. But like I said,
- 6:09Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson dark. Now my final thinking on this subject,
- 6:14Speaker 1: what major rock stars have yet to write their autobiographies? Now? This, this,
- 6:20Speaker 1: to me is an interesting list.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Madonna is at the top of this list.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And you'd think that Madge would have written her story
- 6:27Speaker 1: by now, but no, And I think it's because she's
- 6:29Speaker 1: working on her story for a film and she's been
- 6:32Speaker 1: doing this for the past few years.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But I can't really say.
- 6:34Speaker 1: All I can say is that I've read enough already
- 6:37Speaker 1: about Madonna. I've heard enough as well about Madonna secondhand,
- 6:41Speaker 1: some firsthand actually on what Madonna got up to in
- 6:44Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties and the nineties. And I'm just saying,
- 6:48Speaker 1: if Madonna took an honest stab at telling her story,
- 6:51Speaker 1: then I'm certain it would give Marilyn and Motley Crue
- 6:55Speaker 1: a run for their money. The nineties were fucked up, man,
- 6:59Speaker 1: dark dark rockstar shit went on in the nineties, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: Madonna was at the height of her power during that decade.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So there's Madonna. But who else is there? Okay, there's
- 7:07Speaker 1: Mick Jagger. Yes there is, as of yet, no autobiography
- 7:11Speaker 1: by mister Jerry Hall. Mick just got engaged, by the way,
- 7:14Speaker 1: eighty two years old and his fiance is only something
- 7:17Speaker 1: like six years older than tattoo You. I'm not clever
- 7:21Speaker 1: enough to have come up with that on my own.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I stole that from a rock journalist, Stephen Hyden on Twitter.
- 7:26Speaker 2: That's not my joke.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Mick Jagger not having an autobiography, though, That's that's not
- 7:30Speaker 1: a joke either. This is more of a crime. Okay,
- 7:32Speaker 1: his music lovers, as music historians, we deserve a Mick
- 7:36Speaker 1: Jagger autobiography. I find it curious that there's no Mick
- 7:39Speaker 1: Jagger autobiography.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Why not? I'll tell you why not.
- 7:43Speaker 1: There's too many stories, and unlike Keith Richards, I'm betting
- 7:47Speaker 1: that Mick Jagger remembers most of what he's gone through
- 7:49Speaker 1: in his life, and he's likely horrified by the prospect
- 7:52Speaker 1: of having to piece it all into a narrative and
- 7:57Speaker 1: what would happen to him if he did.
- 8:00Speaker 2: In an attempt in.
- 8:00Speaker 1: The early eighties at an autobiography, but his publisher rejected it,
- 8:04Speaker 1: saying that it was too light on the sex and
- 8:06Speaker 1: the drugs. I don't think we're ever getting a Mick
- 8:09Speaker 1: Jagger autobiography, not in a post Me Too era.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Now.
- 8:13Speaker 1: All the other books I've mentioned here were released pre
- 8:17Speaker 1: Me Too, when Marilyn Manson and Motley Crue and Rick
- 8:21Speaker 1: James and the like get away with detailing their horrible
- 8:24Speaker 1: treatment of women firsthand. I still cannot believe that they
- 8:28Speaker 1: wrote these books. I couldn't believe it then, I can't
- 8:31Speaker 1: believe it now. Honestly, it's you know, it's in part
- 8:33Speaker 1: why I started disgracing. But Mick's Mick Jaggers. He's too smart.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think he'd gained nothing by telling his story other
- 8:41Speaker 1: than in an ego boost, I suppose, But my guess
- 8:44Speaker 1: is Mick is taking his stories to the grave. Madonna,
- 8:47Speaker 1: on the other hand, an autobiography by Madonna would be
- 8:49Speaker 1: less shocking were to be released.
- 8:51Speaker 2: But I doubt we'd get the real shit.
- 8:53Speaker 1: My guess is she cherry picked certain stories for shock value,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but wouldn't give us any of what really went down,
- 8:59Speaker 1: which is her prerogative. I wouldn't mind a Kanye autobiography,
- 9:04Speaker 1: a real one, not some racist performance are piece like
- 9:07Speaker 1: his ex account currently serves as. I'd like an explanation
- 9:09Speaker 1: as to what the fuck's been going on in his
- 9:11Speaker 1: head the last five years, ten years, really, but I
- 9:14Speaker 1: fear that the mentally ill, at least relative to Kanye,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't think he has the ability for that kind
- 9:22Speaker 1: of self reflection. But you know, I'd like Kanye's take
- 9:25Speaker 1: on the entertainment industry a really truly, like a real
- 9:27Speaker 1: take from his vantage point.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It's never gonna.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Happen, though, all right, maybe you'll get a Kanye episode
- 9:33Speaker 1: of Just Grace Saying though sometime in the near future,
- 9:35Speaker 1: to go with your Marilyn Manson episode.
- 9:37Speaker 2: That's definitely happening.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I do know coming up next in your feed, you're
- 9:41Speaker 1: getting a couple Eagles episodes. Talk about stories rock stars
- 9:44Speaker 1: don't want you to hear the Henley story in the
- 9:46Speaker 1: book You'll Never Make Love in This Town Again. I
- 9:48Speaker 1: spent a pretty Penny Small Fortune getting my hands on
- 9:51Speaker 1: that book as well. And you will hear why when
- 9:53Speaker 1: you listen to these two episodes that are coming up.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So much debauchery.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Okay, following those Eagles rewind episodes that are hitting your
- 10:00Speaker 1: feed tomorrow. Our next full episode on Tuesday is on
- 10:03Speaker 1: Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audio Slave, which brings us
- 10:07Speaker 1: to next week's question of the week. When you're listening
- 10:10Speaker 1: to the Chris Cornell episode, I want you to be
- 10:12Speaker 1: thinking about which musicians had a follow up band that
- 10:14Speaker 1: was better than their breakthrough band.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Okay, so what do you mean by that?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Well, come on, Chris Cornell broke through with Soundgarden, but
- 10:21Speaker 1: he followed it up with Audio Slave, and a lot
- 10:23Speaker 1: of people think, and I'm not one of them, that
- 10:25Speaker 1: Audio Slave is better than Soundgarden. So there's a bunch
- 10:29Speaker 1: of these examples out there. I'm not going to go
- 10:31Speaker 1: through them now. We're going to go through them next
- 10:33Speaker 1: week when you call me six one seven nine oh
- 10:35Speaker 1: six six six three eight and leave me a voicemail
- 10:37Speaker 1: and send me a text and let me know which
- 10:40Speaker 1: artists follow up bands were as impactful or better than
- 10:44Speaker 1: their breakthrough bands. Okay, all right, I'm gonna take a break.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'll be hanging on the telephone on the other side
- 10:50Speaker 1: of this break with your voicemails, texts and dms.
- 11:12Speaker 2: All Right, six one seven nine oh six sixty six
- 11:14Speaker 2: three eight.
- 11:15Speaker 1: You know where I'm at. I'm in the phone booth.
- 11:16Speaker 1: That's one across the hall. I'm hanging on the telephone.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You want to send me a voicemail? You want to
- 11:19Speaker 1: send me a text? Six one seven nine oh six
- 11:22Speaker 1: six six three eight. Let's check out some voicemails. This
- 11:25Speaker 1: one comes from Justin in the five to four to oh.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Jay.
- 11:31Speaker 4: This is Justin from the five four to oh. I
- 11:34Speaker 4: just really needed to weigh in on this debacle that
- 11:39Speaker 4: we're calling the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sham
- 11:44Speaker 4: whatever you want to call it. But anyways, your your
- 11:46Speaker 4: list gave me an idea for my own list. So
- 11:50Speaker 4: here's my seventh. Okay, and we'll go in order one
- 11:55Speaker 4: to seven. So first one, you know, Motorhead on. Second
- 11:59Speaker 4: would be fog Hat, maybe Blue Orster Calls. Third would
- 12:04Speaker 4: be Humble five, fourth would be Johnny thunders and or
- 12:09Speaker 4: the New York Dolls five Billy Idle Dix. We'll go ahead,
- 12:14Speaker 4: and do Oasis now seven seven, I'm gonna go ahead
- 12:18Speaker 4: and throw the Misfits in there just because I want to.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Because way it is justin.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Thank you for the call. Fantastic list, man. I don't
- 12:27Speaker 1: know about fog hat. I mean, I could quibble with
- 12:29Speaker 1: your list, but I think I think you're right on
- 12:32Speaker 1: with Johnny Thunders and New York Dolls, Billy Idol in Oasis.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I like how you're tipping your hat to the current nominees.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I think that's smart. I think this is a solid list,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and you talk about the Misfits later, I.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Mean, yeah, you gotta have. There needs to be room
- 12:45Speaker 2: for more.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Of that og seventies early eighties punk that we're on
- 12:50Speaker 1: to influence so many of the bands that are currently
- 12:52Speaker 1: being nominated that are from later generations, nineties, et cetera.
- 12:57Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Love love to take Justin, thanks so much. We'll get
- 13:01Speaker 1: into this more, guys, and next week. I wanted to
- 13:03Speaker 1: play Justin's voicemail because we're going to get into this
- 13:05Speaker 1: more next week when I think next week, by the
- 13:07Speaker 1: time we talk again, and if not next week, definitely
- 13:10Speaker 1: the week after, we should have some clarity from the
- 13:14Speaker 1: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on who the seven
- 13:18Speaker 1: nominees excuse me, inductees for this year will be. In
- 13:21Speaker 1: the meantime, you want to voice your opinion on who
- 13:23Speaker 1: those seven should be six one, seven, nine oh six, six,
- 13:25Speaker 1: six three eight voicemail and text.
- 13:28Speaker 2: All right, let's check out this one from the four
- 13:30Speaker 2: to seven.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Oh J. It's one of your biggest fans, Bernard. Mine
- 13:35Speaker 4: is a two part issue. One is I can't find
- 13:40Speaker 4: any of your bad lands anywhere. Have you taken them off?
- 13:44Speaker 4: I mean, I would love, you know, for you to
- 13:46Speaker 4: be post them and tell us where we can still
- 13:48Speaker 4: listen to them, because you know, they're so wonderful, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 4: even if you have to rebrand them, you know, a
- 13:54Speaker 4: disgraced land. I would love just to be able to
- 13:56Speaker 4: access them. And number two, I think there are two
- 14:00Speaker 4: stories that you really need to look into a do
- 14:03Speaker 4: some research and and and tell the world about. One
- 14:08Speaker 4: is the the the great vocalist Roy Hamilton. How he
- 14:12Speaker 4: is the genesis of Elvis's singing style, so much that
- 14:17Speaker 4: everyone who does an impression bothly of Elvis is doing
- 14:20Speaker 4: an impression of an impression. Two of the great unbelievably
- 14:26Speaker 4: uninherited R and B singer Little Willie John. He's the
- 14:33Speaker 4: very first version and the best version of the song
- 14:36Speaker 4: Fever and the story about how he died and the
- 14:40Speaker 4: stabbing you know that took place of that that house,
- 14:43Speaker 4: you know that that went on, that that cost him
- 14:45Speaker 4: his freedom. It is a fascinating story and he is
- 14:48Speaker 4: truly an unsung, you know, unherded, you know, vocal talent,
- 14:55Speaker 4: as is Roy Hamilton. I would love to see what
- 14:58Speaker 4: you could do with those stories.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Take care, Bernard, thank you, thank you for the voicemail, Bernard, Bernard,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you have an excellent voice.
- 15:05Speaker 2: You ever thought about doing a podcast?
- 15:07Speaker 1: First question, hollywood Land? Sorry you said bad Lands. We're
- 15:10Speaker 1: gonna find the bad Lands episodes. We've rebranded them hollywood Land.
- 15:13Speaker 1: That's likely why you're not finding them, Bernard. Just search
- 15:15Speaker 1: hollywood Land in any of your podcast players and you'll
- 15:18Speaker 1: find a new feed, a hollywood Land feed, and you
- 15:21Speaker 1: can subscribe there. And we've got about forty or so
- 15:24Speaker 1: episodes in there right now. We're gonna have more news
- 15:26Speaker 1: on hollywood Land and what we've got coming down the
- 15:27Speaker 1: pike in a couple of weeks on your suggestions, really
- 15:30Speaker 1: great ones, Roy Hamilton. I don't know much about Roy Hamilton.
- 15:33Speaker 1: People have brought them up to me in the past.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Appreciate your your prompting. Here, it's gonna make me do
- 15:40Speaker 1: a little digging. I'll root around see if I can
- 15:42Speaker 1: find a crime angle, some sort of angle besides this.
- 15:44Speaker 1: See the Elvis influence. Little Willy John is that who
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm thinking of? That real, real high voice. I didn't
- 15:51Speaker 1: know about the stabbing.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I love this.
- 15:53Speaker 1: This is a true crime angle with little Willy John.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So perhaps that's something that we'll get into in the
- 15:57Speaker 1: near future as well. Bernard, thank you so much much
- 16:00Speaker 1: for the call. Appreciate six one seven nine or six
- 16:02Speaker 1: six six three eight. Guys you want to get in
- 16:04Speaker 1: touch voicemail and text? Oh my god, look at this one.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:09Speaker 1: This one comes from This text comes from the three
- 16:11Speaker 1: to zero two, who writes in, bro, my local library
- 16:17Speaker 1: has what's it all about? I just put a hold
- 16:19Speaker 1: on it. Okay, So what's it all about? Is the
- 16:21Speaker 1: Michael Kaine book we were just talking about. Then I
- 16:23Speaker 1: get another text. This is a couple hours later. It's
- 16:27Speaker 1: also on audible and you can buy it used from Amazon.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Okay, cool, cool.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Then I get another text, but an hour later, so
- 16:35Speaker 1: the audible books skip nineteen sixty six to nineteen seventy
- 16:40Speaker 1: three conveniently. How fucked up is that? So the book
- 16:43Speaker 1: is available through Audible, which I didn't know. I guess
- 16:48Speaker 1: I wasn't.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I would never.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I don't do any research with audio books. I just
- 16:53Speaker 1: do it all with hard copies or digital books. I
- 16:56Speaker 1: need a book when I'm researching, not in my ears.
- 16:59Speaker 1: So I did not look on Audible for the Michael knebook.
- 17:03Speaker 1: But how interesting is this that it is available? But
- 17:06Speaker 1: they've cut out the year nineteen sixty nine when this
- 17:09Speaker 1: meeting happens.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Crazy three h two love this text? Thank you all right?
- 17:15Speaker 1: Nine two oh is writing in telling me they're an
- 17:19Speaker 1: ancestor of John Wilkes Booth.
- 17:23Speaker 2: What no, Edward P.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Dherty who tracked John Wilkes Booth and brought his body
- 17:28Speaker 1: back to Washington CEE. I don't know what that has
- 17:30Speaker 1: to do with disgrace them, but hey, I'm in an
- 17:33Speaker 1: interesting family lineage, So yeah, thank.
- 17:35Speaker 2: You for the text. Nine two oh.
- 17:37Speaker 1: What else we got here? Mike from the five eight
- 17:39Speaker 1: five in Rochester. Mike from the five A five in
- 17:42Speaker 1: Rochester talking about Rochester being featured again in the Billie
- 17:46Speaker 1: Idol episode.
- 17:47Speaker 2: What is it with musicians getting arrested? There?
- 17:49Speaker 1: That's right, Bowie and Iggy Pop were arrested in Rochester
- 17:53Speaker 1: as well, and five eight five is talking here about
- 17:56Speaker 1: joy division and new order. That one escapes me five
- 17:59Speaker 1: A five, Thank you for the text three four six
- 18:02Speaker 1: rights and Hello. I've been listening for years, but I
- 18:04Speaker 1: needed to put my two cents in on the Rock
- 18:07Speaker 1: and Roll Hall of Fame nominees. I'm a first generation
- 18:10Speaker 1: Mexican American and I love Mana and what they stand for.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Their activism for humanitarian and environmental rights has been something
- 18:18Speaker 1: I always responded to, and I vividly remember singing songs
- 18:22Speaker 1: as a kid and later learning their true meaning. It's
- 18:24Speaker 1: music I still play and enjoy introducing to my kids.
- 18:26Speaker 1: It's part of our history and culture. Love to get
- 18:28Speaker 1: your take on some of their classic albums from Houston,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Susie Susie. I'm gonna check it out. And I meant
- 18:34Speaker 1: no disrespect to Mana. I hope I'm saying that correctly,
- 18:39Speaker 1: but my only point was, as I made last week,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I should know I should have least heard of a
- 18:45Speaker 1: band if they're being nominated into the Rock and Roll
- 18:49Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. And I don't put that on me.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You can put it on me, but I don't put
- 18:52Speaker 1: it on me. I put it on the band. That
- 18:55Speaker 1: was my only point. Doesn't mean they're not good, doesn't
- 18:57Speaker 1: mean that I'm not gonna love them, doesn't mean they're
- 18:59Speaker 1: not I don't know, worthy of massive fan base.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna check them out. Appreciate you, Susie. Thank you.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Six one seven nine six six six three eight. You
- 19:09Speaker 1: guys want to send me a voicemail or a text
- 19:12Speaker 1: eight one two rights in. I just started listening to
- 19:14Speaker 1: disgrace Land and I'm all in you and your team
- 19:16Speaker 1: rock my socks.
- 19:17Speaker 2: We're all about rocking those socks. Welcome. Thanks for hanging out.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Call back voicemail.
- 19:23Speaker 1: You know texting is like the entry the gateway drug
- 19:27Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, to the Disgraceland community. Voicemail, You're all in
- 19:30Speaker 1: man six one seven nine o six six six three eight.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Can also send us a DM at Disgrace slamdpod on
- 19:37Speaker 1: Instagram x Facebook, Coco over on Instagram. Our good friend,
- 19:42Speaker 1: Coco writes in in response to this post we made
- 19:46Speaker 1: in our stories. I did this interview with The Creative Independent,
- 19:49Speaker 1: great little magazine up in the Northwest, about process, about
- 19:52Speaker 1: what I do to write and produce these shows, mainly
- 19:54Speaker 1: the writing side of it. And I spoke about, you
- 19:57Speaker 1: know everything, really get into the granular nuts and bolts
- 19:59Speaker 1: of it. And I spoke about getting up early. It's
- 20:03Speaker 1: just part of the routine. It's because I have to
- 20:05Speaker 1: get the writing, the hardest part done early before the
- 20:08Speaker 1: rest of the day kind of impedes upon my brain.
- 20:11Speaker 1: And Coco writes it's so relatable. I get up at
- 20:14Speaker 1: five am two and do all the important heavy work first.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Nice to have some insight on your creative process. If
- 20:18Speaker 1: you guys are interested, like Coco in the creative process,
- 20:21Speaker 1: just search out Disgraceland Jake Brennan and The Creative Independent
- 20:25Speaker 1: as a great interview in there that I did with
- 20:28Speaker 1: with my man Jay Bennett.
- 20:29Speaker 2: We're going to do something new here in the after party.
- 20:32Speaker 1: You guys can have yours truly myself, me, me, myself
- 20:36Speaker 1: and I on your voicemail machine. Okay, I can be
- 20:40Speaker 1: the voice of your virtual answering machine. I will record
- 20:43Speaker 1: a message for you, is what I'm saying.
- 20:45Speaker 2: That you can play.
- 20:46Speaker 1: You can have playing for whoever calls you to leave
- 20:49Speaker 1: you a message. Hey, this is Jake Brennan from Disgrace
- 20:51Speaker 1: Sand and deb isn't available to take your call right
- 20:53Speaker 1: now because she's out doing something awesome. So leave your
- 20:55Speaker 1: message at the tone or something like that. Here's how
- 20:58Speaker 1: you can make this happen. You got to find the
- 21:00Speaker 1: easter egg.
- 21:00Speaker 2: That's right. It's Easter this weekend, and that means it's
- 21:03Speaker 2: Easter egg time. And I don't just mean the literal kind.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I mean the figurative kind, and the figurative easter eggs
- 21:08Speaker 1: are in the most recent episode of Hollywood Land Part
- 21:11Speaker 1: two on Sharon Tate. Now, there's an easter egg in
- 21:15Speaker 1: that episode. If you can find it and you can
- 21:18Speaker 1: be the first to comment on our Instagram today or
- 21:21Speaker 1: first to call me or text me at six one
- 21:23Speaker 1: seven nine oh six sixty six three eight with the
- 21:25Speaker 1: right answer, then you yes, you mister or missus Disgrace
- 21:30Speaker 1: LAM listener will, like I said, receive a recording of
- 21:34Speaker 1: me for your voicemail message. Here's the Easter egg question
- 21:39Speaker 1: and the Sharon Tate Part two episode of Hollywood Land.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Who did Sharon Tate ask for advice from concerning her
- 21:45Speaker 1: marital problems with Roman Polanski. Who did Sharon seek out
- 21:49Speaker 1: for advice? Okay, that's the question. Call me six one
- 21:52Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight and leave
- 21:55Speaker 1: me a voicemail, send me a text with your answers,
- 21:58Speaker 1: or just be the first to comment the answer on
- 22:00Speaker 1: the Instagram post when we pose this question again. The
- 22:03Speaker 1: easter egg answer is in the Sharon Tate Part two
- 22:05Speaker 1: episode of Hollywood Land And Now for something totally different,
- 22:10Speaker 1: quick sports rant in under thirty second speaking of autobiographies.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Earlier in this episode, the most fascinating man in the
- 22:17Speaker 1: history of sports has a new autobiography out, Bill Belichick,
- 22:22Speaker 1: coach of the New England Patriots, and I hear that
- 22:24Speaker 1: there are no juicy tidbits to be had, just straight
- 22:27Speaker 1: talk on leadership and winning. And I'm sorry, I almost
- 22:32Speaker 1: bored myself to sleep there. I don't want to talk
- 22:34Speaker 1: on leadership and winning. I already got that in the
- 22:37Speaker 1: Haversham book on Bill Belichick. Okay, I don't need another
- 22:40Speaker 1: one of those books, all right. I want the dirt man.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I want to know why Bill Jennison Brady out in
- 22:46Speaker 1: new way that. I want to know why Bill sat
- 22:48Speaker 1: Wes Welker to start the twenty ten AFC Championship. I
- 22:51Speaker 1: want to know what in the hell Malcolm Butler did
- 22:54Speaker 1: to piss off Bill Belichick before Super Bowl fifty two. Okay,
- 22:58Speaker 1: all right, that's enough sports. Back in the lash through
- 23:00Speaker 1: emails in a Hollywood Lab Minute.
- 23:16Speaker 2: All right, we are back and you know what time
- 23:18Speaker 2: it is.
- 23:18Speaker 1: It's time for the Hollywood lad Minute, brought to you
- 23:20Speaker 1: by the Hollywood Lamb Podcast.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Don't know what the Hollywood Lab podcast is? Well, the
- 23:23Speaker 2: Hollywood Lamb Podcast is hosted about.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yours truly, where every week I tell you a story
- 23:27Speaker 1: from the annex of Hollywood and true crime. And right
- 23:29Speaker 1: now there are over forty episodes waiting for you to bane.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Episodes on James Dean, Armie Hammer, Charlie she And, Danny Treo,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Marilyn Monroe, Steve McQueen, Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda, and most recently,
- 23:39Speaker 1: the very talented and very beautiful Sharon Tate.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Here's a clip.
- 23:46Speaker 1: October tenth, nineteen sixty seven, a hotel room in Rome,
- 23:50Speaker 1: America's perfect movie star, Sharon Tate watching television more than
- 23:55Speaker 1: a thousand miles away on a Southampton doc in the UK.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Sharon's friend, Cass Elliott, was in handcuffs.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Sharon watched it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: All go down on the black and white set, like
- 24:06Speaker 1: the rest of America watching on their own TV sets
- 24:08Speaker 1: back home. Sharon was in shock. Cass was being charged
- 24:13Speaker 1: with stealing towels and soap from a London hotel, held
- 24:16Speaker 1: over from the last time she was in London. How
- 24:19Speaker 1: embarrassing Sharon could relate. She herself had recently been arrested
- 24:24Speaker 1: for something even more ridiculous than pilfering toilet tries, busted
- 24:28Speaker 1: on a train in Italy for the offense of wearing
- 24:30Speaker 1: a short dress that was a little too short. Someone
- 24:34Speaker 1: should tell the Italian cops that the societal norms were
- 24:37Speaker 1: shifting thirteen million women in the world on the pill
- 24:41Speaker 1: sex and the Single Girls selling millions, even if its
- 24:44Speaker 1: author couldn't say the word sex on television. And if
- 24:47Speaker 1: you weren't prepared for all that, Grandpa, then buckle up
- 24:50Speaker 1: for the Valley of the Dolls, which hit the cinemas
- 24:52Speaker 1: that December.
- 24:53Speaker 2: It was the sixties. People could go where they wanted
- 24:56Speaker 2: to go, do what they wanted to do.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Less, of course, they were Cass. Something about Cass's bus
- 25:03Speaker 1: just didn't sit right with Sharon. Her arrest in nineteen
- 25:07Speaker 1: sixty seven was for a minute, anyway, all anyone back
- 25:10Speaker 1: home in the States could talk about even more than
- 25:13Speaker 1: Sharon's skimpy outfits and Valley of the Dolls. It would
- 25:17Speaker 1: remain one of America's most infamous busts from the world
- 25:20Speaker 1: of pop stardom until two years later in nineteen sixty nine,
- 25:24Speaker 1: when another arrest for the murder of Cass, Elliott's loyal
- 25:28Speaker 1: and sympathetic friend, would nearly eradicate Cass's seemingly innocent bus
- 25:33Speaker 1: from the pop consciousness. All right, guys, make sure you
- 25:38Speaker 1: are subscribed to Hollywood Land on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or
- 25:42Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcast. Next week we have our
- 25:44Speaker 1: episode on Robin Williams coming your way, and you're not
- 25:47Speaker 1: gonna want to miss that, all right, disgrace ampod at
- 25:50Speaker 1: gmail dot com. You got anything you want to get
- 25:51Speaker 1: off your chest, send me an email, Christopher easily writes
- 25:54Speaker 1: in short and sweet the way I like it was
- 25:56Speaker 1: Mama Cass doing freak offs before, did he No? But
- 26:02Speaker 1: there was some I believe, some really really gruesome shit
- 26:07Speaker 1: going on, and uh yeah, I'm reading this email in part,
- 26:10Speaker 1: because if you have not heard these episodes yet, what
- 26:13Speaker 1: are you waiting for? Get in there. Okay, you're not
- 26:16Speaker 1: going to be disappointed. This one comes from Jim Greenhow
- 26:22Speaker 1: who writes saying, Hey, love your pods, Jake. I think
- 26:24Speaker 1: I came across your podcast while listening to Karina Longworst podcast.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I don't really remember, but I have been listening NonStop
- 26:30Speaker 1: to both pods every day. Your pods make my day
- 26:34Speaker 1: go so much faster. My favorite episodes so far are
- 26:37Speaker 1: James Keen, Dennis Hopper, Drew Barrymore, etcetera, etcetera. I did
- 26:40Speaker 1: namefuse said Vicious goes hones say, I think a big
- 26:43Speaker 1: part of what makes your pod so successful, and then
- 26:46Speaker 1: he goes on to say very nice things about my voice.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I want to get to this part of the email here.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Jim goes on to say, I do have one subject
- 26:54Speaker 1: for you that I think you could do a real
- 26:56Speaker 1: deep dive into Aero Flynn and his son Sean Flynn.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I don't think they've ever even found Sean Flynn's body
- 27:02Speaker 1: in Vietnam or Cambodia. And then there's the rumors about
- 27:05Speaker 1: Errol being either a spy or a Nazi sympathizer and
- 27:08Speaker 1: the young girls. Of course, Well take care and I'll
- 27:11Speaker 1: keep posting the links to your pods on my social media.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I read this gym because it's so on topic. For
- 27:17Speaker 1: today's bonus episode of After Party Again, we've hit on
- 27:20Speaker 1: all these books.
- 27:21Speaker 2: That Errol Flynn autobiography. It's called My Life. It's something
- 27:26Speaker 2: very basic like that. I have. I think I have
- 27:29Speaker 2: a first edition of that. I have a really really
- 27:31Speaker 2: old copy that was very hard to get and one
- 27:35Speaker 2: of those things that's out of print, and it's out
- 27:37Speaker 2: of print for a reason. The stuff in that book
- 27:40Speaker 2: is fucking crazy, and one I didn't know anything about
- 27:44Speaker 2: his son. Either this is or the Nazi sympathizing spy stuff.
- 27:50Speaker 2: This sounds fantastic. I'm pumped.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And to be honest, I haven't even read ero Flynn's
- 27:55Speaker 1: autobiography yet. I've skimmed it. It's the type of thing
- 27:59Speaker 1: you can just pick up and get pulled into really
- 28:01Speaker 1: any page and just your jaw will be on the floor.
- 28:04Speaker 1: We got into the Errol Flynn Bundy Boys story in
- 28:07Speaker 1: the Drew Barrymore episode because her grandfather was involved in it,
- 28:13Speaker 1: and that's the Hollywood Land episode. Just this story is
- 28:17Speaker 1: fucking nuts. And we also got into it more explicitly
- 28:22Speaker 1: in the Marilyn Monroe episodes because Marilyn was present during
- 28:28Speaker 1: this event or during the telling of this event. Yeah,
- 28:31Speaker 1: one of Errol Flynn's many sort of like party tricks. Anyhow,
- 28:37Speaker 1: Errol's influence so notorious Jim that he's popped up in
- 28:41Speaker 1: those two episodes, but have not yet done one on
- 28:43Speaker 1: him for Hollywood Land, But I will.
- 28:45Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now, Oh man, it's.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Kind of dreary here, and I just have this image
- 28:50Speaker 1: of me like curled up in my comfy chair over
- 28:54Speaker 1: here with that Errol Flynn book for the rest of
- 28:56Speaker 1: the afternoon, just reading it away. Then it gonna happen.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Though I got to finish this episode. We'll get some
- 29:02Speaker 1: reviews to check out right here. You know why we
- 29:03Speaker 1: do the reviews because the reviews help the show grow.
- 29:07Speaker 1: You guys helped me out with the reviews on Apple
- 29:09Speaker 1: Podcasts and Spotify. If I read it here, you guys
- 29:12Speaker 1: get in touch and I get you some merch. That's
- 29:14Speaker 1: how it works. And again, I don't just do this
- 29:16Speaker 1: to be self congratulatory, although I don't care how shameless
- 29:19Speaker 1: this is. This is what helps the show grow. It
- 29:22Speaker 1: is one of the number one engines for driving discovery
- 29:25Speaker 1: is activity on the apps surrounding the podcast. So if

- 29:33Speaker 2: A little review. A little love goes a real.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Long way, and it's easy and it's cheap, and it's
- 29:38Speaker 1: a way for you to support the show, and I'm
- 29:39Speaker 1: super super appreciative of it. This review on Apple Podcasts
- 29:44Speaker 1: comes from podcast fan Queen, who writes, Hey, my new binge.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Someone asked me if I had listened to the Maryland episodes. Oh, there,
- 29:51Speaker 1: we got Marilyn Monroe of this podcast, so of course
- 29:54Speaker 1: I ran to listen because she's my personal icon. And
- 29:57Speaker 1: now I am hooked all caps. It's like talking with
- 29:59Speaker 1: my my friend. We are obviously the same generation. So
- 30:02Speaker 1: everything Jake says is like, Yes, I love the narration,
- 30:05Speaker 1: I love the commentary, I love the melotron.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I'm just obsessed. I'm telling everyone I know to listen.
