Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Lately control and they give that and get so.
- 0:11Speaker 2: That so.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Away.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, I'm that this is Andy and we are from
- 0:25Speaker 1: the rock fad as December falls.
- 0:29Speaker 4: How would you describe us? I don't know how I
- 0:33Speaker 4: describe us. I just say, hey, we're an.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Old rock bad I had a.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Live show for you all, especially with the new album
- 0:41Speaker 5: that's all over the place.
- 0:44Speaker 1: That is no genre.
- 0:47Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, that's awesome, Thank you so much. You
- 0:50Speaker 6: guys have just released Angry Cry, which I'm loving. By
- 0:53Speaker 6: the way, can you tell us a bit more about
- 0:55Speaker 6: why this song felt right to release right now so
- 0:59Speaker 6: soon we'll not so scene, but just after the live album.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Okay, so this one was we really thought it let
- 1:09Speaker 1: the fans know that we may we may possibly be
- 1:12Speaker 1: delving into sort of like some new genres because Angry
- 1:15Speaker 1: Car was a little bit different compared to our last album,
- 1:19Speaker 1: i'd say, and also just the meaning behind it as well.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I feel like it was time to get that one
- 1:25Speaker 1: out to let people know that, hey, we're all dealing
- 1:29Speaker 1: with ship still.
- 1:31Speaker 5: So like it has been a rough year.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Like yeah, it's been a rough year, and I think
- 1:37Speaker 2: that's definitely bled into a songwriting well, songwriting and the
- 1:43Speaker 2: live album just came out, which was like a celebration
- 1:45Speaker 2: of the last record, and it very much felt like we.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Kind of wanted the live album to sort of be well,
- 1:51Speaker 1: not not closure because obviously John Club will never it
- 1:54Speaker 1: will never be over a line.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Under that period and going straight to the next ear
- 2:00Speaker 2: like a month later, I just felt like a cool
- 2:03Speaker 2: moved fall.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and angry it does. It feels like a new thing. Yeah,
- 2:08Speaker 4: it feels like a new style of song.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But everyone, everyone seems to be loving it so far,
- 2:12Speaker 1: So hopefully we've maybe the right call there.
- 2:16Speaker 6: Oh definitely I reckon. So is Angry Kui a sign
- 2:20Speaker 6: of what's to come on a new album? Or do
- 2:22Speaker 6: all the songs sound wildly different from each other?
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think we've written for the first time in our careers,
- 2:29Speaker 2: we've walked into an album without a real plan in
- 2:32Speaker 2: terms of right this is like sonically what we're aiming for.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We've actually spent more time in the studio on this
- 2:38Speaker 2: one than we have with any record, our producers telling
- 2:40Speaker 2: up the dates. We've spent over a month in the studio,
- 2:44Speaker 2: whereas like every other, every other album's felt a lot
- 2:47Speaker 2: more rushed because of like budget restrictions. So like, typically
- 2:50Speaker 2: how we've done things in the past is will write
- 2:52Speaker 2: a bunch of songs, then do pre pro and then
- 2:55Speaker 2: the actual recording of it gets squeezed into as little
- 2:58Speaker 2: time as visically possible to save as much money, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: because we're an independent band, there's no label, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: funding everything ourselves, whereas this time we really spend the
- 3:09Speaker 2: time just crafting something that we would be really proud of.
- 3:13Speaker 2: And I think the results wise is a bit all
- 3:16Speaker 2: over place genre wise, like there's there's a little bit
- 3:19Speaker 2: in there for everyone, I think, like.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You know, but they all work together, they all work together.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Yeah, oh nice, And you mentioned something before that you
- 3:30Speaker 6: guys are an independent band. Is that the same for
- 3:33Speaker 6: this album as well? I imagine that you guys have
- 3:36Speaker 6: not gone with a record label.
- 3:38Speaker 5: No, we still l still.
- 3:43Speaker 6: And it must be quite liberating as well to be
- 3:46Speaker 6: like that and to be successful, you know, doing it
- 3:50Speaker 6: yourselves and not depending on labels, and that it must
- 3:55Speaker 6: be yeah, quite liberating, feel quite liberating.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yes, it's I think it's something that it has its
- 4:00Speaker 4: frozens cons So yeah, I mean, you know, there's too
- 4:05Speaker 4: sad to recoin, isn't there?
- 4:06Speaker 1: But I always choose to see the positives of it
- 4:09Speaker 1: because I flip in love that we're independent. I'm so
- 4:12Speaker 1: proud of us. But we've got this far and we're
- 4:14Speaker 1: doing all of this stuff as an independent band, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's not like we've had a label in the past
- 4:20Speaker 1: and they've helped us, but like we've literally built this
- 4:23Speaker 1: thing from the ground up. So I love that, But
- 4:27Speaker 1: obviously it comes with hindrances as in, like we do
- 4:30Speaker 1: struggle with like getting support slots and like things like that,
- 4:33Speaker 1: don't we Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 4:35Speaker 4: I like.
- 4:37Speaker 5: There's like better, There's lots of pros and cons to
- 4:39Speaker 5: having a label.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I think the benefits of having labels involved early on
- 4:45Speaker 2: is that it opens a lot of doors that necessarily
- 4:48Speaker 2: wouldn't have been opened for you at that time because
- 4:51Speaker 2: you haven't earned it yet. And that's really where we've struggled,
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know, trying to build this from the ground up.
- 4:57Speaker 2: A lot of industry not knowing who we are. A
- 4:59Speaker 2: lot of are the bands really not knowing who we are,
- 5:01Speaker 2: because you know, we built up our own little DIY
- 5:03Speaker 2: bubble and that's been amazing built you know, playing to
- 5:07Speaker 2: nearly a thousand caps in.
- 5:08Speaker 5: The UK, has been sick.
- 5:10Speaker 4: I think when you're when you've been sort of as
- 5:12Speaker 4: fiercely independent as we have been, it's just a case
- 5:15Speaker 4: of you constantly have to prove yes, you constantly have
- 5:19Speaker 4: to prove that you've done it and prove that you
- 5:21Speaker 4: can do it again and again, whereas I feel like
- 5:25Speaker 4: you don't have to do that as much when you do.
- 5:27Speaker 1: When you do have the labels behind you backing you.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But but then in some ways it's it's flip and
- 5:33Speaker 1: awesome though, because we have developed such an amazing community of.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Like as December Fours fans, Like I know everyone's going
- 5:40Speaker 4: to say, oh, my fans are the best, my fans
- 5:42Speaker 4: are the best, but honestly, our fans are genuinely the best.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They are so cool. Yeah, And I feel like the
- 5:51Speaker 1: reason we have that closeness with them and able to
- 5:54Speaker 1: have formed such this Titanning community is because we've been
- 5:57Speaker 1: independent this whole time, and they know we've been independent
- 6:00Speaker 1: the whole time, so they feel like they have something
- 6:02Speaker 1: sort of rally behind And yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Definitely, you guys have built it literally from the ground up,
- 6:08Speaker 6: and even your past albums as well as well have
- 6:11Speaker 6: been recorded in home studios.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Is that right, Yes, so well, yeah, first album it
- 6:22Speaker 2: was basically the garage in London, wasn't it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Well, Join the Club was actually recorded here.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Oh that's true.
- 6:28Speaker 2: We did record but it wasn't like mixed here, so like,
- 6:31Speaker 2: I don't think that really counts. We did, We did
- 6:34Speaker 2: record a lot of Join Club here except the drums.
- 6:37Speaker 2: That was actually a great experience though. I really loved that. Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 2: if any bands can just record at home in their
- 6:43Speaker 2: living room, highly recommend just wake up, make a cup
- 6:46Speaker 2: of tea, playing with the cats and then recording a song.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Pretty sick.
- 6:51Speaker 6: That's awesome and really from a fan perspective, it's it
- 6:54Speaker 6: feels really authentic to hear a band that you know
- 6:57Speaker 6: still does di y because I yes, it may be
- 7:00Speaker 6: a little bit more common nowadays, but it's certainly something
- 7:03Speaker 6: that you don't see a lot of. And you're right about,
- 7:06Speaker 6: you know, the fan base being right behind you guys,
- 7:08Speaker 6: because just encouraging you to keep doing what you're doing.
- 7:11Speaker 6: And yeah, it's awesome. You guys have played at some
- 7:15Speaker 6: of the biggest festivals and have the biggest festivals in
- 7:18Speaker 6: the world and have gained a huge following, do you guys,
- 7:21Speaker 6: Pinch yourself and how do you wrap your head around
- 7:25Speaker 6: how crazy that is?
- 7:28Speaker 1: Every day I don't think we'll love would quite.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Go no no, Like so this year, for example, being
- 7:36Speaker 2: invited to play slam Look main stage and two Thousand
- 7:38Speaker 2: Trees main stage in the UK, which are two of
- 7:40Speaker 2: the biggest rock festivals, and like, well.
- 7:42Speaker 1: We've been We've been attending Slamdink Festival since we were
- 7:45Speaker 1: like fifteen sixteen, and to be to be playing main stage,
- 7:50Speaker 1: like even on the day, it's like my core memory
- 7:53Speaker 1: from playing Slamdok this year where I went out to
- 7:58Speaker 1: what who gives it? All of Myken rejects. Yes, we
- 8:01Speaker 1: went around a friend to go watch all American rejects.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So I was like, oh wow, like this this is massive,
- 8:06Speaker 1: isn't it. And Andrew literally turned around to me and went,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you literally played about like three hours ago, and I
- 8:12Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, I did. I absolutely did
- 8:15Speaker 1: do that. I don't think it clicked in my head
- 8:18Speaker 1: because from the stage, it seems like the stage seems
- 8:22Speaker 1: so much smaller when you're on it, and then when
- 8:24Speaker 1: you're looking at it, you're like, oh shit, this is
- 8:26Speaker 1: like a massive, huge thing that you've just done.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Yeah, I am Yeah, sorry, I was going to say
- 8:35Speaker 6: it was.
- 8:36Speaker 2: It was definitely a full circle moment for us playing
- 8:38Speaker 2: like Slammed on main stage because back in twenty eighteen
- 8:40Speaker 2: when were a little baby band, We've won a competition
- 8:43Speaker 2: to open open that festival just from one of the days,
- 8:46Speaker 2: and so like like five years later, playing main stage, well,
- 8:50Speaker 2: six years later playing main stage was definitely a big
- 8:55Speaker 2: It was crazy. It was a very nice, fulfilling circle
- 8:58Speaker 2: moment for us.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that's hectic. I can only imagine. Well I can't,
- 9:02Speaker 6: but I watch a lot of the slam Dunk festivals
- 9:05Speaker 6: here at home, and yeah, just do you guys get like,
- 9:10Speaker 6: were you really nervous obviously to play on stage to
- 9:13Speaker 6: that many people.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Or I feel like you're always nervous.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm nervous, Like I could play to like
- 9:19Speaker 1: two people and still be like no, Like so yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 1: i feel like you're asking for wrong now with me.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm about to go on stage.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I'm like, I feel like I'm about okay, I'm so nervous,
- 9:31Speaker 4: Like as soon as soon as our intro music, as
- 9:34Speaker 4: as soon as I take two steps on stage, I'm like, okay, cool,
- 9:37Speaker 4: I'm in adf bath mode.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I'm ready, but before I am a nervous wreck.
- 9:44Speaker 6: You're gracing our shores in February. Have you guys ever
- 9:47Speaker 6: been to Australia.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Never, I've never been. No, no, no, so excited?
- 9:53Speaker 6: Good good? That was my next question.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Two of my cousins live in Melbourne, so hopefully going
- 10:03Speaker 2: to be able to swing by and see those guys
- 10:05Speaker 2: in a minute in Melbourne. My last three have also
- 10:09Speaker 2: all moved to Melbourne.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I thought we moved to Sydney.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Melbourne.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Everyone's moving to.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Everyone's in Melbourne. Yeah, it's the spot.
- 10:19Speaker 2: One of our early support bands that we took out
- 10:21Speaker 2: in the UK for the Happier tour was a band
- 10:24Speaker 2: called They're Now the Hype. They were called three then
- 10:26Speaker 2: but they're now called the Hype and love those guys.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Hopefully going to be able to hook up with them.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And then red Hook you're knocking about.
- 10:35Speaker 4: We recently just played well we've just finished our tour
- 10:39Speaker 4: skin Dread and on one of those Red Hook came
- 10:42Speaker 4: on the show as well. So I went and sang
- 10:48Speaker 4: Mikayla's part in Pasta. So that was really fun and
- 10:51Speaker 4: it was it was so nice seeing those guys and
- 10:53Speaker 4: they were like yeah, hit us up when you get
- 10:55Speaker 4: to Sydney about yeah awesome.
- 10:58Speaker 6: So do you guys have any word on support x
- 11:00Speaker 6: then for your tour when you come here or you
- 11:03Speaker 6: kind of don't know yet.
- 11:04Speaker 5: We're still picking at the moment.
- 11:06Speaker 2: So I've had quite a lot of people, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 2: email us in and just be like, Yo, we'd love
- 11:14Speaker 2: to play with you guys, which is really nice because
- 11:15Speaker 2: like we've never been to Australia, so actually have like
- 11:18Speaker 2: so many Australian bands taking South and be like, yo,
- 11:20Speaker 2: take us out on because.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I did a feature on like Down and Outs, Yes
- 11:25Speaker 1: you did, and they were they were like, oh, if
- 11:28Speaker 1: you guys need the support, please hit us up. So
- 11:31Speaker 1: I just like sent it over to Ian like oh
- 11:33Speaker 1: we have we have an option here like yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 2: So I'm still deciding, but it's going to be good, awesome.
- 11:42Speaker 4: This is this is exactly why I loud to I'm
- 11:46Speaker 4: going to have things and I don't like, I don't
- 11:48Speaker 4: deal with this kind I don't know.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Don't worry, It's totally fine. What music do you guys
- 11:54Speaker 6: like to listen to yourselves? Is there any guilty pleasures?
- 11:57Speaker 6: Like do you like a bit of Britney spears occasionally
- 11:59Speaker 6: or anything like that.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I know you do.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I have a very eclectic take and we both do that.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Like you are absolutely obsessed with Chapel.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I am, yeah, but who is an obsive Chapel at
- 12:16Speaker 1: the moment?
- 12:17Speaker 6: You know?
- 12:18Speaker 5: That's true.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You listen to a lot of Carlie Ray Jabson I.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Do love I know I will Die on the Hill.
- 12:28Speaker 5: That call me Maybe is probably one of the best.
- 12:30Speaker 6: That's so.
- 12:34Speaker 5: But yeah, I think we're all very like all over.
- 12:37Speaker 4: The round and as in like even so Timmy, who
- 12:43Speaker 4: is out of a guitar player, like, I don't think
- 12:46Speaker 4: I've heard him listen to a rock song in like.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Two years more, he listens to his like sad Girl, Yeah, yeah,
- 12:56Speaker 3: sad Timmy's Jack, which is.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Hilarious because he's the one who rights like most like
- 13:02Speaker 4: head breakdowns.
- 13:06Speaker 6: I love that. Do you guys still have those side
- 13:08Speaker 6: jobs outside of the band?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Yes, and that is again probably a downside of being
- 13:15Speaker 2: an independent artist, like making making the money work to
- 13:19Speaker 2: do this full time has always.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Been a struggle, trying to get holiday days.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Yes, so I work as a music marketer on the side.
- 13:29Speaker 2: So I work with artists and management, helping them like
- 13:32Speaker 2: market music, market shows and stuff, which is very cool.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Both the boys though, are looking towards hopefully.
- 13:39Speaker 1: At the minute.
- 13:40Speaker 5: They both have office they both have office jobs, and
- 13:42Speaker 5: they're both trying to get out of it. Really wow.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's where that really like no one ever talked
- 13:47Speaker 2: about the stage of being a banned where everyone thinks
- 13:50Speaker 2: you've got tons of money because you're getting to a
- 13:51Speaker 2: relative level of success and quite there, and it sucks.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Because it's like, yeah, you may be bringing in a
- 13:58Speaker 1: little bit more money, but you'll spend be like double.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yes, and it's and you know, we're mid album creation
- 14:04Speaker 2: at the moment, so we've invested a huge amount of
- 14:06Speaker 2: money into this next album and obviously no, but it's
- 14:10Speaker 2: like this last month is a prime example. We've been
- 14:12Speaker 2: on tour with Skin Dread. For whatever reason, the touring
- 14:15Speaker 2: rooting has been much more like weekend based. It's been
- 14:17Speaker 2: like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Thursday Friday Saturday. But it's been
- 14:19Speaker 2: for like that for like a month. So we've been
- 14:21Speaker 2: going playing three shows, three shows a week, coming back
- 14:25Speaker 2: working a full time job, going back out at the weekends,
- 14:27Speaker 2: working a full time job, and we're all dead.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I think we're very happy that we're getting back to
- 14:34Speaker 1: like sort of a normal life schedule for like two
- 14:36Speaker 1: months and then and then.
- 14:38Speaker 2: We'll message and then it will start again, like eleven
- 14:42Speaker 2: hours yesterday and I felt amazing.
- 14:45Speaker 1: It was a great time. It was a great time.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Oh nice. And you guys obviously have put in four
- 14:52Speaker 6: time off over February when you're coming here, I hope, yeah, good.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Time off of that.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 2: So I actually quite like that we're only doing three
- 15:03Speaker 2: shows because it means that we can actually stay for
- 15:04Speaker 2: like a week and a half and then just enjoy, enjoy.
- 15:08Speaker 5: It's going to be nice, to be very fun.
- 15:12Speaker 1: We're getting very a couple of days before so that
- 15:14Speaker 1: hopefully we can We're probably not going to have but
- 15:19Speaker 1: we're going to try our goddamn best three awesome rock
- 15:23Speaker 1: shows and then chill for like a week. It's gonna
- 15:27Speaker 1: yeah nice.
- 15:30Speaker 6: What do you hope your songs and shows give to
- 15:33Speaker 6: your listeners when they leave?
- 15:37Speaker 1: I think my personally meet from a show.
- 15:41Speaker 4: So like I go to gigs as I can escape
- 15:43Speaker 4: from life, Like I don't want to go to a
- 15:44Speaker 4: gig and have like I'm not into I'm more I'm
- 15:49Speaker 4: very aware that there are lots of artists out there
- 15:51Speaker 4: who will like sort of talk about deep issues and
- 15:53Speaker 4: things on stage, and that's fine for them, But now
- 15:55Speaker 4: it's December four show.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I want to be an escape. I'm there for well.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I say this every time I go on stage, and
- 16:02Speaker 1: as a summerfore show is a party that everyone is
- 16:04Speaker 1: invited to, and that's the vibe I want from our shows.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Like I think even when we play, like on our
- 16:11Speaker 1: last Heideline tour, we played like a little acoustic song
- 16:13Speaker 1: halfway through and I was like, oh my god, it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: so slow, and.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Why not running around like crazy people for like a song?
- 16:23Speaker 4: But you know, I think that's always my aim.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I want.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I want people to feel just so engulfed in the
- 16:29Speaker 1: moment and like just just happy vibes all like all round, Like.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the biggest thing about this has always
- 16:36Speaker 2: been about connection, and I think that resonates with the music,
- 16:39Speaker 2: with the shows, and like that's the core tenant. It's
- 16:41Speaker 2: about connection with people like yeah, but you're not alone
- 16:44Speaker 2: whether and yeah, that's like that's why I love so
- 16:47Speaker 2: much about our fan base, like our Discord community, like
- 16:49Speaker 2: seeing so many people like link up and like make
- 16:52Speaker 2: friends and like go to shows together and they've just
- 16:55Speaker 2: met in our discord, you know, and it's just.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Such a beautiful thing.
- 16:58Speaker 4: No, it's it's always lovely because, like we we write
- 17:02Speaker 4: about a lot of very deep, deep issues, yea.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Topics, so we go back to what I'm looking for.
- 17:11Speaker 1: We write about a lot of deep topics, a lot,
- 17:14Speaker 1: a lot of mental health going on there, angry cry,
- 17:16Speaker 1: case and point. And but I feel like that gets
- 17:23Speaker 1: the fans to relate to it because they're like, oh, ship,
- 17:26Speaker 1: these people are going through the ship too, And if
