Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Katherine Firkin: US Correspondent says Boeing's astronauts are likely to remain stuck in space into July
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Katherine Perkin is in the States. Where's Katherine? Morning to you?
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hi there mate.
- 0:04Speaker 1: These astronauts, I got to say, when I initially was
- 0:06Speaker 1: going to go up, not that I was going to
- 0:08Speaker 1: go up, but these astronauts, and it was a Boeing,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you'd have to ask some serious questions. And now they're
- 0:12Speaker 1: up there and this sort of stuck.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yes, I think it was only a couple of weeks
- 0:17Speaker 2: ago we were talking about the spaceline of finally having
- 0:20Speaker 2: this success, successful mission, blasting off into space with these
- 0:24Speaker 2: two astronauts on board. But unfortunately they are pretty much
- 0:28Speaker 2: stuck up there for the moment. The mission was meant
- 0:31Speaker 2: to be just eight days long. Now we're being told
- 0:34Speaker 2: they probably won't be heading home until early next month
- 0:38Speaker 2: at the absolute soonest, and that's due to several issues
- 0:41Speaker 2: with this Boeing craft. They've had malfunctioning thrusters and a
- 0:45Speaker 2: series of helium leaks. What's a big problem for Boeing's
- 0:48Speaker 2: engineers is that these issues are occurring on what's called
- 0:51Speaker 2: the service module. It's essentially a little attachment that sits
- 0:55Speaker 2: at the bottom of the aircraft and it's a part
- 0:57Speaker 2: of the craft that will actually be jettisoned and discarded
- 1:00Speaker 2: before the capsule returns home. So if they don't fix
- 1:03Speaker 2: it now up in orbit, they're never going to get
- 1:06Speaker 2: a chance to actually see what's going wrong. And that's
- 1:09Speaker 2: even if they can bring the craft home. At this
- 1:11Speaker 2: point they don't know. So for the moment those astronauts
- 1:14Speaker 2: have stuck up there, we're being told they've got plenty
- 1:16Speaker 2: of supplies. Worst case, they can hitch a right on
- 1:19Speaker 2: SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, which is also attached to the International
- 1:23Speaker 2: Space Station. But certainly not the pr that Boeing would
- 1:28Speaker 2: have been wanting at the moment.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Exactly. I'm noting the Supreme Court for a busy today.
- 1:34Speaker 1: They've handed down some information on the abortion business. But
- 1:37Speaker 1: also earlier on today there's social media six ' three
- 1:40Speaker 1: What did they say?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, And it has been a busy time
- 1:44Speaker 2: for the Supreme Court. Essentially, this social media case was
- 1:48Speaker 2: all about free speech. Conservatives had challenged the Biden's administration's
- 1:52Speaker 2: efforts to really pressure social media companies into removing certain
- 1:56Speaker 2: posts that it deemed misinformation. Pretty much arose from the
- 2:01Speaker 2: time of COVID with a flood of contentious posts over
- 2:05Speaker 2: COVID nineteen and vaccines that Biden administration insisted they had
- 2:09Speaker 2: the right to get misinformation removed, Conservatives that it was
- 2:13Speaker 2: breaching free speech. Basically, no harms being done is the
- 2:17Speaker 2: ruling from the Supreme Court. But this, of course all
- 2:20Speaker 2: comes just a day before tomorrow's big presidential debate, so
- 2:24Speaker 2: it is a bit of a win for Biden as
- 2:26Speaker 2: we go into that one. I'm not sure how excited
- 2:29Speaker 2: we really are about this debate. There's no studio audience,
- 2:32Speaker 2: there's the ability to mute the candidate's microphone, so I
- 2:35Speaker 2: don't think it's going to be as hot and tempered
- 2:37Speaker 2: as we've seen in the past. And if we don't
- 2:39Speaker 2: all fall asleep, it might give us a bit of
- 2:42Speaker 2: a look into the next nineteen weeks coming up to
- 2:45Speaker 2: this big election.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Catch up with you, sir, Catherine. Appreciate it very much,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Catherine Ferkin, I think for more from News Talk sed B.
