- 0:15Welcome to Just Be True, a soul -led podcast.
- 0:19I am your host, Summer, and I am thrilled that
- 0:22we are here together today to discuss a subject
- 0:26that is near and dear and very personal to me.
- 0:29It's self -acceptance, the freedom to accept
- 0:32who you are unconditionally, right? I mean, this
- 0:37can be very personal and it's universal at the
- 0:40same time. It's all about learning to see yourself
- 0:44with kindness, about coming home to who you are
- 0:47beneath all the expectations, fears and stories
- 0:51that you've been told. So truly allowing yourself
- 0:54to be true to you and Be within your own self,
- 0:59right? I mean, that's amazing thing to consider
- 1:03and start to doing. So let's start with the illusion
- 1:06of perfection, right? How many of you have changed
- 1:12your dress, the way you dress, your hairstyle,
- 1:16the way you act or claim that you like something
- 1:21or dislike something because of someone else?
- 1:24because of someone else's opinion of you, because
- 1:27someone else's expectations of you. I know I
- 1:31have. And for much of my life, I've tried to
- 1:35become better. Better at fitting in, better at
- 1:39pleasing others, better at hiding the parts of
- 1:43myself that I thought were just too much. Like
- 1:46too much for other people to accept. I measured
- 1:50my worth on how others saw me. I was doing such
- 1:55a disservice to myself when I did. For me, this
- 2:01mostly took place in my spiritual gifts. Me hiding
- 2:07my gifts and not truly owning them so that others
- 2:11wouldn't think that I was crazy or weird. Well,
- 2:15guess what? I'm weird and maybe a little bit
- 2:18crazy, but that's perfectly fine. I mean it took
- 2:22me a long time to truly step into owning my spiritual
- 2:28gifts. I was brought up in a Southern Baptist
- 2:33home and spirituality just wasn't spoken about.
- 2:38You know the gift of mediumship was not something
- 2:43that was shared with me. I didn't know what a
- 2:45psychic was until I was in my 30s oh my goodness,
- 2:49and I do it now for a living go figure Right
- 2:53I did not and I was always told to Do right fit
- 2:59in make sure that you look a certain way to be
- 3:03accepted by a certain way oh my gosh, I remember
- 3:07growing up that We had to look perfect when we
- 3:12steps outside of that The hair had to be perfect.
- 3:17The clothes had to be perfect. Everything had
- 3:19to be perfect. But inside the house, it was a
- 3:23total mess, right? But we showed a perfect side
- 3:27of ourselves so others would accept us. So others
- 3:31would, you know, have a different opinion of
- 3:35us. I'm going to tell you, I am so much happier
- 3:41now that I am living my true authentic self.
- 3:45And I have set aside the expectations of others
- 3:48and of pleasing. I am no longer in the game of
- 3:52pleasing. Look, it is what it is, right? I mean,
- 3:56if you're living your life to please others,
- 3:58you're living for others and you're not living
- 4:00for you. Another area that I also did this in
- 4:05was how I dressed. I had such a difficult time
- 4:10with fashion and trying to fit in. I never really
- 4:14fit in. And when I did dress to fit in, I felt
- 4:18awkward. I felt like somewhat of a misfit. Like
- 4:23it just, I was wearing clothes that belonged
- 4:25to somebody else and not to me. Well today, I
- 4:30dress how I want to. I don't worry about other
- 4:33people's opinion because their opinion is just
- 4:36that. their opinion and it's none of my business
- 4:39with someone else's things or how somebody else
- 4:42believes right especially about me I'm the one
- 4:46that has to live with my choices I'm the one
- 4:48that has to answer to the things that I do and
- 4:51I'm the one that has to wear my clothes I'm the
- 4:54one that has to be comfortable so guess what
- 4:56I go out of my way to be comfortable and I make
- 5:00sure that whatever I'm wearing suits me and my
- 5:03personality I don't care about others, right?
- 5:07You gotta be comfortable. How many ladies have
- 5:10you worn those high heel shoes just to look cute
- 5:15so somebody would think that you were cute? Right?
- 5:18You did them for fashion. Did you do it because
- 5:21it was you? Maybe so. And great. That's absolutely
- 5:24wonderful. But did you do it to get somebody
- 5:27else's attention? Did you do it to get somebody
- 5:30else's approval? You know if so there's a better
- 5:33way of doing that look I wear wear shoes My favorite
- 5:38shoes are the vibram five -fingered shoes the
- 5:41ones where all your toes have a little slot in
- 5:43them People laugh at me all the time. They tell
- 5:47me they're the weirdest shoes. They've ever seen
- 5:48but guess what? They're the most comfortable
- 5:50issues that I have and I wear them daily And
- 5:54I don't care literally. I don't care what anybody
- 5:58thinks why it's my feet shoes. I do what I want
- 6:02to do because I'm gonna be self -acceptance of
- 6:05me, right? I'm not gonna care about other people.
- 6:10I'm gonna tell you during this process of fitting
- 6:12in I lost connection with who I truly was and
- 6:16I'm sure you do too. Maybe you felt that too
- 6:20much pressure to live up to someone else's version
- 6:22of you. a silent exhaustion of pretending to
- 6:28be what the world expects instead of you just
- 6:31being what your soul desires. And when you can
- 6:34step into being and living what your soul desires,
- 6:39everything is simpler. Everything is simpler,
- 6:43right? When you let go of other people's expectations
- 6:47of you, you free yourself. You really do, right?
- 6:53So, you know, self -acceptance isn't about becoming
- 6:58perfect. It's about releasing the need to be
- 7:02perfect. It's about truly being you unapologetically.
- 7:08Truly being you unapologetically. So for me,
- 7:15there came a point in my journey when I realized
- 7:19I couldn't keep chasing approval. I mean I spent
- 7:23years living up to everyone else's expectations
- 7:26and yet I still felt unfulfilled and I felt like
- 7:31I was living a lie and not being true to me and
- 7:36at a point I kind of like lost who I was you
- 7:39know and then you really feel kind of lost and
- 7:42then I finally stopped and when I allow myself
- 7:45to just be that's when I begin to feel peace.
- 7:50I began to feel peace inside, right? The true
- 7:55healing came the moment I started honoring my
- 7:59truth instead of hiding from it. I mean, yeah,
- 8:03you can go on hiding from it from here on out,
- 8:06but you're never gonna truly know who you are
- 8:09and anyone around you is not gonna know truly
- 8:13who you are. You're only going to see the part
- 8:17of you that is living up to their expectations.
- 8:20And that's not helpful for you or them. I mean,
- 8:25I'll be honest. This sounds a whole lot simpler
- 8:30than what it actually is. It took practice to
- 8:35do what felt right. It took courage to allow
- 8:39people in the world to see the real me. And when
- 8:44you show up true to yourself, you also show vulnerability.
- 8:55Now, however, I must say being vulnerable does
- 9:00not mean you're weak. It does not show your weaknesses.
- 9:03It is a strength and a courage and can be extremely
- 9:08powerful. I think the definition or the meaning
- 9:15around vulnerability is misleading. When you
- 9:20can show someone your vulnerable side, you're
- 9:25showing them that you're human. What I've learned
- 9:28from vulnerability, sorry, kind of tongue twister
- 9:34there, is that people respect and look up to
- 9:38you more for being vulnerable. And it shows everyone
- 9:42else that you are human too, that you're not
- 9:46this some perfect machine that doesn't ever make
- 9:49mistakes or doesn't have feelings, right? The
- 9:52first time that I showed vulnerability, I was
- 9:55a manager and I showed it to my team. And it
- 9:59actually helped bring me and my team members
- 10:03closer together. Because yes, even though that
- 10:06they needed to follow directions for what I gave
- 10:08them to do, and that they had to live up to,
- 10:12you know, they had to do what was expected of
- 10:14them. They still understood that I had emotions
- 10:18and I had feelings too. And that showing my vulnerability
- 10:22side let them see the human part of me, not just
- 10:26the supervisor part of me. So, you know, embrace
- 10:30that vulnerability and let it show through and
- 10:33let people see the true, real you. And this is
- 10:37a part of self -acceptance as well. You know,
- 10:41so take steps each and every day to show and
- 10:47to step into your true, authentic self and own
- 10:51your self -acceptance. I mean, own it and discover
- 10:56the moment When you can whisper to yourself,
- 11:00I don't have to prove anything. I am already
- 11:04enough. I'm going to say that one more time.
- 11:10I don't have to prove anything. I am already
- 11:15enough. And when you can say that and believe
- 11:20it in that moment, you'll be able to finally
- 11:25breathe again. You'll be able to let it all go.
- 11:29Who cares what other people think? Right? I mean,
- 11:34truly, you know, who cares about one person or
- 11:39that small group of people? You may not even
- 11:42have to live with those individuals the rest
- 11:44of your life. You have to live with you for the
- 11:46rest of your life. You know, nobody else is going
- 11:51to be around you from birth to death except for
- 11:53you every single moment. So, you know, what does
- 12:00self acceptance really mean? It doesn't mean
- 12:03that you stop growing or learning It means that
- 12:06you love yourself through the process It means
- 12:09holding compassion for your past self gratitude
- 12:12for your present self and hope for what you're
- 12:16still becoming Because you will continue to grow
- 12:21Through this whole process, you know, I think
- 12:24life is a is a continual Growth and continuing
- 12:28looking at ourselves and seeing how we can be
- 12:32truly authentic to ourself how we can accept
- 12:36ourselves and how we can Step into that space
- 12:41of unconditional love everywhere right so You
- 12:48know you're still becoming And when you look
- 12:50in the mirror instead of seeing flaws or mistakes
- 12:53you begin to see a soul Strong, wise, beautifully
- 12:58imperfect. We're not meant to be perfect. We
- 13:04are meant to be loved, and we are meant to be
- 13:07self -accepted. When you realize you don't have
- 13:12to fix your reflection, you only have to love
- 13:16it. Love it open -heartedly and with unconditional
- 13:20love. It will change your life. I promise you
- 13:26So I would like to invite you to take a challenge
- 13:33and This is something I would like for you to
- 13:37do every single day until you feel that it's
- 13:41no longer needed Right, and I still do it today.
- 13:45Now. I don't do it every single day But I still
- 13:49do it from time to time, and it's a beautiful
- 13:53reminder, right? So what you need to do is you
- 13:58stand in front of a mirror, and when you first
- 14:01do it, like be fully clothed, stand in front
- 14:05of a mirror, look into your own eyes, like literally
- 14:08look, look into your own eyes, right? That's
- 14:12the seat of the soul. And say to yourself out
- 14:17loud, I see you. I love you. Thank you for being
- 14:25exactly who you are. Yep, you'll say it out loud
- 14:32to yourself, eye to eye. I see you. I love you.
- 14:39And thank you for being exactly who you are.
- 14:44Now as you do it, notice the emotions that rise
- 14:47up. and allow them to flow. It doesn't matter
- 14:51if you find yourself in tears, laughing, or feeling
- 14:54overwhelmed with love. Don't judge those emotions.
- 15:00Just let them be seen and sit with them. You
- 15:04might feel like you need to journal. You might
- 15:07feel like you need to do a vlog for it. Whatever
- 15:12you need to do, feel free to do so. But this
- 15:19is what self -acceptance is. It feels like a
- 15:22gentle, raw, honest, and real emotion. Now, after
- 15:32you've done it for a while, I would like for
- 15:36you to step it up a little bit and do it with
- 15:40no clothes on. Look at your full body. Embrace
- 15:44the full body of you. say those same things I
- 15:50see you I love you and thank you for being exactly
- 15:57who you are and you are perfect in every way
- 16:03now I promise it's not gonna be easy it's not
- 16:12gonna be easy but it's gonna be worth it If you
- 16:17stick through this, every day you will change.
- 16:22You will change how you feel about yourself,
- 16:26which in return will change how the world sees
- 16:28you, and will offer you the ability to fully
- 16:34accept who you are, the perfect imperfection
- 16:40in which you are, right? So this journey of self
- 16:46-acceptance isn't about becoming someone new
- 16:49it's about remembering who you are It's about
- 16:53learning to just be true You know, that's how
- 16:59I came up with the with the name of my business
- 17:03and The lead of this podcast just be true is
- 17:07learning to be truly who you are and accepting
- 17:11who you truly are I mean it's a beautiful gift
- 17:15and one that only you can give yourself because
- 17:19when you honor who you are you create a space
- 17:22for everything meant for you to flow into life
- 17:27effortlessly, naturally, and divinely. So I hope
- 17:34this message resonated with you. I invite you
- 17:38to read my full blog The power of self -acceptance
- 17:42and healing is on my website. As you can see,
