• 0:30
Speaker 1: Maybe one day Coming up, richard Tomlin, apex Auto Works.
• 0:34
Speaker 1: We're going to talk about going from carburetor to fuel injection as long as I don't hear myself back while we're on the air, we're also going to talk about hill climbing as well.
• 0:53
Speaker 1: We'll have the upcoming events calendar Mars reviews, the new Buick Encore, the bottom of the hour.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: We talk about high school auto enthusiasts and a big car show.
• 1:04
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: That sounds like fun.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Plus, you'll hear the stories making automotive news headlines.
• 1:09
Speaker 1: Howdy Along with Mike out of this world.
• 1:11

• 1:13
Speaker 1: We always need more.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Jeff Zeekin, I'm Don Armstrong and you're not, thank goodness, amen to that.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: You don't want this lifestyle.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: I can tell you that right now.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: Thank you very much for joining us.
• 1:27
Speaker 1: It's good to be back from.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, let's get some cheese curds.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Yeah, you have any.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: I did not have any cheese curds while I was there.
• 1:35
  Speaker 1: I just didn't have time.
• 1:36
Speaker 1: I was there for a very short period of time.
• 1:38
Speaker 1: I flew into Chicago after a frantic stop in Tulsa for a change of planes at Tulsa Airport.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: It's pretty darn nice.
• 1:50
Speaker 3: Why do they change in Tulsa Something on the plane on the way?
• 1:53
Speaker 1: No, no, no, no.
• 1:54
  Speaker 1: I had miles.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: I used miles instead of cash money, and so there are different flights for cash, for rewards, then there are miles.
• 2:05
Speaker 1: So this particular flight I wanted to get there.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: When I got there and it stopped in Tulsa to let me off the plane, to change planes to the next gate, and so that's what.
• 2:17
Speaker 3: I've been in and out of the Tulsa Airport.
• 2:19
Speaker 3: Not a bad little airport, it's very nice.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, I would recommend it.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: I've always liked Tulsa.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I've only been there a couple of times, but there's something about the size of the city.
• 2:29
Speaker 3: When you look at, tulsa is the modern city in Oklahoma.
• 2:34
Speaker 3: Oklahoma City is kind of the cow town.
• 2:36
Speaker 3: Tulsa is the more metropolitan town.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: So, anyway, so change planes stayed there for about an hour and then took off and went to Chicago, and Ford Motor Company, I'm glad to say, was very gracious in supplying me with a Ford Broncos sport to go from Chicago O'Hare up to Jamesville, wisconsin, where my cousin lives.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: Very cool, there was a big celebration of a 70th birthday up there, so I was invited to their what up party.
• 3:03
Speaker 1: Oh, happy birthday, ben.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: There had to be at least 60 people there, that's not yeah.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: And as the night grew on and you know, people scattered, went home and ran out of liquor?
• 3:14
Speaker 1: Oh no, there was none of that.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: There was none of that.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: But they all wound up not me, believe it or not because I was too pooped to party anymore.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: They all wound up in the basement.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: And what a party it was.
• 3:28
Speaker 1: There was dancing going on, and all that because I could hear it.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: I was the bedroom above, but it was tons of fun, great fun.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: Had some little tours of Jamesville and the old GM assembly plant there in Jamesville.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: That my mother used to work for?
• 3:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much Not the city but the out there where the plant was.
• 3:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, but anyway, on the way up there I passed Belvedere, illinois and the Belvedere Stalantis assembly plant that currently has no business.
• 3:59
  Speaker 3: Another ghost town.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: Another ghost town there, which is, you know, it's funny because I've never been a UAW fan and we're going to get into that talk later on.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: But when it comes to you know, people working at these plants, you really don't give it a second thought.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: But there are thousands of people that either work there or are in the supply chain that supports that plant.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: And to see a plant that size and these things are huge We'll see these Uh, new warehouses going up for Amazon around town.
• 4:31
Speaker 1: Oh no, this, these plants can't they kill that.
• 4:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, acreage is what it was in the past.
• 4:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta have all the land.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: And to see the size of these plants and nobody working there, it's really sad.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: All right, well, we'll get onto that uh boat later on, but in the meantime and in between time, we bring on Richard Tomlin, apex Auto Works down in Alvine, texas, alvine, and uh, richard's going to fix my Corvette here in the next month, uh, because it has a battery drain and we're going to fix that.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: Richard is, I'm not, I'm just going to take him to problem.
• 5:06
Speaker 1: Richard, it's good to see you this morning and thanks so much for joining us.
• 5:11
  Speaker 4: Good morning guys.
• 5:12
Speaker 1: Well, um, I see you got a little rain down there, little cloud cover going on.
• 5:17
  Speaker 4: Oh, it's beautiful.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: Uh, something we hadn't seen in a while right.
• 5:20
  Speaker 1: Yeah, you're wearing a jacket.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: Is it that cool?
• 5:22
Speaker 1: No, no, no, no jacket.
• 5:24
  Speaker 3: No jacket.
• 5:24
Speaker 3: Well, you know it's in the eighties.
• 5:29
Speaker 3: You're going to have to put a jacket on.
• 5:31
  Speaker 3: It's not 105 anymore.
• 5:33
Speaker 4: I came from a little further north of uh I 40 than most, so this is a hot year round down here.
• 5:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly Cool looking C 10 there behind you with the cowl hood and the fancy wheels and the hub camp dishes on it.
• 5:47
Speaker 4: It has been a insanely fun project.
• 5:49
Speaker 4: Um, and that's kind of what led to the topic of chat and today about fuel injection, the carburetor swap I mean this one came in was for full suspension, so it's all QA, one suspension front to back.
• 6:00
  Speaker 4: It's amazing.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: And we did a motor swap, three 83 small block and he wanted to go from carbureted fuel injection.
• 6:06
Speaker 4: It's like, okay, not a big deal.
• 6:07
Speaker 4: We've done it a couple of times.
• 6:09
Speaker 4: But, uh, we started working with a new company, f I tech, f I tech, um by tech basically, and they've got a new system that requires four wires.
• 6:19
Speaker 4: Now, granted, you've got your wide band that has to go in, which is just O two sensor, um, a little higher priced O two sensor, and then fuel pressure regular.
• 6:27
Speaker 4: Otherwise it's four wires and the system's basically done.
• 6:30
Speaker 4: So I think it's something a lot of people have been scared about.
• 6:33
Speaker 4: Um, all related to the hot rod uh tour of Texas.
• 6:36
Speaker 4: Uh, running down with a uh carbureted motor has its challenges when we get up some of the altitude, but having a fuel injected one makes it super easy, super simple, and it's constantly tuning itself.
• 6:47
Speaker 4: So, let's say, you get into some weaker gas, um, it will actually tune itself out while you're driving, instead of you stopping and having changed jets beside the road.
• 6:56
  Speaker 4: Huh.
• 6:58
Speaker 1: Well, so how easy was it?
• 7:00
Speaker 1: How long did it take to pull the carburetor off of there and start the?
• 7:05
Speaker 1: And I assume that it is a carburetor replacement that goes on top of the manifold that's already there.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: Right, and the cool thing is they've actually made it look like a carburetor.
• 7:15
Speaker 4: So if you're just walking by and not paying attention, you're going to think it's a carbureted setup.
• 7:19
Speaker 4: Um, it's pretty amazing what they did.
• 7:23
Speaker 4: We stopped at SEMA and PRI and spoke with them a good little bit and that's why we jumped on their product for this project and, uh, it looked out pretty good.
• 7:31
Speaker 4: Uh, paulie has one too, called the sniper a little bit more money, but it includes more things.
• 7:35
Speaker 4: But I can open the hood and see what it looks like.
• 7:37
Speaker 4: Good, yeah, yeah, hold on, swap the camera around.
• 7:41
Speaker 4: Okay, don't want to look at it.
• 7:43
  Speaker 4: There you go.
• 7:44
  Speaker 4: There you go.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: Still wires loose, but from afar you're not going to think anything else.
• 7:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, it looks like a carburetor.
• 7:56
Speaker 4: Just got a couple more wires tucked in, but these are for the fuel injectors, right?
• 8:00
Speaker 4: So injector A, injector B, and then you got C and D on the back, and that's really what I consider the difference in these kits, because they'll say 600 horse, 800 horse, 900 horse, and what that is is that's basically the size of the injector, so that's what delivers more fuel through the bowls, basically, and inside the car.
• 8:22
Speaker 4: This is where everything is housed.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: So literally you just mount this in a glove box on the dash In case you need it for any tuning stuff.
• 8:31
Speaker 4: That's what you would use.
• 8:34
Speaker 3: So you can adjust it, you can adjust it yourself, but the computer's pretty much smarter than we are, so it's going to see the air fuel ratio, know what the intake air temperature is and make all the adjustments.
• 8:48
Speaker 1: And that little cell phone thing that you had there.
• 8:50
Speaker 1: Is that the computer that runs it?
• 8:52
Speaker 4: No, there's a computer that runs it here on the firewall.
• 8:56
Speaker 4: This one actually has two of them.
• 8:57
Speaker 4: Hold on, come on there.
• 9:01
Speaker 4: So FITech Yep, that is the actual controller.
• 9:05
  Speaker 4: This is two.
• 9:06
Speaker 4: So we got one for the transmission and then one for the actual engine there.
• 9:11
Speaker 3: So you've got an electronic transmission in this as well.
• 9:16
  Speaker 4: Yes, 4l60e.
• 9:18
Speaker 4: So he's got a really good overdrive and he's got the ability to actually put some power down through it in the lower gears too.
• 9:24
  Speaker 1: Nice.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: So what made him go to a fuel injection instead of the carburetor?
• 9:30
Speaker 1: Just the dependability of it.
• 9:33
Speaker 4: You know, what's interesting is this is one of like four of my customers that can actually adjust a carburetor himself.
• 9:37
Speaker 4: It was surprising to see him go to it, but he's looking for drivability.
• 9:40
Speaker 4: He wants to be able to hop in it and go across country and not worry about any tuning issues the entire time.
• 9:46
Speaker 1: And how much does a system like that cost?
• 9:48
Speaker 1: Just the cost of the actual mechanics.
• 9:51
Speaker 4: This one was just under a thousand bucks.
• 9:53
Speaker 4: What's the bet at all?
• 9:55
Speaker 3: So is that the 400 horse system?
• 9:57
Speaker 4: This is the 600 horse.
• 9:59
  Speaker 4: This is a 383.
• 10:00
  Speaker 4: It's a built 383 crate motor.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: Have you done any?
• 10:04
Speaker 1: Have you done any other work to the motor?
• 10:07
Speaker 4: Um no, I mean all external stuff, right Heads, valve covers, that kind of stuff, pretty dressy stuff.
• 10:11
Speaker 4: He's a vintage air dealer here in Texas so he's got all the fancy vintage air stuff on it, a bunch of billet parts up front Super clean?
• 10:20
Speaker 1: Has he got headers on it?
• 10:22
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah, headers, all titanium wrapped is what we call it, yep.
• 10:26
Speaker 4: And we do that.
• 10:28
Speaker 3: And the nice thing about today's headers are that most of them come with the bung for the O2 sensor or built into it.
• 10:35
  Speaker 4: O2 is already.
• 10:36
  Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
• 10:36
Speaker 4: So some of the things we did end up doing is, like you can see, the brass fitting here is sensors that have to get added for fuel injection, but not many.
• 10:46
Speaker 4: Most of it comes with the kit.
• 10:48
Speaker 4: We're still waiting on a good set of spark plug wires for this thing Still running an old school distributor coil setup.
• 10:54
Speaker 4: I mean, it's made to look period correct but run like a modern vehicle.
• 11:00
Speaker 1: So what are you going to do to the distributor and all the stuff that goes with that?
• 11:06
  Speaker 1: Anything.
• 11:07
Speaker 4: Distributor will actually say, just like it uses, that that's part of the trigger system.
• 11:10
Speaker 4: I got it, you use that, it all stays.
• 11:13
  Speaker 1: Nice.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: Well, I love the patina and stuff on there.
• 11:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, we could talk about that kind of stuff all day long.
• 11:20
Speaker 4: I love natural patina.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: I love real patina.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: I hate fake patina.
• 11:23
Speaker 4: This is really good fake patina, but it's not my favorite.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: This is how I create patina, though, so this is a exhaust ring that we made for this truck, so this will end up going around this to give it a little more finished edge, but having that time to put it all on yet, because I'm lazy, but I leave things out in the weather of the sun.
• 11:47
Speaker 4: Let him age correctly.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: Are you going to do that to my Corvette?
• 11:53
Speaker 4: Your Corvette has to go in there beside the other Corvettes, so I see, I'll see you got more of them in there.
• 11:58
Speaker 4: We've got three black C5s on site right now.
• 12:02
Speaker 2: Oh, so John is going to be a parts car.
• 12:07
Speaker 4: Well, that's the one.
• 12:08
Speaker 4: C5 that's a race car inside is actually the one's going to Mexico and two and a half weeks.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: Is that going to do the hill climb?
• 12:15
Speaker 4: Yep, it'll do the hill climb.
• 12:16
Speaker 4: And then we got a small event that happens right before that called the Ticate challenge, which is a section of roads that were closed off in Mexico when the new interstate went through and they allow us to run those and it's kind of in a loop format, but it's nine miles and then we leave there, drive four hours south, basically six hours south of San Diego, into Baja Mexico, and we run a road called the National Observatory Road.
• 12:40
Speaker 4: Up at this mountain is seven observatories representing nine countries at the top and if you're on Google at all, you look up Mike's Big Sky Ranch.
• 12:50
Speaker 4: We're racing up the other side of that mountain.
• 12:52
Speaker 4: I understand you guys.
• 12:55
Speaker 1: I understand it's the longest hill climb in the world.
• 12:58
  Speaker 4: Second longest it's 19.6 miles.
• 13:01
Speaker 4: So wow 6,800 feet of elevation change.
• 13:05
Speaker 4: It's a climb, and it's a different climb than what we see with Pike Speak in Mount Washington, because there's no let's call it rhyme or reason to it.
• 13:13
Speaker 4: It's paved like an old donkey trail, for lack of a better term.
• 13:17
  Speaker 4: Well, you're on a donkey.
• 13:19
Speaker 4: It is kind of a system.
• 13:21
Speaker 3: There you go Now?
• 13:23
Speaker 3: Are you going as support for the vehicles or are you going to wheel a car?
• 13:28
Speaker 4: Support and then assisting them with making sure the cars are actually safe to get them up the mountain.
• 13:32
Speaker 4: Some of the cars we've seen show up there a little less than what I would like to see and we basically do modifications there in a parking lot make people safer before they actually go race up that mountain.
• 13:43
Speaker 1: See, Richard is an international tech inspector and I'm sure that there are lots of guard rails all the way up there, so you don't fall off the mountain, I'll say, but like bowling with bumpers.
• 13:53
Speaker 4: What's interesting is the speed limit going up that whole 19 mile section of road 22 to the top is 30 mile an hour.
• 13:59
Speaker 4: So all the guard rails were built for 30 mile an hour and we had cars last year hitting 140 in sections of the road.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: Hopefully not hitting the guard rail, huh.
• 14:08
Speaker 4: No, no, we don't have any guard rails.
• 14:10
Speaker 4: You missed the guard rail because it's positioned to catch you at 30.
• 14:12
Speaker 4: It's not positioned to catch you at 7,000 or 100.
• 14:15
Speaker 5: Just slide right over the top of it there, you just go straight off.
• 14:19
Speaker 4: You don't hit a thing Until you hit the bottom.
• 14:22
Speaker 2: Well, no it's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop.
• 14:25
Speaker 3: Catch a little air on the way by, yeah, yeah.
• 14:29
Speaker 4: It is quite the challenge, but that's what makes it.
• 14:31
Speaker 4: I mean, find a place in the US where you can actually close down a road.
• 14:34
Speaker 4: I mean it has to be something like Pike Speak it has to be something like 59 and 610.
• 14:38
  Speaker 2: Yeah 59 and 610.
• 14:40
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 14:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, don't do it, don't do it, you're in big trouble with that stuff.
• 14:46
Speaker 1: Richard, what is your own personal car?
• 14:48
Speaker 1: I heard some talk about a diesel.
• 14:50
Speaker 1: Is that what you normally drive?
• 14:52
  Speaker 1: Is the truck.
• 14:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, that is the service truck over there.
• 14:55
  Speaker 4: It is a 2016 Ram 2500.
• 14:58
Speaker 4: We just turned 250,000 miles on it, but it is outfitted with a rat pack and then a roof rack.
• 15:05
Speaker 4: It'll tell about anything, but we had an event coming back from Cabo, mexico and I was in the 1500 Ram at that time and I realized that it wasn't quite big enough.
• 15:17
Speaker 4: Coming down some of the mountains.
• 15:18
Speaker 4: I didn't have the stopping power that I needed, so we upgraded when we got back.
• 15:22
  Speaker 4: Nice, good choice.
• 15:25
Speaker 5: I know how that feels.
• 15:25
Speaker 5: I was towing a boat one night through Lufkin come up to a red light slid right through it.
• 15:30
Speaker 5: That boat pushed me right through that light, like I wasn't even doing that.
• 15:33
Speaker 2: Was it a speed boat?
• 15:34
  Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
• 15:35
Speaker 4: It's sketchy and I don't want to have any mistakes in Mexico, so I try and do the best I can to stay off everybody's radar when I'm there.
• 15:42
Speaker 1: So that's the service truck.
• 15:44
Speaker 1: What is your own personal car?
• 15:46
Speaker 4: My own personal car is what you call the Miata right, so the one looks like a steel frame.
• 15:51
Speaker 4: That's basically all that it is.
• 15:52
Speaker 4: It's the one that ran up Pike's Peak this year, so we call it the Apexo set.
• 15:57
Speaker 4: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha ha.
• 15:59
Speaker 4: 1,730 pounds and makes 575 horsepower of the wheels.
• 16:04
Speaker 1: It sounds really cool.
• 16:05
Speaker 1: Are you a member in good standing with the Alvin Police Department?
• 16:10
Speaker 4: Currently yes, I am.
• 16:11
Speaker 4: So it hasn't, it hasn't tested streets of Alvin in about three years.
• 16:15
Speaker 1: I see, ok, well, just make.
• 16:18
Speaker 3: That's because of the restraining order.
• 16:21
Speaker 2: I don't want to say it.
• 16:22
Speaker 1: But Godspeed, His name's not John Glenn, ok.
• 16:25
Speaker 4: Well, we found out.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: I think there are better left unsaid we found a video from 2021 about the Hill Climb and it's got an Apex Auto Works.
• 16:35
Speaker 3: Black Miata is in the video.
• 16:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, that Miata has been there I think six times now five or six times.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: That customer is upgrading to a Black C5 Corvette now.
• 16:47
Speaker 2: So we ought to be there this afternoon.
• 16:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, hopefully, and Donald, donald, bring it down today.
• 16:53
  Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
• 16:54
Speaker 1: Well, hopefully we won't have any sideways squirts out going down there the up.
• 16:59
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we'll.
• 17:00
Speaker 1: Well, Richard, it's always great to talk to you and love the truck project that you've got going on.
• 17:06
  Speaker 4: It's good.
• 17:07
Speaker 4: Hopefully we see you on the Hot Rod Tour of Texas.
• 17:09
Speaker 4: That's the plan to have this one out there running around so no, Donny will be there.
• 17:14
  Speaker 3: I'll be there.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: That's my go to place.
• 17:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, all right, brother.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: Well, thank you so much, and we'll be in touch.
• 17:23
  Speaker 4: Absolutely.
• 17:23
Speaker 4: Talk to you soon, thank you.
• 17:26
  Speaker 1: Richard Tomlin.
• 17:27
Speaker 3: Apex Auto Works International Tech Inspector Cool.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Very cool International Tech Inspector and he's going to fix my electric problem in the C5.
• 17:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, what are you saying?
• 17:40
  Speaker 1: You're saying something?
• 17:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, I have to tell you I hate electrical problem.
• 17:45
  Speaker 1: Listen, I mean it's.
• 17:45
Speaker 1: When it comes to that I'm out.
• 17:48
Speaker 1: My dad he was.
• 17:49
Speaker 1: He loved messing with all that stuff.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: It's the thrill of the hunt.
• 17:54
  Speaker 2: Not me.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: Yeah, through the hunt Chase something all over the place and come to find out.
• 17:58
  Speaker 5: This is ground.
• 18:00
  Speaker 5: It's a little bit loose.
• 18:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, didn't even know existed, but you know hopefully, while you're working on it, you don't let the smoke out of the wire.
• 18:06
Speaker 3: Exactly that makes it so much easier to find.
• 18:09
Speaker 2: It's so satisfying to find it the smoke out of the wire.
• 18:13
Speaker 1: Get it out of the way, no, out of the wire.
• 18:15
  Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
• 18:16
Speaker 1: Well, this is always a mystery point at the show.
• 18:21
Speaker 1: Here on the end We'll time car talk show, because we always charge Conrad along with putting together the events calendar.
• 18:32
Speaker 1: Now, I don't know what the title of the page is that he looks at, but we always wind up doing the cruise in calendar and the difference between the events calendar and the cruise in calendar are like night and day, because the events calendar means it's, like you know, the Houston auto show, the auto Ram.
• 18:53
Speaker 1: Those, or events cruise in are one of those kind of things that you cruise into, you cruise out.
• 19:02
Speaker 2: I was there last week, had breakfast with Craig.
• 19:04
  Speaker 4: Oh you did.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: And the family oh yeah, the usual suspects were there.
• 19:08
Speaker 3: That's good, that's good, was it a full?
• 19:10
Speaker 3: What car did Craig bring?
• 19:12
Speaker 2: He brought his Ford.
• 19:13
Speaker 2: He did not bring the a wrong Brung, the GT Right, he's having some issues with the five or something of that nature, so he decided not to take it.
• 19:21
Speaker 3: I got you, well, I mean, which it makes you know why would you take it out if you haven't a little issue with so next Saturday is the Schulenberg take flight cruise and at 830 in the morning there'll be a whole bunch of people leaving from the Buckeys and Waller, headed for Schulenberg and back and that sounds like fun.
• 19:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, what would they use that Saturday or Saturday, saturday.
• 19:42
Speaker 3: And then I tried to get, um, uh, who's our little buddy out there?
• 19:47
Speaker 3: And uh, gilly, steven Ruse tried to get him connected with Randy Weldon about connecting in to his Ford store, because Steven works for a Ford store out there.
• 19:59
Speaker 3: I don't know if that ever came together or not, but uh and then.
• 20:03
Speaker 3: Uh, also next Saturday is the Texas Gator fest car show out there at Fort Anowak.
• 20:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, anowak, anowak, let's cruise the drag, the Nederland Avenue drag cruise.
• 20:21

• 20:23
Speaker 3: Neaterville is the baseball team, Neaterland is Mars.
• 20:27
  Speaker 3: September 30th starts at 8am.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: Uh, and it goes until everybody's arrested by the local police.
• 20:37

• 20:39
Speaker 3: Um, and then, uh, michael Woodings, uh, fifth car show down there at uh.
• 20:45
  Speaker 2: Waterfront.
• 20:46
  Speaker 3: Water, yeah.
• 20:47
Speaker 3: The Waterfront car show yeah.
• 20:48
Speaker 3: So that's uh, uh, that's going to go on.
• 20:52
Speaker 3: San Leon, leon, leon, leon, sphinx, leon, whatever it's top water grill L E O N and that goes on, leon, it goes on to four, four PM.
• 21:04
Speaker 3: Uh, starts early in the morning and this is the fifth one they're having what?
• 21:07
Speaker 3: What day does that?
• 21:08
Speaker 3: It's the last Saturday of October.
• 21:14
Speaker 3: Okay, and then we'll be there.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: We'll be there last Saturday about last Saturday of September.

Speaker 3: We'll be there again.
• 21:52
Speaker 1: We hope, and then they haven't signed that deal yet, have they?
• 21:56
Speaker 5: No, and I got an email from them this week the new guy that we're going to be working with.
• 21:59
Speaker 5: He wanted me to send a copy of the contract from last year because he can't find it from the girl that we used to work with.
• 22:05
Speaker 5: So we're talking, so I think we'll be good.
• 22:07
Speaker 3: Good Mike's on top of it Again.
• 22:09
Speaker 3: Friday, October 14th, the All British Car Show from the Butler House in Spring, Texas, just north on Gosling Road from 99.

Speaker 3: , and then the 38th annual Wolf Creek Car and Truck and Bike Show in Cold Spring, Texas.
• 22:22
  Speaker 3: That's it Okay.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: I'm proud of you.
• 22:27
  Speaker 1: Thank you.
• 22:27
  Speaker 1: The events calendar.
• 22:30
Speaker 3: Well, and then we'll have Bill Zleg on a little bit later.
• 22:33
  Speaker 3: Is November.
• 22:34
Speaker 5: Leave it alone he could.
• 22:36
Speaker 3: November 10th and 11th is the 17th hour over Heroes and how.
• 22:41
Speaker 3: That's enough of that, yeah, all right Now.
• 22:43
Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
• 22:44
Speaker 1: Time now on the In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show for this hour's car review.
• 22:48
Speaker 1: Mr Mars had a chance to drive the Buick Encore.
• 22:53
  Speaker 5: Take it away.
• 22:53
Speaker 5: Yes, sir, I did.
• 22:54
Speaker 5: We're talking about the 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir Front Wheel Drive.
• 23:01
Speaker 5: Now, this vehicle is a subcompact SUV that's a very, very competitive segment.
• 23:06
Speaker 5: I mean, there's a lots of stuff in here.
• 23:09
Speaker 5: Now, this particular model of the Buick has three trim levels preferred, sport, touring and the Avenir, which is the one that we have For this year.
• 23:18
Speaker 5: They've done some revised the grille, got some new daytime running lights on it.
• 23:22
Speaker 5: Up front you're going to find rain sensing wipers, led lighting all the way around.
• 23:27
Speaker 5: It's got a power folding side mirrors that are heated, roof rails, got a hands-free power lift gate and it's rolling on some nice 19-inch wheels.
• 23:35
Speaker 5: Now, when you go to the inside, it's going to have a little more, to me, of the Buick styling.
• 23:42
Speaker 5: It's a little more upscale in there, going to have leather seating all through the vehicle, even at this level, and it's got an 8-inch driver screen where the driver is going to get all his information Got.
• 23:54
Speaker 5: The center stack is where you're going to find the rear view camera, all your convenience controls, the premium auto-tainment system All this is on an 11-inch screen in the center stack.
• 24:06
Speaker 5: Got some USB ports in the front and the rear and it has the Bose premium auto sound and it does fill up pretty nice.
• 24:15
Speaker 5: Up under the hood is rather interesting 1.3-liter three-cylinder turbo engine.
• 24:23
Speaker 5: Turbo, yeah, and it's interesting that a 1.2 is the standard engine but we had the upgrade to the 1.3-liter.
• 24:30
Speaker 5: Wow, they boarded out.
• 24:31
Speaker 5: Did they stroke it too?
• 24:32
Speaker 5: Both of them are three cylinders, which, okay, 155 horsepower, 174 pound-feet of torque.
• 24:39
Speaker 5: In this particular setup it's backed by a CVT.
• 24:42
Speaker 5: Now if you get the 1.2, it's got a nine-speed automatic at it, but this has the CVT behind it.
• 24:47
Speaker 5: I thought that was kind of weird.
• 24:48
Speaker 5: The EPA says you should be looking for 29 in the city, 31 on the highway, combined for 30.
• 24:54
Speaker 5: I drove 406 miles and got 27.9 miles per gallon over the time that I had it for his foot.
• 25:03
Speaker 5: I was well pleased with doing that because it really had some nice smooth power.
• 25:07
Speaker 5: Of course, with the CVT, it did, it did.
• 25:09
Speaker 5: How many horsepower 155.
• 25:11
  Speaker 2: 155.
• 25:12
Speaker 2: This is a little car, though remember they're the mini horses.
• 25:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, but when you get the turbo motor in its sweet spot, the CVT keeps it there.
• 25:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's not a hot rod, don't get me wrong, but the way that it's moved by going through the power van whenever I was really stepping off into it to pass somebody or something, it worked.
• 25:31
Speaker 5: I thought it worked real well.
• 25:33
Speaker 1: I can only imagine what that would sound like without a muffler on it.
• 25:37
Speaker 5: I would have to think about that.
• 25:39
Speaker 5: I will tell you that out on the highway it's got a pretty nice ride to it.
• 25:44
Speaker 1: Well, it's a Buick, it better.
• 25:46
Speaker 5: The steering is very concise, very comfortable, I will say it does pick up a little road noise when you get above the speed limit, kind of like a warning that you're going to go fast when he gets above.
• 25:59
Speaker 3: No, you know what the road noise is.
• 26:00
Speaker 3: It's the cop-bind With the siren on going.
• 26:03
Speaker 3: You're doing 85 miles an hour.
• 26:05
Speaker 3: It's only a 55 mile an hour speed zone.
• 26:08
Speaker 5: They don't tell you that when they're going down the road.
• 26:10
  Speaker 5: Please continue on.
• 26:11
Speaker 5: So the vehicle you can actually get into the Encore for $25,600 if you get down into the stripper model.
• 26:20
Speaker 5: Now the vehicle, the base trim price for the one that we had was $31,900.
• 26:24
Speaker 5: As tested, the MSRP was $34,445, which I don't think is bad out there on the market these days.
• 26:33
Speaker 1: Well, that's a premium GM vehicle.
• 26:37
Speaker 3: Yes, and the Buick stripper's name is Electra.
• 26:40
Speaker 5: Sorry, and if you look across at the Chevrolet Trailblazer.
• 26:44
Speaker 5: You know the base price on it's going to be $23,100.
• 26:49
Speaker 5: The Honda HRV is $24,100.
• 26:51
  Speaker 5: The Mazda CX-30, $25,000.
• 26:53
Speaker 5: So again, it's a very competitive segment.
• 26:55
Speaker 5: Even the Subaru Cross Trek, which is what I'm driving now and I'll review next week $24,995.
• 27:02
Speaker 5: So there's a lot of vehicles in that subcompact segment and there's a lot to choose from.
• 27:06
Speaker 5: And I think if you're looking for something a little bit on the guess the upper scale, maybe luxury, the Buick is one you ought to look at.
• 27:14
Speaker 5: Yep, I agree, okay.
• 27:17
Speaker 1: Well, very nice, nicely done, Well edited, well edited.
• 27:23
  Speaker 1: We appreciate.
• 27:25
Speaker 3: It's going to happen for me.
• 27:26
Speaker 1: It's good, yeah, because that's all there is, and they ain't no more.
• 27:29
  Speaker 1: How's that?
• 27:30
Speaker 1: So was that too?
• 27:31
  Speaker 5: fast.
• 27:32
Speaker 2: No, you're perfect, You're right on time, right on time.
• 27:35
Speaker 3: All right, all right, just checking, made up for me going over.
