- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good evening, everybody.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: It's good to be with you.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Always is.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: You know, when we um gather together for something like Good Friday, you can ask the question, you say, Well, isn't Jesus crucified for our sins every single day?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Umorrow and Sunday when we celebrate Easter here, isn't Jesus risen every single day?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Don't those things apply to us every single day?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, right, of course.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: But this is a time, perhaps unlike any other in the year, where we simply just consider the fact that somebody died so that you could live.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And uh this evening, what I want to do briefly is we're gonna look at that kind of from three different perspectives.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: One is the Romans, one is the crowd that was screaming, crucify, and one are the criminals that were crucified next to Jesus.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And except for one man, every single one of those groups of people or individuals rejected their king.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: When we think about Good Friday, right, we're talking about Jesus up on that cross.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: He's strung up there.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Deuteronomy says that anybody who hangs on a tree is cursed.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But before all of that happened, Jesus had to go through a sham trial, was rejected by his closest friends, in fact, betrayed by one of his disciples.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And so, in a moment, I'm going to share with you a passage from the book of John where Pontius Pilate is interviewing Jesus, interrogating him, really, about whether or not he is the king.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: This is a big question.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But before we even get to that point, what has already happened is, like I said, Jesus had gone to the garden to pray, knowing what was coming.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: He had one of his closest friends kiss him on the cheek and hand him over to the authorities.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Then he went before the high priest, the big dog, I mean the guy who should be, if all things are going right, in his corner.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And yet Caiaphas was his name, trumped up all these different charges, ultimately saying that he was blaspheming, that he was somebody who was deserving of death, Jesus was, because of what he had said about God.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: How ironic that is.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And so Caiaphas has a problem, this high priest, because they're not just satisfied with the fact that Jesus should die.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: They need more than that.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Because the Jews, they can they can stone him.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: That's one of the options that they have available.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But in order for him to be crucified, in order for him to receive the most embarrassing brutal treatment that is reserved for the lowest criminals, they have to get Rome's authority.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: They have to go to their sworn enemy.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Israel and Rome hate each other.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: They have to go to their sworn enemy and get his permission in order to not just kill Jesus, but do it in the worst way that they can possibly imagine.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: The problem is for Caiaphas is that Rome doesn't care that he's saying bad things about God, apparently.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And so what Caiaphas does is he begins to tell him this alternative lie that Jesus is a threat to Caesar because he says that he's a king.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: That Jesus is going to overthrow Caesar.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And that Pilate, who is a guy really worried about his job, does not want to make his boss look bad.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And so he goes in to question Jesus.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Pilate went back into his headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, So are you the king of the Jews?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: This is what they've been telling me.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered, Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Loaded question from Pilate.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Is he asking, this is why Jesus wants clarification, is he asking, well, am I a political or a military leader that's going to overthrow Caesar and is going to, you know, run all these things over and is going to cause a lot of commotion?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Jesus says, well, in that case, the answer would be no.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: That's not what I've come here to do.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But am I the king of the Jews, the one that's been prophesied, the Messiah, the Savior, the one that's come from the line of David?
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Well, then the answer to that question is yes.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Furthermore, Jesus wants to know, like Pilate, are you really asking me this question?
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Or are you just doing it because you're supposed to?
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Well, Pilate is not interested in any kind of deeper faith conversation.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: He says, I'm not a Jew, am I?
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: This isn't even my thing.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: What have you done?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: My kingdom is not of this world, Jesus said.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: This echoes something that Jesus had said in the garden a couple hours earlier when they were arresting him, and everyone was going, Well, are you going to stop them from arresting you?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And he goes, I could if I wanted to.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: That's not really the question here, right?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: It's not really, can I call down le legions of angels to defend myself?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: But it's, am I willing to go?
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And the answer to that is yes.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Jesus would say, My kingdom is not from here.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Doesn't mean that God is not ruler over heaven and earth, right?
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Doesn't mean that his kingdom is not moving and active in this world, but Jesus says, I've come for a different purpose, right?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: My kingdom is really coming, Pilate.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: My kingdom isn't the kind of thing that you need to be worried about.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: My kingdom isn't going to threaten Rome.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Well, not yet, at least.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: My kingdom is something that I've been telling people about.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Well, that's not a clear answer, right?
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: So you are a king then?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Pilate asked.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: You say that I'm a king.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Jesus replied, I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this, to testify to the truth.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: What is truth?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: said Pilate.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: What is truth?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: As if it's something that cannot be found or is hopeless to chase after.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: As if something like real truth doesn't exist, right?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: It's impossible to know.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: But Pilate is standing in front of the way and the truth and the life and asking him questions.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Like the guy who is saying, What is truth?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: is talking to the one who defines it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Sitting in the same room with him, right?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Going, My kingdom is not of this earth.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: And he goes, Yeah, what is truth, right?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: What is so ironic about Pilate's conversation with Jesus is he's asking him the right questions.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Are you the king?
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Do you have a kingdom?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Are you doing something here?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Like, should I be concerned about what's going on?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: What's your purpose?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: So you are a king then.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Question that we have to ask ourselves is what keeps us from seeing Jesus as the true king, just like Pilate did.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: It's not enough to be in the same room, right?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: It's not enough to just be talking.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: How is it, and how tragic is it, that Pontius Pilate can be having a conversation with the king of the universe and yet just miss every single sign.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Miss the whole thing.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: He's going to walk out of that room, and one of the things that he'll tell the Jews is he'll go, I think he's innocent.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I can't, I can't find a reason why we should kill him, okay?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Um and Pilate's wife comes to him and she's like, I've had a dream, and you should not kill this guy.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: But that's not enough, right?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Because ultimately he's going to face a lot of pressure from the crowd.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: We'll get to that in just a second.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: But Pilate, as an individual, has the opportunity to change his life.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: And he's sitting in front of the king and asking all of these questions, and yet he walks out of that room, and in a moment he will hand him over to the Jews and go, Here is your king.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I wash my hands.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: What keeps us from seeing Jesus as the true king, right?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: For some of us, it's it's a desire to have Jesus serve us in a way that he never said he was going to serve us.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: We might say that we want to be consumers of the faith, that we have expectations for Jesus that he never intended to fill.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: That we want him to do something and to jump through hoops and to prove something to us that he says, I don't need to prove that to you.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: This past Sunday, here at the church, if you were with us, we talked about Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and how many people had missed expectations because they thought he was going to be some kind of political or military ruler that was going to overthrow Rome.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And Jesus said, I didn't come for that.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I came for something so much more than that.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And yet many people rejected him because he did not meet their expectations.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: They saw him, they talked with him, and yet left disappointed.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And how is that possible?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: How is it possible that we can come to a service like Good Friday?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And you can hear me, we can read, we can worship through music, and hear the story that we know about Christ dying for us, and yet we can walk out of those doors unchanged.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Because we've, you know, I've done this a couple times.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: I know the story, I know, I know the next thing he's going to talk about.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And so, because of that, it's not new information for me.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, Jesus is my savior, that's great.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: But what is it to walk in and hear about a king and leave unchanged?
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: It's a question we need to ask ourselves.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: But that wasn't the end of Christ's interrogation, his interaction with people who were going to reject him, because gathering outside of Pilate's headquarters at this time was a crowd of people, led by the chief priests, Caiaphas himself.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And this crowd was screaming.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: You can imagine if you're sitting there in the room with Pilate and Jesus, you can hear the crowd chanting outside of these walls.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And what they are screaming is for Jesus and that he should be crucified.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Pilate is going to, at this point in time, step aside as a character in the story.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: He says he's innocent.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: He doesn't believe that he should kill Jesus.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: But instead of doing something about that, instead of preventing injustice from taking place, he is simply going to hand him over to the crowd.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: When Pilate heard these words that the people were chanting, he brought Jesus outside.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Then he told the Jews, Here's your king.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And one thing we should know is that when this happens, Jesus is in a different kind of uniform.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: At this moment, when Pilate presents him, he has a crown of thorns pressed down upon his head, and he has a dirty purple cloak that they've draped around him because the Roman guards are mocking the fact that he says that he is a king.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And so presented in front of the nation of Israel, their true king is one who is dressed like a fake king, one who is being killed because of what he has told them, the truth that he has expressed.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And as he does this, you can get this visceral image, this terrible picture of the same people who are supposed to be accepting and trusting in him, are now the people that are screaming for him to be crucified.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: It's a shame what happens here.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: They shouted, Take him away.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Take him away, crucify him.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Pilate said to them, Should I crucify your king?
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Nobody understood the weight of that question.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: We have no king but Caesar, the chief priests answered.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Then he handed him over to be crucified.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: We have no king but Caesar, they say.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Their sworn enemy.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, they hate tax collectors, the people who they say work for Rome and cheat them out of their money.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: They hate their oppression from the city of the Roman Empire here, and yet now they're aligning with their sworn enemy, the people that they absolutely despise in order to kill the one that has ultimately come to save them.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So they have moved from King Jesus over to King Caesar.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't know about you, but when I read these sections, I often think to myself, like, I have this good thought in my head.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, pfft, not me, right?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Not me.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Give me my time machine.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Let me go back there.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: No way I'm saying that.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Maybe, but let me tell you what I am doing is I'm probably standing silent in that crowd while everybody else is yelling, crucify him.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I, the pressure, right?
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: The how charged this moment is, as the leaders of my nation, the people that I'm looking to for guidance, are screaming, crucify him, as some of my friends are around me screaming, crucify him.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Man, I don't know if I say anything.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: I think I might just stand there.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I'd like to think I would, but I probably wouldn't.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Where are we tempted to go along with the crowd instead of standing for our king?
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're not at that point where you'd go, you know, with a raised hand, I'm gonna defy God.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna, I am the one who screams crucify.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're not that person.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: But as we'd like to think that we would treat the situation differently, that we wouldn't be a part of that crowd, how many times do we stand in silence and fail to stand up for our king when the stakes are so much lower?
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: In our workplace, with our friends, with our family, even just having a neighbor that you know you should invite to church or invite or talk to God, you know, talk with them about God, and yet you just go, eh.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: No thanks.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: This is what it kind of means, right?
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: To stand in silence.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Maybe we're not doing the thing that we looks like rejection, but through our silence, we are rejecting the king anyway.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: We are guilty by association, you might say, with those who are standing in the crowd.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And this is something that should challenge every single one of us.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to stand for the king?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Because if he really is your king, and that's right, that's the question that underlies this entire thing, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Like if he really is your king, if he really is the one who has saved you, and he's not some fraudulent, you know, whatever person who's just wearing a dirty robe, if he really did die for your sins, why are we sometimes so afraid to embrace that?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: That's a good question to ask.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I ask myself that a lot.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: But once Pilate does this, right, hands him over to be crucified, Jesus is then uh beaten severely, and then he is given a timber cross to carry up a hill.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: And he's so weakened from blood loss, from beatings.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, not to mention that, but he's also just been spit on, shamed.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: He the crowd is jeering around him as they all follow him up the hill, right?
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: People are weeping.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Those who know and love him as they watch him stumble to carry this cross.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And the Roman guards, they're not happy with how fast he's moving.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And so they bring in a guy named Simon from Cyrene to carry the cross.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: But there's two other people carrying crosses that day as well, up that same road.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Two criminals who are about to be crucified next to Jesus.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: They were led away to be executed with him.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: When they arrived at the place called the Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: There is so much wrapped up in, and then they crucified him.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: They take him, they strip him of all of his clothes.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: He's naked when he goes up on the cross, except presumably for his crown of thorns.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: They stretch him out on this timber frame, they drive nails into his hands and to his feet, because when you go up on a cross, the way that you die is by suffocation.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: You die by suffocation because your feet are pinned to the cross and you are hung up.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And uh the only thing that is basically keeping you alive is your ability to press down on the nail that has been driven through your feet to support your body so that you can still move your diaphragm and your lungs and draw oxygen into your body.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: And once the pain of all of that becomes too much, and once you can't stand it any longer, you collapse upon yourself and you can't take a breath.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: This is why, if people weren't dying fast enough on the cross, they would break their legs.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is hung up on the cross, and beneath him the soldiers have taken his clothes and are gambling for them.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And he is listening to the crowd that is still surrounding him, chanting at him, um, insulting him, right?
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Saying, hey, if you if you really are the king, like why don't you move?
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Do something about this.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: His mother's right in front of him, speaks with the Apostle John to make sure that she's taken care of as her oldest son is about to die.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: But as he's up there, the people stood watching.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: And even this leaders were scoffing, right?
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: He saved others.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Let him save himself if this is God's Messiah, the chosen one.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Soldiers also mocked him.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: They came offering him sour wine and said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: An inscription was above him This is the King of the Jews.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: How true that is.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: But they didn't know it.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: See, what they were yelling at him is technically true, right?
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: They don't mean it to be, but he did save others.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: He could save himself, right?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: He is the chosen one, he is God's Messiah, he is the king of the Jews, he is all of those things.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: But they're yelling it at him like an insult.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: But not everybody fell prey to this.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: There is one person on this day who comes out shining.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: One of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Aren't you the Messiah?
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Save yourself and us.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: But the other answered, rebuking him, Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: We are punished justly because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: But this man, he's done nothing wrong.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: And Jesus said to him, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We often call this second man the thief on the cross.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Much has been said about the thief on the cross, and rightly so.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: But one thing I want to share here is perhaps the fact that we normally just think of the end of this section, right?
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Truly I tell you, today you'll be with me in paradise because he said, Jesus, remember me.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: But what I also need to share is That the thief understood a whole lot more than we give him credit for.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: In his little statement here, he feared God.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: He recognized his sin.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: He believed that his punishment he was receiving was just.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: He knew that Jesus didn't deserve to die.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And he trusted that Jesus had the power to save him.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: That's the gospel message right there.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: That is an individual understanding of the fact that we have fallen short of God's standard for our life.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: We have sinned.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: We are deserving of punishment.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Even death on a cross, right?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: That God did not deserve what happened to him on that cross, and that he is the only one that has the power to save.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Really, the only other detail that's added is one that hadn't happened yet by the time the thief is talking, which is how effective Christ's death on the cross was.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And the blood that is dripping down from his body and sinking into the soil beneath the cross is the exact blood that was needed and required in order to forgive the sins of those who are crucifying him.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: As the Romans are screaming out at him, and Jesus says, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: It is his blood being shed in that moment that was necessary in order that they might be forgiven.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: So our final question is Do I trust Jesus as my King, knowing that He alone can save?
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: I want you to place yourself on the cross next to Jesus.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I want you to put yourself in that space, right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: I want you to think about what that means.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Because there's so much more to this understanding that we are all the thief on the cross.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: We have all been at this point, and even if you have a hard time imagining it, right, you're all the thief on the cross right now, just like I am.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Because all of us without Christ are vulnerable.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: We are destined for death.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: We are headed the way of destruction if we do not yell out and go, I believe in you.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: I trust in you.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: This evening we are going to take the table together, the Lord's table as a church.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about the body and the blood of Christ.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: But we're going to do it just a little bit differently, okay, than you might be used to.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: So catch this.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to walk with you through the taking of the body or the bread, but we're going to sort of weave this together with a song.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: And so we're going to take the body together as a church, and then we're going to sing two verses of this song.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: And then I'm going to come back up and we will take the cup or the blood together, and then we will finish with two more, or the final two verses of the song.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Here's what I want you to be thinking about, though, as we move into this time of worship.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Tonight we've stood in the judgment hall with Pilate.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: We've been in the crowd with those who are yelling, screaming, crucify him.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: And we've hung beside Jesus on a cross, right?
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Rome, Israel, a criminal, they all rejected their king.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: But in their rejection, they proved the reason and the necessity for his death on the cross, his sacrifice, his blood shed for them and tonight shed for you.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Let's think about that.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: So we are going to take, and I invite you to take the bread.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: We might even move ourselves just a um about twelve hours earlier when Jesus was having the Passover meal with his disciples.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, This is my body, which is for you.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Do this in remembrance of me.
