- 0:03From the unexplained to the mundane, come join
- 0:06us on a Journey to the Fringe. Yep, that's that's
- 0:33me as you have come to learn So this topic has
- 0:37been on my radar for a little bit now It combines
- 0:41the best of all my favorite worlds except dinosaur
- 0:45ghosts. I got them on my mind though We got UAPs
- 0:48the paranormal abductions high strangeness and
- 0:52everything creepy especially something that I
- 0:56hate. Today we're looking at all in the paranormal
- 1:00world that is, who would have thought with that
- 1:02introduction, owls. I'm actually about to get
- 1:07somewhere in a book I'm reading on this topic.
- 1:10I'm very excited to see what you have for me.
- 1:12There's owls on it? Potentially. It's at least
- 1:15been teased a lot. Interesting. That makes part
- 1:19two even more if it wasn't already set up in
- 1:23the book as you need to read part two and constantly
- 1:27saying part two. Sorry, we're talking about ****.
- 1:30No, don't tell them. Josie's gonna beep that
- 1:34out, I feel. Sorry, guys. This is a Chelsea edit
- 1:39as well. So as always, this is just going to
- 1:43be an overview of the topic. It's a surprisingly
- 1:45diverse one with opportunity for future episodes.
- 1:49So let's talk about some owls. And I think the
- 1:52best place to start is with ancient folklore
- 1:56and owls. Well, sorry Chelsea, some of the people
- 1:59listening might not know what an owl is. Well,
- 2:02it's a creepy bird. I don't know, just Google
- 2:06it. I'm just assuming we're all on the same page
- 2:09here. Back to where I was going with this, people
- 2:13who don't know what owls are. Ancient folklore
- 2:16in owls. Across hundreds of cultures, owls hold
- 2:20deep spiritual significance. They are seen not
- 2:23only as animals, but as beings that move between
- 2:26the physical and spiritual worlds. They can be
- 2:30seen as spiritual messengers that many view as
- 2:33intermediaries between the living and the spirit
- 2:36world, protectors, symbols of transformation,
- 2:40spiritual messengers, or spirit -linked presences.
- 2:43Their ability to see in darkness symbolizes insight,
- 2:47hidden knowledge, and perception beyond ordinary
- 2:50human ability. Owls are frequently associated
- 2:55with death not only as evil omens but also evil
- 2:58omens which we'll talk about but on the opposite
- 3:01side they can also be viewed as guides who accompany
- 3:05souls or signal transformation. Owls symbolize
- 3:08endings that lead to new beginnings. As malevolent
- 3:12entities, harbingers of death or the restless
- 3:15spirits of the dead, hearing an owl hooting near
- 3:18your home is often considered a very bad omen.
- 3:22They can also be seen as warning agents or death
- 3:25omens. Can I also just add that people with fond
- 3:29memories of Ocarina of Time may know owls as
- 3:32the ones who explain the plot and let you know
- 3:34the controls. I have no idea what that means.
- 3:37Well, that's okay. Somebody might get it. I'm
- 3:40gonna peep it out. Others view owls as symbols
- 3:47of wisdom. Their quietness, night vision, and
- 3:50attentiveness make them symbols in intelligence
- 3:52and sacred knowledge. Some medicine people seek
- 3:56owl medicine for insight, healing, or prophetic
- 3:59vision. They hold a lot of symbolism across the
- 4:02world, across tons of different cultures. In
- 4:04Native American spiritual traditions, owls occupy
- 4:08a profound and multifaceted place. They symbolize
- 4:11wisdom, transformation, death, protection, and
- 4:14communication with the spirit world. A lot of
- 4:16what I just said. These traditions continue to
- 4:19shape cultural identity and conservation practices
- 4:22today. There is diverse meaning across the tribes,
- 4:26with many nations interpreting owls in unique
- 4:28ways. I'll name a few with as little detail as
- 4:31possible, as always. The Hopi have owl kachinas,
- 4:35which represent wisdom, and kachinas, they're
- 4:38cool things, I have one. Google them too, when
- 4:42you're googling owl, after that one. Open a new
- 4:44tab, keep the other tab for owl. Yeah, because
- 4:47you're gonna have to go back and be like, wait,
- 4:48what was an owl? Oh, right. And never close that
- 4:51owl tab. That's a journey to the fringe secret.
- 4:54That's how we do all our research. The Lakota
- 4:59suit, they connected to the Whoopi, a mediator
- 5:03between humans and supernatural. Is that what
- 5:06she's named after? I've always wondered where
- 5:09that name comes from. It could mean owl. I also
- 5:12could be saying it wrong. Also, Google Whoopi
- 5:15Goldberg now. We need to know this. Keep all
- 5:19the tabs open. We need you to research like we
- 5:22do. We're gonna walk you through it. The Pawnee,
- 5:27they see the owls as protectors and symbols of
- 5:30bravery. The Ojibwe associate them with both
- 5:33death and wisdom. They used owls as symbols for
- 5:37both evil and death. In addition, they use owls
- 5:40as a symbol of very high status of spiritual
- 5:43leaders and their spirituality. The Cherokee
- 5:46linked them to witchcraft and spiritual consultation
- 5:49between even tribes. It's amazing how they're
- 5:53good for one and bad for others. The Seminole
- 5:57believed that they were transformed shamans,
- 6:00which are the stikini. Skinwalkers. Essentially,
- 6:03right? And they come up multiple times in this
- 6:07episode. Skinwalker type creatures. The Stikini
- 6:10are sinister monsters from the Seminole folklore.
- 6:14Originally they were evil witches who transformed
- 6:16themselves into owl beings. By day they still
- 6:20resembled the Seminole people, but by night they
- 6:23vomit up their souls. along with their internal
- 6:26organs and become undead owl monsters that feed
- 6:30on human hearts. In Sun Seminole communities,
- 6:34speaking their name is thought to put you at
- 6:37risk for turning into one. So, Stikini stories
- 6:40are only told by certain medicine people and
- 6:43Chelsea. In other communities, they have been
- 6:47spoken more casually as boogeymen to frighten
- 6:50children. I think this is another place now that
- 6:52you can't go to, Chelsea. I'm quickly eliminating
- 6:55places I can go with this podcast. So, branching
- 7:02outwards from indigenous stories surrounding
- 7:04owls, among the Kiyu of Kenya, it is believed
- 7:08that owls were herbingers of death. If one saw
- 7:12an owl or heard its hoot, someone was going to
- 7:14die. In general, owls are viewed as herbingers
- 7:18of bad luck, ill health, or death. Can I just
- 7:21add, I really hope that owls weren't that calm
- 7:23in that area, because like, if you live where
- 7:27owls are, you hear like multiple hoots and night.
- 7:31It's true. Like you would lose like a genocide
- 7:33of your tribe in a season. yeah we grew up where
- 7:38owls were plentiful so we heard lots of owls
- 7:43and i don't remember death being that prominent
- 7:46well we did lose a cat to them in fact yeah well
- 7:50i mean one does that count i could yeah probably
- 7:55but we did hear a lot more owls than one definitely
- 7:59definitely um so in kenya i don't i don't know
- 8:05open another tab Send us... I have too many tabs
- 8:09open. Send us what it says for how many owls
- 8:11live in Kenya. The belief is widespread. Even
- 8:14today, owls are often considered omens of death
- 8:17or ghosts in various traditions. Are you Googling?
- 8:21I just heard typing. I am learning that barn
- 8:24owls live basically everywhere in Africa, which
- 8:27is crazy. Really? I didn't even know there were
- 8:29that many barns in Africa. Owls are so creepy.
- 8:33I didn't either. In China, owls are traditionally
- 8:38considered a sign of evil or misfortune, but
- 8:41are also seen as a symbol of good luck in military
- 8:44affairs, a symbol of protection and warding off
- 8:47evil spirits at funerals and even as the incarnation
- 8:50of ancestors. Even history's most infamous conquerors
- 8:54are not free from the influence of owls, with
- 8:57the hooting of the birds supposedly predicting
- 9:00the deaths of Julius Caesar and Augustus in ancient
- 9:03Rome, and for Genghis Khan, though, an owl may
- 9:08have rescued him from pursuers. They do so much.
- 9:12Moving on, we have the Roman Strix. In ancient
- 9:15Rome, there were tales of the Strix, a bird of
- 9:18ill omen that was believed to feed on human flesh
- 9:21and blood, often transforming into a witch. This
- 9:24is where we get the scientific name for true
- 9:27owls, Stringidae. The Roman Strix influenced
- 9:31later European folklore, contributing to the
- 9:34development of vampire legends, witchcraft narratives,
- 9:37and nocturnal demon myths. Its dual nature as
- 9:41both a bird and witch -like figure made it a
- 9:44powerful symbol of fear and the supernatural,
- 9:47persisting in culture memory for centuries. So
- 9:50that kind of summarizes my folklore and owls.
- 9:55We have a long history with owls. They hold a
- 9:58lot of symbolism. They've inspired a lot. So
- 10:02now that we covered the folklore, let's move
- 10:04on to the UFO connection, which is my personal
- 10:08favorite. Throughout this, we're going to be
- 10:10talking a lot about somebody named Mike Cleland,
- 10:14or maybe not talking a lot about it, but I use
- 10:17a lot of stuff that came from him. he's someone
- 10:20on the forefront of paranormal owl research,
- 10:23which is kind of a weird sentence to say. I don't
- 10:27think there's anyone else that is really doing
- 10:29the research. He has a couple of books, but most
- 10:33notable the Messenger's Owl Synchronicity and
- 10:36the UFO abductee and it's on my to read list,
- 10:39not for this episode evidently. Don't be worried
- 10:43about it though, I got you guys. First up, owls
- 10:47are linked with screen memories, which I don't
- 10:49think has come up on this episode before. In
- 10:53euphology, a screen memory is a false memory
- 10:57implanted by extraterrestrials. Are you saying
- 10:59scream memory or screen memory? Screen. and a
- 11:04screen memory is a false memory implanted by
- 11:08extraterrestrials to mask a traumatic or incomprehensible
- 11:12abduction event. It's exclusive to an abduction
- 11:16phenomenon, I think, at least in this scenario.
- 11:21Abductees frequently report seeing an impossibly
- 11:24large owl, often three to four feet, staring
- 11:28at them through a window or sitting on a dark
- 11:30road just before experiencing missing time. The
- 11:33idea is that when aliens are interacting with
- 11:36humans, they somehow are influencing people to
- 11:40see something other than a scary alien being
- 11:42in order to keep them calm through the experience.
- 11:45Yeah, keep you calm. Just a giant owl. A giant
- 11:49owl. And it seems that the most common screen
- 11:53memory people remember after such an experience
- 11:55is that of seeing strange three or four foot
- 11:58tall owls or just an owl in general. The perfectly
- 12:02calming. giant owl. Exactly. And personally,
- 12:05I would rather just have the abduction. I don't
- 12:09want any part of being close to an owl. Yeah,
- 12:13a giant owl. Yeah. No, thank you. So I do have
- 12:16a couple of examples of this. This is where it's
- 12:18going to get creepy. There is a movie that has
- 12:22completely escaped my mind right now, Taylor
- 12:25M***** Kind, and it deals exclusively with this.
- 12:30You're going to beep that, right? Yeah, probably.
- 12:33I'm gonna beep the fuck out of this episode.
- 12:38I can't recall off the top of my head. It just
- 12:41occurred to me while I was reading this that
- 12:43there's a movie on it. But I do have a couple
- 12:45of true story examples now. So first we have
- 12:48an experiencer, Karina Sables, who reported driving
- 12:52home with her family when she suddenly slammed
- 12:54on the brakes. In the glare of the headlight,
- 12:57she saw a typical grey alien standing on the
- 13:00side of the road. While she and her children
- 13:02begin to shake in terror her husband remain completely
- 13:06calm Turn to her and ask what are you guys so
- 13:09worried about? It's only a big owl This is textbook
- 13:13example of a localized screen memory where the
- 13:16phenomenon masks the entity for one witness while
- 13:19leaving the terrifying reality visible to others.
- 13:22I can't even imagine how I would lose it if that
- 13:27happened to me and I was seeing something that
- 13:31different from a person that I was with if I
- 13:33was seeing something terrifying. I don't even
- 13:36know what I would do. I'd rather be seeing a
- 13:38dinosaur ghost, you guys. So, another account
- 13:42documented by Clellan involves a group of friends
- 13:45driving at night. After watching a brilliant
- 13:48blue light descend from the sky and vanish beyond
- 13:50the tree line, a massive white owl suddenly appeared.
- 13:54The car was traveling at 55 miles per hour, yet
- 13:58the owl effortlessly kept pace, flying right
- 14:01next to the passenger window with its head turned,
- 14:04staring directly at the passengers inside before
- 14:07vanishing. This straight up sounds like one of
- 14:09the Mothman stories, doesn't it? Mothpersons.
- 14:13where she wanted to put the window down and talk
- 14:14to it. Yeah, there's gonna be some overlap a
- 14:18little bit between the two and I really think
- 14:21there is. Let's see what you think by the time
- 14:23we get to the end of this. But yeah, I mean people
- 14:26and encounters, they're unpredictable. Like,
- 14:29you never know what they're gonna do. In Sorbol,
- 14:34Sweden in summer 1966, two men traveling by moped
- 14:38pulled over for a bathroom break. and when they
- 14:41did noticed an owl sitting on a post behind the
- 14:44road. Shortly afterwards they claimed to have
- 14:47seen a large silvery craft hovering 150 meters
- 14:50above the ground and when it landed there appeared
- 14:53to be movement by strange humanoid figures within.
- 14:57We also have a gray connection with the with
- 15:00the owl sorry not the aliens the owls. Which,
- 15:04through hypnotic regression, many experiencers
- 15:07discovered that the giant big -eyed owl was actually
- 15:11a grey alien. The owl's oversized eyes and silent
- 15:15presence make it a convenient psychological overlay
- 15:18for the human brain, or the extraterrestrials,
- 15:21to use to mask the entity. Apparently. The sightings
- 15:25are closely related to UAP -associated phenomenon,
- 15:29and are also therefore linked to as we I think
- 15:34we already said maybe if not beep that contactees
- 15:39stop to admire an owl and when they're on their
- 15:41way again they realize hours have passed a theory
- 15:45is these owl's appearances could be screen memories
- 15:48physically implanted visions where owls were
- 15:51merely disguised stand -ins with hypnotic regression
- 15:54therapy later revealing something much weirder
- 15:57An experiencer shared two separate stories from
- 16:01friends who had nearly identical experiences.
- 16:04In both cases the person was driving late at
- 16:06night on a rural dirt road when they were forced
- 16:09to stop because a massive owl was standing dead
- 16:12center in their path refusing to move. The next
- 16:15thing both drivers remember was - Wait. Yeah,
- 16:17sorry did they like get out and move and the
- 16:19owl said no or did they just assume it was refusing
- 16:22to move? I Okay, my assumption is that do you
- 16:26think you got some road rage? Yeah, I that is
- 16:31that's my assumption is that there's honking
- 16:33there's light flashing going on and he shook
- 16:36his head So the next thing both drivers remembered
- 16:50was suddenly being further down the road or arriving
- 16:53at their Destination with hours of missing time
- 16:56having vanished in an instant So I think the
- 16:58owl had a little bit of road rage, too And he
- 17:01was like we'll take this there was probably two
- 17:02hours of just yelling and like he lost it to
- 17:05rage. Yeah next We have the shapeshifter and
- 17:11cryptic connections with owls. They're everywhere
- 17:14First up is La Lechuza In Mexican and Mexican
- 17:19-American folklore, Lelechusa is an old witch,
- 17:22or bruja, which has sold her soul to the devil
- 17:25in exchange for magical powers, allowing her
- 17:28to shapeshift into a giant owl. She is said to
- 17:31mimic the sounds of a crying baby to lure people
- 17:34outside at night. When witnesses see her, she
- 17:37is often described as an owl with the face of
- 17:40an old woman, or an owl that transforms back
- 17:43into a human figure when spotted. Wait, what?
- 17:47Why does it even transform if it just like immediately
- 17:50becomes a witch again if it's spotted? Doesn't
- 17:54that defeat the point of transforming it absolutely
- 17:56does but you're gonna see some a creepy story
- 18:01of this exact thing happening and it almost makes
- 18:04it even creepier could you imagine seeing an
- 18:07owl and It transforms into a human in front of
- 18:11you Would be thinking I definitely just saw something
- 18:15I was not meant to see in my life Yeah, I don't
- 18:20know how I would react to that happening I Think
- 18:24it would be like especially if it was on like
- 18:26a branch that clearly can't support a human.
- 18:28It's just like trying to figure it out Because
- 18:32like they don't get to control where they are
- 18:33when you see it. That's true. Just like teleporting
- 18:37It's no fun. Yeah, just a Waffle House any waffle
- 18:41So there's a famous story. The 1975 Robstown
- 18:46Big Bird Panic. Which is - Not to be confused
- 18:49with another Big Bird. So this comes from a Texas
- 18:55historical news account. The Corpus Christi Caller
- 18:59Times in 1975. La Luchusa is deeply rooted in
- 19:05Mexican and Tejano folklore as a witch who slopes
- 19:08her soul to shapeshift into a giant owl. In 1975,
- 19:13the rural town of Robstown, Texas was swept by
- 19:16a mass panic when residents flooded police with
- 19:19calls about a massive, silent bird -like creature
- 19:22swooping over the trees. It was far too large
- 19:25to be a normal bird, but the truly terrifying
- 19:28detail was its face. as any owl. Witnesses claim
- 19:32the giant owl had the face of a human being and
- 19:35some even reported it having human feet. I mean
- 19:38the human feet is one thing but have you ever
- 19:40seen the face of an owl? They're creepy and some
- 19:44people might be confused. That's why I'm having
- 19:46you all google owl because you need to be prepared
- 19:49for if you were to ever see one and not be confused
- 19:52with a human face. But this owl could have had
- 19:56a human You didn't know you might just think
- 19:59that that's an owl sitting there You need to
- 20:05know the difference and so that happened in 1975
- 20:10and it was a mass sighting. Here's some more
- 20:14La Luchusa encounters We have a user that shares
- 20:17a terrifying family story from Monterrey, Mexico.
- 20:21Their mother woke up at 3 a .m. Is it mostly
- 20:23Mexican? Yeah. Okay. I guess it's the ones that
- 20:28are transforming story, I guess. Yeah. I mean,
- 20:30this is a thing of their folklore. Yeah. Okay.
- 20:33So the mother woke up at 3 a .m. to the sound
- 20:36of their usually quiet dog barking viciously
- 20:39at the balcony. The mother found the person whose
- 20:42story this is. who was just an infant at the
- 20:44time, flipped face down on the mattress with
- 20:47pillows inexplicably tossed across the room.
- 20:50Hovering right by the open balcony door was the
- 20:54ugliest, most gigantic black owl the mother had
- 20:57ever seen. The dog lunged at it and the creature
- 21:00vanished into the night and the family fully
- 21:02believes La Lechuza was attempting to snatch
- 21:06the child. Then we have a user from South Texas
- 21:10taking a smoke break with a buddy during a night
- 21:13shift without making a single sound an impossibly
- 21:16large owl estimated to have a massive six -foot
- 21:20windspam. glided down into the parking lot right
- 21:23next to him. The user noted that the sheer unnatural
- 21:27size of the bird gave them instant chills, paralyzing
- 21:30them both with the terrifying realization that
- 21:33the creature looked large enough to physically
- 21:35lift a person off of the ground. Then we have
- 21:38user Thickprick who says, when he was around
- 21:4110 years old, my mom and her friend were sitting
- 21:43around drinking beer. She started talking Mexican
- 21:46folklore and began telling me the story about
- 21:49the Lichusa. Something about how it's a female
- 21:52witch in the form of an owl and if you see an
- 21:55owl it means someone has cast a bad spell on
- 21:58you. This was at night during the fall and we
- 22:01lived in the city somewhere with not much wildlife.
- 22:04When she was done with the story, she opened
- 22:07up the backsliding door to have a smoke and sitting
- 22:09on the fence in the dark looking at us was a
- 22:12big ass fucking owl. Okay, that has to be somebody
- 22:15fucking with them. Wouldn't that be so creepy?
- 22:18Like tell that story and then go and open the
- 22:20door and there's an owl? Yeah. I feel like they
- 22:23are getting set up. Really? But how would - Maybe.
- 22:26I was already a little scared from hearing some
- 22:29witch story, but seeing my mom and her friend
- 22:31turn white and nope, the door fucking closed
- 22:34had me shook for months. To be fair, you can
- 22:38just buy a fake owl from the hardware store.
- 22:40That's true. They keep crows away. Yeah. I'd
- 22:44never seen - Because crows hate them. Because
- 22:46when they look at them, they turn into a crow.
- 22:48It's true. i've never seen an owl in my life
- 22:53up to the point that have maybe only seen a couple
- 22:56in the past 25 years still gives me chills user
- 22:59red fox jr 2210 My great grandpa told me a story
- 23:05one time where one was perched on the roof of
- 23:07his house on his ranch He would curse it in Spanish
- 23:10and when he started saying the rosary He said
- 23:13the face of the person that put the curse on
- 23:15him appeared on the owl and it flew away He and
- 23:18my stepdad both had similar stories. I wish just
- 23:21like randomly yelling at things was more a part
- 23:24of North American culture Oh, you know like old
- 23:27man yelling at owls cursing at them Just not
- 23:32a thing that really happens here. You put those
- 23:34people in different, like, facilities. Don't
- 23:38put me in a facility, okay? I like to yell at
- 23:41things. So user mori420 This was maybe five years
- 23:49ago and to this day it still gives me the creeps.
- 23:51I was with my buddy on our way to a friend's
- 23:54house to catch the UFC fight. We had stopped
- 23:56at the store for a case of beer and on the way
- 23:59to my friend's house we missed the turn. Luckily
- 24:01that neighborhood all of the streets are sort
- 24:04of connected so instead of doing a u -turn I
- 24:07just told my buddy just catch the next turn and
- 24:09do a full circle so we can turn around like that.
- 24:12Streets are pretty narrow since it's residential
- 24:15area and we were in a pickup truck with 24 inch
- 24:17rims. Well he starts slowing down and I'm looking
- 24:21at a scratch off to see if I won when my buddy
- 24:23goes, look someone's husky is just sitting in
- 24:26the middle of the road. I look up and I'm like
- 24:30nah man that's too big to be a husky so I told
- 24:32him to switch to his high beams. As soon as he
- 24:36did, whatever it was did not like it. So like
- 24:39I said, my friend's truck is sitting on big wheels
- 24:42and this thing still looked huge and it was maybe
- 24:45less than 10 feet away from us. When the light
- 24:47hit it, it turned its head. When I say we saw
- 24:51a human face on this thing, I mean we could make
- 24:54out eyes, nose, mouth, everything. Then it literally
- 24:57just spread these big ass wings and took flight.
- 25:00No noise from the wings, nothing. How would you
- 25:03hear it from a truck? We literally had to pull
- 25:05over to the side of the road to kind of just
- 25:08evaluate what the hell we saw. Got to my friend's
- 25:11house and told them what we just saw, but they
- 25:13didn't take us seriously, still don't know what
- 25:16the fuck we saw that night. Okay, someone pulls
- 25:19up to my house and they go I'm so freaked out
- 25:22you're never gonna believe what I saw and I Drop
- 25:26ever I cancelled the plan and you're waiting
- 25:29to party cuz they're bringing beer to you Yeah,
- 25:31I'm like turn off UFC. We got to listen to this
- 25:34story and we take it the most seriously We've
- 25:37ever taken anything in our lives To me, if you
- 25:43have a paranormal experience around me, you best
- 25:46know that I'm taking that seriously and all my
- 25:48plans are cancelled to hear your paranormal story.
- 25:53Okay, so next we have Owlman of Cornwall, UK.
- 25:57So this is the next Cryptid Up and I think has
- 26:01Owlman came up before for us? It sounds familiar,
- 26:06but I don't think so. I know, I can't remember.
- 26:08Anyhow, he's gonna be touched on briefly because
- 26:11he's a cryptid to do with an owl. He's a legendary
- 26:14creature reported in 1976 and it is described
- 26:18as a large owl -like humanoid entity with pointed
- 26:21ears, glowing eyes, and giant talons. And I'm
- 26:25not going to lie, he's reminiscent of Mothman
- 26:28with one big difference. His name is Owlman.
- 26:33People have seen the penis. I have no idea what
- 26:38an owl penis looks like. I also don't know what
- 26:39a moth penis looks like. We're just assuming
- 26:41it has the human genitalia. Open a new tab. Open
- 26:47a new private tab. The first reported sighting
- 26:54of the owlmen occurred in April 1976. when two
- 27:01young girls, June and Vicky Melling, spotted
- 27:04the creature near Monon Church. According to
- 27:07their account, the owlman was hovering menacingly
- 27:11above the church tower, watching them intently
- 27:13with glowing eyes. The girls were so frightened
- 27:15that their family cut their holiday short. Subsequent
- 27:19sightings occurred through the 1970s and 80s,
- 27:22with other witnesses describing similar encounters
- 27:25near the church and surrounding woods. I have
- 27:27a quick question. Has inflation gotten so bad?
- 27:30that I don't think seeing a cryptid or an owlman
- 27:35would make me end my vacation that I spent good,
- 27:39hard money on. You know what? It went through
- 27:41my head. I wasn't gonna stop what I was saying
- 27:43to say that, but no, I'm for sure powering through
- 27:46that. I'm not calling it off for fear. One notable
- 27:53report came from two teenagers in 1978 who claimed
- 27:57the owlman emitted a chilling screech before
- 28:00flying off into the night. These sightings often
- 28:04coincide with quiet moonlit nights adding to
- 28:07the creatures ominous aura. So other cryptids
- 28:11we have include the Kick of Johan, Kiki yawn
- 28:16a cryptid described as a ghost owl with razor
- 28:19-sharp talons Short greenish gray hair and a
- 28:22strong odor of dead snakes. I don't know that
- 28:26I could identify that smell No, it's got to be
- 28:29a specific smell though. It has to be and specific
- 28:33enough that someone More than once because I
- 28:39know if you smell it once you'd be like, oh,
- 28:42yeah That's the smell of a dead animal in my
- 28:43mind Like, you smell it again, like, no, no,
- 28:45that's a distinct dead animal. Unless it is that
- 28:49distinct, that you're like, I will never forget
- 28:53the smell of dead snakes again, and that was
- 28:56for sure it. It is said to be deadly, partially
- 29:00ephemeral creature. Next cryptid is the Adamand
- 29:04Wood Owl, a mysterious owl -like creature reported
- 29:07in the dense forests of the Adamand Islands.
- 29:11As we can see, owls really have a huge imprint
- 29:15on cultures and also cryptids. They're just all
- 29:19over the place and I didn't get into it much
- 29:23but there does also seem to be a link to owls
- 29:26and high strangeness and synchronicities as well.
- 29:30Some seem to link seemingly ungraspable mystical
- 29:33links such as foreboding forewarnings or personal
- 29:37spiritual awakening which we also see in the
- 29:40folklore. Mike Clelland's research also points
- 29:42out that people who experience UFO sightings
- 29:45often report a sudden massive influx of owl sightings
- 29:50in their daily lives bordering on the supernatural.
- 29:53Owls appearing in times of prayer change including
- 29:57death into moments of significant impact. There
- 30:00are many people who tell stories about an owl
- 30:02that would follow them around town for several
- 30:05weeks or even months. They'd stay out in the
- 30:07front yard on a light post or in a tree and then
- 30:10would follow these people around town as they
- 30:13ran errands, never interacting with them directly
- 30:16but seemingly keeping an eye on them at all times
- 30:19of the day. This came up quite frequently as
- 30:22well with Mike Clellan that owls would appear
- 30:24to someone after the death of a loved one. He
- 30:27also connects them with UAPs and screen memories.
- 30:32Now something that he does talk a lot in his
- 30:34interviews I listen to quite a lot about this
- 30:37and synchronicities are a big part of his work
- 30:40with owls. A lot of people who said that they
- 30:44were interviewing him, they were reading his
- 30:46book, and all of a sudden they started seeing
- 30:49owls everywhere. Now, I was reading a lot of
- 30:52this, not his book, but I was listening to podcasts
- 30:56with him on. I've been looking at owls researching
- 30:59this. I will say I have not seen a single owl.
- 31:03So there's that. I don't really want to see an
- 31:06owl, so don't take that as an invitation, owls.
- 31:17So I just wanted to say that because literally
- 31:20on every interview people were like so I started
- 31:23looking at owls for our interview and then I
- 31:25all of a sudden saw an owl and he was like yep
- 31:27that's the synchronicity no owls here Another
- 31:31individual reports, What I want to read to you
- 32:01next and end this episode on is a couple of singular
- 32:0614 Accounts as well as a phantom and monsters
- 32:10account. Let's start with the singular 14 This
- 32:14one's a shorter one quote I had just gotten off
- 32:17of work and was walking with my friend toward
- 32:19the parking lot to go home as We walked we saw
- 32:22something fly over us at first it looked like
- 32:24a huge owl, but it was solid black The thing
- 32:27flew over us and then landed by the edge of the
- 32:30parking lot and was just standing there. We again
- 32:32thought it was an owl until the son of a bitch
- 32:35stood up. It was standing about seven feet tall.
- 32:38Right in the way of our car. My friend shrieked
- 32:41and that's when this I'm going to have to beep
- 32:45that out turned around and we saw two glowing
- 32:48red eyes that looked like they belong to the
- 32:50devil himself. That's when we both screamed and
- 32:54this demon spread his wings out lunched at us
- 32:56while screeching at us It sounded like a bunch
- 32:59of little girls all screaming at once geez and
- 33:02was the scariest thing I've ever heard We ran
- 33:04for the car and this sounds like an in -sync
- 33:07concert We ran from my car and this thing acted
- 33:13like it wanted to come after us as we ran to
- 33:15the car. It took a step in our direction before
- 33:18it took off into the air and was out of sight
- 33:20in about three seconds. We could still hear it
- 33:23screeching as it flew off into the night. I can
- 33:26tell you that I never felt so scared and all
- 33:28but pissed myself from fright. I thank the Lord
- 33:31for watching over us and not letting that thing
- 33:33attack us or drag us off to hell. Here's my final
- 33:38one. This one comes from Phantoms of Monsters,
- 33:41Lon Strickler, and I did confirm when I was on
- 33:45Singular 14, it is not Lon Strickler, but he
- 33:48works with them. So he has encounters on their
- 33:51website as well, which is why I said that wherever
- 33:54it came up last. Yeah, I can't remember where
- 33:56it came up either. No, but it did come up. It
- 33:59was the little people. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:02Yeah, so. That's what I'm talking about when
- 34:05I say that. This is the next encounter I live
- 34:08in El Paso, Texas and back in 2007 I moved to
- 34:11the lower valley for about seven months. I was
- 34:1416 at the time I was still trying to figure myself
- 34:17out and being the new kid made things rough.
- 34:20I got bullied a lot so I started sneaking out
- 34:23at night and walking around the apartment complex
- 34:25to clear my head. During those walks I saw all
- 34:28kinds of strange things. I would catch sight
- 34:30of a girl dressed in white. At times I saw flashes
- 34:34of what looked like a man hanging from a tree.
- 34:36There were shadows, odd lights, and other things
- 34:39I still cannot explain. The unsettling part is
- 34:42that I was not the only one seeing strange activity
- 34:44there. Other people in my family experienced
- 34:47things too but the one thing none of us have
- 34:49ever forgotten is the owls. About a week before
- 34:53we moved my best friend wanted to spend the night
- 34:55so we could hang out before I left. He ended
- 34:58up feeling sick and decided to go home so I walked
- 35:00him back. When I returned, I laid down on the
- 35:03couch and stared at the closed curtains. There
- 35:06was a light outside the window, so whenever somebody
- 35:08passed by, their silhouette would show through.
- 35:11As I lay there, I kept hearing what sounded like
- 35:14heavy wing flapping outside. I did not think
- 35:16much of it at first. I put on my earphones and
- 35:19listened to my iPod, still staring at the curtains
- 35:22out of boredom. Then I saw something that stopped
- 35:24me cold. A huge bird flew past the window right
- 35:28in front of me and turned into a woman. She stood
- 35:31there as if she knew I could see her. She did
- 35:34not speak, she just stood there for a moment
- 35:36then walked away. I could hear her footsteps
- 35:39fading into the empty stairwell outside my apartment.
- 35:42I kept that to myself for a long time because
- 35:44I did not want anyone to think I had lost my
- 35:46mind. Three days before we moved out I saw an
- 35:50owl perched on the trees outside my window. I
- 35:52tried not to focus on it, I just went on with
- 35:55my usual night walk. Then the night before we
- 35:58left for El Paso it happened again. This time
- 36:01I saw the owl transform into a dark -skinned
- 36:04woman, but instead of stopping she sprinted away.
- 36:07It looked like she was running from something
- 36:09or as if she was terrified and trying to escape
- 36:12danger. I never went outside to investigate,
- 36:15I was just a little kid and scared out of my
- 36:17mind. About four months after we moved, my mother
- 36:20called us into the living room to talk. That
- 36:23conversation gave me my sanity back. I finally
- 36:26knew I was not crazy. My mother, my brother,
- 36:29and I all saw the same thing, only at different
- 36:31times and in different places. My brother said
- 36:34that while walking home from a friend's house,
- 36:36he saw an owl turn into a woman and run off into
- 36:39a field. My mother said she had experienced it
- 36:42several times when coming home from late night
- 36:44shifts. Sometimes she saw it at a distance and
- 36:47other times only a few feet away. I still want
- 36:49to know what we saw. I want to know whether anyone
- 36:52else had encounters involving owls like this
- 36:54and whether there are folktales or legends that
- 36:56might explain it. I mean he could have opened
- 36:58a new tab and done it himself. So long then comments
- 37:02here are the closest parallels I found that are
- 37:04worth noting in this blog entry. Number one Borderland
- 37:08Lechuza tradition. La Lichusa is wildly described
- 37:12in Tejano and Mexican folklore as a malevolent
- 37:15or avenging owl woman, sometimes a witch, sometimes
- 37:18a wronged woman, and sometimes a cursed being.
- 37:22Modern summaries consistently describe the transformation
- 37:25between woman and owl especially at night. Number
- 37:28two, window and home proximity motive. PBS's
- 37:33transcript specifically mentions stories of large
- 37:35owls peeking into bedroom windows and families
- 37:38discovering unexplained scratches afterward.
- 37:41That window -side behaviour is strikingly close
- 37:44to the El Paso report where the witness saw the
- 37:46entity directly outside the curtains and heard
- 37:49it move into the stairwell, which we saw quite
- 37:51a few times in this episode as well. Number three,
- 37:55human -faced or human -linked bird reports in
- 37:57Texas. The 1975 Robstown flat became linked to
- 38:01Lelechusa when reports described a large bird
- 38:04with a human face. That matters because the El
- 38:08Paso witness did not merely see an owl. He reported
- 38:10a transitional form that resolved into a woman.
- 38:14Regional precedent exists for witnesses describing
- 38:16both bird and human traits in the same encounter.
- 38:204. Owl as an omen in older belief systems. Some
- 38:24indigenous Mesoamerican traditions associate
- 38:28owls with death, the underworld or urgent supernatural
- 38:31warning. That does not mean every owl sighting
- 38:35is paranormal, but it does explain why owl encounters
- 38:38in the borderlands carry symbolic weight far
- 38:41beyond ordinary wildlife observation. That's
- 38:45the end of the episode. I did want to point out
- 38:48on your thought of the Mothman as well, or it
- 38:50was my thought. There was a thought that came
- 38:52up in this episode about Mothman. They seem to
- 38:55be a part of the Chicago Mothman flap as well.
- 39:00People sighting owl -like creatures like this.
- 39:03Yeah, and the whole problem becomes it happens
- 39:06at night, so it's hard to really differentiate
- 39:09the dark flying thing. And the one that we heard
- 39:12that was screaming, like a million children,
- 39:15that one really was reminiscent of Mothman to
- 39:18me, and I could see how they would easily be
- 39:23intertwined with one another. They could be potentially
- 39:26the same creature, a couple of these. The shapeshifting
- 39:30one does seem to be its own thing. but I did
- 39:33want to point that out with Mothman because Lon
- 39:36has quite a few encounters in the Chicago area
- 39:39and I know that Mothman's fairly active around
- 39:43there. He likes to hang out there or something.
- 39:47Or people are up at night in Chicago. That could
- 39:49just be it. That's true. So yeah, that's my owl
- 39:52episode. Awesome. And I do think there'll be
- 39:54a sequel because I learned a bit about its involvement
- 39:58with Sasquatch sightings too. That is very interesting.
- 40:01Could be its own thing. That Sasquatch guy has
- 40:04a lot going on, I've learned. Because I have
- 40:06just recently been reading... And I'm sorry to
- 40:11say, I'm gonna have to bleep that. Which is a
- 40:16good book. And with that, I have been Taylor,
- 40:19here with Chelsea. We are Journey to the Fringe.
