- 1:21Speaker 2: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 1:24Speaker 2: to Disgraceland, the after party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 1:43Speaker 2: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 1:46Speaker 2: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 1:49Speaker 2: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 1:51Speaker 2: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 1:55Speaker 2: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 1:58Speaker 2: about Justin Timberlake's recent arrest, the Boston Celtics recent title,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and this week's new Disgrace, that episode on OJ Simpson.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And of course we've got your voicemails and texts and more,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and as always, a.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Whole lot of rosie. So this goes. Let's get into it.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Okay, I'm recording this after party bonus episode a day
- 2:30Speaker 2: earlier than I usually do. Got a medical procedure coming up.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Not the major gonna be okay, but it's just messing
- 2:36Speaker 2: up the schedule here a little bit. That means that
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'm recording this two days before its release. It's the
- 2:42Speaker 2: morning after the Boston Celtics just won their eighteenth title,
- 2:47Speaker 2: and I'd prefer today to sort of let my brain
- 2:50Speaker 2: hang out in the bliss of yet another Boston sports
- 2:53Speaker 2: team championship, thirteen of them, by the way, in the
- 2:56Speaker 2: last twenty four years. Suck at New York, suck at LA.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But I can't do that because Justin Timberlake just got
- 3:02Speaker 2: arrested last night for a DWI. And that's all people
- 3:05Speaker 2: in my algorithm and text threads want to talk about,
- 3:09Speaker 2: not all of it. There's some there's some good Celtics
- 3:11Speaker 2: talking there. Those of you who messaged me about the Celtics,
- 3:14Speaker 2: thank you very much. Not that I had anything to
- 3:16Speaker 2: do with the win, but.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's you know, these things happen.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Your team wins, team from your hometown wins, and it's
- 3:25Speaker 2: just like, I don't know, it's this bonding thing that happens. Obviously,
- 3:28Speaker 2: it's a very obvious thing, and you want to kind
- 3:30Speaker 2: of enjoy it. But this arrests, this JT arrest, I'm
- 3:34Speaker 2: annoyed by it. It's just now a DWI that's serious,
- 3:38Speaker 2: of course, but in the grand scheme of musicians, athletes,
- 3:41Speaker 2: and entertainers getting arrested for their actions behind the wheel
- 3:44Speaker 2: of an automobile. This seems kind of basic. JT was
- 3:48Speaker 2: arrested in Sag Harbor on Long Island. He refused the breathalyzer.
- 3:53Speaker 2: He reportedly stunk of alcohol. He claimed he had one martini.
- 3:58Speaker 2: He looks wasted in his mugshot. Now I know full
- 4:01Speaker 2: well it's possible to be wasted from one Jin martini,
- 4:05Speaker 2: especially if I'm making them or my dad. But anyways, JT,
- 4:08Speaker 2: like I said, he looks wasted in the mugshot, but
- 4:10Speaker 2: it's just a mug shot. New details are coming out
- 4:14Speaker 2: about his erratic driving, however, before getting pulled over. But really,
- 4:17Speaker 2: at this point, there's a lot of speculation, and of course,
- 4:20Speaker 2: like I said, my fees and dms are filled with
- 4:23Speaker 2: JT news today and I'm getting a lot of questions
- 4:25Speaker 2: about what it means. It's obvious why rock star entertainer
- 4:29Speaker 2: gets popped disgraceful minds want to know. I get it,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and I can appreciate it. But you know, the Celtics
- 4:34Speaker 2: eighteen banners.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It's kind of where my head's at today.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Speaking of which I should apologize to another JT Jason Tatum.
- 4:43Speaker 2: No one was a bigger doubter of Jason Tatum than
- 4:46Speaker 2: I was. No Boston fan. Anyways, I'm on record heavily
- 4:49Speaker 2: criticizing Tatum for not showing up when it counts, for
- 4:52Speaker 2: being a modern day two thousand and four Alex Rodriguez,
- 4:55Speaker 2: a pre two thousand and six Peyton Manning, not even
- 4:57Speaker 2: a twenty eleven Lebron James. Basically a guy I who,
- 5:01Speaker 2: in my estimation, turtled when the going got tough, when
- 5:03Speaker 2: the real champions show up and gritted out and put
- 5:06Speaker 2: their teams on their backs and dig in and got
- 5:08Speaker 2: out tough wins when it matters most. I had yet
- 5:11Speaker 2: to see Jason Tatum do that. In fact, I'd seen
- 5:13Speaker 2: him do the opposite. Okay, my annoyance was so strong
- 5:17Speaker 2: with Jason Tatum's unrealized potential that I was briefly driven
- 5:21Speaker 2: into the arms As many of you know, I was
- 5:23Speaker 2: briefly driven into the arms of Jimmy Butler, and for
- 5:25Speaker 2: half a minute thought that I was going to become
- 5:27Speaker 2: a Miami Heat fan. Up until this last NBA Finals game. Okay,
- 5:33Speaker 2: Tatum up to this point was living up to my
- 5:36Speaker 2: depiction of him, all right, don't talk to me about
- 5:38Speaker 2: his overall playoff stats. Brown was the one who led
- 5:41Speaker 2: the team, Jalen Brown in games one, two, and three.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Tatum didn't play well in Game four. I understood why
- 5:48Speaker 2: the rest of the team fell short, but I felt like,
- 5:51Speaker 2: given tatum struggles in the first three games, he, as
- 5:54Speaker 2: a real champion, should have put the team on his
- 5:56Speaker 2: back for Game four and executed the sweep. And I
- 5:58Speaker 2: was fully expecting Tatum to its turtle again in game five,
- 6:02Speaker 2: but the dude showed up man's size and put the
- 6:05Speaker 2: final dagger into Dallas And I was wrong. Okay, I
- 6:10Speaker 2: was wrong, but I'm not wrong about justin Timberlake. This
- 6:15Speaker 2: is a boring story.
- 6:17Speaker 1: People are going to.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Freak out because JT is a huge name, and then
- 6:21Speaker 2: no one's gonna remember this in the next forty eight hours,
- 6:23Speaker 2: which I suppose isn't a bad thing.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But for some.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Perspective, let's quickly look to history for just a second
- 6:31Speaker 2: here in the present, because that's kind of what we do.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Let's look to the past to understand the present, all right.
- 6:38Speaker 2: In nineteen eighty four, Vince Neil from Motley Crue got
- 6:41Speaker 2: wasted and went for a.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Ride with his buddy Razzle from Annoy Rocks.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Vince Neil crashed his car and killed his friend, and
- 6:47Speaker 2: Vince got off with a fine and a manslaughter charge
- 6:50Speaker 2: in twenty fifteen Sugar Night.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Sug Night is currently in jail for.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Running over two people in twenty fifteen in his car
- 6:57Speaker 2: and killing one of them. In nineteen sixty three, former
- 7:00Speaker 2: First Lady Laura Bush, long before she was First Lady,
- 7:03Speaker 2: broadsided a car when she ran a stop sign and
- 7:06Speaker 2: killed the seventeen year old driver of the other car.
- 7:08Speaker 2: In nineteen seventy, Keith Moon ran over and killed his
- 7:12Speaker 2: chauffeur while tried to escape a violent gang of menacing skinheads.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You can check out our episode on The Who for
- 7:18Speaker 2: more in that story. Also, I forgot to mention it,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but we have an episode on Motley Crue you can
- 7:22Speaker 2: hear all about the death of Razzle in Vince Nell's
- 7:25Speaker 2: car and a bunch of other stuff. All right, back
- 7:27Speaker 2: to this subject though, in a couple of weeks, I'm
- 7:29Speaker 2: going to be in Martha's vineyard again. I'm going to
- 7:31Speaker 2: make my annual pilgrimage to chap Equidick and to Dyke Bridge.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's the bridge, Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off
- 7:37Speaker 2: of and into the drink in nineteen sixty nine, where
- 7:40Speaker 2: he fled, leaving Mary Joe.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Capeciti to drown.
- 7:43Speaker 2: And of course, Caitlin Jenner in twenty fifteen, was involved
- 7:48Speaker 2: in a rear end collision that pushed the car in
- 7:51Speaker 2: front of her into oncoming traffic, killing a sixty nine
- 7:56Speaker 2: year old woman. A couple of months ago, when the
- 8:00Speaker 2: sun I'm sorry, I'm laughing, but you're gonna understand why.
- 8:03Speaker 2: A second and a couple of months ago, when the
- 8:04Speaker 2: subject of this week's Disgraceland episode, O J. Simpson died,
- 8:08Speaker 2: Caitlin Jenner took to x to tweet hashtag OJ Simpson
- 8:12Speaker 2: good riddance, to which one quick Wood Control replied, didn't
- 8:16Speaker 2: you kill someone too? So until justin Timberlake kills someone
- 8:21Speaker 2: or puts up a triple double against the MAVs, I don't.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Want to hear about him anymore.
- 8:25Speaker 2: What I do want to hear about is which charity
- 8:28Speaker 2: benefiting victims of drunk driving you'd like me to make
- 8:32Speaker 2: a donation too, And whether or not you have a
- 8:34Speaker 2: loved one's name you'd like me to make the donation
- 8:37Speaker 2: in honor of let's derive some light and some good
- 8:40Speaker 2: grace from all this darkness and disgrace that we are
- 8:43Speaker 2: trafficking in here in Disgraceland. Every week call me or
- 8:46Speaker 2: text me with your charitable organization of choice six one
- 8:50Speaker 2: seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail and text.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And if you don't have any suggestions, but you want
- 8:55Speaker 2: to have some fun this week, call me or text
- 8:57Speaker 2: me and let me know which disgrace to athletes you're
- 8:59Speaker 2: teaming up with for your fantasy charity golf tournament. You
- 9:02Speaker 2: can pick three disgraced athletes. Okay, these are for your foursome.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Who's it gonna be you? Oj Simpson, Scottie Scheffler not
- 9:09Speaker 2: really a disgrace, but he'd be great on anyone's team,
- 9:11Speaker 2: of course. Aaron Hernandez, Roger Clemens, Pete Rose. I like
- 9:15Speaker 2: the golfer Roger Clemens, Pete Rose, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Tyson.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I've been around Mike Tyson before. I don't want to
- 9:21Speaker 2: be anywhere around Mike Tyson anymore. Give me these three
- 9:23Speaker 2: disgraced athletes that you're hitting the links with in our
- 9:26Speaker 2: fantasy charity golf tournament.
- 9:28Speaker 1: The worst they do. Keep in mind, the worst they.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Do, the more they have to donate to the victims
- 9:33Speaker 2: of their heinous crime. Six one seven nine oh six
- 9:36Speaker 2: six six three eight voicemail and text. I'll be back
- 9:39Speaker 2: in a flash. All right, we are back, and I
- 10:02Speaker 2: want to talk about bad Lands. Bad Lands was, of course,
- 10:05Speaker 2: the spinoff show to Disgraceland that we launched a few
- 10:08Speaker 2: years ago. For those of you who have listened to
- 10:10Speaker 2: both shows, thank you. But you've probably noticed recently that
- 10:14Speaker 2: the bad Lands feed has looked a little different.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Here's the deal. There were two things to play.
- 10:19Speaker 2: One was that it didn't make sense anymore to limit
- 10:21Speaker 2: Disgraceland to just music. Music will always be my bread
- 10:26Speaker 2: and butter. It'll be the bread and butter of our team.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I work with a bunch of musicians, all right, That's
- 10:32Speaker 2: basically who makes up double Elvis or a bunch of
- 10:35Speaker 2: fans of music. However, it just became too much to
- 10:40Speaker 2: be running these two shows, running these two feeds where
- 10:43Speaker 2: the subject matter was actually very similar, the production was
- 10:46Speaker 2: very similar, the presentation was very similar, and my interest. Frankly,
- 10:51Speaker 2: they encompass not just like I mentioned before, not just music,
- 10:55Speaker 2: not just Hollywood, not just sports, all of it, and
- 10:59Speaker 2: a disgrace is the disgrace is a disgrace, so disgrace Land.
- 11:04Speaker 2: From now on, all of these subjects will be available
- 11:07Speaker 2: in the Disgraceland feed. For those who are wondering where
- 11:11Speaker 2: all the Badlands episodes have gone, We're going to continue
- 11:14Speaker 2: to roll these out as remastered episodes of Disgraceland. These
- 11:17Speaker 2: are being slightly reproduced, slightly rewritten, sometimes significantly. Actually I
- 11:24Speaker 2: didn't write a lot of those bad Lands episodes, and
- 11:27Speaker 2: I'm injecting myself into some of the archive episodes here
- 11:31Speaker 2: in my point of view, a little bit more strongly,
- 11:34Speaker 2: making them more Disgraceland, so that they will feel fresh,
- 11:37Speaker 2: they will feel like disgrace Land episodes, which they are okay,
- 11:41Speaker 2: like this week's episode on OJ Simpson and the recent
- 11:44Speaker 2: episodes on Marilyn Monroe in Heath Ledger. The simple fact
- 11:47Speaker 2: of the matter is we have a lot of new
- 11:50Speaker 2: listeners coming in. We're still growing despite being in this
- 11:53Speaker 2: game now for five years, and a lot of people
- 11:57Speaker 2: have no idea of our archive Disgraceland, nevermind in bad Land,
- 12:01Speaker 2: So we're rolling it all into one. Like I said,
- 12:03Speaker 2: it's just more manageable. For those of you who are
- 12:06Speaker 2: new to this Disgraceland feed who were only Badlands listeners, welcome.
- 12:10Speaker 2: We have a rich, lush archive for you to get
- 12:13Speaker 2: into here over one hundred and fifty episodes. I hope
- 12:16Speaker 2: you dig in. I hope you stick with us. We
- 12:19Speaker 2: have a lot in store for you guys coming up
- 12:21Speaker 2: in the future as well. Episodes on Bobby Brown, The
- 12:25Speaker 2: Talking Heads, Alfred Hitchcock, Donnie Hathaway, Al Pacino, Metallica. I'm
- 12:30Speaker 2: about to finish this episode. I'm writing it this week
- 12:32Speaker 2: on Lona del Rey Blink one eighty two Stoked. So
- 12:36Speaker 2: lots of stuff. Badlands is Disgraceland. It's all happening here
- 12:40Speaker 2: in this feed. Make sure you are following along, make
- 12:42Speaker 2: sure you are subscribed, because this is where you're going
- 12:44Speaker 2: to get all of our immersive storytelling from the dark
- 12:47Speaker 2: side of entertainment. All right, let's talk sources for this
- 12:51Speaker 2: week's episode on OJ Simpson. First of all, the OJ story,
- 12:55Speaker 2: the murder of his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson along
- 12:58Speaker 2: with her friend Ron Goldman, subsequent trial and acquittal of
- 13:01Speaker 2: OJ Simpson for those murders. It is one of the
- 13:04Speaker 2: biggest and most well known stories of our lifetime, or
- 13:08Speaker 2: my lifetime, I should say, also one of the most documented.
- 13:11Speaker 2: It was headline news for years, quite literally, and to
- 13:14Speaker 2: that end, we had great source material to pull from
- 13:17Speaker 2: to make this episode. Now, I did not want to
- 13:19Speaker 2: make a this is the story of what happened to
- 13:22Speaker 2: OJ Simpson when he got arrested and charged with murder
- 13:26Speaker 2: and went to trial. That's been done so many times,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and frankly, it's been done in incredible ways. One of
- 13:32Speaker 2: the greatest documentaries that I've ever seen is on this
- 13:35Speaker 2: subjects from the thirty for thirty series called OJ Simpson
- 13:38Speaker 2: Made in America.
- 13:39Speaker 1: If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Again.
- 13:43Speaker 2: This is not the story we told, but we did,
- 13:45Speaker 2: of course use this documentary for research. We also used
- 13:49Speaker 2: the scripted FC series to People versus OJ Simpson American
- 13:53Speaker 2: Crime Story, which I thought was fantastic. What we wanted
- 13:56Speaker 2: to do is tell you this OJ Simpson story from
- 13:58Speaker 2: a fresh angle, so as you know, if you've listened
- 14:01Speaker 2: to the episode already. To do this, we decided to
- 14:04Speaker 2: frame the narrative around the brazen two thousand and seven
- 14:07Speaker 2: heist that OJ Simpson orchestrated and took part in. This
- 14:11Speaker 2: is obviously after the murders, but this fascinated us because
- 14:16Speaker 2: you know, it's it's kind of OJ Simpson caught up
- 14:19Speaker 2: in his own version of a Coen Brothers movie with
- 14:21Speaker 2: these bumbling idiots for a crime crew who they're storming
- 14:24Speaker 2: this hotel room in Las Vegas trying to steal sports
- 14:27Speaker 2: memorabilia from these kind of low rent memorabilia dealers. It's
- 14:33Speaker 2: just it's so seedy and so Las Vegas. It's just
- 14:39Speaker 2: it's it's wild in its own way, and it felt
- 14:42Speaker 2: like a really great lens to use to look back
- 14:45Speaker 2: at the double murder of Nicole Brownsons and Ron Goldman
- 14:50Speaker 2: and OJ's trial and all that.
- 14:51Speaker 1: We just wanted to do it differently.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Like I said when I when I heard about this story,
- 14:55Speaker 2: it struck me as a Coen Brothers type of thing
- 14:58Speaker 2: because of the idiocy involved, and of course the violence
- 15:02Speaker 2: and the grime and the crime and the darkness. So
- 15:05Speaker 2: check it out if you have not already. Six one
- 15:08Speaker 2: seven nine six six six three eight. I asked some
- 15:14Speaker 2: questions earlier, a pretty serious one about the charitable organization
- 15:18Speaker 2: that you would like me to donate to to benefit
- 15:22Speaker 2: victims of drunk driving six one seven nine oh sixty
- 15:25Speaker 2: six six three eight. I'm interested to hear who you're recommending,
- 15:28Speaker 2: I asked. I asked sort of a cheeky question about
- 15:30Speaker 2: which disgraced athletes like OJ Simpson you would want to
- 15:36Speaker 2: have part of your fantasy celebrity golf for some But
- 15:40Speaker 2: I want to watch some of the older listeners in
- 15:43Speaker 2: the audience A question here. I want to know where
- 15:47Speaker 2: you were because this is our honestly, this is before
- 15:49Speaker 2: nine to eleven. The OJ White Bronco Chase was our
- 15:54Speaker 2: jfk assassination. So I want to know where you guys
- 15:57Speaker 2: were when Bob Costas interviewed the telecast for the NBA
- 16:02Speaker 2: Finals and brought us in live to OJ Simpson in
- 16:07Speaker 2: the back of Al Collings' White Bronco rolling down the
- 16:11Speaker 2: highway out in Los Angeles with a stream of cruisers
- 16:15Speaker 2: and helicopters chasing him.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I want to know where you were during the O. J.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Simpson White Bronco Chase and what you were doing. I'll
- 16:22Speaker 2: tell you where I was. I was at the White
- 16:24Speaker 2: Eagle in Wistern, Massachusetts, Uh, drinking beers at the bar
- 16:27Speaker 2: with my buddies, getting ready to go across the street
- 16:30Speaker 2: to Sir Morgan's cove and play a show with cast
- 16:33Speaker 2: Iron Hike. That's where I was six one seven nine
- 16:36Speaker 2: oh six six six three eight.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Where were you during O. J.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Simpson's infamous White Bronco chase, Give me called voicemail text
- 16:44Speaker 2: let me know, just like ed Noar in the four
- 16:47Speaker 2: to oh six, Hey.
- 16:49Speaker 3: J Edna were calling from the four oh six. Responding
- 16:53Speaker 3: to your question about which which athletes would have been
- 16:56Speaker 3: good rock stars, one guy comes to mind, Brian Bosworth,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I think, although when it comes to which rock stars
- 17:06Speaker 3: towards a Billy Vanilli film anyway, you a great Josh
- 17:11Speaker 3: always and.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah man Brian Bosworth.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Of course, except for that little bit with Bo Jackson
- 17:18Speaker 2: steamrolling him on Monday Night football, not really a rock
- 17:22Speaker 2: star moment.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But I hear you.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I get you three oh two right saying Hey, happy
- 17:26Speaker 2: Father's Day, Jake, you got a three to two, thank you,
- 17:28Speaker 2: and uh yeah, happy belated Father's Day to all the
- 17:32Speaker 2: dad's out there in disco Land. Nine oh nine rights
- 17:35Speaker 2: and Jake, you magnificent bastard. Golfer John Day is the
- 17:39Speaker 2: greatest example of an athlete that has all the feral
- 17:42Speaker 2: narcissistic animal traits of a rock star. He smokes and
- 17:46Speaker 2: drinks during tournaments. He was in a love triangle with
- 17:49Speaker 2: his caddy. He played a round shirtless and without shoes.
- 17:52Speaker 2: He threw punches in the World Series of Golf back
- 17:54Speaker 2: in the nineties. He got hauled off the jail after
- 17:57Speaker 2: he passed out at a Hooters restaurant. Eh and he's
- 18:00Speaker 2: actually released a couple of albums. He's a train wreck
- 18:03Speaker 2: worthy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rock
- 18:06Speaker 2: a ROLLA Scott from the nine to oh nine Scott
