Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: SEC vs. LSU Goes Nuclear, Dabo Swinney Under Fire & NFL Week 1 Begins | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, simply put, yesterday afternoon, college football went to
- 0:04Speaker 1: hell in a handbasket. True or not? I mean, it's
- 0:08Speaker 1: kind of a crazy day. And then by the time
- 0:10Speaker 1: we got to nightfall, things settled down. And as we
- 0:13Speaker 1: wake up on a Wednesday, we're starting to focus towards
- 0:17Speaker 1: football again. We got the NFL starting tonight. But just quickly,
- 0:21Speaker 1: yesterday afternoon. So as the show's winding down yesterday in
- 0:26Speaker 1: our four hours of the next round here, The SEC
- 0:29Speaker 1: is calling a meeting for Thursday to vote on expelling LSU.
- 0:34Speaker 1: A lot of key rattling, saber rattling, more aggressive than keys. Yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I'd say saber. Yeah. And then LSU fills out their
- 0:44Speaker 1: 105-man roster and does not put Daquan Wright and Zavian
- 0:49Speaker 1: Harris on it, the two former NFL players. And now
- 0:53Speaker 1: those two guys are threatening to go back to court
- 0:57Speaker 1: and in Baton Rouge to hold LSU in contempt of.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Court.
- 1:03Speaker 1: This is what you get. That's right. The rabbit's got
- 1:05Speaker 1: the gun now.
- 1:06Speaker 3: You play chicken and you talk to these guys and
- 1:09Speaker 3: you get them like they were probably going to be
- 1:11Speaker 3: waived anyway.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 3: But you tell them they've got a landing spot and
- 1:15Speaker 3: then they don't. And it's almost like LSU was dangling
- 1:19Speaker 3: or Lane Kiffin and the LSU president were dangling these
- 1:22Speaker 3: two kids. just to show how much power LSU had,
- 1:26Speaker 3: but they really didn't in the end of it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:28Speaker 3: This whole thing was weird. They were never going to play,
- 1:30Speaker 3: it looks like. I don't know what the point was.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Can I ask this, though? Just full disclosure, if you're
- 1:38Speaker 1: new to the show, I grew up an Alabama fan,
- 1:41Speaker 1: so lifelong Alabamian. I lived two years in Kentucky. I've
- 1:45Speaker 1: covered the SEC for over 30 years. What LSU.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Has actually done not what they claimed they were going
- 1:56Speaker 1: to do, but what LSU has actually done compared to
- 2:00Speaker 1: other incidents in the history of sec football and basketball.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I I've never heard of, of getting to this point
- 2:09Speaker 1: of saber rattling from the sec against LSU of talking expulsion.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I mean, just let's go through the history of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: illegal pavements, uh, Hell, what Will Wade did at LSU
- 2:23Speaker 1: seemed a lot more aggressive than this. He was on
- 2:26Speaker 1: an FBI wiretap.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I mean, really, the only thing we've ever seen like
- 2:29Speaker 3: this is SMU. That goes back to the old Southwest Conference.
- 2:35Speaker 3: This whole thing... I don't understand how it accelerated to
- 2:38Speaker 3: this point on the SEC side either.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I think I do. I think I do. Tell me,
- 2:43Speaker 1: is it because of the attitude and gravitas that LSU
- 2:47Speaker 1: approaches with? This is just my assessment of the situation
- 2:51Speaker 1: based on people I've talked to. I've heard enough people
- 2:54Speaker 1: say this that I think this is the real story.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Is this a big topic on the golf course? No,
- 2:59Speaker 1: this is not golf course discussion. This is actual discussion.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I'm just wondering where you hear it.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, just from people. It's just people talking, people in
- 3:05Speaker 1: the SEC. This guy's on his phone a lot. He's
- 3:10Speaker 1: either on the golf course or on the phone. He's
- 3:12Speaker 1: working sources. My wife, when she gets my phone to
- 3:14Speaker 1: do something, she'll say, hey, let me see your phone.
- 3:17Speaker 1: She's looking for a photo or she's trying to... Yes,
- 3:20Speaker 1: she is. She's like, your phone gives me anxiety. She
- 3:26Speaker 1: said the amount because I'm constantly getting like emails, text
- 3:32Speaker 1: or some sort of Twitter alert. Right. Yeah. We have
- 3:36Speaker 1: a saying on the show. We do humble brags all
- 3:37Speaker 1: the time. Is this Brown? Because I used to be
- 3:40Speaker 1: a humble brag. There's no way that's a humble brag.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I don't know why that's a humble brag.
- 3:44Speaker 1: There's no way it's a humble brag. So many people
- 3:45Speaker 1: contacting you. You're getting emails and stuff. Emails are like
- 3:49Speaker 1: Samford just finished football practice. We're letting everybody know our
- 3:52Speaker 1: UAB basketball is going to play a game and Bermuda
- 3:55Speaker 1: in November. We're just letting everybody know. I finished four
- 3:58Speaker 1: hours of golf yesterday without looking at my phone. I
- 4:00Speaker 1: picked up my phone. I had zero texts, zero emails,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and zero calls. I was like, well, you play golf
- 4:05Speaker 1: with your friends every day. I'm like, that's right.
- 4:08Speaker 3: They're talking to you. Who else is going to reach
- 4:09Speaker 3: out to you?
- 4:10Speaker 1: There was a time I would have been contacted by
- 4:12Speaker 1: two news directors, somebody in sales or something. Now, nobody calls.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Definitely not a humble brag, but I do get a
- 4:18Speaker 1: lot of alerts. I would celebrate that, Jim, that you've
- 4:21Speaker 1: gotten to that point in your life. yeah yeah yeah
- 4:22Speaker 1: that sounds nice yeah i mean just look right here
- 4:25Speaker 1: i mean it seems nice until you're there guys just
- 4:28Speaker 1: since the show started you know i've got two texts
- 4:30Speaker 1: right here and a bunch of twitter notifications right i
- 4:32Speaker 1: probably get too many twitter notifications well i have my
- 4:34Speaker 1: notifications turned off so i start with that yeah i
- 4:36Speaker 1: have all my notifications so anyway with all that said
- 4:39Speaker 1: yes this is off the golf course these people i'm
- 4:42Speaker 1: talking to in the s60 here's what my assessment of
- 4:43Speaker 1: the situation I think Greg Sankey and the SEC think
- 4:48Speaker 1: that the Louisiana governor has far too much influence over
- 4:52Speaker 1: LSU and LSU football from the outside looking in. Do
- 4:55Speaker 1: you think that's probably the case?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yes, for sure. And politicians in general. And if Greg
- 5:00Speaker 1: Sankey feared that it was the president that was out
- 5:03Speaker 1: of control or the athletic director that was out of control.
- 5:06Speaker 1: He had some recourse. He's got no recourse against the
- 5:09Speaker 1: governor of Louisiana. What do you do? He doesn't have
- 5:11Speaker 1: recourse against the governor. He's got no authority over the
- 5:14Speaker 1: governor of Louisiana. So I think Greg Sankey felt like
- 5:18Speaker 1: this was the best way to rein this whole thing
- 5:20Speaker 1: in was to go nuclear, which they did.
- 5:22Speaker 3: No, and look, and that's, I mean, that's a good argument.
- 5:26Speaker 3: That makes a lot of sense. Sankey better hope he's
- 5:29Speaker 3: never behind the wheel of a car in Louisiana.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Don't speed Louisiana for Greg Sankey, no doubt.
- 5:34Speaker 3: You think there's any way he can get that ticket tossed?
- 5:36Speaker 1: There is a chance he may not go back to
- 5:38Speaker 1: Louisiana again. His last visit wasn't pleasant. I want you
- 5:41Speaker 1: to listen. Now, I'll go ahead and tell you up front,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and if you're new to the show, I'm a moderate.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I don't really like Democrats or Republicans, and I don't
- 5:49Speaker 1: like politics.
- 5:50Speaker 3: You're rolling out your whole bio. Do we get to
- 5:51Speaker 3: chime in on your bio?
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm a married Southerner, 28.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Sorry, 28 years.
- 5:59Speaker 1: But I love this guy. He's funny. This dude's funny.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I know nothing about politics. I love this guy because
- 6:03Speaker 1: I've worked in the media my whole life. No, this
- 6:05Speaker 1: guy's funny. I've seen a lot of this guy. He
- 6:07Speaker 1: is Senator John Kennedy. Surprising name. Not going to be
- 6:10Speaker 1: who you think it is when he pops up. No relation.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, who's always entertaining when he's
- 6:16Speaker 1: on a committee and all that. And he's a great soundbite.
- 6:19Speaker 1: When word trickled into, I guess he was in Washington.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Maybe he was in somewhere in Louisiana. I don't know
- 6:23Speaker 1: where it was yesterday. But this is from Louisiana First.
- 6:26Speaker 1: A big gaggle of reporters. And word leaks down or
- 6:31Speaker 1: up to Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, and they say, hey,
- 6:36Speaker 1: did you hear that the SEC is holding a vote
- 6:38Speaker 1: on Thursday that if LSU is not in line, they're
- 6:42Speaker 1: going to vote to expel them from the SEC? And
- 6:45Speaker 1: Senator John Kennedy had this to say.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Bone deep down to the marrow stupid. I've got rocks
- 6:53Speaker 2: in my driveway that are smarter than that. That's true.
- 6:57Speaker 2: They're not going to throw LSU out of the SEC.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Let me tell you something.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I and a lot of other people in the United
- 7:07Speaker 2: States Congress will be on them like a hobo on
- 7:12Speaker 2: a ham sandwich.
- 7:14Speaker 1: LSU hasn't done anything wrong.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It's called a court of law. God made courts to
- 7:21Speaker 2: decide disputes. Now, whether you agree with what LSU did
- 7:25Speaker 2: or disagree, we did the right thing by going to court.
- 7:29Speaker 2: We didn't just do stuff.
- 7:31Speaker 3: We went to court.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And we're going to abide by the court decision. But
- 7:35Speaker 2: they're not going to start all this stuff. I mean,
- 7:40Speaker 2: if I have something to say about it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah. By the way, door prices. The best part. Check
- 7:47Speaker 1: your numbers. The sellout of the day at college football
- 7:49Speaker 1: has got a woman in the background going, if you've
- 7:51Speaker 1: registered for door prices.
- 7:53Speaker 3: A hobo on a ham sandwich. I would have got
- 7:55Speaker 3: a hobo on a handle of vodka.
- 7:56Speaker 1: A hobo on a ham sandwich.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I got what he was saying.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Listen, listen. And to all the people, I mean, Clay's
- 8:04Speaker 1: got a list out, and it's a fantastic list. I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 1: we can show it. Clay Travis of Sport and State
- 8:12Speaker 1: put out five Teams that if LSU gets expelled, who
- 8:17Speaker 1: Clay wants to see in? He put North Carolina one,
- 8:21Speaker 1: Virginia two, Virginia Tech three, Florida State four, Miami five.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Virginia Tech?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Wow. Well, Virginia Tech and NC State, remember, always, if
- 8:30Speaker 1: they expanded again, were always the two hot topics for
- 8:32Speaker 1: the SEC.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Clay's got a relationship with James Franklin.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say this. I would say this about,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I rebuttaled Clay's list. I said, here's a better list. One,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Louisiana State. two if lsu's kicked out let's just call
- 8:45Speaker 1: them louisiana state let's fertilize them by saying you can't
- 8:48Speaker 1: call yourself lsu anymore you gotta go to c number
- 8:52Speaker 1: one because louis louisiana state lsu they're not getting kicked
- 8:56Speaker 1: out they were never getting kicked out never getting kicked
- 8:58Speaker 1: out this was this was the nuclear option i mean
- 9:02Speaker 1: i personally believe it is my personal belief greg sankey
- 9:05Speaker 1: thinks that The governor of Louisiana is running LSU athletics,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and he thinks that is a problem. He cannot do
- 9:12Speaker 1: anything to penalize the governor. So what do you do?
- 9:14Speaker 1: You penalize the governor's pet project, which is LSU football.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And this was the threat to see if LSU blinked.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And by the way, LSU blinked. They did. They blinked.
- 9:23Speaker 1: They have not put these guys on the roster. They
- 9:25Speaker 1: filled out their official roster. It is done. Historical equivalence
- 9:30Speaker 1: to this is the LSU missiles crisis. That's right. And
- 9:33Speaker 1: Greg Sankey is the other John Kennedy. sitting in the
- 9:36Speaker 1: White House, and he's like, okay, we're going to put
- 9:40Speaker 1: up our ships. What are you going to do? And
- 9:43Speaker 1: LSU came up to the American ships, or in this case,
- 9:45Speaker 1: the SEC ships, and turned around. Turned around and went
- 9:48Speaker 1: back to port. Went back to Moscow, or in this case.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Baton Rouge. How many teams in the SEC realistically can
- 9:53Speaker 3: win the national championship?
- 9:54Speaker 1: There's five or six. Six or seven? After week one,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I would say just watching week one, LSU, Georgia, Alabama.
- 10:01Speaker 1: You're going to pick at somebody. Oklahoma, Texas, LSU. Did
- 10:06Speaker 1: you say Alabama?
- 10:07Speaker 4: I did.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I think I'm done. Okay, so with that said, if
- 10:10Speaker 1: you go different.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Tiers like realistic teams to win the national championship, Georgia, Texas, LSU.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I might throw Oklahoma. You don't see Alabama? I might
- 10:23Speaker 3: throw Oklahoma. I've got to see a little bit more material.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I do not think Alabama can win a national championship
- 10:28Speaker 3: this year.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I got them in the semifinals in our preseason.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I mean, I think that they're going to get to
- 10:32Speaker 3: the postseason at 10-2, but I don't think they can
- 10:34Speaker 3: make that run.
- 10:34Speaker 1: With all that said, do you think the SEC.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I've got to see a little bit more on that offense, too.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Bear tight defense, man. That defense looked tight.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But right now, I feel good about saying three, maybe
- 10:46Speaker 3: four teams. The last thing the SEC wants to do
- 10:48Speaker 3: is boot out. one of the potential teams that can
- 10:51Speaker 3: win a national championship.
- 10:52Speaker 1: They're not going to do that.
- 10:53Speaker 3: No, I know they're not, but I'm saying that. No,
- 10:55Speaker 3: you're right. It doesn't make any sense on any level.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I can't believe this is a conversation. And you know
- 11:00Speaker 3: what sucks? Is we're all pulling against LSU this year,
- 11:03Speaker 3: and now you have lit another fire under them.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 11:06Speaker 1: The LSU fan base feels like it's 1 versus 15
- 11:09Speaker 1: right now. I mean, I've watched the LSU fan base
- 11:12Speaker 1: react to this. I've watched friends of the show, like,
- 11:15Speaker 1: Level-headed people like Jacob Hester. Y'all would call Jacob Hester level-headed, right?
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I saw Ben McDonald last night. Ben McDonald, the buzz
- 11:21Speaker 1: cut former pitcher that's on ESPN. What did he say?
- 11:25Speaker 1: What did Jacob say? You can tell in the tone
- 11:28Speaker 1: of their social media reaction that they feel like, hey,
- 11:32Speaker 1: we're being picked on. everybody's doing something, but why are
- 11:38Speaker 1: you coming after us? And they feel like it's the
- 11:41Speaker 1: SEC versus them right now. I understand that. As I
- 11:44Speaker 1: started off saying, there have been, like even in LSU history,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Will Wade was a lot more sinister to me than this.
- 11:53Speaker 1: By the rules of the day for Will Wade, he's
- 11:55Speaker 1: on an FBI wiretap. That's pretty serious. Alabama played Charles
- 12:00Speaker 1: Pediaco last year and suffered no penalty. And that's And so,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know, there was never a threat to take any
- 12:09Speaker 1: money away from Alabama. I think you're getting caught up
- 12:11Speaker 1: in the accusation, though, and not the real reason Greg
- 12:13Speaker 1: Sankey is doing it. No, no, no, that's right. And
- 12:15Speaker 1: that's why I think LSU fans are upset because they
- 12:18Speaker 1: look at that and they're like, well, what is the
- 12:20Speaker 1: material difference in us trying and not even rostering former
- 12:24Speaker 1: NFL guys in Alabama playing a guy that was in
- 12:26Speaker 1: the G League? And that's their argument. The actual crime
- 12:29Speaker 1: compared to, but it really is like, almost discipline your
- 12:33Speaker 1: kids and you like spank them and the kid says, well,
- 12:36Speaker 1: that didn't hurt. Yeah. Well, then what do you do next?
- 12:39Speaker 3: You take a wrench to them.
- 12:41Speaker 1: At some point, yeah. I mean, you pick up that switch,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I guess. If you're Greg Sankey, you tell them we'll
- 12:47Speaker 1: kick you out of the house, you can never come back.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And then you see if they change their behavior. And
- 12:50Speaker 1: that's what I think Greg Sankey was doing. And I think, honestly,
- 12:54Speaker 1: he's seeing if the governor of Louisiana changes his behavior
- 12:57Speaker 1: because I think he and SEC presidents feel like It
- 13:01Speaker 1: is a dangerous road when a state official with the
- 13:05Speaker 1: power that he has and the money that he has
- 13:08Speaker 1: access to gets this heavily involved in an athletic program. 100%.
- 13:12Speaker 1: In a day and age where money speaks volumes, absolutely.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And to your point, it may not even be about this. It's, okay,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it's what's next. That's right. If I don't stop it now. Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 1: If it's not this, then what's next? Almost like back
- 13:26Speaker 1: to the missile crisis in Cuba. Well, you can't let
- 13:29Speaker 1: the Russians build those missiles down there because what's next?
- 13:31Speaker 1: Then they're going to hold something else over your head
- 13:33Speaker 1: for the rest of time. Just fascinating that all that
- 13:37Speaker 1: is going on. And LSU may be the best football
- 13:40Speaker 1: team in the country. I think they were after week one. Okay,
- 13:44Speaker 1: let me ask that. As we get going today, our
- 13:46Speaker 1: show brought to you with our great partners from Hard
- 13:49Speaker 1: Rock Bet. You may know the name Hard Rock. We
- 13:51Speaker 1: all do. I had T-shirts back in the day. but
- 13:54Speaker 1: now Hard Rock Bet is a sportsbook app as well.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet is Florida's only legal sportsbook and is
- 14:00Speaker 1: therefore the most trustworthy option in the market. Hard Rock

- 14:19Speaker 1: that's for all customers, not just new customers. And if
- 14:22Speaker 1: you're in Florida... Running out of time today. NFL starts tonight.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Make sure you take advantage of the NFL Survivor Contest.
- 14:29Speaker 1: We're actually going to make our pick on the Survivor
- 14:31Speaker 1: Contest live on the air a little bit later on.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Pick one team to win each week. Last standing survivor,
- 14:37Speaker 1: share the $ 2 million prize. Best place to get all
- 14:40Speaker 1: the information and sign up, hardrock.bet backslash clay, hardrock.bet backslash clay.
- 14:48Speaker 1: So if I asked you your best team coming out
- 14:52Speaker 1: of week one, and Just the team you saw in
- 14:54Speaker 1: week one that was the best performance. So I put
- 14:56Speaker 1: LSU number one, Lance, if I were voting. And I
- 15:00Speaker 1: understand your reaction to it. I laughed at you, but
- 15:04Speaker 1: you're right when you said, well, what about Oklahoma or Georgia?
- 15:08Speaker 1: And I said, they all play crappy teams. You said
- 15:09Speaker 1: so did LSU. And you're absolutely right. LSU did. They
- 15:12Speaker 1: played a team that might get bowl eligible. Did you
- 15:14Speaker 1: play football? They give you 12 games. What's his name?
- 15:18Speaker 3: Chapel.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Chapel.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Chapel. Chapel Brownlee.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Did you play football?
- 15:21Speaker 3: Did you play football? Right when I got in the
- 15:23Speaker 3: car yesterday when I was leaving here, the guys on
- 15:27Speaker 3: College Sports Network or whatever.
- 15:28Speaker 1: SiriusXM, Dusty, and the girl, Nicole.
- 15:31Speaker 3: And they were talking about that situation. And they say
- 15:35Speaker 3: they have that guy on a lot. I don't know
- 15:37Speaker 3: who the guy is.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Chappell, not Chappell Rohn, the singer. No, Chappell something.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Pink pony.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Chappell something. He covers LSU, and Dabo didn't like his question.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Covers Clemson. Yeah, versus Clemson. Excuse me, you, you. I know.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Y'all got to ask him questions. Chapel, you're the gotcha guy.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You're the gotcha guy. You got to.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Stir it up.
- 15:58Speaker 1: We really should send a next round t-shirt that says
- 16:00Speaker 1: the gotcha guy to Chapel. Let him wear it to
- 16:02Speaker 1: the next one. Chapel Fowler, by the way. Chapel Fowler.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Thank you, Scott.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Hearing that again outside of our show when they played it,
- 16:09Speaker 3: Dabo looks like an idiot.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to get to that coming up again.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Because Sab only made one mistake for me, and that's
- 16:14Speaker 1: the football part. But anyway.
- 16:17Speaker 3: He had that in his holster.
- 16:19Speaker 1: He did, for sure. It's the go-to. People that play football,
- 16:22Speaker 1: it's always the go-to. Did you play? Did you play? Oh,
- 16:24Speaker 1: so you can't possibly. You know what I always say
- 16:26Speaker 1: to that? You can't possibly be a fan. I love
- 16:28Speaker 1: it when somebody, like on social media, like you'll make
- 16:30Speaker 1: just an obvious observation, like– You know, Bryce Underwood, not
- 16:34Speaker 1: a very good quarterback. You know, I've got a year
- 16:38Speaker 1: and a game of Bryce Underwood. He's not a very
- 16:39Speaker 1: good quarterback. You guys would all agree. And I think
- 16:41Speaker 1: you thought he was going to be this year, Lance.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I thought he got the right guy coming in because
- 16:45Speaker 3: we saw what Devin Dampier was able to do at
- 16:47Speaker 3: Utah last year. So I was very, very surprised it
- 16:50Speaker 3: doesn't get any easier, obviously, this week.
- 16:52Speaker 1: So I don't think Bryce Underwood's a good quarterback. You
- 16:53Speaker 1: say that and people are like, well, you didn't play ball.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You didn't play ball. And I'll go look at, like,
- 16:58Speaker 1: their Twitter feed and they're bitching about President Biden and
- 17:01Speaker 1: President Trump. I'm like, well, you weren't president. Yeah. You
- 17:04Speaker 1: never said in the White House. Yeah, you weren't president,
- 17:06Speaker 1: so you can sit there and complain about the president,
- 17:08Speaker 1: but I can't complain. I can't make an obvious observation
- 17:11Speaker 1: about Bryce Underwood. You've missed an eight-foot putt. I mean,
- 17:15Speaker 1: get off of Snedeker's back. I just hope Chappell sits
- 17:18Speaker 1: on the front row. You can tell he's sitting on
- 17:19Speaker 1: the front row.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Because I remember he had a comment for Chappell a
- 17:22Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago, and he was on the front row.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Chappell better be on the front row. He can't go
- 17:27Speaker 3: and be intimidated at all.
- 17:29Speaker 1: He's not. I mean, that's obviously– I mean, everybody's got
- 17:32Speaker 1: one or two. I mean, that's where the clicks are.
- 17:35Speaker 1: The front row? The clicks on the front row? I mean,
- 17:39Speaker 1: it was a fair question, I thought. No, when I
- 17:41Speaker 1: heard it again, it was a fair question.
- 17:43Speaker 3: You know, my point was, maybe you don't ask this
- 17:46Speaker 3: after the first game, but the more you hear it,
- 17:48Speaker 3: I mean, it does make sense. And especially where Dabo.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Where he has planted his flag on, hey, I'm not
- 17:54Speaker 3: going to recruit like this.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I'm sorry I threw that out there in response. You
- 17:57Speaker 1: were going to make a point. No, I was just saying,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I know a lot of teams play crappy teams. I
- 18:01Speaker 1: agree with you, Lance. A lot of teams play crappy teams.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I think Clemson would beat Tennessee State's eyes out. I
- 18:07Speaker 1: think Clemson would beat, who did Ohio State play? Ball
- 18:09Speaker 1: State's eyes out.
- 18:10Speaker 5: LSU.
- 18:10Speaker 1: You're saying Clemson. No, I'm saying Clemson was the opponent.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I think they would beat all these opponents. They're better
- 18:16Speaker 1: than all those opponents.
- 18:17Speaker 3: The most impressive team was LSU, based on circumstances, based
- 18:20Speaker 3: on all the hype You know, they could only go
- 18:23Speaker 3: out and probably embarrass themselves based on circumstances. And they
- 18:28Speaker 3: went out and completely embarrassed Clemson. And there's so much
- 18:31Speaker 3: buzz going on. People really outside of chapel haven't really
- 18:34Speaker 3: questioned Debo Swinney. It's like a secondary story. If everything
- 18:39Speaker 3: was equal, like if there was no if this was
- 18:41Speaker 3: a Brian Kelly LSU team, the narrative would be, OK,
- 18:45Speaker 3: this could be LSU's year, but even bigger. Like, the
- 18:48Speaker 3: game has passed Abobai. I have more questions here, but
- 18:50Speaker 3: I would, other than LSU, I would agree LSU. I
- 18:53Speaker 3: would throw Miami into that conversation.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and it gets lost a little bit because, A,
- 18:57Speaker 1: it was West Coast and Lance was on Friday night,
- 19:00Speaker 1: which I don't know what the Friday night ratings are,
- 19:02Speaker 1: but it was off Saturday. It was off Broadway. But
- 19:05Speaker 1: Miami was dang impressive at Stanford.
- 19:07Speaker 3: They were impressive, but I saw some holes in the
- 19:10Speaker 3: defense a little bit. Corey Heatherman's defense was dominant last year,
- 19:13Speaker 3: and I just wonder what they had one sack, two
- 19:16Speaker 3: tackles for loss. When you lose Mazzador and Bain, we
- 19:19Speaker 3: talked about in the offseason, as good as this offense
- 19:22Speaker 3: can be, they're not going to get that pass rush.
- 19:24Speaker 3: I've got to see somebody identify as a guy that
- 19:26Speaker 3: really off the edge is going to be able to
- 19:29Speaker 3: dominate game in, game out. That's what– you guys correct
- 19:33Speaker 3: me if I'm wrong– The reason Miami made that run
- 19:36Speaker 3: in the postseason was because of that defense.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Defense of Malachi Toney. That's right. That's right. That was
- 19:39Speaker 1: really it. And they were able to run the ball.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You've got a little runway to find those next guys.
- 19:45Speaker 1: That's what college football is always about. That turnover is
- 19:47Speaker 1: so big. is finding the guys to follow Giants. And
- 19:51Speaker 1: they don't have to be Bain and Mesador. They just
- 19:54Speaker 1: have to be better than maybe what you saw against Stanford.
- 19:57Speaker 1: They don't have to be up to the level of
- 19:58Speaker 1: Bain and Mesador.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Look, Shannon Dawson did a great job with the offense
- 20:02Speaker 3: the last couple of years. And we go back to
- 20:03Speaker 3: when Cam Ward, I mean, the number one overall pick,
- 20:06Speaker 3: how dominant that kid was. but they couldn't get off
- 20:09Speaker 3: the field. They were winning games 40 to 39 or
- 20:11Speaker 3: losing games 40 to 39. And we talked about if
- 20:15Speaker 3: they ever improved their defense, which they did last year.
- 20:17Speaker 3: So I think the offense is a little bit better.
- 20:19Speaker 3: It's more explosive like the Cam Ward offense. But the
- 20:23Speaker 3: defense has come back to earth, and I just wonder
- 20:25Speaker 3: if that gets them at some point. With all that said,
- 20:28Speaker 3: their schedule is an absolute joke.
- 20:29Speaker 1: When we come back, I had other questions for you here.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Worst overrated surprise in the best game of the weekend,
- 20:36Speaker 1: if we all agree, maybe throw out some alternates there.
- 20:39Speaker 1: We'll give Dabo some advice how to handle the rest
- 20:44Speaker 1: of this year in our next segment as well. It's
- 20:48Speaker 1: the next round. We're presented by Hard Rock Bets, and
- 20:51Speaker 1: we're right here on Sporting State. All right, let's do
- 20:55Speaker 1: the Dabo thing here and just maybe offer some advice.
- 20:59Speaker 1: If you can give me, cut 12, Tyler, if you will.
- 21:03Speaker 1: This is yesterday. We played it in the next round
- 21:05Speaker 1: part of the show as it came down late in
- 21:07Speaker 1: the show. But Dabo's weekly news conference, his first one
- 21:11Speaker 1: coming after the game against LSU, and Chappell's the guy
- 21:15Speaker 1: again who covers Clemson. This is what Dabo said, and
- 21:20Speaker 1: I want you guys to listen and then Think about
- 21:22Speaker 1: all that Dabo has accomplished at a Clemson. Think about
- 21:27Speaker 1: where it's gone the last few years. And then I
- 21:29Speaker 1: want a serious question to give advice to our friend
- 21:34Speaker 1: Dabo Sweeney about how to handle the rest of this
- 21:37Speaker 1: year and maybe the landing of his Clemson legacy if
- 21:42Speaker 1: you don't think it can ever be good again. And
- 21:44Speaker 1: remember what Clemson was before Dabo took over and built
- 21:47Speaker 1: this thing up. Here's Dabo yesterday. Do you regret anything
- 21:50Speaker 1: about your off-season roster.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Construction right now? Chapel, you come with all these questions.
- 21:57Speaker 5: I'll tell you, you're the gotcha guy. No, I don't.
- 22:01Speaker 5: I don't, man. I regret being 0-1-1 right now.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I regret that.
- 22:05Speaker 6: But, no, we're– can you ask me that at the
- 22:10Speaker 6: end of the season? You know, the season isn't over.
- 22:12Speaker 6: I mean, we've got one game. We've got 11 more.
- 22:14Speaker 5: What if we go 11-1-1? You promised me you asked
- 22:18Speaker 5: me that then?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I'll answer it.
- 22:20Speaker 5: All right.
- 22:20Speaker 6: But I'm not answering questions like that, you know, Chapel.
- 22:23Speaker 6: I know that's your role and that's in this environment,
- 22:26Speaker 6: you know, to be the guy that wants to create
- 22:29Speaker 6: all the controversy and ask the controversial questions.
- 22:32Speaker 5: If that's who you are, that's fine.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I get it.
- 22:36Speaker 5: But I'll answer that. We played one game. One game.
- 22:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Did you play football?
- 22:44Speaker 2: No.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Okay. Well, they give you 12 games. And at the
- 22:47Speaker 5: end of the year, you count them up.
- 22:50Speaker 1: All right?
- 22:50Speaker 6: And, you know, that's when those type of questions are
- 22:55Speaker 6: fair to me. You know, not after one game. Two,
- 23:00Speaker 6: maybe the best team in the country. Maybe the best
- 23:03Speaker 6: team in the country.
- 23:04Speaker 1: All right?
- 23:07Speaker 5: Other people have good teams and coaches and things like that, too.
- 23:10Speaker 5: So I give them credit. We got 11 more games
- 23:13Speaker 5: to go battle. And we'll count them up. then you
- 23:18Speaker 5: can ask me whatever question you want.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and now, other than the, have you ever played football,
- 23:23Speaker 1: if you answer it just like that, I got no
- 23:26Speaker 1: problem with that answer at all because it is one game,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and you looked as bad as you could look on
- 23:31Speaker 1: the biggest stage, and I know it's impossible to watch
- 23:36Speaker 1: that game and think to yourself that that team could
- 23:39Speaker 1: be 11-1 or 10-2 or 9-3. stop me when you
- 23:45Speaker 1: think something 8-4 and I don't have their schedule in
- 23:48Speaker 1: front of me. I've got it.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I think 8-4 is still in play.
- 23:52Speaker 1: So 8-4 is not horrible. There's a lot of teams
- 23:54Speaker 1: that want to be 8-4, but it's not Clemson's standard anymore.
- 23:58Speaker 1: So what would be your advice to Dabo moving forward?
- 24:01Speaker 1: Because you can go out and lay an egg. I mean,
- 24:04Speaker 1: we saw the great Nick Saban in a national championship
- 24:07Speaker 1: game to Clemson and Dabo Sweeney get their break speed
- 24:10Speaker 1: off out in San Francisco. Well, you know, my problem
- 24:13Speaker 1: with this is Dabo did make it all about the
- 24:15Speaker 1: reporter asking the question.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Why not take some responsibility yourself? I mean, that was embarrassing.
- 24:21Speaker 3: That was maybe.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Was it the most embarrassing moment in Clemson football history?
- 24:26Speaker 3: I don't know their history.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I think that's a great point if you say, listen,
- 24:29Speaker 1: it's not about roster construction. It's about me as a
- 24:32Speaker 1: head coach not having my team ready to play in
- 24:34Speaker 1: that environment against a team that was a lot better
- 24:37Speaker 1: than us. Let me take the next step because here's
- 24:39Speaker 1: where Dabo can really mess this thing up, and I
- 24:41Speaker 1: hope he doesn't do this, is they play Georgia Southern
- 24:44Speaker 1: Saturday night. I'm going to just guess offhand two things.
- 24:47Speaker 1: If I could have drawn an eagle, I thought about
- 24:49Speaker 1: putting that on there. Oh, my gosh. How big is
- 24:50Speaker 1: that point spread? 20-something, I think. 23-and-a-half, 28-and-a-half. No, if
- 24:54Speaker 1: he loses that one. Well, I was talking about it
- 24:56Speaker 1: seemed like it was going to be pretty inside the number. Well,
- 24:58Speaker 1: here's two things that could happen in that game. Number one,
- 25:01Speaker 1: it is not going to stun me if that is
- 25:03Speaker 1: one of the smaller crowds in the Dabo era. I mean,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you just got a lot of frustrated fans, and it's
- 25:10Speaker 1: a 7.30 local time kick there, 6.30 central, 7.30 eastern.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Does he run down the hill?
- 25:16Speaker 1: There's nobody in the way. At this point, you have to, right?
- 25:18Speaker 1: You've got to keep doing that. If you walk down
- 25:20Speaker 1: the hills, you're saying, hey, it's a different vibe. No, no, no.
- 25:23Speaker 1: He's got to do everything. He's got to touch the rock.
- 25:25Speaker 1: He's got to throw his hands up. He's got to
- 25:26Speaker 1: run down the hill.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I think this is the year he trips.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Some would say that happened at Baton Rouge. But you're
- 25:33Speaker 1: probably going to have a smaller-than-normal crowd, and that's going
- 25:36Speaker 1: to become a story. And Chappell may ask him about
- 25:38Speaker 1: it in the postgame, like, Coach, there were a lot
- 25:40Speaker 1: of empty seats here. And here's the other thing that
- 25:42Speaker 1: could happen in this game. If they continue to struggle
- 25:43Speaker 1: on offense, you could get the Boo Birds out. Yeah.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I mean, I heard it all week. I heard Auburn
- 25:48Speaker 1: fans booing. I mean, Alex Gullish is coaching his first game. Yeah,
- 25:52Speaker 1: against Baylor. Against Baylor. And Auburn fans are already booing,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know, a decision Alex Gullish made. Fans will turn
- 25:58Speaker 1: on you in a hurry. I heard boos in Bryant-Denny
- 26:00Speaker 1: Stadium back in the day. I'm sure there were boos
- 26:01Speaker 1: in Bryant-Denny Stadium. I mean, you could get some boos
- 26:04Speaker 1: in this game. And Chappell, you know, the gotcha guy,
- 26:07Speaker 1: is probably going to ask about that. And if Dabo
- 26:10Speaker 1: gets baited into now it's me versus the fans, Lance–
- 26:13Speaker 1: That's where this thing could start to turn ugly.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Based on what Dabo has accomplished at Clemson, he should
- 26:18Speaker 3: never be fired. But he does himself no favors.
- 26:22Speaker 1: You're right.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Like if he owned a lot of this and didn't
- 26:24Speaker 3: have some of these hillbilly remarks and responses, I think
- 26:28Speaker 3: the fans would be a little more sympathetic to Dabo.
- 26:31Speaker 3: I don't think he should be fired, but this act
- 26:33Speaker 3: is going to get really, really old. You know, back
- 26:35Speaker 3: to what Clemson was.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Brown's right, though. You can't get into– you've got to
- 26:39Speaker 1: keep it about the football team. You can't get into–
- 26:43Speaker 1: uh listen you i mean you you answered if they
- 26:45Speaker 1: started clemson was booing some fans are booing tonight demo
- 26:48Speaker 1: well you know they pay their ticket they have a right.
- 26:50Speaker 3: To do that he's not going to do that you
- 26:51Speaker 3: know what he's going to do he's going to be
- 26:52Speaker 3: like well do they remember the days before i was.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Here that's where it's going to get ugly they weren't
- 26:57Speaker 1: booing us in 2018 and what i.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Would say in that response is well i understand that
- 27:01Speaker 3: but tommy bowden like if we really look at his resume,
- 27:06Speaker 3: it's kind of what you're doing right now. Like it
- 27:08Speaker 3: wasn't good, but that's where you are right now.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And see one of Nick Saban's genius and I'm connecting
- 27:14Speaker 1: the dots here. One of Nick Saban's genius was when
- 27:15Speaker 1: he wanted a message out, he did it through his
- 27:17Speaker 1: press conferences with the media and he would blow up
- 27:20Speaker 1: on the media because what Nick Saban knew is most
- 27:22Speaker 1: of the fans don't like the media either. So if
- 27:23Speaker 1: I blow up on those guys, most of the fans like, yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 1: they had it coming.
- 27:26Speaker 3: And he could intimidate the media too.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. And Nick Saban knew that. And he
- 27:30Speaker 1: knew this is a perfect, and it's going to get
- 27:31Speaker 1: on TV. Because, I mean, you sportscaster guys, and you're right, Dunaway,
- 27:36Speaker 1: good TV was Nick Saban blowing up the media, right?
- 27:38Speaker 1: You used it every last time. You had to. You
- 27:40Speaker 1: used it every last time. And when Scott and Forrester
- 27:43Speaker 1: were at 33-40, Rada and Spiegel, they used it every
- 27:46Speaker 1: single time. Oftentimes, they'd take it away from me and
- 27:48Speaker 1: put it in the first block. Yeah, so it was
- 27:50Speaker 1: good TV. Leave the newscast. And Nick Saban knew it,
- 27:52Speaker 1: and he knew he could blow up on the media
- 27:54Speaker 1: because most of the fans don't like the media. The
- 27:55Speaker 1: people that cover it, they think they're too negative or whatever. So, Lance,
- 27:58Speaker 1: as long as he's blowing up on Chappell, There's probably
- 28:01Speaker 1: a lot of Clemson fans that don't like Chappell. They
- 28:02Speaker 1: think he's too negative. He's anti-Clemson. They don't like Chappell
- 28:05Speaker 1: when they're winning. I know. Right now, Chappell's right. My
- 28:09Speaker 1: point is, you can blow up in the media all
- 28:11Speaker 1: you want, and that's kind of what he did there.
- 28:12Speaker 1: It's a bad look, but it's not going to alienate
- 28:14Speaker 1: the fans. You alienate the fans when you blow up
- 28:15Speaker 1: on the fans.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Now, when we look at the schedule, if we went
- 28:19Speaker 3: right now, they would be favored in... 10 of their
- 28:23Speaker 3: last 11 games.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Only Miami?
- 28:26Speaker 3: Only Miami, they would be underdogs. Now, by the time
- 28:28Speaker 3: you get to at Cal, that game could be around
- 28:30Speaker 3: a pick. By the time you get to Virginia Tech,
- 28:33Speaker 3: at Florida State, at Duke and South Carolina, those games
- 28:36Speaker 3: could maybe flip a little bit. But right now on paper,
- 28:39Speaker 3: they would be favored in every one of these games
- 28:41Speaker 3: outside of October 3rd when they're hosting No. 7 Miami.
- 28:44Speaker 3: So if I'm a Clemson fan... We end up going 10-2.
- 28:48Speaker 3: We beat a bunch of shitty teams. I know. It's
- 28:51Speaker 3: better than the alternative, losing more games.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You're right, but I think you're going to get a
- 28:54Speaker 1: victory lap like Chapel. We're 10-2. How do you feel
- 28:57Speaker 1: about that roster now? I think if I'm a Clemson fan,
- 28:59Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, it was a roster that was good
- 29:00Speaker 1: enough to beat North Carolina.
- 29:01Speaker 3: I wish Chapel, and I'm not saying he wanted to
- 29:04Speaker 3: be confrontational.
- 29:06Speaker 1: He's the gotcha guy.
- 29:07Speaker 3: He's the gotcha guy, but if he really had his...
- 29:10Speaker 3: holster prepared, he would be like, well, Dabo, you should
- 29:13Speaker 3: go 11-1. Look at the rest of this schedule. Have
- 29:15Speaker 3: you seen your schedule? You're going to be favoring all
- 29:17Speaker 3: these games. Like, how would you not go 11-1? This
- 29:20Speaker 3: is the easiest ACC schedule in the history of ACC
- 29:24Speaker 3: football on paper.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Now, there are some people who are starting to say,
- 29:27Speaker 1: you know, it's gotten stale there and Dabo should, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: he'll never be fired, shouldn't be fired. He should start
- 29:34Speaker 1: thinking about walking away. Yeah. It's got to be a
- 29:37Speaker 1: negotiated look, But he's 56 years old. I mean, some
- 29:42Speaker 1: people would love to retire at 56. Some people wouldn't
- 29:45Speaker 1: love it. They love what they do. would you start
- 29:48Speaker 1: considering it? I would, yeah. If you were Dabo. I would.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Yeah, because he's going to really damage his legacy, and
- 29:53Speaker 3: especially if it starts taking turns like this.
- 29:55Speaker 1: But it doesn't seem either, Lance, like he enjoys it
- 29:57Speaker 1: as much as he used to. No, I agree. I mean,
- 30:00Speaker 1: he hates just judging his words and what he said.
- 30:04Speaker 1: He hates the way college football is right now.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I mean, that's– I mean, two weeks ago we had
- 30:09Speaker 3: a soundbite, and he was talking about, yeah, this is–
- 30:12Speaker 3: I think it was about the professional players.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It was. They were completely lost.
- 30:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Yeah i mean everything about college football outside of the competition.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I think dabble probably still loves to go build a
- 30:24Speaker 1: game plan and go coach on a saturday night in
- 30:26Speaker 1: baton rouge or you know memorial stadium in clemson i
- 30:29Speaker 1: think he loves that part but i think he probably
- 30:30Speaker 1: hates the rest of it and you do more of
- 30:32Speaker 1: the rest of it than you do the coaching.
- 30:33Speaker 3: And i'll tell you what makes it you know money
- 30:35Speaker 3: can't buy you happiness and all that but it gives
- 30:37Speaker 3: you a lot of security and so this guy could
- 30:39Speaker 3: shut it down and you know his kids and grandkids
- 30:42Speaker 3: are taken care of if he really wants to coach
- 30:44Speaker 3: football i know this sounds hollow but Our buddy Brock
- 30:46Speaker 3: Huard's doing it right now. He can go coach on
- 30:48Speaker 3: Friday nights.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He can.
- 30:49Speaker 3: He's got a ton of money.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Because you always say, like, so-and-so looks like a spender. Actually,
- 30:54Speaker 1: Dabo doesn't. I bet you Dabo's saved up. I bet
- 30:56Speaker 1: you he's got a ton of money. Now, his wife
- 30:58Speaker 1: could be a spender. I've heard he's got a really,
- 31:00Speaker 1: really nice house. He does. He does.
- 31:02Speaker 3: He's earned it.
- 31:03Speaker 1: He's earned it. Absolutely.
- 31:04Speaker 3: I would.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I mean... There'd be people who'd want to hire Dabo Sweeney. Who?
- 31:10Speaker 1: Give me an example. Because I've heard that before. I've
- 31:13Speaker 1: heard like, oh, this doesn't have to be his last time.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Tell me about XXXY and I'll give you an XXXY school.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you give us one and I'm going to shoot
- 31:21Speaker 3: it down.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Okay, okay. Jim's going to be XX, Lance will be XY.
- 31:27Speaker 1: XXXY is the T that started a movement. Jennifer Saye.
- 31:31Speaker 1: She was a former national champion gymnast, a former Levi's
- 31:35Speaker 1: brand president, and she walked away from a corporate job
- 31:38Speaker 1: rather than say something she did not believe in, and
- 31:40Speaker 1: she started XXXY Athletics instead. The mission, in their words,
- 31:45Speaker 1: empower female athletes to take a stand for fair competition. Well,
- 31:50Speaker 1: they call it the tee that launched a movement. And
- 31:52Speaker 1: it's real athletic apparel I'm talking about here, not just
- 31:54Speaker 1: a slogan on a shirt. It's performance tops, tanks, sports bras, leggings, shorts,
- 31:58Speaker 1: training sets, men's and women's clothing. They've got hoodies, they've
- 32:02Speaker 1: got hats, they've got graphic tees, they've got all that.
- 32:04Speaker 1: at XXXY. You can see more by going to XXXYathletics.com.
- 32:10Speaker 1: That is XX-XYathletics.com. New customers get 20% off your first
- 32:16Speaker 1: order when you sign up and free shipping with anything
- 32:19Speaker 1: over $ 100. Warned by athletes who've actually put something on
- 32:22Speaker 1: the line. It is XXXYathletics.com. Okay, I'll give you one
- 32:26Speaker 1: right off the bat. Okay. North Carolina.
- 32:29Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 32:30Speaker 3: You think Carolina wants to go from Belichick.
- 32:33Speaker 1: To a dead— A two-time national championship winning— A.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Six-time Super Bowl champion.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. He's out of his league.
- 32:41Speaker 3: He's out of his league. Obviously, his time has passed him.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Dabo's time has passed that. He's the worst job he
- 32:47Speaker 3: could possibly take. Here's why I'm with Lance. Oh, my God,
- 32:50Speaker 3: they would die.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Here's why I'm with Lance, because I think if Belichick
- 32:54Speaker 1: doesn't work, The reaction is going to be, we hired
- 32:57Speaker 1: the NFL coach past his prime. Why are we hiring
- 33:00Speaker 1: the college coach past his prime? I'm not saying Dabble
- 33:02Speaker 1: would have to go in. He'd have to change his
- 33:04Speaker 1: attitude about the NIL and all that, which you can
- 33:07Speaker 1: do at your next stop. Because you did Nick Clemson,
- 33:10Speaker 1: and now you take this year off, and then you
- 33:12Speaker 1: get back in it. And then you're like, hey, I've
- 33:15Speaker 1: come back in with... with these new– believe me, this
- 33:19Speaker 1: is the world. NIL, I'm not– that was the old world.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I'm not in that old world.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And I would also ask the question, like, who are
- 33:24Speaker 3: you going to hire as your coordinators? Are you going
- 33:26Speaker 3: to be lazy about this again?
- 33:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 1: You can't go to Ed Morris. Arkansas. I mean– and
- 33:33Speaker 1: I know you– I don't know. I mean– Yeah, you
- 33:35Speaker 1: can't shoot that one down, though. Well, I mean, they've become–
- 33:38Speaker 1: Gus Malzahn yesterday in Little Rock, the Little Rock Touchdown Club, quote,
- 33:42Speaker 1: If Indiana can win a national championship, Arkansas can win one. Boy,
- 33:46Speaker 1: I bet Ryan Silverfield would love that. Did he really
- 33:48Speaker 1: say that? No, 100%.
- 33:49Speaker 4: 100%.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And it's true. I mean, Arkansas can tap in. If
- 33:54Speaker 1: they will ever do it, they can tap into as
- 33:56Speaker 1: much or more money than just about anybody.
- 33:58Speaker 3: I don't want to say I wouldn't take all coaches
- 34:01Speaker 3: in front of Dabo, but like which fan base right
- 34:03Speaker 3: now really would switch their coach for Dabo in the SEC?
- 34:07Speaker 1: Well, Arkansas. I think Arkansas might right now just because
- 34:10Speaker 1: Silverfield's an unknown.
- 34:11Speaker 3: So that's why I'm not necessarily debating that. I don't
- 34:14Speaker 3: think there is a South Carolina might.
- 34:18Speaker 1: The rivalry portion is you're probably walking across the streets
- 34:21Speaker 1: pretty hard. That's it.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I don't think there is another school in the SEC
- 34:25Speaker 3: that would switch their coach. I really don't. And I'm
- 34:28Speaker 3: not saying that that's the right decision. It's just the reality.
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's going better for Levy right now. If it starts
- 34:34Speaker 1: to turn for Levy, they might.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but if you right now are a Mississippi State fan,
- 34:38Speaker 3: who would you rather have?
- 34:38Speaker 1: I would keep Levy right now because I'm seeing progress.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Me too. I think this is a big Saturday for
- 34:44Speaker 1: him coming up.
- 34:44Speaker 5: I do.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And the last one, and these are three I just
- 34:46Speaker 1: threw down. I think all three of these are good.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I think you guys are wrong about North Carolina, but
- 34:50Speaker 1: I understand what you're saying. The other one is Florida State.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Dabo's a good recruiter, man. He's got to do different
- 34:59Speaker 1: in the portal.
- 34:59Speaker 3: I think Jimbo Fisher is a better coach than Dabo.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Maybe the X's and O's.
- 35:03Speaker 1: You had a choice. Jimbo... Brian Kelly, Dabo Sweeney. At
- 35:08Speaker 1: their current ages, Dabo's 56.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Brian Kelly, 1,000%.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Brian Kelly's 103 years old. And he just had the
- 35:16Speaker 1: LSU job.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Yeah, but Brian Kelly, I don't know what went wrong
- 35:19Speaker 3: at LSU. And when you look back, this is going
- 35:21Speaker 3: to be kind of a Dan Mullin Florida. Probably won't
- 35:24Speaker 3: because it looks like Lane Kiffin might have a lot
- 35:26Speaker 3: more success. But it's not like Brian Kelly was doing
- 35:29Speaker 3: a bad job. He just wasn't getting to where they
- 35:32Speaker 3: wanted to get to. With all that said, I think
- 35:34Speaker 3: Brian Kelly's a hell of a coach. 64 will be
- 35:37Speaker 3: 65 in October. He is a guy that will— I had
- 35:39Speaker 3: him at, what, 75 last week?
- 35:41Speaker 1: Yes.
- 35:42Speaker 3: But he is a guy that does buy in to
- 35:44Speaker 3: at least where we are in the NIL. Now, I
- 35:46Speaker 3: did hear Brian Kelly with our buddy Dusty and now
- 35:49Speaker 3: Roy Philpott on SiriusXM.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Is it Danny? It's Danny, not Dusty. Oh, yeah, Danny
- 35:55Speaker 1: and Roy. Dusty's in the middle of the day. Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: Danny and Roy. So they've changed the name to it.
- 36:00Speaker 1: It's not Danny and Roy. It's the early Reed.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Do you know what this reminds me of, though, real
- 36:05Speaker 3: quick before you get to your point? It reminds me
- 36:07Speaker 3: of when Phil Former finally got fired from Tennessee. And
- 36:09Speaker 3: nobody touched him again because they were like, this has
- 36:12Speaker 3: become so stuck.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Well, I think with Phil Former, the— People just thought
- 36:16Speaker 1: right place, right time. He's a guy that coached at Tennessee.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Tennessee loved him. He played at Tennessee. He worked at Tennessee.
- 36:21Speaker 1: It wouldn't work anywhere else. Yeah. Kind of the way
- 36:24Speaker 1: I used to feel about Mike Gundy, who, by the way,
- 36:26Speaker 1: is still unemployed. That's right. You know. Brian Kelly on
- 36:30Speaker 1: what went wrong at LSU. And I didn't disagree with
- 36:35Speaker 1: anything he said. He was like, we came in, and
- 36:40Speaker 1: when I got there, they were preparing for a bowl
- 36:42Speaker 1: game with 38 scholarship players.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 36:45Speaker 1: So I had to instantly recruit a big class of
- 36:48Speaker 1: a bunch of freshmen, and we hit the portal and
- 36:51Speaker 1: we brought in Jaden Daniels. We had Jaden Daniels two years,
- 36:54Speaker 1: and I had to play a lot of freshmen. And
- 36:56Speaker 1: he goes, the problem was then NIL in the portal hit.
- 37:00Speaker 1: So you always, and he talked about in his meeting room, seniors, juniors, sophomore,
- 37:05Speaker 1: freshmen is how they sit in the meeting rooms. He goes,
- 37:08Speaker 1: you expect in college coaching to lose your front two rows.
- 37:13Speaker 1: like juniors and seniors, they're graduating or they're going off
- 37:16Speaker 1: to the NFL. He goes, but nowadays you're also losing
- 37:20Speaker 1: your back rows too, your sophomore and your freshman. So
- 37:23Speaker 1: we had all these freshmen come in. Well, now they're
- 37:25Speaker 1: able to leave, and I'm having to bring in portals,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and really we needed, after our initial fixing the program,
- 37:33Speaker 1: we needed a little bit more time. And he goes,
- 37:35Speaker 1: it's a big boy world. They decided they didn't want
- 37:37Speaker 1: to give me more time. to keep building the roster,
- 37:41Speaker 1: they bring in Lane Kiffin. And it's absolutely true that,
- 37:45Speaker 1: you know, he came in, had to do a quick
- 37:47Speaker 1: fix because they had 38 scholarship players. Yeah, I mean,
- 37:50Speaker 1: I would imagine that. And they won some games early on.
- 37:53Speaker 1: First year they went to the SEC championship game. That's right.
- 37:56Speaker 1: So looking back at Brian Kelly, he didn't do a
- 37:58Speaker 1: horrible job. No, I mean, Lance is right, I think.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Lance has always been a big fan of Brian Kelly.
- 38:03Speaker 1: He probably thinks more of him than you and I do.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But even you and I would say he didn't do
- 38:08Speaker 1: a fireable job at LSU. That was a weird firing. Now,
- 38:10Speaker 1: it looks like LSU has come out on the other side,
- 38:13Speaker 1: you know, like Andy Dufresne, clean as a whistle.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Just to let you know, the record's 10-4, 10-3, 9-4.
- 38:18Speaker 3: It's hard to believe that got fired. And then they
- 38:21Speaker 3: fired him at 5-3.
- 38:23Speaker 1: You produced a Heisman Trophy winner. And you played for
- 38:26Speaker 1: an SEC championship.
- 38:27Speaker 3: That's right. It was 19-10 in the SEC and 34-14 overall.
- 38:31Speaker 1: At 29 games, I think LSU coach should be a
- 38:33Speaker 1: little better than 19-10. No, I agree.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I mean, I would give this a C +.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:38Speaker 1: But to your point, I mean, if Kay Adams said
- 38:40Speaker 1: that she would come and work right here on Sporting
- 38:42Speaker 1: State and take my chair, y'all would say, great run, Jim. Goodbye.
- 38:46Speaker 3: I mean, she does seem to have kind of a
- 38:48Speaker 3: social media following. Say hey. She's huge.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Say hey.
- 38:52Speaker 3: And you're all about the 19th Amendment. You'd love for
- 38:54Speaker 3: a female to be in your chair. That's right.
- 38:55Speaker 1: That's right. As a moderate, I'd love to see somebody
- 38:58Speaker 1: get an opportunity in my chair. When we come back,
- 39:01Speaker 1: some of the games on the field. NFL starts tonight.
- 39:04Speaker 1: We'll talk a little NFL football when we come back.
- 39:06Speaker 1: This is the next round presented by Hard Rock Bets
- 39:09Speaker 1: right here on Sporting State. A little NFL here before
- 39:12Speaker 1: we get to Chip Brown coming up to start our
- 39:16Speaker 1: two here on the next round presented by Hard Rock
- 39:18Speaker 1: Bets and Sport and State. We're about to talk about
- 39:21Speaker 1: the NFL survivor pool and some bold prediction in tonight's game.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Before we do that, Brownie, tell us about Perfect Ten, Mike.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Mortgage.
- 39:30Speaker 1: It's right there in the name, a more perfect mortgage

- 39:49Speaker 1: a banker who talks down to you. When you check
- 39:52Speaker 1: your options, it doesn't ding your credit score. You find
- 39:54Speaker 1: out where you actually stand before you commit to anything.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Are you buying new construction? You can ask about the
- 39:59Speaker 1: builder program. Builder funded rate buy downs that can get

- 40:43Speaker 1: not a promise to make alone. Perfect 10 Mortgage, in
- 40:46Speaker 1: pursuit of a more perfect mortgage. Let me say hello
- 40:49Speaker 1: to the guys in the back row. Scott Forrester, Brooks
- 40:51Speaker 1: Carter back there, our Director of Defense and our Secretary
- 40:56Speaker 1: of Social Media. We're going to do a survivor pool. Everybody,
- 41:00Speaker 1: a survivor pool is where you pick one team in
- 41:03Speaker 1: week one to win. And if you get it right,
- 41:06Speaker 1: you go to week two and you can't pick that
- 41:07Speaker 1: team again. You can actually do this with our friends
- 41:12Speaker 1: at Hard Rock Bets. If you're in the state of Florida,
- 41:14Speaker 1: they have a survivor pool. So all you have to
- 41:16Speaker 1: do is go to Hard Rock Bets, download the app,
- 41:19Speaker 1: use Clay Travis there. You see it on your screen there.
- 41:22Speaker 1: And they've got that starting today. And the prize at
- 41:27Speaker 1: the end, all the survivors at the end will share
- 41:30Speaker 1: $ 2 million. So go check it out, hardrock.bet backslash clay.
- 41:34Speaker 1: So I'll start on the back row. Guys, the week
- 41:37Speaker 1: one NFL schedule, you just pick a winner. No point
- 41:41Speaker 1: spread or anything. Just stay alive. You survive, Forrester. Survivor pool.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Pick me a winner.
- 41:46Speaker 7: All right. I am very tempted to pick against my
- 41:50Speaker 7: own team because I just think they're going to suck
- 41:53Speaker 7: and they're opening with the Steelers.
- 41:55Speaker 1: But the Steelers also suck, so it's a lot of
- 41:58Speaker 1: suck in that game.
- 41:59Speaker 3: That would be a ballsy play right there.
- 42:02Speaker 7: That's the only reason I didn't. So I'm going to
- 42:04Speaker 7: pick against my least favorite team. The Saints are going
- 42:08Speaker 7: to get their ass kicked by Detroit.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Okay. Forrester there.
- 42:13Speaker 3: That's a big number, too.
- 42:15Speaker 1: On Detroit.
- 42:15Speaker 3: A huge expectation for the Lions this year.
- 42:17Speaker 1: We can have duplication, but Brooks, give me your survivor
- 42:21Speaker 1: pick at Hard Rock Bets. I'm going to go with
- 42:26Speaker 1: the Jaguars against the Browns.
- 42:28Speaker 4: I don't like anything about the Browns quarterback situation. They
- 42:31Speaker 4: have no faith in either Deshaun Watson or Shadur Sanders.
- 42:35Speaker 4: And Jags coming off a big year last year. I
- 42:38Speaker 4: think they're going to get Travis Hunter more involved with
- 42:40Speaker 4: the offense. And I like the Jags massively in this game.
- 42:44Speaker 4: And it's a pretty big number as well.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Is Tyler making a pick? Tyler usually doesn't make these.
- 42:50Speaker 1: You want to pick? Survivor pool, man. Survivor pool.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Sure.
- 42:54Speaker 1: What am I doing? Okay. Brownie, you're next. We can
- 42:58Speaker 1: circle back to Tyler. Just go look at the NFL
- 43:00Speaker 1: schedule and pick a team you think is.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Going to win.
- 43:02Speaker 1: All they've got to do is win. And you can
- 43:04Speaker 1: only pick them, you know. Just this week. You can't
- 43:06Speaker 1: pick them the rest of the season. I am going
- 43:08Speaker 1: to go with the other L.A.
- 43:09Speaker 5: Team.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Chargers and that's supposed to be a lightning bolt at
- 43:12Speaker 1: the bottom and it didn't really turn out good.
- 43:14Speaker 3: It's like a bat well they're playing the cardinals along
- 43:17Speaker 3: with your dolphins the lowest win total in football.
- 43:19Speaker 1: At four and a half you're gonna you're gonna survive
- 43:21Speaker 1: in these things by going against miami and arizona as
- 43:24Speaker 1: much as possible and cleveland and cleveland which is what
- 43:27Speaker 1: the jaguar it's a scary pick for you you know
- 43:30Speaker 1: here's the thing about is that a scary pick here's
- 43:32Speaker 1: the thing about the jags is i actually thought about
- 43:34Speaker 1: the jaguars because how often are you going to be
- 43:36Speaker 1: able to pick them That's.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Exactly what I thought, too. You can fade against the
- 43:40Speaker 3: Browns every week. You just can't pick the same team
- 43:44Speaker 3: to survive.
- 43:44Speaker 1: So that might have been the only time you got
- 43:46Speaker 1: to pick the Jags all year.
- 43:47Speaker 3: And that's one of the reasons. I don't think it
- 43:49Speaker 3: would be the only time you get to pick the Jags,
- 43:51Speaker 3: but I am going with Jacksonville. They're an 8.5-point favorite.
- 43:54Speaker 3: You look at the way they played after they got
- 43:56Speaker 3: home from London when they got dismantled by the Rams.
- 43:59Speaker 3: They win eight consecutive games going into the postseason. They
- 44:02Speaker 3: run into Buffalo. They lose that game. But Liam Cohen,
- 44:05Speaker 3: I'm not a big fan, but the fact that he
- 44:07Speaker 3: came from the Sean McVay coaching tree, the guy knows offense,
- 44:11Speaker 3: and whatever is really working between him and Trevor Lawrence.
- 44:14Speaker 3: So I think that continues. I think Cleveland is going
- 44:16Speaker 3: to be a mess offensively, and I do like Jacksonville here,
- 44:20Speaker 3: probably even minus the 8.5, but definitely to win this game.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Listen, I've tried to play– The way you guys are
- 44:27Speaker 1: trying to attack it to take the obvious early on.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Just go obvious, obvious. I've tried that, and I end
- 44:33Speaker 1: up losing week one because inevitably it'll be a big
- 44:36Speaker 1: thing on the NFL network on Monday or Tuesday. It'll
- 44:40Speaker 1: be like, oh, man, all the survivor pools got wiped out.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Come on, Dunaway, overthink this.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Give us a dog. Give us a dog to win out.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Let's play another dog. It's the Bengals. I'm taking the Bengals.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I've said it since we started reading hard rock bets.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Bengals and Tampa Bay. Cincinnati is a Super Bowl contender,
- 44:55Speaker 1: healthy week one. You don't know who you got the.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Rest of the day.
- 44:59Speaker 1: You know who over the last five years has been
- 45:01Speaker 1: one of the worst teams in September's been Cincinnati. Just
- 45:04Speaker 1: the opposite. I know. Bengals. Give me the Bengals. All right.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Bengals are my play. I'm going to be taking the
- 45:12Speaker 1: Eagles to beat the Commanders this week. Okay. That's another
- 45:15Speaker 1: pretty good one. That's an aggressive pick. Five and a half.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Five and a half at home.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 1: So that's Tyler there. So those are our picks. You
- 45:21Speaker 1: can do that. at hard rock bets give me bold
- 45:24Speaker 1: predictions thank you for the guys behind the glass back
- 45:26Speaker 1: back in here uh sport and state's got a big
- 45:29Speaker 1: story coming out on the website there and we were
- 45:32Speaker 1: asked to contribute to that um and then we were
- 45:35Speaker 1: asked for some a bold prediction yeah i don't know
- 45:37Speaker 1: how bold this one is you guys saw mine because
- 45:40Speaker 1: it was in a group text of brooks so i
- 45:41Speaker 1: don't know how bold this is but i haven't read
- 45:44Speaker 1: either one of yours you have not my bold prediction
- 45:46Speaker 1: that will be in this article where we pick the MVP,
- 45:48Speaker 1: we also pick our Super Bowl. My bold prediction is
- 45:51Speaker 1: that the Miami Dolphins will not have the worst record
- 45:53Speaker 1: in the NFL. And I know you're like, well, Arizona
- 45:56Speaker 1: and Miami, and I get it. And here's my thinking
- 45:58Speaker 1: behind that. Would it benefit Miami to have the number
- 46:01Speaker 1: one overall pick? Yes. Then they won't do it. Because
- 46:04Speaker 1: y'all were trending that way. I mean, that's the way
- 46:09Speaker 1: it works for some of these organizations. Y'all were actually
- 46:12Speaker 1: tanking for 2-0 one year, and then the old boy
- 46:14Speaker 1: won a couple of games at the end of the year.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Brian Flores was so good, they ended up having to
- 46:19Speaker 1: trade around a pick to, uh, um, I will say
- 46:22Speaker 1: Miami is going to be a bad football team this year,
- 46:24Speaker 1: but I don't think they will end up with the worst,
- 46:26Speaker 1: worst record in the NFL. I think that'll be Arizona.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Don't know if that's a bold prediction. But my thought
- 46:30Speaker 1: process there is that it's fairly bold. We'll talk about
- 46:33Speaker 1: the actual game tonight in a second. But give me
- 46:35Speaker 1: give me your bold prediction. You told to find folks
- 46:37Speaker 1: at sport.
- 46:37Speaker 3: Kevin O'Connell's magic on quarterbacks continues from Kirk Cousins to
- 46:42Speaker 3: Sam Darnold to now Kyler Murray. He is going to
- 46:45Speaker 3: play like a former number one overall pick in this offense.
- 46:48Speaker 3: It's amazing. Justin Jefferson dropped off everybody's boards as a
- 46:51Speaker 3: fantasy pickup. because people just equate bad quarterback play with
- 46:56Speaker 3: Kyler Murray. I think this is going to be a
- 46:57Speaker 3: reemergence for Kyler Murray. I think he plays really, really well,
- 47:01Speaker 3: and I think he's your comeback player of the year.
- 47:03Speaker 1: You guys saw my bold prediction. The AFC Championship game teams, Broncos,
- 47:09Speaker 1: Patriots last year, both of them missed the playoffs. I
- 47:12Speaker 1: did see that. For whatever reason, I could see it
- 47:17Speaker 1: more with the Broncos than the Patriots. I don't know
- 47:19Speaker 1: about you, Lance. Like, if you had to If you
- 47:21Speaker 1: had to pick one of those missing it, would you
- 47:23Speaker 1: pick the Broncos or the Patriots? Well, with the Broncos.
- 47:26Speaker 3: I mean, the Broncos difficult division. The Patriots had the
- 47:32Speaker 3: Bills and that's it.
- 47:33Speaker 1: The Patriots get to play the Jets and the Dolphins
- 47:35Speaker 1: four times.
- 47:35Speaker 3: But the Patriots schedule last year was an absolute joke.
- 47:38Speaker 3: I think I would take the Broncos to end up
- 47:41Speaker 3: like nine and eight or ten and seven. I still
- 47:43Speaker 3: don't trust Bo Nix as a quarterback that's going to
- 47:45Speaker 3: be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And I don't trust Drake May. And then with everything
- 47:51Speaker 1: that's going on with Vrabels and the offseason and that
- 47:53Speaker 1: organization coming off a magical year. Because we talk about
- 47:57Speaker 1: this all the time. The turnover, the churning you get
- 48:01Speaker 1: of the NFL playoff teams is amazing. And I've got,
- 48:07Speaker 1: we'll do our playoff picks tomorrow, but 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I've got seven playoff teams from last year that will
- 48:14Speaker 1: not be back there this year. That would have probably been.
- 48:16Speaker 3: That's on average.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's on average. That probably should have been my
- 48:19Speaker 1: bowl pick. So give me the seven you think will
- 48:23Speaker 1: not be back. Denver, New England. Okay. That was your
- 48:27Speaker 1: AFC championship game, so that is bold. Week one loser,
- 48:31Speaker 1: New England tonight. Okay. Week one loser, San Francisco tomorrow night.
- 48:36Speaker 1: You don't think the 49ers make the playoffs? Go to
- 48:38Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 48:38Speaker 3: That would be shocking.
- 48:39Speaker 1: The injuries finally catch up. Okay. There's a power plant
- 48:42Speaker 1: right next. Green Bay. I don't think they go back.
- 48:44Speaker 1: You know, I could actually see that with Green Bay.
- 48:46Speaker 3: I could see. I mean, look, somebody in that division,
- 48:48Speaker 3: there's a good chance, is not going to go to
- 48:49Speaker 3: the postseason. That division's that good. Chicago, I have them
- 48:52Speaker 3: not going back. So you've got two missing out of
- 48:54Speaker 3: that division.
- 48:54Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Jacksonville doesn't go back, and Carolina
- 48:58Speaker 1: doesn't go back. So Carolina, Jacksonville, Chicago, San Francisco, New England, Denver,
- 49:02Speaker 1: and Green Bay. I'll tell you who I have in
- 49:05Speaker 1: those places tomorrow on the show.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Are you going to leave us hanging?
- 49:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's quite the team. Tomorrow on the show.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Oh, by the way, Zach Taylor, 2-5 in openers for Cincinnati.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. He's 1-2. He's about to be 3,
- 49:17Speaker 1: according to Chip. Now, Tampa did, Baker Mayfield did work
- 49:21Speaker 1: out his contract. So he's got an extension, according to reports. Well,
- 49:25Speaker 1: he's just going to play down there forever, isn't he?
- 49:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:27Speaker 1: I think he's 104. $ 56 million.
- 49:29Speaker 3: They're going to drag his dead carcass off the field.
- 49:31Speaker 3: I thought they were going to do it last year
- 49:33Speaker 3: against the Rams.
- 49:33Speaker 1: But I always say it. You've got a top-half quarterback.
- 49:35Speaker 1: You've got to marry him. Would you say Baker Mayfield's top-half? Yes,
- 49:38Speaker 1: for sure. The way he's played now, but the concern
- 49:40Speaker 1: of why they were hesitant to give him the deal
- 49:42Speaker 1: was do you start trending down? My team is paying
- 49:45Speaker 1: Scott's quarterback a lot of money to play for the Falcons.
- 49:47Speaker 1: That's right. New England-Seattle tonight on NBC. We start the
- 49:51Speaker 1: NFL season tonight. What can we expect to see tonight?
- 49:53Speaker 3: Well, you're seeing a rematch of the 29-13 Super Bowl
- 49:57Speaker 3: 60 victory by the Seahawks. This is only the... I
- 50:00Speaker 3: thought that this happened more. Didn't you guys think that
- 50:03Speaker 3: they matched up the Super Bowl participants more?
- 50:06Speaker 1: They try to sometimes, but it's usually... They've gone rivalry game.
- 50:10Speaker 1: They've gone NFC championship game rematch. It's usually... Pretty good matchup, right,
- 50:18Speaker 1: to open up the season? Yeah. I think they've tried
- 50:20Speaker 1: to do.
- 50:20Speaker 3: The Super Bowl. So this is only the third time
- 50:23Speaker 3: since the merger in 1970. We haven't seen this matchup
- 50:26Speaker 3: since 2016. when Denver beat Carolina 21-20. Did we do
- 50:30Speaker 3: it the year before?
- 50:31Speaker 1: It seemed like we did it back-to-back years there for
- 50:33Speaker 1: a while.
- 50:33Speaker 3: The other one was in 1970 when the Vikings beat
- 50:36Speaker 3: Kansas City. So, I mean, this is only the third
- 50:38Speaker 3: time we've seen week one rematches of the Super Bowl.
- 50:42Speaker 3: You know, something to look at. Christian Gonzalez just signed
- 50:44Speaker 3: the richest cornerback deal in NFL history yesterday. Jackson Smith
- 50:48Speaker 3: and Jigba signed a massive extension a couple of months
- 50:51Speaker 3: ago with Seattle. That matchup is going to be fascinating.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel is a head coach, only two and five
- 50:57Speaker 3: in openers. It's kind of a sneaky low number. I mean,
- 51:00Speaker 3: you can't put these numbers much bigger.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Three and a half right now with that?
- 51:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Seattle three and a half, total of 44 and
- 51:05Speaker 3: a half. It should be a fun game, though. I
- 51:07Speaker 3: think it'll be better than Super Bowl 60.
- 51:09Speaker 1: More entertaining than the actual Super Bowl game because you're
- 51:11Speaker 1: not as close to the mess, probably. And A.J.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Brown making his debut. You know, this was interesting. Seattle
- 51:16Speaker 3: last year, the second most turnovers in the NFL. How
- 51:20Speaker 3: many times do you think they turned it over in
- 51:21Speaker 3: the postseason?
- 51:22Speaker 1: That would probably be zero.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Zero.
- 51:24Speaker 3: 28 turnovers last year. And then they all turned it
- 51:27Speaker 3: over one time with Sam Darnold at quarterback. And by
- 51:29Speaker 3: the way, they were also 15-5 against the number last year.
- 51:33Speaker 3: That was the best covering team in the NFL, the
- 51:34Speaker 3: Seattle Seahawks.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Their run game was so good in the postseason. and
- 51:40Speaker 1: they lose the MVP.
- 51:42Speaker 3: To Kenneth Walker. Now you bring in Jadarian Price. You
- 51:45Speaker 3: get him at the end of the first round from
- 51:47Speaker 3: Notre Dame, who complimented Jeremiah Love so well last year.
- 51:50Speaker 3: You've got Zach Charbonnet. I mean, it's going to drop
- 51:53Speaker 3: off a little bit because of the inexperience with Price
- 51:55Speaker 3: at this level, but I think by October, Price is
- 51:58Speaker 3: going to be running up and down the field.
- 52:00Speaker 1: I want to see what it looks like tonight. And
- 52:02Speaker 1: I thought Brock put us to a pretty good test
- 52:05Speaker 1: yesterday on Sam Darnold, like I don't believe he can
- 52:08Speaker 1: do it back-to-back years. I don't either. But now you
- 52:10Speaker 1: don't believe in either one of those quarterbacks in back-to-back years. Oh,
- 52:13Speaker 1: but I really don't believe in Drake May. Yeah, you're
- 52:15Speaker 1: down on Drake May. I won't give it away, but
- 52:16Speaker 1: I think Seattle gets back to the playoffs, yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Seattle's big problem with Geno Smith was
- 52:21Speaker 3: the inability to run the football. Now, Clint Kubiak, the
- 52:25Speaker 3: guy Colin plays, is now in Las Vegas, so how much–
- 52:29Speaker 3: You know, different is the play calling. Does it kind
- 52:32Speaker 3: of drop back to what you saw with Ryan Grubb
- 52:35Speaker 3: a couple of years ago? I think Seattle is going
- 52:36Speaker 3: to be fine. Now, when I say fine, are they
- 52:38Speaker 3: going to win 12 games?
- 52:39Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 52:40Speaker 3: It might be 10 or 11, but I would be really,
- 52:42Speaker 3: really surprised. Mike McDonald, where he is as a head coach,
- 52:45Speaker 3: if they were to completely drop off.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Yeah, could very easily be a good wild card team.
- 52:49Speaker 3: I'd love to see him lose tonight.
- 52:51Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to happen. LanceIsLocked.com.
- 52:54Speaker 3: I got side and total up and available for you.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Yeah, LanceIsLocked.com. You can go play that at Lance's site there,
- 52:59Speaker 1: who loves to help you out as you go to
- 53:02Speaker 1: our friends at Hard Rock Bets. All right, when we
- 53:05Speaker 1: come back, Chip Brown joins the show. We get back
- 53:07Speaker 1: to college football. Texas and Ohio State, it's the biggest
- 53:10Speaker 1: game on the planet. Should be a fun one. I'll
- 53:14Speaker 1: ask the question, who needs it more, Texas or Ohio State?
- 53:17Speaker 1: Chip Brown coming up on the other side the next round,
- 53:19Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sporting State.
