- 0:01Speaker 1: A Smiles Show, A smallsy show. This afternoon's guest Sporty Spice.
- 0:06Speaker 1: She's fresh from getting married to an Aussie. She's back
- 0:09Speaker 1: on the Voice, which continues Sundays on seven and seven plus.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 0:16Speaker 2: You're gonna have a little sing something together. Oh yeah,
- 0:18Speaker 2: it's Spice Girl.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Melanie said, Hey, what's up?
- 0:25Speaker 2: This is Melanie.
- 0:26Speaker 3: See Hi, you're listening to smilesy on't kiss?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Hello beautiful? How are you?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Hello you? I'm good.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Are you doing? I'm doing great? Wonderful to see you again,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and congratulations.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You kept that sick last time you were in this
- 0:47Speaker 1: studio with me. We talked about a lot and you
- 0:50Speaker 1: never told me you will get married.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I know.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Well, we were really trying to keep it quite quiet
- 0:57Speaker 3: until the big day, and we did really well. Actually
- 1:00Speaker 3: the pesky British press didn't get hold of it until
- 1:03Speaker 3: the day before. Oh wow, well to keep it under
- 1:06Speaker 3: wraps for so long.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I don't know how your life goes, but forgive me
- 1:10Speaker 1: with this. When you were here last I asked that
- 1:12Speaker 1: question about the reunion, and that story keeps popping up,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and my name keeps popping up in our interview all
- 1:19Speaker 1: the time. You must be so well used to it
- 1:23Speaker 1: by now, you must like have to honestly just live
- 1:27Speaker 1: your life a little bit on guard because the British
- 1:31Speaker 1: press and everyone just wants to write or write something
- 1:34Speaker 1: or say something.
- 1:36Speaker 2: They just love it. Oh, they love it.
- 1:38Speaker 3: It's been so funny actually, because obviously after the wedding
- 1:42Speaker 3: there's been quite a lot of interest and I mean
- 1:45Speaker 3: it's quite entertaining to us.
- 1:47Speaker 2: How much that is written is.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Just nonsense, yes, but you know that is the nature
- 1:53Speaker 3: of the beast. Yeah, yeah, but you know, to take
- 1:56Speaker 3: not to take anything away from the day.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I saw you on the front page of Hallow magazine
- 2:02Speaker 1: here in Australia and the photos are gorgeous. Lovely little
- 2:05Speaker 1: garden situation there too. I don't know where you got married,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but it was beautiful.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: So it's a beautiful house actually up near the Lake
- 2:13Speaker 3: District in the UK, and two of my dearest friends
- 2:17Speaker 3: owned the property and they're very kind and let me
- 2:20Speaker 3: do the celebration there.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Oh how lovely. Now, while I've got you, because we
- 2:24Speaker 1: are going to talk about the voice in a second,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but while I've got you, I'd love to create another headline.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It's true that you walk down the aisle to want
- 2:32Speaker 1: to be This is what I heard.
- 2:36Speaker 2: No, that is not true.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It was actually when to become One. To be fair,
- 2:43Speaker 1: it was when to Become One? That was the song
- 2:45Speaker 1: you walked down the aisle to.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Okay, well I didn't, but I will give you an exclusive.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I did when I was married, I walked back up
- 2:56Speaker 3: the aisle with my husband to become One, played by
- 3:00Speaker 3: beautiful string quotet.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You did not, did you really? I just that was
- 3:04Speaker 1: I was just making a joke. Oh that's so beautiful.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you know it was.
- 3:09Speaker 3: It was a little bit of fun, but it's also
- 3:11Speaker 3: obviously beautiful song. Actually, I have some friends a beautiful
- 3:16Speaker 3: string quartet that I've worked with in the past, and
- 3:18Speaker 3: they played for us on the day. So yeah, it
- 3:21Speaker 3: was really really special. But music obviously was a really
- 3:23Speaker 3: big part of the celebration, and yeah, there was there
- 3:26Speaker 3: was something for everyone.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So many of my.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Friends and family and Chris's friends and family are huge
- 3:32Speaker 3: music lovers, so we satisfied everyone.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I love that, and I also love too that the
- 3:36Speaker 1: friends and family would have loved the nod to the song,
- 3:39Speaker 1: because because you have to sort of give them. You
- 3:41Speaker 1: got to give the people what they want, even though
- 3:43Speaker 1: it's your wedding day. You got to give the people
- 3:45Speaker 1: what they want, right.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Absolutely, And when there's three Spie girls in attendance, you
- 3:49Speaker 3: know you have very.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Respectful Totally, I totally agree. What we love though, most
- 3:54Speaker 1: is that now you are forever joined to Australia, not
- 3:57Speaker 1: only through the television, but now we you're with your
- 4:00Speaker 1: beautiful husband, you are back on the voice. What are
- 4:03Speaker 1: the contestants like this year? How how is our talent pool?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Because Melanie dare I say, there was a period of
- 4:11Speaker 1: time there before you got here. I thought we could
- 4:14Speaker 1: have drained it. I actually thought, no, oh no, I
- 4:18Speaker 1: think it's closed in my.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Mind, honestly, Like because obviously last year we had such
- 4:23Speaker 3: a good season, we had incredible singers, and I was nervous.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I was like, how how can we even get close
- 4:30Speaker 3: to that? But let me tell you, I'm so excited.
- 4:35Speaker 3: You you know, you're starting to see these incredible artists
- 4:38Speaker 3: and contestants that we have, but.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You ain't seen none yet.
- 4:43Speaker 3: It's such an exciting and brilliant season.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And of course this year I'm going to win.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, No of course you are. The coaches
- 4:50Speaker 1: are always very competitive with the do you off the set,
- 4:56Speaker 1: like obviously there's the singing, and you can coach and
- 4:59Speaker 1: you and I know you would do this on the
- 5:00Speaker 1: show too, but do you ever give the contestants like
- 5:03Speaker 1: a little bit of how he is, how the fame
- 5:05Speaker 1: game works, like be careful, watch out for this, protect yourself,
- 5:09Speaker 1: protect your sort of your energy because like, hey, if
- 5:12Speaker 1: you win this, people are going to you know, want
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of you. And then and then just you know,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it can become very all encompassing for people who haven't
- 5:21Speaker 1: slowly built up the resilience to the fame.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Absolutely, I think that is like the most important part
- 5:28Speaker 3: of being a coach. You know, we we can share
- 5:31Speaker 3: our experience of being a performer, being on stage, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 3: technically about singing, but there's so much more to the show,
- 5:40Speaker 3: being in the Podcai and absolutely, you know, I want
- 5:44Speaker 3: to prepare my artists in every possible way because I think,
- 5:48Speaker 3: you know, even for we live in such a different
- 5:51Speaker 3: world now, right, so many of the great singers that
- 5:53Speaker 3: we see on the show, and I say singers artists,
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, there's everything this year, and there's such a
- 5:59Speaker 3: wide range of performers, and I you know, they already
- 6:04Speaker 3: have a profile. You know, we have social media as
- 6:06Speaker 3: people building this and it's such a boost to them.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Even people who get to the auditions, you know, even
- 6:13Speaker 3: get into the auditions is a huge achievement and that
- 6:15Speaker 3: will raise their profile. So it is it's I think
- 6:18Speaker 3: it's the responsibility of the coach to impart that knowledge
- 6:22Speaker 3: that you have of being out there. So yeah, absolutely,
- 6:26Speaker 3: we feel like quite maternal or paternal boys around our artists.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So we always want to protect them in every way
- 6:34Speaker 3: that we can.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Now that obviously you're on you're on the voice as well,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and we've touched on the on the map. Have you
- 6:39Speaker 1: fallen in love with Australia? Is there anything you love
- 6:43Speaker 1: in particular about our country now that you have been
- 6:46Speaker 1: spending so much time here?
- 6:48Speaker 2: Well? What our country?
- 6:50Speaker 3: I've I've been so lucky, right because I've toured all
- 6:52Speaker 3: over Australia. I've seen so many different parts in you know,
- 6:56Speaker 3: you guys know you are so lucky because you have
- 6:59Speaker 3: all of these beautive places, so different this coastline. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 3: even you are so big that you have like different climates.
- 7:07Speaker 3: I love Australia. I love the people, I love the food,
- 7:11Speaker 3: I love the variety. I've learned so much about Australia,
- 7:15Speaker 3: especially this season.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You know, there's so many, so many treats for the viewers.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm kind of I get goosebumps kind of thinking about
- 7:23Speaker 3: what's to come. And yeah, I feel very blessed that
- 7:27Speaker 3: I've learned so much more about your country. And now
- 7:31Speaker 3: I have a huge family that live there, and most
- 7:33Speaker 3: of my family are based in Sydney, but I love
- 7:36Speaker 3: to get far and wide and I love that.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I love that. Oh hey, so since the last time
- 7:41Speaker 1: you were here on the show, you know the band
- 7:44Speaker 1: five they have reunited, they're doing they did a tour here,
- 7:47Speaker 1: right and they came here on the show and they
- 7:49Speaker 1: told me an incredible story about Simon cow Okay. Now
- 7:54Speaker 1: I wanted to ask because I didn't know this, but
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the height of the nineties and bands being given songs,
- 8:01Speaker 1: they ended up being offered a song that was originally
- 8:06Speaker 1: or then ended up going to in sync and it
- 8:08Speaker 1: was Bye Bye Bye. Okay, Oh yeah, that could have
- 8:11Speaker 1: been a five song. And I wanted to know, in
- 8:13Speaker 1: all of your time as an artist, did you ever
- 8:16Speaker 1: write a song or get offered a song that you
- 8:19Speaker 1: turned down or gave to someone else that ended up
- 8:22Speaker 1: being a big hit for them, and it was could
- 8:24Speaker 1: have been yours.
- 8:26Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:26Speaker 3: That's actually never happened to me, I think with the
- 8:28Speaker 3: Space Girls because we wrote very specifically for ourselves. Yeah, okay,
- 8:33Speaker 3: so everything we wrote was very very spacey. And then yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 3: as a solo artist, yet I've only I have had
- 8:40Speaker 3: songs that I've gone on to other artists, not that
- 8:43Speaker 3: they've been huge hits, but no, I've never had that experience.
- 8:46Speaker 3: But I saw five at the weekend I performing Right.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And Pride, okay, and I.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Had forgotten how many bangers they've got, the brilliant So
- 8:57Speaker 3: good to see them back on stage, and I think
- 9:00Speaker 3: better than ever, better than they were like in the
- 9:02Speaker 3: nineties and nineties.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and also too, I didn't realize because I went
- 9:06Speaker 1: back into the deep catalog back in the day Top
- 9:08Speaker 1: of the Pops. What a crazy show that was. Like
- 9:11Speaker 1: all of you artists had to do like live TV
- 9:14Speaker 1: performances like every weekend, and like or then every other
- 9:18Speaker 1: weekend whenever in new song came out, you were like
- 9:20Speaker 1: boom there performing Go Go Go Wild.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Well, Top of the Pops is like, wow, it was
- 9:27Speaker 3: an institution being British growing up here. It was that
- 9:31Speaker 3: was what you like dreamed about doing. And when one
- 9:36Speaker 3: we came out, we were actually in Japan. When it
- 9:38Speaker 3: went to number one in the UK, we were in
- 9:40Speaker 3: Japan promoting for a couple of weeks. Hoey was so
- 9:42Speaker 3: frustrated because it was like it was the biggest deal
- 9:46Speaker 3: to get in the studio and perform on top of
- 9:48Speaker 3: the Pops. And I get top of the Pops, we
- 9:49Speaker 3: met Prince That's where I first met Brian Adams. And
- 9:53Speaker 3: because everybody did the show, that the show doesn't exist
- 9:57Speaker 3: anymore is so sad. But going back watching the shows
- 10:00Speaker 3: is amazing.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm speaking of Brian Adams. He will be here on
- 10:05Speaker 1: tour later this year. I mean, I'm not suggesting now
- 10:08Speaker 1: that Australia is maybe half home for you. You could
- 10:12Speaker 1: be here at the same time. We'd love to have
- 10:16Speaker 1: a little collab on stage.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Do you know what I would love nothing more?
- 10:21Speaker 3: So he's going out Natalie Bruliet, Yes, him and the
- 10:25Speaker 3: Great US. He and I think I'm actually on tour
- 10:28Speaker 3: in the US.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Okay, well we need to cancel some dates. Cancel some
- 10:32Speaker 1: dates okay, good.
- 10:33Speaker 2: To hop over. But because you know I'm back, I'm back.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I'm touring Australia in November, so yeah, I'll check Brian's
- 10:41Speaker 3: dates and see if we can at least steal one
- 10:43Speaker 3: show together.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yes, you'll be here in November playing Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane
- 10:47Speaker 1: and Sydney. Livenation dot com dot au, Melanie, lovely to see.
