- 0:00SPEAKER_03: All burgers, 10 bucks, four-ounce beef panty with uh barbecue, grilled onions, American cheese, fries on the burger, garlic aioli on a brioche bun.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: And I made the mistake of doing this podcast hungry.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: I'm sitting here, look at this.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: I got a beef stick in my pocket, and this was gonna suffice until now.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: I'm just throw it across the room.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: I can't eat that now.
- 0:24SPEAKER_03: It's burger time, baby.
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: Uh normally I get a little countdown when we come into this show, but it just went one bing.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: So here we are.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: Um, it is the PW podcast back again here, and it is uh it's an important week because uh my my kids, they start, it's birthday week.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: We're coming up, and and now everybody, it's not just about presence, it's about planning.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: And my oldest daughter is gonna be 11.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: She's like, I I would really like to take some of my friends to the beach.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, is it just this week, Drew?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Because I have three.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I've got mother-in-law, sister, and brother-in-law all within seven days of one another.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And the sister and brother-in-law live across the state, so that's a send a gift thing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: The mother-in-law is a little more demanding.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, she actually asked me to take some of my antelope out of the freezer, which that was a that was a tag that took me 30 years to get.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Um, so anybody just requesting it is kind of mind-blowing, but I went ahead and obliged.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: So making a big nice dinner.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: We're celebrating birthdays over here in Lane County, too, this week, Drew.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is how aggressive it is.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: This week that we just had my brother, his birthday, and my sister-in-law's birthday, and they're married, that those two together, back-to-back days, their birthdays, which is so strange that you would find somebody to marry who's born the day after you.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Um, so that happened.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Then yesterday we had uh a party for my twin nieces, which that's a twofer.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: And then this week I've got my oldest daughter, and then next week my middle daughter.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I think everybody procreates nine plus months back from this, and and here we are.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: So yeah, it's a lot of presence, a lot of stuff going on in how I dodge a beach trip, Marcus.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: That's what it really comes down to.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: You know, uh the twins thing makes me wonder if anybody's ever had one before midnight and one after midnight, and you can get some reprieve there and be like, no, yours is tomorrow.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: We're celebrating this one today.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: I that's probably a nightmare for parents, but that's funny, you know, and and they were premies, so maybe you could say, like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Your birthday's when you came out of the tank, not when you came out of the womb.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, they were the size of like a Twinkie at that point.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: So um, is it really a birthday?
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: I really think that they're born because they're premies, they're in a grade older than they would be.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: You know, because if if it had cooked the whole time, then they're born into the next grade.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: I never thought about that.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: He's like, it and is it that's such a good idea that not until they're street legal, not until they're out of the case and they can be taken out into the world, right?
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: It's like a a vehicle isn't done until it comes off of the assembly line.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Not when you when you put the first part of the axle together.
- 3:38unknown: Right.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: We're still building this bad boy.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Uh a steering wheel does not a car make, okay?
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: We'll put it that way.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: She wants to go to the beach.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know whatever happened, like go into a Wonderland or a Bullwinkles or or whatever, but we'll see what happens.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: The older she gets, and she, you know, when I used to have a the radio show, she would want to come on the show and do the show on her birthday.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: And since it was in August, you could do that.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: So maybe maybe we'll have to slip her in here with us, Marcus, and she can she can come do an episode of the PNW podcast.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Dude, she'll be great at it.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: She's such a talker.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: I I mean, every time I see her, it she's the first conversation I have.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: I'll catch up with you and Amy later.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it's is she's definitely a chatty one, so she'd be perfect.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you go to my um my TikTok, now I have two TikToks.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: I've got one for this show, the PNW Podcast TikTok, and then the one that's connected to my other podcast, which is also used to be my personal TikTok, has it's fit for radio.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: If you go and check that out, there's a video pinned to the top of her performing at a at a talent show at the end of fifth grade, and I put it up there, not thinking much about it.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: It is by far the highest rated video that I've ever had on TikTok.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: I think she's got 115 or 120,000 views.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Like 9,000 likes on her, and all she did was like come up and be like, hey, I'm Lizzie Tiedeman, and I'm gonna miss my school, and here's a Miley Cyrus song.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: And it had charisma, but it's like, how many videos have I made?
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: Like three 300 million and nothing.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Every day when I I pop it open, it's like you have notifications.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: So I click it and I'm like, whoa, got all these new followers.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, and likes.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: Click it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: 80% of the likes are her in the little yellow dress singing Miley.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Uh no offense, but she's got you beating the cuteness factor for sure.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, but uh hey, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, man.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: You were a performer at a young age, too, so it's gotta be fun to see as a dad.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm sure she'll take my place here at some point.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: But one thing that she is not privy to yet, but when she gets wind of this, it's gonna be an issue is my daughter Lucy loves a cheeseburger.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: And she doesn't just like a Mickey D's cheeseburger.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Like my other kids, you can get them nugs or you can get them a Mickey D's something, a little McDonald's special, and really shave the dollars and cents off it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Lucy's like, wait, why aren't you guys getting McDonald's?
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Well, we were gonna go pick up these other burgers.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: They're big, you don't want them.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: No, I want them.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: So now it's we have to get a big kid burger for Amy, me, and Lucy, and then the other ones will eat like children.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: The reason I bring that up, Marcus, is today is a magical day here in the Portland metropolitan area because it is the beginning of the Portland Mercury's Burger Week, which it doesn't sound like, oh, okay, well, it's the Mercury's thing.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: They really kind of dialed this thing in.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: There's a full-blown interactive map, which I will link up where you can go to all kinds of different restaurants in the area, not just in Portland proper, out into the suburbs, and all burgers are ten dollars.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: And in this day and age, you've been to the restaurants, like a lot of times you're at a restaurant, you're clipping 20 for a burger and fries.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Easy.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: And definitely some of them go over the top on that.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: They're like 22 bucks for a piece of ground beef and bun.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: So, what is burger week all about?
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: Well, you can come and look at this interactive menu, and it's got like I'm looking at the second one down here at the Abigail Hall in Southwest Portland, the chili cheese fry burger.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Oh man, my mouth is watering already.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the berg comes with it, and just like everything else, all burgers, 10 bucks, four-ounce beef panty with uh barbecue, grilled onions, American cheese, fries on the burger, garlic aioli on a brioche bun.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: And I made the mistake of doing this podcast hungry.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: And like I'm I'm sitting here, look at this.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I got a beef stick in my pocket, and this was gonna suffice until now.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: I'm just throw it across the room.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: So I can't eat that now.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: It's burger time, baby.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: No question about it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: You're gonna you're gonna leave directly from the studio and go get one of these things.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: I love this idea, man.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Anytime, look, this is so good for multiple reasons.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: A, we're feeling the pressure right now as the consumer.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Nobody has enough money in their pockets.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: It's a hundred bucks every time you walk one bag out of the grocery store.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So getting a$10 burger, but not just any burger, like it kind of seems like the way that the Mercury has pulled this out is that these restaurants are going to go above and beyond.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe try something new, uh, try to blow your socks off with their burger, and you get to try it for$10.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's hard for me to be adventurous, Drew, when I'm looking at a$20 burger.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: I would rather go for just a standard bacon cheeseburger if I'm gonna pay that much because I know I'm gonna like that.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: But hey, you know, you want me to try a little peanut butter on the burger, or you want me to try some fries on the burger.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: You throw a$10 charge at me, dude.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I'm all in every time.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: It does allow you to think outside the box because I'm looking at some of these, and yeah, they look extremely creative.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, some of them have like yogurt on it and all kinds of stuff that, you know, greens that I've never seen before.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: This isn't your mom's arugula.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: This is some real advanced stuff.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: Like even the this buffalo blue cheeseburger, I don't know exactly what I'm looking at, but for 10 bucks, I can do it.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Give me two.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Give you two.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I exactly yogurt.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: I I have to tell you right now, is like every I was all adventure and love in my heart until you mentioned yogurt on a burger and everything in my body seized up.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Um tell me a little bit about that one.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Well, see, I've I've scrolled away from it now.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'll I'll work my way back.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: I believe this is it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: The Spanko burger.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, maybe this one.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Oh no, this one doesn't have yogurt.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: This one has taziki.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Greek spice, beef, spinach, lemon feta, olives, and tazeky on a brioche brioche bun.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: See, that's tough for me.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I would travel for that.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: That's at Barber World Foods here in town.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't know if I'd travel for that.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Now, if somebody handed it to me, I'd grub that bad boy down.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I I I find it's about the amount of cucumber and the amount of lemon that go into the Greek food that I eat.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: I I enjoy it, but uh, if they get too heavy on the lemon, Drew, if they get too heavy on the on the cucumber, I start to kind of seize up a little bit.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: But again, for 10 bucks, I mean, that's a car wash.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: That's nothing.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Like at 10 bucks, I'll try it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I'll even if I only take one bite, it's worth it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And the other thing that we haven't even touched on, this is great for looking at new restaurants, which is also great for the restaurants.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Go out and try a place that you've never tried before.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, a place that I have tried, and and I don't know if you've been there downtown, 10 barrel brewing.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: It's got the rooftop bar, it's a good walking distance from Providence Park.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: Well, they've got that yogurt bird for you, Marcus.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Now listen to this.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: It's Pendleton beef patty.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: We can get behind that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Um, arugula, mint yogurt.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: That's where you're gonna have a problem.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Huge problem.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Apple pineapple chutney, white cheddar, grilled halamui.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: What is that?
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: Halam.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: It looks like spell that if you ask me.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure exactly.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: I then maybe that's the type of No, it's not the cheese.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know what halami H A L L O U M I.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: Halami.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: Hallo Halumi.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: It sounds like it's Hawaiian.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: It's a cheese.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: It is, so it's got two kinds of cheese, a white cheddar and a grilled halomui.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is for a cheese from Cyprus, traditionally made from a mixture of goat milk and sheep's milk.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: If you have your goat and your sheep both milking at the same time, you can mix those two and get the cheese that they put on the mint yogurt burger, and then you can sell it to somebody else.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Drew, I'm sorry, that's one I'm not trying.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not traveling.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Ten bucks, no, thank you.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: Now they're not gonna all be for you, but I like this one here.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: The no reservations burger at Bascas uh bar on Broadway, beef patty, sliced mortadella, provolone, uh creole nays, which is like a creole mayonnaise, um, dill pickle on a dos hermanos burger bun.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: I gotta show you this thing.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: It is oh no, so no miners can sit at the bar, but it looks like they have lounge seating, so all families are available.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: Uh focus.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a dude, that's a thick boy right there.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: I I think I could get my lips around that thing.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: You can look at all of these burg dogs uh online right now.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: Well, you can you can click the link, or I'm putting a couple of them in front of the camera if you watch us on YouTube.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, that's burger week.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: When when is burger week for you guys?
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Non-existent, dude.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Wayne County, you used to live here.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Come on now.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: This is something that you have to have.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, uh, I'm gonna go ahead and stop short of calling the leadership of my city what I want to call them.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: But we need a little bit more motivation in our hearts here in Eugene.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: You calling them burgerless?
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I am calling them burger averse, okay?
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Like, I if there was a spinach festival in Lane County, I would be like, yeah, that fits.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: And somebody would probably put moss on the spinach salad, yeah, and we'd all come together and eat dirt and be happy about it.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, uh, we've got a lot of good burgers here in town.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, hometown hero LeMichael James owns a local killer burger here in Eugene, but that's a franchise.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: And while great burgers, I want to see more from Lane County.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: We've got the grilled cheese experience, Drew happens in February.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: We'll get to that when it comes around.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Lacking in scope compared to uh Burger Week in Portland.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: So uh I don't know.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Somebody write a strongly worded letter to somebody who will read it because I would like a burger week.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: I would also like to follow that up with a pizza week, a wings week.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I can do the whole, I got 52 of them.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I could do a whole year of eating in Lane County.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Uh it's just nobody's elected me yet, you know.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Um the write-ins are there.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: You can put my name down and I will make some changes, but I'm not spending money on a campaign.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: And I really think these things are great for the consumer, like you said, that you know, times are tougher, people are a little bit, you know, running low on cash, but it's also great for the establishment, not just for the notoriety, not just for the exposure, but also let's be honest.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: When you go into a place to get the special burger and say you bring the family, your kids don't order that.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: They order off of the menu.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Your wife or your husband, they might be like, you get it.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: I'll have a bite of it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have the chicken parmesan.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: And that becomes a full-blown ticket, and that's the goal is to make it a full ticket for you, right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: So we will link it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: There's one right down the street from me.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Aji Tram is got one which I am gonna definitely try out.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: Now it's it's a little outside my comfort box.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be the last one I tell you about.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: It's the Peter Piper Peck of Peppers burger, and it is, it looks like it's got a little bit of zest, obviously, but it is a beef patty, bacon, pepperjack cheese, poblano, aioli, pickled fresh, and fried jalapenos.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: That one might make your your backside cook, but I should have called that one the sting ring.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: But they do it right over there, that's for sure.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Um, now, in just a second here, we are going to sit down with Travis DeMurs, who came on and sat down with me on the Fit for Radio podcast, which, if you're not following that, do that for us right now.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: But I had the chance to ask him a quick QA, rapid fire questions.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: Of course, he is the voice of the Portland Trailblazers, only the third to do it.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: You know, you had Bill Shawnley, you had Wheels, and then you have Travis DeMurs, lucky enough to have him here.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: But um, before we get to that, I just wanted to say real fast, I saw that the Oregon Ducks coming in at number two in the first, is it the AP poll or is that the coaches?
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Coaches poll.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Coaches, coaches first, yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: And and probably matters to the people that it matters to a little less than the AP poll, but I like the first of the season coaches poll because you actually feel like maybe the coaches had the time to go ahead and and submit their votes themselves because you and I know I covered the ducks for a while for KPW here in town.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Um, the coaches aren't the ones that vote on the coaches poll.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: It's like special offensive assistant three will get that ballot and they fill it out, which is why you get some wild rankings in the coach's poll.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: But uh this one I like, and I like it, Drew, because we didn't get the kiss of death like I thought we were going to coming in in that number one spot.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: So I'll give you the top ten real quick Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Notre Dame, Indiana, Miami, Texas AM, and Oklahoma Old Miss with Alabama at 11.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: The usual suspects, all right there.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: I want to point out uh because somebody brought a ton of heat without us even saying anything about it.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: And they were like, oh yeah, you want to start a Pacific Northwest podcast and ignore the biggest and most important state with the biggest city in the entire Northwest, bye.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: That's what they that's what they said on our post.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: And then I wrote back, no one ever said we were leaving out Washington.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: No one ever said Seattle's kicked off the team.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: You are ass talking.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Um button.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: I fought for it.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: I fought for it, but Drew made the right decision and wouldn't let me leave it out.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: I've wanted that state excommunicated for a long time, but I'm gonna play nice uh only because I have to.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: And let's just remember, Oregon will play Washington at Odson Stadium this year, and Washington starts at number 19.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: And what I'm just gonna say real quick is it does not matter.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: This entire poll is fluff.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: This entire poll is here for our egos and for us to feel comfort because at the end of the day, when you're in a power four conference, you win and you're in.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: You know, now it it helps if you're up in the upper echelon.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: To start ranked and not have to crawl into rank is important, but these teams will destroy each other one by one, by one, by one, until there's only a couple undefeated and single loss teams left.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: And so, in the history of us even starting at 15, you still can get to one, you just keep crushing people.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: And so this has always been a little bit of meh to me, especially now that we're not in a BCS.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: In the BCS era, it's extremely important because you have to be in the top two to make it to the playoff because there is none.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: And so, at least now with a bigger field, I'm not as I'm not as sweaty betty about it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: We have to beat Ohio State.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: We have to beat the juggernauts, we have to beat Washington to finish it off if you're a duck.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: And the same thing goes for the Huskies.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: You you're starting the game at 19, it's not that big a deal.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's gonna be all right.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be alright, son.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Um, it'll be all right.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I'm not calling you, son.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: That that is meant for the uh the team that wears purple and gold, Drew.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: I you know I it's hard.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: It's it's tough.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: I look, I want all of the teams to win.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could talk about a little bit more conference stuff.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, think about the disrespect Indiana must feel right now.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: They haven't lost a Big Ten game in two years.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: They're coming in at number six in the coaches poll as the defending national champion.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Ooh, I'd be hot under the collar.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: But we're at number two, and it's all we've got to talk about right now because we haven't started snapping the ball and kicking it yet.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: So um things are good in Eugene, Drew.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Well, and also this is something worth checking out, and that is that Indiana is ranked sixth, but they had the second most first place votes.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: So there was some hater aid being chugged out there because somebody voted them way down from to fall to six, because 38 first place votes for Ohio State, followed by Indiana, with Georgia and then Oregon getting the fourth most votes for number one.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: So a lot of people probably had Oregon at two or three and was able to keep them there, but Indiana will find a way now because of this to play with the chip on their shoulder.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: And I almost wish we were down the list as a duck, because you know Dan Lanning would find a way to turn that into fuel.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: He exactly will.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: And that's the thing that got me, that has me so worried, Drew, about Indiana is they're coached by a cigarette and it's a filterless one at that.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: So uh old coach Kurt there, he's gonna figure out a way to turn this into billboard fuel as well.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: So uh just glad that that team doesn't show up on our schedule this year.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: And I cannot believe that I have ever said that in a college football sense about the University of Indiana, but that is the college football landscape we live in now, Drew.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: That team was one of, if not the worst, team across all major college football just five or six short years ago, and they hoisted a trophy last year, so anything can happen.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: I do like Signetti, though, I have to admit it, even though he stole our hearts last year.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: I know I like a coach when they wrong me and I don't hate them.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: And he's he's one of those guys where if you and I love Dan, Dan's my guy, but if it wasn't him, Signetti would be a great guy too.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: Um, so I I I applaud some of those coaches.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: There's plenty of coaches in the conference and in the country that I'm like, take a hike.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Caleb DeBors, there's one of them.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Take a hike.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Oh man, how are we?
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: We both thinking about that name at the same time.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: And Ryan Day is another one.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Draw your beard on again, you goofball.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: I can't, I still don't know if that guy's beard is real.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: I can't really tell you.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: It's AI.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: It can't be real.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: The very basis of the Pacific Northwest podcast, the PW pod, is to showcase everything that is great about the Pacific Northwest.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: And that includes great businesses and partnerships.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: And I've got some of the greatest, of course, brought to you by the Stafford Hills Club, where we record all episodes up here in the business suites where work meets play, but it really is the sense of community and the high quality establishment that this is that makes it the very best of the best voted, the best health and wellness facility in the Portland area.

- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Great classes.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: My wife loves them.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: And of course, that saltwater pool on top of premium tennis.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: You just can't beat it.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Another one of those partnerships that I absolutely love.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: That's Motorsport Hillsboro, the premier place to get everything you need when it comes to your off-road adventures or your electric mountain bikes, the gas-gas electric mountain bikes right now, 60% off.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Save yourself over$3,000 and be out cruising the trails while you still have some of the beautiful Pacific Northwest weather around.

- 24:07SPEAKER_03: They got you covered at AxiumpDX.com.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Marcus Bridges joining me, of course.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, thanks for being here like usual.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: Lucky enough to sit down with Travis Demers, the voice of the Portland Trailblazers for a little speed round.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and we'll we'll see what he's got when he's on the clock.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna do a little lightning round.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Sure, let's do it uh before we get out of here.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Um and I'm just gonna fire off, and you just give me a kind of a quick off the top of your head answer, unless uh you really feel like uh you want to get into the story.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm good for whatever.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, here we go.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: First one, favorite blazer you ever covered.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: It's Dame.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, I've been around the team since the 03-04 season.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Um, everything that you see and hear about Dame is exactly who he is.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: He's that kind of guy.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Um, in Milwaukee, his second year in Milwaukee, I had you know him being divorced and having his kids back in Portland while he's in Milwaukee is tough on him.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I got divorced about two years ago, and when I saw him in Milwaukee, he asked me how I was doing.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Like, is it that big of a deal?
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: No.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: But the point being, he cares about people.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: And that's real stuff.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: It is real stuff.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: It was there were no cameras around.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: There's he just he was he's that kind of guy.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Um the things you hear about him are are true.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And forget about the unbelievable things he's done on the court.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I've called every one of his 60 plus point games, his 71 point game, you know, all him as a as a person, that's why he's my favorite guy that I've covered.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: And I love Dame too.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: I I love him as a player, but I also have, because of where I live, um, I've seen him in the wild.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: And I've seen him interact with people, and he's very humble.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: He's very chill, he's courteous.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: He could be a diva if he wanted, he's not.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: And it's incredible.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Favorite arena to call a game.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: It's easy to say Madison Square Garden because I grew up a Knicks fan in New York and I grew up going to that arena.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: And I've seen your smile on your face there.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but the the location there and where we have to go, like, it's one of the worst broadcast positions for radio in the NBA.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: But being in the garden is is very special.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Um Indiana, the concourses there are a museum.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: It's it's amazing.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: It's not a newer arena, but that the They do it right.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: They really do.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And uh, Indiana is basketball.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: That's folklore, yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Um that that arena is it's it's magic.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: What is the toughest game you've ever had to broadcast?
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Anything technically go wrong, or is it just the position?
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Well, when we've had to do games remotely, like there was a game in the the 21-22 season, we were calling games remotely.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Um we were on the road, but we got held back because of uh COVID was, you know, uh I guess there was a another outbreak or something.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: There was a game in Boston, the Blazers won that game.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: In the fourth quarter, um there was a key play where Yousuf Nurkic uh goes to the basket, puts it in, uh missed the first shot, gets the second one to go and was fouled.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking, okay, it's an and one, and that's how I'm talking about it on the radio.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Well, the the sink was off, and the whistle was actually on the first shot.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: So the basket didn't count, it wasn't an and one, it was two free throws.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Those kinds of things, and when we were calling games remotely, those are those are really, really, really challenging.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Calling games remotely is really challenging.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but also like the very first game that I ever called courtside.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Um so I did the one preseason game.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: The next year, the first preseason game that I did was in Vancouver.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Uh Blazer's Raptors in Vancouver, and I'm sitting courtside for the first time ever.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: It is a thousand times faster courtside than it is up where we usually sit.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: And you're blocked by the coach walking in front of you, the officials walking in front of you, and you you really can't see things.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: You have to learn how to see things.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: That's one of the hardest experiences I've ever had.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can only imagine that's gotta be it's gotta be on another level.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Um, most underrated part of being a play-by-play announcer.
- 28:20unknown: Oh man.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Hitting you with the tough ones here.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Um the most underrated part of it.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: You get to show up to work and do something you love.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Like I literally every day I go to work, I'm like, I get to do this.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I have never once with this job thought, I don't want to go to work today.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Not once ever.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: And you always present well.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: If people haven't seen it, you go in dressed to the nines, fresh pair of Jordans, hair cleaned, ready, or not clean, but cleaned up, cut-wise, never a hair out of the line.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Gotta match the Jordans to the suit.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: And you do it, you do it right.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Um, what's your best advice to young broadcasters?
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: The same advice that I was given.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Um, if there's something you want to do, find a way to do it.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Because if if you want to be on the air, find somewhere to go beyond the air and get reps.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Because if you're want if you want to be on the air and you're producing, guess what?
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: You're gonna end up being a producer.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Whatever it is that you want to do, even if some if it's something that nobody's listening to, go do it.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Find a way to do it.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: And don't give up.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: And I think that's great advice because it can get discouraging when you're board oping at midnight or or whatever it is.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: I don't think there were many people listening midnight to 6 a.m.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: on K D U K, K Duck, and Eugene when I when I was kicking off my career, but also it was probably best people didn't hear me.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: Needed to get a little bit of rust off this thing.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Exactly, and get it going.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: What's one game you'll never forget?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: The four overtime game.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, every time you thought that game was gonna be over, it just kept going.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And kept going and kept going.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And guys are fouling out.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: And then you know, unsung heroes, Rodney Hood coming up with huge plays, and like that game, it was the game that never ended and the game you didn't want to end.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: And the fact that the Blazers won that game made it made a little better.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: So, like after that, you were probably almost like, was I there?
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Did that happen?
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Happen?
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was incredible.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Chad Doing was doing the fifth quarter up in the the 300 level, and he was on to like 2 a.m.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: I I had so much energy, I ran up there and I was on with him for like an hour after that.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Like it was it was unbelievable.
- 30:21SPEAKER_03: What is your um your favorite interaction with a player, coach, or vet of the NBA?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Man.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Um there's a lot of them.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Like uh getting to know Mike Breen, who was somebody that I listened to calling Knicks games growing up.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: But this year in the playoffs in San Antonio, um, Reggie Miller was calling game one.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: So I'm at shoot around, you know, several hours before the game, and I see Reggie just hanging out there in sweats.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Now keep in mind, I was 12, 13 years old during the Knicks-Pacers rivalry era.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, and that was war.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:58unknown: Yeah.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: The choke and the whole thing.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: You've ever seen the uh 30 for 30 with Reggie Miller versus the New York Knicks, whatever it's called.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I I despised Reggie Miller as a basketball player.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I didn't like to admit that I actually do like him as a broadcaster.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: And he actually seems like a pretty fun, nice dude, but I would never publicly ever admit that anywhere.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's the guy you love on your team when he's on the other side.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: You're like, I hate this guy.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: So he's he's watching practice, and I go over and I introduce myself to him, tell him who I am.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: He's like, oh yeah, how's it going?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: And then he starts picking my brain about the team, about the game.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: You're trying to do his job and his research.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: And he was great.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: A few minutes into that, I look at him and say, Hey, Reggie.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: So uh I grew up in New York, and he looks at me, he just starts laughing.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Just laughing.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: And he puts his hand on my shoulder and he's doing like laughing.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: He's like, I know where this is going.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I was uh I was 13 years old in 1995.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Game one at the garden crushed me.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Patrick Ewing missing that shot in game seven.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: I cried, man.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I cried.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: I despised the Pacers and I despised Reggie Miller.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: And he looks at me and he's got this big smile on his face.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: And he extends his arm out, out, arms out wide, and he goes, Let me apologize.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Come here, give me a hug.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: And he not only does he hug me, but he does the little pat on the pat on the back type thing.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm I'm sorry.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: I just want to apologize and want to apologize for for being the reason that that you cried.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, is Reggie Miller my best friend now?
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Like, can I get your cell phone number?
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Are we friends?
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Like, is Reggie Miller cool now?
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And then we like we had a fun moment.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Then we're talking a little bit more about the game, and as you know, we're we're departing, he goes, just want to apologize again.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: If you can get into a time machine and apologize to 13-year-old me, yeah, then we're cool.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: But if you dry my tears.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Now, this is all like just the sports fan, um, petty sports fan.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: We've all got a little bit of that in us.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: There's a number of players who, for whatever reason or another, I just I despise Pedro Martinez as a as a Yankees fan.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, despise Pedro.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: But I watch him on TV and it's like that dude's fun.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: Why am I finding myself liking Pedro Martinez?
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: This is not okay.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: And for those who don't know, playing for the Boston Red Sox, he was an arch enemy to the Yankees.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Um, but now Reggie, like Reggie's my friend.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And I text my buddy Kevin, who is the biggest Knicks fan I've ever met in my life.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: He flew down to San Antonio for game five when the Knicks won the title.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Um, he did not really appreciate me telling him that story.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but at some point you got to soften the blow.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: You know, I I always say this, and I'm and I you can quote me.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Real fans cry.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Real fans hold grudges.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Um, but when you see the human side of somebody and you become a kind of a colleague, it's different.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: You can wash it off a little bit.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: You know, there are many moments across all sports.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: I'm still mad at the New Orleans Saints for cheating and for Bounty Gate.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: You know, they straight up stole my Vikings championship.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: I'll forever be mad.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: I look at Sean Payton, I'm like, you cheating, you know, yeah, palm lining weasel.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: But I have to let it go.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: If he was in the room and he was being nice to me, I might just let it go.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: There are some things as a Vikings fan that are just part of sports, right?
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Gary Anderson.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: As a Giants fan, I'm sorry I have to bring this up, but 41-0.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: You know, there there are some things that are just part of it.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: But the fact that that was something that could have and should have gone differently, that's hard to swallow, man.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it absolutely is.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: Well, I think it's uh it's amazing that you took the time to be here, and I truly thank you for that.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: I say it to people all the time, and now it's locked in on the podcast here that you grinded your way to this.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: You did it, and you did it for small wages, no wages, get me in the door, move me across the country, back, back again.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: We talked Oregon Trail.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: They didn't ever go back and then back over.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: They would have got malaria.
