- 1:36Marlow the Easy Mark. I was hired to find a blackmailer and I did,
- 1:42but first I found it badly beating a Dunnis Jezebel with an accent and
- 1:46a man who had been an easy mark for murder from the pen of Raymond
- 1:51Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character as CBS
- 1:56presents The Adventures of Philip Marlowe and now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe,
- 2:12we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Easy Mark. I'd spent a
- 2:30dull day on adella subject which was don't get caught with your income tax returned
- 2:34down at midnight March fifteenth, after calling time for a thick steake designated the
- 2:38boast of the stamina of a private detective, but nevertheless non deductible, I
- 2:44reluctantly headed back to my office, where I found both my conscience and the
- 2:46long form ten forty still witting, which meant there was no way out.
- 2:51But dull day was going to stretch on into the night. But then I
- 2:54got a break because my telephone rang and the call was from one Missus Corey
- 2:58Gilbert, respective client who wanted action in a hurry, Mallow, You've got
- 3:04to move fast. I just found out that my husband Ross will be at
- 3:07thirty eight h six Melrose Avenue in twenty minutes, and I know that means
- 3:09trouble. Just besides Missus Gilbert how do you spell trouble with a capital B?
- 3:14Is in blackmail? There's no time for details. Now just get to
- 3:15that of dress and find out who Ross is meeting with. Only hurry,
- 3:19Mallow, please, hurry after what, missus Gilbert, I've never met your
- 3:22husband? Remember? Oh? Oh, yes, Well he's tall, dark
- 3:24eyes, dark hair, very handsome and the blackmail is short, stocky and
- 3:29repulsive. I suppose I've never seen the blackmailer. All right, missus Gilbert,
- 3:31where can I reach you? Well? I live at four three nine
- 3:35and a half Ogden Drive. The phone number is Gladstone eight one nine five
- 3:38eight nine five. All right, missus Gilbert, I'll call you. Thanks,
- 3:40Oh Mallow, yeah, hurry will you you see? I? I
- 3:45love my husband. I was a little more than twenty minutes finding the address
- 3:54hand Melrose. When I finally pulled up and parked away from the place.
- 3:58I figured being late didn't matter because number thirty eight oh six turned out to
- 4:01be an unfinished house set deep in an acre of building materials. I was
- 4:06about to head for a telephone and get an explanation from a confused lady named
- 4:10Corey Gilbert, when a lot of noise from what would someday be a living
- 4:14room change my mind, and I knew that my client had the right address
- 4:16after all, because there, in the pale light of a slice of moon,
- 4:20taking the last of an awful beating from a thin man with a thick
- 4:24beard and a lot of muscle, was Ross Gilbert. Dark eyes and dark
- 4:28hair, like she said, but no longer very handsome. Stop worrying,
- 4:34Gilbert, I'm almost crud you except for this a present from their net,
- 4:41and just one more from the net. Wow. At last, punch stacked
- 4:50Grass Gilbert into a pile of rough lumber like it was another one by twelve,
- 4:55and as he slowly scraped to the floor unconscious, thick Beard dusted himself
- 4:59off, lightly jerked it his tie, and stepped out of the opening reserve
- 5:01for a future front door. I started over to help Ross Gilbert, but
- 5:05then I remembered that my client wanted to know who her husband was meeting,
- 5:09and why not how hard or fast he could swing, So I decided for
- 5:13the time being to play it quiet. When thick Beard got into his car,
- 5:15I got into mine. I followed him all the way to Beverly Hills,
- 5:29where he pulled to a stop in front of the Camden arms Court.
- 5:31I parked lights out and watched him strut up a flagstone walk and knock on
- 5:34the door of a bungalow number four, which was dark. When he knocked
- 5:38again and it stayed dark. He took an envelope out of his pocket,
- 5:40wrote something on it and jammed it into the mailbox. Then he got back
- 5:44into his car and started away fast. I walked up to the bungalow and
- 5:47helped myself to thick Beard's empty envelope. On one side, scrawled in pencil
- 5:51and smudge was the telephone number Sunset three one six seven six. On the
- 5:57other payment delivered Ok, plumber, plumber. I shot the message into my
- 6:01pocket, struck a match and started looking for a name on the front door.
- 6:05But then I care pulled up in a moment later. I had help.
- 6:11I can be of some assistance. Yes, I was just oh,
- 6:18Nannette Nanette Lamack that I do not know you miss here, No, no,
- 6:26you don't. I think if you will stop staring and begin talking,
- 6:31we will do much better. Who are you? Philip Marlowe, a friend
- 6:38of plumbers. He asked me to deliver a message for him. Do I
- 6:41go on of course, mister Mallow, but please come inside. It is
- 6:47so much nicer the hair. Nannette was so right about it being nicer.
- 6:58Inside there were lights, and that made it easier to see that the lady
- 7:02with a thick French accent and the gorgeous vaistline was something that could have musted
- 7:06her own foreign legion. She was narrow, green eyes and open her red
- 7:11lips, topped by a lot of close crop, soft brown curls that kept
- 7:15running into each other. And for a dress, she was wearing about a
- 7:18quarter of a mile of draped chiffon that, in the right places fitted a
- 7:21little closer than her own skin. When I told her what I claimed it
- 7:26had been a message from Plumber himself, she purred her thanks and started to
- 7:29mix me a drink. When I brought up the subject of blackmail, she
- 7:31stopped abruptly spilling a bottle of perfectly good Kentucky tapan all over the table.
- 7:36Blackmail, what do you mean? Mallow? Extortion? Honey, the malpractice
- 7:43of getting a lot for knowing a little. That's not nice. You are
- 7:46swinging wild now, Musher, maybe, but if it doesn't bother you,
- 7:49I'll stay right with it, because I'd like to know why you and Plumber,
- 7:53who have such an easy mark, insist on throwing rocks? What easy
- 7:56mark are you talking about? That tall doc and used to be a handsome
- 7:59guy I named Ross Gilbert, of course, so the now, lou Yeah,
- 8:07but don't make it too sweet, honey, I can't take it that
- 8:09Waynette will be very careful not to make it too sweet. There. Tell
- 8:18me, Monchell, when did you last see Plumber before tonight? I mean,
- 8:24I'm not sure. I think it was at the fights over at the
- 8:26Legion Stadium last week. How do I get my drink? Way? Montchell?
- 8:31You will get your drink in your face, Liar. Tell me,
- 8:37Franchie, is that pearl handle thirty two considered the very latest lama? Chancely
- 8:43you have lied to memon on me. You see, Plumber only arrived in
- 8:46Los Angeles the day before yesterday for the first time in his life. All
- 8:50Right, I made a mistake about seeing Plumber that fights last week. Why
- 8:54don't you put away the gun and we'll talk about Ross Gilbert Gilbert? And
- 8:58then I hate with all my heart a man it could kill right this minute,
- 9:01and that mellow goes for anyone connected with him. So now get out,
- 9:05Oh, without even so much as a novew I reserve for my friends
- 9:11Mallow, good night, Hello, Malo, Missus Gilbert? Is Ross?
- 9:28Alright? Ross isn't here, Marlow? What happened to him? He ran
- 9:31into an ugly beating at that address on Melrose, something nasty. If'm out
- 9:35of town named Plumber is responsible? Have you hear of him? And or
- 9:37and imported Jezebel called Nanette La Mark? No, I haven't. But what
- 9:41about Ross? What's wrong with him? Nothing that a pound of beef steak
- 9:45and enough liniment can't cure. But before we worry about Ross, Missus Gilbert,
- 9:48one more thing. It's a phone number I found on the back of
- 9:50an envelope that belong to Plumber. Number Sunset three one six seven six.
- 9:56What somebody you know? Yes, someone I know very well. It's the
- 10:00telephone number of my ex husband, Emory Marsh Emory Marsh, eh fancy dress
- 10:03designer on Wiltshire. That's right, But what's he got to do with all
- 10:07this? Emory only met Ross once in Mexico a party at Ensnata. Well,
- 10:11look, Missus Gilbert, why don't we postpone collecting Ross until I find
- 10:15out a little more. Where does your ex husband Marsh live in Santa Monica,
- 10:20But there's a good chance that he's still at his place on Wilshire.
- 10:22He does most of his work at night. Well, and Wilsha Bulevard's my
- 10:24next step. I'll try to make it a quick one. Goodbye. Emory
- 10:33Marsh's place on Wilshere was an expensive shop with a single velvet line show window
- 10:37that was home for a beautiful mannequin wearing an evening gown that would drop at
- 10:41the first sneeze. After I spent five minutes stumping on a plush, leather
- 10:46or posted portal, a light finally clicked on someplace inside, and a moment
- 10:52later Emory Marsh opened the door. He was tall, forty five, Sandy
- 10:56had and looked less like a dress designer than I did. After following his
- 11:00tweet back into an inner sanctum that was comb plywood behind Chinese modern furniture,
- 11:05I decided to play it all most straight. Well, mister Marlow, what
- 11:07can I do for you now? It's a little too early to tell.
- 11:11I'm a private detective, mister Marsh, and I'm working for your ex wife,
- 11:13Corey Gilbert. Corey m is she in trouble, mister Morrow. Oh
- 11:18no, close to it. Tell me, mister marsh, when you were
- 11:20last over to Nanette La Mark's place at Camden Arms. When was that Nanette
- 11:24La Mar Yeah, I've never heard of her, nor a man named Plumber
- 11:30nor a man named Plumber? Who are they? Well in the order?
- 11:33I tossed them out of Mademoiselle with a touchy temper and a thug who needs
- 11:35a shave. I don't understand. How do they concern me? Oh?
- 11:39Maybe they don't, but your telephone number turned up on Plumber. Both Plumber
- 11:43and Nanetta tied onto a man who at this moment is probably picking himself up
- 11:48off the floor of an unfinished house at thirty eight h six Melrose Avenue.
- 11:52His name, mister Marsh, is Ross Gilbert Gilbert. Yes, that's right.
- 11:56What do you know about him? Very little? I only met him
- 11:58once at to Revera Pacifico Revera Pacifica, the hotel at en Sonata in Mexico.
- 12:03Matter of fact, it was the same night that he met Corey,
- 12:07which didn't make you very happy. No, you've got it wrong. Corey
- 12:11and I were already divorced. The three of us meeting was nothing more than
- 12:15an accident. And when Ross and Corey parlayed that accident in the marriage,
- 12:20we are still smiling better than that, mister Marlowe. When that happened a
- 12:22month ago, I was grinning. You see, until then I had been
- 12:26paying Corey twelve hundred dollars a month alimony for two and a half years,
- 12:31and Corey gave all that up for love and Ross Gilbert. Ross Gilbert isn't
- 12:35exactly a pauper, mister Marlowe. No, I guess not. Blackmailing a
- 12:39pauper doesn't add up. What did you say, mister marlow I said,
- 12:46putting the bite on somebody who has nothing is like sucking a lollipop with a
- 12:50cellophane on it. You get action, but no results. You see,
- 12:52And tell me why does the word blackmail come home to roost, mister Marsh.
- 12:56It wouldn't happen to know who the gilly party is, would you,
- 13:00No, mister mollow. And what's more, if I did, I certainly
- 13:03wouldn't keep that sort of thing to myself. Oh no, I don't think
- 13:05you would. I. Oh. Thanks anyway, mister Marsh, you've been
- 13:09a big help. I'm glad And if I can be of any further help.
- 13:11Don't hesitate to call on me, mister Mollow, Please, I won't,
- 13:16mister marsh, you can depend on it. All the way from Wisha
- 13:26Boulevard and Missus Gilbert's place on Ogden Drive, I kept wondering who wanted,
- 13:30how much out of Ross Gilbert and why? About twenty minutes later, when
- 13:33I pulled up in front of the house, I started concentrating on my client,
- 13:37who had to meet the woman standing next to a green cope in the
- 13:39driveway and waiting in double time. Corey Gilbert was long flowing blonde hair draped
- 13:50over his shoulders that at the moment looked like they were carrying the weight to
- 13:52the world. But she was pretty a worried than most women who always keep
- 13:56it gay. Mister Mollow, Yeah, missus Gilbert, he has been shown
- 14:01up yet, No Mallow, what do you suppose take get easy? Maybe
- 14:03we better have another look at thirty eight h six Melrose Avenue. H whatever
- 14:07you say, Shall I drive if you've got a license, Yes, mister
- 14:11Mollow, I've got a license. Well, okay, let's go the way
- 14:24we took off in Corey's nash. I wasn't sure whether her license was for
- 14:26driving a car or an airplane, And while she kept at eighty three and
- 14:30a half triple A on the accelerator, she talked about her husband and why
- 14:33she was worried. By the time we were near the place, I knew
- 14:37all about the party in that Sonata, the Whirlwind Courtship, and what a
- 14:39fine guy Ross Gilbert was. When we got out of the car and started
- 14:43over the last one hundred yards toward the unfinished house, I'd learned everything Corey
- 14:48knew about the blackmail angle, which wasn't very much. It started last week
- 14:52Mallo, when we got back from our honeymoon. Ross wasn't himself at all.
- 14:54He was worried. He forgot how to laugh. He argued with me
- 14:56over any and everything. A blackmail come in, I don't know. He
- 15:01wouldn't tell me what was wrong. Then this evening, just before I called
- 15:05you, I overheard him talking on the telephone. That's when I caught the
- 15:07word blackmail and this address. Now, maybe Ross will be able to fill
- 15:11in a few of the blanks for us. Oh, he was over here
- 15:15in this room on a pile of lumber when I came PLUMBA must have done
- 15:24a lot more damage than I figured. Take it easy, Take it easy,
- 15:28baby. What is it is? He is he? I'm afraid he
- 15:33is Cary that man, that man he beat him to dead. Oh Cory.
- 15:39That round hole in Gilbert's chest wasn't made by a fist. Where I
- 15:43stand, it looks like a thirty two caliber bullet. In just a moment,
- 15:56we will return to the second act of the adventures Philip Marlowe, but
- 16:00first for some new wrinkles in the mystery field looked on the face of mister
- 16:04Jack Benny, eminent producer of the mystery comedy The Lucky Stiff, which opened
- 16:10in New York today. Although mister Benny stars are Dorothy Lamore, Claire Trevor,
- 16:15and Brian don Levy, Jack's face is covered with new wrinkles because he
- 16:18couldn't be in New York to sell the tickets himself. He's remaining in Hollywood
- 16:22to appear tomorrow night on CBS on The Jack Benny Show with Mary Livingston,
- 16:27Don Wilson, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, and Rochester, so be sure
- 16:32to listen. And now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the
- 16:37second act of Philip Marlowe and tonight's story the easy Mark. Corey Gilbert's face
- 16:52went sickly white and a mouth twisted on the brink of histeria. As she
- 16:56stared at the dead man. I turned her away from it to a window.
- 17:00She did the fastest job of pulling herself together I'd ever seen, and
- 17:03I went back to the body. On the way, I noticed a folded
- 17:07scrap of paper on the floor. It was a page torn out of a
- 17:11desk diary, but all that was written on it was the address of the
- 17:12unfinished house we were in. I looked down at what had once been ross
- 17:17killers set up didn't make any sense. A victim of blackmail had been beaten
- 17:21up by a total stranger, and then a little while later murdered. Somebody
- 17:25had killed the goose that was laying the golden eggs, and it didn't figure
- 17:27in any direction. And I just about decided to go through his pockets when
- 17:32a sound from Corey changed my mind. Wallow, Wallow, come here quick,
- 17:36What is it, Courry? Is someone out there? I saw a
- 17:38shadow more get away from the window. Wallow there running Why? It's a
- 17:42woman, yeah, and quite a woman. What do you know? She's
- 17:48crossing the street now who is it mallow? Who is she? Character as
- 17:52French as Milanie's eighteen ninety, only she's more like nitric acid than sella dressing.
- 17:56Corey, her name is naned La Mark. She's getting in that car.
- 17:59How're you going to stop her? Now, I've got a line on
- 18:02miss Lamargh. I can find her. But she was hiding here. She
- 18:04could be the one who shot Ross, couldn't she easily? In fact,
- 18:07right now she's the odds on favorite, which is also Cagy And well,
- 18:11I better look if you get her on home ground where she'll talk. Besides,
- 18:14there's a big chunk of this business. It doesn't follow. What do
- 18:17you mean? Well, look, the murder came out in reverse. Ross
- 18:18was paying off, so he should have been the killer instead of the corpse,
- 18:22which means is more than blackmail involved. I don't know what you're talking
- 18:26about. All I know is he's dead and that woman killed him. Maybe,
- 18:29come on, Corey, let's get out of here. Where are we
- 18:30going? Well, first you take me back to my car, and then
- 18:33I got a job for you to do. What kind of a job.
- 18:34Well, I found this page ripped out of a desk's diary, probably Ross's
- 18:38I want you to go through all his things and find that diary for me.
- 18:42There might be something else in it that will give us a connection.
- 18:45All right, where are you going? I got to pay a call and
- 18:47Annette, only this time I'm bringing my own welcome Matt. I think i'll
- 18:51need it after Corey dropped me off, if I call lieutenanty Burrow, a
- 19:00homicide reported the body. And then I got into my own car and drove
- 19:03out to Beverly Hills again to the Camden Arms Court, and that's bungalow had
- 19:07lights on. I parked down the street and made tracks back through the landscape
- 19:11into a side window, and that was playing pinup girl on the arm of
- 19:15a divan. She watched someone pace back and forth across the room. When
- 19:19I got close enough to hear what was being said, that someone turned out
- 19:22to be Corey Gilbert's first husband, Emory Marsh. I like chickens with their
- 19:26heads off. So Ross Gilbert was shot to death. But I've got to
- 19:29know the truth about one thing, miss La Marck. My entire life's work
- 19:32is at stay. Can't you understand right, Monsieur Marsh, do not break
- 19:34out into tears. I will tell you Blanar is merely a private investigator I
- 19:38hired to locate Ross Gilbert for me. Now are you happy? No?
- 19:42Why did such a person have my telephone number? That's what I want to
- 19:45know. I'll be ruined if I'm involved in this mess. My reputation means
- 19:48everything to my business, and well, things aren't going to well just now.
- 19:52If I'm connected with a scandal, I'll be wiped out. We'll stop
- 19:56worrying. I saw you with Ross Gilbert three or four times before he so
- 20:00I gave your name to Plama as a possible lead to was that is all?
- 20:03Why did you want to find Ralf Gilbert? That Monamie has none of
- 20:07your business? You found out what you wanted, So good night? All
- 20:11right, I'll go. What can I count on you to keep my name
- 20:15out of this? Listen? I am counting on me to keep my own
- 20:18name out of it, and I will be very busy doing that. Good
- 20:21night. I blasted myself up against the side of the house and watched Emory
- 20:29marsh leave. He looked anything but happy over the result of his interview with
- 20:33Annette. But I figured I had the benefit of experience to work with and
- 20:36less to lose than he had. So I waited until he was out of
- 20:38sight, and then I stepped up to the door and braced myself and tried
- 20:41my luck. You again. Yeah, and I want to talk to you.
- 20:48Get your put out of my day, get out of your get out,
- 20:53not until we've had a nice, quiet chat, manette, And I
- 20:56think we'll take up where Emory marsh left off. What look, just who
- 21:02exactly are you? Mallow? Your boy? Plumber and I had this in
- 21:04fraternity brothers, but there the similarity ends. Just another chief private detective.
- 21:11Okay, baby, if that tough stuff's the only language, understand, we'll
- 21:14talk that. Don't stop it leave me? Oh you you ape. I'd
- 21:19be nice to me if I were you a ninette, because I just love
- 21:22to see a roper on that lovely neck of yours. And what's more,
- 21:25I can almost put one there. You're in a mess right up to your
- 21:27accent, So start making answers beautiful and keeping straight. First, why did
- 21:32you put Plumber on ross Gilbert's trail? Because he double cost me? That
- 21:37is why double crossed your house. He ran away from me. He was
- 21:40mine, all bought and paid for. You understand, not exactly when I
- 21:44met him, he was flat broke. I bought him every decent stitch of
- 21:47clothes that he had, gave him everything he needed to be a gentleman because
- 21:51we were going to be married. And then he ran out on me and
- 21:52took everything with him that he could lay his hands on. Going. Nobody
- 21:56does that to na La Marck. Nobody. They hired that license thug Plummet
- 22:00to fine them and beat him half to death. Right exactly, Well,
- 22:03go ahead, baby, this story doesn't end there. Tell me the rest,
- 22:06the good part about how you waited until Plumber got through with him,
- 22:08and then you went down to that unfinished blueprint out of house and gardens and
- 22:11killed him. No, no, that is not true. I did not
- 22:15do that. I could not. It's no bigger lie than the rest of
- 22:18it. Why is that pearl handle thirty two of yours? Now? And
- 22:21don't reach for it. Just tell me what do you want to I want
- 22:25to see if it's been fired? Now? Where is it all is?
- 22:26Jack? Oh? Fine, Plumber, Missla Mark might not like for you
- 22:30to see her gun. Oh, I thought you would never hit you.
- 22:33There's this character, Miss slam Mark. You're another private detective Milo by name
- 22:37no kidding. Well, we got a lot in common have them with Jack?
- 22:41Yes, yes, we've each got two arms and two legs. And
- 22:45the name is Phil. Oh that's the way it is. Huh. Well,
- 22:48listen, Jack, you got no business here in the first place.
- 22:51But two cents, I'll chop you out. You're even cheaper than I figured.
- 22:53Wow, you gonna put away that big nasty gun too, because I
- 22:56got your cold an envelope you're stuck in that that's mailbox tonight had a slip
- 23:00of paper inside one of your old clients. Huh, what are you talking
- 23:03about? Can't you guess? Hey? You want to say it? Well,
- 23:07yeah, yeah, let's have a look at that. Okay, take
- 23:08a good Come on, drop the gun, Come on, drop it my
- 23:12arm all right now, fold up. There's your bug and basement detective,
- 23:18and that you didn't get your money's worth, did you. Shall we take
- 23:22a look at that pearl handled gun of yours. It is over there in
- 23:26my bag. Thanks, m clips full and that smells shoes and gun.
- 23:33Of course not. I did not cure us where I was, not even
- 23:36inside of that building where he was. Yeah, I know, but wait
- 23:40a minute, say that again, I said, I was never inside that
- 23:44unfinished house where he was found. When I drove up, you were already
- 23:48there, so I let yeah, I know, and Plumber's gun is fully
- 23:52loaded hasn't been fired either. Baby. You've just given me a great idea,
- 23:57an idea but I do not understand I have. I'll explain it to
- 24:00you later. And incidentally, you better be around right now. I've got
- 24:03to find out one more thing and then maybe i'll pop this whole ship bang
- 24:04wide open, mister Morrow. Good evening, mister Marsh. Lucky to find
- 24:18you're still working. Huh late, ours are a habit with me these days.
- 24:22Come in, thanks, mister Marsh. I've come back for that help
- 24:27you off at me earlier this evening. I see, well the offer is
- 24:32still good. Fine. I think your ex wife Corey is lying to me.
- 24:37She claims you didn't know Ross Gilbert, that you only met him once
- 24:40at that party in en Sonata. But you didn't know him, didn't you?
- 24:42Why? Yes, As a matter of fact, I did get acquainted
- 24:45with Ross slightly. We had dinner together a few times. Huh. You
- 24:49really did favor his marriage to Corey because it freed you automatically, and that
- 24:52alimony Lord you were carrying. That's correct, Mallow, but I don't.
- 24:56It's also correct, isn't it that you couldn't afford to go to co to
- 25:00have your alimony reduced because that would let your snobbish client tell know you were
- 25:03going on the rocks. Yes, that's also true. And maybe it's true
- 25:07that you actually engineered the marriage and it backfired on you. Very smart,
- 25:12mister Marlowe. Just keep your hands at your side. This might go off.
- 25:18Yeah O, yes, well I expected a reaction, but not quite
- 25:23so soon. Too bad. I'll trouble you for your gun now that you've
- 25:27got it all figured out. Yes, marlow I engineered that marriage. Corey
- 25:33was attracted to Gilbert, but he was broke. I knew that would scare
- 25:37Corey off if she found out. So you and Corey made a deal,
- 25:41particularly with Ross. He wanted to marry Corey. You supplied the cash for
- 25:45his courtship, right, Yes, only he wouldn't stop there. He kept
- 25:51demanding more. Sure it figured from the start Ross wasn't being blackmail He was
- 25:55the blackmailer himself, and that made you worse off than before. So you
- 25:57killed him. You're so right, mister Marlowe. And Remember, the price
- 26:03for two murders is the same as for one. So you've really left me
- 26:07no alternative. I'll give you an alternative, Emory, Corey, one thing
- 26:12you didn't count on. I really loved Ross Gilbert. Well, I guess
- 26:26that winds it up, Corey. Emory's in the hospital, and Nannette and
- 26:30Plummer are both in the clink. Too bad. I only hit Emory in
- 26:33the hand. I never could trust my aim. It's always been bad in
- 26:37a lot of ways. It was good enough tonight, baby. Lucky for
- 26:40me, you showed up when you did. Say what made you come to
- 26:42Marcius place? Anyway? With that page from the desk diary? Paid off
- 26:47Marlow. Only we made a mistake. Huh. It didn't come from Ross's
- 26:49diary. It came from Emory's. I finally remembered his handwriting. Now you
- 26:55tell me something, Malow. Yeah, how did you know Emory was guilty?
- 27:00Well, he made the oldest slip in the book. But he was
- 27:03talking to Nanette. I overheard him say that Ross had been shot. Emory
- 27:07had no way of knowing that Gilbert was dead or how he had been killed,
- 27:08unless Nanette told him. For a while, I thought she had,
- 27:11But then I found out that she couldn't have because she'd never been inside the
- 27:15house where we found Ross, so it had to be memory. Sure,
- 27:18I see, well, mollow, What does a girl say at the end
- 27:25of the night like this? Thanks or something? Just thanks will be enough.
- 27:30I got to do my income text. Can I give you a lift?
- 27:33No? No, I'll walk awhile. I've got some thinking to do
- 27:38about marksmanship, but call me some time later on. Will you just to
- 27:44see if I'm shooting in the right direction? You can count on a curry.
- 27:48Thanks, Good night, Phil. I watched her for a moment as
- 27:56she walked down the street all by herself, deep in her own thoughts,
- 28:00and it looked to me like she was playing it strictly square. I almost
- 28:03wanted to follow him. The first time in a long time, I felt
- 28:07like I wanted to get to know a client better. But March fifteenth can
- 28:11slip up awfully fast, and that long form ten forty was still unfinished and
- 28:15waiting for me in my office. So I decided to go back and work
- 28:19on my income text and play it strictly square too. After all, that's
- 28:22really the easiest way in a long run. Yeah, I keep telling myself.
- 28:42The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, created by Raymond Chandler, stars Gerald Moore
- 28:48and is produced by Norman McDonald. The script by Meldon La Robert Mitchell and
- 28:52Gene Levitt, was directed by Ralph Rose. Featured in the cast where Sylvia
- 28:56sims Lorette, Phil Brandt, Ken Harvey, and Paul Duball. The special
- 29:00music was by Richard o'uran. He assured me with us again next week when
- 29:07Philip Marlowe says there was a man with a bad hut, a telephone number
- 29:12scribbled on a cash register receipt, and a copse on the other side of
- 29:17town. But I couldn't see the connection between them until I realized they were
- 29:19all tied together by the same long rope. Worth thirty thousand dollars. Next

- 30:18which follows immediately over most of these same stations. This is Roy Rowan
- 30:29speaking for CBS Jack Benny's new address Sunday Night on CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 30:47Welcome back. A nice twist mystery here. I think this one definitely
- 30:52was very engaging when you're dealing with what looks like Marlow said, looks like
- 31:00things happened backwards, though Marlow works it out so that it does make sense
- 31:07in the end. All right, and now we do turn to some listener
- 31:14comments and feedback. Jackie the listener who emailed yesterday about their old time radio
- 31:22collection, there was an additional question that I neglected to read. It didn't
- 31:26realize I hadn't till i'd finished a recording. Jackie said, would you ever
- 31:30consider adding tales of the Texas Rangers program to your show. It does classified
- 31:37as a Western or adventure, but it really is a wonderful detective show that
- 31:41starred Joel McCrae. Well, thanks so much for the question, Jackie and
- 31:45I do intend to add it. However, it will be on Saturday in
- 31:49place of Dragnets, so we're about six years away from playing it. Plus
- 31:57I think we do. We would do tea Man in between, but that's
- 32:02only We've only have two episodes of that show in existence as of now.
- 32:07I'd recommend checking out Old Time Radio Westerns Andrew RYANSOTR Westerns dot Com. Six
- 32:14years can be a little ways to wait, but yeah, that is on
- 32:17my list to eventually do. Christina emails in from Arizona, says hi,
- 32:22mister Graham, I hope you're great detect I love your Great Detectors of Old
- 32:27Time Radio podcast, Johnny Dowler and Rogues Gallery are among my favorites. Your
- 32:32commentaries at the beginning and the end of each show are truly informative. I
- 32:36was wondering if you ever considered adding the complete Richard Diamond Private Detective. You're
- 32:40awesome podcast. Thank you for your time and fantastic shows. Well, Christina,
- 32:46I have and I do plan on it, and it will be a
- 32:50little bit sooner than we get to Tales of the Texas Rangers. I actually
- 32:54have Richard Diamond penciled in to replace the Adventures of Philip Marlow once that's done.
- 33:05But since we just started Philip Marlow, you've still got a little less
- 33:08than two years to go and then we'll be over to Richard Diamond. So
- 33:15thanks so much for the question. And you can't take a look at a
- 33:19list of all the shows we do intend to do at biglist dot Great Detectives
- 33:22dot net, and that'll give you an idea of what we've got planned.
- 33:28Quite a few shows don't know tomframes on all or even most of them,
- 33:34but we definitely want to get to most of the really interesting programs out there
- 33:40at any right. That'll do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with
- 33:44Nick Carter. Next Wednesday, another episode of Philip Marlow and the Meantime.
