- 0:58You're already taking the first step. Just by
- 1:01joining us here today. I've heard so many people
- 1:06talk about the necessity of having that avatar.
- 1:08And I'll be honest with you, I don't really have
- 1:11one. Um, I mean, I guess I say that, I guess
- 1:15I kind of do, but it's not necessarily a specific
- 1:19type of, like a specifically type of employed
- 1:23person, like they're employed in a certain industry
- 1:26or anything like that. It's more people that
- 1:28I've been able to establish a deep relationship
- 1:30with. And so there's a different level of trust
- 1:33there. And so maybe that's the avatar is that
- 1:38level of trust in the relationship avatar. I
- 1:41don't even know. I mean, is that, is that something
- 1:43that could be for real? No, I don't think so.
- 1:46Angel, you've met a whole bunch of multifamily
- 1:49syndicators over the last couple of years. I've
- 1:52seen you networking a ton all over the place.
- 1:55You've been building a brand. I think what you're
- 1:58trying to do is help people as they scale. And
- 2:01that's why you have this conference is because
- 2:02you want to lift other people up and succeed.
- 2:07But one of the things that my mentor taught me
- 2:09right off the beginning, her name is Annie Dickerson.
- 2:12She's got a company called Good Egg Investments.
- 2:15And we did a series called The Raising Money
- 2:17Minute. where we spent talk spent a lot of time
- 2:20talking about just avatar creation and she told
- 2:23me like in order to dial in your messaging and
- 2:27make it so that people can resonate with it you
- 2:29got to pick a specific person and go into crazy
- 2:33depth like so her Avatar is like this lady named
- 2:37Jen that lives in San Francisco. She's in a tech
- 2:40company. She's got two kids. She wears specific
- 2:42types of jeans. She struggles taking her kids
- 2:45back and forth to school. She goes to yoga sometimes.
- 2:49She doesn't have time to get educated on becoming
- 2:51an active investor, but she understands that.
- 2:54You know, she wants to create generational wealth
- 2:57for her kids. And maybe occasionally she listens
- 3:00to podcasts and like it gets down to like even
- 3:03what kind of jeans this person wears. And when
- 3:06you can kind of dial in that specific avatar
- 3:10at that level. then you can start to find where
- 3:13those people hang out because you know what they
- 3:15do for vacation, what topics they're interested
- 3:18in. So you can go on podcasts that are specific
- 3:21to that avatar and start building a following
- 3:24there. You can go into Facebook groups, find
- 3:26out where moms, you know, hang out and then start
- 3:30talking about creating generational wealth in
- 3:32your business. And that really helps. And one
- 3:36of the things she said is like when we first
- 3:38started dialing into this avatar thing, we were
- 3:41really afraid that like doctors and older gentlemen
- 3:46would not be attracted to our message, but we
- 3:49found quite the opposite. Even though like the
- 3:51majority of the people that invest with us aren't
- 3:54tech moms, the message, the wholesome message
- 3:58of wealth creation that is delivered to that
- 4:01avatar allows it so that people can resonate
- 4:04with the message and be attracted to a specific
- 4:07brand. And she said that when she did that, it
- 4:10took her business to the next level. So you can
- 4:13choose not to do it, but I hear it over and over
- 4:16from numerous guests on the show that this is
- 4:19one of the major keys to dialing in a brand,
- 4:23a marketing strategy. and other things that will
- 4:26attract a specific kind of audience that will
- 4:29resonate with one particular message versus,
- 4:32you know, a variety of kind of wide stream messages.
- 4:35So I highly recommend it. If you can dial in
- 4:39your avatar at a little bit higher level and
- 4:41chase them, that's going to help you quite a
- 4:44bit. And then, but sometimes you kind of stumble
- 4:46into what your avatar is, like knowing that I
- 4:50needed to create an avatar for my own business.
- 4:54I kind of was scared, you know, or kind of was
- 4:59concerned that my show, The Capital Razor Show,
- 5:02which was geared towards active investor would
- 5:04never allow me to tap into the limited partner
- 5:07market because limited partners don't listen
- 5:10to active information about how to become a better
- 5:13active operator. What I ended up finding was
- 5:16that there was an avatar for The Capital Razor
- 5:19Show. It wasn't an LP though. It was a capital
- 5:23raiser. So now I got all these capital raisers
- 5:26from the show that they want to do business and
- 5:28raise capital into something. And they're like
- 5:30lining up to talk about this new bill to rent
- 5:32thing that we're doing because they're having
- 5:34a harder time, you know, partnering with people
- 5:37and finding what value add stuff makes sense
- 5:39with the inflammation, with inflation and you
- 5:42know, the current changes. Inflation that's what
- 5:50I tell you that like I've never heard anybody
- 5:54Explain the avatar thing like you just did Because
- 5:58common well, but it makes so much more sense
- 6:01Because like if I think about like sorry my phone's
- 6:05going off. Um, if I think about really focuses
- 6:09focusing in on like because when I started all
- 6:13this my goal was to help my fellow teachers because
- 6:17When you're a teacher and you have to have that
- 6:20paycheck, you are so less likely to advocate
- 6:23for yourself. And so day in and day out, you
- 6:27have this like impending doom over you. You love
- 6:30your kids. You love your classroom. But there's
- 6:32like this impending doom. It's like this big
- 6:35dark gray cloud over you all the time because
- 6:38you cannot advocate for yourself. And so my goal
- 6:41was to show teachers how they could create some
- 6:44financial wiggle room. So that they could advocate
- 6:47for themselves because when I was teaching there
- 6:50were lots of teachers that saw what was going
- 6:52on with me and some of what some of how just
- 6:57treatment and Write -ups and all of these things
- 7:00and they felt very strongly About what was going
- 7:04on? But because of the tide of the paycheck They
- 7:09weren't willing to stand with me Yeah And so
- 7:13that's, that's my goal. My goal was always to
- 7:15be able to help out teachers, help out first
- 7:17responders, help out people that are in that
- 7:20place where they love what they do. It's a rewarding
- 7:22career, but man, it is paycheck to paycheck.
- 7:27That's kind of a scary concept to think about
- 7:29is like, there's these people that you want to
- 7:31help and there's an avatar that you want to help,
- 7:34but are they going to reciprocate and help you
- 7:38become a better syndicator? like do you want
- 7:42to go shopping for money in a pool where there
- 7:46is no money or do you want to select a pool that
- 7:49is wealthy enough and generational wealth mindseted
- 7:54enough to the point where they can get into the
- 7:57space and participate with you because like I
- 8:01can't go to waiters even though I know that they
- 8:04are, you know, exciting people, but there's probably
- 8:07not going to have any money for them to come
- 8:08in. So like, why am I going to chase those guys?
- 8:12I think you have to go and shop for people in
- 8:15a different pool, right? So our kind of avatar
- 8:18right now is like this. I forget what his name
- 8:22was, but he's in San Diego. He's also a tech
- 8:25guy. He's got a few kids. he goes skiing a couple
- 8:29days a year and he's just got the golden handcuffs
- 8:32right so he's got money but he doesn't have time
- 8:35freedom and he wants to spend time with his kids
- 8:38right he's very family oriented and family focused
- 8:41and wants to spend the majority of his time you
- 8:44know that's not spent working with his family
- 8:47so that means that he doesn't have enough time
- 8:49to invest actively in real estate and they may
- 8:53or may not know that you know passive investing
- 8:57syndications exist so it's our job to have the
- 9:00moral imperative to share our message of private
- 9:03placements and multifamily syndications and creating
- 9:06general generational wealth via passive syndicating
- 9:12to this kind of audience and we know that they
- 9:15have money but That's part of the selection of
- 9:19the avatars. You want to find an avatar that
- 9:22can at least invest with you, that's not going
- 9:24to be tied to a paycheck, that's going to be
- 9:26unable to be focused on creating generational
- 9:29wealth because they're so busy being stuck in
- 9:31the rat race that they can't figure out a way
- 9:33to get out. And they might like the idea of passive
- 9:37investing, but they still have no way to get
- 9:39involved. So it's kind of a tough situation,
- 9:41right? Because you want to help these people.
- 9:43but sometimes it's really an uphill battle if
- 9:47you pick the wrong person to help. Hey guys,
- 9:52it's Angel. In case you didn't know, I put on
- 9:55a three -day virtual summit twice a year. It's
- 9:58the Real Estate Investing Rocks Summit, and I've
- 10:00been hosting it since March of 2020. The next
- 10:03one, number 11, is March 25th, 26th, and 27th.
- 10:07Three full days, no cost to you. My friend Sandy
- 10:11is speaking, and she's supported me at every
- 10:13single summit since I started. Joe Fairless,
- 10:16Kathy Fedke, a Tony Award winner, another friend
- 10:20who's raised literal millions from people met
- 10:22on LinkedIn, and the list goes on. You have to
- 10:26join our Mighty Networks community to gain access,
- 10:28and that link, it's in the show notes. Well,
- 10:35thank you for shutting down my dreams. You can
- 10:39still create generational wealth and come back
- 10:42and help them in different ways. No, absolutely.
- 10:47That was kind of like the drive, though. It was
- 10:50the drive behind how we got started and why we
- 10:52got started. And it was really the teacher heart
- 10:55that I have that created the summit and the podcast
- 10:58and all of that stuff, because I like sharing
- 11:00information and I like helping people. It's fun.
- 11:03It is, I'm with you. It's a lot of fun. Um, so
- 11:07I guess I need to actually sit down more and
- 11:09really think about the avatar piece because.
- 11:12And the branding, right? So like, how do you
- 11:14stand out in this world of syndicators? Right?
- 11:17I mentioned earlier that you've been networking
- 11:19and you've met a bunch of these guys. How are
- 11:21you going to stand out? Right? So one of the
- 11:24things that we talk about is like. What kind
- 11:27of a brand are you building? Is it an inviting
- 11:29brand? What kind of a feeling? When you go to
- 11:31the website, is it dark colors? Is it bright
- 11:33colors? Is it stuff about buildings? Or is it
- 11:37stuff about spending time with your family and
- 11:40having images of time freedom and beaches? Or
- 11:43is it like, you know, a bunch of high story buildings
- 11:47that, you know, calls for a different audience?
- 11:50And is it an emotional based website or is a
- 11:53logic based? And same thing with your presentations,
- 11:56right? Are you talking about your team? Are you
- 11:59talking about the deal, the market, the hypotheticals,
- 12:03or are you actually kind of gearing this towards
- 12:06an emotional response that you're attracted to
- 12:09get from the audience? Because a lot of people
- 12:11that understand generational wealth, they They
- 12:14like investing in multifamily, but they don't
- 12:17invest in multifamily because they love buildings.
- 12:20They invest in multifamily because they're looking
- 12:23to solve some kind of emotional need, whether
- 12:25that's like putting their child through college
- 12:28or getting to the point where they can quit their.
- 12:31business and then spend time on the beach or
- 12:34take care of their family that's getting older
- 12:35or spend time with their family or travel or
- 12:38all of these things. They're emotional things.
- 12:40And when you can tap into that rather than just
- 12:43like shoving down a bunch of hypotheticals and
- 12:46informations and market analysis and me, me,
- 12:48me, look at me. I'm the hero. You should follow
- 12:50me into the promised land. Like there's this
- 12:54thing called story brand is booked by Donald
- 12:57Miller where he kind of takes a hero. and kind
- 13:02of gives them guides them through this whole
- 13:04journey it's very much like a a movie like star
- 13:08wars where you know if you're the syndicator
- 13:11you're not the hero you're kind of like the obi
- 13:14-wan Kenobi right so luke skywalker is the hero
- 13:19you're obi -wan and then Luke Skywalker's got
- 13:23all these dilemmas, right? Which is like, he
- 13:25doesn't know how to create generational wealth.
- 13:27He's got tax issues. He's got some other problems.
- 13:30So Obi -Wan guides Luke to kind of look at his
- 13:33tax situation and challenges him to face philosophical,
- 13:37moral and ethical dilemmas. Like, who are you
- 13:40going to invest with? How are you going to be
- 13:41able to help? Are you actually making an impact
- 13:44in the community? And then, you know, they together
- 13:47face the forces of evil, which is lack of creating
- 13:51of generational wealth and tax issues. And then
- 13:54we kind of fight them together. And at the end
- 13:56of the day, Luke is the hero. It's never Obi
- 13:59-Wan who's the hero, right? So us as syndicators,
- 14:02we're just the guide and the limited partner
- 14:05who's creating generational wealth for his family.
- 14:08That's the hero. And we can kind of brand ourselves
- 14:11in such a way where we're just the guides and
- 14:13we're helping people face all of the challenges
- 14:16that they have to get to. in order to create
- 14:19a successful passive income investment, right?
- 14:21So they get to the finish line, they invest $50
- 14:24,000. And then after three years, it turns into
- 14:2775 or $80 ,000. And they can do it all over again.
- 14:30And they feel more comfortable to be able to
- 14:33defeat these evil forces that exist. And this
- 14:35whole story brand is a very exciting kind of
- 14:38theme that I like to talk about on the show occasionally,
- 14:40too. Yeah, when I grabbed the book, I was showing
- 14:42off. Awesome. There's it's really funny. First
- 14:49off, we've got like three or four hundred books
- 14:50and different stacks all over the place. I'm
- 14:53with you. I'm like that. Yeah. So like I try
- 14:55and like when I hear people talk about books,
- 14:57I try and grab books. I'm showing what they are.
- 15:00I show the audience what they are. But it's it's
- 15:03it's different to read it and to do it. It is
- 15:08because like when I heard the people that I'm
- 15:10helping, those are the heroes. I can get that
- 15:13up here. But when it's going on, I think all
- 15:17of us want to be heroes. And it's hard to flip
- 15:21the switch so that it's not me being a hero,
- 15:24helping you. It's me guiding you to your own
- 15:29hero story so that you get to be the hero of
- 15:33your outcomes. If you're a limited partner, that's
- 15:36what you want. You want to be the hero too. Yeah.
- 15:40And that is a tricky nuance. Yeah. They require
- 15:45sophisticated selling. And, you know, like, even
- 15:48when you're selling, all you're doing is you're
- 15:50making friends and you're trying to make them
- 15:52the hero, I think, because if it's all about
- 15:54you and your deal, you know, people just go off
- 15:57and find somebody else that can tap into their
- 15:59emotional requirements that they need in order
- 16:02to satisfy their internal problems. Right. Yeah.
- 16:06No, it's, um, it's not just relationships either.
- 16:11Cause For some people like creating relationships
- 16:14is relatively easy. You know, I talk to everybody
- 16:18and for me, developing a relationship is not
- 16:23hard, but taking that relationship from more
- 16:28than a handshake to they're going to write me
- 16:30a six figure check. That's a different ballgame.
- 16:35It's a little scary. It is. And I don't think
- 16:41I have a system. that reliably gets me from one
- 16:44place to the next.
