Transcript
- 0:14welcome to the One Oahu podcast.
- 0:16I'm your host, Brandi Higa.
- 0:17And this week we're joined by Dereck
- 0:19Kaneshiro donor recruitment account manager for the Blood Bank of Hawaii.
- 0:23Is that? Is that title correct?
- 0:24Yes, that is correct. Dereck, thanks for making some time for me.
- 0:27Oh you're welcome.
- 0:28Thanks for having me.
- 0:29So first off, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 0:32Are you from or who or did you grow up where.
- 0:33Where'd you go to school and how did you get into this type of work?
- 0:36Actually, I grew up on the island of Kauai, and
- 0:40I got into this sort of by, I guess, accident, you could say.
- 0:45So I moved here during the pandemic.
- 0:48Oh, wow. Okay.
- 0:48So, you know, when everything was still closed, right?
- 0:53So I was looking for work and my prior life
- 0:58was in agriculture, but I've been donating blood for
- 1:03almost 15 years now.
- 1:05And like they always do when they go back to Kauai,
- 1:09they call you, hey, can you donate at the next blood drive?
- 1:12We're coming back.
- 1:14I said, I'm sorry. I'm not there anymore.
- 1:16I moved and updated my address
- 1:20and they're like, oh, you live by Young Street.
- 1:23So I was like, oh, okay, I can I can come donate.
- 1:26So I went to donate and I was like, oh, what what am I working here?
- 1:31So I started working there and then I just stayed
- 1:36because I like working there. So.
- 1:39So what prepared you for this role?
- 1:40Because it's almost like you need to be you have to have a little bit of,
- 1:43you know, medical background.
- 1:45You have to be a little bit of like an HR person.
- 1:47You have to have like this customer service, like front facing,
- 1:49like agriculture to like very, very different.
- 1:54Right? Yeah.
- 1:55So, you could say,
- 1:59well, I started
- 2:02in the call center. Okay.
- 2:04So I used to work in a call center many years ago.
- 2:09So I kind of had that background.
- 2:12So I kind of knew how to talk on the phone.
- 2:15So I got started like that.
- 2:20I guess customer service comes naturally.
- 2:22I would like to think, anyway.
- 2:25And then it just kind of grew from there.
- 2:27And because
- 2:29I knew because I was a blood donor.
- 2:32Oh, yeah, I know the process. You know the process.
- 2:34It was easy for me to get people to come through, come and donate.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:39And, you know,
- 2:39we got linked up because similarly, I, I've been a blood donor for a long time.
- 2:43It was close to being a center donor.
- 2:45We linked up
- 2:46because I'm the site coordinator for the city's employee blood drives.
- 2:49But how many of these blood drives you personally?
- 2:52Like, what are you responsible for each week?
- 2:55So each week,
- 2:58I would say I have about five blood drives.
- 3:01Average. Okay.
- 3:02It can vary depending on the week.
- 3:05Like this week, for example, you guys had a blood drive.
- 3:09I was there for a little bit.
- 3:11I had to run off to another blood drive that day.
- 3:14I had three that's unusual for me to have and all over the other two.
- 3:20Yeah, I had one downtown.
- 3:21I had the one here and North Shore and I was at BYU.
- 3:24Yeah, that's where I was on Wednesday. Yeah.
- 3:27And can you talk about like what is the need right now?
- 3:31I know fall is here.
- 3:32Everyone's kind of going back to school, back
- 3:33to work, getting back to their schedules.
- 3:35What does the need look like during this particular time of year?
- 3:39So we're coming right out of the summer.
- 3:41So summer is usually
- 3:44our tough time because, you know, school is out.
- 3:48But coming out of this summer, we get better because
- 3:51high school starts, blood drives, starts at high schools, colleges.
- 3:55So we're just starting, but we're still not where
- 3:59we would like to be yet, so we still need people to come and donate.
- 4:03And like, you know, it's an ongoing thing.
- 4:06Yeah.
- 4:07You know, you mentioned you're from County, and we were actually
- 4:11some of the, I guess, dem mayor's office parks.
- 4:15A lot of staff from a little county
- 4:17actually got flown over to Coyote County to help after the hurricane.
- 4:20And when we see these natural disasters, even tropical storms, like,
- 4:23we just experience.
- 4:25So does that change the need? It all?
- 4:26Does that change your operations at all?
- 4:28It does. So
- 4:30with storms
- 4:31coming through, a lot of times you'll see people
- 4:35not come out to donate because it might not be safe for them
- 4:39or whatever reason, or a blood drive might get canceled because,
- 4:43you know, depending on where it is,
- 4:45it might not be safe because they're getting a lot of bad weather.
- 4:49So it can affect us like that.
- 4:52And so how can donors help right now?
- 4:54Like what are what are ways that they can they can give they can help the best way
- 4:57they can.
- 4:58The best way they can help is by, just donating like regularly
- 5:03scheduling it ahead of time.
- 5:07It's the blood that we have
- 5:09on supply, like, right now that helps save lives
- 5:13because if we were to donate blood today,
- 5:18there's
- 5:18testing that need to go through the lab so it's not ready
- 5:22to be used for another two days.
- 5:25So you want to prepare for it?
- 5:28Like, say, if a storm is coming, you want to, get ready before the storm?
- 5:33Yeah, you could say.
- 5:34I'd like you just mentioned when you go to all these drives across the island,
- 5:38the blood that's collected there, like you said, sometimes it takes a few days.
- 5:40So, you know, the city employees blood drive,
- 5:43HFD, HPD even has their own these day of events.
- 5:47How does that help the blood bank and the need right now
- 5:49that helps us ahead of time.
- 5:51So let's say if the holidays are coming.
- 5:55Yeah.
- 5:55An example is Memorial Day, you know, going into the summer.
- 6:00So it's one of the holidays that has more accidents
- 6:05because people go, oh yeah, yeah, it started summer.
- 6:09So we like to get people to donate before the holiday weekend because in case
- 6:14something happens that at least the blood is there, you know.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:19And so when you say things like, you know, yeah, crashes
- 6:21tend to happen on those three day weekend drop party graduation season.
- 6:24But what else is this blood used for?
- 6:26Because I know there's folks that go under a regular.
- 6:29So procedures.
- 6:30And yeah I mean the need is daily.
- 6:32So like regular procedures like general surgeries,
- 6:37transplants like say childbirth like.
- 6:42Yeah.
- 6:42But babies, premature, cancer treatments.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:49There's this daily needs the ones you see on TV
- 6:52that's like a smaller portion of the pie.
- 6:56Yeah.
- 6:57And so who can donate?
- 6:58Because you know very well a lot of people will say things like, oh,
- 7:01I can't donate it because I traveled recently, or I have tattoos.
- 7:05Yeah.
- 7:05So, to those specific questions, if you traveled
- 7:11now, it used to be a longer wait.
- 7:13Now it's three months.
- 7:15If you
- 7:16went to certain certain country, it's not every country, but certain countries,
- 7:20tattoos or piercings.
- 7:23If you got a tattoo
- 7:24or piercing from, professional, like a licensed shop, then you're fine.
- 7:28Now, before you would have to wait months or even years.
- 7:33Yeah, depending how far back you know.
- 7:35And so what's your message to folks who may be interested in donating?
- 7:39But I've never done so before.
- 7:41If you've never done it before, I would say
- 7:44try it at least once.
- 7:47If you are a donor, I would say bring someone
- 7:51you know who's never done it before, because a lot of the people
- 7:55who I talk to who've done it for the first time, they were just afraid.
- 7:59Yeah.
- 8:00And you, you're afraid of what?
- 8:04You don't know.
- 8:05You don't know what to expect, right?
- 8:07So bring somebody who's never done it before.
- 8:10They're going to feel a lot more comfortable.
- 8:11You can walk them through it and help them have a great experience.
- 8:18And it's for a lot of people it's the needle right.
- 8:21So yeah, you know you know they're asked like you know, does it hurt?
- 8:25Well I feel like after we'll have a scar.
- 8:28I mean,
- 8:30it's a needle.
- 8:30You're going to feel something, you know, going in your arm, but,
- 8:33it shouldn't be.
- 8:36You're not going to be sitting there in pain for like, five, ten minutes.
- 8:39You know, I've been doing this for.
- 8:44I've been with the blood bank a little bit over five years now.
- 8:47I have only met one person that said, oh, I like needles.
- 8:51That's why I donate blood. I actually don't mind it either.
- 8:53That's why.
- 8:53I mean, most of us, you know, we don't mind.
- 8:58The one said, oh, I like needles.
- 9:00Everybody else is like they don't mind or they don't like.
- 9:04So yeah, most of us
- 9:06either are neutral or we don't like needles.
- 9:09Yeah.
- 9:10And in this line of work, have you met some of the blood recipients
- 9:15like there is, is there a story that stuck with you that you know,
- 9:18when you go to bed at night, you're like, this is why I do this.
- 9:21Off the top of my head, okay.
- 9:25So when I got started,
- 9:27going back.
- 9:29So one of my coworkers, found out she had cancer,
- 9:33and then she's fine now,
- 9:36but our workplace, some of our coworkers,
- 9:39we all got together, we started donating blood.
- 9:42And that's how I got started, so.
- 9:45And for me, I continue doing that because you never know.
- 9:50Like, I might need that blood one day
- 9:53or someone like my family or my friends,
- 9:56so I would rather donate now.
- 10:00So when something happens, I'll know
- 10:04I did what I could do to make sure it's there for whoever needs it.
- 10:08That's what I do.
- 10:10How many times have you done it? Oh.
- 10:12I looked it up a few months ago.
- 10:14Yeah.
- 10:16Over 50, over 50.
- 10:18Okay. You're in over 50 clubs? Yeah.
- 10:21And so what are some ways that people can help
- 10:23if they're unable to donate blood?
- 10:26That's another great question.
- 10:28So I work with people that set up blood drives like yourself,
- 10:34but they cannot donate blood, which is the interesting thing.
- 10:39But what you can do
- 10:40if you can't donate is you can get other people to donate blood.
- 10:44And if you're really good at that, you can start your own blood drive too.
- 10:49You know,
- 10:50if you're good at getting like ten, 20, 30, 40 people
- 10:53to come to a blood drive, maybe you should have your own blood drive, you know?
- 10:56But getting the word out,
- 10:58educating the need and getting people to come out to donate
- 11:03and working those listening.
- 11:05Learn more about blood donation and maybe possibly finding a drive near them.
- 11:08Or like you said, even if they're curious about starting their own blood.
- 11:11Drive mobile site.
- 11:15Have the blood, you know, blood mobile come to them.
- 11:17How can they find more information?
- 11:18They can go to our website bbh.org.
- 11:21And last question from me there.
- 11:24But So the job that you do now, you know, like you said, if you're good
- 11:27at getting people to donate blood.
- 11:29But I know there's some,
- 11:30especially in the summertime, there's drives where it's just really hard
- 11:33that I call to action. It just isn't working.
- 11:35It's like, you know, we know we need blood,
- 11:36but it's hard to get folks to donate.
- 11:38And then there's a serious aspect
- 11:40if we don't get the blood we need, there is there's a risk to the public.
- 11:43Yeah. And so for you personally, how do you how do you find balance?
- 11:46How do you, you know, do you you saying you you you have a glass of wine.
- 11:50Sometimes it's a puppy.
- 11:51What do you. Yeah, I have a little puppy at home.
- 11:53He keeps me company.
- 11:55You know, he keeps me sane.
- 12:00Yeah.
- 12:01Right now it's just me and the dog.
- 12:03Yeah, Well, Derek, is there anything that we missed?
- 12:06Let me see.
- 12:10Not that I can think of off the top of my head.
- 12:12Just that the need for blood is daily, like.
- 12:18I mean, the hospital is open daily.
- 12:20There's people in the hospital daily, so the need is daily.
- 12:23And if people, I think the average person donates like, 2 or 3 times a year,
- 12:28you know, if you could donate like one time or more than that,
- 12:33you know, imagine how much better off we would be with the blood supply.
- 12:38And this is a great way to help out the community, too.
- 12:42If you're not able to
- 12:44help people in need, like financially, you know, we all have blood, right?
- 12:49If you're eligible to donate,
- 12:51try it once and then, who knows,
- 12:55you might end up donating ten, 20, 30 years.
- 13:00Even if you do it once a year.
- 13:02That's, you know, so many more blood donations we would have had or even,
- 13:07you know, bring a friend every now and then who hasn't done it before.
- 13:12They end up donating
- 13:14for how many years, however many times per year, you know,
- 13:17that's that many more blood donations we got.
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:24Well, Derek, thank you for your time.
- 13:25Thanks, Brandy.
- 13:26And next week, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
- 13:29Believe it or not, lights will be going up and preparations made here at Honolulu
- 13:34Hall as we get ready to deck the halls ahead of this year's Honolulu City Lights.
- 13:39We'll sit down with the City Lights coordinators on what to expect this year
- 13:43here on the civic grounds.
- 13:45That's next week right here on the One Oahu Podcast.
- 13:47Mahalo for listening. And until next time. Aloha.
