Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person thing, Michelle. I guess back again,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and you're still here. Even after that last episode where
- 0:09Speaker 1: we learned all those really shitty, horrible things, you came back.
- 0:13Speaker 1: High five. Let's do it one, two, three, high five.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Sorry gigs, that just freaked out my cat. She doesn't
- 0:21Speaker 1: like snapping and clapping and stuff for some reason. So yeah,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about banana fish because that's what we're
- 0:29Speaker 1: talking about, right And just an update. Last week, I
- 0:34Speaker 1: said that I was going to get a tattoo, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: I was not kidding. I've scheduled an appointment. By the
- 0:39Speaker 1: time you hear this episode, I will probably already have
- 0:42Speaker 1: the tattoo and it's gonna be big and embarrassing, is all. Fuck.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So yeah, I just wanted to tell you for some reason.
- 0:53Speaker 1: But let's get to Let's get to work on episode
- 0:58Speaker 1: six of Bananafis, which is called My Lost City. That
- 1:03Speaker 1: is also the title of a collection of personal essays
- 1:05Speaker 1: by f Scott FitzGeralds, but probably doesn't mean any more
- 1:09Speaker 1: than that. But it's also just a really good title
- 1:12Speaker 1: for this episode, considering we are going back to Ash's hometown.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So yeah, good job. Whoever the hell came up with
- 1:21Speaker 1: this as the episode title, So let's get into it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm totally gonna be able to do this, and I'm
- 1:29Speaker 1: not gonna have to stop like ten times to stop
- 1:32Speaker 1: like laughing in like anxiety. Let's do it. So at
- 1:36Speaker 1: the start of the episode, we see a pickup truck
- 1:39Speaker 1: traveling down like a road, and the pickup truck has
- 1:45Speaker 1: like a it's got like something covering the back of it,
- 1:48Speaker 1: like the the flatbed part, like a fabricy like thing
- 1:57Speaker 1: that's tall, like a it's like an enclosed space back there.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I don't know what that's called at all. So Max
- 2:05Speaker 1: is singing, Oh my Darling Clementine as he drives and
- 2:09Speaker 1: Ashes in the passenger seat and Ash says, shut up,
- 2:13Speaker 1: why do you keep singing that same phrase? And Max
- 2:17Speaker 1: says sorry, I don't know the rest, and Ash's like
- 2:21Speaker 1: and he looks out the window. Max says, a bit cranky,
- 2:24Speaker 1: are we? When was the last time you came home?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Ash is just totally silent, and Max says, senior palal,
- 2:31Speaker 1: like that reminds me that you're just a kid. And
- 2:34Speaker 1: Ash's like, what did you say? And Max is just like,
- 2:37Speaker 1: which way next? And Ash says to the right, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: then Max starts to sing again and Ash's like, shut up,
- 2:43Speaker 1: damn it. Next we see that they have stopped. Ash
- 2:48Speaker 1: opens the fabric covered back compartment area of the truck
- 2:52Speaker 1: bed place and says, get up. And we see that Shunichi, Shorter,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and Age are all asleep inside, which is so bullshit.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I have this thing where, when I'm in a car,
- 3:07Speaker 1: like I don't sleep because I want to be awake
- 3:10Speaker 1: with the driver in case something happens. Not that I
- 3:13Speaker 1: could help at all, but I feel like being a
- 3:15Speaker 1: good citizen of the car means staying awake. So not
- 3:20Speaker 1: too happy to see them all sleeping. But Ag did
- 3:24Speaker 1: pass out just yesterday and and Shorter got like kind
- 3:28Speaker 1: of grazed in the head by some bullets, so maybe
- 3:31Speaker 1: they deserve to sleep a little, so I'm gonna give
- 3:34Speaker 1: them a pass. So anyway, Ash says, I said, get up,
- 3:38Speaker 1: wake your lazy asses up. AG turns over and Shorter
- 3:42Speaker 1: yawns and says my lazy ass hurts, and Ash says,
- 3:46Speaker 1: we're here, get out of the truck. Then we cut
- 3:48Speaker 1: to scenic Cape cod They're like on a cliff or something,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and they're overlooking like houses and the ocean and the
- 3:55Speaker 1: sky is like a deep blue. It's very nice. Ag says,
- 4:00Speaker 1: what a nice place, and she need she's like taking
- 4:03Speaker 1: pictures of everything, and Shorterer says, it's hard to believe
- 4:06Speaker 1: it's just three hundred miles from New York. Agy looks
- 4:09Speaker 1: over and sees that Ash is standing by the truck,
- 4:12Speaker 1: like not engaging in this sight, seeing what they're all doing.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And he's looking down, and I mean he's literally looking down,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and he emotionally looks like he is down as well.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And then we get to the opening theme. Yes, back
- 4:25Speaker 1: from the opening, we see the exterior of a wood
- 4:29Speaker 1: sided house with a sign that says Green Hill Diner
- 4:32Speaker 1: on it, and also it has a purple roof. For
- 4:35Speaker 1: some reason, I wrote that it looks quaint. Yeah it does. Inside,
- 4:39Speaker 1: a brown haired woman is like behind a bar, like
- 4:43Speaker 1: maybe cleaning stuff or counting money. I don't really know
- 4:46Speaker 1: what she's doing. And the door opens and it's Ash, obviously.
- 4:50Speaker 1: The woman stares at him and then her eyes widen
- 4:53Speaker 1: and she says you, and Ash says, how have you been, Jennifer? Jennifer.
- 5:00Speaker 1: He puts her hands over her mouth and she says,
- 5:03Speaker 1: oslon Ash. She turns towards the door and calls into
- 5:08Speaker 1: another room, Jim, hurry, come over here. Then we see
- 5:12Speaker 1: this Jim character from the doorway. He is kind of
- 5:16Speaker 1: a heavier set, older dude, and he has like a
- 5:20Speaker 1: grayish full beard, and he says, what are you screaming about?
- 5:24Speaker 1: He looks over then and sees Ash and the crew.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Ash is a little bit forward and the rest of
- 5:30Speaker 1: the gang is in the doorway, and Nash just says, hey,
- 5:34Speaker 1: Jim looks pretty damn surprised and says, and this is important.
- 5:40Speaker 1: What makes you think you can come back here? You
- 5:42Speaker 1: horror what Ash is, however, completely unfazed by this, and
- 5:50Speaker 1: he just says, give me the keys to the other
- 5:52Speaker 1: house and I'll leave. I'm just here for griff stuff.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And I was like over here watching this, going like
- 6:00Speaker 1: what expression is on his face? Because it's so muted,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and I think it's just him trying to somehow keep
- 6:09Speaker 1: it together. Basically, it's very very flat, though, considering his
- 6:16Speaker 1: father just called him a whore, which seems very unprompted
- 6:21Speaker 1: and also is not something you normally say to your son. Anyway,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Jim like huffs and he's like, and who are you guys?
- 6:29Speaker 1: The rest of the crew looks stressed, and Max is
- 6:34Speaker 1: like us, we're just and Ash says friends. Jim says friends, huh,
- 6:41Speaker 1: so what you seduced them? What? And Max is also
- 6:46Speaker 1: like what's that supposed to mean? Yeah, I don't know Max.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Ash turns to Max and says, drop it, old man,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and then to Jim he says, just give me the keys.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Jim reaches into his pocket and puts the keys on
- 7:00Speaker 1: the counter and he's like, get out as soon as
- 7:02Speaker 1: you're done. He starts to walk off. Max is not done,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and he says, hey you. Jim turns back and Max says,
- 7:11Speaker 1: what's with all the shit? Is that how you talk
- 7:13Speaker 1: to your son? Yeah, you fucking tell him? Max and
- 7:17Speaker 1: Shunci to Max is like hey, Jim looks at Ash
- 7:21Speaker 1: and says, who is that your boyfriend? Look, I don't
- 7:24Speaker 1: care if you sleep with my son, just make sure
- 7:26Speaker 1: you pay him. And Max is like what did you say?
- 7:29Speaker 1: And he lunges, but Schunici holds him back and he's like,
- 7:33Speaker 1: take that back. And Schounichi, who is really fighting to
- 7:38Speaker 1: hold on to Max so that he doesn't attack Jim,
- 7:41Speaker 1: is like stop and Max continues, how can you insult
- 7:45Speaker 1: your own kid like that, and Schoonici says Max, and Ash, calmly,
- 7:50Speaker 1: still not even slightly reacting, says, forget it, old man,
- 7:55Speaker 1: that's just how he is. Let's go. And he walks
- 7:59Speaker 1: past them and towards the exit, and he stops and
- 8:02Speaker 1: he says, just one thing, griffin'stead, not that you care.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Jim is standing with his back to them, and he
- 8:10Speaker 1: doesn't move, and Ash continues to walk out, and Jennifer says, wait, Ash,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and we hear the door shut. Jennifer turns to Jim
- 8:20Speaker 1: and says, why did you say that? And Jim's like,
- 8:23Speaker 1: shut up, it's none of your business. Then we go
- 8:27Speaker 1: to a small, slightly beat up Cape cod style house
- 8:31Speaker 1: with some vines growing on it and stuff like maybe
- 8:34Speaker 1: nobody lives there, and Ash says, this is where Griff
- 8:38Speaker 1: and I were born. He and I have different mothers.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He's walking up the steps. My mom kicked his out,
- 8:44Speaker 1: but then that slut ran off with a different guy
- 8:45Speaker 1: as soon as I was born, Geese dude. We cut
- 8:49Speaker 1: to Ag and Shorter, looking impressed by how bad all
- 8:52Speaker 1: of this is. Ash continues, then, my dad started living
- 8:56Speaker 1: with Jennifer over at the diner. So Graeff and I
- 8:57Speaker 1: were left here alone. And then Jennifer say, Ash, and
- 9:02Speaker 1: we see her. She's carrying supplies. She says, the power's
- 9:05Speaker 1: off over here, and I brought some food too, and
- 9:07Speaker 1: we see that like she's brought a lantern as well.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Ash takes the stuff from her and says, thanks, I
- 9:12Speaker 1: really appreciate it. Jennifer's like, hey, about Jim. He's actually
- 9:18Speaker 1: really happy you're home, really guys, and Ash says, you're
- 9:23Speaker 1: so nice. I don't get why you'd stay with him,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and Jennifer is like, please don't say that, and As
- 9:30Speaker 1: just like, yeah, sorry. Jennifer starts to leave, and then
- 9:34Speaker 1: she says, come to the diner in the morning. I'll
- 9:37Speaker 1: have breakfast ready. Ash waves her off and she leaves completely,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and Ash notices that Max's kind of just standing leaning
- 9:44Speaker 1: against the house, kind of looking down, and he says,
- 9:48Speaker 1: why are you so sad? And he's smiling, by the way,
- 9:52Speaker 1: You're the one who brought me here. Stop acting like
- 9:54Speaker 1: he didn't want to see all that, and he heads inside.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Fuck but he kind of deserves it, and Max says sorry.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Ag goes in last, and he's looking around and I
- 10:07Speaker 1: think sho Nichi says, nice house, and it is pretty nice.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It's a little bit sparse, but nobody lives there, so
- 10:13Speaker 1: that makes sense. Ash says, Ag gets some candles out
- 10:17Speaker 1: of the door behind you, and he he's like sure,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and he pulls open a drawer and a very cute
- 10:22Speaker 1: mouse jumps out at him, and Agy jumps and screams
- 10:25Speaker 1: and latches onto Shorter and Short of like is pulling
- 10:28Speaker 1: him off and is like it's just a rat. Damn it,
- 10:30Speaker 1: don't scare me like that, and he's like sorry. Shounichi
- 10:34Speaker 1: is now looking through the drawer and he's like, oh,
- 10:35Speaker 1: here's a bunch of letters, and Ash is like, the
- 10:38Speaker 1: only person who were letters here was Griff and Max
- 10:40Speaker 1: is like, is there anything else of his? And Ash,
- 10:43Speaker 1: who was kind of blankly staring at the ground, says,
- 10:47Speaker 1: probably in his room next week. Cut to probably his room,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and everybody's there and they're looking through things, except for Ash,
- 10:55Speaker 1: who was just kind of looking at this picture of
- 10:58Speaker 1: him as a kid, I guess, smiling next to Griffin,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and they're wearing like baseball uniforms. Unfortunately, but we'll get
- 11:05Speaker 1: to that in a couple of minutes. But he looks
- 11:08Speaker 1: not happy, obviously, his brother died, so he's just kind
- 11:12Speaker 1: of like waxing nostalgic on this. I don't know if
- 11:15Speaker 1: that's really something a person says, but I said it.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Plus like this has been kind of a weird day
- 11:21Speaker 1: for him, so he's probably not in a great mood.
- 11:23Speaker 1: AG all of a sudden gets excited and he's like, look,
- 11:27Speaker 1: and he's found a picture of I guess Griff's unit
- 11:30Speaker 1: in the army with all the people in it and stuff,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and red haired glasses guy is there, and Shorter's like,
- 11:37Speaker 1: that's him, and Max is like found something, and AG
- 11:40Speaker 1: shows Max and he's like, that's the guy who killed
- 11:43Speaker 1: Ash's brother, and Max says, are you positive? And Short's
- 11:48Speaker 1: like yeah. Max says, this is the unit Griff was
- 11:51Speaker 1: in before we met. Where's the list of names? And
- 11:54Speaker 1: this whole time Ash is still just staring at that picture.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He finally puts it back on the show and kind
- 12:00Speaker 1: of goes over to the rest of them and Max says,
- 12:04Speaker 1: here it is Abraham Dawson. He lives in La one
- 12:08Speaker 1: o two forty two Westwood, and we have a quick
- 12:11Speaker 1: flashed episode one and Max says, that's the address. Stephen
- 12:15Speaker 1: Thompson said before he died, and Ash says, yeah, he's
- 12:19Speaker 1: looking at his phone. There's nothing about him on the net.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Max says, I guess we'll have to go there and
- 12:24Speaker 1: find out. Plus Golsing doesn't have a lot of influence
- 12:27Speaker 1: out there. Shortter's like, la, huh, damn, that's far. Ag
- 12:32Speaker 1: looks too Shinichi, and Shinichi says, don't look at me
- 12:36Speaker 1: like that. I won't back out now. It's too risky
- 12:39Speaker 1: to go back to Manhattan anyway. Max is like, I
- 12:42Speaker 1: wish we get head there tomorrow, but the truck needs
- 12:44Speaker 1: fixing and you guys all need rest. I'm sure Golsan
- 12:47Speaker 1: won't find us here that quickly. Mash is not pleased
- 12:50Speaker 1: and he's like, I want to leave now. I want
- 12:52Speaker 1: to pin that man down in corner old dino. Max
- 12:55Speaker 1: is like, come on, some of us here are old.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You know you're thirty three. Your shoulder hasn't healed either,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and as she's like, this is why I hate old guys.
- 13:03Speaker 1: If you can't keep up, don't come and he starts
- 13:05Speaker 1: to walk to the door and Max is like, hey,
- 13:08Speaker 1: where are you going, and Ash says, to get blankets
- 13:10Speaker 1: from the truck. You two old geezers can just lie
- 13:12Speaker 1: in bed. Shunichi and Max sigh, and Asha says, Ag
- 13:16Speaker 1: come help, and he's like okay and follows him off,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and Max is like old geezers, huh that little punk.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Snichi says, do you think Golzan's metill come here? And
- 13:27Speaker 1: Max says, if they do, we're screwed. Outside it is
- 13:32Speaker 1: super fucking gorgeous. It's late day kind of sunset. Everything
- 13:37Speaker 1: is yellow and orange, and there's a really nice breeze,
- 13:41Speaker 1: probably coming off the ocean. I think that's how it goes.
- 13:46Speaker 1: The breeze comes off the ocean at night and in
- 13:48Speaker 1: the day. I don't remember. It doesn't matter. So we're
- 13:51Speaker 1: looking at Ash and Ag, and Ag says this is
- 13:54Speaker 1: a nice place, and Ash is just like, there's nothing here,
- 13:59Speaker 1: it's all He's so windy. It is too. I check
- 14:02Speaker 1: to see if cape Cod is really very windy all
- 14:04Speaker 1: the time, and it is. Apparently it's called cape Cod
- 14:06Speaker 1: air conditioning. Hey, Age continues, do you hate it here?
- 14:12Speaker 1: Ash is silent for a second, and then he says,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I don't have any feelings about it. You kind of
- 14:18Speaker 1: just fade out. Next we see Shunichi sleeping in bed
- 14:22Speaker 1: and Age in Short are sleeping on a blanket on
- 14:24Speaker 1: the floor, and Shorter is like snoring, and we hear
- 14:28Speaker 1: gunshots in the distance. Ag kind of winces at the
- 14:32Speaker 1: gunshots in his sleep and then he opens his eyes.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Then we go to outside where a bottle of liquor explodes.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Ash is shooting them, obviously, and Age says, oh wow.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Ash looks over and says, did I wake you? And
- 14:46Speaker 1: Agy's like, no, I was just waking up anyway. Ash
- 14:49Speaker 1: at this point is removing the spent shells from his
- 14:52Speaker 1: gun and he's like, I'm rusty I missed the bottle
- 14:55Speaker 1: And he's like, what, but that's so far. I guess
- 14:57Speaker 1: it's far. And we also see that like the direction
- 15:01Speaker 1: that he's shooting in because he's shooting at like bottles
- 15:04Speaker 1: that are kind of on like a board or something.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I don't know, but like right past there are like houses,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and that's probably not a good idea to shoot towards
- 15:13Speaker 1: a house. Now, to be fair, this is an anime mistake.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I think that just someone wasn't thinking when they made
- 15:21Speaker 1: the backgrounds for this shot, Like there wasn't a hey,
- 15:24Speaker 1: that's probably not a good idea because what if he
- 15:26Speaker 1: misses and kills someone. But yeah, little mistake there, but
- 15:30Speaker 1: we'll just pretend that those houses are vacant or something. Anyway,
- 15:34Speaker 1: Ash reloads the gun and he aims again, and AG says,
- 15:37Speaker 1: how's your shoulder? Are you sure you should be doing that?
- 15:40Speaker 1: And ashs like it's just a scratch and he fires.
- 15:44Speaker 1: AG's like, wow, you're tough. Nash says, do you want
- 15:46Speaker 1: to try? Ag is surprised, and Ash is like, you
- 15:52Speaker 1: can shoot if you want, and she's like for real.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Then we cut to a very awkward looking and standing
- 15:58Speaker 1: Agle holding the gun and kind of shaking and I
- 16:02Speaker 1: She's like, come on, what kind of stance is that?
- 16:04Speaker 1: And he puts his arm around Agy's shoulder and he's like,
- 16:08Speaker 1: hold the grip tighter, and he adjusts AG's hands and
- 16:12Speaker 1: he continues, it's loaded with magnum cartridges, so if you
- 16:14Speaker 1: don't grip it tightly, you're gonna sprain your wrist. At
- 16:17Speaker 1: this distance, you don't need to worry about wind resistance
- 16:19Speaker 1: or anything. And he lowers the hammer for him and
- 16:22Speaker 1: he says, pull the trigger lightly, aim carefully. Ag looks resolved,
- 16:28Speaker 1: but his hand is still shaking, and he finally pulls
- 16:32Speaker 1: the trigger and he kind of jumps and he misses obviously,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and asked, just like, oh great shot. Ag scowls, and
- 16:42Speaker 1: then we hear Shoonici say hey, and they look over
- 16:46Speaker 1: and Shoonichi is walking up towards them. AG's like, EBAs on,
- 16:50Speaker 1: ask just let me shoot his gun, AND's like, yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I saw breakfast is ready? Go wake up shorter and
- 16:56Speaker 1: Age says okay, and he gives the gun back to
- 16:59Speaker 1: Ash and he walks away, and now Ash and Tunici
- 17:03Speaker 1: are alone, and Ash says, what you don't like me
- 17:05Speaker 1: letting him shoot my gun? Huh? Sheii's like, that's not it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: It's just the two of you are so different in
- 17:13Speaker 1: your backgrounds too. You don't need to tell him that.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Ash says, I guess you have your reasons, but you
- 17:19Speaker 1: treat him too much like a baby. That's why he
- 17:22Speaker 1: still can't protect himself at his age, and he aims
- 17:25Speaker 1: the gun again. Shanici says, hey, in our country, we
- 17:28Speaker 1: don't carry guns to protect ourselves. Ash obliterates a bottle
- 17:31Speaker 1: and says, too bad, this is in Japan. Try telling
- 17:35Speaker 1: that to someone when they have a gun in your face.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And he walks away. Then we cut to the diner.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Outside of the diner and Max is outside and he's
- 17:44Speaker 1: working on the truck and he wipes sweat from his
- 17:46Speaker 1: brow and Shuonici walks up and Max says, looks like
- 17:49Speaker 1: we need a new battery. This baby's not gonna make
- 17:52Speaker 1: it to Los Angeles without one. Shunichi sits on the
- 17:55Speaker 1: porch and says, I see, and Max is like, what's
- 17:58Speaker 1: with a long face? Got scratched by the lynx and
- 18:01Speaker 1: Shei's like, big go. He said, I baby each on
- 18:05Speaker 1: too much. Max says, hmm, age's nineteen right. Ash might
- 18:11Speaker 1: have a point. Why'd you bring him with you anyway?
- 18:14Speaker 1: Shunci says, I had to rescue him. He was actually
- 18:18Speaker 1: a very talented pole vaulter. And we flashed to Agi
- 18:21Speaker 1: jumping over thing, you know, and then we see Ag
- 18:26Speaker 1: Shorter and Ash eating breakfast in the diner, and back
- 18:29Speaker 1: to Shunichi. But he wasn't the same after an injury.
- 18:32Speaker 1: He had gotten a scholarship because of it, and he
- 18:35Speaker 1: kind of began to hold himself back. He's forgotten how
- 18:37Speaker 1: to jump. Max says, like a canary, you can't say huh.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Shunci continues, That's why I brought him here. I wanted
- 18:45Speaker 1: to see him jump again. I do anything to make
- 18:47Speaker 1: that happen. Max says, why. Shoonichi raises his hands to
- 18:53Speaker 1: the sky kind of framing a cloud between them, and
- 18:57Speaker 1: the cloud looks like a bird, by the way, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: he says his picture was the one that gave me
- 19:01Speaker 1: my first break as a photographer, so I guess I'm
- 19:04Speaker 1: trying to repay him. Max says, I don't think so,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and he's bringing over a sandwich to eat. He continues,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'm sure you know that though you just want to
- 19:13Speaker 1: be him, and Shanici says maybe no, You're probably right.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Max says, it's Amadeus syndrome. You love him so much
- 19:22Speaker 1: you hate him, your little amedeis and Shinchi's like flushing
- 19:26Speaker 1: with shame, and he says, stop it. I'm serious. Once
- 19:29Speaker 1: we get to La we're going back to Japan. Max says,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I guess it can't be helped, but is it really
- 19:36Speaker 1: what's best for ag And Shinichi's like, it's the only
- 19:39Speaker 1: way to keep him safe. I can't keep putting his
- 19:42Speaker 1: life at risk. Max is like, that's not what I meant.
- 19:46Speaker 1: You know what I mean, and he takes bye to
- 19:48Speaker 1: the sandwich. Okay, so a little bit to unpack there,
- 19:52Speaker 1: so let's just stop for a second. So I think
- 19:55Speaker 1: what's happening here is that they are referring to the
- 19:58Speaker 1: movie Amadaeus that came out in nineteen eighty four, because
- 20:02Speaker 1: that would have been a year before the manga, and
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's also talked about in the manga as well, and
- 20:07Speaker 1: from what I could gather by the Wikipedia article about it,
- 20:10Speaker 1: it is about this dude, this composer dude that like
- 20:13Speaker 1: really really loves Mozart, I think, and he thinks he's
- 20:17Speaker 1: like a gift from God. He's like super cool and everything.
- 20:20Speaker 1: And then he like meets Mozart and he realizes Mozart
- 20:23Speaker 1: is not like a good Christian person like him, and
- 20:27Speaker 1: he is really disenfranchised by it, and he's like, why
- 20:30Speaker 1: would God give Mozart this really cool fucking gift if
- 20:34Speaker 1: he's not a good Christian. So he decides that he
- 20:38Speaker 1: is going to murder Mozart. But first he like gets
- 20:42Speaker 1: him to like write a requiem that he like pretends
- 20:46Speaker 1: it's commissioned by someone, so he wants that requiem to
- 20:49Speaker 1: be written, and then he is going to take credit
- 20:51Speaker 1: for it. Once he kills Mozart or something, so it's
- 20:54Speaker 1: about that. I think. I haven't seen the movie, so
- 20:58Speaker 1: I could be wrong, but I think I think what
- 21:01Speaker 1: we're talking about here with Agi and Shunichi is that
- 21:05Speaker 1: Shunichi sees Ag as like this incredibly innately talented pole vaulter,
- 21:12Speaker 1: and he wants to be a part of that, and he,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I guess, wants to be him, as Max said, but
- 21:19Speaker 1: I don't think he really hates him. Maybe he doesn't
- 21:23Speaker 1: like the idea that he has like given up on
- 21:25Speaker 1: his dreams. I mean, that's obviously what's going on, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: he wants to do whatever possible to you know, make
- 21:32Speaker 1: his dreams his innate talent shine again. So not exactly
- 21:36Speaker 1: like Amadaeus, but kind of that same dynamic between two
- 21:40Speaker 1: people who one of them thinks that the other one
- 21:42Speaker 1: is like, you know, very very gifted and I don't know,
- 21:46Speaker 1: stuff like that. So that does kind of feed into
- 21:51Speaker 1: why Shunichi's sticking around through all of this shit that's happening,
- 21:56Speaker 1: because he's trying to do anything that it seems that
- 21:59Speaker 1: Ag would want so that he can get him out
- 22:03Speaker 1: of this you know, funk and depression that he's in.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And also I think if AG wasn't there, Shunichi would
- 22:09Speaker 1: just hang around. Like he's an investigative journalist, right, Like
- 22:15Speaker 1: he went to New York to take pictures of gangs
- 22:18Speaker 1: and shit, so like he's not like a verse too
- 22:21Speaker 1: danger or anything. So I think that he, if given
- 22:25Speaker 1: the option, would probably just stick around. But it is
- 22:29Speaker 1: good that he is realizing. I mean, he's been trying
- 22:31Speaker 1: this whole time to just get Agy out and go
- 22:34Speaker 1: back to Japan, but he has to kind of grapple
- 22:38Speaker 1: with the fact that Ag seems like he wants to
- 22:40Speaker 1: be here, which is kind of odd. And I think
- 22:44Speaker 1: it's interesting that Max asked, like, is this really good
- 22:48Speaker 1: for Ag, alluding to that it might not just be
- 22:52Speaker 1: the threat of physical violence that is the prominent factor
- 22:57Speaker 1: in deciding whether or not to go back to Japan.
- 23:00Speaker 1: That there's obviously something happening here that is not just that.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I mean, it seems at least kind of obvious. That's
- 23:09Speaker 1: Ag and Ash seem to have a really strong rapport
- 23:13Speaker 1: and seem to want to be around each other. So yeah,
- 23:18Speaker 1: that's also about the Amadaeus syndrome, which, by the way,
- 23:23Speaker 1: when I look this up, all I found were people
- 23:28Speaker 1: talking about banana fish. So it's not like it's a
- 23:31Speaker 1: real syndrome or something that you can like find out
- 23:33Speaker 1: about on the internet, except for those really cool people
- 23:37Speaker 1: on Tumblr who like broke this down for me with
- 23:40Speaker 1: banana fish. So thank you random people who like care
- 23:43Speaker 1: about banana fish and like wrote up little articles about it.
- 23:47Speaker 1: That was very helpful. But the other thing that we're
- 23:51Speaker 1: gonna see in the future about the Amadaeus syndrome or
- 23:54Speaker 1: whatever will be with two other characters. We're gonna have
- 23:57Speaker 1: kind of a mirror of this, which is something that
- 24:00Speaker 1: this show slash manga does a lot where you have
- 24:04Speaker 1: two characters that are kind of mirroring each other, but
- 24:07Speaker 1: things are playing out differently. So we'll see another example,
- 24:10Speaker 1: like I just said, later and maybe we'll talk about
- 24:12Speaker 1: it again if I even understood what I said, which
- 24:15Speaker 1: I'm not charging it. So yep, yeah, let's continue on,
- 24:19Speaker 1: shall we, Now that I just diverge so much. Anyway,
- 24:23Speaker 1: we cut to the diner exterior and it looks like
- 24:26Speaker 1: maybe it's sunset again, and we hear ash say thanks
- 24:29Speaker 1: for the coffee, and we see ash Agy and Jennifer
- 24:32Speaker 1: inside and Jim is sitting and he's reading a newspaper
- 24:36Speaker 1: behind them, and Jim says, why did you come back
- 24:40Speaker 1: here after all this time? You shouldn't be here? You
- 24:42Speaker 1: know that. Cheez leave him alone, and Ash, who is
- 24:46Speaker 1: still holding it together really well, says, I'll leave as
- 24:49Speaker 1: soon as the truck's fixed, and he starts to walk out.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Jennifer calls after him, but he leaves anyway. Shorter and
- 24:55Speaker 1: Shunichi enter, and Shorter says, we finally found a battery
- 24:58Speaker 1: that fits. And they come into Ag, saying can't she
- 25:03Speaker 1: be nicer to him? And they look over super confused
- 25:07Speaker 1: and she's like a john, but Ag pays them no mind,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and he continues, how can you say you shouldn't be here?
- 25:13Speaker 1: And he slamms the table. You're his father, yeah, Ag.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Jim's like, what's with this kid? And Ag is seething,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and Max puts his hand on Age's shoulder and he says,
- 25:25Speaker 1: he's Ash's friend, But why do you want him gone
- 25:28Speaker 1: so badly? He's your son? Don't you love him? And
- 25:32Speaker 1: Jim says, and who are you? Why are you hanging
- 25:35Speaker 1: around with him? I guess he didn't actually believe that
- 25:39Speaker 1: ashe was sleeping with them. Max says, I served with
- 25:42Speaker 1: Griff and Iraq. We were friends. Jim puts his newspaper
- 25:47Speaker 1: down and we see that the newspaper is called Dairy
- 25:51Speaker 1: cape Cod. I think it was supposed to be Daily,
- 25:53Speaker 1: but it says Dairy, which is pretty funny, and he says,
- 25:57Speaker 1: you guys want to drink. We cut too as who
- 26:00Speaker 1: was walking, and we heard Jim's voice say, when Ash
- 26:03Speaker 1: was seven, an army veteran lived on the other side
- 26:06Speaker 1: of the hill, and we go back to the diner.
- 26:08Speaker 1: He continues, seems like he was kind of a war
- 26:11Speaker 1: hero in Afghanistan. He coached the boy's little league team.
- 26:14Speaker 1: The kids around here loved him. Ash was on that
- 26:17Speaker 1: team too, But one day when he came home, he
- 26:20Speaker 1: was all bruised up and his clothes were torn. And
- 26:23Speaker 1: we cut to a very small Ash who's just beat up,
- 26:27Speaker 1: just standing motionless in the doorway, and Jim continues, I
- 26:32Speaker 1: knew immediately what had happened. Maybe a fight, I hope, No,
- 26:36Speaker 1: we know, and Max says, did you go to the cops?
- 26:40Speaker 1: And Jim's like, of course we did. I had to
- 26:43Speaker 1: drag him there. Well, what do you think they said?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Are you sure was him? Everyone loved the guy, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: They even suspected Ash of seducing him. He was just
- 26:52Speaker 1: a kid, he was seven years old, And then we
- 26:55Speaker 1: cut to Ash's huge green eyes, and Jim continues, Ash
- 26:59Speaker 1: listened to our conversation with his eyes wide open. Fuck. Yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: that's gonna really hurt and mess you up. So I
- 27:06Speaker 1: told him this is worse. If some asshole ever tries
- 27:10Speaker 1: anything like that again, just shut up and let him.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And he squeezes his glass tightly, but make sure he
- 27:16Speaker 1: pays you for it. He sets the glass down. Seems
- 27:20Speaker 1: the guy dragged Ash to his house a few times
- 27:22Speaker 1: after that, but when he was eight, Ash shot him,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and we cut to a bloody dead dude on the
- 27:29Speaker 1: floor and Ash is on the bed, roughed up, holding
- 27:34Speaker 1: a gun. Jim continues, he took my gun. They all
- 27:38Speaker 1: gasp at this. That's where you guys gasp, not all
- 27:41Speaker 1: the other things. That's the part. Jim continues. When the
- 27:45Speaker 1: cops investigated, they found a bunch of kids bones in
- 27:47Speaker 1: his basement. Ever heard of it? They called in the
- 27:50Speaker 1: blue Beard of Cape cod And we flashed to a
- 27:53Speaker 1: newspaper article about it, and it has nothing interesting, Like
- 27:56Speaker 1: I read it and it was just like, yeah, I'm
- 27:57Speaker 1: not gonna read that to you because it's just like, oh, man,
- 28:00Speaker 1: there's a house and then you go inside and there's bodies,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and I was like, stupid. It would have been nice
- 28:06Speaker 1: if there was actual information, but there was nuts. Anyway,
- 28:09Speaker 1: here we go, Jim continues, since he'd been paying Ash
- 28:13Speaker 1: seems he let his guard down. The case being what
- 28:16Speaker 1: it was, Ash wasn't found guilty, but it's a small
- 28:19Speaker 1: town people talk, you know. I tried to send him
- 28:22Speaker 1: to my little sister's place, and Age cuts in, but
- 28:25Speaker 1: he ran away. Then we see the four of them
- 28:29Speaker 1: walking back and they're just kind of silent for a
- 28:33Speaker 1: minute because this is a lot, and Shorter says, I've
- 28:36Speaker 1: known Ash for a long time, but I had no
- 28:38Speaker 1: idea and she needs She's like, you can't blame him
- 28:42Speaker 1: for not being able to trust anyone, and Age says,
- 28:45Speaker 1: but even all that couldn't break him. He looks up
- 28:48Speaker 1: at the sky. Ash is strong. Okay, let's stop. We
- 28:53Speaker 1: gotta talk about this. Take a breath here. See how
- 29:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna word this for you guys. So that was
- 29:04Speaker 1: a lot. I think that it's probably not great to
- 29:09Speaker 1: tell your son that he should just lay down and
- 29:17Speaker 1: accept it and then ask for money. Like, I think
- 29:20Speaker 1: that's a terrible thing to tell someone. And obviously Jim
- 29:24Speaker 1: knows it wasn't a great idea because of the way
- 29:26Speaker 1: he gripped his class when he said that. But I
- 29:29Speaker 1: don't have any idea what was going through his head. Actually,
- 29:31Speaker 1: the first time I watched this, he didn't catch that somehow,
- 29:35Speaker 1: because I guess I was a little bit tired and
- 29:38Speaker 1: I was reading a little slow. So I got them
- 29:40Speaker 1: make them pay, and I thought that he meant in
- 29:43Speaker 1: the metaphorical sense, like kill him or whatever, or like
- 29:48Speaker 1: go to the cops or something, not physical payment with money,
- 29:53Speaker 1: And so when I read it in the manga, I
- 29:55Speaker 1: like just put down the manga and it was like
- 29:58Speaker 1: oh okay, and had to wait for a couple of
- 30:02Speaker 1: minutes to process that, cause what. Yeah, So it's possible
- 30:10Speaker 1: that that saved Ash, which is just great, but it
- 30:16Speaker 1: also made him a pariah is that the right word?
- 30:21Speaker 1: In Cape Cod people saw him as a prostitute. Great,
- 30:27Speaker 1: so yeah, I'll mention also that Jim's sister's place is
- 30:32Speaker 1: supposed to being Philly. I don't know why that's cut
- 30:34Speaker 1: out of the anime, but I'm in Philly kind of,
- 30:38Speaker 1: you know, three minutes from Philly, so I was like, yay, Philly,
- 30:41Speaker 1: come come here. It would have been terrible in the eighties,
- 30:44Speaker 1: but that's fine. So yeah, so we shot this dude.
- 30:48Speaker 1: He was like eight and then he ran away. So
- 30:51Speaker 1: I don't know exactly the timeline of like, have how
- 30:53Speaker 1: long things occurred. I would say probably no later than
- 30:56Speaker 1: nine he was on the street, So that puts us
- 30:58Speaker 1: like two years at least where he was just alone
- 31:01Speaker 1: on the streets of New York before he was abducted.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So this is a lot, like, this is a lot,
- 31:07Speaker 1: a lot, so fuck anyway. Yeah, it's really hard to
- 31:13Speaker 1: kind of put all my thoughts in any sort of
- 31:16Speaker 1: coherent form about this because it's so much And this
- 31:20Speaker 1: a lot basically came completely out of left field for
- 31:24Speaker 1: Max and Shunichi, who haven't been privy to the conversations
- 31:28Speaker 1: that Ash has been having with ag about you know,
- 31:31Speaker 1: Club Cod and all that shit. And Shorter too, but
- 31:34Speaker 1: Shorter knows some things. I promised that he does. He
- 31:38Speaker 1: didn't know this, but I assume when Jim was like
- 31:44Speaker 1: you whore Shorter and Age, you were like, oh and
- 31:48Speaker 1: Max and SICI were like what the fuck. Anyway, what
- 31:52Speaker 1: I wanted to say that I think is really important
- 31:54Speaker 1: is on the way back, when they're all kind of
- 31:56Speaker 1: processing things and they're like, Wow, that's really terrible and
- 31:59Speaker 1: shit like that. I like that AG's reaction is different
- 32:02Speaker 1: than the other three. I mean, they're just kind of like, wow,
- 32:04Speaker 1: that's terrible, but AG is like, yeah, that's really bad.
- 32:08Speaker 1: He's so strong and I love that he is strong, AG,
- 32:14Speaker 1: And I'm with you, and I wish that I could
- 32:16Speaker 1: hug you. The way that he is seeing Ash as
- 32:20Speaker 1: a person is very different than the way the rest
- 32:24Speaker 1: of the group is at this point and kind of
- 32:26Speaker 1: always is going to be. So that's something to look
- 32:29Speaker 1: out for. That, of course I will talk about. But
- 32:33Speaker 1: it's super nice. Yeah now I'm really sad. Great. Also,
- 32:40Speaker 1: it probably wasn't great to just air Ash's whole complicated,
- 32:46Speaker 1: horrible paths like that without him around. I mean, I
- 32:49Speaker 1: figure if he wanted them to know, he would have
- 32:51Speaker 1: told them on the way there. He would have been like, hey, guys,
- 32:54Speaker 1: just so you know, the reason I didn't want to
- 32:56Speaker 1: go home is this. And since he didn't, this feels
- 32:59Speaker 1: like an agent of privacy, which sucks. It sucks that
- 33:03Speaker 1: he's not there to defend himself. Not that anything was
- 33:06Speaker 1: really said super negative about him, but still it sucks.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Oh god, I'm really really sad now. So maybe it
- 33:15Speaker 1: wasn't great to do this in the middle of the episode,
- 33:17Speaker 1: but he did, so let's continue. We have a quick
- 33:22Speaker 1: shot next of a black car turning on its lights
- 33:26Speaker 1: because it's night now, and then back to the diner
- 33:29Speaker 1: and Jennifer says, why are you being so stubborn? You
- 33:32Speaker 1: must love Ash and Jim is like, stay out of it.
- 33:36Speaker 1: The door opens and someone obscured like comes in in
- 33:41Speaker 1: a business suit and he says good evening, and Jim's like,
- 33:44Speaker 1: we're closed, and there's two guys. The guy says, come on,
- 33:50Speaker 1: just one drink. We cut to Ag who's looking out
- 33:53Speaker 1: the window. He says Ash still isn't back, and Short's like,
- 33:57Speaker 1: this is his home, don't worry. He saw eyes, and
- 34:00Speaker 1: then we see him opening the front door and he says,
- 34:02Speaker 1: I'm going to look for him, and then we see
- 34:05Speaker 1: him walking towards the diner and Shorter is like hey,
- 34:08Speaker 1: and he runs up and he's like, I'm coming with you. Good.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Also important to note that the only person who was
- 34:15Speaker 1: concerned about where the fuck Ash was was AG. So
- 34:19Speaker 1: they are walking and Shorter is like, the nights are
- 34:22Speaker 1: freezing up near Boston, and Ag again is like I
- 34:25Speaker 1: wonder where Ash is and he shouts Ash and Shorter
- 34:28Speaker 1: is like, hey, Ash, and Ag says Ash again. And
- 34:32Speaker 1: they get to kind of the top of the hill
- 34:33Speaker 1: where they're like overlooking the diner, and they see that
- 34:36Speaker 1: the lights are on in the diner and they stop.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Shorter's like, I thought they were closing. Ag says, maybe
- 34:43Speaker 1: Ash is there, and he kind of like half some
- 34:45Speaker 1: holes and he's like they're family after all. A you
- 34:47Speaker 1: think it's gonna work out. They start walking again, and
- 34:52Speaker 1: then we see Ash standing on the side of the
- 34:55Speaker 1: diner like near a window, like kind of looking in,
- 34:57Speaker 1: but not like directly in front of it, so nobody
- 34:59Speaker 1: can him from the window. And Age's like, oh, hey, look,
- 35:03Speaker 1: and he takes a deep breath and Shorter's like wait,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and Age's like Ash and Shorter covers his mouth, but
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's too late. Ash looks over and then the window
- 35:13Speaker 1: just is fucking blown out. Max and Shunichi hear it
- 35:17Speaker 1: from the house and Max says, gunshots by the diner
- 35:21Speaker 1: and they head out. Shorter and Ag are now ducked
- 35:24Speaker 1: behind some bushes and Shorter says, don't move, AG, and
- 35:27Speaker 1: AG's like, what's going on? And Shorter says what else?
- 35:31Speaker 1: Golsian's guy's found us. Ash is still standing outside of
- 35:34Speaker 1: the broken window. He's holding his gun. One of the
- 35:37Speaker 1: guys from inside says, you hear us, Ash links and
- 35:40Speaker 1: then we see inside the two guys are kind of
- 35:43Speaker 1: you know, holding Jim and Jennifer and they look beat up.
- 35:48Speaker 1: One of them is holding a gun to Jennifer's head too.
- 35:51Speaker 1: The guy continues, throw down your gun and come out
- 35:53Speaker 1: if you want them to live. Ash clenches his teeth
- 35:57Speaker 1: and Shorter's like shit, the guy can news. The woman
- 36:01Speaker 1: goes first. Jessica is obviously terrified and whimpering, and the
- 36:05Speaker 1: guy is holding her head to the gun and he says,
- 36:08Speaker 1: you want to see me blow her brains out. At this,
- 36:11Speaker 1: Ash says, stop, don't touch them, and he tosses the
- 36:14Speaker 1: gun through the window and the guy kind of like
- 36:16Speaker 1: kicks it away and he says, let them go. The
- 36:19Speaker 1: second guy is like, you're not the one giving orders here,
- 36:22Speaker 1: come in with your hands behind your head. That just
- 36:25Speaker 1: quietly says bastards. Max and Shunichi are looking on now too,
- 36:31Speaker 1: and SI's like, what do we do now? And Max
- 36:34Speaker 1: has an idea and he looks at the truck and
- 36:35Speaker 1: he's like, I've got a plan. The second guy says,
- 36:39Speaker 1: didn't you hear what I said? And Ash finally is like, fine,
- 36:43Speaker 1: I'll do what you said, damn it, and he opens
- 36:46Speaker 1: the window and he jumps in and he puts his
- 36:48Speaker 1: hands behind his bed and he says, go to hell.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Jim looks shocked. I guess that he came, which obviously
- 36:56Speaker 1: makes kind of a little bit of sense because Jim
- 37:00Speaker 1: has not been very nice. So the second guy is like,
- 37:03Speaker 1: aren't you glad you have such a loving son. The
- 37:06Speaker 1: first guy brings Jennifer over and kind of releases her
- 37:09Speaker 1: towards Ash, and she kind of runs off to him,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and as she's like, I'm so sorry for dragging you
- 37:14Speaker 1: into this, the first guy's like, you're such a fool,
- 37:18Speaker 1: and he walks over with his gun raised and says,
- 37:21Speaker 1: you really thought you could beat Popadino. Ash just kind
- 37:24Speaker 1: of laughs and he continues, never mind, the order was
- 37:28Speaker 1: to catch you alive, and he takes out handcuffs and
- 37:32Speaker 1: Ash looks kind of resolved, and then before anything could happened,
- 37:36Speaker 1: light blasts through the door and Max and Shunichi are
- 37:39Speaker 1: in the truck with the high beams on, and Max says,
- 37:41Speaker 1: freeze police. Ash uses the opportunity to kick the gun
- 37:45Speaker 1: out of the guy's hand, and he also kicks the
- 37:47Speaker 1: guy and the guy falls back into the table and
- 37:50Speaker 1: Shorter to ag says stay here, and he runs towards
- 37:53Speaker 1: the diner. The second guy is like, you punk, and
- 37:56Speaker 1: he shoots Jennifer twice in the chest. She screams. Jim
- 38:01Speaker 1: then grabs Guy Too's arm and he's like trying to
- 38:04Speaker 1: get the gun away, and he's like run Ash, and
- 38:07Speaker 1: the guy punches him and then shoots him in the
- 38:10Speaker 1: shoulder and ashes like dad, and he dives to grab
- 38:14Speaker 1: the first guy's gun, the one he kicked away, and
- 38:16Speaker 1: he shoots the second guy twice. Ash calls out to
- 38:20Speaker 1: his dad again and then he realizes that that first
- 38:23Speaker 1: guy that he kicked is behind him with a knife,
- 38:26Speaker 1: but that's okay because Shorter is behind that guy also
- 38:29Speaker 1: with a knife, and he fucking slits the dude's throats
- 38:33Speaker 1: and flood sprays Hey. The guy falls to the ground,
- 38:36Speaker 1: and he is very much dead, so they're both dead. Age,
- 38:39Speaker 1: who apparently came anyway, is looking on horrified. He puts
- 38:44Speaker 1: his hand over his mouth, and Shorter says, don't look.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You won't be able to handle it. Shuy, She's like
- 38:49Speaker 1: a chan, Are you okay? Max goes over to Jennifer
- 38:53Speaker 1: and Age's like yeah, and Shi says is she and
- 38:58Speaker 1: Max is like dead? She needs She's like no. Jim,
- 39:02Speaker 1: who is sitting holding his wounded shoulder, says she was
- 39:07Speaker 1: such a fine woman. The good ones always die young.
- 39:10Speaker 1: And then we hear a voice from outside say, Jim,
- 39:12Speaker 1: are you okay. Jim to Ash, who is holding him
- 39:16Speaker 1: by the way, says, don't worry. It's a friend, Howard.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Come in here. Howard enters and he's like I heard
- 39:23Speaker 1: gunshots and he gasps as he sees the scene, and
- 39:26Speaker 1: he's like, what happened. Jim's like they tried to rob us.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Ash is confused at this lie and Jim continues, but Jennifer.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Howard looks over and gasps and he's like Jennifer. Jim says,
- 39:41Speaker 1: call an ambulance and the cops, and Howard's like got it.
- 39:45Speaker 1: He leaves and Jim says, give me the gun. He
- 39:49Speaker 1: wipes the gun that Ash has on his shirt and
- 39:52Speaker 1: he says, your fingerprints are gone now. Ash kind of
- 39:55Speaker 1: half gasps, and Jim too, I think Shorterer says, put
- 39:59Speaker 1: the night Jennifer's hand, hurry up and leave. I'll take
- 40:02Speaker 1: it from here. He tries to get up and he
- 40:05Speaker 1: kind of winces, and Ash's like, don't move, you'll bleed
- 40:07Speaker 1: even more. Jim says, you're fighting a mafia. Don huh.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I'm impressed. Just tell me one thing. Was it one
- 40:15Speaker 1: of them that killed Griffin? And Ash says yeah, And
- 40:19Speaker 1: Jim's like, okay, I understand. I don't know what you
- 40:22Speaker 1: plan to do, but you have my blessing. Yay, Ash
- 40:26Speaker 1: says dad, and then we hear sirens in the distance
- 40:30Speaker 1: and Jim says, don't waste your time here go. Ash
- 40:34Speaker 1: is just kind of frozen. At this point. Max puts
- 40:36Speaker 1: his hand on Ash's shoulder and he's like, let's go,
- 40:40Speaker 1: and Age's like Ash. Ash looks at his dad and
- 40:44Speaker 1: he's afraid and I don't know. He's just trying to
- 40:46Speaker 1: process everything. And he finally gets up and he starts
- 40:48Speaker 1: to run, and this is when everyone else is already
- 40:51Speaker 1: exited the diner, and he says, damn you acting like
- 40:55Speaker 1: a hot shot, and he turns back and says, don't
- 40:57Speaker 1: you die, you shitty father, and Jim says same to you,
- 41:01Speaker 1: my stupid son. And then we see that the truck
- 41:06Speaker 1: is already driving off and Ag Shorter and Shunichi are
- 41:10Speaker 1: in the back and Agy's like Ash and Shorter reaches
- 41:13Speaker 1: out his hand and he's like hurry. Ash is running
- 41:15Speaker 1: to catch up, and he's like damn it, and he's crying,
- 41:18Speaker 1: he's damn it. Ash finally grabs Shorter's hand and he
- 41:22Speaker 1: tumbles into the back and he says step on an
- 41:24Speaker 1: old man, and Max says, got it, and then he
- 41:27Speaker 1: shouts like damn you really loud, and damn you is
- 41:30Speaker 1: probably not a good thing to shout. It's not strong enough,
- 41:33Speaker 1: but I didn't know what to put here, so yeah.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Then we cut to Dino's hand. He is holding some
- 41:42Speaker 1: wine in the glass and he says, thank you for
- 41:45Speaker 1: joining me tonight. I hope to clear up a misunderstanding
- 41:49Speaker 1: between us. He lifts the glass slightly and he says,
- 41:53Speaker 1: mister Lee, Oh no, not mister Lee. We see that
- 41:57Speaker 1: they are sitting at a table cross from each other,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and mister Lee says misunderstanding, and Dino's like about Ash
- 42:05Speaker 1: links and what he stole from me. Mister Lee says
- 42:09Speaker 1: banana fish, right, and Dino's like, hmmm, so you know
- 42:13Speaker 1: as much. It's a poison made for assassinations. Mister Lee
- 42:17Speaker 1: kind of gasps, and Dino continues, in other words, it
- 42:20Speaker 1: won't jeopardize your drug business. Mister Lee's like, so you
- 42:24Speaker 1: want me to just look away? Dino says, I'd like
- 42:27Speaker 1: your help concerning this case. We'd be willing to relinquish
- 42:31Speaker 1: to you a part of the European heroin market starting
- 42:33Speaker 1: next year. Mister Lee is surprised, and Dino says, what
- 42:38Speaker 1: do you think? And mister Lee's like, but why go
- 42:41Speaker 1: through so much just to catch a single boy? Oh,
- 42:44Speaker 1: there's a lot of reasons. Dino's like, Ash has some
- 42:47Speaker 1: friends with him, and two of them are journalists. Will
- 42:51Speaker 1: go through any means necessary to keep information from being leaked.
- 42:55Speaker 1: It does make sense, and at this point the ending
- 42:58Speaker 1: theme starts up, which means we don't have any anything animation. Damn.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Mister Lee says, okay, I see where the misunderstanding was.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I'll assist you however possible. Where are they now? And
- 43:10Speaker 1: Dino's like, they're headed to Los Angeles? What, how do
- 43:13Speaker 1: you know already? I understand you have some influence over
- 43:16Speaker 1: there in Chinatown. And mister Lee's like, yes, I will
- 43:21Speaker 1: assign you Lung personally to attend to it. Diino says,
- 43:25Speaker 1: you lung am I corrected, that means dragon moon and
- 43:28Speaker 1: mister Lee says, that's right, the moon that controls the darkness.
- 43:34Speaker 1: And we cut to the gang. Actually we cut to
- 43:36Speaker 1: a moon first, and we cut to the gang. It's
- 43:39Speaker 1: nighttime and they are standing around the truck and Max
- 43:42Speaker 1: is looking at his phone and he's like, that's weird.
- 43:44Speaker 1: It's supposed to be right around here, and Ash says, really,
- 43:47Speaker 1: I bet you took a wrong turn. Shorts like sick
- 43:51Speaker 1: of riding in this truck. My ass as hard as
- 43:53Speaker 1: a rock, and he like rubs his butt and Agy's like, yeah,
- 43:57Speaker 1: we've been at it for almost a week, and we
- 43:59Speaker 1: kind of see what they've done on a map. They
- 44:01Speaker 1: were in Cape Cod and they went to Chicago, then
- 44:03Speaker 1: they went to Denver. Now they are going to La
- 44:07Speaker 1: Shorter's like, I'm hungry. I want to eat something. Ash,
- 44:11Speaker 1: who is looking kind of bored. Suddenly gasps and turns
- 44:15Speaker 1: and he's like, who's there? And he has his hand
- 44:17Speaker 1: on his gun and we see some dude with a
- 44:21Speaker 1: flashlight approaching and he's like, you tell me who are you? Guys?
- 44:25Speaker 1: Max runs over to him and he's like, can you
- 44:26Speaker 1: tell us how to get to Los Angeles? And the
- 44:29Speaker 1: dude's like, what, You're in Los Angeles? Oh? By the way,
- 44:34Speaker 1: they're kind of in the woods too, and Ash and
- 44:37Speaker 1: Max are like, we are. They run over to a
- 44:40Speaker 1: clearing and they see that below the cliff that they
- 44:43Speaker 1: are on is the expansive city of Los Angeles, and
- 44:48Speaker 1: Shorter's like, wow, what if you? And Ag says it's beautiful,
- 44:52Speaker 1: and then we go to the title card My Lost City,
- 44:56Speaker 1: and that's it. Closing thoughts, so we'll start with that
- 45:01Speaker 1: end part. I don't know if you can get lost
- 45:04Speaker 1: in a park outside of Los Angeles and think that
- 45:06Speaker 1: you aren't by LA. But I know that there are
- 45:09Speaker 1: parks with stunning views of LA kind of on the
- 45:11Speaker 1: outskirts of town. So is it possible that they could
- 45:15Speaker 1: have gotten turned around and entered a park and not
- 45:17Speaker 1: realized that they were basically in LA. Maybe It's definitely
- 45:21Speaker 1: more possible in nineteen eighty five when there wasn't GPS
- 45:24Speaker 1: and it was easier to get lost. But I'll give
- 45:27Speaker 1: it to them. I don't know enough about LA to
- 45:32Speaker 1: be sure that this isn't possible, so I'm gonna pretend
- 45:34Speaker 1: that it is, because why not. We did lose a
- 45:37Speaker 1: really great scene where Ash and Shorter stole a bunch
- 45:41Speaker 1: of chickens from someone so that they could eat them,
- 45:44Speaker 1: and they had like a bonfire and stuff, and it
- 45:47Speaker 1: was adorable and I wish it was in here, but
- 45:51Speaker 1: I don't think that enough time, So that's okay. So, yeah,
- 45:56Speaker 1: that was an episode, right, Jennifer died, Ash is dead,
- 46:00Speaker 1: got shots, everything else happens, Dino knows they're going to LA,
- 46:05Speaker 1: and mister Lee is working with Dino. This is all
- 46:08Speaker 1: bad stuff. I think I covered most of what I
- 46:10Speaker 1: wanted to cover within the episode, but I did want
- 46:13Speaker 1: to talk about a couple of things back to Ash
- 46:17Speaker 1: and his past. What his dad really should have done
- 46:19Speaker 1: is just killed the dude. Like, there's a pretty good
- 46:22Speaker 1: history of people not being believed that they've been raped,
- 46:26Speaker 1: and of young boys having that problem in particular, so
- 46:32Speaker 1: I totally could see this happening that you know, you
- 46:36Speaker 1: have someone who is like a town hero and you say, hey,
- 46:39Speaker 1: this person is a sexual predator, as a pedophile, like
- 46:43Speaker 1: we need to stop them, and everyone goes like they're
- 46:45Speaker 1: nice though we love them, especially in the past. I
- 46:49Speaker 1: hope that we're moving away from that kind of a culture,
- 46:51Speaker 1: but I can definitely see this happening, especially in eighty five.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Everyone's just like, he's our fucking local hero. What do
- 46:58Speaker 1: you mean he did that? And yeah, it sucks though,
- 47:03Speaker 1: because we've now seen twice cops not help Ash. I
- 47:08Speaker 1: mean specifically, which is, you know, there's definitely a reason
- 47:12Speaker 1: for him to not trust authority, so we have this
- 47:15Speaker 1: whole thing where no one helps him. Honestly, his dad
- 47:19Speaker 1: doesn't really help him either at all. He gives him
- 47:23Speaker 1: terrible advice. But then also you remember that precinct with
- 47:27Speaker 1: that detective Evanstein. I think I'm pronouncing that correctly this time.
- 47:32Speaker 1: That dude knew a whole lot of shit that he
- 47:37Speaker 1: shouldn't know, and he did not seem to give a
- 47:40Speaker 1: shit about Ash. So obviously Ash is gonna distrust police,
- 47:44Speaker 1: even if Charlie and Jenkins seem like they actually care
- 47:48Speaker 1: and they do, he has no reason to believe that
- 47:51Speaker 1: they'd actually help him if he went to them for anything.
- 47:54Speaker 1: So yeah, we got that shit going on. I also
- 48:00Speaker 1: wanted to go over what the fuck was with his
- 48:02Speaker 1: dad and trying to get him to leave so much.
- 48:04Speaker 1: In the manga, there is a scene where Ash is
- 48:07Speaker 1: in the diner and before Ash like leaves, and then
- 48:11Speaker 1: Jim tells everybody everything. Some of the locals from the
- 48:15Speaker 1: town come in and they're like, hey, like, let's get
- 48:18Speaker 1: something to drink, and Jim is like, we're closed, and
- 48:21Speaker 1: he like drives them out. And it occurred to me,
- 48:25Speaker 1: after watching the scene and reading that scene and thinking
- 48:28Speaker 1: about it over and over again, that Jim was probably
- 48:32Speaker 1: trying to protect Ash, probably hoping that he wouldn't have
- 48:37Speaker 1: to experience the way people treated him in the past
- 48:41Speaker 1: again in Cape Cod or maybe he was embarrassed of Ash.
- 48:46Speaker 1: I don't really know. I don't know how good intentioned
- 48:49Speaker 1: he was. Does he want to spare Ash's feelings or
- 48:52Speaker 1: does he want to spare his own by not letting
- 48:56Speaker 1: the people around him see Ash and bring up that
- 48:59Speaker 1: horrible traumatic time. But also that you know, this dude
- 49:05Speaker 1: was also soliciting sex from Ash in a way that
- 49:08Speaker 1: he was compensated. So yeah, there's a lot that maybe
- 49:13Speaker 1: you don't want to bring back up for any of them.
- 49:16Speaker 1: So I think that was kind of him trying to
- 49:18Speaker 1: push him away. So another thing that I wanted to
- 49:23Speaker 1: point out, and probably the last thing I hope, is
- 49:26Speaker 1: that I think it was after this episode that I
- 49:29Speaker 1: have a friend who is currently watching this and he
- 49:32Speaker 1: just straight up asked me if Ash is a sociopath.
- 49:36Speaker 1: And it took me a really long time, and by
- 49:39Speaker 1: that I mean several hours overnight when I was trying
- 49:42Speaker 1: to sleep to kind of decide why someone would think that,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and if he is, which I do not believe that
- 49:51Speaker 1: he is. First of all, that's not a medical diagnosis anymore.
- 49:54Speaker 1: It would be antisocial personality disorder, but I don't think
- 49:57Speaker 1: he has that. First of all, he's sevent so he
- 50:00Speaker 1: cannot be diagnosed with that yet. But whatever, I think that,
- 50:05Speaker 1: what is, you know, making it look like that is
- 50:08Speaker 1: his kind of low reactions to everything. I assume he
- 50:12Speaker 1: doesn't seem super bothered by the stuff that's being said
- 50:17Speaker 1: to him, and this isn't the first time we've seen this.
- 50:20Speaker 1: So I want to propose an alternate idea, which I
- 50:23Speaker 1: believe is true, that we are seeing Ash go through
- 50:27Speaker 1: some threat responses. We've seen freeze a couple of times
- 50:31Speaker 1: in this episode, namely when he was at the window
- 50:35Speaker 1: and the dudes were like, you gotta come inside or
- 50:37Speaker 1: we're gonna kill them. I think he literally could not
- 50:41Speaker 1: move for a couple of minutes, and then when the
- 50:44Speaker 1: cops were showing up and he needed to run, he
- 50:49Speaker 1: was just paralyzed for a second. So we've definitely seen
- 50:52Speaker 1: him freeze, and we will hear more about him freezing
- 50:56Speaker 1: in the future, and it's not gonna be pretty sorry.
- 51:00Speaker 1: But the other thing that I think is starting to
- 51:02Speaker 1: come up that is also a threat response that he
- 51:05Speaker 1: absolutely has that we were kind of starting to see
- 51:08Speaker 1: and I hopefully will talk more about in the future
- 51:11Speaker 1: is fawn. I think he made a decision that it
- 51:16Speaker 1: would be better not to get into an argument, not
- 51:20Speaker 1: to engage with his father, just to be as nice
- 51:23Speaker 1: as he could be about it, because it wasn't worth it.
- 51:27Speaker 1: And that is absolutely a trauma response in this situation.
- 51:32Speaker 1: And yeah, when we get more into it, I'll talk
- 51:36Speaker 1: about it more obviously or something. But yeah, he is,
- 51:42Speaker 1: in my opinion, actually, in all of the episodes we've
- 51:46Speaker 1: seen him in not being really his authentic self. He
- 51:51Speaker 1: is trying to keep his emotions down, he is trying
- 51:55Speaker 1: not to be vulnerable, and it's coming off very cold.
- 52:00Speaker 1: But I don't think he is cold. I don't think
- 52:02Speaker 1: that would be an accurate description. And this kind of
- 52:06Speaker 1: resonates with me a little bit because after learning more
- 52:09Speaker 1: about threat responses, I realized that I like fawn, Like
- 52:14Speaker 1: that's my go to response if I feel especially threatened
- 52:19Speaker 1: in a non physical way. I think I actually have
- 52:21Speaker 1: a pretty strong fight response if I feel physically threatened,
- 52:25Speaker 1: but if it's not physical, or it's not physical towards
- 52:27Speaker 1: someone else, I will just fawn to hell, I don't
- 52:31Speaker 1: give a shit because it's way easier. And maybe that's
- 52:35Speaker 1: not a good thing. And I was reading about it
- 52:38Speaker 1: and it was like, oh, yeah, people don't know a
- 52:40Speaker 1: lot about you, and you don't know a lot about yourself,
- 52:43Speaker 1: And I was like, yep, I mean I know stuff
- 52:45Speaker 1: about myself, guys, but I definitely know that people don't
- 52:49Speaker 1: know very much about me because I will just do
- 52:51Speaker 1: whatever everyone else wants to do because it's easier. So
- 52:57Speaker 1: I feel this majorly, So I hope that you enjoyed
- 53:01Speaker 1: this episode, at least as much as you can enjoy
- 53:04Speaker 1: an episode of Banana Fish. Yeah, I hope that you
- 53:07Speaker 1: don't think this is terrible. If you do, then you
- 53:10Speaker 1: probably shouldn't continue, because it's not gonna get better from here.
- 53:13Speaker 1: We got a lot to go over and none of
- 53:15Speaker 1: it's going to be good. So with that, I'm gonna
- 53:18Speaker 1: go and turn on my air condition because I'm hot,
- 53:23Speaker 1: And I hope you have a really good whatever, And
- 53:27Speaker 1: I hope that you come back and I will be
- 53:29Speaker 1: able to metaphorically see you next week later webs
