- 0:01Speaker 1: Thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew Zimofillian for Craig Way Craig
- 0:06Speaker 1: Way in Brooklyn, New York. That is right at the
- 0:10Speaker 1: Barclays Center as the Texas Longhorns get ready to take
- 0:14Speaker 1: on Saint Joseph later tonight. That game tips off eight
- 0:18Speaker 1: thirty pm right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 0:20Speaker 1: Zone and on KVEDFM as well. So yesterday was the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Coaches Show, the We'll get that one right. That is
- 0:29Speaker 1: the Longhorned Weekly with head coach Steve Sarkejian. That is
- 0:33Speaker 1: the correct title for it, and Roger Walls interviewed. Coach
- 0:38Speaker 1: Sark did an incredible job, had a ton of fun
- 0:40Speaker 1: yesterday at Pluckers talked about previewing this one, asked coach
- 0:47Speaker 1: Sark to kind of lay out the game plan a
- 0:49Speaker 1: little bit. What is the last things we want to
- 0:51Speaker 1: hear from our head coach before going into Saturday's matchup.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is it from Longhord Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 0:57Speaker 2: A ton of respect for Mark Stoops. He's very good
- 1:00Speaker 2: friend of mine. He's done a fantastic job at Kentucky.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You know, he's built that program very similar to a
- 1:08Speaker 2: lot of the other SEC schools. They're enormous upfront on
- 1:11Speaker 2: the Owen d lines, They're enormous. They're got They've got
- 1:14Speaker 2: probably the top defensive lineman in the country for the
- 1:16Speaker 2: NFL draft, who's six seven three and fifty five pounds,
- 1:20Speaker 2: So we've got to work cutout for with him. They
- 1:22Speaker 2: always play great defense and their physical running football team
- 1:25Speaker 2: on the offensive side of the ball. So we got
- 1:27Speaker 2: to do a great job in this game of winning
- 1:31Speaker 2: on first and second down so that we can force
- 1:34Speaker 2: them into some third longs and get us off the
- 1:36Speaker 2: field because they're gonna try to shrink this game. And
- 1:38Speaker 2: then offensively, we've got to be really efficient because as
- 1:40Speaker 2: we learned even last week, we only had four possessions
- 1:43Speaker 2: in the second half of that game, and so these
- 1:45Speaker 2: teams in this conference will shrink you down pretty good,
- 1:48Speaker 2: and so you got to take advantage of your opportunities
- 1:50Speaker 2: when you get them.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And then just coming back home, Sark.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Even the Florida eleven AM game, the students were out
- 1:56Speaker 4: there in the northeast corner greeting you on your on
- 1:58Speaker 4: your field walking about nine o'clock in the morning, and
- 2:01Speaker 4: I know you want that place buzzin on.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Saturday without a doubt.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I mean, there's nothing like going into DKR and for
- 2:06Speaker 2: this to be the last one of the season. We
- 2:09Speaker 2: never take it for granted. That's why I do my
- 2:11Speaker 2: walk before every game to make sure that I like
- 2:13Speaker 2: to say, be where my feet are and I'm in
- 2:15Speaker 2: DKR for another game day. But you know, I'm I'm
- 2:19Speaker 2: excited for our fans because I hope they can feel
- 2:24Speaker 2: kind of this era of Texas football. What's happening, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: from a year ago to where we were as a
- 2:28Speaker 2: ten and one football team playing to go to the
- 2:31Speaker 2: Big twelve championship game and where we are right now
- 2:33Speaker 2: is a nine and one football team trying to play
- 2:36Speaker 2: ourselves into the SEC Championship game and hopefully the College
- 2:38Speaker 2: football playoffs again. I mean, this is an awesome time
- 2:41Speaker 2: and we love the support from Longhorn Nation.
- 2:43Speaker 3: For sure.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I don't think there's any such thing as a bad
- 2:46Speaker 1: defense in the SEC. Every SEC defense, maybe outside of
- 2:51Speaker 1: Mississippi State, is a good SEC defense. And the one
- 2:55Speaker 1: thing that Kentucky does better than most other teams is
- 2:59Speaker 1: played defense. That is where they're bread and butter. That
- 3:02Speaker 1: is a stoops team to the core. But when you
- 3:05Speaker 1: go into the numbers. When you kind of get into
- 3:06Speaker 1: the numbers a little bit deeper, Kentucky's a very good
- 3:10Speaker 1: pass defense in team defensive team. When you go through
- 3:13Speaker 1: the numbers and you look at how many yards they
- 3:15Speaker 1: give up in the air per game, they are kind
- 3:19Speaker 1: of right in the middle of the group. Right. Texas
- 3:21Speaker 1: is secondary best in the conference. Has only allowed about
- 3:25Speaker 1: two hundred ish yards two hundred and forty ish yards
- 3:27Speaker 1: per game. Kentucky a little bit more three to twenty
- 3:30Speaker 1: rush defense, however, correction, let's let's get that one right.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Let's get that right and right. Kentucky's past defense one
- 3:38Speaker 1: eighty eight per game. It's like, wow, they give up
- 3:41Speaker 1: a tony yards one eighty eight per game. Texas is
- 3:43Speaker 1: the best in the conference that won thirty six. Okay,
- 3:47Speaker 1: rush defense, however, Kentucky struggles against the run. That's something
- 3:50Speaker 1: that Texas is gonna want to kind of take advantage
- 3:52Speaker 1: of in this game, using that offensive line that the
- 3:55Speaker 1: long Horns have been able to get via the Pancake
- 3:58Speaker 1: Fund and then just going in the trans portal and
- 4:00Speaker 1: also just coaching these guys up. This Longhorn front front
- 4:04Speaker 1: five has done a very good job of not only
- 4:07Speaker 1: keeping Quinn viewers alive and healthy for the most part
- 4:10Speaker 1: this season, but also getting some rushing lanes for the
- 4:14Speaker 1: Longhorn running backs. That is where this game is going
- 4:17Speaker 1: to be won or lost. I talked earlier this morning
- 4:19Speaker 1: on the Morning Kickoff with Mark Henry, The World's Strongest Man.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You listen to it right here on Sports Radio AM
- 4:24Speaker 1: thirteen hundred and from seventy nine AM. We were talking
- 4:27Speaker 1: about what is going to be the deciding factor in
- 4:31Speaker 1: this game, and I have very strongly been on the
- 4:35Speaker 1: side of if Steve Sarkisian wants to throw the ball
- 4:37Speaker 1: around the yard, he's going to be able to. Texas
- 4:40Speaker 1: can scheme up an offensive game plan that if they
- 4:43Speaker 1: want to throw the ball, they will be able to.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But if Texas wants to do what I think is
- 4:50Speaker 1: the plan, which is just lean on Kentucky to the
- 4:53Speaker 1: point that you get a couple early scores in the
- 4:54Speaker 1: first half and you kind of ride this one out.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Make it a grit grind type of game through Senior Day,
- 5:01Speaker 1: get through the emotion, get through all of the other
- 5:03Speaker 1: stuff to get to Texas A and M next week
- 5:07Speaker 1: to control your destiny and to play for an SEC championship.
- 5:11Speaker 1: In a few weeks. That is the game plan, and
- 5:15Speaker 1: the way that you execute that game plan is by
- 5:16Speaker 1: running the ball. Now, Texas is offensive plan this entire season.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The running back room has been very good. But don't
- 5:26Speaker 1: take my word for it, and don't take Steve Sarkeesian's
- 5:29Speaker 1: word for it. You're gonna want to listen to Mark
- 5:32Speaker 1: Stoops because he kind of gave a lot of credit
- 5:36Speaker 1: to the actually not kind of. He did give a
- 5:38Speaker 1: ton of credit to the Longhorned team. This is cutting
- 5:41Speaker 1: number eight. Mark Stoops on no weaknesses on this Longhorned team.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Well, I mean, there's no weaknesses on this team. But
- 5:47Speaker 4: if you the eye test there, they're as strong as
- 5:49Speaker 4: anybody in the country.
- 5:51Speaker 3: To tell me one group.
- 5:53Speaker 4: I mean, you look at them offensively, you know, a
- 5:56Speaker 4: dynamic play caller and a great coach.
- 5:59Speaker 3: O line is completely solid.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Running backs two great ones, maybe probably more than Pot four,
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know what I mean. But wide receiver room arguably
- 6:09Speaker 4: the best in the country. H dynamic tight end tight ends,
- 6:14Speaker 4: you know.
- 6:15Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Defensively front four, you know, they lost some guys that
- 6:18Speaker 4: were pros, replaced them in the portal with pros, really deep,
- 6:22Speaker 4: really big, you know, I'd say, you know, arguably again
- 6:26Speaker 4: the best secondary in the country with bar Non and
- 6:30Speaker 4: you know, you put that together a pretty solid team.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Now, I want to point this out that because we're
- 6:35Speaker 1: going to play another clip from Mark Stoops kind of
- 6:37Speaker 1: giving given credit to Steve Sarkisian and the coaching job
- 6:40Speaker 1: he's done, and the way that sark talks about Stoops,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you would think that they've been best of friends for
- 6:46Speaker 1: years and years and years, which might be the case. However,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I do think that there's another level to this, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: we're going to get to that secondary level. We're going
- 6:54Speaker 1: to onion this one through, but let's play cut number
- 6:58Speaker 1: ten on the creativity of Steve Sarkisian and the offensive
- 7:03Speaker 1: game plan.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Yeah, creative, you know, creative, you hear the word, you know,
- 7:08Speaker 4: I can. He's probably thrown a lot around, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: in press conferences across the country, but dynamic getting you
- 7:16Speaker 4: he does a great job of marrying the run in
- 7:20Speaker 4: the past, you know, and then a fantastic job.
- 7:26Speaker 3: In the screen game off all of that.
- 7:29Speaker 4: So you think it round, you're taking play action pass,
- 7:31Speaker 4: come back to a screen and he ties it together
- 7:35Speaker 4: as good as anybody.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Which I think most Longhorn fans. In fact, not most
- 7:40Speaker 1: all Longhorn fans would agree that Steve Sarkisian is one
- 7:43Speaker 1: of the better play callers that has come through the
- 7:45Speaker 1: forty acres. I like the fact that other teams are
- 7:50Speaker 1: copying what Texas is doing. They say the most the
- 7:54Speaker 1: best form of flattery is imitation, and if people are
- 7:57Speaker 1: trying to run the imitation of the long worn offense,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I feel pretty good about that. And a Sarkisian talked
- 8:02Speaker 1: about Andy Reid taking from the playbook. I guarantee you
- 8:05Speaker 1: this coming Sunday, you're going to see some more Texas
- 8:08Speaker 1: long war plays going throughout the NFL, let alone college football,
- 8:12Speaker 1: let alone high school football. Through a high school football
- 8:14Speaker 1: game on a couple days ago, and I saw a
- 8:15Speaker 1: Sarkesian screenplay, It's like, oh, it's going everywhere. Is Steve
- 8:20Speaker 1: Starksian is Steph Curry of football? Has he changed the game?
- 8:25Speaker 3: Now?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Baby? Time will tell uh Mark Stoops on coach starks
- 8:30Speaker 1: coaching philosophy and the way that he has kind of
- 8:33Speaker 1: built this thing up. Because there's another again part to
- 8:37Speaker 1: this with the Mark Stoops angle here that we're going
- 8:39Speaker 1: to get to.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Say again, another great opportunity another great challenge going into Texas.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Coach Stark at them playing at a very high level,
- 8:50Speaker 4: a very good football team that he's been building for
- 8:53Speaker 4: some time. I think, you know what's evident, they have
- 8:56Speaker 4: a lot of continuity, and I think it's the only
- 8:59Speaker 4: power for school in the countrary that had the same
- 9:02Speaker 4: offense of coordinator, same head coach, and same defensive coordinators.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So they have continuity and that it shows both in
- 9:09Speaker 4: their recruiting and you know the portal that the additions
- 9:13Speaker 4: that they got in the portal, especially offense where you
- 9:15Speaker 4: look at their wideouts, a couple of guys they got
- 9:17Speaker 4: are added to a dynamic wide receiver group.
- 9:21Speaker 3: But just a good football team top to bottom.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So coach Stoops is doing a whole lot of talking here,
- 9:30Speaker 1: giving the Texas Longhorns message boards absolutely nothing to talk about.
- 9:36Speaker 1: That is the part that I think is the most interesting,
- 9:39Speaker 1: because when you are a head coach of any college
- 9:42Speaker 1: football team, the number one thing you do not want
- 9:45Speaker 1: to do is put your foot in your mouth. The
- 9:48Speaker 1: number one thing you do not want to do is
- 9:51Speaker 1: give your opponent, give message, give fans, especially when you're
- 9:55Speaker 1: coming into a hostile environment like DKR. You do not
- 9:57Speaker 1: want to give anyone any sort of extra material to
- 10:03Speaker 1: put on that bulletin board. And Coach Sarkisyan did the
- 10:06Speaker 1: exact same thing. When you go through and you listen
- 10:08Speaker 1: to the way that Sark talks about Stoops, when you
- 10:12Speaker 1: go through and talk about the type of coach he is,
- 10:15Speaker 1: this is Sark cutting number twelve. What does Mark Stupe's
- 10:18Speaker 1: stability say about the type of coach that he is?
- 10:21Speaker 1: This is from Thursday's SEC press conference.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Well, first of all, Mark and I are very good friends,
- 10:27Speaker 2: very good friends, and we've known each other for a
- 10:29Speaker 2: long time. I tried to hire him actually when I
- 10:33Speaker 2: got the job at Washington, I tried to hire him
- 10:35Speaker 2: away from his brother, and he told me yes, and
- 10:38Speaker 2: then he said no, I can't leave my brother. So
- 10:40Speaker 2: we go back a ways. I've got a ton of
- 10:43Speaker 2: respect for him as a coach. You know. It's a
- 10:47Speaker 2: blue collar approach to what they do. They play the
- 10:49Speaker 2: game the right way, you know, and I think he's
- 10:53Speaker 2: instilled that in that program. They have an identity. They
- 10:56Speaker 2: know how they want to play, you know, every game.
- 10:58Speaker 2: They know what type of team they want to put
- 11:00Speaker 2: together each year. As they as they go through it,
- 11:03Speaker 2: and I think that's what speaks volumes to the coach
- 11:07Speaker 2: that he is. There's a level of consistency in his
- 11:09Speaker 2: approach to it all. So, like I said, we're great friends,
- 11:12Speaker 2: a ton of respect for him and look forward to
- 11:14Speaker 2: seeing him.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Saturday Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Andrew zim Will
- 11:18Speaker 1: filling in for Craig Way as we continue our number
- 11:20Speaker 1: one of the Craig Way Show. That was Coach Sarkisian
- 11:23Speaker 1: talking about Mark Stoops, the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats,
- 11:26Speaker 1: because I was going through this whole thing. I truly
- 11:30Speaker 1: believe that both these guys have respect for one another.
- 11:33Speaker 1: This game on Saturday is just another speed bump for
- 11:38Speaker 1: the Longhorns ultimate goal of winning a national championship. After
- 11:42Speaker 1: playing in the playoffs last year, the goal is to
- 11:44Speaker 1: win a national championship this season. They are already firmly
- 11:48Speaker 1: in the playoff race. They're already a firmly set up
- 11:51Speaker 1: to potentially have a buy So we'll get to you
- 11:54Speaker 1: here later as well. But the coaching coaches cannot give
- 12:00Speaker 1: bulletin board material to their opponent, and Mark Stoop's got
- 12:05Speaker 1: a lot of grief this offseason. When Texas A and
- 12:08Speaker 1: M almost hired him, Mike Elko seemed to be the
- 12:11Speaker 1: guy at A and M. Texas A and M owns
- 12:13Speaker 1: their destiny, They own their fate on how these next
- 12:17Speaker 1: couple weeks go. They have the biggest game in Texas
- 12:19Speaker 1: A and M history coming up next weekend when the
- 12:22Speaker 1: Longhorns come to Talent for potential to play in the
- 12:25Speaker 1: SEC Championship game. And what does Mike Elco do. You're
- 12:28Speaker 1: trying to make sure you don't put your foot in
- 12:29Speaker 1: your mouth. You're trying to make sure you don't give
- 12:31Speaker 1: any bulletin board material to material to anyone. This is
- 12:34Speaker 1: what he does.
- 12:35Speaker 2: If we didn't have that steak, what's at steak, maybe
- 12:39Speaker 2: you would worry about it.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I think our focus is single handling on Texas.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I'm in on Auburn right now, And.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't put your foot in your mouth. Coach
- 12:47Speaker 1: Sarkisian is doing the opposite. He has continued to win
- 12:51Speaker 1: big games, win press conferences. The standard is a standard
- 12:55Speaker 1: and he is raising the bar every single day. When
- 12:57Speaker 1: we come back on The Craig Way Show, it's a Friday,
- 13:00Speaker 1: which means it is time to pick on our brothers.
- 13:04Speaker 1: To the south, the hanging chad of the Union. It's
- 13:11Speaker 1: Florida Man Friday, that is right, Florida Man Friday on
- 13:14Speaker 1: Inconceivable coming up after the break next on sports Radio
- 13:18Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred, The Zone
