- 0:16Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:18We are on episode 44 and I'm joined, as always by Let's Go.
- 0:23Dear Menzies, up the road there. How are you doing Monday
- 0:26evening? Come back doing well, almost set
- 0:32a crazy time of the year but not excited to be chatting with you
- 0:35guys. Yeah, we're just talking offline
- 0:38about your Elf on the Shelf shenanigans, so you're prepped
- 0:42for tomorrow's rendition. I caught me out here, but I may
- 0:47have left it on the counter for hail.
- 0:48So I appreciate it. I appreciate whatever it ends
- 0:53up. I mean, yeah, if the kids, I
- 0:59don't want to spoil the magic of Christmas, but hopefully the
- 1:02kids are old enough when they hear this to know what's
- 1:04happened. Oh, should I?
- 1:07Should I not have said that? No, they don't.
- 1:11Do they not listen? They're not listeners,
- 1:14unfortunately. Pad the stats with three of
- 1:17them, but. Well, it's that time of year and
- 1:21Santa. Well, what do you think about
- 1:23this Owen? Welcome to show how you doing.
- 1:26I'm good. I'm good.
- 1:26Thank you. It's great to be here.
- 1:29So I seen the other day that apparently Father Christmas is a
- 1:33British saying and Santa is like the Americanized version.
- 1:37So what would the pair of you refer to him as Santa?
- 1:44We call him Santa. Yeah, but you call Father
- 1:49Christmas, apparently. No, you just don't.
- 1:54No one does. Just like the front crawl.
- 1:56No one says that. OK, the British listeners,
- 2:01you're gonna have to back me. Get on Father Christmas.
- 2:04Father Christmas. Definitely not Saint Nick.
- 2:10No, that's too formal. But in other news, seen some
- 2:14something sad online today. Apparently a former world record
- 2:18holder, Australian bloke Kerry O'Brien passed away as a 78 year
- 2:23old. He was active athlete in the 60s
- 2:25and the 70s and funnily enough, on the back of having Evan
- 2:30Yeager on last week, he was a 3000 meter steeplechase athlete.
- 2:35So his world record at the time back in 1970 was 822 and that
- 2:40was an Australian record for 23 years.
- 2:44So sad. Sad to hear about that.
- 2:48I did see that there was a write up.
- 2:50I think World Athletics kind of like done a bit of a tribute to
- 2:53him and stuff. And at the bottom it said like
- 2:56with thanks to Len Johnson, I think he's like one of the the
- 3:00old dogs in the sport and he knows everything about everyone,
- 3:02doesn't he? So yeah, he's got the stats.
- 3:06I did see that on the shy notes and did a bit of Googling some
- 3:10ridiculous times of that, particularly of that what are we
- 3:14talking 50 odd years ago. Apparently, unfortunately
- 3:20enough, another similarity to Evan Jaeger in maybe it was like
- 3:25the 68 Olympics? I can't remember, but if you're
- 3:28interested you can check the World Athletics article.
- 3:30He was leading and he fell on the penultimate lap and then his
- 3:35teammate went on to win gold. It may not have been the
- 3:41Olympics, but it was something for a medal.
- 3:43Anyway, what have we got this week?
- 3:49We have, unfortunately, I've got the ashes down here just for
- 3:53some small talk because I didn't want Dean to beat me to it and
- 3:56Owens put himself on mute, but I can see that he's shouting
- 3:59already, so stay on mute just. Wait for everyone to log off
- 4:03here now the ashes. Fucking hell, what have we come
- 4:07to? Cycling in at this chat, They're
- 4:12the two most popular segments. This podcast started so well.
- 4:19Yeah. OK.
- 4:19We can. Did you?
- 4:21TuneIn Well, we can just mention that Aussies 13 nil for oh,
- 4:27there's two Tests left which which is it's a classic
- 4:31Australian tradition, like the day after Christmas, there's the
- 4:35next Test and everyone tucks into Christmas leftovers and
- 4:38watches the cricket. So I'll be looking forward to
- 4:42that. But it's more of just a victory
- 4:44lap for Australia now. Yeah, all the English should
- 4:48them just get themselves on the plane home for Christmas.
- 4:53There's a lot here. Did you notice that?
- 4:55See the the. Yeah, the Army.
- 4:59Army. Army, yeah.
- 5:01Which that was it. Saturday or Sunday, when it
- 5:06seems to be a common theme that at some point throughout each
- 5:10Test series, they're like, they're half in the game.
- 5:14Like they're never in control, but there's like a chance at
- 5:18some point, an optimistic chance.
- 5:20And then the the balmy army got quite up and about and then
- 5:23within like half an hour the game's over and it's like, Oh my
- 5:27God. Yeah, that was it.
- 5:30There's a lot of excited English people momentarily, so that was
- 5:33good. Yeah, it went to lunch or dinner
- 5:36and it was like they needed to chase down 126 and they had like
- 5:403 or 4 wickets in hand. And Bumble was on the commentary
- 5:44like talking about them being like one of the greatest chasing
- 5:48teams in history and blah blah. Went for a bike ride 60 minutes
- 5:52and when it came back the the little Ashes and was being
- 5:56presented. Anyway, moving on, moving on
- 6:02some point during the week, this week we're going to distribute
- 6:05the we're still trying to settle our name, the end of year awards
- 6:10from easy double could be the class of 2025 could be easy
- 6:15double wrapped. But yeah, we're we're still
- 6:17trying to figure it out. And we're going to stay very on
- 6:20theme with the easy double podcast.
- 6:22So you, the listeners are going to decide who is the King
- 6:26YouTube of 2025. We're going to have Australian
- 6:31Athlete of the Year, Irish Athlete of the Year and British
- 6:33Athlete of the Year in honour of all three of the hosts.
- 6:37And what else did they have in there?
- 6:39Oh, because we cover like the global scene so much.
- 6:41There's top male overall international athlete and top
- 6:45female international athlete. And we did get some feedback
- 6:49last time about having some PBS and stuff on there for guidance.
- 6:53So I haven't done it for the Australian, British and Irish,
- 6:59but for the international ones there is a little reminder as to
- 7:02maybe why they've been nominated there.
- 7:05So please get involved with that.
- 7:06That'll be very fun. And yeah, you, the listeners
- 7:09decide. And then we can we can talk
- 7:11about the votes that come in next week and maybe we'll throw
- 7:14our hat in the ring as well. Is it?
- 7:19Is it best year or best performance or?
- 7:25What do you how do you think we score it?
- 7:29Just like overall athletes of the year, Like say if someone's
- 7:33won a marathon and someone else has ran a world record, you have
- 7:36to decide yourself whether you think winning the marathon or
- 7:39running a world record is more impressive.
- 7:42So everyone has the journalistic power this week to be scoring
- 7:47these votes. What's happened this week then
- 7:50in the running world specifically, we've had a meet
- 7:52over in New South Wales called the Albie Thomas Mile and
- 7:55there's also a 5K on there. There was a interesting marathon
- 7:59called the Marathon Project. I don't know if you heard too
- 8:02much about that, but we'll get into it.
- 8:04I had the commentators cast the famous last words saying we're
- 8:08not going to speak about Grand Slam track anymore.
- 8:11And then the day we released last week's episode, there was
- 8:15some further news coming out, which I'm going to take back
- 8:19exactly what I said and we are going to speak about it because
- 8:22this was quite interesting. And Team GB and Team Ireland
- 8:27have announced their teams for the world cross country upcoming
- 8:30in January, right? Then I'll be Thomas Miles.
- 8:34So there was actually a few front runner guys over here at
- 8:37this event. I think they were competing in
- 8:39maybe like the B mile and maybe 1 of the 8 hundreds as well
- 8:42because I think RAF took them up to Perisher during the week last
- 8:46week for a short altitude stint, which is pretty cool.
- 8:51And then yes, so there was the Australian Mile Championships
- 8:54going on. So Jayla Hancock Cameron, who's
- 8:57been pretty frequent on the women's domestic scene over the
- 9:02past couple of years, she won in 437 from Zoe Melkwich in 438 and
- 9:09Georgia Wincup in 439. The men's was won by Alexander
- 9:14Stith, who also won the 3000 metres at Zasipek the week
- 9:18prior. So back-to-back wins they're
- 9:20leading into Christmas for Alexander very nice little
- 9:24spell. He won in four O 259 from Lucas
- 9:28cheers four O 374 Lucas cheers was also second at Zatarpec so
- 9:33unfortunate back-to-back seconds for the young man there and
- 9:37Matthew Scarb was third in four O 4.
- 9:41Now the mile is usually the main event here, but given the Cam
- 9:46Myers announced he was going for an Australian under 25,000 meter
- 9:50record, I don't know if the 5000 meters turned into more of the
- 9:54main events because credit where credit's due to those fields and
- 9:59those athletes in those fields. But you wouldn't be too harsh in
- 10:05saying that maybe those fields lacked a little bit of depth for
- 10:08a domestic championship race. And when you look at the 5000
- 10:13meters, Cam Myers, so we had 1325 to chase down, which is a
- 10:18record back from is it 26 year old record?
- 10:22I think a guy called Mizan Mahari.
- 10:26And you might look at that name and think that bloke doesn't
- 10:28sound Australian, which you you might be right to think because
- 10:32he was Ethiopian born but trained and lived a lot of his
- 10:36career in Australia. So yeah, he ran 1325 back in the
- 10:40day and Cam Myers, he came up a little short.
- 10:43He ran 1332. But then when you see second
- 10:47place was Carl Davis 1346, so a considerable margin back and
- 10:53Luke Hints was third in 1416. Yeah, I will actually seen the
- 10:59last. I found someone put up a link to
- 11:02the stream and actually like just fast forwarded it to the 5K
- 11:07and yeah, come by, it's just like solo running this.
- 11:10And apparently it was pretty humid, so like it wasn't the
- 11:14best conditions. So to run like a 1330 solo,
- 11:20yeah, it would have been pretty good.
- 11:21But I think he was just trying to get all the records, wasn't
- 11:23he? He's trying to get all the under
- 11:2420 records before he's not eligible anymore.
- 11:28Yeah, so I have to Google his birthday.
- 11:29So I was like trying to do the math and it's not till next
- 11:32June. But with how the like kind of
- 11:34calendar year works in athletics, once he's into his
- 11:3820th birth year, he's no longer classed as an under 20.
- 11:41So if he had the done it, he literally would have done it
- 11:44with like what, 8 or 9 days to spare?
- 11:47So we have to give it a shot, I guess.
- 11:49And do you know that young New Zealand lad?
- 11:52What's his name? Oh, Sam.
- 11:55Ruth. Yeah, he done this school
- 11:57competition apparently or something, and he done the 815
- 12:00hundred double and he got like the under 161780 or was it under
- 12:0417/18/19 and 20 New Zealand records something crazy like on
- 12:09back-to-back days. Did he do the 5K?
- 12:13There's a 5K in New Zealand recently as well, wasn't there?
- 12:16And I think Hayden Wilde might have done it.
- 12:19Is that? As well.
- 12:22It's like fourth, I think the thing you're saying is a bit out
- 12:25of shape, but because it it's their offseason, but basically
- 12:31didn't run an extra lap this time.
- 12:34I think I've seen that Sam Ruth's name next to a 1340 and
- 12:38he's like, if Kam Myers is under 20, he's under 17 or something.
- 12:42He's got a few years on him. So scary.
- 12:47He did come away with the consolation of a new PB though.
- 12:49So was PB going into it was 1349?
- 12:52Although I'm not sure that'll be much of A silver lining for him
- 12:55because we all know, and he probably knows himself, he's in
- 12:59far better shape than a 1330 given the the temperature and
- 13:05the solo run. It's a tough ask, but wasn't AB.
- 13:09He's got all the other records, so I'm sure, I'm sure he'll wake
- 13:11up feeling pretty OK once he gets over it.
- 13:15The next events, the marathon project, they don't know how
- 13:18much of this you've seen, but sometimes you know, when people
- 13:22say, oh, I've seen it on, I can't remember where I've seen
- 13:25it, but they're like deliberately, they don't want to
- 13:27give credit to the thing where they've seen it.
- 13:30I can't remember where I had the interview, but I had the race
- 13:34director of this race talking about it.
- 13:37And it's pretty cool because he started it in COVID, you know,
- 13:41when all the races were getting cancelled and stuff.
- 13:43And he set it up to try and help as many people as he could, hit
- 13:48an Olympic trial standard. And then the race fell away
- 13:52after COVID because all the other established races came
- 13:56back and he didn't maybe think there was a place for it
- 13:58permanently. But he's brought it back this
- 14:01year because he was saying it's an American based race, It's in
- 14:04Arizona. And he's saying, I think what
- 14:08America does really well is we have the marathon majors,
- 14:11Boston, Chicago, New York. But besides those massive
- 14:15marathons, the next step down, it isn't really there like he
- 14:20referenced. I think there's like Grandma's
- 14:22and CIM and a couple of others. But he was saying in terms of
- 14:27like paying particular attention to the elites and those who want
- 14:31to run fast, we think there's a bit of a gap in the market.
- 14:35So the way they've set it up, there's two races.
- 14:37There's a professional race, which is capped at 100 men, 100
- 14:41women. And there's what's called a gold
- 14:43wave race, which is capped at 500 men and 500 women.
- 14:48And it's all driven at being like high performance.
- 14:51So they offer bottles for everyone.
- 14:56There's an indoor warm up area. There's pace groups I think in
- 15:00the like the gold wave, which is more of the open race every 5
- 15:04minutes. And I think in the professional
- 15:07race there was pace groups like every two minutes, even like
- 15:11Rory Linklasser was doing a pace job for some of them.
- 15:15And they end up getting a decent isn't by Noah by no means and a
- 15:21major elite line up, but they had Paul Chilimo.
- 15:25He's like two time Olympic medalist.
- 15:29They had a guy, a German guy called Johannes Muchman.
- 15:32He's run like 210 to 11. And so they had a decent turn
- 15:36out and the winner was a guy called JP Flavin.
- 15:40Apparently he ran them down to run two O 918.
- 15:44And then to be fair, the other names don't mean all that much
- 15:48to me, but I just thought it was a cool concept and worth talking
- 15:52about. The the woman's women's winner
- 15:54was Prashar Shirono in 22517. But they they charge $500 as an
- 16:02entry fee, which is U.S. dollars.
- 16:05Extremely extortionate. But the way that they justify it
- 16:08is the pitching it as though it's like it's tailored for you
- 16:12to perform like ridiculously well.
- 16:15The small caps on the field, the same that comes into the pricing
- 16:19because obviously lots of these, these big races, they just want
- 16:22to sell as many tickets as they can and generate as much revenue
- 16:25as they can. Whereby these are having more of
- 16:27a focused look on it and they give you a goodie bag.
- 16:31I think they said there's a pair of Hoka Cialos or something in
- 16:35the goodie bag and everything. Yeah, I don't know how I'd feel
- 16:40about £500 for a race now. Fair enough.
- 16:44The shoes are probably worth. Was it 200 high 200 three,
- 16:48$100.00. So yeah, I suppose you do get
- 16:54your bottles. There's only, I think there was
- 16:56only like 200 in the race. Was there 200?
- 16:59Like there's deletes and then there's 200 people on top of
- 17:01that. So it would be a pretty cool
- 17:02experience. And it's a.
- 17:04It's a looped course, is it? Yeah, apparently 6 point a 5K
- 17:08loop. So yeah, sometimes when you're
- 17:12worried about groups and stuff, you might fall off your group,
- 17:16but you're always going to have people either coming past you or
- 17:18you're going back past them. Would drive you a bit insane
- 17:21though. Have you ever done like a looped
- 17:23marathon, Dean? No, I was meant to pay some mate
- 17:27with Bibra Lake Marathon which is a home certified race. 45.
- 17:33Minutes South of Perth, maybe not even a half an hour around
- 17:36the adventure World, that sort of area.
- 17:39And that's a similar distant loop around the lake that's
- 17:42pretty flat and fast, but on footpath.
- 17:44But I've run around there. But no, that's as close as I've
- 17:49got. That wouldn't be easy.
- 17:51I've done, you know, Ballarat's 2 laps, 2 laps.
- 17:54Very different to, you know. 66 the the first one I remember
- 18:01watching. This.
- 18:04Oh wow. You watched this during COVID
- 18:08though? The first one.
- 18:10Yeah, yeah, I think it was a bit of a funny time, like US Olympic
- 18:16trials happened and talking about a similar race.
- 18:19So like Bewa, which I ran start of 2020, you had drink bottles,
- 18:24it was elite. Only men's race have captured
- 18:27about 300 people and you had strict qualifying standards for
- 18:31us non Japanese. We got to stay at a race hotel
- 18:35free of charge. No, no payment for entry, had
- 18:38access to bottles. It was a pretty handy race.
- 18:41And I think, I don't know if it was broadcast rights that helped
- 18:44keep it alive and just the long history of the race, but it was
- 18:48a very good race to do. And yeah, certainly didn't have
- 18:51to shell out the same amount of costs.
- 18:54You'd pay more than that just in airfares, though.
- 18:57But yeah, I don't know. The opportunity to run a flat
- 19:01and fast race would be appealing.
- 19:03But yeah, I remember watching this race around 2020, which US
- 19:07trials happened a week after that, like BY race, and so the
- 19:10American team was set. But then I think this race still
- 19:13went on, which was helping people qualify for Olympic
- 19:16standards, but it was all a bit messy, I thought.
- 19:19So like Sarah Hall was running quicker than everyone, but I
- 19:21don't know if she could necessarily get onto the Olympic
- 19:24team or can't remember. But I just remember her running
- 19:26really fast at this. And I think she ran really fast
- 19:29at London as well around that year.
- 19:31But I remember tuning in, watching the race and watching
- 19:33her run really well. At B1, did you do all those
- 19:37services justice? How did you run?
- 19:40Yeah, I think I ran like 2/19/57 or something.
- 19:44I stuck under 220 by 3 seconds. Oh, was that the?
- 19:47First time on there and then B water.
- 19:51Is it attending to Fukuoka? Got absorbed by that or
- 19:54something? No.
- 19:57Similar, it's a FOCA worker happens in December, same day as
- 20:00Valencia. This one happens in February,
- 20:03but this this got absorbed by Osaka.
- 20:06So this the Osaka race the the they expanded to men and women
- 20:11and the the top. However, many get to participate
- 20:14at the the front of the mass participation race.
- 20:17So you still get access to bottles and all that sort of
- 20:19stuff if you make the selection time.
- 20:23Yeah. OK, cool.
- 20:24Thank you. Well, that's the short round of
- 20:27results for this week news items, though there are a few on
- 20:32here and this one has kept me entertained all week.
- 20:34So going back to the point where I said I wouldn't be speaking
- 20:37about grand sum track, here I am.
- 20:41So on the Monday, I think it was after we recorded last week
- 20:46where we've mentioned that they filed for bankruptcy and they've
- 20:49kind of stated how many assets they had, what the liquidities
- 20:52were and how many creditors they had.
- 20:55There was then an article which came out listing the top 20
- 20:59creditors, which is very insightful if you're as bothered
- 21:04or as much of A nerd as I am. So what's interesting about it
- 21:09is I think the top three on there, they're all like kind of
- 21:12to do with broadcasting and production firms, Momentum, CHP,
- 21:17Partnership, PMY. So one of them is like a British
- 21:21broadcaster and the other one's an American broadcaster and
- 21:23they're owed over 4, almost four and a quarter, $1,000,000
- 21:29between them. The Xenographics company who's
- 21:32owed $700,000 there they kind of put graphics on the screen
- 21:36whilst the broadcast going on, you know, with stats and stuff.
- 21:41And I guess the real interesting part is the list then goes on to
- 21:45talk about the the athletes who earn money.
- 21:50So you've got Sidney McLaughlin, Levrone who's owed $356,000,
- 21:57Gabby Thomas $250,000, Kenny Bednarek $225,000, Josh Kerr
- 22:03$218,000, and the list goes on. And what's interesting about the
- 22:10athletes money being mentioned here is I don't know if it's as
- 22:15interesting to you guys as it is to me, but I'm always like
- 22:19knowing like kind of what goes on beyond these contracts and
- 22:23like the actual insurance and outs really like kind of
- 22:27interests me. So to see it all out on paper,
- 22:31because you can reverse engineer basically how much these
- 22:35athletes are actually getting paid for an appearance fee.
- 22:38Because we know what they aren't in prize money because Grand
- 22:41Slam track was so vocal in 100 gram per first, 50g per second.
- 22:46And we also know that they've been paid half of what they're
- 22:50owed. So the guys that let's run have
- 22:52put together a table basically showing total money of what some
- 22:57of these athletes are owed. So the top one, for example,
- 23:00Sidney McLaughlin and Roney, because she's owed $356,000,
- 23:06she's owed half of their prize money, which is $125,000.
- 23:11She's owed half of their appearance fee.
- 23:13Yes, of the some of the top athletes, the guys who signed
- 23:16early, So McLaughlin, the Roan ABN one, Josh Kerr, I think he
- 23:20was second. As it plays out, they got
- 23:23massive appearance fees just to turn up.
- 23:27They didn't even have to earn any of this prize money.
- 23:30So hers was 50% of that appearance fee, $231,000, which
- 23:37is bloody crazy. Josh Cares 50% of his appearance
- 23:40fee was $143,000. And yeah, it's when you kind of
- 23:47see the sums that start coming from, well, this is just two or
- 23:52three athletes. And then how many did they sign?
- 23:54Like multiple, multiple athletes?
- 23:57You can start to see based on what the Diamond League pay like
- 24:0130 grand for a win or 25 grand for a win or something.
- 24:04They probably pay a small appearance fee, maybe pay for
- 24:08the flights to get there or something.
- 24:09And then MJ and Grand Slam have thought they could just steam
- 24:14roll in and like 10 times that. And who was it out the letter
- 24:20and spoke to? I don't know if you had the
- 24:21interview with Jared and the Goose the other day and they
- 24:23were asking him about like, how was your treatment?
- 24:26Because they were kind of very out there in terms of saying or
- 24:30we're going to treat you like celebrities and like movie stars
- 24:33type thing, like you deserve to be, which is fair enough.
- 24:36Did you get put on 1st class flights and where the hotels
- 24:40these really swanky things? And he was like, yeah, I mean,
- 24:44we flew into, we flew domestically on like a short
- 24:48flight. So being in business first class
- 24:52didn't really make any difference in terms of his
- 24:54comfort because it was a short flight.
- 24:57But it's probably 345 times the cost of a normal economy ticket,
- 25:02and they were putting them all in there.
- 25:06So, I mean, hindsight is is wonderful, isn't it?
- 25:08And you can kind of look at it now and think, how stupid were
- 25:12they? But yeah, what do you think
- 25:15about all that? I get I can see the vision of
- 25:18what he was trying to do but he sort of skipped the first like 3
- 25:24years of this plan. Like he just jumped straight to
- 25:26year 4 and like there was no like working up to that point.
- 25:31He just went all in. And when you're looking at the
- 25:34numbers here, you're like, how did he think this was ever going
- 25:38to work? Even some of the production
- 25:41companies, like I'm not really sure how much like they'd
- 25:44normally get both. What they're getting is
- 25:46absolutely outrageous. Like even even Sidious Mag, like
- 25:50what did they get? They got like nearly 300 grand,
- 25:54272 grand. Umm, yeah.
- 25:58I like, I don't know how they came up with that number for
- 26:03like I'll see this mag would do was like publicize what was
- 26:06happening like all this. So how do they make 272,000?
- 26:10Like how do they come up with that number for it?
- 26:12And I just, I really, really don't get it.
- 26:16Yeah. So Chris Char, Yeah.
- 26:20Hard to say them getting their value for the top 272 grand and
- 26:25same with the was it just over $3,000,000 for a broadcast
- 26:29partnership the broadcast production like $3,000,000 for
- 26:33broadcast rights. How did they get close to making
- 26:36that money back in in views and I I don't know, I don't know how
- 26:41you make money from that, but. Well, that's about 3 million for
- 26:46the broadcast, right? Remember the first one in in
- 26:49Kingston? They literally had the drone
- 26:51flying round the round the track and that was basically the
- 26:54broadcast. He's calling 750K to fly a
- 26:59drone. I mean, that can't be there must
- 27:05be domestic, a domestic view or like a pay-per-view or something
- 27:09that was offered that was not taken up.
- 27:11I don't know because. You remember, like Mitch Dyer
- 27:16and like straight at it, They like live streamed onto their
- 27:19YouTube or something and there was no commentary.
- 27:21So he was having to talk over the visual that he'd been given
- 27:25access to, to like, produce some sort of commentary.
- 27:32But I thought there's some sort of paywall that like we just
- 27:34couldn't say the regular punter. I don't think so, but I mean,
- 27:39yeah, I don't know the the exacts.
- 27:42I'm just we can just talk about the money though and hypothesize
- 27:45over like what agreement was or wasn't in place.
- 27:49But the interesting thing about that Chris Chavez and Citius 1
- 27:52is so the amount that's listed there is facetious mag and Chris
- 27:57Chavez, who's like part owner has said, because he was on the
- 28:01broadcast for I think Miami and Philadelphia.
- 28:05Like he was there on the ground doing like the the pre show and
- 28:09the post show, you know, given like the facts and some analysis
- 28:12and stuff. And he said all of his work
- 28:15relating to that is entirely separate.
- 28:18So this 200 and was paid separately as well.
- 28:21So this 273 K facetious was solely for like promo and social
- 28:29media stuff. And then that's where these
- 28:33Let's Run boys have got a bit carried away because I don't
- 28:36know if the it's like a rivalry or whatever, but obviously they
- 28:41they work in the same space and they compete for the same
- 28:45listeners and or readers. I mean, I always think the more
- 28:49the merrier. Like if someone's a fan of
- 28:50running and they are engaged with Let's Run, they probably
- 28:54engaged with Sisius as well. But the way that this is played
- 28:58out, they've kind of like jumped right on it.
- 29:01And I mean, it's fair enough because apparently there's,
- 29:04there's these rulings and regulations in the US which
- 29:07state that if you have any sort of financial relationship, you
- 29:13have to disclose that the promo or the sponsorship or the
- 29:17marketing that you're putting out there is a paid
- 29:20relationship. And that's where they've really
- 29:23taken an issue with all the stuff that City has done around
- 29:26it. Because now it's come out that
- 29:28they were paid or supposed to be paid 273 grand for it.
- 29:33But had this bankruptcy have not happened, no one would have
- 29:36known that. No one would have known that
- 29:38they actually received any money for it.
- 29:41And I think The thing is them receiving money isn't the issue.
- 29:44It's more so the impact it has on the reader or the listener,
- 29:49the consumer, whatever you want to call it.
- 29:51Because when you're like digesting this material from
- 29:54Citius or whoever it may be, if you know that they've been paid
- 29:59to put that there, you may look at it slightly differently and
- 30:02kind of have a bit of critical thinking about it yourself.
- 30:06Because you know, it's been pushed in frontier.
- 30:08You know, there's a bit of an agenda behind that.
- 30:11Whereas if you know that that's entirely just integral neutral
- 30:16article that's been put out there, you can take you can
- 30:18truly take it at face value. And I think that's where these
- 30:22guys have taken a bit of an issue because they're, they're
- 30:26saying, well, we spent our own money to travel to these meets
- 30:30to produce our own articles and our own write UPS entirely off
- 30:36our own backs. And then Citius is they're just
- 30:39getting paid the fortune to do the same and no one knew about
- 30:43it basically. I.
- 30:46But like, they're a news outlet, so they report on the news.
- 30:50So like, I, I know it's wrong they're getting loads of money,
- 30:54but like, it's sort of their job as well, no?
- 30:59Yes. So that's where the lines
- 31:01blurred. So that's what letter on a
- 31:02saying that they do like impartially reports in a
- 31:08traditional journalistic manner, whereas now they're saying that
- 31:12City has positioned itself as though they are the same,
- 31:16whereas it's essentially just content creating influencer type
- 31:20work. Yeah, yeah, I get you.
- 31:24Are they saying they would have turned it down if they were
- 31:26offered to? Yeah, that's, that's what you
- 31:29you have to think. I mean, Jonathan Gaul supposedly
- 31:32won't take absolutely anything, but I'm sure the Brojos would
- 31:37have been all over it. I'm reading about where you
- 31:41could watch. Like Grand.
- 31:43Slam and I think that we're broadcasting in 189 countries.
- 31:47Australia, I can't see Australia or Ireland at this point, but
- 31:51there was on like Eurosport, NBC slash Peacock in the US, all
- 31:58these different streaming services, Sky Sport, RA RA RA.
- 32:01So they must have had some sort of affiliations for a proper
- 32:04service. Like what we were watching was
- 32:07was trash. If that was 3,000,000, three
- 32:10million. Dollars out there, I know we're
- 32:16we're nothing in terms of city. It's all that to run.
- 32:18But it made me think where, where do we sit in terms of this
- 32:21whole like, well, they're just disagreeing on their stance
- 32:28because we're not influences or now.
- 32:32I mean, just as an and now easy double.
- 32:37We need to be careful what we do and what we say by the looks of
- 32:39things like if we're. A startup, right?
- 32:42And a company comes to us and offers us a lot of money to like
- 32:46to publish this event that they've hyped up.
- 32:49That's going to be unbelievable. Like because it was the first
- 32:52round of it. Like you really didn't like if
- 32:55it didn't collapse, like people wouldn't know that.
- 32:57People wouldn't realize. Like it's only 'cause it failed
- 33:01that we know this. Yeah.
- 33:04Yeah, and I. Don't know.
- 33:06Someone. Covering it and and someone
- 33:09connected to running getting paid you know an amount of money
- 33:12to cover sport like. I I see.
- 33:15It get directionally as a good thing whether or not you want to
- 33:19introduce more transparency and integrity in time as things
- 33:23emerge. That's probably a good thing to
- 33:24encourage that with major industries.
- 33:26So, but I wouldn't be like getting, I wouldn't be getting
- 33:31on my high, high horse about what CDs did.
- 33:34Personally, well, you know, oh, forgotten what I was going to
- 33:42say there the that was all my kind of synopsis and analysis of
- 33:47the situation. But then Robert Johnson, who's
- 33:51kind of like the outspoken 1 Owen is our version of Robert
- 33:55Johnson for anyone who listens to let's run an easy double.
- 33:59So someone said that being said, I'm curious how you want Citius
- 34:04to cover track and field. So this might kind of shed a bit
- 34:07of light properly on it because Robert Johnson has responded and
- 34:10he's obviously clearly given a lot of thought to what he said
- 34:15here. So I'll read it out.
- 34:16So he says very simply, ethically, I just listened to
- 34:20their podcast because that's the other things.
- 34:22Let's run then done their own podcasts, like kind of jumping
- 34:25down the throat and they were quite salty for the 1st 10
- 34:30minutes. Like we, we do we have to
- 34:33disclose everything that like we're paid to say and oh, have
- 34:37you been paid to say that? Well done and all this.
- 34:41But so he says. I just listened to their podcast
- 34:43where they spent much of the opening 30 minutes talking about
- 34:45the bankruptcy and their death. It was embarrassing.
- 34:48They still don't get it. I think I'm going to have to
- 34:51write a column. I've always liked Kyle and Chris
- 34:53as people, but they've made a mistake here and won't apologize
- 34:57it, apologize for it or miss it. What's scary is they seemingly
- 35:01don't understand why so many people are outraged on the
- 35:04podcast there you seem to be that in 2023 they made it clear
- 35:08that they weren't big Jay journalists, which I think means
- 35:11like traditional journalists. They were little Jay.
- 35:14So that just means they aren't doing it.
- 35:16Invest investigative reporting. They're trying to make stars and
- 35:20the sport more popular and a sort of like PR hype men, social
- 35:24media influences as if that's to get out of jail card.
- 35:28So what lines are blurred all the time in the year 2025?
- 35:33All the time I say, I'm not a journalist, sorry.
- 35:36All the time I say sometimes I'm a journalist, sometimes I'm a
- 35:40fan. None of that matters.
- 35:42Even if you are an influencer or a simply a celebrity, there are
- 35:46still ethical guidelines and requirements.
- 35:49If you're getting paid to do something, you must disclose it.
- 35:53End of story. And that's a guess.
- 35:56Kind of like the big issue. No one knew that they were paid
- 35:59to do this. So, you know, like on Instagram
- 36:01posts and now celebrities or influencers, they'll always put
- 36:05like hashtag, add, I guess that's the the statement.
- 36:10Yeah, no caveat and well. The the I guess this where the
- 36:16conspiracy theory comes out of it because Kyle Mehrber, who is
- 36:20a part owner of Sisius Mag was the like chief athlete relations
- 36:26or whatever for Grand Slam. He was like Michael Johnson's
- 36:29little sidekick over there. So at this stage, no one knows
- 36:34if, well, I mean, clearly there's a conflict of interest,
- 36:37but apparently he wasn't involved in the deal between
- 36:40Sidious and Grand Slam. Find that.
- 36:45Hard to believe. Yeah, Bullshit.
- 36:48Yeah, because he was. Promoting it through all forms,
- 36:53wasn't he? So that that sounds like a true
- 36:57conflict of interest. It sounds like they probably got
- 36:59paid overs for what they did and but I think that's separate to
- 37:02the fact that they didn't disclose it, did he?
- 37:05Even come on like coffee cup podcasts and start talking about
- 37:08it. Like like, of course you
- 37:10compete. Yeah.
- 37:12Clown. Yeah, see, I remember.
- 37:16At the time, to be fair, I actually don't when you think
- 37:22about it, I don't know if the figure is actually all that
- 37:25extortionate. So if you think there's four
- 37:27meets throughout the season straightaway divided by 4.
- 37:31So it's what's that, I don't know, 70K or something pair
- 37:36Meath and then if he's got 345 people there or whatever and
- 37:40they're doing a couple of days work and I don't know, you know
- 37:43how these like commercial financial deals, they just kind
- 37:47of like skyrocket really quickly.
- 37:48But when you see the, the one figure on a page like that, it
- 37:52looks very extortionate. It's more so about the, the
- 37:56disclosure elements. But I remember thinking at the
- 37:59time, because now I feel like an idiot because I genuinely, I was
- 38:04thinking to myself, well, did you know that it was paid work
- 38:09that they were putting out there?
- 38:11And I remember seeing Siciest like kind of like going to town
- 38:14on it, hyping it, doing the preview, blah, blah.
- 38:17And I just, well, obviously you don't consume things and think,
- 38:22I wonder if they were paid for that.
- 38:23But I do remember when Kingston was like so painfully shit
- 38:28thinking, why hasn't he like referenced any of the negatives
- 38:33about that meat? But in the lead up to it, he was
- 38:37all over it. And then the fact that he was
- 38:40like a paid height man kind of explains it.
- 38:44But yeah, hopefully he takes something from that and we'll
- 38:48see how it unfolds from here. So you're in, there's a Let's
- 38:54run thread in the show nights that's that's getting into the
- 38:57weeds. Just in case she wants to follow
- 39:00it all. And the coffee club podcasts had
- 39:05a chat on as well on their podcast and them like Morgan
- 39:09McDonald was like. Like.
- 39:12They had such a like a short term focus like the Olympics is
- 39:15in like 3 years. If they just like slowly built
- 39:20it up, built it up, built it up, the Olympics would have been the
- 39:22best marketing for them like ever.
- 39:24And so they'd like such a short term focus, like, whereas if
- 39:28they put it longer term, like it could have worked.
- 39:31Umm, like the money them athletes for getting is freaking
- 39:35crazy. Like Josh Kerr getting over
- 39:38200,000. Like I, I'd love to know what
- 39:41his Brooks deal is to like sort of compare or what these guys
- 39:46are normally on because now we just have just like outrageous
- 39:49figure and we're like, So what are they like normally getting
- 39:52for appearance fees or further contracts?
- 39:54It's it's interesting. Yeah, I think the the contracts
- 39:58always come with those Ndas. Don't they like those?
- 40:02That's why I find it so interesting because you just,
- 40:04you never see any of those details besides prize money that
- 40:08they might earn in a race. And then your theory is that's
- 40:11just a fraction of what they earn really.
- 40:15But it's hard to look at this also negatively because
- 40:18ultimately you do want more money to be going to athletes
- 40:21and. Running to.
- 40:23Becoming a richer sport all round, but this just seems like
- 40:27it was a bit of a shitter from Gecko Bloody Plant.
- 40:32Pots. Bloody plant pots, a lot of
- 40:34them. Mainly MJ did the last last part
- 40:41on it. There was an interview which
- 40:44Jonathan Gaul spoke to MJ ahead of Kingston, I think ahead of
- 40:49the first meet. And he says to him, like, how do
- 40:52you plan on actually making money from this?
- 40:54And like to look at it now with hindsight.
- 40:58He just, he comes out of it so well, Jonathan Gaul, because
- 41:02he's doing that critical thinking from the get go.
- 41:05He didn't know it was going to fail.
- 41:07But you can see all these big numbers floating around and.
- 41:11MJ. Proper bites and he's like, I
- 41:14will not explain to you anymore how I'm going to make money out
- 41:17of this. I'd say Janka Bingo Brixton is
- 41:22laughing as well because he's like, oh, I'll see how the first
- 41:24year will go and then he might join it.
- 41:26That's right. May all the field athletes as
- 41:29well, because they were ostracized, weren't they?
- 41:33Yeah, they were shafted. Now they'd be very smoke dying
- 41:41breed though the. Let's run skies.
- 41:45But then there's plenty going on in that thread.
- 41:51I just made their integrity. They're they they true fans of
- 41:55the sport, True journalistic fans?
- 42:01Doing God's work for free. Apparently they on whatever day
- 42:07it was, I went on the website to like look at this article,
- 42:10they'd actually changed the bio of the website.
- 42:13So where the logo comes up and they've changed it back.
- 42:16Now the logo comes up massive, like let's run.
- 42:19And then underneath now it says it's like they're phrase.
- 42:28I don't know if they change it regularly or what, but now it
- 42:30just says powered by humans, not an algorithm.
- 42:33But when I went on there the other day, I'm annoyed.
- 42:35I didn't screenshot it, but it said something along the lines
- 42:39of we have never been paid to promote, just say Oh no.
- 42:47Well, yeah. Anyway, that's that for this
- 42:50week. I've now learned never say
- 42:52never. Owen, tell us about Team Ireland
- 42:55at World Cross Country. Yeah.
- 42:57So after like probably the most successful European Championship
- 43:01ever and European cross country championship ever, I was
- 43:05expecting Ireland to send like full under 23 teams, full senior
- 43:09teams. But in the end they are sending
- 43:124 individuals. So in the under 20 men, they're
- 43:16sending Noah Harris. In the senior women, they're
- 43:19sending two people. They're sending Fiona Everard
- 43:21and Neve Allen, and then in the senior men, they're sending
- 43:26Brian Faye. So yeah, I was a bit shocked to
- 43:30see that. I know it costs a bit of money
- 43:33to send athletes over to these, like, championships.
- 43:38So I was beheaded. Like, I wasn't sure they're
- 43:41going to send anyone at all. But after the good performance
- 43:43in Europe, they sort of were. I thought they were going to be
- 43:46forced to send everyone. But no, they sent four people.
- 43:50Now it does clash with the Valencia 10K, which a lot of
- 43:56people would use to get a 10K standard for, let's say, the
- 44:01European Championships later on in the year in the Com games.
- 44:04So I just thought it was interesting.
- 44:06I think I read somewhere that Jack O'Leary, he was first Irish
- 44:10home in the men's senior race. He's choosing to go to Valencia,
- 44:16him and Cormac Dalton, but then boys are choosing to run
- 44:19Valencia to try and get a European standard for the 10K,
- 44:22which is 2750. And so, yeah, I don't know where
- 44:27I stand. Like you're sort of turning down
- 44:29an Irish fest for the chance to get another Irish fest.
- 44:33But yeah, what do you guys think?
- 44:36Yeah. It's kind of like, I don't know,
- 44:39it's hard to comprehend, isn't it?
- 44:40But obviously in the athlete choose, you can see like kind of
- 44:44the the road map a bit more clearly.
- 44:46Where is where just looking at immediately, like what impact
- 44:50this has right now, the next major event on the calendar is
- 44:53well, cross country. So we're thinking every egg
- 44:57should be in that basket. But I guess they've just got a,
- 45:00they've got a plan a bit differently in a bit more long
- 45:02term. Is hard to wrap your head round
- 45:06though. Like you say, turning down an
- 45:07Irish fest to try and get an Irish fest.
- 45:12I get it. I was just going to say I think
- 45:16the world cross in recent years maybe lost a little bit of it's
- 45:20it's shine. And because it's so dominated by
- 45:24some of those East African nations or has been, I think for
- 45:30some people running, you know, 50th or and I'm not to say that
- 45:33these guys, that's what they're going to run, but like
- 45:36traditionally the top, like it's so deep.
- 45:38You got six really good Kenyan, 6 really good Ethiopian, 6
- 45:41really good Ugandans sprinkling a few guys from Eritrea and like
- 45:47Hab Tom, what was he 17th at Bathurst like with Kyra
- 45:51Robinson? Was he first Aussie and was 20
- 45:54something like, I don't know, it's a you because you're not
- 45:57competitive versus some of these other races where a European
- 46:00cross or European 10K final. You, you know, you, you're a
- 46:05chance to, to be competitive. Maybe that's playing into the
- 46:09the fact that they they missed one and to the other.
- 46:14I feel like they shouldn't clash like an athlete shouldn't have
- 46:17to choose, shouldn't have to make this decision.
- 46:20Like people should say that OK, there's a cross country
- 46:23champions this year, people are going to want to run the
- 46:25Europeans. They should put on a fast 10K
- 46:27like in the middle of both of these umm to just help them like
- 46:33decide because like no one wants to turn down like an
- 46:36international vest, like most people would jump at it.
- 46:39But I think a European vest is probably a more prestigious
- 46:44vest, let's say then a world cross country one.
- 46:47They might look at a European one as a better as a better
- 46:50chance to meddle or just yeah, I don't know.
- 46:52But it would be such a tricky situation.
- 46:55Tough choice to make. Well, as is it swelled indoors
- 46:59and I think it's in Poland in February maybe as well.
- 47:02So that's the other side of the coin.
- 47:04You've got Valencia 10K on the roads and then Weld indoors in
- 47:08February. So a lot of the the fast people
- 47:11will be going over to bloody Boston, isn't it, where all
- 47:14those ridiculous times around in like January and trying to run
- 47:18indoors times and standards there.
- 47:22Like on the bright side, it looks like the Irish guys were
- 47:25offered. They just turned it down.
- 47:27So Irish athletics, we're going to send them.
- 47:29So kudos to them for giving them the option.
- 47:32But yeah, just having athletes having to make the choice.
- 47:35Well, suppose like so we have to do but like the UK one then
- 47:40Ryan, I'll let you talk about the UK one because I I've got
- 47:44some strong words on that one. Yeah, OK.
- 47:48Team GB have also confirmed themselves for, well, cross
- 47:52country. So the senior women is Phoebe
- 47:55Anderson, Megan Keith, Verity Ockenden and Poppy Tank.
- 48:00So a team of four senior men is a team of four.
- 48:02Also Jacob Kahn, Rory Leonard, David Malarkey and Matthew
- 48:06Ramsden, not to be confused with the Matt Ramsden of Perth.
- 48:11And then the mixed relay team is George Cusi, India Weir, Adam
- 48:15Fogg shout out and Alex Millard. So, yeah, I mean GB send in full
- 48:22teams, although when you compare the teams listed there compared
- 48:27to like the finishing orders at Liverpool cross country and or
- 48:32the teams represented that Europeans last week, they are
- 48:36maybe like 50% of the people in this in these selections have
- 48:42featured in either of those. So it's hard.
- 48:47I mean as we know with the selection process and criteria,
- 48:52it's always blurred. There's always 5 or 6 different
- 48:55bullets and the bottom one saying selectors discretion
- 48:59overrules everything so they can essentially do do as they
- 49:02please. But one person who particularly
- 49:05felt hard done by, so much so that he took to his Instagram
- 49:09story to let his feelings known was Callum Elson, who was
- 49:14actually part of the mixed relay team in Portugal, the Europeans
- 49:17last week where they won a bronze medal.
- 49:20Would you believe? And he's been left out from the
- 49:23world's team here and I won't read the whole thing.
- 49:26But he put on his story that he's gutted to miss out,
- 49:30especially after the medal they achieved last week.
- 49:35He's also careful to say like this isn't a job at any of the
- 49:38athletes selected. Like I've got some great friends
- 49:41in there. I'm as honest as it comes.
- 49:44If British athletics want the fastest track athletes from the
- 49:47summer to represent a world cross country in January, I'm
- 49:50100% not the best pick. But his main point is based on
- 49:55the selection criteria that they publicized, he stands up pretty
- 49:59well against these. So he he's just struggling to
- 50:03understand how he's been left out.
- 50:07The sad thing is he finishes it by saying probably won't make
- 50:10another team after this, but I wear my heart on my sleeve and I
- 50:13feel this is important to raise. So I think fair play to him for
- 50:16putting it out there because a lot of athletes will just take
- 50:19it on the chin, be too scared to say anything and move on to the
- 50:22next one like it's he's after getting.
- 50:25Shafted. It's as if they're after like
- 50:28he's on the B team and they're after bringing up the A-Team to
- 50:30like the world's but like they're not even that much
- 50:33better than him. It actually looks like the two
- 50:36boys are based in America, so they're saving money on flights.
- 50:39That's genuinely what it looks like as well.
- 50:42It's it's a joke. Well, yeah, I think British
- 50:45athletics have got history for some of these cost cutting
- 50:48measures. So particularly George Cutie, I
- 50:53don't really know too much background, but we are when you
- 50:55go on the power of 10, his club is Harrogate slash Virginia
- 50:58Tech. So kind of says it all.
- 51:02He's A5 KPB of from a while ago. So no, he's bit.
- 51:07He ran 7:30 in indoor just a couple of weeks ago.
- 51:12He's and he. Came like 8th in NCAA cross
- 51:15country. So he is super, super.
- 51:16I suppose when you look at that, he's perfect for the thing.
- 51:19But he still, like Callum Elson, he'd done The Dirty work.
- 51:23He'd done the Euro cross. He's done loads across country
- 51:25in England. Like he's ticked all the boxes.
- 51:27He is really, really good. Like, yeah.
- 51:31And he did the trial, right. Iran raced in the British Trolls
- 51:35like the American system where they just like nowadays, with
- 51:39these countries being as batting as deep as what they are like
- 51:44and the excitement that could be marketed and broadcast like it
- 51:49is in America for their selection races, it would be so
- 51:53much better if people just race. You got to follow the drama.
- 51:56You got to see people excited on the day when they made these
- 51:59teams. I don't know versus this
- 52:02discretionary shittery that is the selection policy and the
- 52:06application of it. Yeah.
- 52:10So for the women's team of Phoebe Anderson, Megan Keith,
- 52:15Verity Ochenden and Poppy Tank, definitely Megan Keith and
- 52:19Verity Ochenden, they were part of the European team.
- 52:22So Megan Keith finished 2nd and Verity Ochenden finished 21st.
- 52:29So Poppy Tank and Phoebe Anderson, I think Tank, yeah,
- 52:33Tank was there as well. She finished 22nd.
- 52:39And to be fair, Phoebe Anderson was also there.
- 52:42She finished 16th. So they are the 1st 4 Britt term
- 52:46at European. So you can take no issue, no
- 52:49issues with the women's selection there.
- 52:52When you look at the men, Jacob Kahn finished 29th.
- 52:58Rory Leonard finished 17th. Like Scott B, I'd say he's doing
- 53:03he's going to do Valencia to try and get a 10K standard.
- 53:07Yeah, or if not indoors or Boston.
- 53:10He ran really well indoors last year. 1304 which yeah, rapid.
- 53:15He'll probably try and get under 13.
- 53:18That David Malarkey and Matt Ramsdon, they're the two who
- 53:21didn't feature at European cross country.
- 53:27And then when you look at the results from Liverpool, which
- 53:30was like the qualifier for Europeans, David Malarkey nor
- 53:37Matt Ramsden featured in the top, what have I got here, Top
- 53:4115. So, yeah, I mean, and it's hard
- 53:45to pass complete judgement because besides in Callum Elson
- 53:49situation, because you don't know whether the athletes who
- 53:52perhaps could have been selected ahead of them actually wanted to
- 53:56be selected. But certainly you can kind of
- 53:59take sympathy for Callum Elson there.
- 54:03Yeah, but at least. Well, on the bright side, he can
- 54:05do indoors now. He'll probably go Boston.
- 54:11He'd probably rather a trip to America with an English vest.
- 54:15I know I would. Not the English vest bit, but
- 54:18yeah. Wouldn't you fancy the transfer?
- 54:25No. If there was, you're never going
- 54:29to get an Irish vest. But an English vest opened up a
- 54:33space. Would you take it?
- 54:36Would you sell until I die? Yeah.
- 54:39No, no, I would never do that. How about the end?
- 54:43If you found some New Zealand connection a few generations up
- 54:47the line and there was a sneaky marathon spot opened up
- 54:51somewhere. I've got more chance of a GB
- 54:55vest. My dad's born in Scotland, so.
- 54:59That's true, I know. Well, I guess you wouldn't feel
- 55:05too dirty and honouring that then.
- 55:10I wouldn't wouldn't do it, but it wouldn't make sense.
- 55:16I wouldn't be looking to do anything like that.
- 55:18And let's look, I mean, I have heard and know of instances
- 55:26where in other sports athletes have is it defected from
- 55:32competing for Australia to take up to compete for another
- 55:36country. And it's because of either links
- 55:42to poor funding associated with one country over the other and
- 55:46and fewer opportunities. So which again, I'm not against,
- 55:52I think, yeah. Like if.
- 55:54The country's not doing right by you then I think that's, you
- 55:57know, not what you ever want to see happen.
- 55:59But I can understand it. Sort of like in Charles Hicks
- 56:04situation, like he'd get nothing off the UK but if he actually
- 56:08runs well in America like the funding you get off America
- 56:11would be incredible compared to the UK where they probably
- 56:13wouldn't even bring him on a team.
- 56:15The more anything about the UK section policy they're actually
- 56:18so stupid. Like what?
- 56:19What are they doing like? Idiots.
- 56:23It's not fair. Yeah, the car.
- 56:26Miles worked his ass off. How do they keep getting chosen
- 56:31to host like these major games? I know that's separate from
- 56:36British Athletics, but well, British Athletics obviously
- 56:38plays a big part in the bid process and everything because
- 56:43they've got they've got European outdoors this coming summer.
- 56:47And is it Glasgow's got COM games and then I think World
- 56:53Champs is back in London maybe like 20-30 or something as well.
- 56:57Is it? I think so.
- 57:01No one else. Must want it.
- 57:05See there you can save all the pennies for.
- 57:10America yeah, saving on the flights and just bid, put it
- 57:13towards a bid. Right, it's another bit of news.
- 57:16There's a another fella's been popped for Dopin this week.
- 57:20Emmanuel Kiprop, Kip Russo. So he's a 13O65K guy and a 2730
- 57:26and 10K guy are. We surprised.
- 57:30Was he? Was he actually popped?
- 57:32I looked him up, it read. I don't know.
- 57:34I was trying to make sense of what he was actually banned for.
- 57:38It was the passport thing wasn't it, Where it's over the period
- 57:41of time they check. Yeah, that sort of carry on.
- 57:45No, but not like biological passport, was it?
- 57:49I think it was what's the biological passport?
- 57:53It's where like he's got abnormal levels of like blood
- 57:58cells in his bloody or something, isn't it?
- 58:03I. Don't know the the the articles
- 58:05that I've found on him. We're talking about contractual
- 58:08disputes, the reason why he's suspended so.
- 58:12Oh really? Shit, that's random?
- 58:15Well, what the hell. Where have I pulled?
- 58:22This one from I'm sorry Emmanuel, if we've done your
- 58:26dirty, we'll have to take that out.
- 58:27I'm not sure where did I see that.
- 58:33I think we. Might have to so like the World
- 58:37Athletics article talks about. Yeah, it.
- 58:41Confirms that this Emmanuel Keep Keep Ruto has been suspended for
- 58:44participating in athletes by the athletes representative panel
- 58:49Suspensions arises from Ruto's non compliance with an order
- 58:52issued by the panel following a dispute lodged against him.
- 58:55Under their representative rule, the suspension is effective or.
- 59:02A manual. I'm so sorry.
- 59:05Contractual documentation breakdown of his earnings
- 59:08related to employment with the Japanese club.
- 59:11So I'm not sure. I couldn't find exactly what he
- 59:14got pot for. He hasn't been pot for anything.
- 59:18I think so. Making money in Japan, non
- 59:21disclosure transparency is really the the overarching theme
- 59:24here, I think. Yeah.
- 59:26Well, it was a nice segue from people have seen more.
- 59:28Transparency from the. Previous story about would you
- 59:32sell your soul and run for a different nation?
- 59:34The Kenyans don't like him being based in Japan.
- 59:38Was this the guy that was on Kip Jogi's team?
- 59:42Nah. So that's another fella.
- 59:43Think this guy gotta be careful now.
- 59:46Think this guy's Hilary Kip Church here.
- 59:49Chip Quan Quony. Oh, nice.
- 59:54Oh, that's the passport one. He's.
- 59:56The biological passport, yes, there's a few of the NN fellas.
- 1:00:01Like starting to crop war. What?
- 1:00:04You're trying to say Ryan I? Don't know what I'm trying to
- 1:00:07say. To be fair, I'm trying to say
- 1:00:09sorry to Emmanuel in the first instance.
- 1:00:14But yeah, you don't like to see this other people in Kit Jogia's
- 1:00:17team getting popped. Like your mind just goes one
- 1:00:19place and you don't want it to go there.
- 1:00:22I'll tell you what you also don't like to see.
- 1:00:23You don't like to see the coach, Patrick Sang, claiming like
- 1:00:27oblivious and being quite defensive about it.
- 1:00:30You'd rather them like, be on the front foot, take
- 1:00:33accountability and be like, I can't believe this has happened
- 1:00:36in our camp. Like we're going to introduce
- 1:00:39these measures to make sure it doesn't happen again.
- 1:00:41You know, like rather than being.
- 1:00:47Like saying you. Can't be across everyone at all
- 1:00:49times type thing and trying to deflect the blame.
- 1:00:54But I mean to be fair, if imagine if Kipchoge ever got
- 1:00:58done I think running would just fall apart.
- 1:01:00So it would be a terrible thing for the sport.
- 1:01:04Yeah, well, at. Least he's he's pretty much gone
- 1:01:06now. Like that's sort of same thing.
- 1:01:08But Bolt, he sort of got out pretty, pretty quick as well.
- 1:01:12I'm not saying anything, but he left pretty rapidly.
- 1:01:17Well, there are a few conspiracy theories regarding Mo Farah in
- 1:01:24that sense as well, aren't there?
- 1:01:26Well. It same sort of thing like is
- 1:01:28camp, people in this camp are getting pumped.
- 1:01:33When they make it so big, they get out whilst they're on top,
- 1:01:36yeah. Speaking.
- 1:01:39Of incredible recoveries. Should we segue into training
- 1:01:44weeks? Yes, the has there been?
- 1:01:48Some big weeks from you guys. Big week with a broken arm on
- 1:01:53the bike. Go for it now.
- 1:01:57Just. Quickly Yeah, I'd stupidly done
- 1:01:59300K on the bike this week. It was a it was an early trial
- 1:02:04on Tuesday to see how it went, and it went OK, so we just
- 1:02:08rolled with it, pardon the pun. There's also some stupidity on
- 1:02:12Saturday morning given it was our works Christmas due on
- 1:02:16Friday and I came home after 7 pints, not too healthy and then
- 1:02:22got up for the group ride on Saturday morning and there was
- 1:02:25like I was a little bit late so I missed the start which meant I
- 1:02:29had to spend half an hour trying to get on the back of the group.
- 1:02:32And there was like at least once every minute and there's 30
- 1:02:37minutes I was saying to myself going you can't catch them, just
- 1:02:41go home. And it was absolute torture.
- 1:02:44You know, like when you just don't want it and you're not in
- 1:02:47the right head space and you're trying to find any excuse not to
- 1:02:49do it. I was absolutely battling
- 1:02:52myself, but hung on in there. And from a running point of view
- 1:02:58on Sunday, I got up to 3 by 8 minutes, which is the obviously
- 1:03:02the longest kind of single interval of done yet.
- 1:03:07And it was like so nice because I think it was halfway through
- 1:03:11the 2nd Rep or something, I realized, shit, you haven't been
- 1:03:14thinking like at all about your stride or like putting your heel
- 1:03:19down and offsetting any weight. Like I think that was a bit of a
- 1:03:24turn and point for me because it was the first time where I'd
- 1:03:28almost forgot about the injury. So I'm hoping I'm touching wood
- 1:03:32that that won't change. But yeah, trying to remain level
- 1:03:36headed and just keep sticking to the plan.
- 1:03:39But fingers crossed we are at least part way through the woods
- 1:03:43now. That's good to hear.
- 1:03:46And like 3 by 8 minutes. Like what's that?
- 1:03:4824 minutes of of actual running, which is pretty good.
- 1:03:53Listen as he's saying it with a smack on his face.
- 1:03:56No, I'm serious. I'm serious.
- 1:03:59That's a that is good. Like when's the time you've done
- 1:04:02that? Yeah, OK.
- 1:04:04Six months ago and. So yeah, progress for play and
- 1:04:09turn to can the bike like. That's a big week.
- 1:04:12Like, how many hours is that? Like, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:17Well, 10 hours and 10 minutes if you think.
- 1:04:22Because he's slower. That's a good.
- 1:04:26Segue to my running weight. He's back 10.
- 1:04:39But yeah. In terms of things to report, I
- 1:04:43mean pretty similar to last week other than I'm just running
- 1:04:47longer runs, so more 45 minutes to an hour runs, which is good.
- 1:04:54I think I had a consult, I think, yeah, I had a consult
- 1:04:57with a sports doctor and she's happy with how things are all
- 1:05:00progressing and which was good. No, Did I mention this?
- 1:05:05No, I think I mentioned this last week.
- 1:05:06I can't remember. But anyway, things are all
- 1:05:09tracking really well. Body feels good.
- 1:05:12I was away for part of the week but yeah, still got in my runs
- 1:05:17the best. It's felt comfortably.
- 1:05:21Some of the pain I've been experiencing I think is not, I
- 1:05:25hope is not bone related. I think is what has been
- 1:05:28described as my pelvic floor being a bit overactive, which is
- 1:05:33not unexpected. But other than that, some like
- 1:05:37pretty mild discomfort. Everything feels pretty good.
- 1:05:40Moving better in all my runs, starting to incorporate strides
- 1:05:44and I'll start to do the first part of quality stuff this week
- 1:05:48or next. So yeah, all going well.
- 1:05:52So, so going so well that I ran a little bit quicker today and I
- 1:05:55got kudos from Owen. So it's been a big day.
- 1:06:00It was worthy. It was a good one, fair play.
- 1:06:02What's the court to get kudos whoever comes?
- 1:06:07Up first on the feed. I just like the first one and
- 1:06:12then I'm gone. Well, you mustn't.
- 1:06:15Yeah, it must be one and one a day Max, because I reckon I've
- 1:06:18probably had about 3 kudos in six months.
- 1:06:23So wait, how much did you run this week?
- 1:06:25Is it still? A little bit sorry, still a.
- 1:06:28Bit sorry. It's yes and no.
- 1:06:33So the so the pain that I used to experience when I stopped
- 1:06:37running, I don't feel, I feel pain in a different area like
- 1:06:40tightness, but apparently that's not to be not unexpected and not
- 1:06:46anything to get too carried away with.
- 1:06:48So I'm not getting too concerned about it and just basically just
- 1:06:54running as per normal and in the gym lifting per normal and just
- 1:06:58experiencing all the normal sort of feelings of.
- 1:07:01Load and. Tightness, you know, tight
- 1:07:03calves. Again.
- 1:07:05My adapters are a little bit tight.
- 1:07:07Rah, rah, rah. You know, to get them soreness.
- 1:07:10Yeah. You know the past month you've
- 1:07:13still averaged 65 KA week. Just not bad considering just
- 1:07:18scraping by. Yeah.
- 1:07:20And to begin with, it was just because I had a high frequency,
- 1:07:23like it's like 410 runs a week or something.
- 1:07:25Whereas now it's running a little bit, they're getting a
- 1:07:27little bit meatier, so. Yeah, I.
- 1:07:31Feel I don't feel like I'm pretty itchy to get stuck back
- 1:07:34into stuff but I'll just ask the questions of people and then
- 1:07:40when I get told what I can do or do it.
- 1:07:44At least you've got a methodology to account for all
- 1:07:47your Christmas chocolates. Trying to and yeah, it did it.
- 1:07:53I don't know, 150 odd case on the bike, half of what Ryan did.
- 1:07:57But right, let me move on to my week probably so ratio.
- 1:08:07So Monday, easy double day, 45 minutes on the treadmill in the
- 1:08:10morning and then in the evening I done 45 minutes and a few
- 1:08:15strides. Tuesday I don't 60 minutes in
- 1:08:21the morning, so 13 1/2 kilometers again on the
- 1:08:24treadmill. I just, I, I really like the
- 1:08:28treadmill now because you get up in the morning and it's cold and
- 1:08:30wet and it's shit and you just go into like a nice warm gym.
- 1:08:34So yeah, I I like it and then can't believe it's.
- 1:08:40Taken us over an hour and 10 minutes to mention the weather.
- 1:08:43Oh. Yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaking of treadmills, did you watch Jack's latest?
- 1:08:50Video. Yeah, first time in like 5
- 1:08:52years. How?
- 1:08:53Yeah, how? Suppose it doesn't work.
- 1:08:58Yeah, it doesn't have to. Daylight hours only, yeah.
- 1:09:03Privileged day, I know. He.
- 1:09:05Deserved. He worked for it and right
- 1:09:09Tuesday evening track session so the usual one will cool down and
- 1:09:14then it was 2 sets of 8 by 400 off what was meant to be off 30
- 1:09:21seconds. But umm, because I was doing it
- 1:09:25on my short 336m track where I finish I don't start.
- 1:09:33So I have to like jog halfway up the home straight again and
- 1:09:38start from halfway there. So I couldn't get back in the 30
- 1:09:43seconds or else I'll just be sprinting the whole time.
- 1:09:45So it worked out like 45 seconds and they were all in around 60
- 1:09:51sevens, 60 eights, few 60 sixes in there.
- 1:09:55Finished in like a 63 and it was 4 minutes between between the
- 1:10:01sets. So yeah, feeling good.
- 1:10:04Just your standard 400 me workout really.
- 1:10:08And when is the? With the four minutes in
- 1:10:11between, is the objective then to push them quite hard or
- 1:10:16keeping them controlled so to keep them?
- 1:10:18Controlled like because of the rest is pretty sure in between
- 1:10:24the the sets are like 4 minutes. It actually it flies by as well
- 1:10:30and you think it's longer, but it feels like it flew by and
- 1:10:35because it's like 8 in a set, it's actually a lot.
- 1:10:39It's not like you're doing like 4, you have a break, another 4,
- 1:10:43you have a break. It's not like them short ones.
- 1:10:45Like 8 in a set is like it's pretty long.
- 1:10:47So like, I don't know, like it's 67.
- 1:10:51Like they were just all them were like relatively hard if you
- 1:10:56get me. So yeah.
- 1:10:59And I had the group there. I will add two other guys would
- 1:11:02be there as well. So they were jumping in on every
- 1:11:04second one. So every second one I could just
- 1:11:06sort of follow them, which was which was nice.
- 1:11:10And Wednesday morning I done 60 minutes on the lip decal and
- 1:11:14that's true. After that I done 30 minute jog
- 1:11:17on the treadmill. So again, just 6K in like 440
- 1:11:21sevens. And that evening I do my
- 1:11:24circuits class, which was the last one before Christmas, and
- 1:11:29we were doing this, I don't know, like you do like not much
- 1:11:35weight at all, but. Fuck me.
- 1:11:37Guys, I pulled up so sore from this one.
- 1:11:39We're doing this new exercise with like you do lunge, you
- 1:11:44lunge out to the side and then you pick up a weight and like, I
- 1:11:49never done that exercise before. And the next morning I was,
- 1:11:53yeah, pretty, pretty sore. Where?
- 1:11:58Where's this tightness? From my ass.
- 1:12:02Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it was just like,
- 1:12:06it's sore enough to walk so that even I sort of got right into
- 1:12:08them. And because the next morning I
- 1:12:10had a relatively big session. So again, I was on the treadmill
- 1:12:16because it was super shit outside and it was 2 by 20
- 1:12:22minutes on the treadmill and with five minute jog in between.
- 1:12:27So the first set was at 3 O sixes and the second set was at
- 1:12:313 O fives. But like like with the
- 1:12:33treadmill, I've I've got serious trust issues with the treadmill.
- 1:12:37I don't know, do you ever like feel that the pace isn't right?
- 1:12:42Like these treadmills are really new, but I just feel like it's
- 1:12:46not like I don't think I could run like three O 5 just comfy.
- 1:12:51And like so after the first set, the lactate was 1.9 and after
- 1:12:55the second set the lactate was two point O So like I don't know
- 1:12:59if my lactate is really that low.
- 1:13:02So like while doing those paces, do you get me like that worked
- 1:13:08out like 13 K at 320 fours, which is which is a pretty big.
- 1:13:14So did you. Did you put the treadmill on an
- 1:13:18incline at all or was it it was flat?
- 1:13:21It was like 0.5. But.
- 1:13:26Again, it's is that? Is that a myth?
- 1:13:28Is it like I heard that it just puts more stress on your
- 1:13:33Achilles because your legs are an angling?
- 1:13:36I just. Find that I struggle to get my
- 1:13:39heart rate as as high on the treadmill is if I was doing it
- 1:13:43on the road. Like it feels easier to make
- 1:13:46treadmill running than it does road running for the same pace
- 1:13:50when I set my treadmill. But yeah, because I feel like
- 1:13:54you're only having to get off the ground for the treadmill to
- 1:13:57move underneath you rather than having to push yourself forward.
- 1:14:01Yeah, but like some like Jack, a bigger Britain swears by it.
- 1:14:03Like he does loads of his sessions on it so.
- 1:14:07It must. Be.
- 1:14:08Yeah. I don't think there's anything
- 1:14:09wrong with it, I think it's just it feels like lower load and
- 1:14:13like lower mechanical load and. Just.
- 1:14:16Maybe slightly less like harder on on your body, but I don't
- 1:14:21think that's a bad thing. And having slightly lower
- 1:14:23lactate than higher lactate, like isn't that directionally
- 1:14:26just a good thing? Yeah, like I.
- 1:14:28Guarantee you if I'm on that session outside, my lactate
- 1:14:30would not be like 2.0. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:34So like I think it's helpful well.
- 1:14:37Yeah, the thing if you, if you hadn't have done your lactate,
- 1:14:40you probably wouldn't be second guessing yourself.
- 1:14:42But because you've run 5K and the rest in a 1525 pace with a
- 1:14:48lactate reading of two, that's why you're probably like, is
- 1:14:51this pace really right? We could be on.
- 1:14:54For Valencia Voice and but after that I went outside and I done
- 1:15:00some strides as well. And.
- 1:15:04I sort of over so because this before work, I sort of have to
- 1:15:08like count back the hours so I'm not late for work and I was a
- 1:15:11little bit late for work this day so I got away with it though
- 1:15:15so. None of the strides were
- 1:15:16sacrificed. You were happy to just be late
- 1:15:19for where I. Nearly done it and I was like,
- 1:15:22you know what, It's going to take me another like 2-3 minutes
- 1:15:25to these strides. Like really, it doesn't make a
- 1:15:27difference. So if I'm late, I'm going to be
- 1:15:28late. I may as well be late by a bit.
- 1:15:30So yeah, how? Much cool down.
- 1:15:34All the 15 minutes full cool down is all 15 minutes that's.
- 1:15:38Where you should be taking the 5 minutes off no.
- 1:15:42No way. No way.
- 1:15:45They're all junk miles as cool down miles anyway, aren't they?
- 1:15:48No, they all mean something conditioning.
- 1:15:53That evening I, I, my legs felt like dirt.
- 1:15:57So I don't 30 minutes on treadmill just to shout them out
- 1:16:00before a sort of gym session, which was a little bit heavier
- 1:16:03of a lift. So that was my Thursday, Friday
- 1:16:10rest day. Got a massage, sort of
- 1:16:12rejuvenated me for the Saturday morning.
- 1:16:15I had 10 by 400 meter hills. I'm with these hills I.
- 1:16:25You sort of. Need a nice hill and like after
- 1:16:28doing them, I was like, should I've got a hill with like a
- 1:16:31bigger incline like you're always doubting yourself and
- 1:16:35well, this one like eh, Oh yeah, like I felt shit from from hill
- 1:16:40one, but like I was doing them in like 6860 nines.
- 1:16:44So I don't know if the hill was hard enough if you get me for a
- 1:16:48hill session, but umm, look the all up, warm up, cool down the
- 1:16:53hills. I done EH17K.
- 1:16:56So umm, another sort of big enough session and I feel like,
- 1:17:00yeah, it's just like halfway up the hill.
- 1:17:01You just get shot with that and you're just like struggling the
- 1:17:05whole way up. Umm.
- 1:17:07But that evening I drove down to Limerick, a place called
- 1:17:13Abbeyfield, and I went to my first engagement party.
- 1:17:19So you know you're getting old when you're going to them.
- 1:17:25And it's pretty lucky Dave, these data Greenway.
- 1:17:28So these greenways pop up around Ireland and them it's just just
- 1:17:31like this lovely long strip of tarmac in along like old railway
- 1:17:37lines or just in the middle of the country.
- 1:17:39So I had one of them to run on. So I don't 60 minutes at 420
- 1:17:43fives, so 13.6 K shaking out the legs after the long drive it was
- 1:17:47like 3-3 hours 15 minutes down from where I live.
- 1:17:51So big. Drive it was.
- 1:18:02So yeah, that's the relation. Of the the engaged couple to you
- 1:18:06in AD we actually. Met them in Perth in Australia.
- 1:18:10Oh yeah. So.
- 1:18:11Yeah, I got good friends them and they came home for Christmas
- 1:18:14and they're having their engagement party and then their
- 1:18:16wedding is in like 2 years back home.
- 1:18:18So yeah, so it's good to see them.
- 1:18:21First time seeing them and since like seven months. 0 alcohol,
- 1:18:26the policy few. 0 alcohol. And I managed to get to bed at
- 1:18:30half 10 because guys, this the party, yeah, this probably life
- 1:18:37doesn't wait for nobody. So I still had AI, still had a
- 1:18:4095 minute run to do the next day and.
- 1:18:42That takes. Priority.
- 1:18:45The more the more I say this out loud the more I realize like how
- 1:18:48selfish I am. Like it's actually it's actually
- 1:18:51terrible. Like I feel so sorry for pumping
- 1:18:54air fist. Right now, like yes, finally got
- 1:18:56through Zoom. I'm not going to.
- 1:18:58Stop. But I just realized how selfish
- 1:19:00I am. It's terrible, but yeah.
- 1:19:05So next morning I done 95 minutes along that Greenway and
- 1:19:10what was it? There was a 20 minute pick up
- 1:19:13after 60 minutes. So after 60 minutes I pick up
- 1:19:16trying to get the hurry up. And the way this Greenway
- 1:19:20worked, it was like a slow incline, the hallway.
- 1:19:23And then when I turned around, I had a nice little, nice little
- 1:19:27downhill for the for the pick up.
- 1:19:30So yeah, it worked out at 24.5 KM, 354 kilometer pace, an hour
- 1:19:37and 35 minutes. And for this one, I am, I made
- 1:19:43my, my activity public for like so everyone can see it.
- 1:19:48So I'm, yeah, I got a few records so strong.
- 1:19:51I'm such a Dick head. So yeah, I got a few strata
- 1:19:57records, which topped off a good week.
- 1:20:00I'd done 138K. Yeah, and I'm racing now this
- 1:20:06Saturday, a little 5K. Saturday the 27th 20.
- 1:20:12Seventh, yeah, 27th all them chow on menu, menu shoes that
- 1:20:17Santa's after getting me and I'll them, yeah, give it a lash,
- 1:20:21see what I can. I don't know if there's going to
- 1:20:23be anyone there, but it's just like a big head out before
- 1:20:27Valencia if I stay fit and healthy.
- 1:20:31You. Gyming on Christmas Day again
- 1:20:34this year. I looked at my program and I
- 1:20:37actually have Christmas Day off. But I might.
- 1:20:40Do 30 minutes. I'll be having a word.
- 1:20:41With the coach, as you know of a high performance mindset like
- 1:20:45yourself, that's. When you make all the gains and
- 1:20:47everyone else isn't running, no. I might just do 30 minutes.
- 1:20:51I get that like Christmas Day is very boring as well.
- 1:20:53Like fair enough, you get up, but then like you do nothing at
- 1:20:58the end of the day so I might shake out the lights for three
- 1:21:00minutes. Won't hurt.
- 1:21:03Yeah, I'm, I'm a bit disappointed that this is a tape
- 1:21:06a week for you because I would like to see that Christmas Day
- 1:21:09double, but we're not going to get it, are we?
- 1:21:11I don't know if. I'm going to taper that much
- 1:21:13like I might ease up towards the end of the week because like
- 1:21:18I'll be tapering like pretty soon after it.
- 1:21:21So I can't really go down twice or else I might be feeling a bit
- 1:21:26too fresh for Valencia. So look, I'll just trust, just
- 1:21:30do what the coach says. And hopefully, even though that
- 1:21:33Valencia is looking pretty stark, there's so many people
- 1:21:36going, you know, man, have you starstruck?
- 1:21:38Alan Green's got is going as well now.
- 1:21:40Yeah, yeah, everyone's. There you'll be able to.
- 1:21:44Teach him on how to take name. Yeah.
- 1:21:47It's just sad. I'll be in the second wave
- 1:21:49again, Sake Really. Well, yeah, because I think you
- 1:21:53need a I'm in the trying to break 31 minutes.
- 1:21:59Even my PBS 3040 or I'm between 31 and 30.
- 1:22:04So I had to run like faster 5K to try and get in the sub thirty
- 1:22:08group. What was the 5K cut off?
- 1:22:11I'm not too sure actually. I emailed them trying.
- 1:22:16I tried everything they is it like?
- 1:22:20Like so for that Japanese race, it was a completely different
- 1:22:24no. Right.
- 1:22:25I think this is all right. I think it's just.
- 1:22:28Waves. So you're just different corral
- 1:22:31that's all at the same. Time we're just like a step
- 1:22:33back. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:37So that's much. Better than Maragami, where you
- 1:22:40basically had no chance to run with people you would like to
- 1:22:42run with, yeah. And I'm sure like, there's going
- 1:22:45to be so many people, so it probably won't work out better.
- 1:22:49That won't be like redlining from the off.
- 1:22:51I might judge it better. But yeah, super exciting.
- 1:22:55Will you do so, You know, like what RAF will have us do?
- 1:23:01Like a bit of an. Indicator type workout as a bit
- 1:23:04of a race predictor or you're you're thinking that the race
- 1:23:07you'll do is a bit of a blowout will probably give you a bit of
- 1:23:09insight itself, yeah. I'm just going to do that.
- 1:23:12Well, I'll probably do another big session like after that
- 1:23:15race, but the 5K, I'm presuming I'm going to be solo.
- 1:23:20If not solo, that's even better. But if I'm solo, like I'll just
- 1:23:23literally just rinse myself and see what I can, what I can do.
- 1:23:27Like, it's a relatively flat course, so that won't be an
- 1:23:30excuse to use. Yeah, we'll just, I'll just see
- 1:23:33what I have in me. Really.
- 1:23:35Go. And bodies all in one, one pace.
- 1:23:38But he's feeling, yeah. Touch wood.
- 1:23:39Touch wood. I'm telling you guys that people
- 1:23:43should like. I feel like people have such at
- 1:23:44the wrong concern, like idea about physio and massage, like
- 1:23:49people just go to them when they get injured where it should be
- 1:23:53used as like a more preventative method, like measure if you get
- 1:23:56me. Umm, yeah, I just think like I
- 1:24:01know it's expensive, but umm, it's sort of long term, like
- 1:24:04even like every month. Umm, it's it's so, so worth it.
- 1:24:09It just keeps you in line. Yeah, because you've had a
- 1:24:12pretty decent run the past six months or so, haven't you?
- 1:24:15Touch wood, obviously. You're after fun that out there.
- 1:24:24You, you were losing to it. He's.
- 1:24:26Breaking his arm and now he's like you.
- 1:24:29Know he's trying to throw it on me, my body.
- 1:24:32I normally, I normally get a good 6-7 months and then I break
- 1:24:36down. So we're in that, we're in that
- 1:24:38period flexor funding out there. Well, you guys.
- 1:24:41Six weeks to live it up. No, like this is month 6, so
- 1:24:46yeah, we're sort of in the danger period.
- 1:24:48So I just need to keep me under wraps for another little while.
- 1:24:53And like 100% the massage constantly is helping.
- 1:24:56So yeah, just like the whole thing is trying to become a more
- 1:25:00robust like runner that you don't get these little injuries
- 1:25:04that just set you back. You just need that.
- 1:25:06Like I tell you, if you get 2 years good consistent training,
- 1:25:09you'd be a different athlete altogether.
- 1:25:10So that's why I'm sort of trying to do well it seems.
- 1:25:16That you've been having like down weeks and stuff here in
- 1:25:18there which is obviously helping as well because it just takes
- 1:25:21the load out of it a bit, don't it?
- 1:25:23Yeah, and the. Fact that like like the training
- 1:25:26is so specific to me, like like my coach coach is like I'd say
- 1:25:33like four or five people. So like it's so, so specific.
- 1:25:36I think that really helps like after most sessions, he texts me
- 1:25:39to see how again on or he rings me like every now and then see
- 1:25:42how my body is. So it's just that so
- 1:25:44personalized that I think it really.
- 1:25:47It like I'm pretty. Lucky in that way.
- 1:25:51And that Wednesday class with the old ladies must be helpful
- 1:25:53as well. That is the.
- 1:25:55Secret. That is the secret.
- 1:25:58Good. They're not old.
- 1:26:00They listen to this. They're not old.
- 1:26:04Young ladies, I think you call them.
- 1:26:09Old ladies didn't. Good luck.
- 1:26:16Oh. Fair.
- 1:26:16I'm pretty sure that's. It's I can't believe it's
- 1:26:24Christmas episode. Like next time we speak it will
- 1:26:26have been Christmas. It's strange.
- 1:26:30Anyway, you shoot Diaries, we didn't do it last week.
- 1:26:34This week comes from Claudia Hollingsworth, who is the young
- 1:26:41Australian sensation in the 800 metres and I think she's
- 1:26:45potentially looking at moving up towards the 1500 metres in the
- 1:26:48coming years. So it's a video put together up
- 1:26:52in Falls Creek. I think it's a issue debut or at
- 1:26:55least in terms like this long form documentary style stuff.
- 1:27:01So it focuses entirely on her. But you see that she is part of
- 1:27:04a training group up there and her coach is formerly the coach
- 1:27:08of front runner Ben Green, who's recently passed 6 to 12 months,
- 1:27:13moved over to coaching it on Oceana underneath Craig Mottram.
- 1:27:19So he features quite prominently in it as well.
- 1:27:21He doesn't have much of A speaking role, but he's on the
- 1:27:23bike alongside Claudia as they're going up and down the
- 1:27:27gravel paths. They're doing the K reps and the
- 1:27:29800 meter reps and it's kind of well timed because Ben, since
- 1:27:35his move to on, has moved to think, spends most of his time
- 1:27:39in Melbourne. Does he, Dean?
- 1:27:43Yeah, he does, yeah. And then he's he's back in town
- 1:27:46tomorrow for a Christmas Perth special and he's coming down to
- 1:27:49the track. I think they're bringing Jesse
- 1:27:52Hunt as well who's on athlete, so should be good to catch up on
- 1:27:58a Perth boy. Yeah, both Claudia.
- 1:28:01So she in terms of her athletic achievements today, she's round
- 1:28:05157 over the 800 meters. She's the Australian under 20
- 1:28:11record holder in both the 1500 meters and the 1000 meters,
- 1:28:15running four O 2 in the 15 and she's also the nationals
- 1:28:22champion from 2024 in the 800 meters.
- 1:28:26So just a bit of an interesting one to follow.
- 1:28:28She's quite she does like you know, an Aziz one where she does
- 1:28:32the sit down section and kind of a bit of Q&A and stuff.
- 1:28:34So she's she's put that sort of reflective little period mixed
- 1:28:39into the video as well. So it's just another person to
- 1:28:43kind of get to know on a bit of a personal level and follow
- 1:28:46their journey a little bit closer because she is kind of
- 1:28:49looked at with a lot of potential and hopeful that she
- 1:28:52can kind of go far on the international stage.
- 1:28:54So be cool to follow that journey from the starting point.
- 1:28:58Well, I mean, she's been doing it for the years, but in terms
- 1:29:01of opening herself up to to us loss.
- 1:29:06Where is the Australia Track and Field Nationals on this year?
- 1:29:11Since in Sydney is it? When is in Sydney?
- 1:29:17April time? Oh, April.
- 1:29:19OK, OK, OK. So we've got that Perth track
- 1:29:23classic again here, which will be interesting to see if they
- 1:29:26hopefully they pull a decent field together after Nationals
- 1:29:29last year. Because I mean, trying to take
- 1:29:32the Rose tinted spectacles off. But everyone seemed to quite
- 1:29:36like it and everyone thought that they ran quite fast on the
- 1:29:39track and stuff. So hopefully there's some good,
- 1:29:42good people coming over again for that.
- 1:29:46I pray it's a nice spot as well so hopefully you might see them
- 1:29:51running around herdsmen. Yeah.
- 1:29:56Oh, we did last time actually, didn't we?
- 1:29:58Was this, were we all on a long run that Sunday?
- 1:30:01And we run past a few of them. I was I.
- 1:30:05Think I was injured? Must have been the time of year,
- 1:30:11can't remember. Yeah, it's.
- 1:30:13Six months period, Yeah, yeah, I found, looked up the standard
- 1:30:18for go on. There you go.
- 1:30:22I looked up. The standard to get into that.
- 1:30:24So it's like the sub elite in Valencia 10K you have to either
- 1:30:27run 30 flat or 1415 in the last two years.
- 1:30:33So she says switch your time. You will start in the under 31
- 1:30:37min wave, which is like it is the wave I'm meant to be in must
- 1:30:42be real. So and we're plenty of athletes
- 1:30:44with the same goal. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:30:50There was a second YouTube I wanted to just mention, I won't
- 1:30:53explain it in full depth but I don't know if you've seen it
- 1:30:56because I was keen to get your thoughts.
- 1:30:57Seth done a video for Zata pack. Have either either of you
- 1:31:01watched it? Yeah, right.
- 1:31:05How? Like it's not put together with
- 1:31:08anywhere near the same like level of professionalism as like
- 1:31:11these like Clayton Young type the stuff that Izzy's doing now,
- 1:31:15but the the insight from when he has his pre race meeting with
- 1:31:20his coach and they're like a Seth goes.
- 1:31:23I see there's four scenarios that could playoffs.
- 1:31:26It's so good. It's so, so good.
- 1:31:29So he basically says D and he's like, there's there's four ways
- 1:31:32this race can go. Number one is I'm just fitter
- 1:31:36than everyone. Well, firstly they decide his
- 1:31:39plan of attack and he's like, I just want to basically time
- 1:31:43trial it, see what happens. I know I'm fit, I just want to
- 1:31:47see how fit I am. And then they agree upon his
- 1:31:50approach. And then Seth's like, right, OK,
- 1:31:52so based on that, there's four potential scenarios from me
- 1:31:57running hard from the gun and he goes through them all and it's
- 1:32:01like he gaps them all straight away and there's a chase pack
- 1:32:04and they they claw him back a little or someone goes with him
- 1:32:09and then they try and out kick him or no one goes with him and
- 1:32:12he runs away. And he talks through them all
- 1:32:14and he's like, but the way I see it, if anyone's going to beat
- 1:32:18me, they're going to have to be in 27 minute flat shape.
- 1:32:21And I don't think they are because you watch.
- 1:32:26Yeah, go on. You go like he's.
- 1:32:29You just like I'm gonna win, beat, win by a mile like that's
- 1:32:31one of the options he gives and like it's literally what
- 1:32:34happens. You watch the.
- 1:32:38Race did they talk about? The wind or anything?
- 1:32:41Is it? Tough conditions or whatever
- 1:32:43that night, did they consider that people are reading too?
- 1:32:46Much into them conditions like I think it was worse than solo.
- 1:32:52Yeah, just punching. Into the wind for 20. 5 laps, I
- 1:32:57don't know. I don't know if it was.
- 1:32:58I was just wondering if he mentioned it.
- 1:33:03It's just mad that like he's got because you watch the race and
- 1:33:06you see him go off the front. You think, but the AL Sef's a
- 1:33:08Mad Dog is knee. But when you kind of hear his
- 1:33:11pre plan of like why he's so confident and why he's chosen to
- 1:33:15do that is he's literally as leveled up so much to just take
- 1:33:20Stu Mcsway in and Jack Rayner on like that and be so bold.
- 1:33:24Did you see the session you've done before?
- 1:33:26It was outrageous. The 6K3K1K wasn't or something
- 1:33:31like that. Yeah, so it must must.
- 1:33:34Be fun when you it. Is last you done that 6K like 3
- 1:33:40or 4 minutes off, 2K3 or 4 minutes off and then 1K and he
- 1:33:43ran his last 1K and was a 230. Yeah, but.
- 1:33:48Also while wearing spikes for every all of it.
- 1:33:52Yeah. Outrageous.
- 1:33:55Yeah. Fair play, Seth, keep doing it.
- 1:33:58Did you hear us? Who Jimmy Whelan signed with?
- 1:34:00No. No.
- 1:34:03Has he? Announced no, but.
- 1:34:05Apparently he, well, he didn't run Zada peg I think because he
- 1:34:07got a calf twin or something like that.
- 1:34:10Oh, it's just, you just reminded me.
- 1:34:12Sorry. That YouTube Diaries
- 1:34:13recommendation was sent through by one of the listeners, Dan
- 1:34:16Yaxley. So thanks for putting it on the
- 1:34:18radar down. Yeah, I had in my head that
- 1:34:22Jimmy Whelan was, if not signed, about to sign for ASICS.
- 1:34:26And I don't know whether that's just like some strange
- 1:34:29connotation I've drawn up in my own mind, but.
- 1:34:33I thought that as well, to be honest, because he's wearing, he
- 1:34:35always wears the masks, shoes. He's like.
- 1:34:39This Instagram post is in Adidas shoes.
- 1:34:42Yeah, he's. Trying to any war Solomon ones
- 1:34:44as well. And I don't know, because I was
- 1:34:49listening. He'd done does this marathon
- 1:34:51podcast and he was this is before his out of pack and they
- 1:34:57were on about how he's like so robust and never gets injured.
- 1:35:02And then the porch. He was like, oh, saying this now
- 1:35:04I'll probably get injured and he actually did.
- 1:35:08So I'm probably on that same thing now.
- 1:35:11Thanks, Ryan. Yeah, Chris sent that through
- 1:35:16that. That's Jimmy Whelan because we
- 1:35:19were speaking about him the other week, like why he wasn't
- 1:35:21as aspect or whatever. And then Chris sent through, we
- 1:35:23had a bit of a niggle and I was like, oh, it must be the the
- 1:35:27cynic in me. But like, it's not to say I'm
- 1:35:31glad, but it's comforting to see that people transitioning from
- 1:35:37cycling and just hitting the ground running, pardon the pun,
- 1:35:39and like thinking that running is like incredibly easy and
- 1:35:44they're just going to become like one of the best in the
- 1:35:46world instantly. It's just it's not always
- 1:35:49sunshine and roses and unfortunately reality gets us
- 1:35:54all at some point or other, like I think.
- 1:35:56He was running 200K weeks, which is, again, like, all of us could
- 1:36:01run 200K weeks for four weeks. But then it catches up on you.
- 1:36:07Like, it's crazy. Like, yeah, even like Jake,
- 1:36:10like, that comes to a stage where, like, mileage is a
- 1:36:13detriment to a person. Like you just need to find that
- 1:36:15nice balance and I don't know why 200K is a magic number all
- 1:36:20of a sudden. Yeah, I mean, he's, he's just
- 1:36:24come over and he's he's had a good first experience and he's
- 1:36:27gone. Well, let's just see what I can
- 1:36:29do. Keep pushing the limit, keep
- 1:36:31pushing the limit. And now no doubt it'll be a bit
- 1:36:33of a like reminder that there are limits to things and you
- 1:36:39have to be a little bit sensible.
- 1:36:41So I'm sure he'll come out the other side of it.
- 1:36:44Suppose he's. Sort of found ISM as well now he
- 1:36:46would never know if he didn't try.
- 1:36:49Exactly, I see anyone any any Christmas double troubles.
- 1:36:57I feel like the chocolates in like selection box and the
- 1:37:00advent calendar should be bigger.
- 1:37:03I've got you get I've got this just Cadbury's.
- 1:37:06Like I'm actually it's a Malteser 1 and I feel like the
- 1:37:09chocolate should just be like they're tiny.
- 1:37:12They just need to be a little bit bigger.
- 1:37:16But yeah, other than that, like it's not enough to have with a
- 1:37:18cup of tea, you just need a little bit more.
- 1:37:21I have a chocolate related one as well, but he was saying to me
- 1:37:24like last week, oh, we've got no Christmas chocolate in the
- 1:37:27flash. So when and I'm one of those
- 1:37:30where like once you start spending money, it just like
- 1:37:32compounds and you don't just buy one thing, you buy like four or
- 1:37:35five. So then I come home with like
- 1:37:38Maltese is the limp balls Toblerone.
- 1:37:44Did you ever? Throw the rough shake the
- 1:37:45pistachio and lint balls. No, they taste like.
- 1:37:51Kinder. It's the best thing you'll ever
- 1:37:53taste in your life. Get them, they're so good.
- 1:37:58Lint is a proper Christmas chocolate, isn't it?
- 1:38:01Yeah, but anyway, might the she was going on like, oh, we've got
- 1:38:07no chocolate. So I brought her all home and
- 1:38:08then she's going mad saying why have you brought all this?
- 1:38:11And then I was like, well, it's fine, we'll just keep it in the
- 1:38:13fridge until we get to Christmas.
- 1:38:15So then she opens it on like night one, and then obviously I
- 1:38:19proceed to obliterate it over the course of the next three or
- 1:38:22four nights and it's like the 18th of December and yet again,
- 1:38:26we have no Christmas chocolate. But yeah, I think that's us.
- 1:38:33Merry Christmas, fellas. Feliz Navidad.
- 1:38:38Merry Christmas. Did you?
- 1:38:40Did you see the real saying? Feliz Navidad sounds like a
- 1:38:43Scouser saying police. Not me, Dad.
- 1:38:49And we will leave it there, see. You next week.
- 1:38:52Good luck guys. Enjoy.
- 1:38:54See you guys.
