- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. Good afternoon, I'm
- 0:06Speaker 1: Mahalia Artis. Canadian rock singer Sass Jordan has died. She
- 0:10Speaker 1: had a long history with Newfoundland and Labrador, including a
- 0:12Speaker 1: memorable appearance at Kitty Vitty Park in St. John's in
- 0:16Speaker 1: 1989 when she opened for Rod Stewart at what remains
- 0:19Speaker 1: one of the largest concerts ever held in the province.
- 0:22Speaker 1: She returned to St. John's several times since then, including
- 0:25Speaker 1: in 1993 for a sold-out show at the TSC. In 2017,
- 0:30Speaker 1: for a performance at Club One, and most recently, for
- 0:33Speaker 1: performances as part of the Iceberg Alley Performance Tent in 2022.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Known for hits including High Road Easy, Make You a Believer,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and Tell Somebody, Jordan was one of Canada's most recognizable
- 0:44Speaker 1: rock voices and a Juno Award winner. Sass Jordan was 63.
- 0:49Speaker 1: There's a scammer in our midst, trying to latch on
- 0:51Speaker 1: to people who have been caught speeding and intercept ticket payments.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The government of Newfoundland and Labrador says it appears that
- 0:58Speaker 1: the fraudster is attempting to collect speed camera ticket payments
- 1:01Speaker 1: by impersonating the MyGovNL website. Government has some advice on
- 1:05Speaker 1: how to verify if it is actually their website or not.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Payments should only be made through fines administration. Anyone going
- 1:12Speaker 1: that route should verify that you're on an official GovNL
- 1:14Speaker 1: website before entering personal or financial information and confirm your
- 1:18Speaker 1: personal information and vehicle details before making a payment. People
- 1:22Speaker 1: should be cautious of QR codes and links that do
- 1:25Speaker 1: not lead to official GovNL websites. If you believe you've
- 1:28Speaker 1: made a payment through a fraudulent site, contact your bank
- 1:31Speaker 1: immediately and report it to police. Stephenville has gotten its
- 1:34Speaker 1: wings back after a several-year debacle that saw wishes from
- 1:37Speaker 1: an entrepreneur for a booming aeronautics industry fizzle to the
- 1:41Speaker 1: point where the airport was downscaled to an aerodrome. A
- 1:44Speaker 1: new company has begun putting things back in order at
- 1:46Speaker 1: the airport, which used to have an international designation. BTG
- 1:50Speaker 1: Capital of Calgary has applied to the federal authorities to
- 1:53Speaker 1: recertify the facility as an airport. In its darkest days,
- 1:57Speaker 1: the power had been cut, leaving the landmass as a
- 1:59Speaker 1: dark spot, but the power is now back on and
- 2:02Speaker 1: other improvements are being made. On Friday, BTG Premier Tony
- 2:06Speaker 1: Wakeham and Stephenville Mayor Bob Burns stood in front of
- 2:09Speaker 1: about 500 people from the region who turned out for
- 2:12Speaker 1: the grand opening. Mayor Burns is confident that they will
- 2:15Speaker 1: see the resumption of commercial flights to Stephenville, but they
- 2:17Speaker 1: need time. However, he says they have the right people
- 2:20Speaker 1: behind the operation this time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I've indicated to them, look, I'm there 100% behind you guys.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Anything you need me to do, you know, as I've said,
- 2:28Speaker 2: this is my 13th year just on council, and I've
- 2:34Speaker 2: had a lot of history with the airport, running the
- 2:36Speaker 2: air shows in the past and so on, and a
- 2:38Speaker 2: lot of connections and contacts that we can deal with
- 2:42Speaker 2: when it comes to getting this back up and running.
- 2:45Speaker 2: The day we get the passenger service back here, the
- 2:47Speaker 2: people of this area will breathe a big sigh of relief,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and I'm sure there will be a celebration for that
- 2:51Speaker 2: as well.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says she was caught by
- 2:56Speaker 1: surprise by France's proposal to introduce an exploratory snow crab
- 3:00Speaker 1: fishery off Newfoundland in Labrador. The provincial government has called
- 3:03Speaker 1: the move offside. Thompson says Global Affairs Canada is currently
- 3:07Speaker 1: working on the file and she believes the issue will
- 3:10Speaker 1: be resolved sooner rather than later. I mean, I found
- 3:12Speaker 1: out like everyone else, but, you know, I think we
- 3:14Speaker 1: can find a resolution.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And again, you know, it's really important that I stand
- 3:18Speaker 2: with harvesters and I stand with the statement.
- 3:22Speaker 1: She says France has not issued any new snow crab
- 3:24Speaker 1: licenses off Newfoundland. The provincial government is spending $ 1. 2 million
- 3:29Speaker 1: to try to get young people into the fishery. The project,
- 3:32Speaker 1: spearheaded by the FFAW, Professional Fish Harvesters Certification Board, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: the NL Fish Harvesting Safety Association, aims to create what
- 3:40Speaker 1: it calls the NL New Harvesters Network. The FFAW suggests
- 3:44Speaker 1: a third of those in the fishery are nearing retirement age.
- 3:47Speaker 1: FFAW President Dwan Street says she's hoping to add more
- 3:51Speaker 1: to the school curriculum and attend career fairs in the
- 3:53Speaker 1: months to come. That's your news. I'm Mahalia Artis.
